Exiting the NFL draft, the Cincinnati Bengals have high hopes that third-round pick Dylan Fairchild can come in and make some noise on the starting offensive line
they're hoping for a repeat of Amarius Mims last year
Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown agreed with this notion recently while chatting about what it's like to keep track of prospects such as Fairchild for three-plus years
"We've had a lot of success identifying some guys here recently from that program," Brown told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com "Last year
came right out of the same offensive line that Dylan was on
And Mims was an outstanding prospect for us and now it's great having him blocking for Joe Burrow at that right tackle position
When you look at the Georgia Bulldogs program
especially on the offense and defensive lines."

It certainly helps Fairchild's outlook that Mims came in and appeared to win a starting job last summer before a poorly-timed injury that cost him the start of the season
But the Bengals entered the offseason with needs at both guard spots
they added Lucas Patrick and brought back Cody Ford
two moves that seemed to suggest a Round 1 guard
the pressure goes on Fairchild to come in and compete with the mentioned names
He'll do so on a team that revamped the coaching staff and
hopes to better develop players than it has in the past

Head Coach Zac Taylor calls OT Amarius Mims to let him know he is a Cincinnati Bengal
A year ago today, Bengals right tackle Amarius Mims wondered if he had made the right choice by delving into the NFL Draft with just 803 snaps for the Georgia Bulldogs
What if his ankle injury and light experience drove him deep into the first round
made him wait another night for the second round
Mims' beaming face this week gave you the answer as he reported to Paycor Stadium for the start of offseason workouts
Now he's getting ready to fly back to Georgia for the Thursday night draft party of the man he played next to in Athens
Long before Mims took his 836th and last snap of his rookie year in a gut-check performance during a must-win game in Pittsburgh
It was draft night when the Saints made Oregon State's Taliese Fuaga the 14th pick and the fourth tackle chosen
Only he thought it was going to be where he ended the season
That's the team that had shown much of the interest
He had no idea the Bengals would take him at No
But he's glad they did. and so are they. During 13 starts, the massive Mims held his 6-8, 340-pound own against the AFC North werewolves Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt and drew praise from quarterback Joe Burrow all the way down
He showed the Steelers why they wanted him when he came off the bench in the finale to play 14 snaps with a broken hand and fended Watt off the stat sheet
Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin meets with the media ahead of the NFL Draft
"Now I'm just focused on being more of a pro
Those bumps and bruises at the beginning of the season
You've just go to be able to take care of your body."
It's not so much he played so few snaps at Georgia
It's that he didn't really have a chance to physically prepare for this last season in the whirlwind of the draft
New Bengals offensive line coach Scott Peters knows exactly what he's getting
When Peters coached the Patriots offensive line last spring
he also wondered about the big kid from Georgia who made only six starts
He'd like to have seen a larger body of work from a potential first-round pick
where he was surprised to discover Mims wouldn't participate
But Peters made the most of his visit and talked to Mims for an hour in the team room
where he was impressed with his grasp of the offense despite his limited snaps
I was really impressed with the character," Peters says
All that stuff helps make that projection … I think with Armarius it was pretty obvious this was a special talent."
Head coach Zac Taylor meets with the media at the start of offseason workouts and ahead of the NFL Draft
Mims just wishes he knew that a year ago today
He thinks three of his Georgia teammates are going in the first round on Thursday
Malaki Starks," says Mims of two edgers and a safety
"I hope one of them is going to be there at No
they'll take the rookie year by the guy who went No

