'I'll give it a good nudge and see where it gets me' says Australian of 350 mile overnight event in Kansas
Lachlan Morton’s return to The Traka 360 after coming second in 2022 may not have gone to plan but
while the anticipated long day on the bike at the flagship European gravel race ended prematurely
another even longer effort is just around the corner at the North American race that has long loomed large in the discipline
"I broke my wheel about 150km in so that was it, day done," the EF Education-EasyPost rider told Cyclingnews in Girona the day after his Traka 360 race plans went awry.
so I got a lift from a local guy out there who was headed back to town and then tracked down the crew."
saying on social media that "things felt like they’d come together really well this last week" and that was even despite the fact that the Australia EF Education-EasyPost rider had been running a packed schedule in the lead in
"I mean this year's been totally different
with the exception of maybe the last two weeks leading into this when I finally had a bit of like time where I'm not travelling," said Morton.
There will, however, be another patch of concentrated preparation before Unbound XL
the 350-mile (563-kilometre) distance event which will start on Friday
running through the night and into the next day.
I should have just under 2 weeks before the event," said the US-based rider
"And then I'll get a bit more specific for that
so try and do a few longer rides and play with the lights and just hone in a bit more."
It will be a different beast to train for than Unbound 200
given that there will be more hours and less intensity but that changed dynamic and experience is a big part of the appeal.
"I sort of felt like I’d gotten everything I wanted out of the 200
I don't think I could have a better experience
and XL has always looked like a cool variation of the 200," said the 33-year-old who has made a career out of turning his back on the expected pathway
he is far from a stranger to long-haul efforts
with the most recent in his long list of extreme distance efforts being a record-setting 14,200km lap around Australia
Does that mean he’ll be coming into the race which was last year won by Sebastian Breuer as a favourite
“I'm sure there's people who have more experience on that course and are maybe more honed in on that event than me

Mike Elias and the Orioles decided against offering ace Corbin Burnes the deal he wanted
Burnes took a longer-term deal from the Arizona Diamondbacks
which was closer to home and less AAV than he would've gotten from Baltimore
The Baltimore Orioles rotation is a mess
The O's have plenty of young talent that ought to be performing better
Morton and Zach Eflin were their final answer for losing Burnes
Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodriguez are well established and possibly future aces
Morton has received the majority of the blame for Baltimore's rotation struggles thus far. He was brought in from the Braves as a top-of-the-rotation talent
but he is little better than a bullpen piece at this juncture
The 41-year-old ran out of gas near the end of last season with the Braves and hasn't been the same since
Morton did not enjoy his free agency experience
as Atlanta wasn't interested in a reunion
as Morton has since been removed from Baltimore's rotation and sent to the bullpen
as Morton made his first appearance from the O's pen

Morton gave up two runs in relief for the O's on Sunday. In just one inning of work he gave up three hits and two earned runs. His ERA is headed in the wrong direction as well, and it now stands at an alarming 9.76. Just a few weeks ago, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde called the Orioles pitching 'embarrassing'
“You’re just not going to be able to win games that way,” Hyde said
“You’re going to win them once in a while because you’re going to outscore teams
but that’s not how you win Major League Baseball games.”
The 41-year-old has pitched in the bigs for quite some time
but has rarely faced a challenge like this one
‘We’ll give you 30 starts to get this right,’ I’ll get it right
how negatively do I affect the team during that process
It’s just some of the things that are going wrong right now -- like just throwing strikes
A move to the bullpen hasn't improved Morton's production
this suggests the O's front office was wrong to begin with
At 13-20 and 5.5 games back of the AL East-leading Yankees
the Orioles cannot keep blaming Morton for their issues

Charlie Morton should've retired in Atlanta
Lachlan Morton ranks as one of the best (and popular) multi-discipline endurance riders on the planet and he lined up for the start of the Traka 360 race having recently set a new record for riding around his native Australia
His Cannondale SuperX LAB71 was ready for a fast day out
The SuperX has recently been revised to increase tyre clearance with the official figures now safely allowing for the 50mm tyres Morton rode at Unbound 2024
His machine was built using an interesting mix of road and gravel components
but it also featured a very specific selection of puncture repair solutions
with each being ready for deployment quickly in the heat of battle
2024's Men's Unbound 200 winner was unfortunate to suffer a serious mechanical mid-way through Saturday's race

We were all a little down on this team after Corbin Burnes' departure
but the O's were in the playoffs just a few months ago
This is the team with perhaps the deepest pipeline of young
led by a perennial MVP candidate in Gunnar Henderson
It has not been the season folks expected from the Baltimore Orioles
the O's are dead last in the AL East at 12-18
It's too early in the season for outright panic
the path forward — for this season at least — is grim
but there isn't a more exploitable rotation in MLB right now
not on a team trying to contend for a World Series
The recent Kyle Gibson addition plainly did not help
Baltimore eagerly awaits Zach Eflin's return
but there's only so much one man can do in this situation
I'm not convinced the O's would be much better off with Burnes on the roster right now
The main culprit for their rotation struggles has been 41-year-old free agent signing Charlie Morton, who inked a one-year, $15 million deal to author what is probably his last MLB chapter. Morton had been a paragon of consistency for the Atlanta Braves over the years
Brandon Hyde officially demoted Morton to the bullpen this week
but it sounds like the 18-year vet may need a bit more time to process his new reality
For more news and rumors, check out MLB Insider Robert Murray’s work on The Baseball Insiders podcast, subscribe to The Moonshot
and join the Discord to get the inside scoop during the MLB season
Morton spoke frankly with reporters after the demotion
He's looking forward to throwing more frequently
but doesn't think his issues are related to the quality of his stuff
"I’m looking at it as an opportunity to maybe throw a little more frequently than I otherwise would, and try to get dialed back in," Morton told Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner
Charlie Morton on his short-term move to the bullpen: “I’m looking at it as an opportunity to maybe throw a little more frequently than I otherwise would
and try to get dialed back in.”Morton maintains his stuff
Look, Morton probably has access to more metrics than us mere mortals. But a brief glance at his Baseball Savant page reveals that his metrics are down across the board
so I'm not really sure what he is getting at
his WHIP has spiked from 1.33 to 2.18 and well
he's giving up 12.5 hits and 2.0 home runs per nine innings
Morton's impact has fallen off a cliff
There's a reason not many pitchers last this long at the highest level of professional baseball
Morton deserves immense credit for pitching into his 40s
and what little zip the righty had left a year ago has evaporated
the strikeouts are down — it's all bad
Maybe a bullpen stint does allow him to reconfigure his approach and build some positive momentum, but the O's cannot count on it at this point. It's time for GM Mike Elias to hammer the trade market for viable upgrades before it's too late and a teardown becomes the only logical path forward

