Cinematographer Brandon Swanson had just started the camera on an epic interview setting when something caught my eye
“Do you have something on your hand?” I asked Bishop
Most of us react when a bee is in our immediate vicinity
and almost everyone reacts when one lands on their hand
lifting her hand closer to her face to get a better look at the bee crawling across her knuckles
Bishop’s low-key, inquisitive approach to things that make the rest of us squirm helps make her a wonderful interpreter of subjects as complicated and abstruse as geology
Geologist Ellen Morris Bishop in Hells Canyon in June 2024
and is perhaps best known as the author of “In Search of Ancient Oregon: A Geological and Natural History.”
The groundbreaking 2004 book is a survey of the forces that brought what we now know as Oregon up from the depths of a primordial Pacific Ocean. The readable, general audience book won the Oregon Book Award for best nonfiction that year
“I was in Portland one evening,” Bishop recalled. “And I was walking past the Schnitz and on the marquee it said, ‘John McPhee tonight,’ and I was a big fan of reading John McPhee’s ‘Basin and Range' and his other books about geology
I managed to get one of the last seats in the nosebleed section.”
The fact that McPhee had filled the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for a talk about a book on the grindingly slow processes that formed the landscape of North America blew her mind
“This is like a whole sold-out thing!” she marveled
Bishop realized there was a big audience that was as curious about the world around them as she was but likely had no geology background. That insight spurred her to write “In Search of Ancient Oregon.”
as well as our “Oregon Field Guide” tour through the landscape
traces the story of how the land mass we now call Oregon was underwater until fairly recently in geologic terms
Some 280 million years ago, a chain of volcanoes formed along the subduction zone at the edge of the Pacific tectonic plate. These island arcs rode along as the Pacific plate migrated north and eastward from their original latitude of modern-day central Mexico
The islands eventually collided with the North American plate about 130 million years ago
As they were pushed up against the vast new continent
some of Oregon’s first dry land took shape in what is now the northeastern corner of the state
That a subject as esoteric as plate tectonics became a popular science hit was due in part to Bishop’s evocative and beautiful photography
and the Imnaha River canyons in Eastern Oregon
“My parents are both artists,” Bishop explained
the New York couple’s precocious only child was given free range and learned to feel at home in the wild
“We would go for walks in the woods and my parents were always pointing out the colors and the patterns and the different varieties of rocks
And so I got interested from an aesthetic point of view.”
the iconic mountain of the Wallowa's Eagle Cap Wilderness
Like other peaks in the core of the wilderness
it is composed of granitic rocks that were generated by the heat of the Wallowa Terrane's ancient collision with present-day Idaho on the North American tectonic plate
Bishop developed a rich understanding of composition
which she combined with her instinctive fascination with all things mechanical and love of the natural world
“To combine the creative thought of art and creative thought of science is a very cool thing,” she said
or thought that girls could make good scientists in the 1960s
I was pestering the local earth science teacher
to let me into his ninth-grade earth science class and he
she signed up for a college correspondence course in geology from the University of Arizona and was immediately hooked
Bishop found herself as one of only two women majoring in geology
“It was a different row to hoe,” Bishop remembered
but characterized her male classmates as “welcoming.”
“We went off on field trips and had a great time
And there would be a much shorter line at the women’s restroom.”
Along with teaching gigs at local colleges and managing Eastern Oregon ranches with her late husband David Bishop
she found herself in the perfect spot for a lifelong exploration of the region’s diverse and complex landscape
and we’re always finding out new things in science,” Bishop explained
A close-up look at a stretched rock resulting from the high-heat
high-impact collision of the Wallowa Terrane island arc with the North American tectonic plate some 130 million years ago
Bishop reveals these ideas in photos of wide landscapes as well as macro examinations of rocks
both of which hold clues to Oregon’s earliest origins
Bishop hauled a sledgehammer up a hillside just on the Idaho side of the Snake River and whacked off a hunk of green-gray rock
she showed us evidence of the geologic process by which Oregon first appeared
and it has little white crystals in it and that’s a mineral called plagioclase,” Bishop explained
“The composition tells us that this came from an island arc
or at least from the same kind of subduction zone process.”
