The Uruguayan capital flies under the radar
a rich musical and literary heritage and beachside barrios to discover

Montevideo has much in common with Buenos Aires
lying on the opposite side of the River Plate
tango and world-class steaks are all found here
though you’re more likely to see Montevideanos strolling around with a mate — a herbal tea made from the yerba mate plant — than a coffee
But spend some time in the Uruguayan capital
and you’ll soon discover that its draws go far beyond any similarities
The Ciudad Vieja (Old City) is its oldest and most atmospheric neighbourhood
it’s now a picturesque district of cobbled streets and plazas lined with sprouting palm trees
their walls covered with large murals and calligraphic graffiti tags
the modern presidential office and 19th-century palaces
museums and theatres of Plaza Independencia giving way to an expanse of shopping streets
a serpentine promenade winds along the coast past a series of wide
sandy beaches and barrios (neighbourhoods) such as Pocitos
whose modern apartment blocks gaze across the water and give this part of Montevideo the feel of a seaside resort
A UNESCO City of Literature — a status symbolised by a collection of gorgeous independent bookshops — Montevideo also has a rich musical heritage and is known as one of the two birthplaces of tango (alongside Buenos Aires)
The music and dance emerged from working class communities in the late 19th century and blends African
you can watch or take part at a multitude of clubs
ranging from glitzy professional shows to amateur street displays
The city is also intrinsically linked to another form of music and dance: candombe
Originating among the descendants of liberated African slaves and now recognised by UNESCO as part of Montevideo’s intangible cultural heritage
Featuring costumed dancers and a storytelling element
candombe is performed on the streets throughout the year
but is central to Montevideo’s famously long carnival
which runs between January and March with parades
But the city’s global profile looks set to rise in the coming years
as it’ll host the opening match of the 2030 FIFA World Cup
a century after staging the very first tournament
Palacio SalvoTowering over Plaza Independencia with sweeping views over the city
the Palacio Salvo — which combines a range of architectural styles from gothic to art nouveau — was briefly the tallest building in South America when it was completed in 1928
Guided tours provide an insight into this design curiosity
which sits on the site of the cafe where the legendary tango song La Cumparsita was written in 1916
Museo de Artes VisualesThis museum in Parque Rodó is home to a huge collection of paintings
ceramics and other works by Uruguayan artists
and is the largest of its kind in the country
Highlights include 19th-century depictions of gauchos and rural life in the Uruguayan pampas by painter Juan Manuel Blanes
The RamblaSnaking along Montevideo’s coastline for almost 14 miles
the Rambla is among the longest continuous sidewalks in the world
from the crumbling Ciudad Vieja to the beaches of Punta Carretas and Pocitos
it’s a popular spot with cyclists and families as well as visitors keen to get a flavour of the city
Estadio CentenarioBuilt to host the first World Cup in 1930 — which Uruguay won — the monumental Estadio Centenario (Centenary Stadium) is set to stage the opening match of the 2030 tournament
Its Museo del Fútbol (Football Museum) is home to a veritable treasure trove of memorabilia — such as shirts worn by Maradona and Pelé — and tickets include a tour of the hallowed stands
Castillo PittamiglioThis is arguably Montevideo’s oddest structure
art deco flourishes and mock-Tudor elements

this Ciudad Vieja stalwart was a haunt of the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano and has a wood-panelled interior that’s covered with black-and-white photos
Go for coffee and medialunas (doughy croissants) at breakfast
featuring staples such as gnocchi and ravioli — reflecting the fact that roughly 40% of Uruguayans have Italian heritage

this cafe-restaurant has a wide-ranging and ever-changing menu — expect dishes such as falafel with spicy aioli and beetroot and ricotta tart
including a standout passion fruit and coconut chiffon cake
Cabaña VerónicaThe pick of the parrillas (steakhouses) in the busy Mercado del Puerto
Cabaña Verónica serves expertly grilled steaks
and don’t miss the tender mollejas (sweetbreads)
Hotel PalacioOn the edge of the Ciudad Vieja
this excellent-value option retains many of the building’s turn-of-the-20th-century features
polished tiled floors and a scattering of vintage items such as antique telephones
The en suite rooms are simple but comfortable
with high ceilings and often private balconies
Hotel Costanero Montevideo — MGalleryLooking across the beach in the attractive riverside neighbourhood of Pocitos in southeast Montevideo
