NY — A Queens man was sentenced on Thursday to up to 13 1/2 years in prison for a high-speed
marijuana-fueled crash on the Southern State Parkway in 2022 that killed three people
three counts of second-degree manslaughter
second-degree assault and driving while ability impaired by drugs
“Three young lives were stolen because of Matthew Whyte’s reckless decision to drive high on the notoriously treacherous Southern State Parkway,” Donnelly said
"Driving is a privilege and a responsibility
you are putting your life and the lives of other motorists at risk
18-year-old Ciara Hare was driving her 2004 Honda Civic eastbound on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 32 (Route 110
Broadway) with passengers 18-year-old Florence Oprisan and 22-year-old Jean Marc Miller
Whyte was driving his 2018 Subaru WRX in the same direction near the exit
weaving in and out of lanes of traffic and while impaired by marijuana
An unidentified individual in a third vehicle was also speeding
forcing the vehicle off the roadway and into a traffic camera pole on the right shoulder of the parkway
and landed in the wooded shoulder of the parkway a short distance away
According to the event data recorder from Whyte’s vehicle
he was driving approximately 93 miles per hour five seconds before he struck the victims’ vehicle
Blood taken from the defendant at the hospital revealed Whyte had marijuana in his system four hours after the crash
"Today’s sentence will never undo the pain this defendant has caused Ciara
But it should serve as a warning and a reminder for anyone driving on our roadways," Donnelly said

Fred Klauck of Mineola throws to the plate during a Nassau baseball game against Floral Park on Friday
Mineola sophomore lefthander Fred Klauck was not thrilled with how his first varsity start went in a loss to Wantagh last week
“First start didn't go too well," Klauck said
"Pitches weren't going where I wanted
Klauck allowed only three hits and one unearned run in six innings
striking out 11 and walking three to propel visiting Mineola to a 4-1 win over Floral Park in a Nassau Conference A-I baseball game on Friday at Alva T
and the first one wasn't so memorable,” Mineola coach Helms Bohringer said
so it shows that he's got a little work
mature thing to ask for… We worked on a couple things
“The fastball was just working today,” Klauck added
Said junior shortstop Ryan Valente: “His fastball
Joey Dunlop struck out the side in order in the seventh inning for the save
3-3) gave him a three-run cushion to work with in the first inning
Valente and Jayden Sleeper had RBI singles and Jesse Kostulias had an RBI triple
The Mustangs added their fourth run in the second inning on another RBI single by Valente
what can I say?” Klauck said of the early run support
Floral Park junior righthander David Cabrera — pitching to his twin brother
catcher Sebastian Cabrera — settled in nicely for and tossed six innings
He overcame runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth
Friday's victory handed Mineola a three-game sweep over the Knights (2-5
now you have to take that opportunity and get that third win because you never know at the end of the season — with tiebreakers and wins and points — how many wins you’re going to need to be a playoff team
which we hope to be by the end of the season.”

John Lutheran Church is hosting an important fundraiser for their congregation
when they host their German Heritage diner
which year in and year out tends to be a great turn out for the Mineola community church
To discuss the fundraiser and get the word out on the event
"We have been doing this since 1983 when we celebrated our 100th year anniversary of our congregation
and we have been doing it every year since
so I think this is our 41st year," Carnahan said
as this event continues to be significant for this congregation
from Clarinda to as far north as Schleswig," said Carnahan
"On Monday night we will cut up 1,300 pounds of pork shoulder roast
and that meat is seasoned with the a Shoning secret seasoning then it is ground up."
the German Heritage diner will be at the St
John Lutheran Church in Mineola on Saturday
and it takes numerous people to pull off this fun
The menu will be featuring homemade sausage (mettwurst)
We see old friends and new friends from all over the area
and it is just a fun experience," said Carnahan
Raw sausage links are available for sale with a limit of five per person
Handicap parking will be available at the south side of the church with additional parking on the north side

