playWhy is Michigan's Sherrone Moore being suspended now (2:09)Dan Wetzel reports on Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore being suspended for two games in 2025 as part of self-imposed sanctions by the university for the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is expected to be suspended for two games for the upcoming 2025 season as part of self-imposed sanctions by the university for the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal The suspensions will be for Michigan's Week 3 and Week 4 games against Central Michigan and Nebraska Moore will also be barred from any team-related duties during those weeks and will receive additional recruiting-related penalties The NCAA can still punish Moore in addition to the self-imposed school penalties A final resolution is expected before the start of the season Michigan opens the season by hosting New Mexico before hitting the road for a high-profile nonconference game at Oklahoma The second-year head coach was offensive coordinator in 2023 when Stalions was first accused of operating an advanced scouting operation by having friends and family attend games around the country and videotape the sideline play signals of future Wolverines opponents Stalions was alleged to have used that tape to decipher their playcalling signals The school and the NCAA are working toward a resolution Moore's suspension ties back to allegations that he deleted a thread of 52 text messages with Stalions The alleged deletions came in October 2023 on the same day that media reports revealed Stalions was leading an effort to capture the playcalling signals of future opponents According to a draft of the notice of allegations obtained by ESPN last year the texts were recovered via "device imaging" and Moore "subsequently produced them to enforcement staff." Moore is accused of committing a Level 2 violation Moore was suspended for Michigan's 2023 season-opening game against East Carolina as part of self-imposed penalties by the university in a different NCAA case The structure of this penalty coming in the third and fourth games of the season gives Moore a chance to coach at Oklahoma where he played offensive guard during the 2006 and 2007 seasons and graduated in 2008 A source confirmed to ESPN that the Committee on Infractions (COI) hearing in Michigan's Stalions case will be on June 6 and 7 Sports Illustrated first reported the dates earlier on Monday There's no guarantee that the COI will accept the self-imposed punishment for Moore as the full extent of the punishment They could levy additional games to the suspension there's no certainty that they'd allow the specific games Michigan is offering There's precedent in the previous Michigan case for the COI to disagree with a proposal for a negotiated resolution that the NCAA staff had agreed to It had been widely expected that the COI would accept the four-game suspension to start the 2023 season Michigan ended up imposing a three-game ban on Harbaugh and the NCAA later suspended Harbaugh for a full year after he left for the NFL The distinction in Harbaugh's penalty and the one Michigan is planning to self-impose with Moore comes with practice time Harbaugh was allowed to coach practice during the week during both the sanction tied to the NCAA case and the Big Ten's punishment later that year tied to the Stalions case Because of an NCAA rule change in January 2024 Moore will not be able to coach in practice for the game weeks of the games in the school's self-imposed suspension That rule expanded the suspension for coaches to include "all athletics activities between contests rather than just the contests themselves." — Michigan is expected to suspend coach Sherrone Moore for two games as a penalty for allegedly deleting text messages he exchanged with Connor Stalions the former Michigan staffer at the center of an NCAA investigation into allegations of advanced scouting Moore is expected to coach the first two games including a Week 2 matchup against Oklahoma before missing games against Central Michigan and Nebraska in Week 3 and Week 4 a source briefed on Michigan’s plans confirmed which has not been confirmed by the university or the NCAA we will not comment on an active NCAA case,” Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf said The NCAA accused Moore of deleting text messages he’d exchanged with Stalions shortly after news broke that Michigan was being investigated for impermissible advanced scouting The text messages were later recovered and turned over to the NCAA Moore hasn’t denied those allegations but said he looks forward to the text messages being released The broader case involving Michigan, Stalions and the NCAA continues to move toward a hearing in front of the Committee on Infractions, which is likely to happen at some point this summer. An NCAA report included allegations against Stalions several assistant coaches and the institution who resigned from his position at Michigan in 2023 is accused of coordinating a scheme to collect video footage of opponents’ signals shot from the stands using tickets he purchased The NCAA alleges Michigan broke a rule prohibiting advanced scouting by collecting video footage from dozens of games involving future opponents Two other coaches named in the notice of allegations former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and former defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale reached negotiated resolutions with the NCAA for recruiting violations unrelated to the sign-stealing allegations Clinkscale received a two-year show-cause order and acknowledged he did not fully comply when the NCAA questioned him about providing impermissible benefits to recruits and their families Minter received a one-year show cause for communicating with a prospect before June 15 of his sophomore year of high school Both coaches left Michigan after the 2023 season to join Harbaugh’s staff with the Los Angeles Chargers Harbaugh was suspended for three games by the Big Ten in 2023 for violations of the league’s sportsmanship policy related