Bronx officials from the borough president’s office said the borough received a previous DRI award in 2018 for the Bronx Civic Center in the South Bronx
Addressing local elected officials and various stakeholders gathered at Morris Park public library for the announcement
the governor said the DRI was one of her favorite programs
because it gives back to a community that believes in itself
“It gathers leaders and elected officials and everybody who cares about their neighborhood
brings them together to come up with an idea
It’s normally a $10 million announcement and people get very excited about that
We are going to make it $20 million!” Cheers and applause ensued
The governor said 32 proposed projects may benefit from the funding
but they have not yet been selected for funding under DRI
but these [undisclosed projects] will deal with transit
and everything that makes this community even better,” she said
Hochul said she looked forward to coming back to announce the final selected project
after the required review process and then “get them shovels in the ground.” She said coming from Buffalo
she understood what it meant to come from “a community that sometimes is a little knocked down.” She added
“It just gives you that sense of confidence that you matter
that people believe in you and just as I do believe in this community.”
The Greater Morris Park DRI area has general boundaries of Pelham Parkway to the north
East Tremont Avenue and Westchester Avenue to the south
and Bronx Park and White Plains Road to the west
It includes the neighborhoods of Morris Park
Existing Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) within the Greater Morris Park DRI include the Morris Park
the area is a top 10 employment center for New York City and
will soon see two new Metro-North stations opened as part of the Penn Station Access project
A recent rezoning plan was approved along with $500 million in capital to support the community
Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson described the funding as a significant investment in The Bronx
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to position the Greater Morris Park community as a critical intermodal transit hub that will drive future growth
and dramatically enhance the economic vitality of The Bronx,” she said
She thanked “the governor’s continued leadership in recognizing that The Bronx is a thriving economic generator” that Gibson said will continue to create job growth and career opportunities for its residents
“We are excited to see this $20 million financial commitment and are grateful for our Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC) team

“We know the Downtown Revitalization Initiative is something that is critical to local communities
particularly here in Morris Park in my district
and there’s so much exciting things happening in this community.”
“There’s so many things that we’ve been looking at working on over the last decade
with myself and other elected officials past and present,” she said
“This is just such great news to know that we’re finally going to get the boost that we’ve been asking for to revitalize our community
to make sure that the business corridor is strong
She said she was looking forward to hearing about the process and gathering more ideas from the community
Asked if the funding was separate from designated funding for the new Metro North Stations
“Yes.” She said some of the possible projects floated revolved around parks
including Matthews Playground and Loreto Park
and mentioned possible “sensory playgrounds.”
“I know Camilla has always wanted to see the power lines go underground
but it certainly is an opportunity to have maybe our storefront improvements
to see our sidewalks all improved without a cost to the businesses
to see connectivity brought in like these link towers
“What we’re looking at is what we’ve always deserved
Our businesses and residents have a lot to be proud of
and this money is being put to use and being executed by some of the best people in our borough.” She spoke of a Bronx renaissance

Danny Desai has had a common complaint when he and fellow cricket players played their favorite sport in Parsippany's Troy Hills Park over the years
so that's why we played there," said Desai
who has lived in the Morris County town for nearly two decades
But now cricket lovers in Morris County have not one but two fields that are fit to play the world's second-most popular sport at Lewis Morris Park in Morristown
which will open officially for play in April when cricket season is in full swing
The fields, located in the Russell W. Myers Recreation Area, were designed for the softball version of cricket (which is played using a tennis ball) played by members of the growing Indian American population in Parsippany and across the county as well as those from various countries where the game is popular
They include players in the New Jersey Soft Ball Cricket League
which has some teams in the Parsippany area
Desai said while he does not play recreational cricket anymore
he is happy to see a place where cricket aficionados can engage in their beloved game
The kids are going to be very happy in the future," Desai said
"There are officially two grounds for Morris County
Cricketers will need to schedule the use of the fields through the Morris County Parks Commission
Work on the fields in the county park began in the spring
several months after the Morris County Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the project
The $225,140 construction contract awarded to Bridgewater-based Aspen Landscaping included grading and shaping approximately four acres
The field where cricket is played is a large grassy area

