Several guide dogs in training spent Sunday afternoon sniffing around the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad station and socializing with various emergency personnel in Montgomery County
Jeanyne Gembarski said the “outing class” was used to help future guide dogs get exposure to the sights, sounds and smells of an emergency response situation. She’s a regional puppy instructor with Guiding Eyes for the Blind
an organization that trains guide dogs for the visually impaired
“The noise part of it is really important
because they’re going to be experiencing sirens a lot in their lives as guide dogs … so we don’t want them to be afraid,” Gembarski said
“We don’t want them to lose focus on their work when they hear a siren.”
Each dog was accompanied by a “puppy raiser” — someone who volunteers through Guiding Eyes to take a pup into their home for around a year to teach obedience
socialize and house train the future guide dog
The puppy raisers wore packs around their waists holding treats
Each dog then had the opportunity to walk around ambulances and other equipment
socialize with emergency personnel and listen to sirens
“We do use a lot of positive reinforcement when we train our dogs,” Gembarski said
“We want to reward them for the good choices that they make
we reward them for being calm and not jumping
We also reward them for not pulling on leash and being connected with their handler most of the time.”
wore his uniform and hat as he crouched down to greet the dogs
“If we’re responding to a fire or an emergency medical call and the dogs have never seen us
then the dogs become a distraction that can actually take away from the patient care,” Mitchell said
the outing class was no burden on the station’s operations
staff from all of our stations came to see it,” Mitchell said
“Many of them diverted their days so that they could spend some time with the dogs.”

A Rockville preschool teacher was arrested April 25 as part of a child predator sting conducted by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) in Virginia
who worked at the Bender Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington (Bender JCC) in Rockville
was taken into custody following an internet chat operation carried out during the week of April 21
The operation resulted in charges against eight men
Police said Sherman believed he was communicating with minors under the age of 15 during the operation
He has been charged with using communications systems to facilitate offenses involving children
“Protecting children from online predators is one of our highest priorities, and I commend our investigative team and partners for their diligent efforts in securing these arrests,” LCSO Sheriff Michael Chapman said in a statement
“These disturbing cases underscore the importance of parents actively monitoring what their children do online and on messaging platforms
and teaching them how to stay safe.”
Bender JCC immediately fired Sherman on April 25 after hearing of the arrest, according to a written statement from the school
He is prohibited from returning to Bender JCC in any capacity
“The arrest had no connection to any conduct that took place at Bender JCC,” the school said in the statement
“Sherman had no previous allegations made against him at the time of his hire
the Bender JCC conducted regular background checks and screenings during Michael Sherman’s employment that did not yield any prior misconduct.”

(WRDW/WAGT) - News 12 has learned that the man who killed one deputy and injured another was facing a judge’s order to turn over all weapons
said he was supposed to give his weapons to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office
Saturday evening’s shooting rocked the CSRA and left many questioning how the incident transpired and when we would learn more
he opened fire on deputies with one of those guns – one that had been altered to operate on full automatic
James Blake Montgomery had raised concerns from authorities who thought he was altering guns to operate in fully automatic mode and was making pipe bombs
After Columbia County deputies stopped him around 6:24 p.m
Saturday in an RV on Interstate 20 to serve him with a protective order – presumably the one signed Thursday – he opened fire on them
and that’s how Sheriff Clay Whittle believes Montgomery died
His body was found hours later – as were a variety of bombs and explosive paraphernalia in the RV
Whittle said that when officers approached Montgomery
Montgomery fired a 9mm AR pistol that had been converted to fully automatic at the three deputies on the scene
White was struck in the face and is in critical condition and has use of his extremities
He is currently in surgery at Wellstar MCG hospital
Whittle said White has a long recovery ahead of him
but is “very upbeat and incredibly strong.”
Deputy Andrew Brown was able to retrieve his gun and
but I think they are the ones who brought this to an end,” said Whittle
Brown dragged White to a patrol car and drove him to Doctors Hospital
Doctors said Brown’s actions probably saved White’s life
but veered into the cable barriers on the left side of the highway
Montgomery was found dead in the RV hours later
a robot and drones identified possible pipe bombs and possible drug paraphernalia in the RV
One of the bombs was rigged with a remote switch
Investigators found four propane containers underneath the RV
Whittle revealed Montgomery was part of an illegal steroid operation
The incident is being investigated by the Regional Force Investigation Team
Sikes had been a deputy since 2018 on the crime suppression team
is also an employee of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office
Montgomery’s body is being transported to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy at a later date