to the sign-stealing allegations school-imposed suspension that season related to a separate NCAA investigation into violations of the COVID-19 dead period Harbaugh’s suspensions applied to games only but the NCAA Division I Council has since approved rules that expanded suspensions to all team activities for the week of the suspension ESPN reported that Moore is not expected to coach in practice during his suspension Moore signed a five-year contract to become Michigan’s head coach last year. That contract protects Moore from being fired for cause for NCAA violations that occurred before it took effect as long as the university had “actual knowledge of the facts or alleged facts that are the basis for the violation prior to the execution of this agreement by all parties.” (Photo: Mike Mulholland / Getty Images for ONIT) Austin Meek covers Michigan football and basketball for The Athletic. Add it up and this is a 2025 CFP team The NCAA could further punish Moore beyond the school-imposed sanction we will not comment on an active NCAA case," program spokesman Dave Ablauf said in a text message to the Free Press Moore was one of seven staffers from Michigan's 2023 national championship team accused last August of violating NCAA rules He was Michigan's offensive coordinator that season and served as gameday head coach for four of the six games coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for Moore's deleted texts were recovered through a "device imaging" and he "subsequently produced them to enforcement staff," according to the NCAA's Notice of Allegations draft last year “I look forward to them being released” but that he could not comment further on the matter The school still faces a potential Level I violation from the NCAA, per the NOA draft obtained by ESPN last summer, for a pattern of non-compliance, after the draft showed Stalions allegedly was in charge of scouting, “at least 13 future Michigan opponents on at least 58 occasions between 2021 and 2023.” READ MORE: Michigan football's embarrassing past few years continues to inflict pain having been hit both with recruiting penalties and fines In an unrelated move, university president Santa Ono revealed Sunday he will be leaving Michigan to become president at the University of Florida Submit a letter to the editor at freep.com/letters Tony Garcia is the Michigan Wolverines beat writer for the Detroit Free Press. Before Moore gets his day in NCAA court next month the school has already set its own suspension That wouldn’t happen if Michigan believed it had an airtight defense of its coach especially since those suspensions have additional weight now—coaches not only cannot work on game day they are suspended for the entire week of those games And that self-imposed sanction might not be all that Moore or the school are facing The Committee on Infractions has the latitude to add to it if it chooses—and let’s just say that relations between Michigan and the NCAA have been contentious for years There were penalties and suspensions handed down for a previous investigation when Harbaugh met with recruits during the COVID-19 dead period and then lied about it fought back vigorously during that probe—and that was before Stalions doubled Michigan’s trouble Michigan is answering to six Level I allegations the most serious at NCAA Enforcement’s disposal The NCAA’s “repeat violator” rules could come into play and enhance the sanctions although many people in the college sports space doubt the NCAA’s resolve to administer that penalty in an era when a billion-dollar 12-team College Football Playoff increases championship access geometrically So the stakes remain very high for this meeting in Indy next month But Michigan has already backed down in one key area suspending another head coach after initially standing behind him Everyone in maize and blue who confidently declared that nothing would come of the great Connor Stalions caper now have an interim head coach to cheer for in (at least) two games this season The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Sports Illustrated or its affiliates All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit If you or someone you know has a gambling problem crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER Michigan is playing a game of 52 cleanup Via Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel of ESPN.com, the Wolverines are expected to self-impose a two-game suspension on head coach Sherrone Moore for his role in the Connor Stalions sign-stealing controversy The suspension traces to an allegation that Moore deleted a 52-message text thread with Stalions The deletion allegedly happened the same day media reports first emerged suggesting that Stalions had created an elaborate scheme to crack the code on the playcalling signals of future opponents It allows him to coach the games against New Mexico and Oklahoma Moore will be barred from practice and other team-related duties during those two weeks was suspended for the first three games of the 2023 season He was only prevented from coaching on game day; he was able to be involved with the team throughout the weeks preceding the games he missed A Division of NBCUniversal DISCLAIMER: This site and the products offered are for entertainment purposes only and there is no gambling offered on this site This service is intended for adult audiences No guarantees are made for any specific outcome 1) 0ms;transition:background-color 150ms cubic-bezier(0.4 1) 0ms;transition:fill 120ms cubic-bezier(0.4 1) 0ms;font-size:inherit;}.css-v4v4rs{-webkit-user-select:none;-moz-user-select:none;-ms-user-select:none;user-select:none;width:1em;height:1em;display:inline-block;fill:currentColor;-webkit-flex-shrink:0;-ms-flex-negative:0;flex-shrink:0;-webkit-transition:fill 120ms cubic-bezier(0.4 1) 0ms;font-size:inherit;}@media (min-width:0px){.css-v4v4rs{display:block;}}@media (min-width:1100px){.css-v4v4rs{display:none;}}.css-mps3fk{-webkit-user-select:none;-moz-user-select:none;-ms-user-select:none;user-select:none;width:1em;height:1em;display:inline-block;fill:currentColor;-webkit-flex-shrink:0;-ms-flex-negative:0;flex-shrink:0;-webkit-transition:fill 