Once a farm of lemon and black walnut trees
the property became an established beach hotel by 1910
according to Rosewood Miramar Beach's website
the hotel was beloved by legendary newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst
who would stop by on his way to Hearst Castle
Miramar closed in 2000 and remained empty for nearly two decades
Rosewood Miramar Beach is currently one of only 15 properties worldwide to hold a triple Five-Star title from the Forbes Travel Guide
But those aren't the only stars attached to the resort
Rosewood Miramar Beach also quickly caught the attention of Hollywood
attracting everyone from Patrick Schwarzenegger and Larry David to Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian
One of my favorite places in the 16-acre property was this gorgeous hall in the resort's main building
The classic red roses popped against the black-and-white checkerboard floor
which was illuminated by a dazzling chandelier and flanked by a spiral staircase
Rosewood Miramar Beach has 119 rooms and 34 suites
offering garden bungalows or beach-facing retreats that start at $1,695 a night
Business Insider received a media rate for accommodations and dining during the two-night stay
My stylish 960-square-foot suite came with a large wooden deck with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean
The interior leaned into the nautical theme with textured blue-and-white pinstripe wallpaper
unafraid of mixing bold fabrics and chic fixtures that added plenty of personality
AMA Sushi's interior is a beautiful study of sleek Japanese minimalism
The marble sushi bar seemed to glow against the dark wood walls while a fireplace roared under a moody painting of the moon
Our $135 omakase menu began with a delicious snow crab
followed by a sashimi course featuring bluefin tuna
One of my favorite dishes of the night was the delicious red miso soup with clams
The Manor Bar felt like the kind of library you'd find at a sprawling estate in the English countryside
but the bar was packed and brimming with energy
I was almost shocked it didn't smell like cigar smoke
which featured drinks named after iconic literary villains
The "Lady Macbeth" melded gin with pineapple
while the "Tom Buchanan" had two types of Johnnie Walker whiskey
Even the rainy morning couldn't damper my mood as I watched the ocean from the comfort of my plush king bed
The French doors offered a perfect sea view
The Revere Room's Tiffany-blue walls were covered in illustrations of white roses and bluebirds
Frosted Christmas trees twinkled in the corner for the holidays while natural light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling French doors
We started with the gluten-free lemon ricotta pancakes
which had a lovely fluffy texture and were served with a delicious blueberry sauce
and Havarti cheese between two soft and flaky homemade sourdough slices
The centerpiece of Rosewood Miramar Beach is the Manor House
Tucked behind the Manor House is a massive and perfectly manicured lawn
which made me feel like I was in someone's incredibly nice backyard
the lawn was frequently filled with children chasing after their adorable pups
The resort could have easily coasted on its beach access alone
but every inch of the estate is designed to evoke beauty and elegance
The air is naturally perfumed with scents from the gardenia and lavender bushes
told me that Rosewood Miramar Beach was designed to make guests feel like they were "being hosted in a private home."
I didn't squeeze in a workout during my stay
but I had to check out the resort's indoor/outdoor fitness studio
where guests can enjoy weekly fitness classes and private personal training sessions
and elliptical machines dotted the gym's patio
The cotton-candy-pink Miramar Jolly cars are inspired by the open-top taxis of Capri
They feature wicker seats and canopies and are free for guests who want to be chauffeured to the beach or around the property
The oceanfront Miramar Beach Bar is a small restaurant on the deck above Caruso's, the resort's Michelin-starred restaurant
It was just steps away from our beach suite and offered gorgeous views of the sea sparkling under the California sun
Our tacos — tempura fish and red chili-braised beef — were solid but couldn't compete with our breakfast at The Revere Room or our dinners at AMA Sushi and Caruso's
I'd skip the food at Miramar Beach Bar and just grab a drink while watching the sunset
the family that first owned the property — which was originally a farm — decided to build a guest house after the train tracks were built in 1887
The Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight Amtrak now cut through the resort en route to the Santa Barbara Amtrak station
and a guard is always on duty for safety purposes
While the trains didn't pass by very frequently
it was fun watching everyone around us stop to admire them whenever one came through
Before dinner, I had the opportunity to sit down with Massimo Falsini, the chef at Caruso's and director of culinary operations at Rosewood Miramar Beach
Falsini's menu seamlessly blends his Italian roots with California ingredients
All the seafood at Caruso's is "from the ocean in front of you," Falsini told me
including the spiny Santa Barbara lobster and the signature Channel Islands halibut (which were both fantastic)
"We don't fly in anything; we only buy from local small fishermen in order to support the community," said the chef
who hopes to make Caruso's a zero-carbon footprint restaurant by 2026
The open-air space allows you to hear the waves and smell the sea as you dine amid the beautiful navy-blue leather booths and pristine white chairs
The service was impeccable from start to finish
The amuse-bouches included cones stuffed with caviar and gougères plump with truffle cream
Olive oil was decanted tableside for the bread basket
and the Baja Kanpachi crudo looked like a work of art
One of my favorite courses of the night was the honeynut squash vellutata soup
which was topped with an intricate tuile of vines and tasted like autumn
The dinner was so good that I think the restaurant deserves a second Michelin star
Read my full review of Caruso's here.
