MIDVALE — An armed suspect is dead after fleeing from police during a traffic stop in Midvale Friday morning

fled from officers who tried to stop his car near the area of 7350 South and State Street in Midvale
“The driver of the vehicle continued a short distance before being stopped through a high-risk stop

police found an open dump truck in the area of 7420 South and began searching the truck
the officer encountered the fleeing individual
who was observed pointing a firearm at the officer’s head,” UPD said
Gomez then barricaded himself in the bed of the dumb truck with large objects
UPD called for SWAT and other agencies to assist in arresting Gomez
Officers also tried to de-escalate the situation and asked for Gomez to surrender
officers utilized drones to monitor the barricaded individual,” UPD said
the individual discharged a firearm at one of the drones disabling it
Other drones were utilized to monitor his actions.”
Gomez was found with a self-inflicted gunshot
UPD said first responders attempted life-saving measures on Gomez
This incident caused a shelter-in-place order on Cox Lane at approximately 5:30 a.m
Some were even evacuated while multiple SWAT teams searched for the suspect
The Utah Department of Transportation said State Street was also closed in the area to all traffic
Canyons School District communications director Jeff Haney said the search did not directly affect schools

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Court of Appeals has vacated a manslaughter conviction and ordered a new trial for a Midvale man who shot and killed another man during a heated exchange that began with making fun of a car and continued into road rage
Patrick Koaneil Brown admits that he shot and killed Darnell Brown
but he claims that he worked to deescalate the situation and when that did not work and Brown hit his car
"he felt he had no choice but to shoot." The two men were not related
A jury found Patrick Brown guilty of murder on Aug
but they also determined he acted in "imperfect self-defense," which reduced his conviction to manslaughter
Patrick Brown was also found guilty of three counts of felony discharge of a firearm
two first-degree felonies and one third-degree felony
along with possession of a firearm by a restricted person
He was sentenced to two terms of one to 15 years for manslaughter and possession of a firearm as a restricted person
two terms of five years to life for felony discharge of a firearm
and one sentence of three to five years for the remaining count of felony discharge of a firearm
The last term was ordered to run consecutively
meaning he was ordered to spend at least eight years and up to life in prison
he has already served about four years of that sentence
including two years he was given credit for ahead of his sentence
Brown argued that a detective should not have been allowed to testify that Darnell Brown ramming into Patrick Brown's car caused damage more similar to criminal mischief than aggravated assault — which was an explanation to the jury of why perfect self-defense
The appellate judges agreed that the detective should not have testified about legal conclusions and the testimony caused prejudice against Patrick Brown in his trial
His case will now go back to 3rd District Judge Adam Mow for a new trial
Darnell Brown was driving with his fiancee and two daughters while Patrick Brown was selling clothes in his car to Darnell Brown's friend
Patrick Koaneil Brown was found guilty of manslaughter in 2022
after a jury found he reasonably believed he was acting in self-defense but wasn't
That verdict was reversed Thursday after the Utah Appellate Court ruled some testimony from a detective should not have been admitted
(Photo: Salt Lake County Jail)Darnell Brown stopped to talk to his friend and began to make fun of Patrick Brown's Range Rover
Darnell Brown's fiancee reported that he wanted to fight Patrick Brown and got out of the car
leading Patrick Brown to get a gun from his car — leading Darnell Brown to be more willing to fight Patrick Brown
Patrick Brown got into his car and drove away
but Darnell Brown followed for several blocks while yelling
(Patrick) Brown leaned out his window and said
I'm going to shoot you in front of your family.' In response
(Darnell Brown) hit the gas and 'rammed (into) the back of' Brown's vehicle," the opinion says
Patrick Brown made a U-turn and drove toward Darnell Brown
Patrick Brown told officers he came back to get Darnell Brown's tag number because he had hit him
Bystanders reported that Darnell Brown did not seem to be de-escalating the situation; he looked ready to fight
The opinion said that as Patrick Brown drove past Darnell Brown
he slowed down and fired four shots out his window
He said later he thought Darnell Brown had a weapon and may have called someone else to help him fight
I thought he had a weapon," Patrick Brown said in a quote the judges included in their opinion
He maintained at his trial that he acted in justified self-defense
The opinion said prosecutors used the testimony from the officer that the bump would not be considered aggravated assault in their closing arguments at least twice
the admission of that testimony and the prosecutor's overt emphasis on it prejudiced Brown and undermines our confidence in the verdict," the judges ruled
Utah (KUTV) — Police reopened a section of State Street in Midvale following an hours-long standoff that forced the two-block closure as residents in an adjacent neighborhood were asked to either shelter in place or evacuate
It all started with an attempted traffic stop early Friday morning
public information officer for Unified Police Department
An officer attempted to pull over a vehicle at around 3:20 a.m
Race didn't say if the suspect was being pulled over for a traffic violation
or if he was someone authorities were actively seeking
The suspect vehicle was eventually stopped
but not before a passenger exited the car and fled on foot
The passenger ultimately ended up hiding in the back of a dump truck in the area of 7400 South and Cox Lane
UPD later stated that the suspect was seen pointing a gun at an officer who located him
The suspect's gun was fired several times
one of which successfully targeted a police drone
the standoff prompted a response that included K-9 units
which were heard going off throughout the morning standoff
Race announced that the suspect was "no longer a threat," and the roadway was reopened
Police later revealed that the suspect, identified as Luis Gomez, 41, of Provo, had used his gun one last time on himself, resulting in his death
It wasn't clear why Gomez or the driver of the vehicle fled in the first place