Florida signee Jayden Horton-Mims ran a 45.24 400m to beat Quincy Wilson 👀 pic.twitter.com/Vf0QuvXeWB
While Jayden’s performance deserves every bit of the spotlight
the moment doesn’t come without reflection on what Quincy Wilson has done to elevate the standard
are now linked in the story of one of the most competitive 400m seasons in U.S
went head-to-head with national sensation Quincy Wilson and came out on top in one of the most electric 400-meter showdowns of the season
In a race that felt more like a championship final than a regular-season clash
Horton-Mims battled stride for stride with Wilson through the curve before surging ahead down the homestretch
Crossing the line in a personal best of 45.24 seconds
Horton-Mims didn’t just win—he dethroned the reigning U.S
resetting the national standard and proving he belongs in the same breath as one of the most celebrated young sprinters in the country
It wasn’t just the time that it was how it was run
Horton-Mims attacked the curve aggressively
gliding down the backstretch with smooth efficiency and transitioning into the final 150 meters like a seasoned pro
the race was about keeping the focus on his technique as Quincy Wilson was right on his tail
A post shared by MileSplit (@milesplit)
A new U.S. No. 1. A new chapter for the Nike Elite Athlete and former Imhotep Charter Panther
who is now competing for the Center of Education (NJ)
But what makes this moment special isn’t just that Jayden took the No
To understand the magnitude of Jayden Horton-Mims’ feat
you have to understand who Quincy Wilson is
Wilson has already amassed a résumé that most athletes dream of
He made Olympic history in Paris as the youngest male athlete to win gold in track and field since 1928
and the kind of athlete whose mere presence on a heat sheet causes everyone else to step up
Wilson torched a 45.13 indoor 400m—a national record—and followed it up with blistering relay legs that have become the stuff of legend
he anchored the Bullis School 4x400m to a national record at the Penn Relays
He’s already established himself as a once-in-a-generation talent
So when a performance comes along that surpasses Wilson’s
It raises the bar for everyone—including himself
elite-level competition pushing both athletes to greatness
And it’s a reflection of Wilson’s influence that Jayden Horton-Mims had to reach this level to even join the conversation
Let’s be clear: Quincy Wilson’s season is far from over
He still holds the fastest indoor mark ever by a high schooler and remains a favorite in every race he enters
and while Horton-Mims and Wilson aren’t in a direct rivalry in the traditional sense
their paths are now intertwined in the purest form of competitive excellence
but no athlete reaches their peak in isolation
Jayden’s surge is a direct response to the standard Wilson has set
And if you’ve watched Quincy Wilson race—even once—you know he thrives on being challenged
We’re now entering a stretch of the season where these two could very well meet on the track
Imagine two sub-45 second talents pushing each other down the homestretch with national and possibly world junior records in sight
we’ve seen the high school 400 meters slowly evolve
and now Horton-Mims who are redefining what’s possible at the high school level
but multiple athletes making it look routine as the top 7 in the US are below this mark
And what’s more—these guys aren’t just 400-meter specialists
Jayden Horton-Mims may have the title of U.S
1—for now—but Quincy Wilson has helped create the platform on which this title holds value
Horton-Mims will carry the weight of being the nation’s fastest into every meet
But with that comes the target on his back—and no one is better equipped to aim at that target than Wilson
Could we see a new national record before the season’s end
What we’re witnessing isn’t just fast times
It’s the emergence of a generation of sprinters who refuse to settle
but with Wilson in the picture—and others like Da'Mari Thomas
and Rodrick Pleasant looming—tomorrow is never guaranteed
Jayden Horton-Mims’ 45.24 is a milestone—a bold statement in an already blazing season
It’s a defining moment that will live in highlight reels and social feeds for years to come
But let’s not forget the foundation laid by Quincy Wilson
this isn’t a baton handoff but a relay in motion
And the next leg might be the fastest one yet

A Kent County judge shot down a motion for a mistrial Wednesday morning on the third day of the murder trial for former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr.
Schurr is facing a charge of second-degree murder for shooting Patrick Lyoya in the back of the head during a traffic stop on April 4
Jurors in the case had been told to expect up to two weeks of testimony
but the case appears to be moving more quickly than expected
as prosecutors rested their case on the trial’s third day
Immediately after Kent County prosecutor Christopher Becker told 17th Circuit Court judge Christina Mims he was resting his case
defense attorneys for Schurr asked for a brief break
attorney Mikayla Hamilton made a motion for a mistrial
“And we believe that the evidence presented prejudice the defendant to the extent that the fundamental goals of accuracy and fairness are threatened,” Hamilton told Mims
Hamilton said two of the experts that testified as experts on police use of force for the prosecution used standards that were not applicable to Michigan law
and they relied on information about tasers that were not related to the model of taser Schurr used in the traffic stop
“And at this point we believe that we’re too far along for the jury to simply strike the testimony because they have heard testimony from two of the People’s experts now that do not accurately - and are nowhere near based on what the law is in Michigan and what should be considered.”
Mims said she was prepared to rule on both motions immediately
I do not believe that the experts’ testimony rises to the level of requiring a mistrial,” Mims said
“I believe that they were testifying - they clearly were testifying on generally accepted police practices
they never held themselves out to be experts in Michigan law.”
Seth Stoughton and Nicholas Bloomfield reviewed video evidence and other records from the case to decide if Schurr acted in the traffic stop as a reasonable officer would
using what they called generally accepted police practices
Stoughton is a former Florida police officer and a law professor at the University of South Carolina who teaches on the use of force by police officers
Bloomfield is a former police officer who lives in Arizona and consults on police use of force
Both told jurors that Schurr made some accepted decisions during the traffic stop with Lyoya in 2022
but ultimately said no reasonable police officer using general police practices would have shot Lyoya when he was face down on his hands and knees
Mims said it wasn’t the role of expert witnesses to instruct jurors on Michigan law; that is her role in the case
“And it was the experts’ job to provide opinions based on - based on how they applied the facts in this case as they have been presented thus far to reliable principles and methods,” Mims said
and did not strike the testimony from the record
She also rejected the motion for a directed verdict
saying that prosecutors have “essentially three elements” to prove in the charge
and the death was intentionally caused by Schurr
The third element in the charge is that there is no justification for the killing
Lyoya appears to have possession of the defendant’s taser at the time that this shooting occurs,” Mims said
conceding a key point Schurr’s defense team has been making in court
“But it is also clear to the court that a rational trier of fact could find that the alleged victim in this case
was not in a position to use the taser at the time that the shot that killed him was fired.”
jurors re-entered the courtroom and Schurr’s attorneys called their first witness to continue the case
is a video forensics expert who examined multiple videos from the incident
One video he created showed a zoomed in view of Lyoya’s hands in the seconds before Schurr shot him
Schurr’s taser appears to be fully in Lyoya’s hand
and Lyoya passes it from his left hand to his right hand just before Schurr fires the bullet into the back of Lyoya’s head