That an ordinary-looking rock can reveal a 280-million-year-old story was no surprise to Bishop
“They have a superb story to tell if you listen to them with a great deal of patience and fortitude,” Bishop said
Those characteristics appeared to still be in active use a good two minutes after the bee landed on Bishop’s hand
“It’s a sweat bee,” she concluded after watching the bee work its way across her palm
“It’s actually in the wasp family and just having a wonderful time
I’ll have a really clean hand when I get home.”

but not enough to win over Mike Budenholzer
Welcome to our Phoenix Suns Season in Review series
where we take a closer look at each player who suited up during the 2024–25 campaign
and what each player can do to take the next step heading into next season
When the Phoenix Suns signed Monte Morris in free agency last offseason
the 2023–24 Suns sorely lacked anything resembling quality point guard play
known for his impeccable assist-to-turnover ratio—the “Count of Monte Assist/TO”—was supposed to bring stability to a position that had been in disarray
It felt like a step in the right direction
A player whose skill set mirrors Morris’ in many ways
only with a higher profile and a promise from head coach Mike Budenholzer that he would be the starter
The Disease of What If starts to creep in when you think about what could’ve been if Morris had gotten a longer leash
he looked every bit the quality contributor he was expected to be
He was a steady hand with a bit more defensive grit than Jones
even if he shares the same size limitations
Morris feels like a victim of the Suns’ broader roster mismanagement
both at the front office level and on the bench
He never really had a chance to leave his fingerprints on the season
he wouldn’t have been the magic fix for all the Suns’ problems
But it sure would’ve been nice to see a little more of Monte
$2.1 million veteran minimum salary and will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason
Monte Morris was a regular part of the Phoenix Suns’ rotation
and just 0.4 turnovers across 13 minutes per night
scoring 12 points on four different occasions and reaching double figures in eight of his 45 total appearances
his struggles from deep—shooting just 30.4% from beyond the arc—became a growing concern
Morris was phased out of the rotation entirely
Ball security was Monte Morris’ calling card
and the primary reason Phoenix brought him in
and deliberate in his reads — a stark contrast to the cross-court gamble passes that plagued so many of his teammates
Morris wasn’t looking to score when he attacked matchups; he was simply trying to set up the offense
Morris posted a 108.3 defensive rating on the season
especially considering he logged just 571 minutes and spent much of that time running with the mop-up squad
the main concern with Monte Morris is his size
even if he does bring a little physicality to the table
his three-point shooting took a noticeable step back
Morris shot just 36% from deep this season
a dip from the 42.4% mark he posted with the Timberwolves the year before
For a team that desperately needed floor-spacing and shooting from its backup guards
the door could open for the Suns to re-sign Monte Morris
keeping a steady ball-handler on the roster
Did his brief stint in Phoenix boost his value on the open market
Or will he look back on a season marred by dysfunction and decide he’s better off elsewhere
It feels like a true 50/50 shot that the Suns bring him back
Monte Morris never really got much of a chance to make an impact on the Suns this season
You can point the finger at Mike Budenholzer
What Budenholzer saw day after day in practice clearly didn’t convince him to keep Morris in the regular rotation
He lost his spot as the coach grasped for answers
the kind who can help you survive an 82-game grind and make a positive impact along the way
Could that be corrected next season if the Suns bring him back
That’ll come down to how the front office sees its vision for the roster and whether Morris fits into it
If you’re looking for a steady identity piece
Morris still feels like the kind of guy who can fill that role

The Ninth Circuit reversed the District Court’s judgment and the panel’s decision
finding that the District Court had specific personal jurisdiction over Shopify
which could significantly increase the number of jurisdictions in which e-commerce companies can be sued
even when the company’s globally or nationally accessible website does not have a forum-specific focus
Plaintiff Brandon Briskin is a California resident who used his iPhone’s browser to purchase athletic wear from an online storefront
He alleges that during the checkout process
the online platform required him to submit personal identifying information
Allegedly believing that the storefront generated the payment form over a secure connection
he submitted the personal identifying information
he was submitting his private data not only to IAB MFG but also to Shopify
although he never viewed the relevant “Privacy Policy,” had he done so
the policy would not have mentioned Shopify
“an e-commerce platform that facilitates online sales for merchants,” and that Shopify had installed “cookies” on his mobile device when he first viewed an item for purchase
These cookies allegedly tracked and stored Briskin’s personal information