The rooms are all bright and spacious — many of those on the higher floors also have superb river views — and there’s even a small outdoor swimming pool
Alma Histórica Boutique HotelOn a Ciudad Vieja plaza
this intimate hotel is set in a restored 1920s townhouse
the classically styled rooms are each named after a noted Uruguayan figure
It’s worth paying extra for one with views of the glorious Palacio Taranco
an opulent mansion that now houses a gallery
Feria de Tristán NarvajaMost visitors are drawn to the Saturday antiques market in Plaza Matriz
but skip this in favour of the Feria de Tristán Narvaja
which offers a more authentic and better value experience
Taking place every Sunday in the central Cordón neighbourhood
it sells everything from fruit and clothes to jewellery and second-hand books
Woollen goodsFounded in the late 1960s to empower disadvantaged rural women in Uruguay, Manos del Uruguay is an NGO with 12 artisan cooperatives producing exquisite woollen goods
Bar Tabaré opened in 1919 as a hangout for fishermen and retains much of its original character.Photograph by Tali KimelmanAfter hoursPrimuseumA museum
this atmospheric Ciudad Vieja venue features more than 3,000 antiques — notably the 300-plus vintage Primus camping stoves
which nod to the business of the building’s former owner
as the evening performances take place around the handful of dining tables
Teatro SolísOpened in the 1850s
Uruguay’s premier concert hall was inspired by Italy’s leading theatres
and has more recent design flourishes from the likes of French luminary Philippe Starck
Guided tours of the building are also available
Bar TabaréOpened in 1919 as a cross between a general store and bar
Tabaré was originally a hangout for local fishermen
It’s since gained a more diverse clientele
while retaining much of its original character
The basement hosts regular performances by jazz
but want to get a taste of candombe music and culture
make a beeline for the southern Parque Rodó neighbourhood
in whose namesake park comparsas (troupes of drummers) often gather to rehearse on a Saturday evening
Practice sessions also regularly take place in the nearby neighbourhoods of Barrio Sur and Palermo
not least because of its signature mustard sauce — the recipe is a closely guarded secret

There are a few unusual things about Bodo/Glimt
They play in the Arctic Circle
They’re also the first Norwegian side to reach the semi-finals of a European competition
as they prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League
They’re also unusual in that their name features punctuation
It’s not every day you see a football club name with a slash in it: almost as if they’re inviting the reader to choose between Bodo and Glimt
The story behind the name is relatively straightforward
and initially simply went by the nickname Glimt
because another team in Norway had the same name
they incorporated the town and it was initially hyphenated — Bodo-Glimt
that became confusing in newspaper listings and on betting slips as people assumed it was referencing a game between two teams called Bodo and Glimt
so the slash was gradually more widely used until it became the official name of the club
Are they the only club with punctuation in their name
They’re not even the only men’s club with a slash in their name
the result of a merger between FC Eschen and FC Mauren in the 1960s
from a punctuation consistency point of view
And as longer-term followers of MLS will know
there used to be a slash in one of America’s most prominent clubs
the New Jersey-based New York Red Bulls ignore the geographic inaccuracy in their name but when they were established in 1994
they were much keener to ensure everyone knew where they’re from
while at the same time associating themselves with the nearby city that more people had heard of
they were the New York/New Jersey MetroStars but by 1998
that was deemed too cumbersome and they just went by MetroStars
while the men’s team in that area ditched their slash
While NJ/NY Gotham FC play in NJ and have “NJ” as part of their name
Their club badge features a depiction of the famously New York-based Statue of Liberty rather than something from New Jersey (like
I dunno… Satriale’s from The Sopranos) and they are almost exclusively just known as “Gotham”

Attaching a location to your club name can be a slightly tricky business
especially if the name you’ve thought of already is a location… just a location that’s nearly 7,000 miles away
were thinking about establishing a club in the early part of the 20th century
what better inspiration could they wish for than a successful club with which their city had cultural and economic ties
Liverpool Futbol Club was born but inevitably
confusion began to emerge with Liverpool Football Club
so while this isn’t technically included in their official name
there had to be some differentiation made for a more global audience
you’ll usually see them referred to as Liverpool FC (Montevideo)
There is a clutch of other clubs whose names have taken inspiration from another
