(WLBT) - A controversial zoning ordinance measure that was initially passed has now been rescinded
This development is coming from the Rankin County Board of Supervisors meeting that was held on Monday
This decision comes after many Rankin County residents voiced their concerns on social media and at a public meeting on May 1st
and supervisors admit they made a mistake and hope this decision can move the county forward
”We realize that it wasn’t the best interest for the community and we made a bad decision and we’ll learn from it
But the key thing here is everybody coming together
They handled it well and we listened to them
we learn from our mistakes and we’re going to move forward,” District 1 Supervisor Sid Scarbrough said
The new zoning ordinance took effect <a href="https://www.wlbt.com/2025/04/17/what-have-they-done-value-that-home-new-zoning-ordinance-rankin-county-impact-mobile-home-owners/" target="_blank">on April 15</a>
impacting Rankin County mobile home owners greatly in some residential and agricultural zoning
those in agricultural zoning always had a permitted use
and mobile homes had to be less than seven years old
Last week, over 350 residents throughout Rankin County came together <a href="https://www.wlbt.com/2025/05/02/hundreds-attend-public-meeting-surrounding-new-zoning-ordinance-rankin-county/" target="_blank">Thursday night</a> to discuss the new zoning ordinance that went into effect
Supervisor Sid Scarbrough posted on Facebook that passing the ordinance was a “mistake,” and revealed his intentions to suggest the ordinance be rescinded
The previous ordinance in its entirety was reinstated in its initial form

that’s a thing — have sprung up in parts of Boston
especially around Mattapan’s Harambee Park
Walk down Talbot Avenue on a sunny day and there’s a good chance you’ll see five to 10 vendors in contractor vans
To many neighbors, the vans are noisy nuisances, and as their numbers have grown, so have complaints to the city. “They are running a car detailing business using a loud generator on weekends and nights,” <a href="https://311.boston.gov/tickets/101005973148" target="_blank" rel="">one</a> resident reported to 311
“Illegal car wash services being performed with god knows what going into the drain system and thus the harbor,” <a href="https://311.boston.gov/tickets/101005873068" target="_blank" rel="">said another</a>. “Black van parked for over two months, operating a car wash, and blocking multiple parking spots. Do something!” <a href="https://311.boston.gov/tickets/101005792641" target="_blank" rel="">said yet another</a>
The city seems to have heard the message; officials told the Globe editorial board that they would be cracking down on the vans this spring and summer
But they should also give the businesses a chance to go legit
as long as the operators are willing to obey some common-sense rules around noise
Like food trucks when they first burst on the scene almost two decades ago
car washes are clearly meeting a market demand in an innovative way
Customers seem to be happy with their services — without the subscription model that many brick-and-mortar car washes are now hawking
As one vendor outside of Harambee Park put it bluntly: “I used to sell drugs
Does the city want me to do that instead?”
Car wash activity isn’t confined to Talbot Avenue
Boulevard in Roxbury and near the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Devon Street
the number of people working in the mobile car washing business appears to have exploded
Google Maps photos from 2023 show only one vendor along the Talbot Avenue hub
a stretch where the Globe counted eight on a recent afternoon
Most of the complaints about mobile car washes end up with no citations
because there are no specific regulations for mobile car washes in Boston
as its rules are focused on brick-and-mortar establishments
Other rules could be reconfigured for mobile car washes
like the permits and licenses for food trucks or general business certificates
Proper regulation could go a long way toward fixing the issues reflected in 311 complaints
though vendors seem to be taking some welcome steps on their own
Many operators travel with their own water totes
so they don’t have to hook up to city water from the street
Some use professional-grade cleaners and soaps
the same ones used by traditional car washes
The most challenging piece of the puzzle is the environmental impact
The concentrated soaps and shampoos used to clean cars aren’t great for waterways
But they’re a smaller problem than what’s on the cars themselves
and exhaust residues wash directly into the stormwater system
This impact is nearly impossible to mitigate
which is why brick-and-mortar car washes have water recycling systems
It’s hard to remember now, but not too long ago food trucks were a new and, to some, strange addition to street life. But the city, and the truck operators, have turned them into an accepted niche industry. 
Officials said that any effort to shut down car washes this summer will also include plenty of education, training, and outreach to vendors. But they should be willing to listen, too, and look for ways to preserve a service that many residents obviously value.