In 2021 rookie drafts, former Tarheel running back Javonte Williams was taken comfortably in the first round
He had been the 35th overall pick of the NFL Draft by the Broncos and was arguably my favorite prospect in the class
and he rewarded believers with an RB17 fantasy finish as a rookie
he peaked as high as RB2 overall in dynasty community consensus ..
multi-ligament knee injury four weeks into the 2022 season
He was rushed back to action in the fall of 2023 and has not been the same in the two years since
with precipitous drops in his efficiency metrics across the board
Even still, Williams compiled 99 receptions over the last two years, and his 2.9 career receptions per game is top-15 at the position since 2021 (minimum 20 games). Now in Dallas on a one-year, prove-it deal, Williams sits atop a depth chart consisting of 28-year-old Miles Sanders and fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue
Williams should get the first crack at starter opportunity for the Cowboys offense in 2025
he might be the only back outside the top 40 in startup value (currently RB46) to have a legitimately clear shot at 250+ touches
Should he rediscover a modicum of his pre-injury juice — assuming there's any left — Williams could turn in another RB2 fantasy season as a key cog in Brian Schottenheimer's offense
and offensive coaches with a track record of pass-game success
the situation around Mims is primed for a breakout
Should he improve on his late-2024 pace and near or surpass 100 targets in 2025
Mims is an easy bet to crush his current WR63 valuation
Just before the NFL Draft, I published a piece on players to sell in dynasty, and concluded it with Packers tight end Tucker Kraft. Not because I don't think Kraft is talented. But because Luke Musgrave exists
Musgrave missed the majority of the 2024 season
and Kraft had a breakout year in his absence
But it's worth remembering that Musgrave was viewed as the better receiving prospect entering the league
that Green Bay drafted him a full round earlier in 2023 (42nd overall to Kraft's 78th)
and that prior to Musgrave's injury towards the end of the year
he was heavily outproducing Kraft in every relevant fantasy metric
I'm not suggesting you trade Kraft for Musgrave
or take the latter over the former in a startup draft
Kraft is sitting at TE11 in community consensus value
and Musgrave is all the way down at TE29 (rookies included)
If Musgrave can put together a healthy 2025
I see very few worlds in which he doesn't close that gap
And if things shift back towards the way they looked through the first three months of their careers
Musgrave could go from forgotten fantasy sleeper to legitimate TE2 faster than you can say Lambeau Leap
You can acquire the 24-year-old tight end for a piece of string cheese
I'd consider doing it before training camp

has shown promise as a return specialist and athlete
Bryant's unexpected rise—being picked earlier than anticipated—along with impressive college performance
raises questions about Mims' future and standing in the Broncos' offense
Head coach Sean Payton's history with drafting wide receivers adds weight to this competition
especially given Bryant's striking comparisons to Michael Thomas from 2016
As the Broncos prepare for the upcoming season
the coaching staff will likely evaluate how to integrate both Mims and Bryant effectively
The competition for wide receiver spots could lead to strategic adjustments in game plans as the roster solidifies
Denver's decision on wide receiver placements could drastically impact Mims' career trajectory
Mims might need to elevate his game or risk losing his role in the offense as the Broncos look to optimize their aerial attack

Kendall Mims Faces Additional Criminal Charge Related To Disposal Of Human Remains
Just six days after S.C. circuit court judge Jessica Salvini granted Kendall Mims
a $75,000 surety bond in Anderson County
she found herself in front of a judge in Pickens County facing a new charge
On April 16, 2025 — one day after her bond was posted — Mims was arrested and charged with destruction or removal of human remains under South Carolina code §16-17-600(A). The new charge adds a grim layer to the already disturbing allegations involving the death and disposal of the body of 20-year-old Jessica Barnes of Pendleton
Barnes was allegedly strangled to death by her husband, 22-year-old Brandon Barnes
Mims had been held without bond since her initial October arrest for accessory after the fact to murder, obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony. However, on April 10, 2025, judge Salvini granted her a surety bond with strict conditions including GPS monitoring and no contact with the victim’s family
Mims’ bond hearing was noteworthy thanks to the support she received from Jessica Barnes’ own mother, Cecilia Varvara, who told the court she supported the judge’s decision because she believed Mims was also a victim of Brandon Barnes
Mims’ attorney, Catherine Wyse of Clemson
echoed that sentiment during the dramatic hearing
detailing how her client endured physical abuse
and coercion at the hands of the accused killer
one day after her bond was posted in Anderson County
Mims finds herself back in custody — this time facing a felony charge in a new jurisdiction
Mims was arrested by agents of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and booked on April 16, 2025. She was granted a $25,000 surety bond the same day by Pickens County magistrate Charles James
and is scheduled for a first appearance on June 12
While no formal indictment has yet been filed in the new case, her inmate record at the Pickens County Detention Center indicates Mims is being held on behalf of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO)
FITSNews previously reported that Mims — along with 20-year-old Victoria Tippett — was accused of helping Brandon Barnes conceal his wife’s body after she was strangled in a pool house on a Pendleton property on August 2
The three are accused of burning her remains at a remote location near a boat ramp in Pickens County
While much of the original case narrative focused on Tippett’s alleged role in purchasing supplies used to clean up and dispose of the body
this new charge could indicate investigators now believe Mims also directly participated in the handling or disposal of Jessica’s remains
Mims is currently being held in the Pickens County Detention Center until her new bond is posted
she will remain free while both cases proceed through the legal system
co-defendant Victoria Tippett remains incarcerated after Judge Salvini denied her bond request on the original charges filed against her
citing concerns about her credibility and the potential risk she poses to the community
As the court continues to sift through the facts in this harrowing case
one thing is clear: the legal saga surrounding Jessica Barnes’ brutal murder is far from over — and the spotlight on those accused of covering up this crime is only growing brighter
Count on FITSNews to continue tracking developments in this emotionally charged case…

