Authorities are investigating a deadly fire that broke out early Tuesday morning at a group home in Mission Bend
leaving one man dead and two others injured
Fire officials have confirmed that the blaze was not caused by a heating-related issue
According to the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office
the fire started at the back of the house around 1:30 a.m
Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause
said she and her boyfriend were awakened by the flames and screaming
They rushed over to the home and saw a 17-year-old girl standing outside in a panic
referring to the individuals outside the home
“They were outside screaming and crying for the person still inside.”
while the teens tried to reach their parents and caseworkers
it hurt so much to see that happen to them” she said
and pulled two people from inside the home
Officials said one person suffered minor burns on their hands
Records show that the house was registered as a group home under Texas' Home and Community Support Program
Neighbors say the property had recently changed ownership
The home’s previous longtime resident passed away earlier this month
and his son reportedly sold the property to investors who turned it into a group home
One couple who assisted the teens said they helped one of them contact her parents and the group home agency representative
She called her mom and she called the agency lady for the group home”
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity
but neighbors believe he was a young adult in his early twenties
The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to confirm those details
The cause of the fire remains under investigation

But he wasn’t entered until I went back and spoke with a different detective,” Mapp explained
“It wasn’t until then that it got escalated

Mapp shared her frustrations with the response from law enforcement
“The Fort Bend County Sheriff is treating it like a runaway case

PASADENA, Texas – A Pasadena used car lot is the subject of a dozen civil lawsuits filed by customers who claim the dealership swindled them and lied about the quality of the vehicle they were buying
Strawberry Road Auto Sales bills itself as “your trusted source for high-quality used cars
if you ask any of the customers now suing the car lot
We came across the alleged fraudulent wrongdoing thanks to a tip to the Click2Houston.com Help Desk
Alicia Butler reached out to KPRC 2’s Gage Goulding for help getting back a $1,500 down payment for a vehicle she never even got to see
When Goulding and Photojournalist Oscar Chavez went undercover to check out the car buying process and later identified themselves as journalists
the salesman invited them inside to meet the manager
That’s when Estrada assaulted both Goulding and Chavez
doesn’t have a squeaky-clean record either
According to court records obtained by KPRC 2 News
a dozen lawsuits have been filed against Strawberry Road Auto Sales in the last few years
They all have their own respective complaints
but most boil down to the same point - customers were lied to when they bought a vehicle
persuaded and pressured to buy extended warranties
all for vehicles that were junk from the starting line
the customer was asked to pay several thousand dollars for a down payment on a 2015 Kia Sportage that wasn’t even on the lot
the windshield was cracked and the car wouldn’t drive faster than 60 miles per hour
Another lawsuit claiming the internal components of the vehicle were tampered with and the car wasn’t safe to drive anymore
the car lot is accused of rolling back the odometer or trying to erase miles from the car
Each of these lawsuits claim Strawberry Road Auto Sales sold vehicles knowing there was something wrong and his the issues intentionally
The problem isn’t just at their Pasadena location
According to lawsuits and state records obtained by KPRC 2 News, there’s a sister car lot in the Mission Bend area - Koncept Motor Cars
The business operates under a different name
but is a subsidiary of Strawberry Road Auto Sales
Vehicles are being sold to customers who would’ve never bought the vehicle in the first place if they knew it would immediately break down
Just like Alicia Butler, whose message to the Click2Houston.com Help Desk
Gage Goulding: “What would you like to see happen to that business?”
Alicia Butler: “They need to be closed down
They need to be shut down because you took my money.”
That’s because the victim and the business settled outside of court

MISSION BEND
Laishanna Bledsoe-Spivey is relieved to see envelopes inside
since the Greens at Brentwood apartments have been hit by mail thieves three different times in the past month
The apartments are near Mission Bend and considered affordable housing
Apartment management said thieves stole clothing and iPhones from neighbors’ mailboxes
Bledsoe-Spivey said a thief activated a credit card that was stolen from a man’s mailbox
“His credit card was run up almost $900 at a Shell station
They stole from a hardworking man that came home after working many long hours to find that he had been robbed,” Bledsoe-Spivey said
KPRC 2 obtained surveillance from the apartments showing the last three thefts
The video shows two men walk up to the mailboxes
One man works the lock and manages to unlock multiple mailboxes
They both gather dozens of pieces of mail before walking away
surveillance showed a woman fidgeting with the lock on the mailbox
Both of them are accused of taking off with neighbors’ mail
a woman who looks strikingly similar to the woman in the video of the second attack shows up and breaks into the mailboxes by opening the locks
Both of them gather mail before taking off in their getaway car
Bledsoe-Spivey was spared during this rash of theft
thieves stole her packages from the same mailbox with her children’s back-to-school clothes
They have no regard for people just trying to make it
This is not a community that can handle loss,” she said
Apartment managers said the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is providing extra patrols to the area
KPRC 2 reached out to the sheriff’s office to see if the thefts are connected or if any suspects have been identified
A spokesperson said they are looking into KPRC 2′s request
Those with any information are asked to contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665