Everyone on the same teamThe ribbon cutting to officially launch the fields was on Oct
the cricket fields coming to fruition was a team effort due to various players from local
Among the officials Desai credited for the fields is State Senator Joe Pennachio
and aptly named Morris County Commissioner John Krickus
Desai said Pennachio heard his complaints at a roundtable meeting with two dozen leaders of the Indian community in 2023 about the lack of cricket fields in Parsippany
Pennachio said he was glad he played a role in getting the fields created but gave most of the credit to Krickus and other members of the Morris County Board of County Commissioners
He also appreciated hearing from his constituents
"I wanted to make sure my friends in the Indian community feel comfortable," Pennachio said

a longtime Parsippany resident and liaison of its Indian community to Parsippany Mayor James Barberio
who was at the ribbon cutting with Barberio
said he had also heard for some time from fellow Indians wanting a dedicated cricket field for years as well
particularly Krickus for “taking interest in the Indian community” by putting in the fields
He also said that Parsippany set aside funds to develop a permanent cricket pitch in Parsippany’s Volunteers Park next year
Barberio also confirmed that a new cricket pitch will be in Volunteers Park
He said the new fields were "perfect," which he saw as a testament to the commitment of county officials like Krickus and those at the Morris County Park Commission
‘I don’t care what property you find in the county
just get it done;" and he did,” Barberio said of Krickus
Krickus said the location of the new fields was determined by various factors
grassy area that was open space and did not require taking out trees
He was pleased with how quickly the project came off
"It is very satisfying in a couple of ways
One is that we were able to move really quickly
Government does not move as fast as people would like," Krickus said
"The second part was a number of representatives of the Indian community [at the ribbon cutting]

looking to capitalize on new transit options near two of four Metro-North stations to open in the Bronx in 2027.The zoning changes will allow for housing development in parts of Parkchester/Van Nest that are currently zoned only for commercial and manufacturing uses
and increase the amount of housing allowed both there and in residential districts of Morris Park
that would make it easier to build citywide

Bronx CB10, which covers the Pelham Bay and Westchester Square neighborhoods, opposed the rezoning, saying in its recommendation that “building height remains a concern,” and calling for the plan to include more affordable home-ownership opportunities
While community board votes aren’t binding, they can influence how the City Planning Commission and City Council negotiate the details of a land use deal. City Councilmember Kristy Marmorato, whose represents much of the rezoning area and has previously opposed high-profile housing projects in the district
“From the moment this proposal was introduced
I have been committed to ensuring it aligns with our community’s needs and aspirations,” the lawmaker said ahead of her vote
we secured critical modifications to this plan,” she added
“This includes capping building heights
reinstating parking mandates and protecting our low density neighborhoods.”
Councilmembers say they also negotiated $500 million in local infrastructure investments to accompany the rezoning
including renovations to eight parks and playgrounds
The money will also go to building a pedestrian plaza at the Morris Park station
plus transportation enhancements and drainage upgrades to prevent streets from flooding across the rezoning area
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said that work “will have a lasting positive impact for the residents of the Bronx.”“Confronting our city’s housing and affordability crisis requires creating more homes for New Yorkers,” she said in a statement
“The opening of new Metro-North stations in the East Bronx presents a unique opportunity to develop new housing and homeownership opportunities.”

The New York City Council has officially approved the Bronx Metro-North Station Area Plan
the first neighborhood plan certified and approved under Mayor Eric Adams’ administration
The plan is designed to accompany four new Metro-North stations coming to the Bronx in 2027 and is expected to create approximately 7,000 homes
including permanently income-restricted affordable housing
along with improved public spaces and enhanced access to mass transit
The plan allows residential uses in sections of Parkchester/Van Nest currently designated for commercial and manufacturing and expands the amount of housing allowed in residential districts of both Parkchester/Van Nest and Morris Park
It also aims to strengthen commercial corridors and support the growth of prominent local institutions and job centers
the plan includes investments in public amenities and infrastructure
and drainage infrastructure upgrades to enhance public space
The plan’s approval follows over six years of public collaboration
The Bronx Metro-North Station Area Plan is part of the Adams administration’s broader efforts to address the city’s housing crisis
which include the “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity” proposal and other neighborhood plans across the city
Location of new Parkchester/Van Nest Station
“On behalf of the Bronx business community
we commend the City Council on the approval of the Bronx Metro-North Station Area Plan,” said Lisa Sorin
“This groundbreaking initiative will benefit our borough by not only creating thousands of new jobs and improving transit access for commuters
but also infusing the East Bronx with much-needed housing units as well as community resources and public space enhancements within adjacent corridors.”

