Carmel Health System’s newest hospital in central Ohio was designed with the intention of making every encounter with a patient an encounter with Christ which began as Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel was founded by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1886 and blossomed into a health system of 8,000+ employees serving more than 1.3 million patients each year The health system is committed to serving in the spirit of the Gospel as a presence of compassionate and transformative healing Keeping Christ at the center of each patient-physician interaction translated to Mount Carmel Dublin Hospital’s architectural design The hospital features a chapel in the center of the building “It sits between the medical office building and the hospital campus designed very intentionally that way,” said William Hubbard it takes a very visible place no matter which door you’re walking into located in the City of Dublin on Emerald Parkway off of Sawmill Road at the I-270 interchange A medical office building is situated on the far left of the hospital’s main entrance An emergency department (ED) is on the right side A large cross is featured on the building’s exterior The cross reflects the hospital’s mission and is a nod to its founders but it’s the cross that stands out,” Hubbard noted of the view of the hospital from the main road “That’s a very intentional landmark that we’re using as a kind of ‘way-finding’ device … that the cross helps us find our way we’re thinking Sisters of the Holy Cross as well – that legacy piece.” Bishop Earl Fernandes offered a benediction The bishop’s blessing was held before Mount Carmel Dublin’s opening to the public Stations of the Cross along the right-side wall leading to an altar and a tabernacle in the front center housing the Eucharistic Lord and consecrated hosts can be distributed to patients “Hospital chapels are places where you want people to feel compassion because you are injured or sick and have to put yourself before the Lord in that moment … for strength “Sometimes even our colleagues and caregivers just need to get away is the inspirational place that we want them to be.” Mount Carmel Dublin can broadcast services from the chapel to patient rooms on channel 95.1 The hospital offers a separate prayer and meditation room next to the chapel The space can be used by individuals of non-Christian faiths such as its Muslim colleagues or physicians Joseph Hendricks blesses the New Mount Carmel Dublin Hospital that opened April 22                  Photo courtesy William Keimig the 35-acre campus offers an array of cardiology is inspiration for everybody who works here – and really just that sense of healing beyond the bodily injury,” Hubbard explained The hospital’s first-floor emergency department offers 14 beds with an ability to overflow into an additional 10 beds “This area has a very robust emergency medical services business – our 9-1-1 providers – and so we anticipate the ED is going to be pretty busy,” said Monica Treinish Mount Carmel’s vice president of operations and chief nursing officer Procedures will take place on the second floor of the hospital which contains operating rooms and neurology and cardiology services Services include nuclear medicine stress testing and neurodiagnostics Primary care is also stationed on the second floor of the building Central Ohio Urology Group and Central Ohio Primary Care will have office space in the hospital’s medical office building as well Rooms for patients admitted to the hospital are located on the third floor four of which make up the intensive care unit (ICU) An additional 30 beds will be offered on the fourth floor of the hospital The campus also features technology in patient rooms for a virtual nurse part of the hospital’s “together team model,” Treinish explained ask medical history questions or answer patient questions The back end of the hospital includes an administrative conference room which can hold more than 60 people and be split into two rooms A smaller conference area is also included in the area Hubbard said the hospital could offer community-facing education He explained that a goal of Mount Carmel Dublin is being a health campus A schedule for Masses offered in Christ Our Hope Chapel has not yet been released A schedule will be added as the hospital begins seeing patients Mount Carmel softball players Chloe Krey (1) and Hayden Traub (5) That message was conveyed by Mount Carmel softball coach Curtis Matthews to the Cubs after a 6-1 loss to St Thomas More in the Division I select semifinals at Frasch Park in Sulphur on Saturday "It was emotional," Matthews said of the postgame huddle "It's unfortunate for the seniors (Brooklyn Butler and Chloe Krey) we accomplished one of the things we wanted The sixth-seeded Cubs (16-14) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Sophomore Shelbi Alphonso — who had three hits and made a diving catch to rob a Cougars player in the outfield — singled and scored on Krey's hit but Matthews went to Hayden Traub out of the bullpen after one-third of an inning the same thing that happened in the quarterfinal at No "I had a very good conversation with the LHSAA about it," Matthews said of Krey's delivery We knew it would probably happen after it spread like wildfire about her elbow being closer to the body Thomas More (25-7) scored four runs in the first inning but had only one hit leave the infield Traub didn't give up another run until the fifth inning Natalie Johnson pitched the final 1⅓ innings allowing no runs and one hit with a strikeout "Hayden came in and did great at pitcher," Matthews said The Cubs put two runners on with no outs in the fifth and sixth innings but the Cougars turned double plays on grounders to third baseman Ava Segura Mount Carmel loaded the bases in the seventh but STM pitcher Margeret Oge recorded the final out Johnson and Marlie Belsome each added one hit for the Cubs who entered the playoffs on a nine-game losing streak ahead of offensive explosions in wins over No We were hanging in there with a very good team News Tips:nolanewstips@theadvocate.com Other performing arts center Mount Carmel High School debuted its performing arts center last week the school’s first formal space for a host of music theater and other arts programs in its 125-year history The 10,000-square-foot center officially opened Thursday night with a preview of the upcoming spring student play “A Few Good Men.” The new center has a black box theater with 200 seats soundproof music practice and podcasting rooms and a music classroom a video editing lab and a studio for ceramics and other arts classes Mount Carmel President Brendan Conroy told the Herald that