SearchAward-winning S.F. bakery Tartine to return to Mill Valley roots at Strawberry VillageNaomi FriedlandMar 123 min readUpdated: Mar 12
A rendering shows Tartine Bakery's future home at the Strawberry Village shopping center
(Studio BBA via Edens)Renowned Bay Area bakery Tartine will make its Marin debut at the Strawberry Village shopping center later this year
while popular East Bay Latin American restaurant Cholita Linda is also planning its first North Bay location at the outdoor mall
the real-estate developer that owns the center
called ‘America’s most influential,’ has a cult following
drawing hourlong lines for its fresh breads and award-winning pastries
(Amy Holt via Tartine Bakery)Tartine’s expansion means residents will no longer have to make the drive into San Francisco — or brave the notorious hourlong lines — for the bakery’s acclaimed sourdough
pastries and lunch items like seasonal quiches
smoked salmon and avocado tartines and hearty salads
The Marin location also marks a return to Tartine’s roots: Husband-wife baker Chad Robertson and pastry chef Liz Prueitt got their start with Wood-Fire Baking in Point Reyes before they opened Bay Village Breads in Mill Valley in 1999
They left Mill Valley for San Francisco in 2002 to open their first Tartine location in the Mission district
they won the James Beard Foundation Award as the best pastry chefs in America
and Bon Appétit magazine called Tartine “America’s most-influential bakery” in 2017
which now has two other locations in San Francisco and six each in Los Angeles and Seoul
plans to set up in about 3,091 square feet of space across two long-vacant storefronts in the same cluster as Safeway
and across the way from Rims & Goggles
Representatives could not be reached by The Ark’s press deadline
Cholita Linda will be serving up tacos as part of its Latin American menu later this year
(via Cholita Linda)Cholita Linda will be located farther down the same corridor
in a currently vacant a 2,192-square-foot storefront across from SkinSpirit and Bella Boutique
Its location in Strawberry Village will also be that restaurant’s first foray into Marin after establishing four locations in the East Bay — in Oakland
Berkeley and Walnut Creek — and one in San Francisco’s Ferry Building
Oakland native Vanessa Chavez and her husband
first opened the restaurant as a farmers market stand at Jack London Square in 2008
The menu reflects Chavez’s roots — her mother is Peruvian Chinese and her father is Cuban and Mexican — with Latin American-influenced street food
Sozeri said he and Chavez were looking to expand their restaurant to other locations in the Bay Area and it made sense to open up a spot in Marin County because there was not one there yet
“It’s always exciting to open a new restaurant,” Sozeri said
He said he likes growing the business and sharing the concept and brand to new customers
“Marin is just beautiful,” he said noting that each of their restaurant locations has its own character
just the whole environment and location spoke to us.”
Sozeri said he and his wife signed the lease for the Strawberry location on March 4 and will hopefully open later this year
Bringing in the new restaurants is among a series of moves Edens has made in an effort to rejuvenate the center since purchasing it in 2022
including opening an outdoor greenspace for gathering and live music
installing public art and giving the center new paint and signage
the vice president of development and investment at Edens
said in a release the additions of the two restaurants
alongside other improvements at the center
are part of “tremendous complements to the vibrant community hub that Strawberry Village has provided this community for decades.”

