One of New Jersey’s most iconic delis is opening its first Somerset County location next month
The Millburn Deli will open in the Village at Bridgewater Commons at the former home of Banana Republic and across from Cava in mid-May
It’s known for sandwiches like The Gobbler
Food on wheels: The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck is rolling to Bridgewater Commons. Here's when
Those sandwiches and the others on the menu will be the same in Bridgewater as they are at the other delis
and all products come from the same places
What will be different at Bridgewater Commons is that it will feature Millburn Deli’s new interior design and logo
The design will be rolled out at the other locations in the next few months
The 2,233-square-foot deli with a dozen seats will have bright burgundy and navy colors
and a white tile wall showcasing Chip the pickle
the Millburn Deli’s new mascot (the deli serves a pickle with every sandwich)
New arrivals: A look inside New Jersey's first Bojangles restaurant
“The look will be more modern and updated so as we grow
you’ll know you’re in a Millburn Deli,” said Rich Nemet
who co-owns the deli alongside Andrew and Diana Morgan
Opening in Somerset County is a natural evolution for the Millburn Deli
and he hopes to open delis throughout the East Coast
“I’ve been a customer for 25 years and as a fan of our food
I want to bring it to as many people as possible,” he said
“There aren’t many sandwich options in the Bridgewater area and be amongst Cava
it’s a good food destination with lots of business and corporations nearby.”

Drawing inspiration from 15th-century England
Millburn's whimsical Rabbit House is a piece of architectural history
listed in late January for $2.4 million by Douglass Holmes and Jacqueline Sturm of Howard Hanna Rand Realty
was designed by renowned architect Joy Wheeler Dow
had a distinct purpose: as a place for Dow and his new bride to raise a young family
was a New York City native who abandoned his early pursuits in the financial industry to become a self-taught practitioner of architecture
To say Dow liked architecture and homes in particular was a vast understatement
In his 1904 book "American Renaissance; a Review of Domestic Architecture," Dow wrote: "Civilized man
the dwelling-place stands for his most important institution
Dow arrived in Millburn with his sister and widowed mother in about 1882
Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society records show
and in 1890 he financed and built his first custom home
He followed that small stone home on Sagamore Road with a larger one next door
He owned both for a time but eventually sold the first and got started on the next one
the home drew inspiration from the 15th-century Ancient House
"He was not an innovator like Frank Lloyd Wright
but was probably as good as anybody at accurate — and we’ll say pure — renditions of the houses
recalled in a 1979 interview with the historical society
who was born in 1905 and lived in the Rabbit House as a youngster
shortly after the marriage of Dow to Elizabeth Goodchild
the daughter of a local stockbroker who had hired Dow to build his Millburn home in 1898
It was the Year of the Rabbit in 1903-1904
and that may deserve credit for the home's name
There are solid wood floors and intricate moldings
and period details abound throughout the 7,000‑square‑foot
Modern upgrades have been integrated to allow contemporary living without sacrificing historical integrity
Among these improvements are a new 400‑amp underground electric service
a modern tile roof and a priority heating system featuring ornate cast-iron radiators
has three bathrooms and a seven‑car garage with about 1,000 square feet of unfinished space above
The home is set on nearly three‑quarters of an acre of level land a short walk from South Mountain Reservation
During his years in Millburn's Wyoming section
including one for his sister on Linden Street
He refused jobs for which he had no passion and gleefully provided tours to point out every detail of his creations
his children recalled in the 1979 interview
His homes were not just appreciated by Dow himself
but made him famous on the pages of the big home and architecture magazines
He moved his then-enlarged family to Summit
where he designed the city's iconic Universalist church
before leaving a decade later for New England
A family ownership group has sold an apartment and retail building in Millburn for $4 million
in a newly announced deal by The Kislak Co
The brokerage firm’s Jeff Squires represented the seller
noting that the property at 357 Millburn Ave
includes 15 residential units and four retail spaces
Flotteron and Davidson LLP provided legal representation for the seller and buyer
Jared Sobel of Walker & Dunlop originated agency financing
“Multifamily properties in premier locations such as the Short Hills area rarely come on the market,” said Squires
“This property had been owned by the same family for over 50 years spanning two generations
Kislak quickly procured a purchaser who agreed to move forward on a noncontingent basis with a fast closing
They appreciated the unique opportunity to acquire a multigenerational asset in one of New Jersey’s most exclusive downtown locations
The sales price of $200,000 per unit demonstrates investors’ appetite for well-positioned assets.”
