MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Morgantown Police Department has launched the “Ride with a Recruiter” program, designed to reach those interested in a career in law enforcement. On WAJR’s “Talk of the Town,” Police Chief Eric Powell said they are 14 officers short of their authorized strength of 76 officers, and he hopes this program will translate into more recruits. “Currently we have two officers at the academy starting today; we just graduated two officers on Friday, and we have at least three applicants that are in the process,” Powell said. Participants get to engage with senior leadership of the department and ask questions, experience various types of calls, and observe police as they interact with members of the community in different situations. “It’s a ride-along program that we are trying to encourage people looking for a career in law enforcement,” Powell said. “It’s an opportunity to ride with officers that are already working the job.” Once in the car, the recruit has the opportunity to watch the officer interact with the public and do their job. The officer also has time to watch the reactions of the recruit and help them understand the steps required to become a sworn police officer. “It gives them a chance to get some insight into what it’s like to work for our department and also an opportunity to pick the brains of the officers they’re with about the process, strategies, and successful ways to navigate the process,” Powell said. The officer has the opportunity to observe the recruit as the calls come in and are cleared. Powell said the recruits get a special preview of the department, leaders, and the community they’ll serve from the front seat of a police car. “It gives us an opportunity to get to know them,” Powell said. “And start early on building relationships with people and understanding who they are and where they’re coming from,” Powell said. “It also gives us feedback on developing other recruiting strategies as well.” Probationary officers with the Morgantown Police Department start at $25.27 per hour, with an increase to $27.22 upon receiving certification. A sign-on bonus of $5,000 is awarded to all certified officers upon hiring. Monongalia County Commission has yet to receive a payment from the Monongalia County Development Authority for use of the former Montgomery Ward department store building located a stone’s throw from the county courthouse The agreement gave MCDA a five-year grace period to begin making $2,780 monthly payments to the commission toward a $500,000 purchase price for the first three floors of the building The appraised price of the space at that time was $1.5 million.  The county kept the basement and fourth floor for storage Fast forward a little over eight years – some three years after payment was to begin – and the county commission has approved $500,000 to MCDA to replace the building’s elevator address a water line issue and cover the authority’s $130,000 annual dues to the Morgantown Area Partnership for 2025 This is where things become somewhat confusing MCDA is one of the organizations for which The Partnership provides administrative and office support – thus the dues Whereas MCDA has paid an executive director in the past — Holly Childs most recently – Partnership President and CEO Russ Rogerson has filled that role since his hiring in March of 2019 Other agencies under The Partnership umbrella include Main Street Morgantown the Morgantown Area Chamber of Commerce and Campus Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (Sunnyside Up) MCDA has dues outstanding for the three years prior according to information obtained by The Dominion Post The Partnership is to pay MCDA $33,000 annually for use of the building’s second floor space The 17th Judicial Circuit Court Public Defender Corporation pays about twice that amount to rent the building’s third floor according to Monongalia County Commissioner Sean Sikora Sikora explained there were a number of stipulations that came with the $500,000 approved by the commission on Wednesday Two – MCDA can’t recoup funds by raising the rent paid by The Partnership even if the development authority ends up purchasing the building outright Three – if MCDA wants to sell the building The Partnership has the right of first refusal the rent being paid by existing tenants goes directly to the county “I want people to understand how successful that building has been,” Rogerson said explaining MCDA put between $500,000 and $700,000 into the building following the 2016 agreement with the county I think that building’s been a huge success and in large part that’s thanks to you all The original agreement made that possible and we really appreciate the fact that you’re willing to step up and continue to be the strong partners to development and provide a solution and a scenario that I hope you believe is fair to all A functional elevator is critical to a five-story building Sikora referred to MCDA as being “cash-strapped” due to its efforts to transform 10 acres of