Free State sophomore outfielder Ryker Mahnke celebrates a run during the game against Mill Valley Thursday
The Free State baseball team needed just two runs on Thursday night
relying on its pitching and defense to take down Sunflower League rival Mill Valley 2-0
We had to make some excellent plays defensively to win the ballgame,” head coach Mike Hill said
“That’s what you got to have in low-scoring
Time and time again throughout the home matchup
Free State was able to escape jams thanks to its defense
whether it be with a double play or a sliding catch
“You’ve got to be able to have a play that will ignite you defensively and maybe take a little something away from them on offense,” Hill said
The Firebirds got off to a strong start behind pitcher Zane Shaw
getting the first two outs of the game from groundouts before Shaw ended the inning with a strikeout
the Firebirds got two runners on with walks
but both runners were stranded with an inning-ending groundout
The defense continued to have Shaw’s back in the bottom of the second after a leadoff single by Mill Valley
as shortstop Charlie Peters started a double play for the first two outs of the inning
and was on the assisting end of a groundout to retire the side
I don’t feel like I have to throw that perfect pitch because there I got my defense,” Shaw said
“I can just hit my spot and I know my defense can make the play.”
Peters reached base in the bottom of the second thanks to an error by the Jagars
but the Firebirds weren’t able to score
Mill Valley threatened in the third by loading the bases with two outs
Free State quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with a single
and hit-by-pitch before Ryker Mahnke scored the first run of the game
Andrew Zimmerschied drove in Ben Graves for the second run of the inning
you’ve got to have those momentum changers and two-out base hits,” Hill said
“Those things are so important in games like this.”
and Shaw threw two strikeouts to quickly retire the side in the top of the fourth
Owen Lester reached first with a hit-by-pitch
but another double play and a strikeout quickly ended the fourth inning
Shaw recorded another strikeout in the top of the fifth and induced a groundout and a popout to end the inning
The Firebirds got two runners on in their next opportunity to bat before a strikeout ultimately ended the inning
Mill Valley posed a significant threat in the sixth inning with a one-out single
a double put runners at second and third with two outs
Shaw’s outing concluded following the walk
Shaw struck out five batters while walking four and allowing two hits
“He had multiple pitches going tonight
That’s the whole key to anything,” Hill said
“You’re not going to beat a good team with the fastball
and he had to dig deep a couple times and I thought he competed well.”
Added Shaw: “My slider has been off the past couple of games
I really found it today and that helped a lot.”
needing just one pitch to end the inning and keep the Jaguars off the scoreboard with a groundout
which Hill called it a “big time effort.”
Free State quickly went down in the bottom of the sixth inning
but Graves closed out the game in the top of the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and a lineout
The Firebirds are now 11-1 and will conclude their week with one more game on Saturday
traveling to Wichita to play Wichita Heights at Equity Bank Park

It’s a tale as old as time: a house with character was given a quick, builder-grade remodel by its previous owners, stripping it of its charm. “We wanted to bring back the original 1970s design character and personalization to the home,” says interior designer Leah Harmatz of Field Theory
the home’s stunning surroundings influenced its design
the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on views of towering redwoods had an almost cathedral-like feel,” Leah says
“I wanted to make sure the interiors also had an earthy
natural quality that reflected the surroundings.”
The windows play a big part in the home’s design
The window trim was carefully chosen to create the perfect frame
Leah and team skipped wood trim and went with a simple drywall return on the newer window additions to create a modern
which also went well with the ‘70s architecture
they replaced the trim with a lower profile one with mitered corners
In addition to the towering redwoods and the ‘70s architecture
the design was also inspired by the homeowner’s collection of art
and ceramic light fixtures infused the space with character and warmth
“We didn’t want to rip out all of the brand-new
perfectly functional cabinets and countertops for sustainability and budgeting reasons
so we figured out ways to integrate the new countertop extension
To further open up the kitchen to the living room and to views of the outdoors, the design team knocked down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, which expanded the space. For the banquette nook, Leah and team designed the white oak dining table with Matt Scanlan to fit perfectly
but the natural wood trim keeps the ‘70s vibes going
An additional window on the adjacent wall was added to capture light from the south and open up the space
Custom built-in shelving was designed next to the fireplace to display the client’s record player
Leah designed custom floor-to-ceiling white oak built-in closets with a local millworker. And to finish the space, In Common With light fixtures were installed
and really does make one feel like they’re living in the trees
it feels immediately meditative and deeply personal
and so much more delivered straight to your door every quarter

Tartine is expanding to Mill Valley’s Strawberry Village this year
San Francisco’s Tartine is expanding its bakeries to the North Bay
reconnecting with its roots in Marin County
The bakery will open a location in Mill Valley’s Strawberry Village this year
according to a news release from the shopping center’s parent company
The original chefs behind Tartine, Chad Robertson and Elizabeth (Liz) Prueitt, got their start with a small shop called Bay Village Bakery in Point Reyes, according to their website and cookbook
the couple moved to San Francisco where they opened their first location on 18th and Guerrero
“Tartine began in Marin County with Liz and Chad
we believe Strawberry Village is the perfect location,” said CEO Dar Vasseghi in a statement
Mill Valley’s location will be a 3,091 square foot space with a light
It will offer its signature baked goods and menu items including its French style open-faced sandwiches such as the smoked salmon and avocado tartine
They may also offer menu items that will be exclusive to the Mill Valley location
Latin American restaurant Cholita Linda and Hot Yoga Republic round out the shops joining Tartine as new tenants at Strawberry Village
With locations in the East Bay and San Francisco, Cholita Linda serves fish tacos
sandwiches and dishes with Peruvian influences
This is its first location in the North Bay
Hot Yoga Republic opened its second location in Mill Valley last month
Edens Vice President of Development and Investment
said in a statement that they are excited to welcome the new stores
“These are tremendous complements to the vibrant community hub that Strawberry Village has provided this community for decades.”