Baltimore has officially demoted 41-year-old Charlie Morton to the bullpen

guitarist Mark Morton discusses his journey recording his new solo album ‘Without The Pain.’
Leading the charge is “Brother,” a heartfelt track that sees Morton teaming up with outlaw country heavyweight Cody Jinks and co-writer Travis Denning
The song delves into painful family estrangement while the rich southern textures and introspective lyrics mark a clear departure from the pulverizing riffs fans might expect
with an all-star cast of friends joining Morton
Without The Pain is far from being something Morton just does to fill time away from his main gig
In our latest Cover Story
V13 spoke to Mark about the making of Without The Pain
and the journey he took to reach this point in his career
I finished reading the book a couple of weeks ago
It feels like the album starts where the book ends in terms of you getting clean and going through that period of your life
followed by the solo record following on from that
Is that the case and when did the ideas for the record start to come together
There’s some truth to that but it’s not intentional
I think what you’re picking up is probably accurate but it wasn’t necessarily deliberate other than the sense that it’s my creative trajectory
I think there are parts of the album that are personal
so you will hear things that are part of my life
Some of it’s just stories that aren’t directly related to me or aren’t autobiographical in that sense
The album and the book were happening simultaneously
The book I was writing for two and a half years
I sit at my desk and write more a bit at a time
I have this Lamb of God monster that I’m always a part of
So it’s not as organized as it may seem like
where I’m going to sit down and write a book
now I’m gonna sit down and do a solo record
It’s all swirling around and happening all at once
I never stop working if I’m being honest.”
You said you were writing the book and the album side by side
Did one inspire the other or did you sit there and think do you know what that would make a good theme for a song
“I think they all just come from a lot of the same lived experience
I wasn’t writing a companion piece to the book or anything like that.”
Given that some of the themes on the record are personal – ‘Hell and Back,’ ‘Brother’
it feels like a quite an honest and reflective record regardless of whether the themes are personal or not
When you took yourself out of it and listened to the record how did you feel
“It’s easily one of my favourite pieces of music that I’ve ever been a part of
lyrically the spirit and sound and style of this record is more personal than anything
that I’ve done because this is the music that I’ve had with me all my life
I was in tune with that stuff before I was ever even into heavy metal
It’s always been with me and it’s culturally a part of who I am in my upbringing
None of this is a slight against heavy metal
I’m so proud of what we do with Lamb of God and so challenged
this music is the music that I come home and listen to when I play guitar at home
It sounds like what you hear on this record.”
V13 Cover Story – Issue 90 – Mark Morton
The Black Crowes was one of your bands growing up
“I worked with Marc Ford and Steve Gorman on the last record
I did a song with Mark Lanegan called ‘Access’ and Steve Gorman played drums on that
Marc Ford did some of the lead work on that.”
particularly ‘Brother,’ and ‘Hell and Back’ feel personal
You went through quite a dark time leading into the book and the album
what was it like digging back into those memories and bearing your soul on the record
To juxtapose and go back to the Lamb of God catalogue
A lot of the Lamb of God songs have lyrical contributions from me
I even cite reference some of it in the book
I’ve always been bearing my soul so if you wanna know where I’m at take a look at the last few songs I put out.”
“I think there are parts of the album that are personal
I mean it’s pretty stark that difference between the two records stylistically
I think they’re formatted very much the same in that it’s me as the primary songwriter and then pairing with guest artists and almost entirely guest singers
That’s a similarity I think for me as the artist creator of the projects
The biggest difference for me in a practical sense was on the first album I went into the process with very clear
defined ideas of what each song was going to be in terms of the writing
and as much as possible the lyrics locked down
There are some cases where the singer wrote the lyrics on those records
but in a lot of them I wrote all the lyrics and on this record
I would say intentionally and based on experience with much more open-ended approaches to these songs
I had the three-chord progression and I had the verses written
I didn’t have a chorus but I went in not stressing about the fact that it wasn’t a complete song
I knew it was a great idea so Travis and Cody sat down and took those ideas and left the room four hours later with a completed song
That’s indicative of how I approached a lot of the material in this record
and with a much less rigid vision for what I thought the song would be when it was done
I find that in this stage of my life and my career
it is a much more enjoyable approach to songwriting and to making music.”
The last album was written during quite a dark period in your life
Was this record easier to write or more enjoyable
It was very much the beginning of a new kind of movement for me
I was cresting this hill of real dark times for me
I was starting to break out of the clouds there and I could tell that was happening and it felt free to be creative and to have a place to put all that energy and that was joyful
Josh Wilber is one of my best friends in the world
He and I always joke that we find excuses and find reasons to work together because he lives in LA and I live in Virginia
It was a reason to just dig in and work on music with my friends
Without The Pain was the same just in a different place
Mark Morton ‘Without The Pain’ Album Artwork
On the last album you had people like Chuck Billy
it feels more focused on the style of the record
did you have an idea of who you wanted to work with
“In some cases but what I knew was the genre of people I wanted to work with
I wanted to do things a little more hard rock melodic
a little radio rock but it didn’t wind up being that way
There were influences and voices involved in the project that felt like there should be some metal on there
You have to think of things from a lot of different angles and that was my first step out as a solo artist
I didn’t know if anyone was gonna bother to listen or take it seriously
So there were influences and voices involved and I think correctly so that was suggesting that there should be some more metal stuff on here to make sure people open it up
I did not feel compelled to do that on this record because I had the experience of Anesthetic
Anesthetic gave me the confidence and independence to make a record like Without The Pain which
“I was starting to break out of the clouds there and I could tell that was happening and it felt free to be creative…”
Do you think it made it easier for them to buy into what you wanted to do with this record and get onboard straight away
I think for my part I sought those people out
I wouldn’t have wanted to make a metal record with Charlie Starr from Blackberry Smoke
Charlie and I have been friends for a very long time
We met at Download our buses were parked next to each other
We struck up a friendship and kept in touch and
So I asked Charlie to sing a song on Anesthetic
It was the song that I sang ‘Imaginary Days’
I asked Charlie to sing that and when I sent it to him
I sent him a demo of me singing it and he said to me that I sing that one
When I sent him ‘Come December,’ I’m glad I waited because it’s one of my favourite songs on the record
Working with some long-time friends must have made the whole thing think a lot more of an enjoyable experience…
some friends and some people that I just struck up friendships with on Anesthetic
I got to work with Mark Lanegan and had never corresponded with him before I just cold-called him
Mark and I became real friends after that and worked together on his last record
I wrote and recorded two songs with him on that
It’s one of the great takeaways of doing things like this is the friendships that you make and
it’s always great to work creatively with friendships you already have.”
What was it like working with Troy from Mastodon on this record
Mastodon and Lamb of God have been peers all along
We just toured with them not long ago around North America with those guys
That was one of the easier calls to make because Troy is a good friend.”
Going back to the song ‘Brother’ on the album
it feels like a hugely personal song but it also feels like anybody who is in that situation or a similar situation could probably relate to it
Do you think that could be said about the rest of the record that it’s a record lyrically that somebody could put on and relate to
it’s very different from what I do with Lamb of God
These types of songs are a little more directly narrative even if it’s not autobiographical
we characterized it as ‘Brother,’ but there’s this universal experience I see of people with estranged family members
it can be any version of these things where you see these unexplainable and very tragic disconnects in families and I see that all around me and you talk to people and most people have their version of that
I think the best songs take something that’s a personal type of phenomenon
but it presents them in a way where a listener can relate to it and make it into their own story
I think whether the songs are autobiographical or not
in this style of music you can make a narrative
lyrical composition that people can relate to
I find things tend to be a little more abstract and a little bit more about setting a mood or a tone and invoking some very primitive emotional thing that often not always is less directly narrative.”
“I think the best songs take something that’s a personal type of phenomenon
but it presents them in a way where a listener can relate to it and make it into their own story.”
some of the lyrics that you’ve written have been very
It feels like reading the book that your relationship with Randy was quite a rollercoaster relationship
He got himself clean and sober before you did in the book
Did that relationship change then and has it changed since you got yourself clean
Close to the point where you hear people say we’re like brothers
He moved a couple of years or so ago to North Carolina
but I see him very frequently because of the band and we were texting yesterday or the day before
We stay very much in touch and we’re very close.”
“Probably but it was all worth it to get to where I am now
I think there’s a comment that this is a record you wanted to write all your life
It’s a genre of music that’s been hugely important to you and it’s shaped your life
What does it feel like to have that record out and be part of that genre
It doesn’t matter whether it is commercially successful or not
it’s been underscored for me what it means when people say they’re humbled by working with people because the team
the community of people that showed up to help me with this project and participate in this project top to bottom
I continued every step of the way to be stunned at the people who were signing on to help
Not just the artists, but including the artists, but also the people who worked on it behind the scenes. The people that helped put it out, the Record Store Day people that have made it a vinyl exclusive for that. It’s such a great thing to be a part of there. The label Snakefarm Records for coming on and taking on this project and everyone in my management team who I worked to death with Lamb of God
knowing that it wasn’t gonna be near as big commercially as a Lamb of God thing
but they still took it on and they still believed in it
the huge community of people to make something like this happen that most people don’t see and don’t need to see for me that is one of the big takeaways how everyone just jumped on board and has been really supportive and really believed in what I was doing creatively
It doesn’t so much feel like they’re behind the record as much as they are behind me as a person
I catch myself saying this a lot and it’s true
I tell my management guys all the time and the people at the label
and even folks that were recording this with me
Thank you for believing in me because you didn’t have to.’ There were so many people that were so generous with their time and their expertise and their energy and their spirit and their creativity their work and their advice and their insight and their perspective
This project isn’t gonna make anybody rich
It’s very much about the spirit and the creativity behind it
a lot of love was involved in this thing to allow me to be a hippie and I think you can hear it in the songs.”
but I have been reminded that the joy in music is making the music
Everything that comes after that is cool but once I’ve made the music
It becomes yours and anyone who’s listened to it
It was a personal passion project for me…”
You said Anesthetic felt like the crest of a part of a journey for you
I’m excited to get this record out into the world
In your book during downtime from Lamb of God
you’d turn up at bars and play country gigs
Do you see yourself doing that as a more serious thing
I don’t ever aspire to a time where I don’t play music
I was playing music and writing songs before anyone was ever paying attention and I will continue to be doing that long after people have stopped paying attention.”
if you had to sum up Without The Pain in a couple of sentences