which is for adults 21 and up and features 19 cabanas
The cabana pool features a scalloped zero-edge border
a design choice that makes it feel whimsical
which is right next to the pool and offers gourmet burgers and house-made gelato
we learned there were s'mores kits at the front desk
which we could always pick up and enjoy by one of the fire pits
I finally got to try the kit on our last day
opening the bag to find the most classic of s'mores ingredients: Honey Maid graham crackers
My boyfriend and I giggled like kids at camp as we used the provided wooden sticks to roast our marshmallows over the fire before building our s'mores
it felt fitting to end our stay with the sun shining down on us at the beach
I could've easily laid on the sand all day
There's a designated beach butler who brings food and drinks
and the resort even has a falconer who helps keep seagulls and pigeons at bay
In the era of #quietluxury
and everything felt inoffensive and uninspired
But Rosewood Miramar Beach isn't afraid to make the space feel comfortable yet distinct
There's a fine line between Nantucket and coastal grandma
and the resort knows exactly where to stand
And with the fantastic dinner at Caruso's and the sexy Manor Bar
Rosewood Miramar Beach is perfect for a special-occasion romantic getaway

The 90-seat restaurant and bar will have 1,555 square feet of indoor space and a 500-square-foot outdoor balcony

Petersburg architect Jack Bodziak and partner Britt Browne Hayes on plans for the $40 million project that will keep the resort’s nostalgic 1950s-inspired design
The additional rooms would range from 400 to around 500 square feet
A guest room fronting the entrance will be converted into a temporary lobby while the renovation is in progress
A new lobby will be built near the front of the property
The renovations will also bring the parking count to 48 spaces
more than doubling the 20 spaces currently on site. The resort will also have a full valet service
The project will not impact views from the neighboring resorts

The property sits adjacent to a public beach access point and sand dunes

The Bodziak firm and Bowden are working with the state to address the situation

Now that the project has approval from the planning board
Pete Beach City Council is expected to hold a first reading for the project in December
construction work will commence in early 2025
The Bodziak firm is continuing to develop and draft construction documents and drawings while awaiting full project approval
The latest plan is a scaled-back version of the original vision to construct a modern building with 54 new rooms to the property
which city commissioners approved in 2021 under Mayor Al Johnson’s administration

the Rosewood Miramar Beach Resort and its charismatic owner
will meet with the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission (CPC)
seeking approval for needed improvements to make their resort more attractive to its 5-star clientele and to the Montecito community
subsidized by the Miramar at far less than market rates
has the admirable benefits of keeping key members of its workforce on-site
and helping satisfy the required affordable housing quota assigned to unincorporated county areas like Montecito
No other private employer in Montecito has offered our community this benefit without upfront government subsidies
The plan is to build 26 units of new workforce housing – seventeen studios
three 1-Bedroom and six 2-BR units – all built over the present surface parking at the lower end of S
There may be some griping that not all 26 units may be designated by the County as serving very-low and low-income professional thresholds – such as housekeepers
Taking supervisors and managers off long-commutes has an equal benefit to reducing traffic and having trained managers on-site for emergencies such as earthquake
This project should be applauded by neighbors and the community
It should be approved as submitted with an expression of gratitude to the resort for attempting to help solve our problem of providing employees with affordable housing on a voluntary basis
Underground parking is extremely expensive to build
especially after the resort has been open for five years
The good news is that new underground parking will add a net new 45 parking spaces to the resort’s current capacity
It is hard not to applaud additional covered parking spaces
Guests and visitors are relieved of the onerous task of finding parking because every car pulling up to the Miramar
Valet parking can add 20% to parking capacity because car-keys are retained by valet personnel
Luxury resort owners have found a surprising number of international and domestic guests who are looking for long-term stays with immediate-access to 5-star resort services like heated pools
guestrooms for visiting family and friends
dining and takeout services for meals or entertaining
and the added safety of 24-hour on-site security
The original county entitlement for the Miramar Beach Resort was 186 keys
Through the 12-year planning approval process
the number of guestrooms was voluntarily reduced by the Miramar to its current size of 119 rooms and 34 suites
for a total of 153 keys on 16 acres of prime
That’s very low-density for a beachfront resort
and a shortfall of 33 keys below the original entitlements
long-term stay units with two or three bedrooms is no threat to the character of the resort