Photo of an office building 125 3rd Street
that will be demolished and turned into a housing complex.
The Nassau County Industrial Development Agency has granted tax breaks for a trio of planned housing developments totaling 592 units near the Mineola train station
The $354 million investment from Lake Success based-developer Kevin Lalezarian will help revitalize a “very depressed area of the village,” Mayor Paul Pereira said
and continue the village’s push to bolster its housing stock
“In addition to growing the tax base as a result of maximizing these underutilized properties
the 592 new units will be great for local merchants and taxing jurisdictions,” Sheldon Shrenkel
“Given each of their proximity to the Mineola train station and Roosevelt Field shopping mall
these projects are a welcomed addition to Nassau County and we are looking forward to them getting off the ground.”
In February, Mineola was certified as a “pro-housing” community by the state
a designation given to municipalities that have demonstrated a commitment to increasing housing options
It has built more than 1,100 multifamily apartment units over the past 12 years
bringing the village total to at least 3,000
“These units have consistently been rented out,” Pereira said
“These buildings are full with either young professionals or empty nesters
People that are a value added to the village.”
The new buildings will be located at 120 Third St.
all of which in the evening become poorly lit “ghost towns,” Pereira said
19 approved a 25-year tax incentive package for all three
which will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom units
“It brings new life into these traditionally
The IDA package includes a sales tax exemption of up to $1,598,557.50
with a mortgage tax exemption of up to $315,000
A portion of that land will be acquired as part of a land swap with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority
according to an IDA cover letter written by Daniel Deegan
The two buildings on Third Street will have 250 units each
The IDA granted each a mortgage tax exemption of $990,000
location was also awarded a sales tax exemption of up to $5,153,783
An unused parking garage and an old office building will be demolished to make room for the buildings
The developer will also build a park adjacent to the Second Street development
The tax rate will increase 2% each year starting after the first year for all three projects
This is not the first time the developer has won tax breaks for a Mineola property. In 2015, Lalezarian won approval for a planned 266-unit development on Second Street
"We believe these projects will further enhance the Mineola downtown success story by removing blighted
outdated structures to add much needed housing," Lalezarian said in a statement

known as "Baby Doe." (Nassau County Police Department)MINEOLA
NY — After years of questions as the Gilgo Beach investigation unfolded
The woman was identified as Tanya Denise Jackson
and her young child was named Tatiana Marie Dykes
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said at a Wednesday news conference
The pair have been considered to be possible Gilgo Beach victims
but officials said they are not discounting the possibility that the slayings may have been committed by someone else
A $25,000 Crime Stoppers reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person responsible for the slayings of Tanya and her child
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said
“Knowing the identities of the mom and the little baby is just a first step to help us get to solving these murders.”
which featured a heart-shaped peach with a bite mark tattooed above her left breast
was found in a green Rubbermaid bin in 1997 in Hempstead Lake State Park
The woman came to be known as "Peaches" for that unique tattoo
her arms and legs were found on Ocean Parkway
On April 4, 2011, the skeletal remains of the female toddler were discovered along Ocean Parkway; the two-year-old daughter was reportedly found wrapped in a blanket and wearing a gold bracelet and hoop earrings similar to the jewelry found with her mother
“Agents and detectives subsequently interviewed family members and obtained DNA samples to confirm the identities through our Nassau County crime lab,” Steven Fitzpatrick
commanding officer of the Nassau's police homicide squad
Jackson served in the United States Army for two years
adding that she was living in Brooklyn at the time of her death
charged in the deaths of seven Gilgo Beach victims
has not been charged in the deaths of Jackson or her daughter
A total of 11 sets of remains were found in the Gilgo Beach slayings
The remains included that of an Asian male
Last June, Heuermann was slapped with new second-degree murder charges in the deaths of two additional women, Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. In December, Heuermann was charged with the death of a seventh victim
"Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has refrained from making any comments about Rex Heuermann and any topics even tangentially involved to the investigation
pending completion of the ongoing pre-trial hearing
DA Tierney will resume speaking with the media," a representative of his office said
a conference was held in court to determine the future dates for the Frye hearing
held so that the judge can determine the admissibility of key DNA evidence in the case
Karen Vergata
whose legs were first found by beachcombers — a doctor and his brother — in a bag along the shore of Davis Park on Fire Island in 1996
has also been thought to possibly be linked to the Gilgo Beach murders
Her skull was later found on Ocean Parkway in 2011
Vergata, or Jane Doe #7, was identified in 2023 around the time of Heurmann's arrest
In October 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was pursuing a new lead in Alabama, the Mobile Police Department said in a Facebook post.
then-Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said FBI "investigators were following a lead" in Mobile
the Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport helped the Gulf War veteran's family with her remains and those of her daughter
and the pair made their final journey home to Alabama
where they were buried together and given full military honors
Jackson was buried in Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort
according to records from the Veterans Administration
which allows dependent children to be buried with a member of the military
In a poignant photo released by investigators
her family can be seen seated for the graveside presentation of the American flag from a veteran on bent knees
as her one hand tightly grasps the fabric folded into a triangle
It was one that investigators hope brings some closure as they continue searching for leads in the case
“I hope today’s announcement brings a sense of peace to their family and loved ones,” said Christopher Raia
