Ryan Natoli is helping to usher in a new era
His 276 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns were key reasons Waldwick/Midland Park was able to start the tenure of new football coach Dan DiStasi with a memorable win
The senior running back/defensive back found the end zone from 22 and 62 yards away in an upset of three-time NJIC champion Rutherford last Friday
As a result, he and Midland Park High School classmate Alexa Hermanns are the first North Jersey Athletes of the Week to be sketched by Bob Rebach, following a 70-year run by now-retired Charlie McGill
“Hearing that both of us got [Athlete of the Week] was pretty cool,” Natoli said
They are the first Midland Park athletes to earn the honor in the same week since The Record began naming Male and Female AOWs in the 2001-02 school year – making their school the eighth to earn that distinction
Natoli began playing football for his hometown just before the Waldwick and Midland Park junior programs merged
“I’ve been playing with the Waldwick kids since fifth grade
it’s not like just meeting new guys as soon as you get to high school.”
That makes the Warriors not only a strong co-op
but after 14-year veteran Greg Gruzdis stepped down
they are off to a strong start under DiStasi
our new coach has wanted to carry on this winning mentality,” Natoli said
“And we knew what we had to do… we just went in with this mindset of
The Warriors put that on display in their season opener by building an early 18-0 lead
They played ball control to the tune of 45 rushes for 325 yards
while holding Rutherford to 79 yards rushing
establishing rapport with teammates helps establish a ground game
and it helps all of you together,” Natoli said
“It [gives you] the energy to rally together and beat a team like that.”
Natoli also plays basketball and baseball at Midland Park
lettered in three sports at Pascack Hills (Class of 1995)
and dad Chris played football at Lacey in Ocean Township
she kind of dragged him up here,” Ryan joked
Natoli has yet to make any big decisions about his future
He’d also like to keep his focus in the present
Going 1-0 against an elite opponent like Rutherford is big
but future opponents should be just as amped up to face the Warriors
“We can kind of keep it in our minds that we won,” Natoli said
Accomplishment: In the Warriors’ 32-20 upset of reigning conference champion Rutherford
Natoli amassed 276 all-purpose yards: 16 rushes for 205 (and two touchdowns) and 3 receptions for 46
and Luke Senatore of Fort Lee for football; and Ori Oelsner of Tenafly and Alejandro Parapi of Mahwah for soccer
Doubling upSince The Record Athlete of the Week feature began in 1954
there have been 10 instances of co-AOWs being selected from the same school
only eight times has a school been home to both the Male and Female AOW in the same week

the Midland Park left fielder wasn’t thrilled by the way he played a ball in the top of the fourth inning
A quick step forward turned into a two-run double for Cresskill’s Robert Welch
didn’t have to wait very long to put that play behind him
Vivino stepped into the batter’s box with the bases loaded and his team trailing by one run
Chase Shortway just clipped an RBI single to bring the Panthers’ deficit to one
hopeful of his base knock being the rally starter
Vivino - who stepped to the plate with zero career varsity hits
turned on one and belted a hard-hit grounder down the third-base line
The Panthers would hold on to that lead in a pivotal showdown of division rivals and top dogs in the NJIC Patriot in an 11-7 final to improve to 4-0 in league play and 7-3-1 overall
Midland Park now has a one-game lead in first place in the division over the Cougars (6-5-1)
“I looked into the dugout and saw my boys cheering for me,” Vivino said
“For me to come through there after what happened on defense
It was the greatest moment of my baseball career.”
kept the party going after Vivino with an RBI single of his own as part of a thrilling six-run fifth inning

It also ends the Panther’s skid of four straight contests without a win
After beginning the season with a 6-0 record
the Panthers lost three and tied once entering Friday
“This is definitely the most important win of the season so far
“Our heads were down a little bit after these few losses
But our senior leaders and our juniors kept the faith up,” Midland Park’s Braiden Russell added

Alexa Hermanns has long aimed to do track and field in college
She's one of the top small-school sprinters and long jumpers in Bergen County and has her eyes set to join former teammates Kelly Ballen and Stephania Granados at Marist College in Poughkeepsie
that leaves nearly half the academic year with nothing to do
So Hermanns has also stuck with the sport she's done the longest and still enjoys: Soccer
"I wouldn't know what to do with something the first half of the school year if I didn't play," she said
"I love my team and playing with them and it's such a beautiful sport."
Hall of Fame Midland Park soccer coach Jeff Yearing is happy she has stayed around
Hermanns might find her athletic future in flux
Hermanns opened the soccer season with two goals and an assist on the go-ahead goal in a 5-1 win over Hawthorne Christian Academy
then scored all five Panther goals in a thrilling 5-4 win over Harrison
The seven goals in two games gave the four-year starter a career season high before the first week was over
"I never did anything like that in a game before," said Hermanns
who started playing in local recreation camps around Midland Park when she was in first grade
Hermanns played center midfield for most of her junior career before switching to striker when she entered high school
"Center midfield was too much running for me," she said with a laugh
and her early-season heroics have come as a result of that role
"Her maturity and understanding of the game
along with her game-breaking speed has made her more adept at finishing this year," Yearing said
"She's worked really hard on all of her skills and it shows up in her results."
"I'm so grateful to have him as my coach," Hermanns said
"He has so much knowledge of the game and knows so many playing styles
When he got sick and had to miss some games and practices last year while he was undergoing chemo
Hermanns is still looking forward to track season as well
"Some of my best friends are girls I met from other schools and have competed against many times," she said
I'm very competitive and want to beat them and they want to beat me
I love the social aspect of track and field."
While Hermanns' career goal is to become a clinical psychologist
she also takes advanced placement studio art at Midland Park
"I love painting and drawing things from nature
It gives me something else to focus on and it's a way for me to relax."
Of course, one of her new favorite drawings is likely to be the one accompanying this story, the first Girls Athlete of the Week drawing by Bob Rebach, who took over for the retiring legendary artist Charlie McGill
Accomplishment: Alexa scored seven goals in wins over Hawthorne Christian and Harrison to start the season
scoring all five goals in the latter game and also setting up the game-winning goal in the opening game
Also nominated: Emma Jordan of Mahwah for soccer; Rachael Magalhaes of Ridgefield Park
and Sarah Silva of North Arlington for volleyball; and Leah Hong of Dwight-Englewood for field hockey