are adding quiet luxury specialty shops as a required 5-star amenity for guests and nearby neighbors seeking a relaxed personal experience
Luxury retail is undergoing a defining transformation in its efforts to attract a larger share of the highly desirable new millennials and Gen Z resort guests
ages 20 to 45 – the most coveted affluent shoppers
Guests willing to pay several thousand dollars a night for a fantasy weekend or an anniversary offer a concentrated target market for high-end retailers
new high-end spenders check in or out every day
bringing a continuous flow of ideal millennials and Gen Z target market customers every 24-hours
Luxury retail shops have been fleeing Santa Barbara like rats on roller-skates
Saks and Nordstrom have shuttered on State Street; Tiffany and Luis Vuitton have closed at La Cumbre
They are being replaced by T-shirt shops and tourist traps
affluent millennials and Generation Z shoppers are seeking casualwear that offers an expression of freedom – a mixture of casual and playful designs
They want luxury accessories that add a unique personal statement
Miramar guests have both the time and financial ability to pursue luxury products during their stay
we have a world-class genius in reinventing high-end shopping experiences that combine quality products with convenience and personal service
Many residents of Montecito enjoy browsing specialty boutiques to keep abreast of new products and new trends.
Opponents of the Miramar’s improvement plan have focused on the retail component as the weakest link in the Miramar proposed upgrades
They have falsely labeled the additional shops as: “A major shopping mall that will destroy the character of the Montecito neighborhood.”
Take a closer look at the proposed retail additions
Miramar guests and local visitors will exit the 101
stop at the top of the on-ramp at Eucalyptus Lane
and proceed down the San Ysidro on-ramp to enter the Miramar Resort entrance to valet park
There will be no vehicle or pedestrian access from Eucalyptus Drive
That means no neighborhood visibility of shops
no retail sign visibility and no specialty shop parking
That is not my definition of a “shopping mall.” If opponents want to keep frightening people by calling this request a “shopping mall,” go ahead
casually elegant village of unparalleled natural beauty
We try desperately to preserve our village character – small roads built for beauty
not for speed of traffic; exceptional schools; secluded homes hidden behind stone walls and hedges; and world-class resorts tucked between the mountains and the sea
We want to preserve Montecito as a place of natural beauty and charm
The Miramar is an important part of this aura of “casual elegance.”
It is ironic that local neighbors who fought the hardest to block the Miramar have benefitted the most economically since the Miramar opened in February 2019
It is difficult to argue that the addition of a few luxury resort shops that can only be accessed through the existing entrance to the hotel
with no access to the neighboring community
will have a negative impact on nearby homes that have enjoyed 50 to 100% increases in neighborhood home values since the Miramar opened
The fact is that the neighborhood has become far more attractive and desirable as evidenced by the residential price increases
I hope that Rick Caruso and his talented team are allowed
to do whatever he thinks best for his 16 acre-site
so long as he meets zoning codes and does not violate his existing conditions of approval
The opposition group has expressed concern over the height of new shops and long-term-stay units
the Caruso team has already cut their plan from three-stories to two and reduced the retail square footage by a third to placate neighbors
Park in the All Saints-by-the-Sea parking lot
The view from the parking lot is the only partial mountain view affected by the Miramar request
Most importantly for members of the Santa Barbara County Planning Commissioners
Rick Caruso deserves enormous credit for partnering with the Montecito community – listening to our concerns
That is rare for an uber-wealthy businessman
That should count for something in obtaining his new approvals
Long-time planning commissioners such as Laura M
Michael Cooney who have fought so hard to preserve and improve such Montecito “crown jewels” as Lotusland and Casa del Herrero
should extend the same support to the Rosewood Miramar
Hammond’s Beach and Butterfly Beach into a stroller’s beachfront paradise from Olive Mill/Channel Drive to San Ysidro/Eucalyptus Lane
We need to treat Rick Caruso as a welcome neighbor
If we keep punishing him with hideously-expensive permitting processes and claims that are “as thin as the broth made from the shadow of a chicken” that somehow a few added shops will destroy the character of this community
he can become exhausted by the process and sell the Miramar to an offshore sheik or a Wall Street real estate private equity firm
cut employee costs and care less about this community
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was interviewed last Wednesday on CBS by Stephen Colbert and she made this provocative observation: “Mother Earth is having a fit.” It was her way of saying that the climate crisis is real
We were all mesmerized as Hurricane Laura […]

Public works should be able to snap their fingers and magically have the ocean move back
