The Morgan County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a zoning change for 390 acres of farmland in Monrovia for a controversial proposed data center
Despite intense opposition from Monrovia community members
the board voted unanimously for the rezoning
Board member Don Adams said he and his colleagues had to consider the needs of the whole county
“There’s 65,000 people in the county that are going to be invested in it
but Monrovia will be invested in it probably most,” he said
Adams meant potential for more money for the county
But residents have concerns about the proposed data center’s noise levels
potential for property tax and home value disruption
and the overall secrecy surrounding the project

Morgan County Attorney Anne Cowgur reminded the commissioners and audience that the board’s approval is an early step in the development process and that a lot of details are subject to change
all those things do not meet the standards of these gentlemen who are standing up here and others at the County
then they won't approve the project,” she said

An information meeting about the project was Tuesday night at Monrovia Christian Church
That meeting came ahead of a public hearing before the plan commission at 6:30 p.m

MONROVIA MAN TO SERVE 17 YEARS IN THE DIVISION OF CORRECTIONS FOR FIRST DEGREE ASSAULT
the Honorable Judge Scott Rolle sentenced 46-year-old Christopher Kraft
Second Degree Assault and Neglect of a Child
A jury found Kraft guilty of these offenses following the conclusion of a three-day trial in Frederick Circuit Court on September 25
Judge Rolle sentenced the Defendant to 25 years on the First Degree Assault
suspending all but 17 years to serve in the Division of Corrections
he suspended a 15 year sentence on the Second Degree Child Abuse to run consecutively
Concurrent sentences were imposed on the Second Degree Assault and Neglect offenses
Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a request for a welfare check on a child
Deputies learned that just prior to their arrival
pulled the child to the ground and stood on the child’s stomach
Kraft also placed a lock on the outside of a door in order to lock the child in a room and failed to provide for the needs of the child
Further investigation revealed that in a prior incident
the Defendant threw water on the child and then pointed a firearm at the child
“Physical child abuse can be every bit as harrowing as sex abuse cases
This was a terrible assault by a terrible person on a child
ASA Pearl was able to achieve justice for this child and our community with this lengthy sentence.”
the Defendant will serve four years of supervised probation with a number of conditions
including having no contact with the victim

Print A few months after being toppled by a towering pine tree
a Monrovia home — or what’s left of it — is up for grabs for $499,999
The humble bungalow made headlines when it was crushed by a tree in May with two renters and two dogs inside
What’s left of the property looks like a postapocalyptic set piece complete with missing walls
Some would call it unsalvageable; listing agent Kevin Wheeler quipped that it’s an “open-concept floor plan.”
the home holds one bedroom and one bathroom in 645 square feet
but those are based on measurements taken before it was destroyed
Wheeler said the electricity is turned off
which the renters escaped through after the tree came down
Monrovia rules state that demolitions on properties more than 50 years old require a review. But since the house was destroyed by an act of God, a review isn’t required, according to Wheeler. So house-hunters can buy what’s left of the home and rebuild without dealing with some of the red tape typically required.
“There’s been a lot of interest so far because demand is so high and inventory, especially at this price, is so low,” Wheeler said.
He added that multiple people tracked down the homeowner with low-ball offers to buy the home days after it was crushed.
“They were trying to buy it for $250,000 or $300,000,” he said. “But market comparisons for similar properties in Monrovia put the value at $500,000.”