As I posted before liberal California native and California educated judge Salvini once again shows how wrong she is for this state
The best outcome for the citizens of this state would be for her to not be re-elected once her current term ends
@AC – What exactly is your issue with the judge from the prior bond hearing (who has absolutely nothing to do with this case)
What is the issue with a judge granting a bond to a defendant
It is required by the state and federal constitution
so I was wondering if you had some specific information that the judge’s decision was wrong
can you at least tell us why Judge Salvini is “wrong for this state?” Is there something specific about her birthplace and law school you could link to a specific instance you want to complain about
I know this blog and the misinformed citizens have made it trendy to attack the judiciary
Otherwise you look a little foolish ranting and raving about a judge without any substance to your complaint
Maybe you could get a gig with Will as a columnist

The abrupt dismissal of a Brooklyn superintendent is spurring fierce backlash in Bedford-Stuyvesant
where dozens of community members showed up to a town hall meeting Monday night to express their outrage
Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos removed District 16 Superintendent Brendan Mims on Monday
according to state Assembly member Stefani Zinerman
who spoke with Aviles-Ramos and organized Monday’s town hall
The exact reasons for the removal are unclear
But in a Monday letter to Aviles-Ramos recapping their recent discussions about Mims
Zinerman attributed the problems to a “breakdown in the relationship” between Mims and the local Community Education Council
according to a copy of the letter shared with Chalkbeat
former Deputy Superintendent Fabayo McIntosh
according to an email to principals obtained by Chalkbeat
The chancellor’s decision — and its timing over spring break — came as a shock to Zinerman and the dozens of educators
and community leaders who showed up to the hastily arranged Monday meeting in the basement of the Restoration Plaza community center
a 22-year veteran of the city Education Department
for his community engagement and strong academic track record
long enough to see the changes that have happened in District 16,” said Lena Gates
and one of several principals who showed up at the town hall to support Mims
‘We finally got it right…’ I’m really so upset to hear what’s happening.”
Attendees said the timing of the move also seemed like an effort to sneak it through without notice
whose assembly district largely overlaps with District 16
and I have not had the opportunity to chain myself to a door yet
This is the door that I’m going to chain myself to.”
Zinerman added that making the decision toward the end of the school year as students prepare to take state exams and at a moment of profound uncertainty for city schools because of federal threats to education could destabilize the district
Education Department spokesperson Nicole Brownstein said the “superintendency is an appointed position and an at-will hire” who serves at the pleasure of the chancellor. She said the agency will follow the chancellor’s regulations governing the appointment of a new permanent superintendent
which include consulting with the CEC and educators unions
In the email to principals announcing the change
Deputy Chancellor of School Leadership Danika Rux praised McIntosh as a “seasoned educator” and “proud product of District 16.”
“We extend thanks to Brendan for his service to District 16,” Rux added
Mims couldn’t be reached for comment. NeQuan McLean, the long-time president of CEC 16, who recently appeared on stage with Aviles-Ramos to announce a new program for parent volunteers
and other members of the CEC didn’t respond to emails
Banks hired Mims in 2022 as part of a sweeping shakeup of the city’s 45 superintendent positions. The effort was intended to vest the role of superintendent with additional responsibility, especially in carrying out Banks’ literacy curriculum overhaul
and to give communities more input in the selection of their district leaders
That community input is especially important in District 16 — the neighborhood that helped birth the community control movement in the 1960s where Black and Puerto Rican community members established the Ocean Hill-Brownsville district that eventually sparked the 1968 teacher strike
That history echoed through Monday night’s meeting
and we make the decisions with regards to who is leading
specifically with our children,” said Marlon Rice
Despite its storied history, District 16 has faced steep challenges in recent decades, including enrollment losses stemming from population declines, particularly among Black families
in central Brooklyn and the proliferation of charter schools