his payment information and the location where the transaction was completed
Briskin alleges that Shopify then shared his private data with third parties without disclosure
Briskin’s putative class action complaint
District Court for the Northern District of California
alleges that Shopify’s conduct violated data privacy and access laws and constituted unfair deceptive practices
dismissed the case on the ground that it lacked specific personal jurisdiction over Shopify (Briskin had not asserted general personal jurisdiction)
a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit affirmed the District Court’s ruling
did not “expressly aim [its] suit-related conduct at [California].” The panel held that:
When a company operates a nationally available e-commerce payment platform and is indifferent to the location of end-users
the extraction and retention of consumer data
does not subject the defendant to specific jurisdiction in the forum where the online purchase was made
The Ninth Circuit voted to rehear the appeal en banc
A bipartisan group of 30 states and Washington
absent jurisdiction over e-commerce companies like Shopify
they would be unable to enforce their consumer protection laws against such companies
which use the internet to avail themselves of local marketplaces
the court applied the “effects test” drawn from the Supreme Court’s decision in Calder v
which requires that the defendant commit an intentional act that is (i) expressly aimed at the forum state and (ii) causes harm that the defendant knows will be suffered in the forum state
The parties disputed only the second prong of this test
and the court found that Shopify “expressly aimed its conduct at California through its extraction
and commercial distribution of the California consumers’ personal data in violation of California laws.”
Shopify argued that it did not expressly aim its conduct at California because it operates nationwide and thus was “agnostic as to the location in which it data-mines the consumers’ personal identifying information.” But the Ninth Circuit rejected this argument
holding that the “express aiming” prong of the Calder test does not require “differential targeting,” i.e.
which had required a “forum-specific focus.” The court also emphasized that Shopify conceded that its geolocation technology allowed it to know that Briskin’s device was in California when the cookies were installed
the court rejected Shopify’s argument
that the relevant jurisdictional contacts must be “the defendant’s contacts with the forum State itself
not its contacts with persons who reside there.” The Ninth Circuit found that
where the plaintiffs were “the only link” between the defendant and the forum state
Shopify was meaningfully connected with the forum state in a more than “random
[K]nows about its California consumer base
conducts its regular business in California
interacts with them as an intermediary for its merchants
installs its software onto their devices in California
The Ninth Circuit also found that Briskin’s claims arise out of Shopify’s contact with Briskin’s device
which Shopify allegedly knew was in California
and that the claims also relate to Shopify’s California contacts because the alleged injury would tend to be caused by Shopify’s contacts with California merchants and consumers
the Ninth Circuit found that the District Court’s exercise of specific personal jurisdiction over Shopify would not violate traditional concepts of fair play and substantial justice
the court rejected Shopify’s argument that personal jurisdiction in this context would be unfair because it “could lead to specific jurisdiction in all 50 states.” Although Shopify’s argument “may be true,” the court explained
expansive jurisdiction is “not unfair [] if the contacts Shopify makes in all 50 states are like its California contacts.”
Briskin could have far-reaching effects for e-commerce companies that collect data through a globally or nationally accessible website
such companies could subject themselves to specific personal jurisdiction in a forum whenever they provide services to consumers in that location
regardless of their platform’s geographical focus or lack thereof
e-commerce platforms could be subject to litigation in every forum in the country
at least when the site operator has technology allowing the operator to know a user’s location or when the site operator extracts a user’s data for commercial purposes
represents a departure from courts’ typical reluctance to find personal jurisdiction where products offered nationwide enter the forum due to a purchaser’s actions alone
Although Briskin is now established law in the Ninth Circuit
it remains to be seen whether courts in other jurisdictions will follow suit
E-commerce companies would do well to monitor such developments and consider whether they can distinguish the jurisdictional facts of the case from those that were dispositive in Briskin

One of the best things about the championship part of the season is seeing teams finally breakthrough after a long drought and some close finishes in recent years
So that's why you had to feel good for the Morris Knolls girls when they leveled up to win their first Morris County Relay Championship since 2006 on Thursday night at Randolph High.