MIDVALE — Midvale Mayor Marcus Stevenson has resigned from office less than a week after he was accused of having an affair and being in violation of city policy
The city announced Stevenson's departure Thursday and said City Councilman Paul Glover will step in to fill mayoral duties until the council appoints a replacement — which it is obligated to do within 30 days
City officials said the city received a complaint from Stevenson's wife on Friday that he was having an affair and in violation of city policy
The city prohibits romantic relationships between employees who work within the same chain of command
The city brought in a third-party law firm
which determined the mayor had not broken the law but they were still evaluating whether he violated the city's policy
The investigation was suspended with Stevenson's resignation
I'm submitting my resignation as mayor of Midvale city

and I've determined that it would be best for me to step away at this time
Serving as mayor has been the most rewarding and challenging experience of my life
I truly cannot thank our community enough for giving me the opportunity to serve in this capacity."
A source close to Stevenson's wife confirmed the mayor was having an affair with a woman he met through his job at the city
The couple is in the process of filing for divorce
His profile says he hails from a family devoted to public service
and his proudest accomplishment is his family
Stevenson's social media accounts appear to have been deleted
and the former mayor could not be reached for comment through the contact info listed on Midvale's website
The council issued a statement saying it has accepted Stevenson's resignation
"Though we are deeply disappointed by the circumstances surrounding his departure
we remain committed to moving forward with integrity and accountability," the council said
It did not provide more information about the circumstances of his resignation
"Our priority now is to ensure a smooth transition of leadership," the council continued

We are focused on maintaining the trust of our community and will work to ensure that our leadership reflects the values of accountability and public service."

A problem with processing automatic payments resulted additional charges and late fees for about 1,300 utility customers in Midvale
Utah (KUTV) — A problem with processing automatic payments resulted additional charges and late fees for about 1,300 utility customers in Midvale
The city made the announcement on their Facebook page Tuesday
did not process January automatic transactions
When they discovered the error and tried to make corrections
the full amount due from other months was withdrawn instead
"The bill appeared to show that they were going to have essentially double fees with late fees added onto that,” said Midvale City Manager Matt Dahle
Dahle said this is the first time something like this has happened
Those paying with credit cards got charged for both January and February
but those extra payments have since been voided
“We want to assure residents that all late fees will be refunded
Midvale City is actively working with Xpress Bill Pay to resolve this matter,” the post read
Things were fixed before those charges could hit those whose bank accounts are connected to the system
Anyone with additional issues or questions should contact the utility billing department at 801-567-7200
KUTV asked how something like this could happen
Someone put the wrong dates on for the January payment,” Dahle said
posted on Facebook and put information on their website
As for if everyone who was affected has been notified
Dahle said they feel like they’ve reached everyone they can
Dahle said the city is working with Xpress to see why this happened and make sure it never happens again