a number of incoming students to the school have “a high interest in the arts.” and for our ability to attract even more students who want to pursue (artistic) interests in their high school experience The $2.4 million renovation was funded largely by two donors and Mount Carmel alumni Marty (class of 1966) and Julie Hughes and Don (class of 1963) and Peggy Barry giving the center its name: the Barry-Hughes Performing Arts Center Catholic college preparatory school has a little under 600 students this year and gears its teaching to the “adolescent male brain,” which Conroy said means engaging students in movement Current arts course offerings include photography Conroy said students created a documentary on all-male education that was shown at the International Boys’ Schools Coalition meeting last summer in London which recently expanded into a podcast club Noting that students in the broadcasting club are already live-streaming Mount Carmel sports games to anywhere from 7,000 to 10,000 people Conroy said the podcasting club involves students pulling in teachers and other school staff to interview “Those kids know there are stories to tell here at Mount Carmel,” he said The school also offers music classes in percussion “What we want to do is be organic and start with the base that we have which is a lot of kids who want to learn how to play at least guitar and piano right now,” Conroy said noting that the school is considering adding more music classes “Our goal is not to create a big marching band necessarily at this point,” he said “Given where we are in the city of Chicago we think a jazz- type band would be really cool as a sort of capstone.” the school moved the dual cafeteria and student center to another building The old student center had sat mostly unused since save for its occasional use by the theater group and for detention The new construction is a blend of old and modern elements Among features saved are the center’s original flooring The old cafeteria kitchen has been rebranded as the “Mount Carmel Cafe,” and Conroy said he’d like to have students running the cafe during performances He also has plans to turn the hallways of the space into a student art gallery “I’m just a firm believer that the arts are a great way to help a young person to express himself or herself,” Conroy said “They’re a great way for us to understand each other and it’s just an essential part of a liberal arts tradition and an education in (the) Catholic tradition of liberal arts at a high school level.” director of music and performing arts at the school said the school has a long history in the dramatic arts – its first play was held in 1906 But this is the first time that theater will have a physical home at the school putting on its first full-length feature production after four or five years of a pandemic-induced hiatus he’s also working on building the music program “from the ground up.” that the school has offered a formal music curriculum that is sequential which he expects to grow and to lead to new bands and performance ensembles The biggest question Perlberg said he asks himself is “If you ask a kid around here,’ do you want to be able to improvise or play something that you sing with your family or have this workable musicianship and artistry,’ almost every one of them will say ‘yes “So we’re going to cater to that desire while teaching discipline organization and fundamental skills,” he said the chair of the art department for the past 23 years remembers when the center was just a lunch room “Bringing it back to life is just so exciting for the entire arts program performing arts and visual arts,” she said “My goal is to always just keep bringing more showing that we have more than a state championship bbruner@gannett.com After winning only four league games during the regular season Joseph played much better than its sixth seeding suggested in the 54th Baltimore Catholic League Tournament this week The Gaels (22-17) ousted third-seeded Archbishop Spalding in the opening round before eliminating No in a semifinal — giving Gaels coach Pat Clatchey his 850th career win and an opportunity to claim the program’s ninth BCLT title March 4 at Loyola University Maryland’s Reitz Arena..The opponent in that match had recently earned its first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference crown and proceeded to rise into what Cougars coach Tony Martin called “rare air” by beating the Gaels That the top seed used a stifling man-to-man defense to stifle Mount St who broke a seven-game losing streak to the Gaels by sweeping all three meetings between the schools this winter showed what a shut-down ‘D’ can do when it’s clicking “They’re physical and athletic,” Clatchey said Joe’s second-lowest scoring output of the season came against the same team that held them to 37 points in late January the Gaels were held to 33 percent shooting from the floor and a paltry 7 percent (1-for-13) from beyond the 3-point arc while being out-rebounded Mount Carmel wasn’t much better from long range (1-for-8) but converted its other shots at a 45 percent clip it was more than enough for the Cougars to never trail in a satisfying victory that helped Martin go well over the 500-win mark during a 23-year career in Maryland and North Carolina It was also the first time Mount Carmel hoisted a BCLT banner “We said before the game that it would be a race to see who gets to 50 or 55 (points first),” Clatchey said “Nobody gets a day off,” Martin said about his team’s defensive prowess “We just wanted to extend our defense and play reasonably well against a guy like (6-foor-2 junior guard) BJ (Ranson) Ransom (10 points) and 6-foot-3 senior forward Joseph Green (11) were the only Gaels to score in double digits while only one Cougar Mount Carmel received scoring contributions from a slew of other players including 6-foot-9 sophomore Junior Mancha (9) senior guards Mario Tatum (9) and Rodney Scott (6) sophomore guard Samartine Hill (6) and 6-foot-8 junior forward Ralph Rudusans (5) tossed in a soft baseline 3-pointer to open the scoring and closed out the Gaels in the final seconds of the fourth quarter with a thunderous slam The Gaels never got closer than three points of drawing even and that only happened twice — both times in the opening period when Chauncey Word finished a fast break and fellow freshmen guard nailed a baseline jumper there are so many guys we could go to,” Martin said “I felt bad at times to put somebody in the game for a guy who was a lack of support in the man's medical records for the procedure and his multiple medical conditions a 78-year-old woman who the letter says Hatef began treating on Oct died after a surgery that Hatef