The Tartine sourdough will soon be rising at the Strawberry Village shopping center in Mill Valley
as the famed bakery chain is expanding with a new Marin County spot that will apparently offer some exclusive items not available at other locations
And apparently they're now adding another one, much closer to home. The Chronicle reports that Tartine is opening a Marin County location
at Mill Valley’s upscale Strawberry Village shopping center about ten miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge
“We wanted to expand into Marin County because we know we have a strong customer base there,” Tartine CEO Dar Vasseghi told the Chronicle
in a statement probably no one would argue with
A rendering of the new Marin County Tartine location is seen above
and the Chron reports that the 3,000-square-foot bakery and cafe is expected to open “late this year.” The Chronicle also adds the delicious nugget that this new Tartine will offer a few menu items that are “unique to this location,” though does not spill the beans on what those are
The report mentions that the artisan fish taco chain Cholita Linda will also be opening a new spot in the same Mill Valley shopping center
though does not give any timeline on that opening
Cholita Linda currently has four East Bay locations
The Strawberry Village shopping center is an open-air mall that’s been in Mill Valley since 1964

The palm tree-lined mall has weekly farmers’ markets
and is currently also home to a handful of restaurants
though its anchor tenant is a giant Safeway

From a chat with Ralph Fiennes to a chance encounter with several Petalumans
the annual festival’s first night was filled with cinematic memories
As a witchy friend of mine recently posted
thoughfor a decidedly more cinematic reason
The rich autumn thrill that many people get from the MLB post season
and that others find in the days leading up to Halloween
I myself experience every year at the 10-day-long Mill Valley Film Festival
Ever since I moved from L.A. to the North Bay in 1981, I have looked forward to this annual 10-day-long festival. I enjoy the challenge of catching as many films as possible, and soaking up the boisterous elegance of the parties. But I especially look forward to engaging in the cinema-focused conversations that are key to the Mill Valley Film Festival experience
Officially kicking off the festival (www.mvff.com) was the tensely-pitched Vatican thriller “Conclave,” starring Oscar-winner Ralph Fiennes as a Roman Catholic cardinal tasked with overseeing the election of a new pope
and directed by Oscar-winner Edward Berger
There were simultaneous presentations of the high-profile film on the Sequoia Theater’s twin screens in Mill Valley
and all three screens at San Rafael’s Christopher B
there was a brief red carpet event at Mill Valley’s Outdoor Art Club
where I had the privilege of chatting with Fiennes and Berger
he still felt excitement when reading a new script
and I asked Berger what excited him about directing Fiennes in this new project
or something that provides an opportunity to explore something I haven’t had a chance to engage with
while I have always been interested in the dramatic possibilities of someone struggling with their faith
I also relished the opportunity to play a priest who is a bit of a detective
and his investigative approach – and the quality of the writing in the script through which that approach is portrayed – I found incredibly appealing
It blew me away and I knew I had to do it.”
whose Oscar-winning “All Quiet on the Western Front” Fiennes found to be “a shattering experience,” was just gravy on the potatoes
he said that directing Fiennes in a role this good turned out to be as satisfying and rewarding as he’d anticipated
and I suppose I should not say this in public without your approval,” Berger said to Fiennes
who nodded his support to whatever was about to be said
Ralph is one of the most engaged and committed performers I’ve known
He gives every bit of himself to every scene
not just for me but for the entire cast and crew.”
while introducing “Conclave” to the audience in the first of the two Sequoia auditoriums
Berger charmed the attendees with his initial impressions of the North Bay
“After taking my crew into the freezing cold and mud to make ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ in the Czech Republic
where every day was loud and cold and dirty
I felt I owed them a trip to somewhere nice
so I took them to Rome to make ‘Conclave’ in the most beautiful city on Earth,“ he said
a large number of us produced our phones and called up the MVFF app to cast our vote for Audience Favorite
It’s an annual award that will be presented at the end of the festival to whichever movie gets the most positive votes
Most of those not yet voting made a break for the exit
to head to Larkspur’s Marin Country Mart for the opening night gala party
With my son Anderson tagging along plus-one movie companion
Another red carpet led us past the check-in table
to where volunteers were handing out champagne flutes brimming with sparkling wine
As music played and various food purveyors served up delicious tastes of everything from falafels and pasta to pork sliders and pizza
the most important part of the Mill Valley Film Festival – the quest for a good post-film conversation
It’s did not take long to spot Petaluma’s Juliet and Dave Pokorny
Juliet is working the MVFF as its General Manager of Festival Operations
as she’s been working to keep things flowing through evening
Dave – taking a break from running Petaluma’s Once Upon a Slush snack shop – actually had a chance to see tonight’s film
who caught the film in one of the San Rafael screenings
Given that I was chewing my way through a slider
I gave a brief thumbs up as Andy – who contributes his cinematic opinions for the Argus-Courier as one of the its Rivertown Reviews “screen team” – launched into his own brief analysis of the film
Be in the lookout for that review when “Conclave” hits theaters on Oct