Idaho — The Boise County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly fire late Sunday night that destroyed a mobile home and killed a 15-year-old boy near Garden Valley
Authorities say the teen was the grandson of the mobile home’s owners
Police received the emergency call just after 10 p.m
They determined that the fire grew to its size due to a nearby propane tank
The area was cleared by police just before 11 a.m

A fire destroyed a mobile home on Broadway in Raynham Sunday night
According to a <a href=https://news.jgpr.net/2025/05/05/raynham-fire-department-extinguishes-mobile-home-fire-on-sunday-night/ data-type=link data-id=https://news.jgpr.net/2025/05/05/raynham-fire-department-extinguishes-mobile-home-fire-on-sunday-night/>written statement </a>from the Raynham Fire Department
two women who lived in the home at 1540 Broadway were transported by ambulance to Morton Hospital in Taunton
The Enterprise spoke to <a href=https://raynhamfd.com/chiefs-corner/ data-type=link data-id=https://raynhamfd.com/chiefs-corner/>Raynham Fire Chief Bryan LaCivita</a>
He said both residents were sent to the hospital for evaluation
"One resident had her clothing burned and may have received first-degree burns," LaCivita said
LaCivita said the fire department responded to a call reporting the fire and arrived on scene at 10:23 p.m

which may be used to contact them directly

HANCOCK COUNTY — A critical service in Hancock County is expanding its free mental health resources to reach a population they told WRTV has been struggling in recent years
Hancock Health’s Mobile Response Team will now begin serving Hoosiers as young as five years old
The unit housed in the <a class="Link" href="https://www.hancockhealth.org/wellness-education/connection-center/" data-cms-ai="0">Hancock County Health Connection Center</a> in Greenfield consists of trained clinicians
They dispatch trained specialists directly to Hoosiers
who may not be able to come to the Connection Center in person
to connect them with services for mental health or substance misuse
“Our hope is that we can decrease those calls for mental health or substance misuse to law enforcement and provide them with help and care in their own home environment,” said Christina DeWitt
a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who manages the Connection Center and the Mobile Response Team
they have served more than a thousand adult Hoosiers in crisis
or whether they were actually calling 911 or law enforcement,” DeWitt explained
A study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness indicated that 85% of people who were helped by an MRT member received an intervention rather than a hospitalization
A mobile crisis team can often save money by reducing hospitalizations and incarcerations for people who are struggling with substance misuse or mental health distress
Now the team will be able to serve Hoosiers ages five and up
“We have noted a significant concern and a gap for serving youth,” DeWitt said
According to a youth risk behavior survey from the CDC
nearly 1 in 4 Indiana High school students reported having made a plan to commit suicide
More than 1 in 6 reported having attempted suicide

Kennedy himself had worked for 13 years at the family business Gulf Supply Co
where he was born and raised and was ready for a more personal entrepreneurial endeavor
When he stopped on the way home to buy a frozen Frios (the Spanish word for cold) at a stand
he felt immediate happiness and a return to childhood
He ended up in 2018 buying 3 brick and mortar stores in Pensacola
But Kennedy had an insight that would lead to changing Frios’s business model
franchise owners had “some mobile carts for events
but the focus of the business was to bring people into the stores,” he explains
When Covid struck and most people stayed inside their houses or apartments
Kennedy realized that Frios “was a business that comes to people rather than waiting for them to come to us.”
He also came to the conclusion that it was an “events-based business
It’s a lot easier to go to an event with a captive audience of 1,000 individuals than getting 1,000 individuals to walk into your store.” Having a retail store meant owners were paying people to open up
but “people may not walk in or buy pops,” he points out
moving to predominantly mobile trucks and not actual retail stores
landlords were increasingly flexible about terminating leases
Moving to mobile trucks reduced costs for Frios’s franchisees in a variety of ways including: 1) Lower labor costs
5) No need for furniture and limited equipment
Kennedy says franchises have several options regarding the mobile trucks including buying
or renting but the majority uses its leasing program