so they need to clarify where they’re actually from
Botafogo (Paraiba) and Botafogo (Sao Paulo)
There are also various clubs named Al Ahly
many of whom geographically identify themselves with the help of parentheses
Maybe you’re irritated that technically most of these only apply to common usage
rather than the official names of the clubs
Look no further than Colo-Colo — or Club Social y Deportivo Colo-Colo
to use its Sunday name — the Chilean giants based in Santiago
They were named in honour of a tribal chief from the Arauco War
Pedants might be annoyed to learn that some sources omit the hyphen from the club’s name
possibly because the tribal chief in question is variously referred to as Colo Colo or Colocolo
Or possibly because few people really care about hyphens
the club’s official website goes with Colo-Colo
Here’s where you could really get into the weeds: do you count FC Barcelona
given that “FC” and “AC” and “AFC” are all initials
and that should usually trump restrictive linguistic rules
It’s less stupid with a couple of MLS clubs — D.C
Louis City — given that the full stops are part of how the names of their respective cities are styled
in the wide range of clubs whose names start with “1.FC”
which include but are not limited to 1.FC Koln
clubs are either the result of mergers or were one of several clubs in their particular town or city that have since gained primacy
so the “1.FC” is designed to signify that they were the first to be established in that area
there is only one football club with an exclamation mark in their name
there used to be: for any non-English readers
we promise that the seaside village of Westward Ho
is genuinely real and is genuinely written like that
and they really did have a football club called Westward Ho
they seem to have disappeared at some point in the 1990s
As we are yet to discover a football club with a semi-colon in their name
or quotation marks (which would just make them look sarcastic: “Paris” Saint-Germain
These include possessive apostrophes in clubs that are named after people or institutions — Newell’s Old Boys
an Englishman who was a pioneer of football in Argentina
named after a 19th-century independence leader of Irish descent
simply named after the place in southern England
the Senegalese team who got their name from French patron saint Joan of Arc
If you want to get awfully clever about things
there are other teams that have punctuation in their names without actually having punctuation in their names
But you’ve already read more than 1,000 words about punctuation

The French consortium Setec conducted a feasibility study for a passenger train connecting Montevideo and Florida
proposes two lines—Montevideo to 25 de Agosto and Montevideo to Progreso—using the Central Railway infrastructure with relatively low investment
Daily ridership is estimated at 19,500 to 37,700
with service frequencies of 20–30 minutes
Infrastructure upgrades include an additional platform at Canelones and a train garage at Carnelli
The train would save about 5 minutes per trip compared to current public transport
Setec recommends enhancing the Central Railway as a public transport backbone
with costs varying based on electricity prices
carried out after an agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Public Works
stated that daily ridership demand could vary between 19,500 and 37,700
With a UY$ 79 (slightly less than US$ 2) fare
while with a UY$ 45 (barely above US$ 1) fare
The study suggests that three trains each way per hour would be required to meet demand in the lowest fare scenarios
Each train would have a capacity of 516 passengers
frequency would be reduced to one or two trains per hour
the company highlighted comfort and security benefits

Uruguay's capital is home to one of the world's longest sidewalks
So often, a walk along the waterfront can be "a window into the soul of a city," said Mya Guarnieri in The New York Times
home to one of the world's longest sidewalks
meanders for 14 miles along the broad Río de la Plata
and "friends engrossed in conversations over cups of yerba mate." La Rambla is "essentially the city's outdoor living room" — especially when it's summer in the Southern Hemisphere and the entire population seems to tote folding chairs to the water's edge to enjoy the cooling breeze
Montevideo itself is "a flower-speckled city that melds Old World and modernist architecture," and La Rambla
ties together many of its disparate neighborhoods
As it winds from the portside Parque Capurro to the high-end Carrasco area in the east
On the first morning of my long weekend in Montevideo
I set out from the Palladium Business Hotel
adjacent to the fashionable Pocitos district
I spotted sailboats bobbing outside the century-old Yacht Club Uruguayo
the King of Fry Bread." And I paused at a granite plaque to read Sonnet to a Palm
by the celebrated local poet Juana de Ibarbourou
she likens a palm tree to her "eternal homeland."