Come on people they are not magicians this is what happens to roads that are right against the ocean
Their hands are probably tied by the worthless coastal commission and ridiculous red tape
the ocean is an unstoppable force and when you choose to be right next to it with your house or business you have to deal with Mother Nature
I think expectations are a little high from the crybaby’s complaining
Miramar Beach residents are urging beachgoers to use the Miramar Hotel’s public access to the beach instead of the Eucalyptus Lane entrance due to safety concerns regarding the erosion at the base of the stairs
at high tide beachgoers must walk over a mound of rocks atop the sand in order to reach the beach
which may be dangerous for elderly people and small children
It is believed that these rocks travelled down the cleared-out creeks and debris basins during the major storms that occur every winter
Longtime residents explain that in the past
the sand usually returned by July; this year
The City of Carpinteria has faced its own trouble with beach erosion and is currently working to fix the issue
The California State Coastal Conservancy granted $1.62 million to the city’s Carpinteria Living Shoreline Project
which will help with “Beach Nourishment and Dune Restoration.” The County of Santa Barbara does not work directly to fix erosion issues due to the strict protocol that California’s Coastal Act and Coastal Commission have when dealing with beach erosion
the issue must be dealt with and approved by the Coastal Commission
BEACON (Beach Erosion Authority for Clean Oceans and Nourishment) is a joint powers authority that works to carefully study and devise strategic plans to fix erosion issues found on beaches along the Central Coast
the county of Santa Barbara is working with BEACON to include Montecito’s erosion issue in its next meeting
County parks staff have also been informed of this issue and are working on a temporary aid for beachgoers that will not interfere with the Coastal Commission’s protocols
A request for a conditional use to offer rooftop dining atop an eight-story tower at 4200 Gulf Blvd. has to receive final approval from the City Commission.
Planner Brandon Berry said the applicant reduced the size of the resort from 54 units requested in 2021 to the current 50 units, with 12 of the units contingent on use of the hotel room density pool.
Berry said the applicant is requesting a partial site redevelopment of the existing two-story, two-building resort.
Miramar owners filed an application to demolish 10 of the existing units in favor of a new eight-story, 76-foot tower at the rear of the site containing the 30 units, with a rooftop restaurant with balcony seating.
The eighth-floor outdoor dining and drinking addition requires a conditional use permit. According to conditions with the application, music played indoors to the restaurant shall not be piped outdoors through the use of amplification equipment, speakers or other equipment between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Miramar architect Jack Bodziak said the rooftop dining facility is envisioned as a way to attract family gatherings like weddings, so guests do not have to travel off-site to a restaurant. “It would create the complete resort facility feel,” he told the planning board.
The applicant told the city that in order to create a boutique hotel feel, 20 units encompassing the northern and southern parts of the site will be renovated as part of the one- and two-story lodging units that will remain. The eight-story tower with 30 units will be on the western portion of the site.
Berry told the planning board this will increase the total site unit count to 50 units, or approximately 64.2 units per buildable acre, where a maximum of 70 units per acre is permitted, with conditional use permit and density pool allocation.
“The impervious surface area is effectively the same,” he added. “The city sets an 85% maximum. The request is for 83%, so it’s just below that maximum, and it is 2% less than what was approved in 2021.”

He noted Miramar officials will now provide one beach access at the southern end of the site, while eliminating a northern beach access primarily due to the renovation of the buildings instead of the demolition.
Miramar attorney Katie Cole told the planning board the hotel suffered “only minor damage in the storm. It is raised up surprisingly well. So there is not any expected substantial damage assessment to be declared here.”
The applicant told city planners there was a question about the current dune condition in the aftermath of the hurricanes, and whether there are greater challenges reaching the beach from Gulf Boulevard along the pedestrian pathway.
Cole noted when it comes to a discussion of the dune walkover, the applicant asked that the condition be contingent on Florida Department of Environmental Protection permits. “We’re unsure of the viability and likelihood of an overall crossover at that location,” she told the planning board.
She added they have photos that depict “the dunes shifted significantly after the past two storms. Until FDEP and the city does its dune analysis … we’re unsure what actual permits would be available for us. The applicant is obviously willing to grant the easement that’s necessary to get people out to the beach. We’re just unclear of this specific location and how it would cross the dunes.”