People who attended Monday’s meeting pointed to Mims’ leadership as a bright spot amid those challenges
pushing the district forward academically while bringing the community on board
The district’s proficiency rates on state English exams for grades 3-8 rose from 37% in 2022 to 44% last year
and from 25% to 44% in math for the same grades — larger than the city’s overall growth in both cases
Mims also played a big role in bringing a new Black Studies curriculum to the district
Leaders of nonprofits and local businesses said Mims was unusually active in getting them involved
and one district father spoke glowingly about an informal group of dads Mims led
never had no one come out and say let’s meet and greet
we’re doing something special for the dads,” said Jason Smith
“He was always concerned with how can we improve… this is something that’s hitting hard.”
Zinerman said she started getting wind last year of tension between Mims and the local CEC — and said there has been a pattern over more than a decade of superintendents only lasting a few years in the district because of “political or interpersonal conflict.”
“What began as enthusiastic support — heralding Mr
Mims as ‘exactly the man we need’ — has devolved into mistrust,” Zinerman wrote in her Monday letter to Aviles-Ramos
Zinerman said she met with Aviles-Ramos and several of her top deputies last Wednesday to discuss the situation and urged the city to appoint an independent mediator to resolve the dispute between Mims and the CEC
Zinerman said she thought department officials were on the same page and was shocked to get a call around noon on Monday from Aviles-Ramos telling her that Mims was out and his replacement would start the next day
“What they want to do is send this Black man to the suspension center, where all the Black boys go,” said Barry Cooper, a community leader who runs a program supporting boys of color
Cooper pledged to continue organizing protests throughout this week
with town hall attendees committing to calling Mayor Adams
and rallying at the Education Department headquarters in Manhattan
“This is a precipice for us to take control of our community and be a beacon like Bed-Stuy has always been,” Cooper said

But now, he's found one of those rare jobs he can really establish his name by leading back to prominence - the Puyallup Vikings
was officially announced Wednesday afternoon as the Vikings' new coach
who stepped down in March after four seasons
If there was a list going on around noting the most coveted coaching jobs in the state
It has tradition - the Vikings just reached the Class 4A playoffs last fall for the 19th time
And it has produced some of biggest names this state has seen
notably at quarterback with Billy Joe Hobert and the three Huard brothers (Damon
you know what the cream-of-the-crop jobs are," Mims said
"You know the tradition of Puyallup football
"This job was always circled and highly-coveted."
A 2011 Franklin Pierce High School graduate
decided to team up with his quarterback-playing brother and go play at Malone University
a now-defunct NCAA Division II program that played in the beastly Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)
Because of his insatiable desire to learn football schemes
Mims quickly jumped into the South Sound coaching scene
first as a wide receiver and defensive backs coach at Foss High School (2014-17)
then jumping to his alma mater for four seasons overseeing receivers with the Cardinals (2017-19)
always going to clinics," Franklin Pierce coach Trevor Hanson said
"He has a good understanding of (pass-game) spacing
and now he's really added some tempo to get the ball out."
That has largely been his trademark in guiding Life Christian Academy (2021) and Mercer Island (2022-25) - offenses that can quickly move the ball through the air
which went 10-1 and advanced to the Class 3A playoffs for the first time since 2017
he had the one of the classification's top passers (Youngmin Lee) and wide receivers (Elan Gotel)
The Islanders averaged 267.0 passing yards per game in 2024
"It is something the league (4A SPSL) will have to prepare for," Mims said
Mims said he also understands the higher level of expectations this Puyallup position carries - on the field with a talented group of returners
but also off the field with a large group of boosters and an administration that wants to get back to returning to a championship level
And he's ready to put in that necessary effort to accomplish those goals
"I would say my hard work comes from my mom (Maria Buze) and dad (Greg Buze)," Mims said
"I've never shied away from a challenge or been content (working) where I am at."