"I claimed a prime spot in Montevideo's outdoor living room."

MINNEAPOLIS — The rules of basketball dictate that there are five players on the court for each team
The way the Breck School played on that end on Tuesday night
Montevideo head boys coach Derek Webb swore he saw six or seven Mustangs on the floor at times
That’s the kind of havoc Breck put the Thunder Hawks through for 36 minutes
you can watch on film but you can’t replicate it until you’re out there,” Webb said
“That’s the most difficult thing because you want your guys prepared for something like that
But it’s almost impossible to prepare unless you’re playing teams like that during the regular season
“It felt like at times you had seven guys on the court with how fast they were and how quick they were to the ball.”
That defensive intensity pushed the third-seeded Mustangs into the Class AA state semifinals with a 73-49 win over sixth-seeded Montevideo at the Target Center
“They were always in your grill,” said Montevideo sophomore guard Griffin Epema
“They never let you get a free set or anything
It was tough and they wear you down as the game goes on.”
Breck is the defending Class AA state champion
The Thunder Hawks face Pequot Lakes in the Class AA consolation semifinals at 8 p.m
In the other Class AA games at Williams Arena
Montevideo had an early advantage with a 16-5 run that was capped off by a Tosten Christenson corner 3-pointer that put the Thunder Hawks up 20-13
any Thunder Hawks run was met by an even bigger Mustangs run
scoring 17 of the next 19 points for a 30-22 Mustangs edge
Breck shot 56.7% from the field in the first half and 50.8% for the game
“It’s a 36-minute game and we know that,” said Mustangs head coach Harry Sonie
It might not be right away from the tipoff
but eventually that pressure will kind of get to you and wear you down
“Defense leading the offense is huge for us.”
getting seven steals and forcing the Thunder Hawks into 12 first-half turnovers
That helped build a 42-30 Mustangs lead at halftime
“We tried our best to get a weaker defender onto the guy bringing the ball up
which was Griffin most of the time,” said Montevideo junior guard/forward Brody Dack
they do a great job of getting up in your shorts.”
… That’s where everything is going to start falling behind it
scoring the first seven points of the second half to put the deficit at 42-37
a layup from Jackson Koenen and a post-up bucket by Gannon Reidinger
“Keep playing hard was the biggest thing,” said Reidinger
“Keep playing our basketball and not having them make us adjust to how they’re playing.”
That’s as close as the Mustangs let it get
Breck got two layups from Newton and another by Waleed Muhammad to go ahead 48-37
That was the start of a 14-2 run that ended when DeAngelo Dungey scored on a floater with 9:27 to play to make it 56-39
Waleed Muhammad led the Mustangs with 18 points
Newton had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds
we don’t take it for granted,” Newton said
“We’re hoping to win it (the state championship).”