Architect Bodziak said what will happen with the dune will largely be a decision made by state agencies. “The dunes do create a bit of a walkover problem right now in that, when you go down that existing right of way to the beach, it’s about 10 to 12 feet to the top of the dune. I’ve seen people climb over it, I can’t tell you that’s what you want to continue with, but that is the condition that exists.”
In recognition of the recent hurricane season, Berry said one recommended staff condition mandates that guests be evacuated at time of a hurricane watch instead of a warning. “We wanted to make sure the island is cleared so the focus can be placed on the residents when it comes time to evacuate Zone A.”
City commissioners will hear the conditional use request at a future meeting.

— The owners of the Miramar Beach Resort narrowly received approval from the St
Pete Beach city commission earlier this month to renovate a portion of the existing hotel and build a new eight-story tower
“It’s going to be great to have something new open,” said Kevin Bowden
“Give people something to look forward to.”
a rooftop restaurant and will be the first new hotel space in St
Pete Beach since Hotel Zamora opened in 2014
will contain 20 renovated rooms which will be flood proof
It’s the existing low-lying building that nearly put the project in jeopardy
Mayor Adrian Petrila and Commissioner Lisa Robinson indicated they would vote “no” on the project because it wasn’t entirely above base flood elevation and did not fully comply with the city’s comprehensive plan
Commissioners Karen Marriott and Betty Rzewnicki indicated they would vote “yes” because the low-lying building was a FEMA compliant and there were no complaints from residents
Vice Mayor Joe Moholland was left as the swing vote
Moholland said he was turned off by Bowden refusing to offer extra money to help the city with crucial budget shortfalls
it was announced that the sewer system will need $25 million in repairs over the next five years and Freebee costs the city $770,000 annually to operate
“There was no contribution for Freebee or intermodal or anything to help with the sewer,” said Moholland
“You folks have made your position on that clear.”
Bowden responded, “My arm can be twisted if it needs to be.”
Moholland said as long as he was sitting in the commission chair
he planned to ask every developer who comes before him for contributions to the sewer and Freebee
He got Bowden to agree to spend more than $100,000 on the Freebee
“Are you willing to contribute $10,000 a year for 10 years?”
Commissioner Marriot then made a motion to approve the project
which Moholland was second on and voted “yes.” The new hotel and renovations were approved on a 3-2 vote
Bowden said he was OK with the negotiating tactic
“So them needing some extra help from us was fine,” he said
happy to get it approved and really looking forward to going forward with it.”
Bowden said he has been trying to get a new hotel built for years
which was approved in 2021 after getting community feedback that it was too big
“We had one plan approved for a larger building and then we got delayed a bit and decided to make it smaller,” he said
“After hearing some of the feedback around town of the citizenry wanting less growth.”
Bowden said depending on the timing of the permit
the hotel could open as soon as December or by the first quarter of 2026
If you want to know why so many stars love Montecito
The Michelin-starred restaurant is a little slice of California heaven tucked inside the five-star Rosewood Miramar Beach resort
The sun setting over the sea is its backdrop
while a salt-kissed breeze tickles each plate of fresh seafood
After sitting down with Massimo Falsini, the chef at Caruso's
one thing became very clear to me: There will be more stars in the restaurant's future — the celebrity and the Michelin kind
the resort and restaurant have made a big splash in the world of luxury hospitality
and restaurant have all received five stars
In 2022, Caruso's received both a Michelin star and a Green Star — which honors sustainable restaurants — from the Michelin Guide
"Opening a restaurant and getting a Michelin star in a couple of years is a big deal," Falsini told me before our dinner
Falsini first fell in love with cooking when he was 16 and washing dishes at a restaurant in Rome for extra pocket money
His culinary career would take the chef across multiple continents as he cooked at luxury hotels like the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai
"I think the beauty of food is that every day is a new day
and every day is different," Falsini told me
"That's why I feel like I never work a day in my life."
There's no doubt that Falsini is working hard as the director of culinary operations at Rosewood Miramar
But his quest for perfection is to impress the guests
to feel the love of a beautiful Italian restaurant."
Even the rare California rain couldn't damper the beautiful ocean setting
which Caruso's leans into with its open-air design
The beautiful navy leather booths match the blue lacquered accent wall
and the pristine white chairs are decorated with gold brass rings
It felt like I could've been on a yacht in the South of France
The impeccable service was in motion from the moment I took my seat
Falsini believes the well-rehearsed choreography is essential to fine dining
is a big part of what we do here in Caruso's."