As much as it takes space and strength to live with this system
there&#8217;s no denying it&#8217;s structurally sound
I&#8217;ve written the majority of this review using Aorus Master 18 AM8H&#8217;s keyboard and it performs well enough for a set of laptop keys
I do wish that Gigabyte made secondary functions on both the numpad and number keys transparent for the sake of illumination

while four drivers spread across the side and top push sound sideways and upwards

then you&#8217;ll be thankful to have these speakers on standby

SDR performance is expectedly great but the screen also offers a genuine HDR experience too
This in large part thanks to its 2,304 dimming zones
equating to an impressive 128 zones per inch
enhancing contrast by disabling portions of the backlight as necessary
It also supports Dolby Vision too but the number of games supporting this standard is far lower relative to films and shows on streaming services
Gigabyte claims its screen covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space in addition to boasting a peak brightness of 1,200nits
This isn&#8217;t quite the case according to my testing
It&#8217;s unclear what percent of a window this 1,200 metric comes from
but I&#8217;ve seen this panel get plenty-bright at 828nits in HDR
Contrast will never match the endless depth of self-emissive displays
Aorus Master 18 AM8H uses its &#8216;Balance Mode&#8217; power profile
There are several others available to choose from
Gigabyte provides tooltips that provide some clarification to their purpose and differences but there&#8217;s frustratingly no detail on how any of them affect CPU or GPU power limits
Using Balance Mode sets the laptop&#8217;s fan profile to &#8216;Performance&#8217; mode while plugged in and &#8216;Silent&#8217; on battery
choosing from a dropdown selection in GiMate software
as you can&#8217;t return to &#8216;Performance&#8217; mode while on battery for example
While I&#8217;d prefer to have the full selection available to me at all times
these default selections are at least appropriate for the use case
I&#8217;ve not amended any settings to show what an out-of-the-box experience with Aorus Master 18 AM8H is like
it&#8217;s worth noting that enabling Gigabyte&#8217;s &#8216;AI Boost II&#8217; feature can push performance a touch further via dynamic overclocks
At the heart of Aorus Master 18 AM8H is a Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU
While it falls just shy of flagship status
conceding the title to its sibling 285HX on account of a 100MHz difference in clock speeds
it&#8217;s so close that you&#8217;d struggle to notice the difference
Gigabyte affords Core Ultra 9 275HX up to 95W to play with
a welcome wad of watts above its 55W base TDP but short of its 160W maximum
While this theoretically leaves some performance on the table
few will fault its capabilities in this configuration when battery life is on the table
Comparing the scores above with desktop processors, Core Ultra 9 275HX finds itself rubbing shoulders with <a href="https://www.club386.com/amd-ryzen-5-9600x-vs-intel-core-i5-14600k/">Core i5-14600K</a>. Its multi core chops nicely exceed those of its predecessor, Core i9-14900HX, by 15% comparing results here to the <a href="https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/intel-core-i9-14900hx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geekbench 6 database</a>
Core Ultra 9 275HX is a dab hand at providing hardware acceleration for machine learning applications
but its included Neural Processing Unit (NPU) pushes its talents further
Running the same OpenVINO benchmark in Geekbench AI on CPU
it&#8217;s clear the specialist chip is best at handling FP16 and FP32 workloads
there are frameworks like ONNX that will benefit more from the grunt dedicated graphics provide but it&#8217;s great to have options
The right tool for the job isn&#8217;t always a sledgehammer
and by the same token sometimes efficiency trumps performance
This laptop&#8217;s made for gaming and that&#8217;s just what it&#8217;ll do
I&#8217;ll be exploring how Aorus Master 18 AM8H&#8217;s raster and ray tracing rendering chops stack up
both at its native QHD+ resolution as well as FHD+