120ms cubic-bezier(0.4 The suspension will prevent him from participating in any team-related activities, including practices. What's more, he will also receive recruiting-related penalties on top of the suspension. as Wetzel and Thamel explained the NCAA could still further punish Moore as it continues to investigate the situation ahead of an expected resolution before the start of the upcoming campaign The Week 3 timing of the suspension is notable as Michigan is slated to face Oklahoma in a high-profile nonconference game in Week 2 Moore is no stranger to being suspended because of self-imposed penalties as the Wolverines also suspended him for the 2023 season-opening game against East Carolina when he was still offensive coordinator that ban was for a different NCAA case involving Michigan than the Stalions one that has generated so many headlines over the course of multiple years The Wolverines also suspended then-head coach Jim Harbaugh for the first three games of the 2023 campaign although he was allowed to coach practices in the weeks leading up to multiple games Moore is not allowed to participate in practices either with this latest punishment Wetzel and Thamel reported the latest expected suspension is a result of allegations that then-OC Moore deleted 52 text messages with Stalions during the same October 2023 day that media reports started surfacing regarding the former Michigan staffer's advanced scouting and sign-stealing scheme a draft of the notice of allegations previously revealed Moore is accused of committing a Level 2 violation That notice of allegations draft painted a more concerning picture for the program at large as it cited Michigan for 11 violations in all and six Level 1 violations Level 1 violations are the most serious ones the NCAA deals with and could lead to additional penalties 0-5 against Ohio State and never reached the College Football Playoff during former head coach Harbaugh's tenure prior to the alleged beginning of the scheme in 2021 3-0 against Ohio State and reached the CFP three times from 2021 to 2023 including when it won the national title during the 2023 campaign Murphy and Thamel's report on the notice of allegations revealed Harbaugh and former staff members Chris Partridge Denard Robinson and Stalions were all facing allegations of Level 1 violations the draft said one of the Level 1 violations came because of a "pattern of noncompliance within the football program." Two years after the college football world was turned into a frenzy over the Connor Stalions ‘signgate’ ordeal Michigan is preparing to suspend head coach Sherrone Moore for two games during the 2025 season.  you have decided to get out in front of the upcoming Committee On Infractions hearing by acting as if suspending your head coach for games that don't involve Oklahoma is a harsh penalty.  there's one big problem that comes with letting it be known that you are preparing to punish your head coach for deleting messages pertaining to the investigation around Connor Stalions Why would the NCAA allow a school to dictate their own punishment if you have enough evidence to punish the sitting head coach and continue dragging this along?  there have been behind-the-scenes negotiations going on between both sides there are punishments that both sides aren't willing to budge on which happens during these types of situations Just ask the University of Tennessee.  Jim Harbaugh left everyone at Michigan behind to deal with the mess that turned into one of the wildest stories we've seen in recent college football history.  It's like that scene in the opening of Dark Knight Rises when Bane needs one of his mercenaries to die in the wreckage so that the CIA would have someone to take the fall.  Sherrone Moore will be punished for something that has to do with Michigan football First it was for his involvement in what the NCAA deemed recruiting infractions.  the school is getting ahead of its final meeting with the NCAA and letting it be known that they are going to suspend the head coach for two games this season just when you thought it couldn't get any crazier Michigan is going to allow him to miss the 3rd and 4th games of the season but not punish him by keeping him off the sidelines when the Wolverines travel to Oklahoma and don't forget that the NCAA doesn't have to agree to these terms they infractions committee could hammer Sherrone Moore with a longer suspension for deleting text messages to and from Connor Stalions when the news first broke that Michigan was going to be embroiled in a massive ordeal that centered around its football program.  what you are seeing from the Wolverines athletic department is them trying to control the narrative on how they think this situation should end I'm not on the NCAA's infractions committee if you want to send a message that we will not tolerate any type of ‘cheating’ or skirting of the rules when it comes to an investigation Maybe you don't allow Moore to coach against his lama mater during the second week of the season Maybe you shouldn't float this punishment to gauge the feedback of the infractions' committee by making it look as though you are taking this seriously by handing down a suspension that doesn't go into effect until the third week of the 2025 season.  But what I do know is that we see this type of stuff in college athletics all the time where a school will self-impose penalties on itself in the hope that the NCAA will agree not to drop the heaviest hammer this was a ploy by the school to test the infractions' committee hoping that their ‘proactive thinking’ would be enough to satisfy those who will hand down the penalties.  All Michigan has done is make this look like they aren't taking this seriously I'd be sick of the NCAA by now as well The coach who would seemingly take the fall is never returning to college football so it's up to Sherrone Moore to ultimately bite the entire bullet.  