Los Angeles County’s Pathway Home program brought 52 people experiencing homelessness off the streets of Monrovia and Duarte and into safe interim housing where they will receive supportive services and other resources to help them transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing
“I’m pleased the County’s Pathway Home program has brought its well-coordinated outreach
and housing solutions to the streets of Monrovia and Duarte,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said
“A lot of work and planning goes into each Pathway Home operation so that people experiencing homelessness are helped in a compassionate manner that also reflects a firm commitment to clearing encampments
Public spaces must be clean and accessible to the community at large
and Pathway Home’s systematic approach works hard to meet that goal.”
plans with LA County employees before a Pathway Home operation
The Monrovia and Duarte operation is LA County’s 16th Pathway Home encampment resolution since the inception of the program in August 2023
More than 600 Los Angeles County residents have been brought indoors through Pathway Home
“The City of Monrovia has always held that interim housing solutions alone cannot solve homelessness
Individuals need additional support services
and even basic skill development like computer literacy,” Monrovia City Manager Dylan Feik said
individuals also need a pathway to permanent supportive housing
The Pathway Home Project has all of these necessary components.”
“The City of Duarte is grateful to Pathway Home
They are housing Duarte residents who have been living on the streets for five
They finally have a path to a permanent housing solution.”
The LA County Homeless Initiative collaborated with the Office of Supervisor Barger
the City of Monrovia and the City of Duarte to conduct the Pathway Home operation on June 5
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) and nonprofit service providers Union Station Homeless Services and Volunteers of America (VOA) were essential to bringing unsheltered residents indoors as they had built trusting relationships with them by providing engagement and support during their unhoused experience
VOA will continue to work with them at the motel operating as their interim housing location
The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health
and the Monrovia Police Department were also critical partners in the operation
Pathway Home is a Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative-led encampment resolution program that is a critical component of the County’s comprehensive response to the local emergency on homelessness adopted by the Board of Supervisors in 2023
By leveraging emergency powers and partnerships with local jurisdictions
Pathway Home is a full-circle solution that brings people off the streets
into immediately available interim housing accompanied by a comprehensive suite of supportive services
The Morgan County Planning Commission voted Monday to recommend a zoning change for 390 acres of farmland in Monrovia for a controversial proposed data center
Despite intense opposition at the meeting — and last week at a public hearing — the commission vote was 7-1
The rezoning petition now goes to the county commissioners
The developer and end user are unknown to the public because of a non-disclosure agreement
and how it will affect local property taxes and home values
“We are more than willing to work with the county and the developer to better understand this project
but we just plain need more information and more time to process,” said Monrovia Town Council President Tammy Everett

Commission member Dustin Frye emphasized that the commission’s role in the process is to consider the best possible use of the land for the county
this Commission's role has nothing to do with the finances
just best use with the (Unified Development Ordinance) and (comprehensive) plan,” he said
“And this is one step of many that's going to be overlapped as this process goes through
where more information will be revealed.”
Frye added that the development is just the beginning
“The state of Indiana is on a list of top five states ready for this type of infrastructure.”

Bears aside, Monrovia is a model city for humans. It has taken pains to preserve its past but also changed with the times, embracing a streak of whimsy. Its flatness makes it eminently walkable. And sure, it can get hot during summer, but that’s what throwing shade is for (courtesy of its mature trees). It’s also well-served by public transit.
Start your walk under the “Old Town Monrovia” sign at E. Walnut and S. Myrtle avenues. Monrovia is named after an early founder, William Monroe, and its main drag honors his daughter Myrtle (one of those classic girl names that has yet to come back in vogue).
Stroll four blocks north, lingering among Myrtle’s charming shops, restaurants and street sculptures. At 410 Myrtle Ave. is an “action” movie installation in front of a cinema, commemorating Monrovia’s countless cameos on the silver screen, where the designated All-America City often doubles as a homey American town in such fare as Legally Blonde, Never Been Kissed, and American Pie.
Across the street is “Painter Samson the Bear,” one of nine themed Samson statues around town that are decked out in different outfits, sometimes representing prominent Monrovians. (Authorities finally put a stop to Samson’s hot-tubbing ways and relocated him to the Orange County Zoo, where he had his very own hot tub, and lived to the ripe old age of 27.)
After recrossing Foothill, it’s six blocks back to your point of origin. Salute Monrovia’s latest Samson statue at the southeast corner of Myrtle and Foothill as you head back through Old Town. Donning a top hat and bow tie, the “Steve Baker bear” celebrates the town’s late, classy City Historian, who was instrumental in preserving many of the civic treasures you’ve just experienced.