Marcus Stevenson’s abrupt resignation as Midvale’s mayor this week came after an allegation surfaced that he was having an affair with a city employee
That accusation came from the mayor’s wife
in circumstances with another individual that gave me reason to believe he was engaged in an extramarital affair,” Nikki Stevenson wrote in a complaint filed with the city last week
Marcus admitted to his affair and indicated it was with ‘someone he works with.’”
The former mayor did not respond to multiple requests Thursday and Friday for comment
Nikki Stevenson told city officials in her letter
which The Salt Lake Tribune obtained through an open records request
that she has “substantial” corroborating evidence of the affair
phone records and direct communication” with the city employee
who she said was involved in the romantic relationship with her husband and is his “subordinate.”
That employee’s name was blacked out in the document
Stevenson’s wife quoted a number of city codes that she said her husband violated in the relationship and asked that he and the employee be put on paid administrative leave during an investigation
when Stevenson announced his resignation Thursday morning in a letter to Midvale City Manager Matt Dahl and members of the City Council
I’m submitting my resignation as mayor of Midvale City
effective immediately,” Stevenson stated in a news release
and I’ve determined that it would be best for me to step away at this time
she said her husband violated his oath of office under a state law that requires elected officials to discharge their duties with fidelity
She also accused him of violating a municipal policy that requires two city employees involved in a “nonspousal romantic
dating or sexual relationship” to notify their department director
She further cited Midvale codes that bar supervisors from having such a relationship with employees they “supervise in the chain of command.”
Her letter also noted a prohibition against “unwelcome sexual advances
and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating
I am concerned that the failure to address this matter could lead to further complications and potential harm to the residents of Midvale City
The issue has already caused subsequent harm to myself and my children
as well as … the other involved individual.”
city officials have declined to divulge why the mayor stepped down or to disclose the nature of the allegation
citing the need to comply with Midvale personnel policies and to protect those involved
which investigated the allegation and cleared Stevenson of breaking state law
He said the firm was in the process of probing alleged violations of city policies when the mayor resigned
effectively ending the need for further inquiry
action is being taken against the city employee involved in the alleged affair
Stevenson was 27 when he was elected in 2021 to lead Midvale’s 36,000 residents, making him the youngest mayor in that city’s history. A political activist, he cut his teeth in the political arena helping with several high-profile campaigns. He also served as political director of the environmental nonprofit O2 Utah
An avid skateboarder, Stevenson was popular with the youth, and he became known as a vocal advocate for affordable housing, community involvement, more recreational opportunities and for his efforts to revitalize Main Street and breathe life into other moribund areas of Midvale.
City Council members expressed dismay at Stevenson’s sudden political exit.
“Though we are deeply disappointed by the circumstances surrounding his departure,” council members stated in a release, “we remain committed to moving forward with integrity and accountability.”
Longtime council member Paul Glover, who is the mayor pro tempore, will serve as interim mayor until the council appoints a permanent replacement within the next 30 days as required by state law.

