The Town of Moncks Corner and Berkeley County jointly purchased the nearly 5-acre Epson Oaks Plantation for $1.2 million on April 9
The Epson Oaks property is known for its historic trees
some of which Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton said are hundreds of years old
The town and county collaborated to purchased the Epson Oaks Property in Moncks Corner with plans for future public use
The town of Moncks Corner and Berkeley County together have purchased 4.76 acres they intend to preserve and develop for a public park
They paid $1.2 million April 9 for the site
The land is significant for its historic oak trees — with some dating back 500 years, said Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr
The site also played a role in the Revolutionary War
and the new owners have plans to incorporate that element into the redevelopment
The county will tap funding from its Greenbelt Program to cover its half of the cost
The county's role will be to manage all activities necessary to implement and construct the park project with assistance from the Berkeley 250 Committee
previously owned the property near Highway 52 and Epson Planation Drive
It purchased the land for $550,000 in 2019
"It’s either we stepped up to buy it or someone buys it and wants to build a business and requests the trees be taken down."
Hamilton said the goal is to get the park up and running by next year to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War
"We want to really have something that pops from the road," Hamilton said
"A nice water feature or statue or something that says this is a historic park
One of the ideas is you would come up and have a code to scan with your phone and you can learn the history as you walk around."
Hamilton wants to add a walking trail system throughout the site
The county is also working to procure additional park properties through the Greenbelt Program
which is funded through a penny-sale tax that voters approved November 2022 to pay for land projects totaling almost $59 million

Sean Holmes explaining the layout of Fireside SC
He and his wife are planning to open the restaurant in July
at 411 Corner Square Plaza in Moncks Corner
is currently filled with shiny new stainless steel appliances scattered around and yet to be placed in their permanent spots
co-owner Sean Holmes was wrangling a massive stove into the corner of what would be his kitchen
Although he has never owned a restaurant before
he knows what to expect and is ready for the challenge he moved to Berkeley for
“I was a corporate chef for a large restaurant group in New Jersey and was there for just about 10 years,” Holmes said
“We had 11 restaurants and four different concepts
We moved here about a year ago and came down here hoping to open a restaurant.”
Holmes admits he has been a foodie since childhood and likes cooking for his dad and brother
He recalled being a six-year-old kid making dinner his interest in cooking was sparked very early
He says he is now in love with the industry and wants to put his spin on it while cultivating a community spirit
We are a family and want to bring that sense of community to the restaurant
We want to grow with the community that is important to us
That is one of the reasons we came down here in the first place
they don’t put much emphasis on the community,” he said
Holmes adds that when he and his wife first came south
it’s about showing the future what he can do
He has a flare for Italian with flavors of French
“Our focus will be 12-inch pizzas and share plates
But we are highlighting our pizzas and small plates
We gather around a table with family and friends
His goal is to bring people together in a comfortable atmosphere
And it won’t be long before the doors open
He and his wife are planning to open Fireside SC sometime in July
He said he will be hosting a job fair to attract some people
and he is counting on some of his fellow chefs from New Jersey to suit up at his new eatery
