SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stolen trailer investigation in a Mira Mesa neighborhood evolved into a standoff that lasted several hours Friday morning before five people were taken into police custody
a person reported their trailer had been stolen and they discovered that the stolen trailer was posted on Facebook Marketplace
The reporting party said they tracked the trailer to the 7800 block of Calico Street
When responding officers searched the neighborhood
they found another trailer about a block away that was also reported stolen
A man who was inside that trailer initially refused officers’ orders to come out
but he eventually surrendered without incident
ABC 10News learned officers discovered a gun inside that trailer
The other trailer was parked in front of a home
but four people believed to be linked to the thefts refused to leave house when they were asked to exit by officers
a SWAT team and vehicle arrived at the scene at around 7:45 a.m
SWAT officers entered the home and used flash bangs in attempt to get the four people to leave the home
The three men and a woman inside were eventually detained
but no other details on their apprehension were released
SDPD officials at the scene said they are investigating the possibility that the home served as a base for an organized crime ring
especially if it's a chop shop or an active criminal organization that's going on
it's something we're taking seriously and we're going to use our search warrants
our SWAT teams to handle these types of issues.”
The owner of one of the stolen trailers told ABC 10News reporter Adam Campos that his trailer was stolen more than two weeks ago
He said he was supposed to go on a camping trip with his family
but when he went to a storage to retrieve it
A San Diego Unified School District official said nearby Salk Elementary School was not affected by the police activity and was not placed on lockdown
residents who lived near the home were told to shelter-in-place
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A woman was found dead inside a home that was on fire early Monday morning in Mira Mesa
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said
crews were dispatched to the 10800 block of Westonhill Drive just after 2:30 a.m
Crews arrived as heavy smoke and flames were coming from the back of the residence
Officials said the morning’s light drizzle prevented the fire from spreading out of control
but when firefighters searched the interior
they discovered an unidentified woman dead in the back of the home
It took crews about 15 minutes to knock the flames down; the blaze was completely put out after about another 30 minutes
SDFD officials stated the fire started in the back of the house; the residents said they were alerted to the fire after smelling smoke
SDFD officials said it appeared the home did not have any working smoke detectors
ABC 10News learned the Red Cross was helping the two displaced people
the fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to the home and an estimated $200,000 in damage to the home’s contents
The cause of the fire is under investigation
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Mira Mesa are expressing their frustration over ongoing delays in the construction of a new park adjacent to Jonas Salk Elementary School
ABC 10News reached out to city and school officials for answers
“It’s been definitely a big challenge,” parent An Nguyen said of the ongoing construction
“We stopped venting after a while," added fellow Salk Elementary parent Raghu Nagesh
City of San Diego officials and San Diego Unified School District broke ground on the $12 million project
intended to combine Maddox Park with Salk Park
Initial renderings promised a significant transformation of 4.1 acres from barren land to a grassy oval featuring walking trails
The park was expected to open in February 2024
“I used to come to this park pretty much every day with the kids
City spokesperson Tyler Becker provided an update
progress has been slowed due to procurement-related challenges
but construction crews continue to work on grading and forming the sundial and installing irrigation at Oval Field
as well as finishing the comfort station ..
Upon the start of construction in November 2022
the park was expected to open to the public in February 2024
but the expected opening has been delayed to this summer
The extended timeline is a result of unforeseen circumstances including procurement- and weather-related challenges since the project began."
Residents are skeptical; when they look through the gates
they see a mostly barren field in the Maddox Park area and wonder if there will be even more delays this spring
“It’s kind of frustrating because I have three kids who were expecting the park to be open," said Kevin Yu
"I’ve been trying to get them to be more patient and wait it out.”