where (the officer) had to cease his pursuit due to his rear tire going flat," the charges say
Other officers continued chasing the vehicle and watched as "items resembling firearms … were thrown from the vehicle" near the 7800 South off-ramp
"The Subaru attempted to exit and make a U-turn at 7000 South
where it collided with several vehicles and was disabled," police noted
Three men and two teenage boys were taken into custody
Police collected three firearms along the Bangerter Highway
At the apartment where it was determined the shots were fired
and "multiple bullets entered through windows and walls of the apartments," court documents state
were each charged Friday in 3rd District Court with 10 counts of illegal discharge of a firearm
Quintana-Melo and Renteria were also charged with being restricted people in possession of a firearm
Each man was also charged with evidence tampering and criminal mischief
Two teen boys were also taken into custody
Last year, Renteria was arrested following a drive-by shooting and a police chase that resulted in a 2-year-old bystander being hit by a bullet fragment
was also charged in that case as a juvenile with four counts of discharge of a firearm
Renteria was also involved in at least two other shooting investigations in Sandy in 2022, according to juvenile court records, including one in which he was driving a car when a 14-year-old boy in the back seat accidentally shot a 15-year-old boy in the front passenger seat
Quintana-Melo was also involved in a shooting investigation at a Maverik
in July 2022 that resulted in one person being shot in the leg and foot
Utah (KUTV) — Four families were displaced Friday morning following a fire at their apartment complex in Midvale
Unified Fire authorities reported that crews were dispatched to 60 W
15 after receiving reports of a structure fire
firefighters encountered smoke and flames coming from a ground-floor unit
with the fire spreading to the second floor
with one group initiating a fire attack while another focused on evacuating residents from 12 units
resulting in the displacement of four families
One individual was transported to a nearby hospital
but the extent of their injuries was not disclosed
Investigators determined that the fire was ignited by a light left on in the kitchen
“We see this quite frequently in the winter months,” said Unified Fire Cpt
“If you leave any type of potential heat source on around flammable materials
The Red Cross will work with the displaced residents to find them a safe place to stay
Barker noted that the unit where the fire sparked is considered a total loss
The building inspector will assess the damage to surrounding units affected by smoke or water to determine when they can be deemed habitable
No further details have been released at this time
Utah — The Unified Fire Authority responded to an apartment building fire early Saturday morning that forced at least 20 residents to leave their homes because of the damage
and worried about my animals,” said Gavinn Eyre
Eyre explained the horrifying wakeup call he experienced Saturday morning
and this family was running up and down the hall and they were like banging on the doors,” said Eyre
there were people with young children with literally nothing on them
Unified Fire reported that all tenants evacuated and no injuries were recorded
Eyre said neighbors jumping into action was a saving grace
but I am very lucky that I have neighbors like them to come and bang on a third door and not care about their stuff in their own apartment
I care about the other residents in the building,” said Eyre
Residents told us how thankful they were that no one was hurt
and they were telling me stories about how everyone was talking and seemed kind of crazy
The Utah Red Cross said they were sent to assist; four apartments were damaged while others were without power for several hours
they were appreciating their community filled with good neighbors
“I am feeling really grateful and believing that there is hope,” said Eyre
Utah — Three young men and two minors were arrested Friday night after police say they fired around 20 shots in downtown Midvale
Main Street when witnesses called the Unified Police Department to report that they heard gunshots
but they said the driver fled and led them on a multi-city pursuit
the officers saw the passengers throw two handguns out the window
The pursuit finally came to an end when the suspect crashed into a bystander's vehicle
and officers were able to disable the suspects' vehicle near 7000 South and Bangerter Highway
Police said they found shell casings on the floor of the suspects' car
and more than 20 more at the original scene of the "shots fired" report
There were also two other scenes where casings were found
UPD said several buildings were hit by bullets
and there was a bullet hole in the rear passenger door of the car
Three adults were arrested: 19-year-old Christian Pena Renteria (the driver)
All three are being held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail
They are all facing 10 counts of "felony discharge of a firearm" and one misdemeanor for tampering with evidence
Renteria is also facing charges of reckless driving and failure to stop at the command of police
A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old were booked into a juvenile detention facility
UPD said all five suspects are "known gang members."
The department is asking local residents for video evidence of the shooting
Anyone who has such footage is asked to call UPD at 801-743-7000 or email the detective in charge of the case: bmoore@updsl.org

(WMTV) - A 17-year-old boy was arrested after a fight with a close family member in early Saturday morning
officers were dispatched to a residence the 700 block of N
they found a 39-year-old victim suffering from multiple stab wounds across different parts of his body
MPD confirmed that the teen arrested and the victim are close family members who were living together
The Dane County District Attorney confirmed Wednesday
as self-defense was a major deciding factor
“The victim and the suspect had been staying at that place together
I don’t know if other family members were living with them at the time
but there are other family members present when this incident occurred,” said MPD Public Information Officer Stephanie Fryer
The 17-year-old was on scene when officers arrived and was immediately detained
MPD says he and the victim were involved in a physical fight when the stabbing occurred
officers received reports of a physical altercation
“Someone called stating that someone had been stabbed and that they were not conscious or breathing,” Fryer said
Fryer added that other family members were present
“Multiple people have told us that there was some type of physical altercation that was going on
some type of fight between the suspect and the victim and that the victim then pulled out a knife and did the stabbing.” Fryer said
as well as our officers who initially responded to that call and all have been very cooperative.”
MPD says the knife used in the fight was small enough to fit into the teen’s back pocket
“So the suspect had not been in Madison for full year yet and mentioned that he kept the knife on him for protection just because it was a larger city,” Fryer said
The knife has been recovered and police say that this was an isolated incident