From the day he showed up until the final game, the Bengals were thrilled with right tackle Amarius Mims
The rookie played as big as his draft day selection of 18th in the first round and his NFL scouting combine measurements of 6-8
And Orlando Brown Jr.
went even bigger this week as the offseason began when he uttered the extra-large words of "All Pro."
we're having two All-Pro tackles here in the future,' Brown said
He came in with an extremely positive attitude and he only got better
I think that's what you're going to continue to see through his career
Continuing to get better and to work hard."
Brown knows how hard those first-team All-Pros are
Mims left for a vacation saying his goal is the Pro Bowl next year and that it won't be long before he returns to Dallas to work with offensive line guru Duke Manyweather
"From year one to year two needs to be the biggest jump
His biggest jump of his rookie year may have come during last Saturday night's finale in Pittsburgh
It was almost a full-circle moment given how his season began on draft night when former Alabama coach Nick Saban
Mims missed most of last season at Georgia with an ankle injury that required surgery and when he returned to play in the SEC title game
he re-injured it and missed the Orange Bowl
"He played only the first 15 plays of the game and then he's out
Takes himself out," Saban said of the SEC title game
"You've got to be a little bit more consistent in your performance if you're going to be a great player and a starter in the National Football League."
Mims showed all of that when he came off the bench Saturday to play 14 snaps with a broken hand when his backup
Most of Mims' plays came in a series that straddled the third and fourth quarters and consumed 11 plays and 8:31 before ending in a field goal
I'm proud of him going in there and delivering," said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor postgame
Mims got help from tight end Drew Sample against Steelers sackmaster T.J
Watt on some of those snaps and on some he didn't
teamed with Mims for a remarkable combined no-hitter
who came in with 14 sacks in 14 games against the Bengals with 53 tackles
seven passes defensed and six forced fumbles
"We knew going into that game Cody was the best option," Mims said
I felt like Orlando and Cody did a great job
You've always got to be ready no matter what
Mims is putting a Pro Bowl in his sights for next season while putting his rookie year in the rearview mirror
"I don't put a good or a bad on my rookie year
I just put there's a lot I need to fix and I'll continue to fix."
Kicker Evan McPherson
the Bengals all-time leading postseason scorer
didn't get a shot to expand his total when the Broncos eliminated the Bengals from the playoffs
who missed the last five games with a groin injury
was optimistic about being able to go if they had made Sunday's Wild Card Game in Buffalo
"I was going to test it and see how my body felt
I was optimistic," McPherson said this week
McPherson has been canvassing veteran kickers who have been in the league a long time and have overcome a similar injury
and make sure everything re-connects itself back to 100 percent and go from there," McPherson said of the advice
"I'm trying to understand ways to fix it and prevent it
and better understand my body a little bit more
and going through this is going to help me a lot."
heads into his fifth NFL season thinking as much about his physical regimen as he is his kicking after his career-low 72.7% field-goal percentage
He says he's going to get in better shape and keep seeking out veterans
"I like to think my body can take anything
I'm going to figure out ways to protect my body from injury
It's happened three out of four years and this year was the worst
I'm going to talk to guys who have had similar injuries
The Bengals signed Cade York to replace McPherson, and it gave York the chance to keep his winning streak alive with college teammates Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase
They have yet to lose with York as their kicker
He was LSU's kicker for the 15-0 national champs and York never lost a game as McPherson's replacement in the five-game winning streak to end the season ..
Running back Chase Brown (ankle) said he was definitely playing in Buffalo even though he tried to go in warmups but couldn't play in Pittsburgh
I did literally everything possible to put myself in position to play," Brown said this week
it didn't feel good enough to play in an NFL game
To go out there injured and not being fully confident in my ability
it's a selfish thing if I were to go out there."
But he felt better about Sunday's Wild Card he'll have to watch
"I wouldn't have missed that game," Brown said
No one had to tell Brown he was ten yards away from his first 1,000-yard season