Lachlan Morton returns to Girona for Europe’s premiere gravel race
ready to race the Traka 360 on his old stomping grounds
Lachy called the Catalan cycling capital home for years when he was a road racer and has an atlas of every rocky singletrack
and wild boar path through the local hills ingrained in his memory from all of the exploring he did when he lived in town
he’ll set off for 358.5 kilometers around that map
looping north around Figueres and then back down the coast for a hilly finale in the Gavarres mountains around Girona
Since his Croatian adventure, racing the 4islands Epic with his mate Tsgabu Grmay from Team AMANI, Lachy has been relaxing in his old hometown
riding his favorite trails with old friends
He is sticking to his own laid-back approach to the race
though the Traka has fast become the blue riband gravel competition in Europe
“It feels a bit like going to a national championship as an under 19,” Lachlan says
but I'm having fun the way I'm going about doing it
this year is equally as much about the experience around the race and the times we've been able to spend here
getting out on the bike and just enjoying what it means to ride bikes here
I feel like I've been finding a nice balance for myself.”
What Lachlan loves about Girona is the diversity of terrain you can ride right out the backdoor
Meet your mates for a coffee and roll out of town
and you can just let your imagination go wild
“The options in terms of routes are basically unlimited,” Lachy says
“There are so many different surfaces and zones that you can connect
where it's pretty smooth and fast on all these flowy gravel roads
Or you can go into the hills where it's more chunky and you can make it as gnarly or as adventurous as you'd like
It is motivating to get out and explore it and see it
The more willing you are to dive into it and start exploring a bit
the more you find and the more you get out of it
there's a huge cycling community here now and the infrastructure around it makes life very easy for someone visiting
It is definitely a pretty idyllic destination to come and ride.”
Girona is buzzing with freehubs at the moment
Lachy is excited to see how far gravel racing has come since he got in the game
just with thousands of athletes racing behind them for pure fun
That’s always been the heart of racing gravel for Lachy
When the going gets tough 300-plus kilometers deep into the Traka
“Everyone can approach the race how they want,” Lachy says
There wasn’t a right approach in terms of what training you should do
people have sort of cracked the code and realized that you just have to train like a pro road rider and then ride the gravel bike a little bit
there is definitely the potential to miss a lot and miss some of the more rewarding aspects of riding gravel bikes on the whole
What is really is cool about the Traka is that it brings people from different disciplines together at an elite level though
You've got mountain bikers and road riders and gravel racers
all showing up in one place and racing hard
but he still thinks he can give the best gravel racers in the world a run for the prizes on Friday on his favorite red Catalan dirt
“For anyone who's just trying to get around the 360 course
maybe at a pace that is faster than last time or at a pace that's sustainable
you have to be pretty conservative in the beginning,” Lachlan says
the pace is dictated by everyone who's racing
you have to buy into it and just keep the hand in the fire for as long as you can
That's the way these races generally go
Whoever can hold the hand in for the longest wins
and so many things are going to happen in the course of the race that it is sure to be fun and interesting and we’ll have good stories to tell by the end.”
Follow Lachy’s Traka adventure on our social channels this week and watch out for the film on our Far Beyond YouTube channel
The Traka 360 is tomorrow and Lachlan Morton is going full send
The reigning Unbound champion will race his brand new Cannondale LAB71 SuperX over Girona’s toughest dirt
Lachy’s Traka 360 bike is built to thrash around corners at the front of the peloton
gnarly climbs and shred white-knuckle descents
Lachy is laid back about just about everything except his bike set up
He’s been pushing the sport of gravel racing forward for years and this is his favorite bike yet
It is a bit lighter and faster and more aero
For the Traka 360, Lachlan will ride 54/40 FSA chainrings with an 11-34 cassette. Never one to follow trends, he rides 175mm FSA cranks for extra torque and uses a 40cm wide Cannondale System R-One Carbon cockpit
He’ll stick with his trusty Vision Metron 45SL wheels for the Traka
Lachlan’s strategy is as simple as it gets
“The general idea is to try and squeeze in as big of tires as possible,” he says. “I’m riding 44mm Vittoria Mezcals that basically max out the capacity of the frame
Those are my go-tos in normal race conditions
It's nice to just run something you know and that you're comfortable with
Lachlan is going one heck of a long way tomorrow
With 360 kilometers of Catalonian dirt ahead of him
he is ready to throw himself into the fray
knowing he has the best gravel bike in the game
Watch for his Knog Frog Strobe Front Bike Light to emerge from the predawn darkness at the front of the pack and stay there as the sun rises over the Gavarres

The Orioles used Morton out of the bullpen Tuesday night
The Orioles announced Dean Kremer, Tomoyuki Sugano and Kyle Gibson as the probable starters for the upcoming weekend series against the Kansas City Royals
Morton's last start came Saturday against the Detroit Tigers
when he gave up three runs and five walks in 3⅔ innings in taking his sixth loss
He hasn't pitched longer than five innings in any start thus far
Morton is 138-129 with a 4.08 ERA in 390 career games (387 starts) for six teams, most notably the Pittsburgh Pirates (2009-15)
He earned All-Star nods in back-to-back seasons with the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays in 2018 and 2019
The zero trust digital transformation company said Tuesday it also intends to undergo reorganization and create two new business units to further optimize the technical expertise of both capability areas
Morton will leverage his 25 years of experience in the aerospace and defense industry to spearhead the growth strategy for the two business units
He will focus on expanding IPTA’s core capabilities and its existing work within the Department of Defense
Before joining IPTA, Morton served as executive director of the technology center and director of strategic capture for aviation at Odyssey Systems
He also worked briefly at Kutta Technologies as a senior proposal manager and at Acronis SCS as director of business development
Morton served in the Army for over two decades
He was most recently the director of standardization and compliance for unmanned aircraft systems for over seven years
He also served as an electronic warfare systems integrator and maintainer and an unmanned aircraft systems maintainer
“Adam is a proven and seasoned leader of highly technical teams with invaluable industry experience that will help align IPTA’s capabilities and expertise to best deliver on DOD priorities,” said Bill Williams

Morton's latest struggles create more rotation questionsApril 20th
BALTIMORE -- Plenty went wrong for the Orioles in Sunday’s loss -- as indicated by the 24-2 score and two position players (utility man Jorge Mateo and backup catcher Gary Sánchez) combining to pitch the final two innings
It was the most runs allowed by Baltimore since a 30-3 loss to Texas on Aug
It’s not what you want to do on Easter Sunday in front of your home crowd,” manager Brandon Hyde said after his club dropped the finale to Cincinnati in lopsided fashion at Camden Yards
It’s difficult to compete with a rotation that has the highest ERA in baseball (6.11) and has combined for 10 outings of fewer than five innings in 21 games
it results in nearly insurmountable deficits for the offense to come back from
So a big reason for the Orioles’ 9-12 start -- which has featured only one series win and no winning streak longer than two games -- has been the performance of their rotation
One of the most confounding aspects of the O’s starting-pitching struggles has been the performance of Charlie Morton -- an 18-year MLB veteran who signed a one-year, $15 million deal to bring reliability to the staff
He was expected to eat innings and pitch at a level that would make him a sturdy presence in the middle of the rotation
Morton is 0-5 with a 10.89 ERA after five starts -- the most recent being Sunday’s 2 1/3-inning outing in which he allowed a season-high seven earned runs
The 41-year-old’s ERA is the second-highest by an O’s pitcher through his first five appearances for the team (with a minimum of 20 innings pitched) behind only Ty Blach’s 11.32 mark in 2019
Morton can’t seem to solve his early-season struggles
but his curveball isn’t nearly as sharp as it has been in recent years
who gave up a leadoff home run to Elly De La Cruz
a two-run single to Jake Fraley and an RBI single to Austin Wynns during the frame
Wynns’ knock (the second of six for the former Oriole) chased Morton after 68 pitches
“But I don’t doubt the fact that I can get it right
At the moment, the Orioles don’t have many other choices than to let Morton work out his issues. Their rotation is again down to four pitchers -- seven are on the injured list -- and their only starters with MLB experience at Triple-A Norfolk are Brandon Young (who debuted Saturday before getting optioned a day later) and Thaddeus Ward
Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball
(Kyle Gibson, who has made three Minor League starts after signing late in Spring Training
will join the rotation soon to get it back up to five.)
Baltimore also made a considerable financial commitment on its 2025 payroll to bring in Morton
so it’s too early to consider cutting ties
noting he feels even better than he did during the second half of the 2024 season
The rest of the Orioles’ clubhouse still has faith in the veteran
I have no doubts in Charlie,” catcher Adley Rutschman said
‘We're on to the next,’ and I have full belief in him that he's going to go out next game and throw a seven-inning shutout
the up-and-down nature of the first half could continue and put Baltimore in a spot it doesn’t want to be in by the time the summer months arrive
“I see a bunch of guys coming in with a positive attitude,” veteran center fielder Cedric Mullins said
“That’s all I really want to see day in and day out to give us the best chance out there.”