There's the $175 four-course experience and two chef's tasting menus priced at $285 per person
The restaurant also offers plant-based versions of its menu upon request
and a $145 three-course experience is available Monday through Thursday
Business Insider received a media rate for the four-course dinner
From the moment the first amuse-bouche arrived
it was clear I was in the midst of a five-star resort
Servers brought mini cones stuffed with king crab and caviar
Then came a delicious gougère filled with truffle cream
that's exclusive to the restaurant — and was topped with dark chocolate shavings
which I loved so much I forgot to take a picture first
A server decanted the house-made olive oil right at the table and offered two types of butter
the other with seaweed — I finished them both
"Am I allowed to bring more bread to the table?" the waiter asked
The Baja Kanpachi was served with pixie tangerines
Each ingredient was so gracefully layered together in its liquid pool of gold that I imagined the chefs in the kitchen carefully placing every piece on the plate with a tiny tweezer
The juicy tangerine shimmered against the butter-soft fish
The slivers of jalapeño provided a subtle but delightful kick of heat
The intricate and refreshing dish immediately delighted my senses
I unabashedly gasped when the honeynut squash vellutata soup
The delicately placed orange petals appeared to bloom straight from the branches
The black bowl only added to the dramatic effect
serving as the perfect backdrop for the bright-orange squash
The soup was obviously a huge hit with the group chat
but it was so much more than a pretty picture
Each velvety sip seemed to magically capture every flavor of autumn thanks to the sweet and earthy honeynut and the crunch of the hazelnut
which paired beautifully with the bright burst from the orange crème fraiche
When I sat down with Falsini before dinner
he told me that all of the seafood at Caruso's is "from the ocean in front of you."
"We don't fly in anything; we only buy from local small fishermen in order to support the community," the chef said
adding that he hopes to make Caruso's a zero-carbon footprint restaurant by 2026
Falsini even tags the fishermen he buys from when he posts the restaurant's dishes on its official Instagram page
as he did with the beautiful Santa Barbara spiny lobster girasoli
The dish was presented on a plate illustrated with blue fish
which looked as if they were swimming amid the delicious bisque
served with delicate shavings of Granny Smith apple
was butter-poached to perfection and tasted divinely tender
Falsini's first rule for cooking fish is to "love the fish," and his care and passion were on full display with this halibut
This Channel Island halibut was easily the most delicate version I've ever had
A server arrived tableside to pour the beautiful burro fuso sauce
which had a hint of sweetness from Vin Santo and a zing from makrut lime
Its flavors lingered on my tongue long after the fish was gone
which is exactly what Falsini aims to achieve with every one of his dishes
"I believe the journey of the chef is a discovery journey," he told me
"We put things together that were already made
We just have to discover them and put them together in a different way."
"It's fascinating because you become like a mad scientist," he continued
Falsini specifically made the budino dessert with Rick Caruso's favorite drink
It features chocolate-toffee pudding laced with a full shot of the whiskey and topped with whole-bean vanilla gelato
Falsini told me the dish was so popular that 80% of the restaurant's guests would choose it from the prix-fixe menu before he took it off to focus on desserts with seasonal and sustainable ingredients
the sweet treat is still available to those who ask
and I got to try it since my almond allergy ruled out the other choices
the budino is truly a dessert fit for a billionaire — no wonder it was such a hit
I've eaten at several one-star Michelin restaurants over the past few months
but the skill and imagination on display at Caruso's are on a different level
Getting to the next star isn't just about great food
And Falsini's dedication to his guests would be evident even if I hadn't gotten the chance to speak with him
Just take a look at the Yelp and Tripadvisor pages for Caruso's
I get up and think about food," Falsini told me
"I am always thinking: What can we do with the menu
can't wait to see what's next for Falsini and Caruso's

Cliff Ghersen has lived in Montecito for 48 years
"I was here when the original Miramar was existing," Ghersen said
He is one of several neighbors who oppose a mixed-use housing project that was recently approved at the Rosewood Miramar Beach resort by billionaire developer Rick Caruso
"The issue has to do completely with the retail
which we feel will cause a lot more traffic in this entire area," Ghersen explained
The project will create 26 affordable housing units for employees
and 17,500 square feet of high-end retail shops on resort property
"A 2,500 square foot retail spot is not a boutique
It's like twice as big as the house we're standing in right now," Ghersen said
He says that although the resort is creating more parking
and he’s concerned that the overflow of cars will go into the small surrounding neighborhoods
"I say build a town center but do it in the center of the town
not here in the residential neighborhood," Ghersen said
The 125-year-old All Saints-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church originally opposed the development until last month
"We felt that everybody came to the table with the right heart and the solution was found," said Reverend Channing Smith
Reverend Smith says the church’s main concern was losing the view of the mountains
"The view corridor is the first 40 feet off that white wall
and that would be one story there and then you'll be able to see the mountains from there," Smith said
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved the project 5-0 on Tuesday
rejecting appeals by neighbors and Heal the Ocean
“We are grateful for the trust the community has placed in our team and eager to continue that close partnership as we deliver a plan that all of Montecito can be proud of.”