The Golden Eagles won four events and scored in 10 events as they racked up 67 points to edge runner-up Roxbury for four points for their first county relay crown in 19 years.
Morris Knolls came agonizingly close to winning
finishing second by thee points to Mount Olive
with contributions across multiple events,'' said Morris Knolls head coach Peter Staluppi
"It was a close meet against a very talented Roxbury team
and the outcome came down to the final event-the 4x400 relay-as field event results were still coming in
I told our team before the meet to keep doing exactly what they've been doing all season which was to stay focused and process oriented
I believe we have the toughest athletes in the county
and any team looking to beat us would have to bring their absolute best
I reminded them that the plan was in place we just need to execute
Never give up - That's one of our mindset principles
and we say it before every practice. "I am incredibly proud of what our athletes have accomplished so far
The message on the back of our team shirts says
everything is earned,' and they are absolutely living that out
I'm excited to see how we finish the season."
The victory by completed a county relay sweep for Morris Knolls!!

Shows Off Lacy Bra Under Sheer Top During Boyfriend Akeem Morris' 29th Birthday Party: PhotosSource: @madonna/InstagramMadonna celebrated boyfriend Akeem Morris’ 29th birthday in a sheer top
Madonna made a statement for boyfriend Akeem Morris’ birthday bash
The 66-year-old music icon stepped out in style to celebrate Morris' 29th, wearing a silky champagne-colored outfit that included a sheer belted top, revealing a lacy bra underneath
The Queen of Pop looked every bit the glam legend as she paired the look with her platinum blonde curls
Madonna celebrated Akeem Morris’ 29th birthday in a sheer top and satin set
Madonna posed with Morris and YG Marley at the event
Another snap showed the couple making their way down a dimly lit staircase, with Morris — who’s Jamaican-born and works as a model, boxer and soccer player — close by her side. He kept things casual in a vintage Kareem Abdul-Jabbar jersey, dark shades and blue track pants. The two looked effortlessly cool as they exited together
The singer posted a loving tribute calling Akeem Morris her 'favorite Taurus.'
the "Hung Up" singer was seen cozying up on a couch with three of her kids — 19-year-old Mercy and 12-year-old twins Stella and Estere
A sweet moment was captured mid-party when her boyfriend hugged the singer tightly. Madonna closed her eyes and returned the embrace. In another pic, she was sitting right on his lap.
“Happy Birthday to my favorite Taurus,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

Madonna has 'has fully integrated Akeem [Morris] into her life and family,' a source said
sharing a collection of photos and clips from the party
He showed love to the singer and thanked her with a heartfelt shout-out
“All I can say is thank you. Thank you wifey ❤️,” he wrote on May 4.
He added, “Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with me last night. Thank you to those who worked behind the scenes to create such an unforgettable vibe. It meant so much to have the people I love and respect all in one room. It was a special night, and the energy in the room was nothing but love.”

The public outing comes as the couple’s romance continues to make waves — especially because of their nearly 40-year age gap
Although reports surfaced that Madonna and Morris had quietly broken up in October
"Madonna ran into the same issue with this boytoy as she has with all of her recent men. The age difference became an issue. They come from different time periods,” a source told Daily Mail at the time
Madonna also took a photo with YG Marley at the event
But things have taken a turn since then, as the couple reportedly rekindled their romance earlier this year
The source added, “He’s very respectful of all her kids and doesn’t try to throw his weight around or ever tell them what to do. It might sound really awkward considering he’s the same age as Lourdes, but they’re all so used to their mom having a much younger boyfriend that it doesn’t faze any of them.”

