traffic The funding is included in the FY25 Capital Improvement Plan The agreement was approved by the Lee County Commission at its February meeting The city council also approved an agreement with Barge Design Solutions, Inc., for design, bid and construction phase services associated with the East University Drive culvert replacement at Summer Trees Drive in the amount of $315,000 The approval further authorizes an additional 10% of the contract amount at $31,500 as contingency for unforeseen circumstances The project consists of replacing the corrugated metal culvert with a new concrete culvert and repaving along East University Drive at the Town Creek Crossing near Summertrees Drive The project’s total capital budget is over $3.3 million The city council approved two alcohol capital improvement plan for the city of Auburn: https://static.auburnalabama.org/media/apps/www/capital-improvement-projects/future-projects/FY23-FY24-Mid-Bi-Document---6yr-CIP-SECTION.pdf The City will allocate $889,000 in federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds to support the construction of an affordable housing community for seniors aged 55 and older including 31 one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom apartments The funding commitment is contingent upon the project receiving an allocation of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) from the Alabama Housing Finance Authority LIHTC funding is a vital tool for creating affordable housing by offering tax credits to developers in exchange for building or rehabilitating units for low- to moderate-income residents Arbours at Moores Mill II is a $19.5 million development by Birmingham-based Arbours at Moores Mill II The project will reserve units for individuals at 50% and 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and maintain affordability for at least 20 years Phase I of this project will be completed in summer 2025 and includes 80 units for seniors aged 55 and older The City’s commitment of HOME program funds reflects its dedication to addressing affordable housing needs By leveraging federal resources like LIHTC and HOME funds Huntsville continues to enhance housing opportunities while fostering community growth and inclusivity Huntsville’s Community Development department oversees and implements HOME programs and many others to support the vitality of neighborhoods The goal is to stabilize lower-income neighborhoods to economically empower lower-income persons and/or those living in lower-income neighborhoods and to provide assistance to the special needs population in our community Nearly a year after the Atlanta City Council green-lighted a project to remake one of Atlanta’s most rapidly developing corridors into a friendlier more efficient place for non-motorists and drivers alike the Howell Mill Road Complete Street project has entered a new phase of construction It’s not the only people-friendly road overhaul to gain momentum this month west of downtown and Midtown As visitors to Westside Provisions District and points north have likely noticed in recent weeks the City of Atlanta’s Department of Transportation has begun installing pedestrian safety and signal improvements as part of the broader Howell Mill Road redo That includes wider sidewalks and ADA-friendly curb replacements along with median and resurfacing work in the corridor closer to Interstate 75 the next steps will see utility relocations—power and telecommunications—along with three new traffic signal installations and continued curb and driveway apron repairs and replacements All work is being relegated to the hours between 9 a.m The full scope of the Complete Streets project calls for resurfacing Howell Mill from just north of Collier Road down to Marietta Street Along the route the city plans to synchronize traffic signals with fiber technology upgrades and build raised bike lanes from Forrest Street (about a block north of Atlanta Water Works) to all points south along Howell Mill Other upgrades will focus on sidewalk repairs and additional safety improvements such as roadway-grade bike lanes and three new mid-block crossing are scheduled to be implemented along with a new right-turn lane installation where Howell Mill meets Huff Road The Atlanta City Council approved legislation in September to fund the full project and construction partners P2K and Lefko Construction were picked in a joint venture as general contractors to build the street upgrades The corridor’s upgrades aim to help accommodate a population influx in the area that’s created a wave of new businesses—and traffic snarls the three-lane roadway snaking through neighborhoods such as Home Park and Marietta Street Artery had been mostly unchanged in recent years Howell Mill’s Complete Streets overhaul was once expected to begin in 2017—adding bike lanes and new turn lanes—but was later axed from Renew Atlanta’s $250 million project list the project still hadn’t been fully funded According to ATLDOT’s most recent estimates the Howell Mill project is expected to cost roughly $21 million The target completion date is still listed as winter 2026 Nearby residents and Howell Mill drivers can expect to experience “significant disruption” from here until then with intermittent lane closures being part of the process ATLDOT reports this week that crews are mobilizing to begin construction on the Joseph E another project west of the city center that will begin at Atlanta University Center and travel about a mile and ½ north Lowery Boulevard plans call for raised and roadway bike lane installations new signalized intersections and signal upgrades The project’s scope spans from two blocks south of Martin Luther King Jr between Clark Atlanta University and Booker T “The corridor will become not just smoother but also safer for pedestrians and transit users,” ATLDOT officials wrote in an update this week Twitter / Facebook/and now: Instagram   • Home Park news, discussion (Urbanize The Atlanta Police Department investigated a bomb threat at a YMCA Monday night Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead on Moores Mill Road NW Police said nothing hazardous or dangerous was found at the facility the winter holidays always mean plenty of home baking and a stop at Moores' Flour Mill That's where shoppers will find ingredients including fresh-ground corn meal along with packages of pistachio nuts The store displays more than a dozen varieties of flour The small retailer attached to the business' sizeable production facility