he should not have deleted text messages involving Connor Stalions That was the main reason we are sitting here today talking about an upcoming suspension.  How do you think the Big Ten conference feels about this The Wolverines won't have their head coach for the Nebraska game I wonder what the main storyline will be when the Cornhuskers and Wolverines open Big Ten conference play?  The point is that if the NCAA allows Michigan to dictate when the suspension will happen which is seemingly awarding Sherrone Moore by allowing him to roam the sidelines against his former school I'm sick of hearing about the Connor Stalions ordeal though I don't think the same could be said for Michigan opponents now that we have the Wolverines declaring that they are intending to punish their head coach by having him suspended for the second half of September we've lost the whole purpose of punishing someone to begin with.  allow Michigan to dictate the terms of this mess We all know the enforcement arm of the NCAA is falling off anyways if they actually wanted to send a message to the Wolverines the Committee on Infractions would tell Michigan to kick rocks on the idea that they could manifest its own punishment.  we can finally put this ‘signgate’ saga behind us and wait for ESPN to release a 30-for-30 on everything that transpired at Michigan during the Harbaugh era.  You are agreeing to OutKick's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy DISCLAIMER: This site is 100% for Moore said quarterback Josh Allen’s presence made it “very, very easy” to decide on the Bills as his next team Moore also cited his fit with the offense when discussing what appealed to him about the Bills Moore said he was looking for a club where his “talent isn’t really there” and that he found it with the Bills “As far as what I bring, it’s kinda not like similar to the other guys in the room,” Moore said Moore’s addition came after General Manager Brandon Beane pushed back at criticism for not making a bigger move for a receiver during this year’s draft The veteran might not be as splashy a name as some would have hoped but the Bills offense hit high levels without them last year and Allen remains reason enough to believe that they’ll be there with Moore as well Thanks for visiting The use of software that blocks ads hinders our ability to serve you the content you came here to enjoy We ask that you consider turning off your ad blocker so we can deliver you the best experience possible while you are here The win has come with a lot of off-field investigations with massive coaching turnover and multiple scandals coming out of Ann Arbor Here's a roundup of all the ongoing scandals suspensions and trouble from Michigan's 2023 national championship-winning season: The school was stamped with Level II violations while coach Jim Harbaugh was hit with a more serious Level I violation for not cooperating with investigators Harbaugh was given a one-year NCAA suspension and a four-year show-cause order from Aug The punishment means if Harbaugh were to be hired by any NCAA school within that window he would have to serve a one-year suspension before being able to work Harbaugh served a three-game suspension imposed by the school at the beginning of the 2023 season as a result of the recruiting violations Two former Michigan assistant coaches recently settled with the NCAA as a result of the recruiting scandal Former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter now the defensive coordinator for the Chargers under Harbaugh former defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale who is also working on Harbaugh's staff with the Chargers received a two-year show-cause order and must serve a half-year suspension if an NCAA institution hires him this is the less controversial of the two big scandals from 2023 with ongoing repercussions for the program On Oct. 19, 2023, it was reported Michigan was under investigation for alleged sign-stealing The investigations revolved around staffer Connor Stalions, who was accused of attending games featuring Michigan's future opponents and filming the sidelines to steal signs Michigan announced Stalions resigned Nov Earlier in the season on Nov. 17, the program fired linebackers coach Chris Partridge for his part in the sign-stealing fiasco Partridge was alleged to have destroyed evidence in connection with the scandal And on Monday, May 5, the Free Press confirmed the university will suspend Moore for two games in the 2025 season for his part in the scandal Moore is accused of deleting 52 text messages with Stalions around the time of the initial investigation Moore is expected to serve the suspension during the the team's third and fourth games of the season against Central Michigan and Nebraska On Jan. 20, 2023, Michigan fired co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss for "computer access crimes" that have turned into a full-blown FBI investigation and class-action lawsuit The lawsuit includes 42 female student athletes who have accused Weiss of illegally accessing and downloading photos and other personal data from the athletes. Weiss is also facing a criminal case stemming from the same accusations The lawsuit lists the university and its board of regents as defendants along with Weiss as the plaintiffs accuse them of not doing enough to protect the student athletes' data and for negligence in their hiring of Weiss THE STORY: Feds indict ex-Michigan coach Matt Weiss: He hacked computers to spy on women On May 20, 2023, Glenn "Shemy" Schembechler, son of legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, resigned three days after being hired as an assistant director of recruiting Schembechler was found to have "liked" racist posts on public social media accounts On March 16, 2024, defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and resigned five days later On April 15, 2024, former star quarterback and then-recruiting staffer Denard Robinson was suspended after crashing a car at 3 a.m. in Ann Arbor while intoxicated With the Weiss trials and Stalions investigation still ongoing this may not be the last of the