Ward's borderline obsession with chasing greatness was something the Titans identified throughout the pre-draft process
North Texas head coach Eric Morris was the first to see potential in Ward after discovering him as a no-name recruit at a 2019 Incarnate Word throwing camp
The then-head coach at UIW convinced the strong-armed
raw quarterback to accept a scholarship to the program
Not that Ward really had alternative options
Ward's journey really began there at Incarnate Word
an off-the-beaten-road program in San Antonio
but Ward was nowhere near a complete prospect given his experience in the run-heavy "Wing-T" offense in high school
a circumstance that prevented the West Columbia native from having any resemblance to a normal recruiting process
On a mission to familiarize ourselves with Ward's historical upward trajectory
Titan Sized recently spoke with Coach Morris
Coach Morris and Incarnate Word offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich swiftly embarked on a journey to develop Ward from raw thrower of the football to technical assassin following his arrival on campus
While the world was struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic
coach Morris saw an opportunity for Ward to thrive behind the scenes in unnatural circumstances
It was a mere coincidence that paid dividends
“Footwork was the biggest thing in the beginning," Coach Morris told Titan Sized
he never had played in shotgun [formation] before
He’s always had such a naturally gifted arm
He had just never really played in an offense out of the shotgun before
His feet were a little out of whack at times
It was about honing in on his footwork to start."
the natural gifts were evident as coach Morris and Leftwich focused on correcting the technical warts of Ward's skill set
The off-script magical ability that would eventually lead to Ward throwing for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns at Miami this past season was already revealing itself in spurts
who he helped recruit and coach at Texas Tech
“Cam is like [Patrick] Mahomes at times,” Coach Morris continued
“He gets away with some things because he can drop his arm to crazy angles
He can do freakish things with his arm talent
We slowed everything down and built the mechanics from the ground up.”
Even with Ward’s footwork qualifying as a positive work-in-progress
there were still elements of the offense Ward had to master
Morris played for legendary college football head coach Mike Leach at Texas Tech
Morris' playbook drew inspiration from Leach's "Air Raid" offense
The Air Raid system is heavily reliant on quarterback and wide receiver chemistry
requiring post-snap adjustments based on coverage
Asking a quarterback who was fresh out of the Wing-T offense to master the Air Raid was a tall task for a developmental project who had little-to-no experience reading coverage
but tall tasks have never prevented Ward from perfecting the challenge at hand
Ward’s development benefited from adjusted guidelines due to the Covid-19 pandemic
"When Cam first started learning the offense
we weren’t allowed to do any 11-on-11 due to the pandemic," Coach Morris added
"The first two-to-three weeks after he arrived
That allowed him to mentally adjust to the game
call his reads out and see the [offense] in a slowed-down environment
"We were eventually allowed to practice seven-on-seven
where Cam could practice [what he learned] against the shell of a defense
We started playing 11-on-11 nearly three months later
We were shocked by where he was [at that point]
Cam is also a kid like Patrick [Mahomes] who spends a ton of time in the meeting room
He wants as much knowledge as possible."
Titans head coach Brian Callahan is now tasked with crafting an offense that best takes advantage of Ward’s abilities
he isn't shy about what he likes and doesn’t like
Mere moments after hearing his name called
1 overall quarterback asked Callahan to incorporate “Switch Verts” into the playbook
Switch Verts is another staple play-call of the Air Raid offense
Ward’s request to incorporate the play into Tennessee’s playbook perfectly captures his maturation from raw project to master of whatever offensive system coach Morris put in front of him
“He’s a big Four Verticals guy," Morris said
"He wants to push the ball down the field and show off his arm talent
He didn't have the opportunity to do that in high school
He’d have no hesitation [telling you what he likes]
"That [Switch Verts] was his best play
He was able to rip seams better than any QB I've ever been around
That’s something they didn’t really run at Miami [until he got there]
I thought Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson did a great job incorporating some of the things Cam really liked
He runs that [Four Verticals] better than any QB I’ve been around."