“We played (Waseca) last year in the quarterfinal game
I’m guessing it’s a very similar team — expecting zone

MINNEAPOLIS — Preparation for state began almost immediately for the Montevideo boys basketball team once the seedings were announced Saturday
talk already was focused on the Breck Mustangs
who play the Thunder Hawks in the Class AA quarterfinals at 8 p.m
"It's been a whirlwind," Montevideo head coach Derek Webb said
The Thunder Hawks (25-4) won the Section 3AA title Thursday by beating Jackson County Central 62-61 in Marshall
That gave Webb and his staff a day to watch video and formulate a game plan
talented Breck squad that has several key players back from the Mustangs' Class AA championship team that went 31-1 in 2024
a 6-foot-2 guard playing for the Wisconsin Badgers
who earned a third seed in the NCAA tournament Sunday
This year's Breck squad has played a similar schedule and is 19-10
But the losses have come to Class AAAA schools Sauk Rapids
Louis Park and Edina and Class AAA programs Benilde-St
Wins include victories over Minnehaha Academy and Minneapolis North
and Wisconsin powers La Crosse Central and Wisconsin Lutheran
Minnehaha Academy is the in the Class AA quarterfinals
Mankato East and Totino-Grace are in the Class AAA quarters and Wayzata and Apple Valley are in the AAAA tournament

"They're kind of a hard team to replicate in a practice," Webb admitted
Webb figures the Mustangs will play man-to-man defense and likely try to full-court press
It'll put added pressure on Montevideo guards Griffin Epema and Adam Van Binsbergen
Starters Brody Dack and Jackson Koenen must be key contributors
The Thunder Hawks may try to slow down the tempo and switch things up defensively
"I think for us — you've got to be honest with yourself — I don't know if the man-to-man match-ups will be there," Webb said
Webb said he expect a big crowd to follow the Thunder Hawks to Minneapolis
He said there was a buzz at the program's well-attended fundraiser Saturday
It's Montevideo's first state tournament trip since 2009
The Thunder Hawks also made it in '08 and 1924
"Our community support has been fantastic," Webb said
There's really a lot of support for our team."

A former school bus driver for Montevideo Public Schools has been charged with possessing and disseminating child pornography
According to a criminal complaint filed in Chippewa County
a Montevideo investigator was notified on Dec
5 that the Minnesota BCA received cyber tips about child pornography
was posing as a 14-year-old boy and interacted with a Kik account determined to be Norton
The Kik account sent a photo of himself that was identified as Norton using his driver’s license and from body camera footage from when Montevideo officers interacted with him
Norton then sent child pornography to the undercover deputy via Kik and Snapchat
He also said he had previously met with a 14-year-old on Grindr and they “had sex.”
The undercover deputy got a search warrant for the Snapchat account
which came back with Norton’s phone number
investigators found an account with photos of Norton using a different name
the Facebook page states the user is a school bus driver at East Central Bus Service
Investigators spoke with Norton at East Central Bus Service’s garage in Montevideo
He said he believed someone had gotten into his Snapchat because minors kept adding him on there
He claimed that he deleted them when he found out their age
Norton also said the Facebook account using a different name was his and the name he used was from when he was going to be adopted a few years ago
Court documents state that Norton admitted to using Grindr and he had once spoken to someone claiming to be 17
He was then called by a North Carolina number — the person said that if Norton paid for their child’s counseling
He added that he deleted his Grindr account and changed his phone number and told investigators he now reports minors to Grindr
Norton also admitted to being the owner of the Kik account that he undercover deputy was using
He added that someone on Kik sent him child pornography and he would send them to other people
Norton also told investigators that the last time he met up with someone underage was “years ago.”
Investigators continued the interview at the Sheriff’s Office
Investigators said they knew he had sent child pornography to the undercover deputy and when they asked if that was correct
“possibly.” He later reportedly admitted to disseminating child porn
Court documents state Norton told investigators he was “struggling with his urges” after he had been out of treatment
He added that it was hard to find a counselor to talk to because he thought he would be judged and possibly reported
he was living in New York and was talking to a 16-year-old about being in a relationship but it never worked out
Investigators found more evidence of Norton sending people child pornography on his accounts
Montevideo Public Schools Superintendent Wade McKittrick said Norton is no longer employed by the bus company and “there is no evidence” to suggest that any Montevideo students were involved
“The individual in question was employed as a bus driver for the company that contracts with the district for transportation services for approximately three months,” McKittrick said
the individual went through all relevant background checks
Due to our legal need to maintain confidentiality
we cannot share further details at this time.”