A San Diego Unified School District spokesperson said in a statement: “Like everyone
we want projects that improve communities to be completed as fast as possible
and we trust the City of San Diego is committed to the same.”
parents say they're excited about other newly opened parks in the area
like Wagenheim Park and the renovations of the Mira Mesa Community Park and Rec Center
But they'll be glad when the Salk park opens and they can walk to a park closer to home

Surveys consistently show the United States Postal Service is viewed favorably by a vast majority of the American public
But postal workers say the Postal Service is under threat by the Trump administration and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency
Last week, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sent a letter to members of Congress saying he would work with DOGE to cut 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the Postal Service budget
unionized postal workers rallied across the country Thursday
Several of those rallies were in San Diego County
including one outside the Mira Mesa post office
Union members there said the Trump administration and its allies are attempting a hostile takeover of the Postal Service that threatens the jobs of more than 600,000 workers
They accused the administration of trying to privatize the Postal Service
and called on members of Congress to stand up and protect the agency
The union members said if the administration's efforts are successful
it would lead to higher costs and diminished service
President of the American Postal Workers Union
San Diego Local Bob Waterhouse said the service has faced attacks before
“Now we’re looking at an administration that does not care about rules
already put people in place in the courts and said that he’s above the law. So
he’s going to come in and do whatever it is he wants. We need the people to stop him from coming in here in the first place," he said
Thursday featured a bit of an odd juxtaposition
At the same time the rallies were going on
the Postal Service was conducting a hiring event at the main post office in the Carmel Mountain area
A person running the event said the Postal Service was hiring for a variety of positions
a Postal Service media representative said
"We are hosting the hiring fair to assist applicants to apply for needed positions within the San Diego region
These include carriers and automotive technicians."
The representative did not answer KPBS' questions as to the seeming contradiction between the two events
Waterhouse said at the rally that postal workers are planning another rally this Sunday at the Mira Mesa post office
(KGTV) — A man survived a violent crash in Mira Mesa that left his vehicle upside down early Monday morning
The collision happened just after 1:30 a.m
the car struck a parked car after hitting another one head-on
The driver was still inside the overturned car when police arrived
San Diego Fire and Rescue crews got the driver out and he was taken to the hospital to be evaluated
Police confirmed to ABC 10News that the driver was on his way home from his birthday party and had been drinking
There is no word on if the driver was arrested
SAN DIEGO - The structural framework for Mira Mesa High School’s new classroom and student services facility is now complete
with the final steel beam put into place on Friday.
Students and staff joined Board of Education Trustee Sabrina Bazzo and Acting Superintendent Dr
then watched as it was hoisted and set into place.

the existing student services facility will be converted into new classrooms.
“Academics are paramount at Mira Mesa High School

aging classrooms and common areas were renovated
a new visitor and administrator parking lot will be added

“Seeing this framework today reminds me of our goal of creating a stable and joyful environment for students to succeed,” said Bagula
“It’s an honor to see the smiles on these students
knowing they will soon have a modern building to call home.”
These upgrades follow a series of renovations at the 49-year-old campus
In Spring 2023, construction was completed on baseball field renovations
which included new grass infield and outfield
and a CIF regulation backstop at the baseball field
a new public address system and drinking fountain
The field followed the completion of the first phase of the Mira Mesa High School Whole Site Modernization project, which included the construction of one of the district's largest music buildings
upgrades to collaborative workspaces in the media center
and the creation of outdoor learning spaces.
Other bond projects include CCTE Engineering
and Culinary Arts facilities renovations and photovoltaic panels over the parking lots on the north and southeast sides of campus.
“The Mira Mesa community has invested in us for nearly five decades so it’s our time to give back,” said Bazzo
“The taxpayers who voted for our bond measures have given us the platform to upgrade all schools
including Mira Mesa High School.”
Construction for the second phase of the Whole Site Modernization is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2027.

A man, who we now know was 26-year-old Pedro Ortega, was with his son by the playground- mauled by his own three dogs.
“You don't really have stuff like this that happens here. So here, like, somebody's face got mangled at this park,” said Stewart Marto, who lives nearby the park.
Witnesses tried to break up the attack by hitting the dogs with golf clubs.
When officers arrived, they tased the canines as they ran off.
Moments after the attack, new video shows one of the dogs walking into a nearby garage.