The O’s haven’t closed the door on the 41-year-old returning to a starting role
but they’re hoping a change in role can help get him back on track
who signed with the D-backs in free agency
Virtually nothing has gone right for the Orioles’ staff in 2025
Morton is hardly alone in terms of struggles
He’s appeared in seven games — five starts
and last night’s mop-up work — and been tattooed for a 9.45 ERA in 26 2/3 frames
while his 18.8% strikeout rate is his lowest since 2015
Morton’s typically strong ground-ball rate has evaporated; he’s sitting on a career-low 36.7% mark and has averaged a career-worst 2.03 homers per nine innings pitched
He’s also displayed career-worst marks in average exit velocity (91.6 mph)
opponents’ barrel rate (11.1%) and hard-hit rate (48.9%)
The rest of Baltimore’s rotation hasn’t been quite as bad, but it’s still been a mess overall. Dean Kremer has been torched for a 7.04 ERA while working with career-worst strikeout and swinging-strike rates
Povich was terrific his last time out but still has an ERA of 5.04
but it’s hard to see that continuing when he has the fourth-lowest strikeout rate among all qualified big league pitchers
McDermott suffered a lat strain in February
Suarez’s shoulder flared up in March
Bradish and Wells had UCL surgeries performed just days apart last June
the hope will be that Povich can build on his last solid outing in tonight’s series finale versus the Yankees
against a Royals club that has struggled to score runs in 2025
That gives them the short-term luxury of skipping the fifth spot this next time through the rotation
but the O’s only have one off-day from May 6-28
Baltimore Orioles Newsstand Charlie Morton
Charlie landed a few good shots to his chin
Yea Morton hasn’t been the same since his hamstring transplant
My understanding is the elephant cadaver was the a close match due to length
Sadly it seems it has affected Mortons leg kick
I remember when Morton repeatedly stated that he wanted to retire young
I don’t fault him for pocketing an extra 50M or so
If a team wants to pass on better younger safer players no reason to turn down 15m
Sugano outperformed everybody in that rotation
I bet O’s fans are thrilled they went out and spent $15 million on this bum instead of signing Flaherty
Let’s not let facts get in the way of a good rant though
I don’t know that i’d call anyone a bum
just didn’t work like Morton *should* have been better from his fairly ageless history
lianafinck.com/products/should-letterpress-print
The other day Rex Hudler mentioned on the Royals broadcast that it’s because the majority of the batted balls are hit to the middle of the field
And he noted – as I have here for years – the the most important player is the C; then the SS
I got tired of watching the O’s when Gunner circled a ball at SS a few weeks ago
ball bounced before it got to 1B (players do that now) – but Mountastle couldn’t judge the spin until the ball hit the ground and it bounced out of his reach (he was stretched out on the bag with his foot on the base)
fundamental baseball is that you throw the ball overhand in that situation so that the spin is going forward and not sideways – it gives the 1B a true hop
But watch many small market teams that play smart
winning baseball with players that have little fanfare about them: Rays
and now the Reds (the FO works with Francona)
Fans here don’t seem to understand the the O’s are not in competition with themselves
They have to play – ON THE FIELD – against teams that are there trying to beat them
I honestly blame myself for inviting Samuel/Dracula to bury me with all those words
the mute was so satisfying silencing that smug
Samuel muted me a couple of years ago when I laughed at him for claiming that Kevin Newman was worth more than Dansby Swanson in free agency
Samuel used to brag about having “muted more than 100 ” on the site
Daring to disagree w/Samuel and incurring his wrath is frightful business——really need sarcasm font on here
On another thread Samuel just told me that “23 year old Gunnar Henderson is not 23 year old Carlos Correa”
The Correa that’s never hit 30 HR in a season like Gunnar did last year
has never walked as much as Gunnar did last year or run as much
We wouldn’t know if Samuel was running the team
240 million dollar contract because he’s so valuable
The team would hustle and display sound fundamentals but the staff ERA would be 9 and the team batting average .170
Earl and Cal Sr are spinning in their graves
2 All Star nods and 155m dollars in career earnings
I probably wouldn’t call someone a bum
unless you have a resume that can top that
What makes you think Flaherty wanted to play for the O’s
The Tigers currently have the best record in the AL….and Flaherty is one reason why
Flaherty didn’t want to play for Baltimore after the way he was treated before
It took the great coaches in Detroit to fix the issues and now everything is great for him and Detroit
Good teaching coaches can make all the difference
How many games of rookie ball did you play
Yet here you are calling Charlie Morton a “bum”
and over 2000 k’s and an 18 year career
along with the 8 up votes so far showing total disrespect
Lucky they’re an AL team and all the other teams in the league are weak
Does a 41-year-old still listen to coaches
There’s not much positive to say about Drew French
…and then moves into my basement so we can stay up late
drink zero sugar cream soda & talk about what a managerial genius Earl Weaver was
37 year old 5th starter Kyle Gibson will save them
The headline should read “Orioles move Charlie Morton to his home in Bradenton FL’
Don’t worry Braves may pick him back up at some point in the season lol
What’s the over/under of Hyde making it to September
Not saying he’s to blame but 0 post season wins and a 2025 that’s gone south
If things continue to go the way they are–and there’s no sign of anything improving–I can vision him being gone by the AS break
(Braves fan here)Watched the game and man I’ve never seen him pitch that high in the strike zone his whole time with the Braves
Literally almost all his pitches were mid to upper zone
Pitching so high with his movement the ball drops into the sweet spot of hitters it seems right now
Idk if it’s just Baltimores style of coaching but it’s not working for Morton
I doubt he’s throwing meatballs and getting shellacked just because Baltimore’s coaches prefer it
They don’t want to swallow the contract
The inevitable trade to the Braves for PTBNL coming soon
Literally one of the worst GM s in baseball
Got lucky with draft and then wasted a good window
They can always trade away and start a new rebuild
Passed on stuck in single A Druw Jones for Holiday
Passed on that guy Austin Martin for Kjerstad
That’s two picks he went against the consensus and his guy’s in the majors and the consensus is a bum
Screwed up going with the consensus Adley over Witt
I think he has a record in his first draft the 2019 draft for guys to make the majors or something
And he’s done ok as a trade deadline seller
Rubenstein can wait till August 1 for replacing Elias
Maybe they should have seriously addressed the rotation just a bit
they should move him to the mexican independent league
This has to rank as one of the worst off-seasons for a contending club in recent memory
a combined 37 earned runs allowed in 30.1 innings (41 ER in 31.1 IP if you want to count Gary’s 1 pitching appearance this year)
As a Pirates fan who wants to see their team build off their strong rotation (whereas you probably want the O’s to do more with their young hitting core)
I feel your pain of lackluster offseason moves
Nothing is more frustrating when your team isn’t just cheap
All the talent and the coaches havent developed it
They could have resigned burnes and traded for cease like everyone wanted
but the O’s would still be floating belly up with them too
I always love to point out that Morton has been pulling this “I’d rather retire to spend time with my family” thing for like 7 years now- when he first started this “I’m gonna retire to spend time with my family” bit
he’d made about $41M in his career- he’s “almost retired” himself into an extra $107.4M in career earnings ($120M if the 2020 season hadn’t been pro-rated)
because he’d have to settle for like 1 year/$8M as a bounce back candidate and that wouldn’t be worth it to him going into 2026
2024 was an option year that Braves picked up
That option was on an extension for 2023 season that was signed during the 2022 season
Those salaries were already determined regardless if he was pondering retirement in the offseason
They were option years because the Braves didn’t want to negotiate every single season
Adam LaRoche was in the midst of a solid career being a 20-30 HR hitter with what was likely 5-10 years left of productivity and large paychecks and he had this weird incident where he brought his kid to the stadium every day and the team asked him to stop doing that
essentially kicked his kid out of the club house and LaRoche promptly retired that day
walking away from what was left on the $12M he was owed that season and I believe there was another $13M guaranteed on an additional year and he was in the midst of a productive campaign
Players can walk away literally whenever they want to
An NFL player walked off the field in the middle of the game and said he’d had this instantaneous epiphany that he was done with football- in the middle of a mid-season game
Charlie Morton can literally quit/retire whenever he wants to
regardless of any years or dollars on a deal and once he officially calls it quits
the salaries are no longer an obligation- so this was more of getting that pesky annual re-negotiation out of the way for him- but he’s still used that year-to-year thing to juice his salaries
I’m aware Morton or any player can retire when they want
Your original comment reads as tho he used it as a negotiation point to bolster salary
Which him already being under contract obviously was not the case
Perhaps trade a few prospects for a quality starting pitcher
Offering Mountcastle last of season is why you’re here
Kyle Gibson lost half a WAR run in 1 start
The Orioles have to be the most disappointing team in baseball right now
They were banking on retaining Corbin Burnes
Its still early in the season but the outlook for this season in particular is not good
It was optimistic at best of the front office to take flyers on vets one year deals
while expecting injured starters to return and produce at their best capabilities from the get go while also not expecting more injuries to occur
The Sugano one looked like a solid risk reward type of deal from the beginning but man did they ever overestimate some of the other guys
I imagine Sugano gets dealt at the deadline if my O’s keep sinking like I expect they will with the lack of reliable decent starting pitching and the bats still not getting it together after they completely fell off the map the stretch run of last year
In my opinion you might have to clean house as far as the coaches and manager go
They had co-hitting coaches last year and got rid of one of them and they are still struggling to hit
And then when some players have a good game at the plate low and behold Hyde takes them out of the lineup for the next game
Just wild times right now for my fellow O’s fans
Not the first starter to go to the pen to work some things out
His stuff is still well above average – his command has been terrible
I got a hat signed in 2010 by Andrew McCutchen and Charlie Morton
Never would’ve guessed those would be the only two guys on that 2010 squad still in MLB in 2025
That was a long time ago in baseball years
If you had told me in 2010 two guys from that 2010 Pirates squad would be in the league in 2025
I’d have guessed McCutchen and Jose Tabata of all people
but it would’ve been awhile before I guessed Charlie Morton
Mccutchen doesn’t surprise me at all
he’s still an above average player and was a legitimate star in his prime
AA is lying in wait ready to pounce when Charlie is DFA’d
What would be wrong with getting a new messenger
The 2010 Orioles finally freed itself from the inept Dave Trembley/Juan Samuel garbage that was clipping along at a .305 pace
Buck Showalter took the same bunch of guys and a tired bullpen 34-23 down the stretch – the 2nd best record in the AL and 3rd best in MLB
There’s no reason for so many of the young guys to be in a funk
8-4 during that stretch is not out of reach
that puts them at 21-24 with help on the way for this desperate rotation
and Hyde deserves a chance with an actual rotation
What an awesome off-season for the O’s