They held a quiet conversation focused on the positive
and what they thought can be done to steer things in a better direction
“It’s what we can do for ourselves as a community
voicing the theme that quickly emerged during this discussion
Daly is the proprietor of the Java River Coffee Shop in downtown Montevideo
They came at the invitation of the Land Stewardship Project
It is hosting a series of workshops for the public this April under the theme “building a shared vision in Western Minnesota.”
Steering the conversation to the positive is not always easy to do
the Land Stewardship Project organizer who led the session
to be quite honest,” he said in his introductory remarks
Some of that came out as participants voiced concerns about issues ranging from the impact of a changing climate on agriculture to whether the country is moving toward an authoritarian government
“May you live in interesting times,” said Kanne of the phrase used to describe troubled times
with participants speaking about the interdependence of people in rural towns
the importance of building community connections
The examples ranged from local church communities to 4-H as ways to work together
less formal organizations in the Montevideo community that allow people to work together
Participants Teresa Patton and Audrey Arner cited groups working to promote the arts and cultural diversity as examples in their community
as well as groups to give a voice to those resisting the direction in Washington
A desire to support small farms and improve access to land for young people hoping to farm were top of mind for Alex Kiminski
who works with the Land Stewardship Project office in Montevideo
She encouraged finding ways for farmers and others to share resources and help one another in much the same way that the area’s first immigrant settlers did
Her support for small farms was one of the values that participants said they shared
Interdependence and working with neighbors
building community and sharing knowledge and resources were chief among them
Kanne had hosted a workshop in Marshall prior to the Montevideo gathering
He said a common desire to build a better future motivated participants at both
The workshops are not intended to provide an all-encompassing answer or direction
The hope is to find the possibilities that exist in our groups
MARSHALL — Six times the Montevideo and Morris/Chokio-Alberta boys basketball teams have faced each other the past two seasons
more than enough to know plenty about each other
That familiarity seemed to bring out the best in both programs Saturday night in the Section 3AA-North championship game
Top-seeded Montevideo beat second-seeded Morris/CA 65-59 before a large
supportive crowd at the R/A Facility at Southwest Minnesota State University
The victory sends the Thunder Hawks into the Section 3AA championship with a state tournament berth on the line
Montevideo (24-4) plays Jackson County Central for the 3AA title at 5 p.m
The top-seeded Huskies beat the second-seeded Cardinals 73-61 in the 3AA-South championship
the 6-foot-6 Montevideo senior forward who had 16 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday’s win
“I think the guys are really excited for it
Montevideo is in a section final for the first time since 2016 and attempting to earn its first state berth since 2009
The Thunder Hawks’ sophomore guard was a second-grader
“I was sitting right over there,” Epema said as he motioned to the south bleachers at the R/A Facility
five assists and three steals against the second-seeded Tigers (21-7)
as were the two West Central Conference meetings between the two this season
The teams basically traded baskets most of the way Saturday
The Thunder Hawks’ lead never was more than four until right at the end
when they got up 65-56 by making most of their free throws
“I’m really proud of the way we played,” said Derek Webb
Montevideo’s head coach who is in his eighth season
“They (the Tigers) play a real physical game and our guys didn’t back down.”
trying to get back to the state for the first time since 2022
He scored eight in the first half and seven in the second
Brody Dack and Jackson Koenen played supporting roles and both Tosten Christenson and Nels Baukol had key moments coming off the bench
It added up to a victory that helped the Thunder Hawks remove the sting of a postseason loss to Morris/CA last season
Morris/CA beat Monte 65-63 in the 3AA-North semifinals last season
“We’ve had some battles over the years,” Epema said of the Tigers
They’re a good team and it’s a credit to them that they play us so hard.”