Wolverines' problems from the past few years Stay connected and stay informed. He is accused of a Level 2 violation Harbaugh served a three-game suspension in 2023 the year Michigan won the national championship He was able to coach in practice before the games Moore served a one-game suspension as part of separate NCAA violations in Michigan's 2023 season opener against East Carolina He also served as interim head coach in 2023 during Harbaugh's suspension leading the Wolverines to wins over Penn State Moore will still have the chance to coach against his alma mater With the self-imposed suspension of Michigan Football head coach Sherrone Moore which coaches will step up to take over the program during his two-game absence As the dust starts to settle surrounding the self-imposed suspension of head coach Sherrone Moore, many questions start to form over what the Michigan Wolverines will look like in his absence which coaches will step up to take over the program Moore cannot attend practice during those two weeks so it is not just finding a figurehead to call timeouts and throw the challenge flag — it’s finding a leader of men Here are three candidates to replace Moore during his suspension Michigan wanted to reinvigorate the offense after ranking as the 130th passing offense in the FBS last season (out of 133) averaging 8.38 yards per completion and throwing 13 interceptions As the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Tar Heels for two seasons created installs for the offense and was tremendously impactful in quarterback Drake Maye and running back Omarion Hampton’s development into first-round talents With the expectation of already calling plays on offense even with Moore on the field Lindsey should be the first candidate to replace Moore as the interim head coach While Lindsey could be the hot new candidate the Wolverines are fortunate to have an NFL-lifer on their staff in Wink Martindale Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator has a plethora of experience coaching athletes of all ages and talent levels If Moore wants someone who will not make mistakes and go into these two games with an air-tight plan of action While Martindale has never been the head coach of a team he has spent his entire career surrounded by coaching legends and there is no doubt he would be more than serviceable in Moore’s absence What may give Moore pause about Martindale is not a negative Martindale has shown he works best when he only focuses on the defense and giving him head coaching responsibilities could alter Michigan’s successful method to its madness do not be surprised if Lou Esposito earns the job most recently overseeing the defense and the defensive line at Western Michigan for seven seasons (2017-23) Esposito could make sense for a few reasons He brings an intensity and charisma that many players like His command of a room is incredibly noticeable and it could bode well if he stepped into the interim role Martindale works the best when he stays within his defined role turning to Esposito would allow the coordinators to stay within their lane and give a position coach the opportunity to lead everyone in a holistic fashion I believe that Lindsey will be the interim head coach Between Harbaugh choosing Moore when he was in this position and the continuity that will remain on the offensive and defensive side of the ball with Lindsey and Martindale calling plays Lindsey being the choice should give Michigan the best chance of succeeding in its two matchups without their head coach Don’t rule out another dark horse candidate like Biff Poggi or Moore picking a different interim head coach for each of the two games JavaScript is required to use content on this page The report says Moore will miss the third and fourth games of the season against Central Michigan and Nebraska as part of the self-imposed suspension Michigan opens the season against New Mexico and then hits the road to play Oklahoma This suspension is linked to the ongoing investigation into illegal advanced scouting by Connor Stalions a former staffer who resigned midway through 2024 During his suspension, Moore won’t be able to participate in any team-related activities. He is also expected to get recruiting-related penalties, Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel say in the report. Moore was the offensive coordinator when Stalions got accused of advanced scouting in 2023. The Wolverines went 15-0 and won the national championship, but the investigation into this case has continued by the NCAA. Stalions is accused of sending people to games involving future Michigan opponents and having them send him cellphone video of the sideline signals. additional punishment(s) Here are 3 thoughts on the self-imposed suspension: The Michigan Wolverines have handed down a self-imposed ban to head coach Sherrone Moore for the upcoming 2025 season related to the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal Moore will be suspended for the Week 3 home game against Central Michigan Here are a few thoughts on this breaking news it’s fair to assume the NCAA will eventually assign additional punishments to Moore Despite Jim Harbaugh serving a self-imposed three-game suspension at the start of the 2023 season due to impermissible contact with recruits/players during the pandemic the NCAA still handed down a four-year show cause which essentially banned Harbaugh from being a college coach until 2028 Will the NCAA see this self-imposed ban and give some grace to Moore it isn’t likely considering A) This is Moore’s “second offense” after also being involved in the previous NCAA case and B) The NCAA continuously makes bad decisions and is one of the most corrupt organizations in all of sports Moore’s involvement in this case has to do with him deleting 52 text messages with Stalions texts he deleted on the day the news broke in 2023 the texts were later recovered and showed zero evidence he was aware of what Stalions was doing The fact Moore is even deemed “involved” in this case is ridiculous When Harbaugh was suspended by the