the project can still be appealed to the California Coastal Commission
confirm they have teamed up with legendary multi-Platinum Rockers STYX

“STYX + Friends” is set to take place October 9 – 11
“STYX + Friends” will feature two special performances by STYX with one being the last time the band will perform their hit Grand Illusion album in its entirety in 2025 along with all the hits
“Rockin’ in Paradise” brings a stellar line-up of iconic rock artists including Loverboy
“We are so excited to bring you Rockin’ in Paradise in Miramar Beach,” proclaims Tommy Shaw

Santa Barbara
there’s no better way to unwind on the so-called American Riviera than Rosewood Miramar Beach
the all-in-one luxury resort offers a serene guests-only beach
multiple swimming pools and a suite of compelling dining
While it can’t be ignored that the tracks of Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner separates the beachfront areas from the main portion of the resort
interrupting foot traffic at all hours of the day
the sounds luckily don’t carry over to the garden bungalow suites—though I can’t speak for the experience at Rosewood’s oceanfront view rooms
Rosewood’s five-star service is on display here
from welcome bonbons in your room to on-demand golf carts to take you around the resort
if accessibility needs (or simply a case of aching feet) require
The manicured grounds and clapboard detailing invoke an East Coast flavor of Americana
plus the library-themed Manor Bar and Edomae-style omakase bar AMA Sushi
hidden around the lily pads floating atop the manmade pond
You could enjoy a relaxing vacation here in high style without ever leaving its grounds by unwinding at Sense Spa
where massage therapists and aestheticians offer body and skin treatments inspired by native flora along the Santa Barbara coastline
The adults-only Cabana Pool offers a quieter option for sunbathing and swimming
while the all-ages Manor Pool offers bright yellow-and-white striped umbrellas and on-site ice cream and burger shack: the ideal place to take kids and bask in the Southern California sunshine
Rosewood Miramar offers complimentary chairs
The resort’s falconer even keeps away seagulls and pigeons.
While the Miramar Beach Bar and lobby-adjacent Manor Bar offer straightforward
well-executed bites and drinks at the usual eye-wateringly expensive resort prices
the hotel’s culinary star is undoubtedly Caruso’s
Rosewood Miramar’s Michelin-starred beachfront restaurant
the restaurant resembles the dining room of a swanky cruise ship
and outdoor tables have access to unobstructed oceanfront views
Chef Massimo Falsini offers a few different Cal-Italian tasting menus that make ample use of local seafood and seasonal produce
While the fare doesn’t hold a candle to the spirited Los Angeles fine dining scene a few hours down the coast
the beautiful setting and excellent pastas make for a wonderful evening
The hotel is conveniently located just off the 101 freeway
which allows for easy access to the rest of the Central Coast
It's also about a mile east of Montecito’s main drag
Most of Santa Barbara’s major attractions are about a 15 minute drive away
and the area’s closest wineries about an hour away
Montecito Country Mart: One of the closest shopping and dining areas
Among the outdoor mall’s dining highlights are Bettina
a wood-fired pizzeria that’s one of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara and Rori’s
an artisanal scoop shop serving some of the best ice cream in Southern California
Hot Springs Canyon Trail: A short
fairly strenuous hike that leads to a natural (read: quite sulfurous!) series of hot spring pools popular among locals—expect some older nudists and students on any given morning
Lotusland: A private tropical and subtropical home garden that’s open to the public via guided tours
The Miramar Beach Bar might offer views and the ocean breeze
but don’t skip out on drinks at the Manor Bar
where a cozy fireside atmosphere and a literary-inspired menu translate into the perfect nightcap

Mr. Hazard, let’s begin with your 1st point (MJ Vol. 30_40, October 3-10, 2024) that the Rosewood expansion will provide “Workforce Housing for Employees.” Yes
affordable Housing is GREAT but only when it’s available to the community at large
not for self-serving interests taking advantage of a poorly written bill; SB-330
let’s not forget a pool of 400 Miramar ONLY employees
That actually equates to income for the Miramar and increases its ability to find employees
Are we to believe this will reduce traffic and offset our carbon footprint
The reality is that the average occupancy would be 1.5 occupants
So more like 40 occupants of which 14 are not Miramar employees
Perhaps these additional affordable housing residents own cars too
But let’s get back to SB-330 which most people know nothing about
SB-330 was created to stimulate developers to build more affordable housing
unfortunately it falls far short of that important goal
Developers are clearly taking advantage of this poorly written bill creating high risks to those who live near their ill-planned projects
SB-330 gives CARTE BLANCHE to developers as it bypasses several important safety valves in the system by allowing developers to leap over important regulatory and watchdog entities such as the Coastal Commission
and here’s a big one – it creates shortcuts around the issues of PUBLIC SAFETY
The Miramar expansion would break local roads which are already overwhelmed.