January 25th surrounded by the people he held most dear
his mother Ruth Mims passed away shortly before on January 20th while also in hospice
Jerry battled with Neck cancer from 2021 until his peaceful passing while in the care of his Son and Daughter in Law in their home while undergoing hospice care
He will be remembered by his love of all things sports
he will be remembered as a father who was always gracious
and who always pushed me to never settle for anything less than achievable.
he would be found on the golf course with one of his many beloved friends or with his son (probably also on the golf course)
Every conversation with my father would eventually end up on the topic of whatever sport he was currently watching on TV at the time of the discussion
many of those Relationships lasting for over 40 years
He was loved by not only his friends but the neighborhood he serviced for many years while at the postal service
He was always quick to boast about how many personalized cards and letters he got from the families on his route
one would be hard pressed to find days where my father would miss work
My father loved what he did (even if he complained about it sometimes) and loved the relationships he made while at the post office even more
Jerry was an amazing father to not only me
but to all my friends that came as a package deal with me every weekend while staying with my father
He always opened up his home and his heart to anyone I loved or considered a friend
he showed me 5 lifetime's worth of love
and he will be so dearly missed by not only me
but every person fortunate enough to call him a friend
My father will be cremated and I will be taking his ashes for one more tee time at Okeeheelee Golf course where he played every Sunday for many years
He did not wish to have a funeral or celebration of life
but I will be celebrating my father every day for the love and kindness he showed me and his friends
Now for one of those rare things that is as advertised
Since first-round pick Amarius Mims was pressed into the starting lineup during the Monday night game in the third week of the season at Paycor Stadium against Washington
he has been pretty much primetime at right tackle
How about not allowing a sack on a true drop-back pass
Overall the Bengals are more than delighted with a guy who turned 22 the day after his third NFL start and has already played almost as much ball this season than his entire career at Georgia
GH: This year you've gone against Myles Garrett
three of the most feared pass rushers in the league
I think the folks here believe you got out of that gauntlet without giving up a sack
Pro Football Focus has you giving up one Monday night
but I don't think you got charged with it in your building
There are some things I could have done better technique-wise and all that good stuff
Like I said when you interviewed me the last time before the (Steelers) game
GH: I wrote what you said and I saw some fake headline somewhere that said something like
"Bengals rookie disses Steelers star." Couldn't have been further from the truth
AM: I gave him his props before the game and after
'See you Week 17.' We've got another game to play
man.' I had never talked to him before until after that game
It's great going against opponents like him
GH: Did Garrett or Parsons say anything to you after those games
GH: You didn't say anything during the game
after getting them back-to-back the last two weeks
AM: They're all great players in their own way
He'll have his share of wins and I'll have my share of wins
It's a matter of who has the most wins and who comes out on top at the end
GH: There was one play where Parsons went unblocked and Joe still unloaded for a 13-yarder to tight end Mike Gesicki
and the thing they love about you is you don't play and act like a rookie
Just being in the situation where I had to come in
I ended up filling his role as the starter
You have to have the attitude of a starter
whether you're a rookie or whether you're not
I had a good guy to watch in Trent being a guy who won a Super Bowl
is you don't get down if something goes wrong
AM: I feel like I learned that my sophomore year in college and I saw what happens when it sticks with you throughout the game
I just remember my coach talking about dropping it and going into the next play
GH: Is there a play you'd like to have back in this two-game stretch
GH: Your first and only NFL holding penalty
You're in a long line of guys who have held Micah Parsons
so just get off the ball on whatever we had going on
I didn't know that until Orlando (Brown Jr.) was telling me on the sideline
AM: Staying rooted with the lower body and just punching
Whether it's independent or two-hand punches or clamps
It's really both upper body and lower body
GH: Has the inside move given you problems
AM: I had a couple of snaps earlier in my debut when I got beat inside
GH: It seems like you never give up anything outside
I feel like I'm athletic enough to at least catch up and wash past the quarterback if something bad happens
GH: Anything you've learned from these last two games
GH: You're basically telling me you don't do much after work and you're in bed sleeping by ten
What has this rookie year been like for you
I don't like too many distractions with a lot of people
GH: Have you had any conversations with Bengals Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz
AM: We had an O-line dinner a minute ago and he was there with a couple of other (former Bengals O-linemen) and I had a good convo with him
But go out hard and get better every day and …
I feel like as long as I keep getting better every step
GH: You ever talk to the greatest right tackle in Bengals history
Mainly with those guys I always talk about staying healthy
Especially because I had an ankle last year and I needed surgery
GH: You ever watch tape of this generation of right tackles
I watched all the Lane Johnsons and the Penei Sewells and the Laremy Tunsils and stuff
Because it doesn't get any better than those guys
it's just looking at the mistakes and correcting them

finds open space on a 61-yard punt return vs
DENVER — When Rigoberto Sanchez's fourth-quarter punt dropped out of the sky and settled in Marvin Mims Jr.'s arms
In a critical matchup in the AFC wild-card race
Denver trailed the Colts through the first three quarters and faced a deficit since the opening drive of the game
Mims was about to do his part to change that
The Pro Bowl returner caught the ball at his own 24-yard line and escaped an initial tackle attempt from Colts cornerback Chris Lammons
He then worked his way diagonally across the field before he turned the corner just before the Denver 40-yard line
Mims dodged a Sanchez tackle attempt at the Indianapolis 40-yard line and cut back from the sideline at the 30-yard line before finally being dragged down at the 15-yard line
tight end Nate Adkins was in the end zone to secure a lead that the Broncos would not relinquish en route to a 21-point fourth quarter and a 31-13 win over the Colts
"Dude is a playmaker," defensive end John Franklin-Myers said
All Mims did was to change the game and give Denver's offense — which had struggled to maintain drives and score points — another crucial opportunity
Mims posted a 27-yard return to the Indianapolis 39-yard line earlier in the second half
but Colts cornerback Nick Cross undercut quarterback Bo Nix's third-down pass to Courtland Sutton to thwart the drive
Mims also recorded a 9-yard return that was aided by an unnecessary roughness call for a late hit
but anybody that's tapped into the game and really watches it and wants to understand what's going on in the game will understand him doing that," Sutton said of Mims
And even though the Broncos' offense didn't score points on those drives
the returns did help flip the field and keep the action on Indianapolis' end of the field
Following the Denver Broncos' 31-13 win vs
the Indianapolis Colts at Empower Field at Mile High
lead writer Aric DiLalla and team reporter Elisa Hernandez break down the Broncos' key plays on defense
paled in comparison to the dynamic 61-yard return that set up the go-ahead score from Nix to Adkins
"He's an exciting guy with the ball in his hands," Sutton said
"and watching him go down the sidelines a couple times today
it's exciting because at any moment you know that he could take it to the crib
We were kind of struggling moving the ball consistently and for him to go and get us those hidden yards and for us to be able to capitalize on them is huge."
Mims admitted his returns rely on "a lot of instinct" and that he often takes a punt return in a different direction than the scheduled call
he directed linebacker Drew Sanders to block a specific Colts defender as he turned the corner and raced toward the red zone
we know how good we are and how we're at the top of the league at it
and we have a lot of confidence in that unit," Mims said
they clean it up a lot for me to make a play."
And at a time in the game where the Broncos had just three first downs over their last seven drives
Mims made a game-changing — and potentially season-changing — play

That gave us a spark tonight and we needed it
Our defense and special teams gave us a lot of help
Marvin had two or three returns that really changed the game."