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A man has been sentenced after he was found guilty of bankruptcy fraud
Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah recommended he be sentenced to four years in prison followed by a term of supervised release
Mitchell reportedly filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 and sought to eliminate more than $600,000 in debts
Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah said
it was discovered he owned and controlled several storage trailers full of hundreds of new household appliances at a storage facility
MORE CRIME IN UTAH: 54-year-old woman accused of maintaining drug lab in home to make, sell crack cocaine
and rangers — appliances he previously borrowed roughly $500,000 to buy
Mitchell planned to hide the assets from the bankruptcy court and sell them for his own benefit
and repairing the appliances for building contractors
Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah said Mitchell " attempted to selfishly deprive the bankruptcy system established for honest debtors seeking relief in a financial crisis."
The Japanese dollar-store chain has confirmed that it plans to open three locations in Utah in 2025 — one of them in Midvale
A popular chain that sells low-cost “Japanese inspired” goods is coming to Utah – with one of its first stores slated for Midvale
the American wing of a chain referred to by fans as a “Japanese dollar store,” is planning to open three stores in Utah starting next summer
The first Daiso (pronounced “DYE-soh”) store in Utah is planned for The Shops at Fort Union in Midvale — and the company’s website has already posted job listings
and the increasing popularity of diverse retail options make it an ideal location for Daiso’s next phase of growth,” said Davis in a statement Friday
Davis did not say where the other two Utah locations might be
Jada Kali, 24, who lives in the Salt Lake area, posted on TikTok (her handle is @bobamotivation) when she first heard rumors of Daiso opening in Midvale
“We’ve been needing this for such a long time,” Kali said on the video
which had earned more than 90,000 views as of Friday
People commenting on Kali’s post replied with such sentiments as “my prayers have been answered” and “I fear I might buy everything.”
Kali told The Salt Lake Tribune that shopping at a Daiso store takes her back to her childhood in the Philippines – when she spent her time in similar stores
searching for “cute bento boxes” and stationery that would get her “excited” for school
“Even though Daiso is a Japanese brand and the Philippines is more southeast Asia
there are still some similarities,” Kali said
at least for me – and maybe other Asian Americans might feel the same way – [it’s] kind of like having a piece of home with us here.”
The company, founded in Hiroshima, Japan, is known for its affordable home goods, beauty products and stationery. Daiso opened its first U.S. store in 2005 at a mall in a Seattle suburb
The chain has since expanded to more than 150 locations in the United States — with dozens in California and Texas with multiple stores in the Las Vegas
a former Deseret Book location next to a Five Below store
“We’re excited – we know that they’re a big draw,” said Katie Mikula
a leasing agent with Mountain West Commercial
which represents the Fort Union shopping center
“They’re going to be a new cool tenant that people have followed for a really long time.”
Daiso’s arrival is expected to come about a year after another Asian-based chain — the Korean grocery giant H Mart — made its Utah debut with a store in West Jordan last June
Kali said that she sees Daiso’s arrival as a “start” for growing diverse businesses in Utah, and as a way to create community and belonging. She said that after the Utah Legislature passed HB261 in early 2024 — dismantling diversity programs in state schools and government — people are looking “elsewhere” for that sense of belonging.
“I hope long-term, growing diverse businesses will show, especially to our politicians and government here in Utah, [that] we need diversity,” Kali said. “We need those spaces here.”

The vehicle was stopped via a "high-risk stop" by officers a short distance later
an officer discovered him in the bed of a dump truck
Gomez allegedly pointed a firearm at the officer's head before barricading himself in the truck
along with armored tactical vehicles from multiple agencies
were deployed to the standoff scene as police attempted to negotiate with Gomez
police said Gomez fired at and disabled a drone being used by law enforcement
police said Gomez shot himself and was declared dead at the scene
State Street was reopened a short time later
"We understand the emotional toll incidents like this can have on the community and want to express our gratitude for the public’s patience and cooperation," police said in a statement
"Our thoughts are with all affected by this situation."