The homeowner stayed still to not provoke the dog- which he said was panting and covered in blood.
“He was skinny, you could see all of his ribs. He was covered in blood, head to toe. So it was probably not his own, and he had taser dart sticking out of him,” said Kevin Pratt, describing one of the dogs first hand.
Remnants of the encounter, still visible days later.
“We still have blood on the car from where he, like, wiped his face when he went through it,” said Pratt.
The other dogs also ran off after the attack, prompting a lockdown at a nearby elementary school.
All three were eventually captured, put into a bite quarantine, and humanely euthanized after being signed over by a second owner.
Police say a second victim suffered serious bite injuries and is now recovering in the hospital.
“I've never seen anything like this happen here before, and hope it never happens again,” said Pratt.
The Humane Society determined the dogs were an “XL bully breed.”
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Saturday are investigating the death of a 29-year-old pedestrian who was killed trying to cross the street in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego.
San Diego Police Department officers were called at 1:52 a.m. to Mira Mesa Boulevard and Westmore Road, where they learned a 31-year-old man driving a 2023 Tesla west on Mira Mesa struck the pedestrian, who was crossing the street at the intersection against a red light. The pedestrian ran in front of the Tesla and was struck by the vehicle, police said.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the department said.
Police said alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
The department's Traffic Division is handling the investigation and anyone with information related to it was asked to call 858- 495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
Print A Mira Mesa man used a pair of homemade bombs to try to blow open ATM machines in San Diego
44-year-old Son Nguyen made two failed attempts to steal cash from ATM machines in the University City and Rancho Bernardo neighborhoods in June
Investigators said they identified Nguyen as the lead suspect after reviewing surveillance video and identifying him through his vehicle registration and facial features
authorities arrested Nguyen and charged him with two counts of using explosives to damage property
He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison if convicted
“Fortunately, neither of these incidents resulted in injury or successful theft of cash,” U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath in San Diego said Friday in a news release
“With the discovery of chemicals and equipment in the search today
Authorities accused a San Diego man of using explosives to try to steal from ATM machines
(United States Attorney’s Office) Both incidents happened in the pre-dawn hours
Authorities allege that Nguyen made his first attempt on June 8 at an ATM outside of a California Coast Credit Union
using a makeshift bomb constructed from a five-gallon blue plastic container with a white spout and black plastic pipe
Nguyen targeted an ATM at a First Citizen’s Bank in Rancho Bernardo about 20 miles north of the initial attempt
the electrical wiring at the ATM caught fire
causing smoke but not enabling theft of money
Neither the San Diego Fire Department nor the U.S
Attorney’s Office provided an estimate of the property damage that occurred
investigators found the ingredients needed to make black powder and other equipment and clothing believed to have been used in the attempted robberies
black powder is a type of explosive that can be made simply at home with household products and other chemicals available online
It’s not the first time that would-be thieves have tried to blow open an ATM for what they assumed would be a quick smash and grab
Two years ago, a detonation at a Bank of America ATM in Palmdale was so large, it burst store windows and could be heard a mile away. Even with the strength of the blast, the ATM still did not give up its contents. There have been no arrests in that case.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three dogs involved in the fatal attack of their owner were euthanized
according to San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson
The incident happened at noon Friday when the man was walking with his son and dogs in close proximity to Ericson Elementary School
The San Diego Police Department and SDHS's Humane Law Enforcement officers responded to multiple calls about the attack
SDPD said the three dogs were still attacking the man
Officers used their tasers to stop the attack
Thompson said SDHS and SDPD worked closely to locate the two loose dogs and impounded a third dog that had been secured in a vehicle
All three dogs were immediately placed into mandatory bite quarantine protocol under SDHS care
Police said the man was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital
SDPD told 10News the man died from his injuries
A second individual was also transported to the hospital after sustaining serious bite injuries while trying to assist the first victim
Authorities said they obtained video footage that showed the dogs' owner walking with the three dogs toward the park two hours before SDHS and SDPD were notified of the incident
Thompson said a second owner of the three dogs agreed to sign over the dogs to SDHS to be "humanely euthanized."