Aorus Master 18 AM8H rises to the occasion with flair
The laptop delivers impressive performance at its native QHD+ resolution using the highest settings in each game
with just Forza Motorsport proving the exception in an otherwise perfect streak of 60fps+ minimum and average frame rates
Dropping down to FHD+ naturally frees up the laptop to go even further beyond and properly flex its 240Hz panel
Earlier comparisons of RTX 5090 Mobile to RTX 5070 hold true but this is plenty of firepower for QHD+ gaming
That&#8217;s not forgetting the healthy 24GB frame buffer this GPU has its disposal
allowing it to easily handle higher resolution textures and effects unlike the desktop card
RTX 5090 Mobile has DLSS 4 up its proverbial sleeve to increase frame rates via upscaling and/or frame generation
The suite can provide welcome performance boosts in a large library of games that&#8217;s ever-growing
but is a must for path tracing workloads including Cyberpunk 2077&#8217;s RT Overdrive mode
RTX 5090 Mobile can&#8217;t muster playable frame rates at QHD+ but manages an acceptable 39fps dropping down to FHD+
Engaging DLSS Super Resolution both resolutions become viable
Given that this GPU can run Nvidia&#8217;s higher-quality Transformer model without penalty
I&#8217;d happily drop from &#8216;Quality&#8217; to &#8216;Balanced&#8217; to bring QHD+ up to speed
An ideal experience with frame generation calls for a base frame rate of at least 60fps to keep latency in check
FHD+ in combination with DLSS Quality meets this requirement
allowing me to supercharge average frame rates all the way up to 226fps
This doesn&#8217;t feel the same as native 226fps but greatly improves motion clarity
the 32GB of DDR5 in this laptop can only run at a maximum of 4,800MT/s
This same limitation also applies to models that arrive with 64GB of capacity

Still, if speed is your priority then there&#8217;s nothing stopping you slotting in a <a href="https://www.club386.com/samsung-9100-pro-4tb-review-cool-lean-and-speedy/">Samsung 9100 Pro</a> or other bleeding-edge drive

Instead they appear to be OEM models from Kingston (SSD #1) and Gigabyte (#2)
it&#8217;s clear they&#8217;re not on equal footing
This isn&#8217;t necessarily a bad thing but Gigabyte puzzlingly places Windows on the slower drive

It makes far more sense to make the faster NVMe the primary storage and use the other as a secondary solution
the idea of managing storage on a laptop this expensive doesn&#8217;t feel appropriate
I&#8217;d personally prefer Aorus Master 18 AM8H come with a single SSD that offered both ample speed and space
Aorus Master 18 AM8H generally manages temperatures and noise well
under certain circumstances its CPU can put a small dampener on proceedings
Its &#8216;Performance&#8217; fan profile only kicks in once the CPU reaches 45°C spinning at 20% speed
it will aggressively ramp up and becomes impossible to ignore at 61db
Such a ceiling only occurs when the processor kicks up a fuss
with GPU-heavy scenarios peaking at a more reasonable 54db
It&#8217;s easy to see why since Core Ultra 9 275HX gets hot and sweaty to the tune of 88°C under the duress of Cinebench 2024
at 66°C pumping out frames in Cyberpunk 2077
there&#8217;s no way to customise these fan profiles or create your own
Competitors like Razer Blade 18 provide the means to do this
and the absence of such functionality here is odd
Given the calibre of components inside Aorus Master 18 AM8H
it should come as no surprise that battery life isn&#8217;t a massive priority for this laptop
Gigabyte fits the system with a 99Whr cell
so there&#8217;s plenty of &#8216;leccy in its reserves to pull from but hungry hardware can quickly transform plentiful powerful into a pittance
Running PCMark10&#8217;s &#8216;Gaming&#8217; battery life test
the laptop managed to keep on ticking for 1hr and 48mins
which Aorus Master 18 AM8H will advise you disable while running on battery
Doing so will improve uptime but will naturally lead to significantly worse gaming performance
I&#8217;m able to squeeze five or six hours of use on a single charge
Running Procyon&#8217;s one hour office benchmark lines up with this
as the laptop lost around 18% charge per hour
Note these numbers come from using the CPU&#8217;s integrated graphics and running the display at 60Hz
which switches automatically while running on battery
but Aorus Master 18 AM8H does prove the exception in many respects
Games look and play brilliantly on its large Mini LED screen
serving as a spectacular showcase of the internal hardware&#8217;s capabilities
and other video content similarly looks fantastic to the point that it&#8217;s easy to forgive the small shortcomings of the laptop&#8217;s speakers
Niggles like SSD management and temperamental acoustics do leave some room for improvement
but they&#8217;re certainly not deal breakers
Gigabyte can theoretically remedy the latter issue with an update to its GiMate software
but there&#8217;s no sign of that for the moment
Were I in the market looking to splurge around £4,000 / $4,000 on a gaming laptop
I&#8217;d certainly place Aorus Master 18 AM8H on my shortlist if not outright buy it
There are configurations of the BZH SKU available with 64GB of RAM for some extra cash
but I&#8217;d recommend most prospective buyers stick with 32GB options