The consistent year-to-year improvement is something Coach Callahan identified on tape
Having worked with quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Peyton Manning
Callahan knows what it's supposed to look like
“You saw him get better every year, and that was the thing that I went back to,” Callahan recently told Albert Breer
and he had a little less talent around him
But he became more disciplined every year he played
Morris isn't intimately familiar with Coach Callahan or his offense
but he felt extremely confident in the match between Callahan and Ward throughout private conversations with his star pupil throughout the pre-draft process
"Cam expressed terrific confidence in Callahan during their pre-draft meetings," Morris told Titan Sized
He didn’t feel like [the Titans] would try to restrict him or his playmaking [ability] in any way
They’ve expressed tremendous belief in Cam."
A vision that Ward will relentlessly pursue improvement like he did from Incarnate Word to Miami
The Titans fully expect history to repeat itself

Around 6 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2023, a white Ford Escape pulled out of rush hour traffic on Figueroa Street, stopping along the curb outside Fixins Soul Kitchen.
A man stepped out of the Ford, wearing a dark jogging suit with white trim, white sneakers and a baseball cap with the words “No F— Given” on the front. A black balaclava covered his face as he entered the restaurant.
L.A. Live’s security cameras captured what happened next: In front of about 20 diners and employees, he walked up behind a man eating alone at the bar, aimed a pistol with two hands and shot him in the back of the head.
At a court hearing Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Department detectives revealed how they identified the alleged shooter and a second man accused of coordinating what police called a “very well-orchestrated execution.”
Detectives testified that surveillance footage, license plate readers and an analysis of cellphone and car location data helped solve the case — but only partially.
California
The alleged assassins behind several recent murder-for-hire cases in Los Angeles were sloppy, authorities say, leaving behind a trail of evidence that links the killings to Chicago gang disputes.
It remains a mystery why the two defendants, alleged gang members with prior convictions for violent crimes, would target Sidney Barrett Morris, who until shortly before his death held a high-level post at Cal State Northridge.
In search of a motive, detectives got a search warrant for the victim’s CSUN email account, court records show. Morris’ colleagues told detectives he’d been investigating players on the school’s men’s basketball team who’d been accused of sexual misconduct and harassment. His co-workers theorized the investigation had something to do with his homicide.
The tip went nowhere, the lead detective told The Times.
A review of public records related to Morris, 43, revealed no obvious signs of a life in distress. No rancorous divorces or business disputes, restraining orders or recent financial trouble — nothing connecting him to the two men accused of his murder.
“I’ve been screaming to the D.A. myself: ‘What is the motive?’” Theida Salazar, a lawyer representing one of the suspects, said in an interview. “My client’s got no ties to this guy.”
Morris’ killer could have hardly picked a more conspicuous place to commit murder.
L.A. Live is bristling with cameras. Armed with a clear shot of the getaway car’s license plate, authorities found the Ford Escape two days later, set ablaze on the side of a road in Palmdale. The Hertz rental had burned down to its frame, precluding the collection of DNA evidence, Det. Joshua Byers of the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division testified at the hearing Wednesday.
Some police officials are pushing back after a wealthy community gifted the department scores of controversial, high-tech cameras that scan license plates.
Police license plate readers showed the Ford was in South Los Angeles the morning that Morris was killed, Byers wrote in a search warrant affidavit reviewed by The Times. Detectives obtained footage from that morning, which showed a woman park the Ford outside a building on 2nd Avenue before entering one of the units.
The unit was rented by a man named Santana Jermaine Kelly, Byers wrote.
Kelly, then 49, had been released from prison in 2019. According to a 2001 probation report reviewed by The Times, the Baldwin Village native was a longtime member of the Rollin’ 40s gang nicknamed “Ice Man.”
Santana Kelly, shown in a 2018 photograph, is charged with orchestrating the murder of Sidney Barrett Morris. (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) First arrested at 16 for carjacking a woman, Kelly went in and out of the California Youth Authority and state prison until 2000, when he was charged with following Asian patrons of the Hollywood Park Casino to their homes and robbing them, the report said.