We presently have a monster of a 101 freeway expansion in progress extending itself like a cancerous growth – 80% of our freeway ramps
that’s four out of the five in the immediate vicinity of the Miramar Hotel are closed
Over six detours alone have been documented on the SBROADS101 website
Automobile accidents are climbing every month!
And let’s also take a look at the “UNDERGROUND PARKING” so highly touted by Mr
Hazard and how it will truly impact PUBLIC SAFETY to construct it
It will require very large 10-ton capacity trucks to make over 2,600 trips to remove the volume of dirt required for this parking structure
Will they be easily accessing the freeway with their payloads of dirt and TOXIC asphalt
they will be tearing up our surface streets taking the local detours
contributing to TRAFFIC and a threat to PUBLIC SAFETY
Current Miramar parking overflow is interfering with emergency situations
evacuations and the ability for safety vehicles to get through our already narrow streets
Who is to be placed in charge of this critical traffic study
This again brings me to a very simple question: Is it even possible to do an accurate traffic report given the current condition of the 101 Freeway construction surrounding the area
it’s impossible to perform an essential and reliable traffic report until the 101 freeway construction is completed
all the road blockage from the construction
The even bigger question is why would the County allow the DEVELOPER to be in charge of producing this critical traffic report
It needs to be a peer reviewed traffic study
They can pay the County for a proper study to be done AFTER the 101 freeway expansion has finally been completed in 2026
Why are Team Caruso and their supporters in such a hurry to slam this through a system that was designed and developed over a decade to work
All of these well-proven checks and balances thrown out the window
A transparent forum for all of us who live here was completely
This system that was put in place long before Caruso and his team arrived in Santa Barbara
The heavy hitters at Caruso and associates commuted here
So why would they have the best interests of our community in mind when in reality they are not a part of our community
The real truth here is: it’s all about the bottom line
profit – and I would not exclude the County too from this statement
and retail tax money revenues should this expansion be approved in its entirety; including luxury apartments – and let’s not forget Mr
We are talking 22 SHOPS in total after 12 more are added to the already burgeoning 10 retail shops
Under the guise of providing Affordable Housing (# for Itself)
if granted its wish the Rosewood expansion would set a precedent for the malling (and mauling) of Montecito
Add your event.
the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission approved a proposed expansion at the Rosewood Miramar Beach
The decision follows an agreement Wednesday between Caruso
the company that manages the luxury hotel that opened in 2019
and All Saints by-the-Sea Episcopal Church
"We are delighted by today’s unanimous approval of our plan for The Miramar by the County PlanningCommission
and deeply grateful to the hundreds of neighbors and community members who helpedshape our plan over the past two years," stated a press release from Caruso issued Friday after the Planning Commission's approval
our communities and our employees hasalways been at the heart of our work at Caruso
and this plan will better enable us to do all three."
The proposal still includes plans to add 26 affordable employee apartments
The proposal was not without its detractors who voiced their concerns during a presentation of the development during a Montecito Association Board meeting in May
"We are very concerned about the potential development we don't want views to be blocked and we don't want Beverly Hills here in Montecito," said Pamela Jameson Boehr during the May meeting
The approved request by the property's owner
now clears the way for the negotiated development plan
"We’re extremely proud of our plan for The Miramar
which was carefully designed to meet the long-term needs of our employees as well as the Montecito community," said Rick Caruso
"I sincerely thankthe many residents who have given us their support and their trust
and I appreciate the work of AllSaints Church in reaching a mutually acceptable agreement
We are eager to move forward and bringthis remarkable plan to life."
