Moosic officials want a councilwoman to resign amid charges she embezzled $41,000 by padding her sick time while she was borough administrator
had not resigned either as a councilwoman or borough planning commission member as of Monday afternoon
The borough asked for her resignations from both in a statement issued Friday
“We are devastated to bring these allegations of abuse of power to light,” Bennie said in the statement
“We understand that the trust of borough residents has been betrayed
we welcome the input and support of borough residents to rebuild from this moment.”
Efforts to reach Sterling were unsuccessful
“If I made a mistake and I owe Moosic Borough
and I think I made a mistake,” she said during a March 20 interview with investigators that included Munley
Sterling won her council seat in the November 2023 election and resigned as administrator the next month
according to an arrest affidavit filed by Lackawanna County Detective Renee Castellani
Sterling worked for the borough for years before taking over as administrator in 2007
She had exclusive access to its Freedom Systems payroll
The borough required her to train employees so they could manage the payroll system once she left
“Sterling did not provide complete access and training
which made it very difficult for other employees to get into the system,” Castellani wrote in the affidavit
Thomas figured out the system and found Sterling added hours of sick time for herself
then generate payroll checks to get paid for the sick time between Oct
Sterling was entitled to be paid for 905 hours of sick time
she added another 1,291 hours and cashed out at her hourly wage of $31.93 an hour
Castellani charged Sterling with unlawful use of a computer and theft by unlawful taking
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 22 at 10 a.m
Sterling is free on $25,000 unsecured bail
The borough says it has taken steps to avoid a repeat of the theft
The Sterling name is well known and beloved in Moosic
Sterling is married to a grandson of Ben Sterling
who owned the once wildly popular Rocky Glen Park
an amusement park that went out of business in the late 1980s

MOOSIC — A Moosic council member has been charged with theft after police say she added 1,200 hours of sick time to her account when she served as the borough’s administrator
According to the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office
an investigation began after the Moosic Borough filed a theft complaint against 66-year-old Jane Sterling
Sterling was the Moosic Borough Administrator from 2007 to 2023
She had exclusive access to the borough’s payroll system and was responsible for paying all borough employees
Sterling added 1,291 hours of sick time to her account from 2013 through January 2023 when she served as the borough’s administrator
Investigators reported the theft added up to $44,221
Detectives say that when the new borough administrator accessed the payroll system
it was discovered that Sterling wrote fake time/payroll records
adding 1000 hours of sick time for herself and generating checks for herself for the accumulated sick time
police said they confronted Sterling regarding the theft complaints
where she blamed the discrepancy on her lack of knowledge of a new payroll system and claimed she added sick time that she hadn’t received
Sterling said she added the time to her account because she was “having a hard time at work with another employee and said
and that’s when I went in’,” according to court documents
Sterling was appointed to the Moosic Borough Council in January 2024

(WOLF) — Officials in Moosic have voted against granting a special exception permit
for a drug rehabilitation center to be placed on 4113 Birney Avenue
citing a violation of a section of the code
There are several prohibitions in place when it comes to drug treatment centers and facilities
these facilities cannot be located within 500 feet of a public park or playground and the proposed site location was less than 200 feet from a public park
Aside from being in violation of the zoning board's ordinances
Moosic residents have also spoken out against the location
despite claims that the facility would be therapeutic and not administer medication
Solicitor of the Moosic Borough Zoning Board
summarizes the overall concerns of the outspoken community for the fear of furthering drug abuse issues in the borough
“Some of the neighbors didn’t feel that having a drug treatment facility that close to these hotels that are known for drug deals would be conducive to the neighborhood
other neighbors complained about the fact that they were concerned about having a drug treatment facility that close to the playground where their children and grandchildren play," said Frederickson
Frederickson further states that the borough is not opposed to a drug rehabilitation center within the community but would just need to meet the prerequisite guidelines and choose a site which meets those conditions
Moosic Mayor Bob Bennie feels that other locations within the borough would better suit the rehabilitation center
This is the second request for the facility
and it remains unclear whether another request will be made
capable of producing 1.5 million of the candies per day
will help the company meet growing demand for the nostalgic treat
Bazooka Brands announced this week it recently opened a new manufacturing plant for Ring Pops capable of producing 1.5 million of the candies per day
The 120,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Moosic
is roughly four times larger than the facility it’s replacing and will help Bazooka meet growing demand for Ring Pops
The company did not disclose the factory’s cost
though it said it was a “multimillion-dollar investment.”
The new facility replaces the original Ring Pop factory which operated in nearby Scranton, Pennsylvania, for 47 years before it unexpectedly closed last August due to structural issues, according to the Scranton Times-Tribune
said he thought it would take over a year to get its supply chain running again
but the company’s employees worked fast and secured a new location for a factory within weeks
they moved our equipment,” said Jacobs in a statement
The facility was funded by private equity firm Apax Partners, which acquired Bazooka in 2023 for an undisclosed amount
which makes a variety of products from Baby Bottle Pop to Bazooka gum
said the manufacturing overhaul comes at a time of growth
Company sales are projected to cross $100 million in 2025
Ring Pop was first introduced in 1979 by Frank Richards
a product engineer at its original owner the Topps Company
who created the candy to help his daughter break her habit of thumb-sucking
The overall market for candy in the U.S. is projected to reach $22.9 billion by 2030, increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.9%, according to Research and Markets