After serving 19 years of a potential life sentence for fleeing police, Kelly was released, court records show.
The morning that Morris was killed, Byers wrote, Kelly was seen in the surveillance footage with two distinctive hats. He wore the baseball cap later seen on the shooter, the detective wrote. He was also holding a wide-brimmed straw hat that detectives saw on the footage from L.A. Live, obscuring the face of the getaway driver.
At the South L.A. building, detectives also caught a glimpse of the killer’s face, Byers testified. A man entered Kelly’s unit wearing the same clothing as the shooter. “Mask, jacket, pants, shoes — everything is identical,” Byers testified.
Phillip Clark, shown here in 2015, is charged with shooting Sidney Barrett Morris as he ate dinner at Fixins Soul Kitchen on Nov. 28, 2023. (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) At L.A. Live, the killer was careful to cover his face. But in South L.A., he pulled down his balaclava, Byers testified. Detectives identified him as Phillip Pasco Clark, then 33, a convicted robber and burglar.
Arrested on suspicion of Morris’ murder on March 22, 2024, Clark called a woman from jail. “I ain’t never shot nobody,” he declared in the recorded call, which was played in court. Nor, he said, had he ever been to L.A. Live.
Clark said he told the detectives that, as a member of the Carver Park Compton Crips, he didn’t get along with the “40s,” a reference to Kelly’s gang.
Federal prosecutors say the fearsome reputation of the Rollin’ 60s gang allowed Eugene “Big U” Henley to intimidate businesses and people for decades.
The woman, furious, told Clark he shouldn’t have said anything. “Stop talking!” she yelled.
“I don’t shoot people,” Clark said. “I’m a robber. I love you.”
Detectives arrested Kelly the same day at his Palmdale home, about 10 miles from where the getaway car was torched, Det. Martin Mojarro testified. Inside his black Dodge Durango, detectives found the baseball cap from the video, Byers said.
Searching through Kelly’s phone, Mojarro testified, he found two videos time-stamped a month before Morris was killed. The detective recognized where they were filmed: an alley behind the Westchester apartment complex where Morris lived.
“This is the place,” Kelly said as he drove around the building, according to Mojarro. “Hmmm. It’s kind of secure. There’s red cameras. So he’s tight-knit. As you can see, there’s cameras everywhere.”
The second video showed a parking garage beneath Morris’ building. “I think it’d be better to get him at the other location,” Kelly said, according to Mojarro.
Kelly and Clark have both maintained their innocence. The getaway driver, whose face was covered by the straw hat, remains unidentified, according to Byers’ affidavit.
Although detectives made arrests within four months of Morris’ death, they were still no closer to knowing the motive.
Morris went through financial problems in the past. He declared bankruptcy in 2013, stating in a petition that his $76,000-a-year salary as human resources administrator at the University of San Diego couldn’t cover the $224,000 he owed in student debt, unpaid taxes and personal loans.
But Morris’ fortunes had seemingly improved by 2019, when he was hired as CSUN’s director of equity and compliance with a $150,000 salary, according to school records reviewed by The Times. By 2023, his annual pay had risen to $185,000. He had also opened a restaurant, B-You, about three blocks from L.A. Live.
Some of Morris’ colleagues at CSUN theorized his death was connected to his work. Acting on their tips, Byers in April 2024 wrote a search warrant for his CSUN email account.
The powerful prison syndicate known as the Aryan Brotherhood has moved to expand its reach, testimony and court records show, relying on gang called Public Enemy Number 1, for brutal killings, kidnappings, and drug deals on the streets of Southern California.
Before his death, Morris was investigating the CSUN men’s basketball team, Byers wrote in a search warrant affidavit. According to university records reviewed by The Times, a female student accused a basketball player of sexual assault and two other players of retaliation after she reported it in July 2023.
Morris also ran a consulting business to provide Title IX compliance training. When he hired his own firm to advise the school at a cost of $12,000, it led some CSUN officials to accuse him of self-dealing, Byers wrote in the affidavit.