The second owner disclosed to SDHS that the dogs were purchased as "XL bull breeds."
there was no previous history involving the dogs
The dogs will be tested for rabies as part of standard protocol

Rice bowls are topped with fried eggs and Cantonese roast meats like duck and barbecue pork
Hong Kong-style cafes are well known for their drinks and desserts

was killed by his three XL bullies in Mesa Viking Park in San Diego
The park is located next to Ericson Elementary School. Police quickly captured two of the dogs, but a third remained at large, causing police to lockdown the school. Police later found the third dog at the owner's home, which is close to the park. NBC San Diego reports that one of the bystanders who intervened was also attacked by the dogs
Both victims were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital
where the dog owner was pronounced dead at 4:45 pm
The status of the second victim is unknown
Neighbor Steve Marto captured photos of the dogs while police were at the scene
They are just like massive muscle," Marto said
"I don't understand why someone would want to have three dogs that size
You're just looking for a problem in my opinion." All three dogs were confiscated by the San Diego Humane Society and placed into bite quarantine
The dog owner's young son is now with his mother
The Martos also spoke to 10News
"You don't really have stuff like this that happens here..
Like somebody's face got mangled at this park
An hour from now this park can be filled with kids coming out of that school
It's sad that that could've happened to little kids -- the elementary school's right here," Stewart said
he also described the XL bullies as massive
They were probably close to 120 to 150 pound dogs," Stewart told NBC San Diego
On Monday, the victim was identified as 26-year old Pedro Luis Ortega
He was with his son on the playground when his three XL bullies attacked him
and he had a taser dart sticking out of him," Pratt said
Images of the dog were captured on his surveillance camera
That dog was later secured in a vehicle near the park
The other two dogs eluded authorities but were eventually captured
A Good Samaritan who tried to help Ortega by beating the dogs with a golf club sustained serious injuries
All three dogs were initially placed into bite quarantine then humanely euthanized after being surrendered by their co-owner
A memorial where the fatal dog mauling occurred says
The same XL bully is seen standing in a garage with a taser dart sticking out of its neck
At least one XL bully being confiscated at Mesa Viking Park after the fatal dog mauling
a shoe and broken golf club seen at the Mesa Viking Park dog attack scene
Please review our comment policy
You found the one out of four or five news articles that actually mentioned the breed of dog; the others did not and one even said that information was not available
XL bullies and the Cane Corso are becoming more and more popular on Craigslist Pets
being re-homed as adults and as puppies in San Diego county and adjoining counties
It’s unclear why other media did not identify the breed. XL bullies are well publicized, especially given that the UK, Scotland and Ireland banned the breed over the past year. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ban-on-xl-bully-dogs
I’m always alert to whether or not the breed of dog is identified
Because news outlets get so much pushback from viewers
It’s unfortunate because it would be one way of educating the public
news outlets love their “feel good” stories about some poor pittie that needs to be adopted
the behemoth pet food industry is buying time-it’s a major source of revenue
That’s why dog attacks in general are often not even covered
It’s the old adage: Follow the money
and my heart and sense of justice were often crushed by the news that will not be reported because of money interests
I’ve always wondered why dog attacks weren’t usually covered by network news
NBC Nightly news for example has aired so many sappy feel good dog stories over the years
yet when a child is mauled to death by pitbulls
they’d presume all dogs are 100% gentle
Can’t offend the dog food industry/advertisers now can they
wth would anyone take one mauler to a kids park
but relieved it was the adult owner who got the business end of his mutants
And I’m sure like every other pit owner he’d swear up and down that ‘My dogs would never”
I read that a lot of them are descended from one stud dog that had his sperm shipped to England and spread across the USA
It was horrible for children to witness that
They are also inbred from that monster stud dog who was actually a killer
I have forgotten where I read the article