Charlie Morton appears to be staying in the bullpen
Morton has worked in relief in his last two appearances
following opener Keegan Akin in Detroit in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader and holding the Yankees to an unearned run last night in 2 1/3 innings
Shortstop Gunnar Henderson dropped a line drive with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh
Not much went right for the Orioles in a 15-3 loss
but Morton lowered his ERA to 9.45 and can provide much-needed length
A fifth starter isn’t needed until May 10 due to a few more off-days
though a rainy forecast this weekend could cause some shuffling
“We haven’t closed the door on him starting still,” said manager Brandon Hyde
“We’re trying to get him going a little bit
I wasn’t expecting going into the game that he was going to be able to pitch and he completely saved us
So for him to go 2 1/3 innings after throwing 80 (pitches) just a few days prior
I thanked him multiple times because he allowed me to not use other people
“That was the best he’s thrown all year for me
I loved the aggressiveness in the strike zone and how he threw the ball
So we’re gonna continue to probably use him in the bullpen here for short term and then we’ll kind of see where we are as things kind of shake out
We’ve got a couple off-days to play with coming up.”
Morton was told about the plan to have some shorter spurts in the bullpen for the immediate future
“But I didn’t know that he was going to be available yesterday and he went down to the bullpen to start the game and we called down and he said he wanted to pitch.”

Hyde hasn’t contemplated Kittredge’s role but knows that the veteran right-hander will be “really valuable” after posting a 2.80 ERA last year in 74 appearances with the Cardinals and signing a $10 million contract

to shoot buzzer-beaters in a championship game that played only in his mind
That’s what drove me to be a baseball player
because I felt like I wanted to be something more than what I was.”
And that’s what still drives Morton to play
His children are now of the age to be shooting buzzer-beaters in the driveway or pretending to walk it off in the ninth — although they would probably pretend to be Freddie Freeman
As six bad outings stack on top of each other
the veteran Orioles pitcher was asked if he was still enjoying baseball — if
amid all the head-scratching video review sessions
the long home runs against him and the mounting pressure he does his best to stave off
Morton still enjoyed coming to the yard every day
The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.
For 18 years he has pitched in Major League Baseball
That can be a difficult thing to turn away from
even when results aren’t where he wants them to be
Especially when he’s as flummoxed as anyone as to why he’s pitching this poorly now when baseline metrics — the numbers
showing how well Morton can still break off a curveball
When Morton walked into the visiting clubhouse at Comerica Park in Detroit on Sunday morning, one day after appearing in relief rather than as a starter
he was posed with what could’ve been a yes or no question
halfway through a winding answer that redirected itself onto me at one point
“Is it because you have a ton of fun doing it and you’re just happy all the time and you just enjoy every minute of it
And you look forward to waking up every day and going to class to learn how to write and coming and interviewing baseball players all day
I think that’s probably not the only reason you’re doing this.”
he went back to that little boy in the driveway
the urge to be on the big stage in the big moment
And his mind shot back to a start last year with the Atlanta Braves that almost guaranteed he wasn’t ready to call it a career
On Aug. 8, 2024, the Milwaukee Brewers scored eight runs off nine hits in 2 2/3 innings against Morton
When Morton walked off the mound two months later for what might’ve been the final start in a long career
even as more poor performances with Baltimore pile up around it
I know I can be better than that physically,’” Morton said
It skewed everything to a degree where I wasn’t satisfied
I walked off the mound the last time — who knows
if I had pitched halfway decent in that game
I don’t know if I’d even be here right now
But I walked off the mound for the last time
So Morton accepted the offer this winter to pitch for the Orioles
What came next is poor viewing: a 10.36 ERA in 24 1/3 innings before a relief appearance Tuesday
Baltimore has lost all seven games in which Morton has pitched
although his 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen Tuesday were valuable
and maybe that’s a glimmer of better results to come
The fact he’s searching for answers in this manner comes as a surprise to him, because for the last decade, Morton has performed at a much higher level than he ever did in his 20s
to make the first six games an aberration rather than a career-ending stumble
hitters held a .741 slugging percentage against his curveball
which has been a critical offering for Morton over his career
The baseline metrics of spin rate and shape and velocity are good
And he doesn’t know why there’s a disconnect between the two
“I’m not sure how many people at 41 years old can throw what’s coming out of my hand,” Morton said
“What’s coming out of my hand at 41 years old
if you told me that when I was 25 I would be 92 to 97
have had stuff come out of their hand that well
if you had slid over my TrackMan sheet and said
‘This is where your stuff is at 41,’ I would’ve said
‘I’m gonna have a pretty good year with that.’ Because that stuff plays
It leaves Morton to pore over video and analytics
trying to find some reason for why this is
He thinks there must be a disconnect in timing that alters his release point just enough to where his command is putrid
His 15.9% walk rate entering Tuesday was in the fifth percentile
“He’s thrown a lot of baseballs in his career
but we also need him to be sort of comfortable in his own skin,” pitching coach Drew French said
“And I know that there’s something that he’s feeling from time to time that he really likes
and I think he’s just trying to recreate that a little bit more often.”
What stood out about Saturday’s performance in Detroit is that it actually was better
He wasn’t the sole reason the Orioles lost that game
French emphasized how the curveball was “more competitive” out of Morton’s hand that day
The Orioles seem hell-bent on making this work rather than cutting Morton loose
“The curveball is just something he has to have,” French said
but the walks made his appearance “sloppy,” a word Morton said with distaste
He has been far from a sloppy pitcher in his career
Morton’s strikeout-to-walk ratio was 3.07 — a good mark
The command issues at play this season are out of character
I’m not trying to get too fine,” Morton said
he recognizes that he hasn’t been overly aggressive
“How many times have I just tried to go middle?” Morton wondered
“That’s where the mentality of the pitching is part of it
because that’s aggression in-zone and going after a hitter.”
Maybe Morton needs to find that aggression — the feeling that he has nothing to lose anymore
‘What’s it going to take for you to feel comfortable
What’s it gonna take for you to leverage counts a little bit more often
And what’s it going to take for you to know your curveball is nasty and just trusting it?’”
He’s felt that way multiple times over the years
Morton pitched to a 7.57 ERA in 79 2/3 innings
Would he be able to make the adjustments required to warrant his place in the majors
Morton ended his time in Pittsburgh with a 4.81 ERA
he couldn’t have known his career would go on for another decade
Morton became a two-time All-Star in his mid-30s
He earned the right to remain a major leaguer
“I’ve had seasons where I went out there and I felt like my career was on the line,” Morton said
“I felt like I had more to prove than anyone on the team I was on
and the future of my career in baseball was on the line
That’s not something I was necessarily looking forward to
“There have been times I went out for a playoff start and I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to it at all
There were plenty of times I went out and it was — I don’t enjoy that anticipation
Morton doesn’t do this for the adrenaline rush or even the enjoyment
He does it more for the “responsibility,” the weight he feels when 25 other players
a handful of coaches and thousands of fans watch each pitch with hope
Morton fought for this opportunity since he was a child
even if the game seems harder for him from the outside
Turning away from this game is an unknown that Morton has never faced
does Morton feel like he’s pitching for his career now
“Your dreams are crushed and your means of making a living are in jeopardy and the time that you’ve spent is seemingly — not wasted
but wasted in the sense that your talent and your work didn’t create an outcome that you’re OK with or that jeopardizes your well-being
That’s not where I am in my career anymore
the desire to be part of a group and contribute to that group and the challenges that the group is facing
and hope that you walk away not only knowing you gave it your best shot
during the 20-minute conversation at Morton’s locker at Comerica Park
The only certainty is that Morton is trying — really
He’s studying where this has all gone wrong to begin the year

After taking the top podium spot in last year’s Unbound 200
the Australian pro sets his sights on the self-supported 350-mile ultra endurance category this year in the Flint Hills
And this was on the heels of completing the seven-event Lifetime Grand Prix race series
Rather than following a traditional race schedule
Morton keeps things interesting for himself and his fans with what he calls an “alternative calendar” that includes everything from gravel to MTB wrapped up in epic record-breaking endurance attempts and self-created philanthropic endeavors
he outlined a plan with an international focus that emphasizes variety where “it’s as much about being around the experience of the race as it is about competing” as stated in a recent press release.
While Morton’s Far Beyond program lays out the cyclist’s continent-bouncing agenda
with 15 races around the world – from Colombia to Bhutan
Kenya to Sweden – there is apparently still room for surprises.
I got the scoop a few days ahead of today’s Unbound XL announcement and managed to catch up with Lachlan for an hour-long special edition podcast episode where we discuss his recent change in plans
future record-setting attempts (including one he will not be taking on any time soon)
and even some philosophical musings about keeping the stoke alive.