“I had a chance to see ‘Conclave’ at the Telluride Film Festival in August
but I knew I’d bee seeing it on opening night here
I think there will be Oscar nominations for this
As is the time-tested tradition when encountering another regular in the first few days of the festival
we concluded our conversation by taking turns answering the question
the list includes Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” a look at the first episode of Saturday Night Live to be broadcast
Malcolm Washington’s “The Piano Lesson,” adapted from the Tony-winning August Wilson play
director Steve McQueen’s “Blitz,” which seems to be a blend of Dickensian adventure and WWII historical drama
set in England during the titular bombardment of London

“I know someone who saw it in New York,” he admitted
we have a chance to form a whole bunch of opinions about a whole slew of films
I may end of loving “Nightbitch” or hating it

BELCHERTOWN — Throw out whatever it is you think you know about Mill Valley Golf Links
what they know or remember about the 18-hole course off of Mill Valley Road is that it was a rundown 9-hole track earlier this century
you’d be in for quite the surprise if you haven’t played there since then
Under the ownership of Tim and Nancy Kurty
Mill Valley has flipped from a course nobody wanted to play into a gorgeous and popular destination for locals
From the time the Kurtys took over in 1999 to now
the amount of people playing golf at their course has quadrupled
And ever since all the changes that have been made
and it all can be credited to the vision of Tim Kurty and the landscape prowess of superintendent Jason Colbath
the fairways are tight and everything is in great shape,” Tim Kurty said
And we’re constantly changing and modifying our course to make it more challenging for the younger players
I think a lot of courses are running out the clock
Mill Valley plays 6,525 yards from the tips
and the par 71’s course record is nowhere even close to par
The tips play impossibly hard because of the narrow tee shots and length of certain holes
so that’s exactly why the record is only an 84
one town local and seven-time LPGA tour winner Silvia Bertolaccini
The three had the blueprint to renovate the course and make it 18 holes
but none of them had any idea how long the process would take
“We were all kind of naive as to the amount of time it took to renovate the course and build the other nine,” Kurty said
And now Mill Valley is much more than it ever was
and because Kurty is constantly trying to evolve the course each season
so much so that his wife jokes that he’s never satisfied with it
It’s a pretty course with fantastic greens
An absolute gem for the price – $40 for 18 with a cart
“We try to have the best conditions of all the courses
at the best prices; that’s what we try to do here,” Kurty said
And on top of that we try to have the best conditions.”
The theme across Hampshire County continues
as typically the hardest hole on each golf course has been one that requires a draw and needs to be landed in a precise location
Such is the case with the 17th hole at Mill Valley
there might’ve been four or five different holes that could’ve gotten the nod as most difficult
It cannot be stressed enough: left is completely dead on this hole
Even if you find your tee shot down the left side rough
Missing left blocks out that option completely
Like almost every other hole at Mill Valley
The only way to get up to the green in two shots is to hit the ball on the right side of the fairway and hope it’s far enough to get around the corner – which you can’t cut thanks to a huge tree standing on its own
blocking the option to shave some distance off your second shot
The green is pretty straightforward once you get there
but you’ll be happy to even sniff a par putt on 17
and it’s one of the longest holes we have,” Kurty said of 17
Every hole is basically cut out of the woods
it’s long and narrow but there aren’t any severe slopes
Everything is in our yardage book on how to play every hole
and you have to be on the right side of the fairway.”
The 13th hole at Mill Valley might just be the coolest golf hole I’ve seen throughout my journey across Hampshire County this summer
The tee box is over 100 feet above the fairway
and you’re essentially looking straight down at your landing point in the fairway
your heart rate may spike when setting up to hit your first shot
You can see the entire mountain range in the background
and when the leaves change color this fall
the already stunning views become that much more vibrant
And the cart path ride down to the fairway is quite the adventure
You just have to make sure any open containers are empty or close to it before you head down
There isn’t a whole lot else to say about 13
you won’t want to leave the tee box once you’re up there
you’d wish you could set up a lawn chair and sit there all day to take in the scenery
but it’s at least 100 feet of elevation from the tee down to the fairway,” Kurty said