MIDVALE — After a devastating crash in Midvale Saturday
officials announced Monday the 16-year-old driver who died was identified as a student at Hillcrest High School
the student was Elijah Exodus Bustamante Martinez
with 19-year-old Donny Gabriel Castro Hernandez in the passenger seat
known to his family as “Eli,” was described as someone who reached for the stars and encouraged others to do the same
Destiny Tovey said he had a way of connecting with people that inspired them
“He would look at somebody and he would already build kind of a connection with their spirit before he even talked with them
before he got to know them,” she said
“And then when he did talk with them
he would have those one-on-one conversations of like ‘Who do you want to be in the future?'”
“The one thing I always loved about my brother was no matter what race
whatever — he always wanted everybody to just find a beautiful afterlife.”
Hillcrest High School student Elijah Exodus Bustamante Martinez
was killed in a crash in Midvale on March 22
Tovey said Eli had just finished delivering a speech on Friday
at Brigham Young University about how to improve writing for teachers
and had many meaningful friends he made at both Hillcrest High School and Northridge High School in Layton
Eli had also just completed a school project — a video she helped him film
“We directed it together,” she said
“His goal was to get a Chevy Impala car to be inside of
but then he wanted an officer to assist him with the video.”
Tovey said she and her husband suggested they get a costume and have one of them act out the role of the officer
he had to have a real cop there,” she said
“So he did use the school cop at Hillcrest
Tovey said the video turned out “fantastic” and she hoped that the school would play it in honor of him
Eli was also on the youth city council for the mayor’s office in Midvale
Tovey said he founded a writing center there
He was also running to become the next student body president
“He wanted to be the president because he felt like he could actually influence others in a good way,” she said
“And I think he was absolutely right with that
In addition to helping others “get their potential in life,” Tovey said he had high ambitions of his own
“His goal was to graduate high school with a 4.0 GPA and then go on to the University of Utah and become a surgeon,” she said
“And then go to Harvard University after that.”
“He really loved his family and his friends
and his mother more than anything,” Tovey said
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and would attend every Sunday
but he would help others find their own connection to their own higher entity
“He wanted everyone in this life to praise each other to help each other,” Bustamante said
“Not only that but also while we’re here basically like to reach for the stars.”
Tovey said if he had last words for the world
“One thing that he would say is … ‘If you ever feel like you’re down
if you ever feel like you’re not doing well as a person
that you think about me and you think about your goals
and you push forward past your inadequacies,” she said
“Push past that and move forward because anything is possible.”
Eli’s family and friends launched a *GoFundMe to help in their time of need

Stevenson made the surprise announcement Thursday morning in a letter to City Manager Matt Dahl and members of the City Council
Stevenson did not respond to phone messages seeking further comment about what prompted his exit
said the city received a letter Friday from someone — he declined to identify the person — who alleged the mayor had violated state law and a city ordinance
the city enlisted a third-party law firm to conduct an investigation
which concluded the mayor did not break state law
“We were still in the process of evaluating whether a city policy had been violated ..
“That effectively ended [our] looking into the issue with regard to that policy.”
declined to divulge why Stevenson stepped down and what specific law and policy he was accused of violating
“We are protecting the people involved,” Dahl explained

we remain committed to moving forward with integrity and accountability,” council members wrote in the release

Stevenson was 27 when he was elected in 2021 to lead the suburban city of 36,000 residents
becoming the youngest mayor in that city’s history

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Council has voted to pursue purchasing a property in Midvale that would become the new county government center
The council voted 7-1 to approve authorization of a contract to pursue the $55 million commercial property Tuesday
but an exact address of the location was not given
The Salt Lake County Government Center at 2001 S
State was built in the mid-1980s and is almost 40 years old
the county conducted an assessment of the building
"Salt Lake County recently conducted a Service Opportunity Assessment Review (SOAR) — a collaborative initiative to assess and optimize public service delivery while effectively and efficiently allocating resources in an accessible manner
One of the main SOAR findings was the government center
no longer adequately and affordably meets public and employee needs," county Mayor Jenny Wilson said in the release
The assessment also found the estimated cost of maintenance and renovations needed in the building would be at least $225 million
The county was then made aware of the opportunity to purchase a property with a nine-year-old building in Midvale for $55 million
Salt Lake County will enter into a contract to explore purchasing the property
using a combination of funds that would have been allocated for government center maintenance and renovations
This opportunity will save taxpayers a substantial amount and improve customer service," the news release says
The release says the building in question is located in the center of the county
is just minutes from I-15 and is next to a TRAX station
The county council said it is exploring options to offset the purchase which could include selling the existing government center or leasing the property
The county has a 60-day due diligence process in which it will have a council presentation
for the public and employees to learn more and offer feedback.