The “10,000 permanent jobs” sounds a bit wishful thinking
I worked near the site of the Morris Park station for nearly 40 years and I do not see the medical facilities expanding just because of a new station
It might reduce the use of the express bus that runs to 5th Ave.
provided one is going to the Grand Central area
The Hutchinson Metro Center was originally a children’s facility on the grounds of Bronx State Hospital
It was an award-winning silver structure of striking design
it was closed and sold to a party that replaced the exterior with a far less interesting appearance
The medical facilities have publicly acknowledged desired expansion as a result of the new Metro North station
They also said they want to build r&d facilities at the Hutch (and another hotel like the Marriott that is already there and doing well)
The developers also asked the state to build a direct entrance ramp from the parkway into the complex as well
The Hutchinson Metro Center currently has 8K people working there
They announced plans to double to size of the complex once the station is operational
So that stands to reason approximately another 8K
Montefiore stated they are going to expand too
That’s not to mention ancillary businesses that will pop up once all the residential is built and 10K is absolutely reasonable
When the Hutch Metro Center was built you probably thought they would never reach the numbers they have now
I cannot imagine why a patient would leave Manhattan for the Bronx given the superior medical facilities there
Einstein College of Medicine was recently put on accreditation probation
Einstein College of Medicine is one institution at that location
Montefiori desires to work with partners to expand in that area
It makes sense with the new Metro North Station and room to expand
Einstein was built in that location so its students could train in Jacobi Hospital
Jacobi had trouble attracting physicians and had an affiliation contract with the medical school to obtain staff
Yeshiva University dumped the medical school as it was claimed to be losing money and Montefiore
which had been hired to operate the college hospital
Montefiore has been absorbing hospitals in the Bronx and Westchester
They obtained properties on the other side of the tracks on Eastchester Road to the south (formerly the site of a station) and converted the auto repair businesses into outpatient facilities and labs
That is complete false what you said about the school
Yeshiva University had to give up Einstein because they lost billions of their endowment with Bernie Madoff
Montefiore was flush with cash so took it over
Montiefiore is one of the top hospitals in the region (which is why it is taking over suburban hospitals) and Einstein is in the top 100 medical schools in the nation
There is a reason they just received a $1billion gift
Failing universities don’t get gifts like that
They also are high up on attracting NIH funding
Seems you have an axe to grind with them for some reason
I worked at Einstein/Montefiore for 40 years from 1968
There was always conflict between Yeshiva and the medical school with the feeling that too much grant money was going to the wrong place
I am aware of the Madoff scandal even though I was retired by that point
They had to sell because the loss of a large chunk of endowment affected their ability to function
Universities have endowments because unless they have a profitable sports program- schools don’t make money
Again Einstein just got a billion dollars
Bloomberg just gave his former school Johns Hopkins a billion as well
Sometimes those big gifts are so schools can expand

Especially on weekends, every square inch of this narrow Morris Park deli is occupied, with a line of people wedged against shelves of jarred tomatoes and dried pastas, and snaking out the door. G&R has been around since 1978, but their claim-to-fame—a viral Italian meatball cone—is much newer. Once you get past the meatball though, you’ll find a hollowed out hero with not much going for it. So stick to what they've been doing best for decades: straight-up Italian sandwiches.
Behind the counter, sandwich-makers construct things like The Famous Bronx Godfather, layered with every meat imaginable and sun-dried peppers with the texture of fruit leather. Other staff swing big hunks of deli meat by the strings and take orders for four pints of sausage and peppers please. Their shirts say “You Can’t Spell Great Without G&R," which is accurate in every way.