the three-story brick building has 15 one- and two-bedroom apartments on the top floors with four high-end retailers on the ground level
Kislak added that the 12,871-square-foot building has undergone significant renovations over the years with new kitchen cabinets and appliances
as well as updated bathroom tiles and fixtures
The fully occupied property is also minutes from Route 24 and Interstate 78
while residents are in the middle of the downtown shopping district
near two arboretums and a short drive from the Mall at Short Hills
has been covering New Jersey commercial real estate for 13 years
Many industry leaders view him as the go-to real estate reporter in the state
a role he is eager to continue as the editor of Real Estate NJ
He is a lifelong New Jersey resident who has spent a decade covering the great Garden State
Restaurant chain Bojangles has opened along a major commercial corridor in Piscataway as part of a previously announced deal brokered by The Goldstein Group

New York
New Jersey when you have a show at the Paper Mill PlayhouseGoing to the playhouse is how some of us get a sneak peek of what may be headed for Broadway
When Disney’s The Little Mermaid begins performances at the Tony Award-winning Paper Mill Playhouse on May 29, New York theaterphiles will start making their way west to catch the show
has been a fundamental pre-Broadway step for new productions and a hub for world-class theatrical revivals
it’s been the site of the world premieres of The Wanderer (2022), Hercules (2023), The Great Gatsby (2023) and Take The Lead (2025). So it’s become a regular trek for those of us who love quality live theater and want to get a sneak peek of what may be headed for Broadway
As a theater journalist who sees a lot of Broadway shows, it’s so refreshing when I can walk to the theater in my own backyard. So, here are my recommendations on how to make the most of your day when you’re catching a show at the Paper Mill Playhouse
RECOMMENDED: The best weekend getaways from NYC
Head to Penn Station and take NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex Line to Millburn
and if it’s express during rush hour on a weekday
but the direct ride is about 40-45 minutes
seven-minute scenic walk through a park and past the town’s recreational fields
With warmer weather on the way, have lunch or dinner outside at La Pergola. The Italian restaurant has one of the best outdoor dining gardens in the area with plenty of umbrellas and trees for shade
comes on a cutting board-sided plate that’s big enough to share.
A post shared by La Pergola Restaurant (@lapergolanj)
The good news is that all of these restaurants are all in proximity to each other
a five-minute walk to the theater and have outdoor seating
You’ll likely be sitting next to a table also going to the show
Make sure to make a reservation at least two hours before curtain.
Heading to a matinee? Book a reservation well in advance for the newly opened Whisk & Willow. The breakfast
brunch and lunch spot has been an instant hit in the neighborhood
I usually order the So-Cal Breakfast bowl and my son loves the Mini Brioche French Toast bites.
A post shared by Willow & Whisk (@willow.and.whisk)
If you’re spending most of the day in town
Take a stroll along the paved loop at Taylor Park and enjoy scenic views of the lake
There are also basketball and tennis courts as well as a playground for kids
Cycle Bar and Pure Barre offer fitness classes downtown.
A post shared by PAPER RIBBON & WRAP (@paperribbon)
For a quick bite, Liv Breads is one of the best bakeries in the state to stop in for a nosh
moist challah—but they often sell out by the late afternoon. Its $25 babka is buttery
chocolate layers that melt in your mouth. It also sells what I think are the best chocolate chip cookies around and the croissants are to die-for
but it’s worth ordering for the crust alone.
Across from the playground is Splurge Bakery
which often sells great Jewish Holiday-themed baked goods
If you’re going to an evening show, it closes between 4:30 and 5pm
A post shared by Liv Breads Artisan Bakery and Coffee Bar (@livbreads)
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is opening soon in addition to the current Häagen-Dazs storefront. For lunch, the Millburn Deli is also a staple in town
but the salads and sandwiches with names like “The Godfadda” are worth it … and it also has outdoor seating.
the town closes one of its streets to traffic for pedestrians only
food trucks and more activities for the whole family.
the last direct train back to Penn Station is 10:15pm
they run every hour with the 11:50pm as the last one back for the night.
It’s a day well-spent in the small town Millburn and it’s only a 45-minute train ride away.