dilapidated houses along Richwood Avenue into East End Village – a walkable mix of housing and retail on the doorstep of downtown Morgantown MCDA purchased the land for $11.8 million in 2020 “The development authority has expended all its cash assets on this project over the last three and a half years …” both the county and city of Morgantown put up $500,000 to be held in a mandatory cash reserve as a requirement of the refinancing package sought by MCDA won’t be needed unless MCDA doesn’t sell any of the East End property for development within a year of refinancing As collateral for the city and county’s backing MCDA put up the 90-acre site near the Morgantown Municipal Airport currently used as a borrow site for the city’s runway extension project but identified as the future home of a 54-acre commerce park The East End Village development is expected to draw between $100 million and $200 million in investments into the city of Morgantown over the next five years or so Eight remarkable members of the West Virginia University Class of 2025 who have distinguished themselves through The Way Ahead is written by and for young professionals in oil and gas Changes will be implemented during the summer months Ross Hodge and staff landed their big targets out of the portal and have now had to reset the board to figure out what pieces they need to complement their current roster Let's start with who West Virginia already has on board They have gained commitments from guards Honor Huff (Chattanooga) they have added Brenen Lorient (North Texas) They should have seven open roster spots remaining The staff will use every resource to complete this roster and even looking overseas at foreign prospects let's start with Xavier de-commit Jayden Forsythe The West Chester, Pennsylvania prospect visited West Virginia this weekend, per 247 Sports Sam Kayser. He is a 6'5" shooting guard who has impressed scouts across the country with his shooting ability Another name I'm told West Virginia fans should watch is Arizona de-commit Fridrik Leo Curtis The seven-footer had WVU in his top three before committing to Arizona but the new staff has thrown their hat into the ring Indiana and Darian Devires are also believed to be involved From the transfer portal, West Virginia is currently linked to two prospects, LSU's Curtis Givens III and South Carolina's Morris Ugusuk. The Givens contact was reported by Greenlight Media and he has a lot of teams lining up for his services Memphis figures to be the biggest competition right now Both players are combo guards that fill a need West Virginia has Ugusuk specifically would add great shooting to the roster as he shot 40.7% from three-point range last season means West Virginia will likely recruit from the JUCO ranks more than most other high-major programs There is only one contact that has been made so far and that is with Davion Hill out of Northwest Florida State College The 6'2" guard averaged 14.3 points per game last season and would add needed backcourt depth Things will begin to pick up soon as Ross Hodge and his staff get situated in Morgantown Updated O-Line Depth Chart With New Additions Donovan Haslam and Carson Lee Big Division II Wide Receiver Transfer Begins Visit to West Virginia SAC Defensive Freshman of the Year Sets Visit to West Virginia Marshall Scoops Up Another West Virginia Player Out of the Transfer Portal They have now added five new offensive linemen since the end of spring practice with the newest one coming today in Donovan Haslam from Austin Peay Haslam was a member of the 2022 class and appeared in 10 games as a true freshman He took a redshirt in 2023 and only appeared in two games he won the Governors' starting left tackle position and totaled 622 snaps He posted an above-average Pro Football Focus grade of 64.0 and excelled as a pass blocker with a 72.8 grade From our own Schuyler Callihan on April 29th: physical lineman who possesses powerful hands to go along with a strong lower half he's pretty athletic for his size and can pin and pull smoothly he'll be in the mix for a starting spot he'd be a swing tackle option and someone Rodriguez could utilize in jumbo packages." The 6'4" 332-pound lineman from Perry Since Rich Rodriguez took over the Mountaineers have now added Donovan Haslam (Austin Peay) and Kimo Makane'ole (LSU) from the transfer portal West Virginia Hoping to Make Major Portal Splash with LSU Transfer Guard West Virginia University Police issued a Community Notice following the arrest of a suspect for an alleged stabbing that happened during a fight at an off-campus private residence at 565 Price Street near the Downtown area of campus late Friday (May 2) The stabbing was reported to University Police around 10:30 p.m and officers quickly arrested the alleged suspect — Kaden James Vinar Minnesota — on a felony charge of malicious wounding The victim, also a WVU student, was treated at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for a not life-threatening knife wound to the leg Vinar was arraigned Saturday (May 3) in Monongalia County Magistrate Court “This was not random. The alleged suspect and the victim know each other. The victim was visiting Vinar’s home at the time of the incident,” UPD Chief Sherry St. Clair said “The quick response from our officers to locate the suspect and take him into custody ensured this remained an isolated incident At no point was there a threat to campus and We always encourage our students and other members of the University community to work on healthy ways to resolve conflicts.” Health, safety, preparedness and training resources are posted at safety.wvu.edu and police.wvu.edu Students and employees are encouraged to follow the WVU Safety and Wellness Facebook page as well as @WVUsafety on X, and download the LiveSafe app and allow push notifications for the latest safety information A Community Notice is part of the WVU three-tiered emergency notification system used to enhance student and employee safety and provide useful information to the community Call 1-855-WVU-NEWS for the latest West Virginia University news and information from WVUToday The combo guard was back on the market after spending last season on the shelf at West Virginia Last Friday I mused if Missouri was done recruiting the transfer portal and while I didn’t think they wouldn’t add someone else to the roster the point was any further additions would likely have little real impact to the roster a former West Virginia Mountaineer and Detroit Mercy Titan found a new home today when he committed to Dennis Gates and Missouri NEWS: Jayden Stone (@JaydenSballin) will transfer to Missouri, he tells @TheAthleticCBB In 23-24, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game Sat out this year with an injury pic.twitter.com/vyWWSupMfx The transfer wing missed all of last season in Morgantown dealing with an undisclosed injury, little more was said than it was just an ‘Upper Body’ injury. The year prior Stone was the leading scorer at Detroit Mercy, albeit for one of the worst teams in the country. Detroit finished the season 351st in KenPom.com and with a record of just 1-31 But scoring 20 points per game is still scoring 20 points per game and Stone averaged 20.8 ppg his last season before transferring to West Virginia Missouri is getting a guy who put up big numbers and someone with a bit of an injury history One thing to keep an eye on is that Stone has played in just 69 career games over five seasons Previous School: West Virginia - Detroit Mercy - Grand Canyon These are the highlights from two seasons ago Obviously without playing this past year there’s less to go on Stone played primarily off the ball at Detroit but with a usage over 30% he played with the ball in his hands quite a bit The primary play type for Stone that year was the pick and roll with with a healthy amount of isolation mixed in as well Stone’s possessions boiled down to nearly 20% in the Pick and roll In no dribble catch and shoots he shot 36.4% and in unguarded catch and shoots that number boosted to 42.6% Stone’s efficiency took a dip with so much of the offense running through him last season his efficiency was 1.27 ppp the year before on just 18.6% usage Going from 18% usage to 30% usage will cause anyone’s efficiency to slide and at least at Missouri the ask won’t be to handle that much of the offense Stone’s addition will certainly be as a role guy off the bench and he’s shown the ability to shoot well off the catch Missouri should have a reliable experienced wing to backstop some of their younger Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla and New York Knicks guard Miles "Deuce" McBride will meet in a best-of-seven series to determine who will play in the Eastern Conference finals Mazzulla is in his third year as the Celtics' lead man and is looking to defend last year's championship The 36-year-old has quickly become one of the best coaches in the NBA The Celtics made easy work of the Orlando Magic in round one taking the series in five games and winning by an average of 16.5 points per game McBride struggled on the offensive end in the series shooting a combined 8/30 from the floor and 5/19 from three-point range Game one of the series between Boston and New York will tip off on Monday at 7 p.m Javon Small Receives an Invite to the 2025 NBA Draft Combine No. 16 West Virginia Looks to Keep its Big 12 Momentum Against Texas Tech Which West Virginia Undrafted Free Agents Could Make a 53-Man Roster? One player the Mountaineers are hoping to land is former LSU guard and top-50 recruit Curtis Gaines III. Over the last handful of days, West Virginia has hit up a handful of pass rushers in the transfer portal and recently scheduled a visit for Incarnate Word's David Grant (6'3", 225 lbs). We might not have the extra stuff that some of the programs have, but we’re going to have enough. What we got to have, what is non-negotiable, is the earned success model and the hard edge mentality that we’ve got to exhibit every day,” said Rodriguez in a sit-down interview with CBS Sports’ Josh Pate “I