Morris resigned three weeks before his death.
Byers wanted to read Morris’ emails. The notes may “provide insight into the investigations conducted by the victim,” he wrote in his affidavit, as well as reveal “any concerns, threats or fears the victim may have had.”
But after reviewing the emails, Byers told The Times, he did not find evidence to connect Morris’ death to his work at the university.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Jonathan Chung, who is prosecuting Kelly and Clark, said he still does not know the motive for Morris’ homicide.
Carmen Ramos Chandler, a spokeswoman for CSUN, said university officials have “no reason to believe that his death is related to his work.”
The school will continue to cooperate with the LAPD, she said, “to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The preliminary hearing for Clark and Kelly will continue May 22.

One of the larger new industrial parks in Morris County is about to open for business in one of its smallest towns
The Lincoln Equities Group on Tuesday announced the "unveiling" of Lincoln Logistics Morris Plains
comprised of nearly 500,000 square feet of space divided between two warehouses off Tabor Road (Route 53)
replaces a business campus that was once part of Big Pharma's sizeable corporate presence in the county
The buildings demolished there were most recently owned by Johnson & Johnson
and before that by Pfizer and Warner-Lambert
part of a history that dates back to the 1950s
"It's been quite a while and we're excited to welcome them to the community," said Morris Plains Mayor Jason Karr
Karr was unaware whether any leases had been signed for the property to date
but he said construction was complete and "they received their certificate of occupancy."
Inside Lincoln Logistics Morris PlainsThe two rectangular buildings now dominate the stretch of Route 53 connecting Route 10 to Speedwell Avenue and downtown Morris Plains
The 66-acre parcel also includes a newer office building
PCCP LLC and Vision Real Estate Partners acquired the properties in 2018 for an undisclosed sum. Plans that year to build a fragrance factory at the location were abandoned after fierce opposition from the public flooded planning board meetings with protesting crowds
one covering about 225,000 square feet and the other 270,000
Each building features 40-foot clear ceiling heights
35 dock doors (facing each other) and parking for cars and trailers
“Our vision was to deliver a state-of-the-art industrial park that will set a new standard for design
efficiency and connectivity in the region,” Lincoln Equities CEO Lance Bergstein said in the announcement
"With its strategic location and best-in-class infrastructure
this project is well positioned to support the evolving needs of a wide range of users across e-commerce
Too much warehouse space? The Morris Plains site is opening after a boom in warehouse building in New Jersey and amid signs the need for such space may have already peaked.
The share of unused capacity in Garden State warehouses reached its highest level in more than a decade last year
thanks to a surge in construction combined with economic uncertainty over the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs
demand for shipping and storage has also slipped back toward pre-COVID levels
The real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield said in an early January report that the warehouse vacancy rate in northern and central New Jersey at the end of last year was 9%
the highest since the first quarter of 2013
The firm noted a “surge in new supply” of 13.1 million square feet of “mostly vacant" warehouse space

the exclusive leasing agent for Lincoln Logistics Morris Plains
said in the announcement: "We're seeing significant demand for modern
scalable industrial space in the Tri-state area
superior design and proximity to key transportation routes
this development checks all the boxes for top-tier industrial users," Monahan said
Three more warehouses are approved in neighboring Parsippany and more warehouse projects are in progress throughout Morris County, including a 585,000 square foot facility replacing the former BASF headquarters building along Route 80 in Mount Olive
The same developer is building another 200,000-square-foot warehouse nearby
Still, applications for warehouse space also fell significantly in Morris County last year 2024
according to a report by the county Planning Department in April
It was the second straight yearly decline for warehouse proposals
Warehouse projects peaked in 2022, including an application to build 2.5 million square feet on the site of the former Hercules munitions plant in Roxbury
That plan was withdrawn after more than a year of presentations to the Roxbury Planning Board did not generate the rezoning approvals needed
warehouse applications thinned from just over 2 million square feet in 2023 to about 726,000 last year
after a courageous battle with brain cancer