university in 2023 he wasn’t able to coach on the sidelines on Saturdays but he was able to coach during the week and prepare the team for his absence Moore’s suspension, according to the original ESPN report The suspensions will be for Michigan’s third and fourth-week opponents — Central Michigan and Nebraska — and will include being barred from any team-related duties during those weeks .. A key difference in this penalty and the three-game suspension served by Jim Harbaugh at the start of the 2023 season is that Moore will not be able to coach practice in the game weeks of the Central Michigan and Nebraska game Harbaugh missed those three games to start the 2023 season but was essentially with the team at all times outside game days It’s really unfortunate Moore won’t be with the team at all during that two-week span Whether that makes a difference in the games is obviously to be determined it could put a damper on the overall team morale not having their head coach present for 14 straight days The silver lining — if any — here is Moore will be available to coach against his alma mater That will be one of the most anticipated games of the season for Michigan and even more so for Moore considering he was an offensive lineman in Norman from 2006-07 Missing the game at Nebraska could be detrimental (if Nebraska actually shows up this year) But missing the Oklahoma game was clearly a non-negotiable for Moore Him still being able to go to Norman this fall is great for him and for the team as it hopes to make an early-season statement Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore is expected to be suspended for two games of the 2025 season as part of the self-imposed penalty by the school that is tied to the scouting scandal involving former assistant Connor Stalions.  This all stems from Michigan being served a notice of allegations for the whole ordeal that also saw Jim Harbaugh suspended multiple times during the 2023 season for his role in the Stalions saga, which was the talk of college football during the Wolverines national championship run.  In the notice of allegations against Michigan which are considered to be the most serious his suspension is tied to the then assistant coach deleting a thread of 52 text messages in which he was communicating with Connor Stalions.  When news broke that there was an investigation into Stalions in October 2023 Moore allegedly deleted the messages in an attempt to hide any type of communications with the ‘ringleader’ of the advanced scouting scandal the messages were discovered when "device imaging" was used to find the deleted messages.  The first time Sherrone Moore was suspended came during the 2023 season-opener against East Carolina which was part of a recruiting investigation that the NCAA was conducting on the Michigan coaching staff.  OHIO - NOVEMBER 30: Head Coach Sherrone Moore of the Michigan Wolverines speaks to media during the post game press conference after a college football game against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium on November 30 The Michigan Wolverines won the game 13-10 Moore is expected to be suspended for two games of the 2025 season but there is a kicker to this whole situation The Wolverines head coach will not be suspended for the opening games of the season Why would Michigan try to negotiate the dates for when its head coach would be suspended?  the Wolverines will play Central Michigan and then Oklahoma during a two-game stretch in September of this upcoming season It seems as though Michigan has negotiated enough with the NCAA that it will allow Sherrone Moore to coach against the Sooners where he played offensive guard during the 2006 and 2007 seasons while also graduating from the school.  This means that the head coach will not be on the sidelines for the Central Michigan One of the biggest differences between Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore's suspensions is that the head coach will not be allowed to be involved in practices during those two weeks when the Wolverines are preparing for Central Michigan and Nebraska.  not only has the NCAA continued to put Michigan's head on a swivel for this entire ordeal involving Connor Stalions but they are allowing Sherrone Moore to coach in what would be Michigan's biggest non-conference game up to that point in the season.  IF the NCAA was actually trying to send some type of message they would not have allowed Michigan to dictate the terms by allowing them to coordinate when Sherrone Moore would serve his suspension.  All of this still needs to be officially approved by the NCAA's committee on Infractions which is scheduled to take place in June.  Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInCLEVELAND Ohio (WOIO) - With this punishment, Moore could coach against his alma mater Oklahoma in game two, but not be involved in any team activities for the following two games. As of now, Moore will not coach those games that were previously mentioned. It is all in relation to the sign-stealing scandal involving Connor Stalions. Right now, Wetzel seemed a little skeptical if the NCAA would accept the punishment. “Not the first two games of the season. It’ll be games three and four, because — well, we don’t know, but we can speculate this: Sherrone Moore went to Oklahoma,” Wetzel said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “He was an offensive lineman at Oklahoma. The source spoke to The News anonymously because the university hasn't made an official announcement ESPN first reported on the sanctions Monday morning Moore is expected to miss Week 3 and 4 games against Central Michigan and at Nebraska was Michigan's offensive coordinator in 2023 when the scope of low-rung staffer Connor Stalions' alleged sign-stealing scheme came to light Stalions was alleged to have sent a network of people to stadiums across the country to record future opponents' sidelines from the stands for allegedly deleting text messages with Stalions The NCAA investigation into a sign-stealing scandal led to the allegation that Moore deleted 52 messages