NC — Parents of a preschool in Mint Hill are spending their spring break looking for childcare after finding out their kids school will have to leave their current location by mid-June
It appears the Blair Road School and the Blair Road United Methodist Church have come to a fork in the road
the church and school decided to end their current lease
“Right before our spring break was starting
wondering how I was going to make plans for summer and fall if we weren’t able to reach a resolution,” explained Lauren Blackshaw
Parents Blackshaw and Meredith Carpenter are now spending looking for other options
Blair Road School is a pre-school that also offers after school programs for dozens of families in the area
“Blair Road preschool not only serve the preschool community
but also students across Mint Hill and Matthews because students who are ordinarily in our K-5 school system come here for full day,” said Carpenter
The school’s director sent out a letter to parents last Friday saying the relationship between the school and church deteriorated and the church was willing to allow the school
which has been there for more than 40 years
to stay one more year by agreeing to an increase in rent from $500 to $5,000
A statement on the church’s website
states the school was originally created to maintain a collaborative relationship with the church which includes reflecting it’s mission and values
Writing the school no longer maintain that close relationship
Both the church and school declined to be interviewed
Rick Schilling with Blair Road UMC gave WCCB this statement:
“The Church remains steadfast in our commitment to serve and support our community with integrity and care
the School no longer maintains that close and collaborative relationship
and we are deeply saddened that the connection has deteriorated
The Church’s legal counsel has attempted to resolve the matter in full with the attorney for the School
these attempts have not been met with meaningful or substantive engagement
An attorney for Blair Road School’s gave WCCB this statement:
” As you likely have seen shared among social media posts and email blasts from Blair Road UMC (“UMC”)
a conflict has arisen between BRS and UMC that has sparked public discourse regarding payment sought by UMC from BRS
a conflict between a Landlord and its Tenant
BRS is actively seeking an alternative location for its daily operations so it can continue to provide daycare
and summer school options for its many wonderful families
started a GoFundMe campaign with the best intentions to help BRS through these times
Heimbach and BRS thanks everyone for their outpouring of love and support and hopes to continue providing services for years to come.”
MINT HILL, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A daycare that has been around for decades has been given notice to leave a church campus in Mint Hill
Blair Road School has been like a second home to Lauren Blackshaw’s 3-year-old daughter.
“This school’s a big part of the community
it’s been around for 40 years,” said Blackshaw.
But now the daycare and after-school program it runs are at a crossroads.
I think all parents like to have a plan,” said Blackshaw.
the school rented its building from the church next door
The church shared a letter with Queen City News
telling the school to vacate the property by June 13.
The church claims its lease with the school ended in 2023
but they’ve allowed the school to stay in good faith
while repeatedly trying to renegotiate the lease.
The church also claims the school won’t pay its fair share of expenses for utilities and janitorial services.
the school claimed the church tried to up its rent by 900 percent.
Now parents like Blackshaw are left paying the price
“Very anxiety-inducing to try to figure out what’s going to happen next,” said Blackshaw.’
The school says it does not want to close and hopes to be able to find another location.
The school’s attorney sent QCN the following statement Wednesday evening:
“As you likely have seen shared among social media posts and email blasts from Blair Road UMC (“UMC”)
Heimbach and BRS thanks everyone for their outpouring of love and support and hopes to continue providing services for years to come.”
The church sent QCN a statement Wednesday:
The Church remains steadfast in our commitment to serve and support our community with integrity and care.
Blair Road School is an independent legal entity from the Church
the School was established to maintain a close and collaborative relationship with the Church
This included having church leadership represented on the School’s Board of Directors
following shared bylaws agreed upon by both parties
and operating in a way that reflects the mission and values of the Church.
these attempts have not been met with meaningful or substantive engagement.
Please refer to the attached letter from our attorney for more details regarding the current situation
Given that our attorney continues to uncover significant and pertinent information
we continue to examine every avenue available to ensure the welfare of the children
and church are honored and protected.

Former president Donald Trump will hold a campaign rally in Mint Hill this Wednesday
as polls continue to show the presidential race in the North Carolina sitting on a razor's edge
The campaign event will take place at Mosack Group, a local manufacturing plant at 11210 Allen Station Dr., where Trump is expected to talk about American production, according to a campaign news release. The campaign is offering tickets to people who register online
Trump's visit comes after he held a rally in Wilmington, N.C. on Saturday, where he made no mention of the Republican candidate for North Carolina governor, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson. On Thursday, Robinson's campaign was rocked by a lengthy CNN report that linked him to dozens of racist
lewd and inflammatory comments made on a porn website between 2008 and 2012
Robinson wrote on the website Nude Africa that he was a "black NAZI," enjoyed transgender pornography and spied on women in public gym showers as a 14-year-old
CNN also reported that he disparaged Martin Luther King Jr
as "Martin Lucifer Koon" and wrote "slavery is not bad
Robinson did not appear at the Wilmington rally with Trump. On Sunday, his campaign announced the departures of four senior staffers
deputy campaign manager and finance manager
Only three people remained on his campaign — two communication staffers and a director of security
Trump's visit comes as polls continue to show him facing an extremely close race in North Carolina against Vice President Kamala Harris. A poll by The New York Times and Sienna College released on Monday showed him leading Harris by roughly 3 points in the state — a slim lead within the margin of error
North Carolina election officials began mailing absentee ballots to overseas and military voters last Friday

It proposed this rendering for a 2,700-square-foot restaurant in Mint Hill
MINT HILL – Panda Express hopes to open a Chinese restaurant with a drive-thru window on Albemarle Road between Arby’s and Sam’s Express Car Wash
senior real estate manager for Panda Express
said the quick service restaurant has grown to about 2,400 locations and 60,000 employees since the 1980s
Panda Express is family-owned and operated
Panda Express operates 30 locations in North Carolina and three in Charlotte
including UNC Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas International Airport
“We have a little bit different [setup] than your average kind of QSR,” DiBernardo told Mint Hill commissioners
We average about 15 people a shift – probably about 30 to 40 people total a store between associates
Mint Hill zoning requires restaurants in general business districts obtain a conditional-use permit for drive-thrus
DiBernardo told commissioners the drive-thru will allow customers to grab-and-go their food
which would prevent congestion inside the 59-seat restaurant
Customers will be able to access the property
through an existing curb cut in between the site and Sam’s Express Car Wash
a civil engineer with Ingenium Enterprises
There’s also a rear access road behind the site that connects to the Arby’s property and empties out into Beaver Farm Road
The rezoning request did not receive any pushback from the community during the Nov
14 public hearing but Mint Hill commissioners asked plenty of questions about the brand in addition to details about drive-thru queuing and the location of the dumpster
The Mint Hill Planning Board is scheduled to review the plan Nov
Commissioners may decide on the proposal as early as Dec

Trump was expected at an event at The Mosack Group on Allen Station Road on Sept
the campaign noted that the event was taking part in the backdrop of touting the Trump administration-era Buy American Act
The appearance is one of several lately across North Carolina
from candidates on both sides of the political aisle.

showing North Carolina is a key player in determining the next president.
is becoming the new norm in North Carolina politics,” Bitzer said.
Polls show the presidential race is either in a dead heat

Bitzer also noted that the local appearance is not out of the ordinary
noting that “urban suburbs” are “the most competitive areas of the state.”
Wednesday’s rally is likely to cause traffic issues and delays
along with an increased security presence between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Mint Hill – on the opposite end of Mecklenburg County — lasting from the late morning through the early afternoon.