the Baltimore Orioles were looking to emerge as one of the American League's premier contenders this season
Coming off a 91-71 record and a trip to the postseason in 2024
With all the young talent the Orioles have, it seemed like their championship window was starting to open. They just needed to bring in a couple of starters to fortify their rotation to be true World Series contenders
While they were not as aggressive in their pursuit of Corbin Burnes replacements as fans hoped
they did bring in Charlie Morton on a one-year
While the expectations for Morton were not high
his tenure as an Oriole has gone far worse than anyone expected
the Orioles seemed to have buyer's remorse
This has led many to wonder who the Orioles could have signed instead of Morton
Here are three pitchers that Baltimore surely wishes it could have on its roster right now
Jack Flaherty was one of the handful of pitchers who were available late in free agency, as he did not reach an agreement with the Detroit Tigers until February 7th
He signed a two-year deal worth $35 million
which is an average annual value of $17.5 million
While this is slightly more than what the Orioles offered to Morton
it would have put the rotation in a much better position
he's pitched to a 3.34 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 11 walks
He was their big acquisition at the 2023 trade deadline
his tenure in Baltimore did not go as they had hoped
pitching to a 6.75 ERA over 34 2/3 innings
However, what should've given the Orioles some confidence that his brief tenure in Baltimore was a fluke has been the improvement of his slider. According to Baseball Savant
opposing hitters had a wOBA of .399 and a batting average of .333 against the offering
the pitch has generated a wOBA of .292 and a batting average of .182
a pitch that hurt him a lot when he was in Baltimore
Perhaps those changes don't happen if he returned to Maryland
but it's clear the Orioles could have used his arm atop their rotation

Matthew Boyd has turned his career around after being non-tendered by the Tigers in 2021 and dealing with several injuries between 2022 and 2023
The Guardians took a chance on Boyd last June
as he posted a 2.72 ERA over 39 1/3 innings
This earned him a two-year $29 million contract with the Cubs
Boyd has picked up right where he left off in 2025
pitching to a 2.54 ERA over 28 1/3 innings
A big reason for Boyd's turnaround has been the improvement of his four-seam fastball
his fastball has been his most trusted pitch
batting over .260 against it throughout the southpaw's career
and opposing batting average has dropped to below .235
Baltimore's reluctance to sign Boyd makes sense considering he underwent both forearm flexor tendon surgery and Tommy John surgery since 2022
they gave more money to a pitcher on the wrong side of 40
Unlike the previous two pitchers mentioned
the Orioles could have signed Heaney and still have money left over to sign another player
The Pirates gave Heaney a one-year deal worth $5.25 million
That's $9.75 million less than what the Orioles gave to Morton
They could have given Heaney that contract and still have money left over to bring in another arm for the rotation
Heaney has been one of the few bright spots on a disappointing Pirates team
he has an ERA of 2.50 with 31 strikeouts to nine walks
they were even better before his last start
It's been a season for Heaney where everything has been working in his favor. However, his most effective pitch has been his changeup
He's used it 21.2% of the time and it has generated a wOBA of .152 and a batting average of .125
While it's unknown if these pitchers would have the same success in Baltimore
it's clear the Orioles' rotation would be in a better place with Heaney instead of Morton
The Orioles are struggling in 2025 thanks to the decline in their rotation
It's clear they should have been more aggressive over the offseason
Whoever can hold the hand in for the longest wins,' says Morton of challenge ahead at Europe's flagship gravel event
The Australian rider last lined up the Traka 360 in 2022
where he came second to De Marchi in what was the second year the distance
which sees even the fastest spending around 12 hours on the bike
He has now returned to what had once been his European home base in a year that has seen him soaking up a packed schedule of diverse events
“It feels a bit like going to a national championship as an under-19,” said Morton
but I'm having fun the way I'm going about doing it
Morton started the season at RADL GRVL in Australia
where he enjoyed a beer in the sun with his fellow competitors after tackling the race
and then criss crossed the globe as he took in an array of events from the Transcordilleras in Colombia
The Hills in Italy – where the post race indulgence was instead a glass of prosecco – and Sea Otter Gravel in the United States
it wasn't a matter of fine-tuning his form before The Traka 360
but he was instead racing the 4Islands MTB Epic in Croatia
helping Tsgabu Grmay tune up his skills in preparation for the mountain bike events at the Life Time Grand Prix
this year is equally as much about the experience around the race and the times we've been able to spend here
I feel like I've been finding a nice balance for myself.”
The training may not have been finely tailored ahead of the Traka 360, which is part of the Gravel Earth Series
but with Morton in familiar terrain and fuelled by the fun of the bike
and so many things are going to happen in the course of the race that it is sure to be fun and interesting
and we’ll have good stories to tell by the end,” he concluded

launched 11 missions with humans into space
[Blue Origin Launch]: New Shepard has cleared the tower
the most recent mission saw the first all-female crew since Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova flew solo around the earth in 1963
On board this mission in 2025 were celebrities like Singer Katy Perry-
the actor who played Captain Kirk on the original Star Trek also went up and found the experience so moving…
[William Shatner]: What you have given me is the most profound experience I can imagine
Dean Regas: But what's really going on here
And what are private space companies contributing to the greater mission
Could all this be one small step on the way to a larger leap to Mars
From the studios of Cincinnati Public Radio
and this is looking up the show that takes you deep into the cosmos or just to the telescope in your backyard to learn more about what makes this amazing universe of ours so great
My guest today has delved deep into the world of private space travel
a lead editor at The Economist and author of The Moon: A History for the Future
if you sensed any hesitation in my voice when describing the Blue Origin missions
I'm not completely on board with all this stuff
called the New Shepard after American astronaut Alan Shepard
I'm being really untechnical because technically it's high enough
It seems like it's just going where some people have gone before
I so want this to be something where we're sending people into space and that maybe someday I'll go into space
the public reaction to the all-female astronaut mission
[Stephen Colbert]: Perry and Lauren Sanchez have vowed to go full glam
Which will mark the first time anyone has ever journeyed to space in full glam
if you want to really look for inspiration
it's made me revisit that space flight of Valentina Tereshkova
She spent three days up there and orbited the earth 48 times
the most memorable moments were when I piloted the spacecraft manually
Just knowing that such a complicated machine actually abate feminine hands made me happy for womankind
can private space companies send people to Mars
Most sky watchers were kind of betting on Elon Musk and SpaceX to lead the way
led to dramatic rocket explosions strewn above the Caribbean
it kind of led more people to wonder when we could actually see humans on the red planet
Our guest today has pondered this more than most
and I'm also the author of some books about space
including Mapping Mars and The Moon: A History for the Future
Dean Regas: I want to start off with an article you wrote for The Economist that tries to answer the question, Can Musk put people on Mars? I mean
can he or any individual corporation accomplish this
in terms of the timeframe that he's currently talking about
should in principle be able to get people to Mars
And it's possible in principle to build things on Mars that might allow them to come back
but I don't think it can be done in one presidential term
What are the main obstacles you think Musk and SpaceX specifically face
They then need to show that they can refuel the Starship on orbit
They need to get the Starship on orbit with enough capacity to take cargo and people to Mars
Can get through the atmosphere of Mars and can land on a rough bit of Martian dirt that has not been prepared in any way without any sort of human control because Mars is too far away to sort of like flight by remote
They also need to get there in a way that keeps the astronauts moderately fit and healthy during a reasonably long exposure to very low gravity to microgravity
And they also need to protect those astronauts against radiation during the journey to the extent possible
And then eventually they need to bring them home
they need to get the refueling systems to work
they need to be able to fly starships on a really regular basis
They need to be flying these big old spaceships as frequently as they're currently flying their much smaller Falcon Nines
but are there things that you would say that these private space companies are doing well
Are there things that they're contributing to the greater goal here
it's certainly true that we wouldn't even be having this conversation if it weren't for the fact that SpaceX has done remarkable things that no one would've expected of it
And the idea of taking what was originally a scrappy little startup and not only making a world-class rocket from scratch
developing a system for reusing that rocket on a regular basis and then getting to the stage where you can launch them a couple to three times a week from Spaceports on both sides of the United States…
looking at the history of Boeing or Lockheed or any of the other big space companies
no one would've expected a company to do that
And they've been brilliantly helped by the fact that NASA encouraged this sort of entrepreneurialism setting up a system whereby they would pay for services rendered rather than just agree to pay whatever it costs to get the rocket that they said they wanted
But no company has done anything as well out of that
opening up of the system as SpaceX has done
is a Mars mission maybe in some ways too big for a private company
You kind of indicate that Elon Musk has maybe seen some writing on the wall and is aligning himself with the current administration for a little help
even if you're the richest man in the world
if you are sort of like deeply involved with the administration
you certainly wouldn't say no to a little bit of help
But SpaceX's stated goal has always been to put people on Mars
It’s one of the reasons that he's never taken the company public
Going back to your question about is Mars much more difficult
a mission measured in years rather than days or weeks or months
that much more difficult than going to the moon
The science fiction writer Robert Heinlein once said
you are halfway to anywhere,” and that's kind of true
The amount of energy you need to get up to Earth orbit is very high
it's basically more or less as easy to go to Mars as the moon
and that's largely because Mars has an atmosphere that will slow you down once you get there
you have to turn on your rockets and slow down yourself
on getting slowed down on Mars is really doing very much the same sort of thing as getting slowed down when you reenter the Earth's atmosphere as it's meant to do in its normal operations
The difficulty is that you have to sort of like keep people alive for months and years while this is all going on
But the real thing is the length of time people have to be out in space and vulnerable
Dean Regas: You're also the author of the book
What does exploration and habitation of the moon offer us
Oliver Morton: The thing about the moon is that compared to everywhere else in the cosmos
it's easy to go to and that's why it was hard to go there in the 1960s
but it would've been harder to go to anywhere else
one of the main reasons why the moon is attractive to people
it's also true that the moon has what we might call resources
But the moon plays a big role if you think that there's gonna be a space-based economy
which is large enough to make it worth your while to build mines and extraction plants on the moon
I don't honestly know if I think that's true
but I think people are definitely going to go back to the moon and see what they can see
The power of the moon is the idea of having something close by the earth that is so deeply
“magnificently desolate,” as Buzz Aldrin put it
And I think it's that poetry of the moon as not a world
but an un-world from which to see the world
drives the idea of going there and seeing and experiencing the moon as a place from which to think about life in a completely different perspective
America's program for putting Americans back on the moon is called Artemis after the sister goddess of Apollo
And when it was started in the first Trump administration throughout the Biden administration
one of the key points about Artemis was that it would expand the experience of Americans on the moon to include American women and people of color
And all that language has now been stripped off the NASA website because the idea of the value of a diversity of viewpoints is no longer one that government agencies are allowed to endorse
And I think that's terrible because what I really want from people going back to the moon is that sense of humans
looking back on the earth and looking around them at a cosmically ancient emptiness and understanding those two things together
I know you've talked to a lot of people about this in the know and thought a lot about it
Dean Regas: I think one of the common arguments made for establishing a human presence on Mars is that it can be our only refuge in case
Like the best day on Mars is still way worse than the worst day on the most extreme part of Earth
We'd have to change Mars to make it more earth-like
but that idea of changing an entire planet gives me
Why wouldn't we just improve Earth instead
I gotta look at this from a personal perspective
We're not gonna be able to transport 7 billion humans from Earth to Mars
am I special enough to get a seat on that escape pod
Tell us what you think by writing to us at looking up@wvxu.org and let us know what job skills will get you to Mars someday