Morris/CA led 53-49 with 7:31 to play after Kehoe scored underneath off a nice pass by Tyler Friesen
Monte eventually grabbed the lead for good on a basket by Reidinger off a pass from Epema to make it 56-55 with 4:39 to play
then scored inside to put the Thunder Hawks up 58-55 with 3:44 to go
Epema drove to the basket to make it 60-55 with 2:45 to go
The teams traded misses as Monte worked the time clock a bit
Asmus made 1 of 2 free throws with 46.4 seconds to go
but that’s as close as the Tigers would get
Jackson Koenen hit a pair of 1-and-1 free throws to make it 62-56
Reidinger was fouled with 34.6 seconds to go and made both ends of a 1-and-1 to make the lead 64-56
Dack eventually was fouled and sank 1 of 2 free throws with 6.9 seconds left
MARSHALL — “Blind Pig” is a play that’ll live in Montevideo boys basketball lore after Thursday night
It’s something the Thunder Hawks had drawn up all season for a late bucket
And down 61-60 in the Section 3AA championship to Jackson County Central with 7.9 seconds remaining
“We wondered why (it’s called “Blind Pig”)
“I don’t know where the pig comes in,” Webb admitted
Adam Van Binsbergen passed the ball into Gannon Reidinger
He threw up a contested layup that dropped through the net to put Montevideo ahead by one with 2.2 seconds left
It was the first lead the Thunder Hawks had since it was 2-0
“That was one heck of a finish by Griffin,” Webb said
“I thought he was going to get a wide-open layup and all of a sudden a couple of guys came over to block it and he still was able to finish it.”
A half-court heave at the buzzer by the Huskies’ Roman Voss missed
securing Montevideo’s 62-61 victory at the R/A Facility at Southwest Minnesota State University
“How cool is that to be able to play in the state tournament?” Reidinger said
“We came out on top and that’s all you can ask for.”
The Class AA state tournament begins at 6 p.m
Tuesday at both Williams Arena and the Target Center in Minneapolis
“It felt nice to watch it go through and show what we’ve done all year,” said Epema
“We’ve worked hard all year practicing day in and day out.”
The start of the 3AA championship did not look like a down-to-the-wire thriller
The defending section champion Huskies (24-5) started the game on a 17-2 run in the first six minutes of the game
you can ride the tide when it’s calm,” said Montevideo sophomore guard Adam Van Binsbergen
Montevideo cut the deficit to 33-23 at halftime
Even though Reidinger was held to two first-half points
he was encouraged to keep shooting in the second half
“Gannon’s a great shooter and he’s put in the time,” Webb said
We believed the things we were doing offensively would cash in the second half and thankfully they did.”
Reidinger rewarded his team’s faith by hitting three 3-pointers in a 13-3 Thunder Hawks run
A Reidinger 3-pointer tied the game at 36-36 with 13:10 left to play
The senior forward finished with 11 points
“We appreciate all the support from the community
You’re going to have an adrenaline rush running through you and it’s gonna want to make you play harder.”
the Thunder Hawks managed to slow down the Huskies’ offense
Montevideo out-scored JCC in the second half 39-28
Every effort to tie the game was met by the Huskies as they refused to surrender the lead
Van Binsbergen hit a 3-pointer to make it a four-point game with 59 seconds left
Epema followed up with a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to make it 61-60
missed the first free throw on a one-and-one with 23 seconds to play
setting up the final Montevideo possession
Van Binsbergen’s thoughts as Epema’s game-winning bucket went through the net: “I was just like

URUGUAY: The national government elected in the autumn is to ‘carry to an end’ Montevideo’s proposed tram-train project by the end of its term
Local politician Francisco Legnani said he had agreed the plan with President-elect Yamandú Orsi
Uruguay held presidential elections in October and November last year
and the new government will formally come to power on March 1
A 35 km light rail route has been proposed to link central Montevideo with El Pinar in the east by the ‘Three Eses’ consortium of Stadler Rail Valencia
The consortium is currently working on feasibility studies of the proposal
The route would start in the capital’s historic centre and run along 18 de Julio
Italia and Giannattasio avenues through Ciudad de la Costa to El Pinar
serving 33 stops in the urban area along the coast
the government gave its backing to the development of a more detailed feasibility study at the consortium’s own expense
It is envisaged that the line could be developed through a 25 to 30 year design
which would be awarded through a competitive tender
which would be financed through a public-private partnership agreement