near the Redding Regional Airport even sells flour made from garbanzo beans millet or spelt — with all of those products ground on site "Thanksgiving and Christmas are traditional baking holidays and we definitely see an influx of retail business around that time of year," said Bob Moore Jr. Starting off in a 'Quonset Hut'The business turns 50 years old in late November It dates back to when the Moore family — father Bob and his brother Ken — opened the flour mill off Highway 273 in a rented $150-a-month Quonset Hut is now 70 years old and runs the much-expanded Redding company located just north of Redding Regional Airport where production and retail sales take place He said the business' retail side continues to rock its vintage look with a focus on products that he said are popular with health-conscious home bakers who are into whole grains "We feel like we're kind of selling old-fashioned kind of products many generations — not a lot of the processing that takes place in modern "We try to invoke that old-time feel to our product line." There's a nostalgic air at the retail shop that's filled with decorations including a turn of the century-style wooden telephone with a long metal mouthpiece that is mounted on the wall behind the cash register Labels affixed to packages of the mill's cranberry pecan granola and other products carry an illustration of an historic white mill building complete with a giant waterwheel and a miller standing nearby Even a wall calendar displayed near the store's register is dated 1893 sporting a photo from the historic Walter A Wood mowing and reaping machine farm equipment company "And so just the idea of taking something as common as flour and sort of build a little romance about it just sort of seemed like the right thing to do." when the family went to the bank to borrow $5,000 to get equipment installed Moore said consumer interest in more healthful eating and whole grain products was only just taking off This is going to pass.' That was 50 years ago Other funds for the startup came from money raised from dismantling and selling 18 currogated metal grain bins the family bought for $200 apiece in Sutter County and sold at a profit said he quit his jobs in logging and stocking newspaper boxes to focus on the family's milling venture full time "we had days where nobody even came in and the whole time we were setting things up just curious what was going on," said Moore After he painted a sign and put it up on the building we had a few products out on the shelf and somebody came in and bought a bag of flour." I was paying my mother 50 cents an hour and my brother and I were both paying our wives 50 cents an hour to come in and package and do the bookkeeping — you know the things that families do to get businesses started." Moores' Flour Mill moved to its second location a 10,000-square-foot building that still stands at 1605 Shasta St an area then just outside the city's busy retail hub before the opening of Mt "That was a real ideal location for a long time," said Moore who added that all six of his children had worked in the mill or store in the past The complex produced the various kinds of flour it sold to walk-in customers The business expanded to having local bakeries bake bread using the mill's flour so Moores' could have fresh loaves for sale at their shop every morning Then the Redding business started selling its flour products to local bakeries Seeing the limitations of operating in a small town they sought out bakery and mom-and-pop store customers across the region "I'd get up three in the morning and drive over to Eureka go all the way down the coast," making deliveries to independently-owned "hippie health food stores," Moore said the Redding mill soon was supplying business customers from Sacramento to the San Francisco Bay Area "That was a large part of my business here was just delivering flour and beans and the different things that we made to the small stores," he said Note to readers: If you appreciate the work we do here at the Redding Record Searchlight, please consider subscribing yourself or giving the gift of a subscription to someone you know said he bought out his father and brother's shares in the Redding milling company But the elder Moore eventually started his own milling company a Oregon brand that is widely carried in large grocery chains nationwide the Oregon company is not connected with Moores' Flour Mill in Redding The change from a retail operation to one producing and selling products mostly wholesale left the Redding business again needing more space they opened a 65,000-square-foot manufacturing and retail complex on an 11-acre site south of Redding on Mill Lane but the flour mill continued to run its much smaller retail store downtown at the time During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the virus put Moore in the hospital, the Shasta Street location was closed on Jan 2021 and all the Moores' Flour Mill operations relocated to the new complex Noted Moore: Staffers went from "listening to trains going by all day long to listening to planes take off behind us here." They've got changes in store for the new year Some new whole grain products will launch in January adding to the store's already-popular offerings of buttermilk pancake and cornbread mixes "We're in the process of expanding our product line we'll have everything in place and we're really going to start promoting the retail I think there's a large potential there that we haven't taken advantage of People are still living in a modern world and time is of the essence so there is a convenience factor that we recognize," said Moore."I intend to go back and refocus on that," he said public safety and whatever else comes up for the Redding Record Searchlight/USA Today Network Accepts story tips at 530-338-7753 and at mrchandler@gannett.com Please support our entire newsroom's commitment to public service journalism by subscribing today pour up some hot cocoa in thermoses and hit the road – our much-anticipated list of Huntsville & North Alabama Christmas Lights is back by popular demand The minute the Thanksgiving leftovers are gone we start putting together the ULTIMATE list of local home and neighborhood Christmas light displays in Huntsville so your family can enjoy them We assume you’ve already done the Galaxy of Lights and Tinsel Trail – if not They are on the Must List for light aficionados and both have added new features to their spectacular light displays Want to be on our super cool map?