The Mission Bend Club actually opened in late 2020

“We’re already nearing 200 kids using the facility every day,” Hattery said
Work on the newest club began just before the pandemic struck in early 2020
Precinct 2 County Commissioner Grady Prestage said
The county funded the project through a County Assistance District along state Highway 6
under which an extra 1 percent sales tax on each sale went toward funding different projects
The club sits on 11 acres of land Fort Bend County purchased several years earlier to house the $5.7 million Mission Bend Library branch that opened in 2019
Fort Bend County in recent years has seen an explosion of growth of Boys & Girls Clubs
many of which have been steered into existence by Prestage
The first location in Fort Bend County opened in 2000 and two more have opened in the years since
and a fifth is set to open in Rosenberg in 2022
The other existing clubs are the Fort Bend Club
The Boys & Girls Clubs have 4,000 registered members in Fort Bend County and a daily attendance between 800 and 1,000 across the four clubs
just under 200 children have been attending the Mission Bend Club programs
The facility has a maximum capacity of about 250
Under the terms of the partnership between the nonprofit organization and Fort Bend County
the county owns the Mission Bend Club building and the group operates it
The county pays between $300,000 and $350,000 to fund operations at the club
That operating budget is currently funded through the assistance district
but the county may one day have to pay for it directly
Because the county covers so much of the operating cost
children pay just $30 per year for a membership to the club
more than 30,000 children between the ages of 6 and 17 attend after-school and summer programs at clubs across the Houston region
The bakery’s colorful outpost in Mission Bend will debut new Asian-style pastries alongside its bevy of Latin-baked classics
Houston bakery El Bolillo has had a momentous year
celebrating 25 years of selling some of the most iconic Latin baked goods in the city
and it’s finishing off the year on a high note — with the opening of its newest location in Houston’s Westside
The bakery opened its fourth and largest outpost in Mission Bend at 6766 S Texas 6
welcoming pastry aficionados to explore its 12,000 square feet of space and warm up with a cafe de olla on its outdoor patio — a first for any El Bolillo location
Though the restaurant will continue with its tradition of freshly baking and serving around 100 variations of Latin pastries daily
including pan dulce and decadent treats like its iconic tres leches and custom-made cakes
owner Joel Garza says the Mission Bend bakery is hoping to offer something a little different than the other outposts
Working to fill a void for Latin baked goods on the Westside, the new El Bolillo will also tap into the culture of the surrounding neighborhood, serving Asian-style pastries as an ode to the community and its third largest ethnic population, which is Asian, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
The restaurant will celebrate with grand opening specials starting in the New Year
El Bolillo’s Mission Bend location is open from 6 a.m

Texas – The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a day care bus hit a 7-year-old girl near Mission Glen Elementary
where surveillance cameras from nearby homes showed the bus hit and drag the second-grader
"I'm so grateful my child survived this incident," Savannah's mother
"Looking at the footage of the accident one would assume it was fatal but God has the last decision and that was to live."
according to their account of what police told them
the driver of the "KIDS R KIDS" bus said she wasn't in a school zone and wasn't speeding
Home surveillance cameras show the accident happened just inside the school zone and during school zone hours
The video appears to show that the bus does not slow down as it enters the school zone
"KIDS R KIDS of Richmond prides itself on the safety and security of all children," the company said in a statement
"We hold the well-being of all children as our primary concern."
"We are keeping the child in our prayers while we continue our internal investigation," the statement concluded
A company spokesperson said the bus driver is on leave during the investigation
Among the dozen or so bystanders who rushed to help Savannah after the accident was Luula Jaylani
a student nurse at the University of Houston who lives next door
"I was inside praying and I just heard the impact and I heard screaming," Jaylani said
"I just did what I was taught to do in school; I stabilized her neck
and then I kept pressure on the bleeding and I just listened to her heart."
The first person to run to Savannah's side was her older brother

But that's changed.HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The morning of January 13 began like so many others for Mary Lou Nimmons
"I texted him at 9:30 just to say good morning
and little did I know this was happening," said Nimmons
What Nimmons didn't know was that morning
Leal had driven to his Misson Bend-area home to get some personal items
Leal got in an argument with his estranged wife Jessica outside their house
Investigators say Jessica Leal's boyfriend
Court records show Jessica Leal allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife to threaten her husband
investigators believe Leal held her husband down on the ground with the knife
They say that's when Leal's boyfriend Avery Jones allegedly shot and killed Chevey Leal
"He left a very big hole in our lives," said Nimmons
"Not only for my family but for his children."
Jessica Leal was only questioned on January 13
Court records show Jones was charged murder two days later
She publically mourned her husband's death
Leal was arrested and charged with her husband's murder
"I don't even know the emptiness he left us with
but it's not going to bring my brother back," said Nimmons