with Stalions The deletion occurred around the time media reports revealed Stalions' involvement in the scheme The Big Ten suspended then-head coach Jim Harbaugh for the final three games of the 2023 regular season when Moore filled in as interim head coach including for wins over Penn State and Ohio State The NCAA has been investigating the Stalions' scandal since Stalions resigned in November 2023 Harbaugh left Michigan after the 2023 season to become head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers and athletic director Warde Manuel promoted Moore to the head coach's seat and alleged lying to NCAA investigators about them The NCAA accepted Michigan's self-imposed sanctions in 2023; it remains to be seen if it will in 2025 The NCAA Committee on Infractions has levied penalties against two former Michigan assistant coaches in separate resolutions Last week former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter was given one-year show cause and former defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale was given a two-year show cause Both are now coaches under Harbaugh with the Chargers The recruiting violations by Minter and Clinkscale were part of the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations delivered to Michigan regarding its investigation into a sign-stealing scheme There has been no resolution to the larger portion of the NCAA’s investigation and Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said that could come in late summer Moore was suspended the season opener in 2023 as part of a negotiated resolution for another recruiting-related NCAA investigation Warning: This essay contains spoilers for the film Sinners and then again by Mark Murphy for 1963's That's How I Love the Blues! its lyrics seem to lean into anti-secular reprimand: "You were born in a dive / And weaned on misery / Then you put down some jive / And crashed society," the performer exclaims the godless music of boozing and fornication and infidelity It has made people grieve since Adam and Eve the voice betrays the lyrics: The performances are always a bit cheeky It's the way they tug on the words pleasure and pain in its paternalistic relationship with sin may by extension be something the culture can't live without Writer and director Ryan Coogler's new period drama Sinners is a blues movie that understands this inherently While operating on many levels — as a reimagining of the Southern Gothic vampire story à la Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire or the HBO series True Blood and as a send-up of the horror genre that conceptualizes the terrors of the Jim Crow South's social construction as a figurative sundown town — the film revolves primarily around ideas of Black spirituality and the music's place in the Mississippi Delta community's evaluations of righteousness and iniquity There are references to Black Christianity and Hoodoo and music functions as a turn toward both salvation and damnation The agnostic but faith-appreciating narrative plays into this duality from its opening seconds: "There are legends of people born with the gift of making music so true it can pierce the veil between life and death conjuring spirits from the past and the future," a voice-over explains "This gift can bring healing to their communities Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as the twins Smoke and Stack intent on opening a juke joint after working for (and ripping off) Al Capone's Chicago Outfit a pastor's son known as Preacher Boy (played by newcomer Miles Caton) is an aspiring musician; his father warns that the blues is supernatural but the boy is set on leaving town and pursuing a career as a singer and guitarist The would-be bluesman tags along as the twins split up and ride around Clarksdale a hometown from which they are notably estranged setting up for the juke in a sawmill purchased from a member of the Ku Klux Klan Their stable of hired hands and patrons includes Smoke's wife Annie (Wunmi Mosaku); Stack's white-passing ex-lover Mary (Hailee Steinfeld); Pearline (Jayme Lawson) a married singer whom Sammie pines after; the busker Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo); the field hand turned bouncer Cornbread (Omar Miller); and the married shopkeepers Grace and Bo Chow (Li Jun Li and Yao) As Clarksdale's Black community gathers to drink and dance away their troubles the historical fiction whiplashes into paranormal horror nearby we are introduced to a daylight-seared creature of the night the Irish vampire Remmick (Jack O'Connell) Remmick finds sanctuary with a Klan-aligned married couple and rewards their hospitality with a gory home invasion that makes them blood of his blood When the music of the juke draws Remmick's attention he sets upon the party with his newly made progeny in pursuit of Sammie whose singing and playing possess a mystic gift Remmick's interest in Sammie flows directly from the power of his music: The vampire is called to it as a preternatural force that allows him to see across the threshold to commune with the souls of his lost friends Those he turns are part of a hive mind he controls and he plans to remake Sammie in his image "The blues are the roots of all American music," Willie Dixon, who knew a thing or two about trading in Mississippi gospel for Chicago blues so will the blues." You can read the throughline of Sinners — in which Sammie the lone human survivor of Remmick's vampire horde abandons his father's church to play blues in Chicago despite the horrors it brings to the juke — as not just a rejection of religiosity but an embrace of the blues' sorcery and its continuance as a sort of cultural necessity honoring the sacrifices that sustain the music writing as Leroi Jones in the book Black Music "To go back in any historical (or emotional) line of ascent in Black music leads us inevitably to religion The phenomenon is always at the root in Black art the worship of spirit — or at least the summoning of or by such a force." Sammie's embrace of blues isn't an either/or proposition; his blues is bonded to his