I hope that I can maintain what I feel now

Left-handed starting pitcher Justin Steele is out for the entirety of the season after making just four starts in which he went 3-1 with a 4.76 ERA
Now about three weeks removed from that news
it has become clear that the Cubs possess one of the very best lineups in all of MLB
That's largely thanks to the dominance of Kyle Tucker, acquired from the Houston Astros in a blockbuster deal over the winter
With no guarantees that Tucker sticks around past this season
Chicago has a unique opportunity to go all in for a World Series at the same time as they try to extend the window by convincing Tucker to stay
Steele's absence from the rotation makes it tough to view the pitching staff as currently constituted as that of a legitimate contender
but president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has multiple options to change that
The obvious one is to swing a trade to add another top-of-the-rotation starter, but the Cubs may already have that sort of player knocking on the door of the Big Leagues
the team's seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2022 MLB draft
sure looks like a guy who is ready to come up and show what he can do
Horton entered his start on Sunday with a 1.17 ERA across five starts
striking out 28 batters in 23 innings of work
The consensus Top 100 prospect delivered another stellar outing on Sunday against the Buffalo Bison, allowing just one run and two hits in six innings
The University of Oklahoma product is pitching like he has nothing left to prove in the minor leagues
and though it's likely that Chicago would ideally like to see more of his excellence over a larger sample
Horton only threw three innings in spring training
allowing one run while striking out and walking two apiece
If the Cubs call Horton up now and see what he has against Major League competition
that will provide Hoyer with some much-needed information ahead of the trade deadline
and the resources he has earmarked for the deadline can be used elsewhere
and Hoyer will know for certain that his club needs another high-level arm

Morton signed with the Orioles this offseason on a one-year
the 41-year-old owns a record of 0-6 and has a 9.45 ERA
He's struck out 26 batters across 26 2/3 innings while surrendering 28 runs
Morton finds himself designated to a bullpen role as he looks to iron out the kinks in his performances and get back on track
which has consisted of 390 pitching appearances
Morton has only come out of the bullpen on three occasions
Each of his last two appearances for the Orioles have been in relief
Baltimore used Keegan Akin as an opener ahead of Morton against the Detroit Tigers on April 26
though the right-hander was still credited with a loss after surrendering three runs and five walks in 3 2/3 innings
he pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief work during a blowout against the New York Yankees on April 29
the Orioles decided to make it official in relegating Morton to a bullpen role
though Hyde indicated the door was not closed on a possible return to the rotation for the 18-year veteran

Caitlin Baker broke down in tears Tuesday as she told members of the Texas Senate's criminal justice committee why she was opposed to a proposed bill involving changes to the Michael Morton Act
The bill would allow prosecutors to just provide relevant evidence to defense lawyers
Allowing only relevant evidence to be provided in the Morton case
is what led the killer to evade justice and later kill her mother
The act requires prosecutors to give defense attorneys any evidence that is material to the case
But district attorneys testified Tuesday that the proposed bill would help close gaps in the Morton Act and protect victims
More: House approves Michael Morton Act
requires prosecutors to open their files to defendants and to keep records of the evidence they disclose
who was wrongfully convicted in 1987 of the murder of his wife in Williamson County after a prosecutor withheld evidence that would have shown he was not guilty
Morton served 25 years in prison before he was exonerated in 2011
when DNA evidence showed that someone else had killed his wife
would change the act by allowing prosecutors to only provide evidence they think is relevant and allowing courts to withhold a defendant's request for evidence if the request is too burdensome or involves the security or privacy of any victim or witness
Huffman said Tuesday that the bill is meant to address problems caused by a Texas trial court decision in 2016 that allowed relevant evidence to be suppressed even though prosecutors had not knowingly withheld the evidence
Williamson County Attorney Shawn Dick testified Tuesday that he had problems with the issue in a case where someone was charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact involving four children
the prosecution realized that police had the defendant's cellphone in their custody
He said investigators found pictures of child porn on the phone
but a visiting judge said the phone had been in police custody too long and could not be presented as evidence
Huffman's proposed bill would prevent judges from "acting on a whim" to suppress evidence
and would put "guardrails" on the Michael Morton Act by requiring courts to make findings before they can suppress evidence that was not knowingly withheld
an attorney with the Innocence Project of Texas
said at the hearing Tuesday that he disagreed with the proposed bill because it narrows the evidence that prosecutors must turn over
Baumgartner said he also disagreed with the part of the proposed bill allowing courts to withhold a defendant's request for evidence if the request is too burdensome
"When there is limited discovery on this type of evidence," he said
More: Another life sentence for Norwood, and some comfort for victim’s family
A year after Morton was wrongfully convicted of his wife's death
Mark Norwood was later convicted of both killings
Caitlin Baker said Tuesday that Norwood should have been arrested in 1986 because the district attorney's office had the evidence in the Morton case but didn't consider it relevant and put the wrong man in prison
The evidence was a bandana that had Norwood's DNA mixed with Christine Morton's blood on it
"That her death was preventable makes it so much worse," she said
"I have to urge you to vote against this bill as written," she said to committee members
Morton said in a text Tuesday that he did not attend the hearing because it was "kind of scheduled at the last minute."
I flew to Austin on my own and met with Senator Huffman one-on-one to express my concerns." He did not provide details about what his concerns were
The committee made no decision about the bill Tuesday because it did not have a quorum present
It may vote the bill out at a later time to be presented to the Senate