Killer Kimbo and others, which served as foundation stock. Much has been written about this, here is one: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/09/14/britains-xl-bullys-descend-one-inbred-pet-us-killer-kimbo/
He or she is scarred for life after watching their father torn to shreds by the family dogs
I can’t stop thinking about what that child witnessed
either – and it was an entirely preventable tragedy caused only by (I presume) the father’s desire to own “tough” dogs
It’s a miracle the dogs didn’t turn on the child as well
but an innocent child had to lose a parent and witness his horrible
That’s the thing – even when it’s the owner who is fatally mauled
How I wish pitbulls could be universally annihilated
10 News San Diego just reported that the San Diego Humane Society has euthanized all three XL Bullies
A second owner of the dog gave them permission to do so
and said that they were purchased with the understanding that they were XL Bullies
I bet there are pics of the killers in stores and restaurants
Glad no innocents were injured when his canine IEDs went off
The dead man’s child is going to have a long row to hoe
It is rough growing up without a father and rougher still to watch him get ripped limb from limb by his “loving pets”
Hope the good Samaritan that was attacked makes a full recovery and the 3 beasts had their rabies shots
Granted the odds of 3 XL Pits all being current on their shots are slim to none
Just named him today, “A man, who we now know was 26-year-old Pedro Ortega, was with his son by the playground- mauled by his own three dogs.” Will be back in a few hours to do an update: https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/watch-video-shows-one-of-the-dogs-that-killed-its-owner-moments-after-attack
the video of the blood-soaked XL bully in those people’s garage is chilling
cries of abuse will give rise to why the dogs killed their owner
There’s always a lot of excuses but no good reasons from pit bull lobbyists
The reason is crystal clear…these dogs were born to kill
it’s unfortunate the witness made the comment about ribs showing
It’s perfectly normal for a young short-haired dog to have somewhat visible ribs
I watched the video and the dog appeared to be a normal weight to me
but that will absolutely embolden pit advocates to cry abuse
why didn’t it scavenge through garbage or tear open a bag of kibble
I looked at the video and the dog didn’t look at all emaciated
I will agree it wasn’t a chunky monkey like my dog
and you could see a few ribs but nothing wrong with that
Sickening how after every attack they go into immediate damage control
Here’s the link to the Bully Watch UK’s coverage of Kimbo: https://banthebullyxluk.wordpress.com/2023/08/01/finding-kimbo/
Perhaps if PD hadn’t spent time carefully capturing 2 of the 3 killer dogs
It annoys me when I see the killer dogs led safely away on the end of a pole: Kill killers onsite so they don’t kill again
I understand not wanting to shoot with kids nearby
How about someone invent a capture pole laced with pink juice
A dog that kills its owner is broken forever and a danger to everyone
it’s a risk they will somehow get free to kill again
Maybe the other 2 will be declared fit for rehoming
We just can’t anticipate the levels of stupidity that may prevail
Real dog lovers would steer clear of dangerous breeds because these incidents traumatize young witnesses
who will likely then develop a lifelong fear of all dogs
why choose one of these monsters for yourself and your family?
I’ve seen videos of pitties and xls showing how friendly they are
But to me their excessive licking and mouthplay resemble how canapes whet the appetites of gourmets
Sadly if a cop fires his weapon he is then on desk duty until that firing of the weapon is investigated
It has gotten to the point that police will not dispatch dangerous dogs because it is too much paperwork and small departments cant afford to loose an officer for weeks
sometimes even longer while an investigation is done
Another reason police are gun shy around killer dogs is every pit pusher in the country will call the department’s emergency number to complain about the “poor widdle pitty they murdered”
This man brought his child and 3 very large dogs to the playground all at the same time
How was he supposed to take care of his child while trying to control 3 dogs of any breed
I can’t wrap my head around the thought process that led to this
I can’t imagine this scenario ending up in a good way
Because it’s not about caring for the child
That money plus what he spent on dog food and veterinary bills could have been put into college funds for his two children
Instead they will grow up without any support from him at all
At least the dogs didn’t attack the little boy or his sibling-to-be