The light rail line is planned to be operated with tram-train vehicles, leaving provision for a future extension over existing main lines, such as the recently modernised Ferrocarril Central
an alternative project was presented by the Centre for Economic Research think tank
This advocated development of two bus rapid transit corridors radiating from Plaza Independencia in the city centre
one would run over a 30 km route to El Pinar
Another line would run to Zonamerica along the busy 8 de Octubre avenue
meaning the two BRT routes would have a similar combined cost to the sole light rail line
who will represent the Canelones departamento which surrounds the capital
said that only the tram-train proposal had so far been formally presented to the Ministry of Transport & Public Works
the city of Montevideo and the Canelones local authorities
‘The [programme of the winning coalition] Frente Amplio establishes the priority of starting to advance quickly on a strategic plan in the metropolitan area
incorporating the different transport systems
Today 60% of the population is concentrated in the metropolitan area’
said incoming Transport Minister Lucía Etcheverry on December 18
It is a ‘priority’ both for the coalition and for President-elect Orsi to ‘move quickly on a strategic plan’ for mobility in the Montevideo area
While freight trains are now running over Uruguay’s renovated Ferrocarril Central main line
the rest of the network has almost no traffic
undermining promises of investment made in recent years
URUGUAY: An external review of the planned Montevideo light rail project is to be commissioned by the Ministry of Transport & Public Works with funding from Inter-American Development Bank
This will help negotiations between public institutions
the private sector and bus operators regarding the planned 35 ..
URUGUAY: The modernised Ferrocarril Central railway linking Montevideo with Paso de los Toros was formally inaugurated with a ceremony on April 16

he added: “It brought some feelings I didn’t quite understand.”
Pederson is easily one of the best-known wildlife artists in the region
He is revered and recognized for his exquisite images of the area’s wildlife and the familiar landscape of the upper river valley area
She is a lifelong artist herself and an advocate for the arts in the region
Pederson’s renewed passion for drawing wildlife began two years ago
He said his health has been declining due to decades of smoking
The dust that comes with working with wood was too much
even though the woodshop is just yards from his home
It was in his rustic woodshop that he carved canoe paddles
created scrimshaw depictions of wildlife on deer antlers and mastodon bones
and crafted wildlife images on native woods
Those works have won him acclaim and attention from well beyond the region
He resumed his focus on drawing by depicting a Plains bison
He relies on hundreds of his own photographs of the wildlife found today in the river valley — from birds of prey and waterfowl to deer — to inspire the many pastel and ink drawings he now possesses
has carried a camera to the field and to his deer stands
Whether it was searching for antlers shed by deer
or hunting with his handmade recurve bows for the bucks wearing those antlers in the fall
He has now created all the drawings he needs to fill a book
His goal is to publish a book featuring a selection of his drawings
accompanied by a narrative of his life’s journey and work
His book will talk about the passions of his life — trees
fishing and art — and how they all became intertwined
and worked at area nurseries before launching his own tree-trimming and woodworking business
His son Brook became his right hand in the business
he also toiled for many years raising local foods in their large garden
he took time to explore the outdoors of his river valley home
He paddled its waters to favorite fishing holes; hunted its game in woodlands and bottomlands; and searched for shed antlers
he slipped quietly into the woods or hideaways on the prairie to silently observe the natural world
Those observations shape his approach to his drawings and paintings
It’s all about accurately portraying what he observes
“I am not the guy who is just inspired by colors and more abstract types,” he said of his work
“I guess I am a realist with a little bit of impressionist thrown in there.”
“Capturing the wildness in them is one of the harder things to do,” he said
This artist is known as quiet and unassuming
But his devotion now to looking back and telling his story has not gone unnoticed
He said that recently his son Brook looked at him and said: “‘Dad
you’re not the same guy I knew three months ago
but I was here all the time,” Pederson said he responded
to find a publisher and put together his retrospective book on his works and life
She’s even given him a thumbs up on his writing skills for the book
which gives him renewed energy each day to tell his story