Preacher Boy essence Baraka noted that the "song quality" of blues was the deepest memory one pulling from a particularly racial reinterpretation of history and religious zeal carried throughout generations "The God spoken about in the Black songs is not the same as in the white Though the words may look the same … it is a different quality of energy they summon," he wrote and the way it unfolds in the film through magical realism feels like corroboration of that blurred memory which spirals through time in the viewer's perspective "I'm full of blues," he sings in "I Lied to You." "Holy water too." The juke is depicted as lively and liberatory Though all the problems still follow them in there is solace to be found at the barrelhouse as the boy finds blues and its culture of sin as a kind of momentary emancipation from Jim Crow's pervasive restrictions while the pastor sees them as merely another threat to community building The music does attract undead demons that wreak havoc on their little hamlet Both are portrayed merely as means to navigate Black struggle That Remmick recognizes the value in the blues doesn't make it unholy the vampire seems to represent the parasitism that is appropriation vampires are the ultimate culture vultures with the "soul" in soul music stemming from both an urgency to Black American life — its tribulations and sequestered community — and its inherent spirituality Remmick longs to tap into those energy sources and it's his desire to simply steal it that makes him a villain You can find a clear overlap between blues and the hip-hop evoked by "I Lied to You": Like its ancestor rap transmuted the ugliness of Black struggle into cool and were rejected as wicked for embracing frankness to the point of being profane so true it can seem like they pierce the veil and are constantly under threat from interlopers trying to siphon off that cool without tapping into the racial memory "All my albums are about trying to find that fun and meaning — recycling our trash and debris It undermines the actual ending some — one where Smoke fatally wounded in an early-morning ambush by the same Klansman who signed over the mill reconnecting with the spirits of Annie and their child in the daylight Together they lead to clashing interpretations of the legacy of that night the value of life and death and the preservation of soul the flash-forward feels crucial to Sammie's story you can read the music as an urtext for Black American memoir one that must carry on come hell or high water Inscribed in its everlasting songs are not just a historic memory maintained across time An earlier version of this story misstated the name of Anne Rice’s novel Become an NPR sponsor Michigan will suspend head coach Sherrone Moore for two games during the 2025 season, according to a report Monday from ESPN will miss U-M's Week 3 and 4 games with Central Michigan and Nebraska This plan will allow Moore to coach the Wolverines' highly-anticipated non-conference game at Oklahoma where Moore played offensive line from 2006-07 The suspension is further fallout from the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal which engulfed the 2023 season Moore was caught up in the scandal when investigators alleged he deleted a thread of 52 text messages with Stalions Moore later produced the text messages for NCAA enforcement staff after they were discovered via "device imaging." Moore claimed he deleted the text because he was angry at Stalions.  In addition to missing games against the Chippewas and Cornhuskers Moore will be barred from all team activities in those weeks and will also face additional recruiting restrictions The NCAA could hit Moore with further punishment; full resolution is expected before the beginning of the season Michigan is scheduled to meet with the NCAA's infractions committee next month This will be Moore's second suspension while at Michigan He missed the team's 2023 opener against East Carolina will serving a self-imposed suspension for a different NCAA case.  It seems the Michigan Wolverines navigated their football coach's entire suspension around their looming matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners ESPN's Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel reported Monday that Michigan will suspend head coach Sherrone Moore for two games during the 2025 college football season because of his involvement with the Connor Stalions scandal in 2023 when the Wolverines won a national championship while Moore was offensive coordinator Moore deleted 52 text messages with Stalions after news broke that Stalions had been sending friends and family to games to record signals from future opponents Michigan could face further consequences from the incident the school imposed the two-game suspension on its head coach Moore will not only be absent from the sidelines during games but he will also be banned from any team-related duties during those weeks the oddest thing about Moore's suspension is the timing Instead of just suspending Moore the first two weeks of the season when the Wolverines play Central Michigan and Nebraska Apparently the Wolverines aren's as worried about Central Michigan or Nebraska in a Big Ten game as they are about a nonconference matchup with Oklahoma The Sooners will host Michigan Week 2 on Sept 6 at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium The Wolverines open their season against New Mexico at home while OU will kick off 2025 against Illinois State in Norman The meeting will also be Moore's first chance to lead a team against his alma mater Moore was an offensive lineman for the Sooners in 2006-08 under Bob Stoops He appeared in only 14 games during his OU career while blocking for quarterback Sam Bradford Moore will return to Memorial Stadium for the first time on Sept he'll be off work for the next two weeks while the Wolverines take on opponents they're less fearful of Even those outside of Sooner Nation see it's obvious what Michigan is trying to do and what a joke it is Yet another sign that Oklahoma should be pretty good this season.