wouldn’t have come back if I didn’t think we could win a national championship I could have stayed there and finished my career it is so neat to see everybody in the state come together,” reiterated a confident Rodriguez He spent most of the spring practice period doing that He also knows he can’t endure the type of first season he did back in 2001 Rich Rodriguez Explains Method to His Madness, Benefits of ‘Hard Edge’ to Mountaineers Rodriguez has also been honest about knowing he simply can’t go 3-8 this time around. The WVU program expects more, the fans demand more and he’s taking that seriously Is it fair to expect instant national title contention right away But Rodriguez believes that a positive of this era of the sport is it’s actually easier to turn a program around in one year in many respects a football program with a far worse history than WVU into the College Football Playoff in his first season at the helm Rodriguez believes it is possible at West Virginia Asti: Winning Only Option for Rich Rodriguez in Second WVU Tenure currently holds a 190-128-2 overall coaching record He experienced most of his success while leading the Mountaineers from 2001-2007 Rodriguez won four Big East titles and was named conference Coach of the Year twice He added a third Coach of the Year honor in the Pac-12 in 2014 with Arizona the West Virginia stands as the winningest program (15th overall) without a national championship claim The Mountaineers have 15 conference titles but failed to even reach a Big 12 Championship Game since joining the conference in 2012 And while some argue WVU should claim a national title from the 1922 season – West Virginia went 10-0-1 that year capturing the schools’ first-ever bowl win in a season team with fewer wins and a worse record claim a share of the title the current 12-team College Football Playoff format creates a path to an undisputed title no one could deny and that’s what keeps Rodriguez going Find more coverage of Rich Rodriguez at WV Sports Now For a related story, Rich Rodriguez opens up about the pressure surrounding his return to West Virginia This article probably made ESPN cry with frustration OLLI at WVU and the WVU Committee of Retired Faculty will host a virtual lecture by David Stewart titled “Swimming in the Fabric: Time and the Gravity of Experience” at 2:30 p.m Wednesday (May 7) on Zoom Find more information and register to attend. CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A final round rematch from 2024 yielded the same result in 2025, as Morgantown High School defeated Bluefield on Thursday, to claim the schools’ third consecutive Academic Showdown Grand Championship. Correctly naming American writer Toni Morrison as the author of the novel “Beloved” set the final score at 26-10 in favor of the Mohigans.  “The thing I immediately thought on that final point was ‘we did it,’” Morgantown Team 2 Captain Julianna Ferrell said. “We wanted to have fun, but also wanted to be competitive. We are ecstatic that we have won three years in a row. We have so many wonderful teachers that have prepared us for this event, and we are thankful for them. Through practice, we have developed so many inside jokes and have shared in each other’s interests.” The win earned Morgantown’s Team 2 a $1,000 grant, with each member receiving a new Dell Chromebook. For their second place finish, Bluefield High School has earned an $800 grant, with all members receiving a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. “Appearing in the finale is a culmination of years of hard work,” Bluefield High School Team Captain Quinn Brown said. “There were moments where we thought we would be eliminated, but we forged on and placed second. I think it’s incredible that a school as small as ours has displayed such camaraderie and talent in making it this far.” Morgantown High School has emerged as something of a dynasty in the Academic Showdown competition. In addition to claiming three out of the four possible state titles since the competition began, Morgantown swept their regional contest at West Virginia University last February, with both of the school’s teams qualifying for the Grand Finale in Charleston. George Washington High School claimed the inaugural championship in 2022. Including Morgantown and Bluefield, a total of 14 teams competed in Thursday’s state finals, which was held at the Culture Center in Charleston. The top two finishers from each of the seven regional competitions qualified for the event.  Additional qualifying teams included Huntington, Nitro, Winfield, Braxton County, Westside, Sherman, Greenbrier East, Bridgeport, Grafton, Spring Mills, and Berkeley Springs High Schools. The 3rd through 14th place finishing teams each received a $300 grant.  The Academic Showdown is made possible through a partnership between the West Virginia Departments’ of Education and Arts, Culture & History, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.  By Autumn Shelton, RealWV CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It’s official.