after a rather comfortable B-Mod triumph a little earlier
Morton retained the Late Model lead by flirting with the wall coming off turn four on the final circuit
I don’t even know,” Morton said of the final lap with Ewing
“I seen him down on the bottom and we raced side by side there
I don’t think you like racing.”
Other feature winners were Kyle Slader (Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds)
Jesse Stovall (USRA Modified make-up feature)
Gary Clark (Hickamo Super Stocks) and Mason Beck (O’Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars)
Just as he did in the B-Mod feature a half-hour earlier
Morton started on the pole and set the pace
opening a one-second lead over Tucker Cox by lap five
Ewing moved into the second spot on lap six
with the first caution appearing a lap later to take away Morton’s 1.5-second lead
Ewing was able to take the lead on lap nine
taking advantage of Morton’s drift high entering turn two to draw close before using a slider in turn four for the pass
Ewing had a one-second lead over Morton when caution flew on lap 11
Morton regained the lead on the restart with a slider of his own off turn two
Ewing’s handing seemed to go away and Morton was able to extend the lead to 1.4 seconds
Then Ewing was able to get going again over the next few laps and worked his way back into contention by lap 22
Morton used the high groove and Ewing the inside line the rest of the way and Morton – sailing his Moon Brothers Rocket to the cushion near the wall in turn four coming to the checkers – held on to prevail by one car length
The second straight Hermitage Lumber Late Model win gives Morton the early season points lead in both divisions
had talked about running for a double track championship prior to Gene’s passing in January
but before Dad passed we talked about this,” Morton said
We’ve won both features on the same night (before) but we’ll try to race all year and maintain and try to be here at the end and try to be a double-point champion
I don’t think that’s been done
“We’ll shoot for the stars and see what happens.”
Morton leads all the way in B-Mods: The reigning track champion in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods is proving he’s the man to beat again
Morton led all 20 laps for claim the feature win by nearly two seconds over Jon Sheets
Morton roared to the lead from his front-row inside starting spot and had a two-second lead over third-starting Sheets when the leaders caught lapped traffic on lap nine
As the green-flag laps continued to click by
Morton’s margin peaked at 2.9 seconds on lap 17 as he kept picking off slower cars without a hitch
Sheets was unable to make much of a dent over the final three laps and settled for second
Morton said his first B-Mod feature win of the season was special as it was also his first in the car since his dad
Gene also was his long-time crew chief and a close friend of the Bloodline chassis owner and designer Terry Phillips
it’s huge,” an emotional Morton said in victory lane
noting how he lost his dad shortly after the first of the year
I have to thank Yeoman Race Engines and Bloodlines Race Cars
‘TP’ has worked with me all week trying some different stuff and I think we finally hit on something.”
JC Newell finished third with Trevor Drake fourth and Robbe Ewing fifth
Slader wires field in Modifieds: Kyle Slader of Muskogee
leading all 20 laps in the caution-free Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified feature
Slader led fellow front-row starter Bidinger in the early going
Even as he caught lapped traffic by lap 10
Slader continued to widen his lead and was 2.5 seconds clear of Bidinger with Jesse Stovall in third
Bidinger cut the gap under two seconds with four to go
but that’s when Slader got back at full steam
He went on to beat Stovall by 3.8 seconds with Shadren Turner third
Bidinger fading to fourth and Chase Sigg fifth
“I started on the pole and had a clean race track until we got into lapped traffic,” Slader said
“I moved around a little bit before I got into lapped traffic to know what the car was gonna do in different lanes
This is the third night out on this car and we’ve got a second and two wins
so it’s going pretty good so far.”
Stovall earns Modified make-up feature: Jesse Stovall had to wait a week
but he led all 20 laps to win the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified make-up feature rained out on April 26
The race kicked off the night’s program
rolling to a two-second lead over Dustin Hodges seven laps into the race
Bobby Williams advanced around Hodges on lap 10 for second as the leaders navigated lapped cars
The caution-free 20-lapper saw Stovall hold on to beat a fast-closing Williams by just .447 seconds as the runner-up made a big run on the final two laps
“It’s always good to win in the day time
I’m usually not very good when the sun’s up for some reason,” Stovall said
“I was kind of losing some brakes near the end.”
Hodges finished third with Jason Pursley fourth and Chad Lyle fifth
Clark takes command late in Super Stocks: Gary Clark of Walker worked his way around Tony Anglin with six laps to go and went on to grab the Hickamo Super Stocks main event
Anglin started third and he edged past pole-starter Johnny Fennewald for the lead on lap four
He was able to open up a 1.6-second lead over Clark by the midpoint on lap 10 with Fennewald a close third
Clark quickly cut into the margin and was on Anglin’s bumper two laps later
Anglin fended him off until lap 14 when Clark snuck by on the inside at the start-finish line
but that was a good race,” said Walker
a 30-year racing veteran who last won at Lucas Oil Speedway in 2008
Clark held on from there to take the win by a half-second over Anglin
Tim Brown wound up third with Fennewald fourth and Kenny Carroll fifth
Stock Cars win goes to Beck: Mason Beck of Urbana took the lead from William Garner with four laps to go and captured the O’Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature win
the defending track champ in the division with four feature wins in 2024
rolled to a two-second lead over Beck after just five laps
He appeared on his way to a relatively lopsided win when his 2.4-second lead went away with a lap 10 caution
That gave new life to Beck’s chances and he drew alongside Garner and made the pass on lap 16
Beck drove away from there to beat Garner by .598 seconds with Dawson Fennewald third
He was just too far out front,” Beck

Louis Cardinals have a few starting pitchers they could look to trade this year
notably the duo of Sonny Gray and Erick Fedde
Fedde is much more likely to be dealt for a few reasons
Fedde is on an expiring contract so the Cardinals will be motivated to move him
Fedde's also on a relatively small $7.5 million contract that'll make it much easier to trade him
Looking at potential trade fits around the league
one team sticks out like a sore thumb: the Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles lost Corbin Burnes in the offseason and didn't do much to replace him
They've suffered a plethora of pitching injuries early in the offseason that's resulted in one of the more depleted pitching staffs in the league
The Orioles signed Charlie Morton in the offseason and their short experience with the veteran righty has been as much of a disaster as you could imagine
The righty has made five starts for the Orioles and they're now 0-5 in those games following a brutal loss at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday
Morton's allowed at least four earned runs in each of his five starts
This kind of struggle paired with the lack of depth in the first place could turn the Orioles to a trade for Fedde
Fedde would likely be relatively cheap to acquire
so a deal could quickly come together in the coming weeks
The Cardinals will likely be willing to listen to any offers for the righty and it would be shocking if the Orioles weren't calling St

New Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton has three main philosophies when it comes to offensive football:
Morton is inheriting a Detroit offense that's been good in all three areas
Detroit's 15 giveaways were the sixth fewest in the NFL last year
The Lions had the most 10-plus-yard plays and third most 50-yard plays generated by their offense in 2024
They had the fourth best third-down percentage (47.6 percent)
But it's the second principle — the explosive plays — that Morton eagerly talked about when he sat down with reporters for the first time at the NFL Scouting Combine last month
"I think you have to have explosive plays," he said
I think there's a certain amount of explosive plays you need in a game
I always think seven or eight plays explosively (per game) is really good."
Head coach Dan Campbell begins the offseason looking to replace two coordinators
but despite the turnover on the coaching staff
the team's foundation and culture remain as strong as ever
Morton said the offensive staff would sit down in the weeks after the Combine and
create their own scale for how they log explosive plays internally
Morton said he usually views a pass play of 16-to-17 yards or more and a run play of 10-to-12 yards or more as an explosive play
The exciting part for Morton is the weapons he'll have to build his offense around to accomplish his goal
Detroit led the NFL in 2024 in most touchdowns of 20-plus yards with 18 followed by Philadelphia (17) and Cincinnati (15)
It's a run game in Detroit built uniquely on both toughness and big-play potential which puts a ton of pressure on opposing defenses
Morton said that will continue to be the focus when he and run game coordinator and offensive line coach Hank Fraley sit down and build the run plan for the 2025 season
Morton has been a passing game coordinator in the college and NFL ranks with New Orleans and Denver and served as the offensive coordinator for the Jets in 2017
He's got a terrific mind for offensive football and particularly getting the most out of the passing game
"He's super passionate and he works his tail off," Denver head coach Sean Payton said of Morton
who was his pass game coordinator for the Broncos last season
He's one of those guys that will bring you red zone
Campbell said Morton was instrumental in putting the original version of the offense together in Detroit in 2022 when he was on staff as a senior offensive assistant
"He was one of the pivotal pieces of helping us put this together, this offense version for (Jared) Goff with Goff," Campbell said
there were so many things that during the game plan and weeks of game plan
the ideas that he had in the pass game going into weeks
getting ready for opponents was big for us
Detroit has one of the top explosive passing threats in the league in fourth-year wide receiver Jameson Williams
His five touchdowns of 50-plus yards tied for the NFL lead and his 17.3 yards per reception average was second-best last season
Williams had 17 receptions of 20-plus yards last season and his average alone already fits into Morton's parameters of an explosive passing play for his offense

All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is coming off a 115-catch campaign that saw him rack up 1,263 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns
He had 72 receptions that resulted in a first down — second most in the NFL — with 14 receptions of 20-plus yards
Tight end Sam LaPorta had the fifth highest receiving average (12.1 yards) among tight ends last season
He had 11 receptions of 20-plus yards and caught seven passes that traveled more than 20 yards in the air
He doesn't get enough credit for how strong of a downfield weapon he's become at the position
And don't sleep on Gibbs' ability to be a big-play threat in the passing game
He added six receptions of 20-plus yards in 2024
Goff had the second most completions of 20-plus yards last season (61) and had a passer rating of 103.0 on passes that traveled more than 21 yards in the air
"I think Jared (Goff) is really good at that aspect," Morton said of the vertical aspect of the passing game
"When we sit down and look at this and study other teams like what are the most explosive teams in the league
Detroit's offense led the NFL in points scored
total touchdowns and point differential in 2024