I was recently invited to view the work of fellow artist Michael Ellison
to offer my perspective as a printmaker and arts educator with a similar artistic background
Both Ellison and I have engaged extensively in color reduction relief printing
affording me a deep familiarity with the intricacies of this process
Ellison was also an educator with a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking
despite my ability to interpret and articulate the content and technical aspects of his printmaking
I feel that words alone cannot fully capture its brilliance; his work truly needs to be experienced firsthand to be fully appreciated
Observing Michael Ellison’s printmaking is akin to attending a masterclass in both the technical and conceptual realms of the art form
His creations are mesmerizing—visually captivating and technically masterful
They immediately draw viewers into harmonious cultural narratives
reflecting profound cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of formalism
Ellison adeptly applies these principles to dynamic
intuitive compositions of figures and backgrounds
and urban street life—characterized by elongated figures and distorted imagery—echo the works of artists influenced by Cubism and their social environments
such as Jacob Lawrence and Archibald Motley
I was reminded of Jacob Lawrence’s series of 15 serigraphs depicting the life of Haitian general Toussaint Louverture
Ellison credited African American artist Wilmer Jennings as a significant influence
evident in their shared subject matter—church gatherings
and bustling scenes with distorted perspectives
He also drew inspiration from French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
known for his depictions of nightlife and bar scenes
the body of work Ellison produced in his brief 48 years establishes him as a formidable master printmaker in his own right
Many of Ellison’s works are reductive color prints utilizing relief techniques such as woodcut and linocut; he was also a skilled lithographer
Reduction printing involves creating a multi colored image from a single relief block
The artist begins by drawing the image on the block and prints one color at a time
carving away portions of the surface between each printing run
Ellison’s unique approach involved layering colors to achieve a rich
is a planographic printmaking process where the image is printed from a flat surface
This technique is particularly challenging due to its complex chemistry
The process starts with the artist drawing the image onto the surface using a greasy crayon
The surface is then treated with chemicals to set the image and make the non image areas water-repellent
allowing the image to be transferred onto paper
Notable examples of Ellison’s work include the color reduction woodcut prints is a masterful depiction of church culture within the Black community
capturing a congregation deeply engaged in worship
the figures appear in motion against a distorted
angular perspective beneath a towering cathedral ceiling
focusing the viewer’s attention on the activity below
This piece exemplifies Ellison’s skillful use of design elements to create dynamic compositions that immerse the viewer
There is a clear connection to Wilmer Jennings’ influence
especially his work titled De Good Book Says (circa 1935)
which portrays a similar crowded church scene with stained glass windows and a dynamic congregation
Barflys explores a different aspect of social interaction
depicting bar patrons in a setting characterized by asymmetrical perspective and a semi-neutral color palette
The rich surface texture enhances its depth and atmosphere
While the figures are abstracted and distorted
Through meticulous placement and attention to details such as hairstyles and accessories
Ellison imbues his subjects with personality and relatability
rendering the scene both stylized and authentic
This work also reflects the influence of Toulouse-Lautrec’s painting At the Moulin Rouge
which features a similar semi-neutral palette and asymmetrical arrangement of patrons with non-local color on their faces
In reflecting on Michael Ellison’s own artistic legacy
it is very evident that his work transcends mere visual representation
offering profound insights into the African American experience
particularly color reduction relief printing
allowed him to craft narratives that demonstrate rich cultural significance and technical prowess
Ellison’s ability to draw inspiration from artists like Wilmer Jennings and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
while infusing his unique perspective has resulted in a body of work that is both historically rooted and innovatively distinct
not only showcase his technical skill but also his deep commitment to portraying the vibrancy and complexity of urban life
Ellison’s contributions have undoubtedly solidified his place as a significant figure in the history of American printmaking
leaving an indelible mark that will undoubtedly continue to inspire and educate future generations

Mims was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following Denver's Week 15 win over the Colts
the second-highest total by an NFL player in a game this season
The 97 yards are also the most by a Bronco in a single game since Trindon Holliday
"[Mim's] day was fantastic," Head Coach Sean Payton said Tuesday
"One of the keys to victory [was that] they were pretty good with their net punt
One of the keys in the kicking game was win the net punt battle
Mims' longest return of the day came at a critical moment in the fourth quarter
Mims returned a punt 61 yards to set up Denver's offense at the Colts' 15-yard line
The return — which was the longest by a Bronco since Diontae Spencer's 83-yard return in 2020 — ultimately led to a Denver touchdown and a lead the team would never relinquish
The Oklahoma product's other two returns also set up a pair of Broncos drives at the Indianapolis 39-yard line and Denver 48-yard line
This marks the second AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor of Mims' career

Mims — who was named a Pro Bowler and 2024 AP first-team All-Pro — earned the honor after leading the NFL in punt-return yardage (15.7 yards per return) in 2024
Mims contributed several game-altering returns throughout the season