They were having a shoot-out right here on I-20
authorities say Montgomery retreated inside the RV – which authorities feared might be full of explosives
Late Saturday after hours of surrounding the RV and blowing open the door to send in a robot
Montgomery had drawn the attention of authorities
A “be on the lookout” alert had been issued to law enforcement
saying he was suspected of making pipe bombs and converting weapons to be fully automatic
He’d been working odd jobs like landscaping and tree removal while living in the RV at a state park
Court records show a charge of aggravated assault was filed on May 5
He took first offender status and the case was disposed on Dec
He was exonerated and there was no criminal conviction
Montgomery and his wife had been estranged/living apart for several months
He had one child and she had children from a previous marriage
Some witnesses heard the gunfire that was followed by a flood of law enforcement and the shutdown of I-20 and Belair Road
and people yelling,” said an employee at the Cracker Barrel just south of I-20 where Belair becomes Jimmie Dyess Parkway
that’s when I started seeing sheriffs from Burke County and all that,” she said
One employee at the Popeyes on Belair said she saw “the officers flying up the road,” then “next thing you know
the restaurant – which moments before had been in a rush – was empty and Belair was closed
law enforcement vehicles were zooming down Gordon Highway and I-520 toward I-20 – and they were from all varieties of agencies
from local law enforcement to the Georgia State Patrol and Georgia Department of Natural Resources
Officers were keeping traffic from getting on westbound I-20 from I-520
and they weren’t even letting vehicles get onto Bobby Jones Expressway toward Washington Road
but the entire area was very active with law enforcement
and I-20 was to remain closed for several more hours
the RV was the focus of law enforcement alongside I-20
which was devoid of traffic except for police cars with flashing blue lights
with a helicopter and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office drones in the air
authorities were using explosives to try to get in safely
deputies backed away from the RV and a puff of gray smoke billowed away
The situation remained tense until about 1 a.m.

That’s when authorities stated for a second time that Montgomery was “no longer a threat.” Some law enforcement sources privately told News 12 Montgomery was thought to be dead inside the RV
but there was no official confirmation of that
law enforcement had left the scene and I-20 reopened
There was little activity at the site after daybreak Sunday

(WAKA) — The sister of a woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle early Saturday is speaking out about what she calls a dangerous intersection and misinformation released by the Montgomery Police Department
Saturday while attempting to cross Eastern Boulevard from the Sleep Inn hotel to a gas station across the street
Family members say Barclay was partially deaf and had difficulty navigating the poorly marked intersection
“There are no pedestrian crossings,” said her sister
“There are no lights for a pedestrian to cross
wearing one of her sister’s dresses to feel close to her
believes Karla was trying to time her crossing by watching traffic signals
She suspects Barclay never heard the two vehicles allegedly drag racing in the area
“There were witnesses on the scene that said those people that killed my sister had been drag racing for over two hours,” Rasberry said
“They had been up and down that road all night long.”
Rasberry said she was told her sister died instantly and she witnessed Karla’s body lying in the intersection for several hours
a statement from the Montgomery Police Department issued Saturday night claimed Barclay had been transported to a local hospital
That discrepancy only added to Rasberry’s grief
She never got in an ambulance,” Rasberry said
That’s a whole different kind of grief — to think she might have been scared or knew she was dying.”
Following a request from Action 8 News for clarification
MPD issued a revised statement Sunday evening: “At the scene

loved arts and crafts and had a strong sense of fashion
Her hearing loss had prevented her from holding a job
but she had recently begun the process of applying for disability and obtaining a state ID
“She can’t do anything without an ID,” Rasberry said through tears
“There are a lot of people out there who get caught up in the system
A simple fix could help a lot of people before they go too far down that road
I think her legacy should be to live life to the fullest and live it for the Lord.”
Rasberry says she plans to speak with city officials about adding a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection

Colson Montgomery hits a home run during a spring training game versus the Cubs at Sloan Park in Mesa
The White Sox’ decision to send shortstop Colson Montgomery, the No. 35-ranked prospect in baseball, to what they hope will be a slump-busting seminar in Arizona is atypical
Montgomery, the Sox’ first-round draft pick in 2021
is off to a miserable start at Triple-A Charlotte
which comes on the heels of a mostly rough 2024 season at the same level
After beginning the season with a woeful .149/.223/.255 slash line in 23 games
Montgomery was yanked from the lineup and sent to Arizona
where he’s working with Sox hitting director Ryan Fuller and others at the team’s facility
The hope is that the assignment will benefit a player projected to crack the major leagues at some point this summer and a guy who’s still very much an important part of the Sox’ long-term future
But considering how disappointing the results have been for Montgomery at Triple-A
‘‘I don’t think it’s necessarily extreme,’’ Sox player-development director Paul Janish said during a media session Saturday
‘‘I’m glad that we were comfortable enough to pull the trigger on this earlier rather than later
just because it’s something that I think can be a little bit of an ‘aha’ moment to get out of the affiliate day-to-day [life] and just breathe and get back into it
‘‘Other organizations have used it and done it
it’s the type of thing we do with a guy we think a lot of
It’s not the type of thing you necessarily do with everybody
this is what we feel is best in terms of righting the ship.’
everything — this decision or any other decision we make about a player — is with their best interest at heart
Janish said that the Sox hope Montgomery’s time in Arizona is brief and that he’ll be back in the Charlotte lineup soon
right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez was the fourth piece of the return in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Red Sox
Gonzalez recently was promoted to Charlotte
‘‘It’s not necessarily going to be one inning [at a time]; it’s going to be two to three innings
depending on the pitch count,’’ Janish said
‘‘But the thought there is to get him comfortable with that role
from a major-league contribution standpoint
there’s some thought that he can help in the pen.’’
was almost exclusively a starting pitcher before last season
when five of his 24 appearances in the Red Sox’ organization came in relief
He made four starts at Double-A Birmingham before his promotion
Janish said Gonzalez might reach the majors this season in his new role
I think it’s very safe to assume you can see him,’’ Janish said
The Sox scored three runs in the first inning of their 8-3 loss to the Astros but were outscored 8-0 after that
with Astros outfielder Jake Meyers driving in seven of those runs
including a tiebreaking three-run blow against reliever Penn Murfee in the sixth

the Trustees of the Camden Public Library support a YES vote on Article 7
Harbor Park is a historic gift to the people of Camden from Mary Louise Curtis Bok; the Board of Trustees approaches with deep commitment our responsibility to preserve and protect this space

Her goal was to provide a place of respite and enjoyment for all people
a vision that continues to shape the character of the Library grounds today
more frequent and intense instances of extreme weather

Ongoing efforts to repair structural components bordering the park

we have been forced to take interim actions
such as removing plantings along the seawall and moving or eliminating park benches
which are contrary to the original Olmsted plans but necessary to mitigate further harm to the landscape

Library Trustees have invested countless hours in researching the original design philosophy of Olmsted Brothers and the intentions of Mrs
Scenario C aligns with their enduring vision
active participants in the design process for any changes that affect Harbor Park
ensures the Park’s core values are honored and the outcome reflects its historical significance and future promise
as detailed in our Statement on Harbor Park (April 2024)
and unobstructed views — all intended to create a peaceful

Preservation and thoughtful expansion of usable parkland
which now offers opportunities for recreation and education where industrial use once dominated
such as interpretive signage and a land acknowledgment
consistent with the Library’s mission to foster learning and civic engagement
keeping with the original Olmsted Brothers plan by integrating upper and lower park spaces
and maintaining sightlines to the harbor and mountains
Improved accessibility and safety for all community members
with special attention to seasonal hazards
The Town of Camden must take prompt action to remediate Harbor Park and preserve it for future generations
Article 7 represents a commitment to protecting the legacy of Harbor Park without imposing an additional tax burden on Camden residents
