Joy returned to the University of Virginia on Friday evening for its second “Arts on the Hill” appearance since April 2023
The band performed an intimate set at President Jim Ryan’s Carr’s Hill home
just one day before headlining a nearly sold-out show at John Paul Jones Arena
More than 100 students and community members
including fan favorites “Silver Lining” and “Strangers,” while also debuting its newest release
“God Loves Weirdos,” which dropped the same day as the performance
After forming in 2016 and releasing its debut single “Astrovan,” the five-piece band has accumulated more than 1 billion streams and performed at iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden and Red Rocks Amphitheatre
the band was eager to return to Charlottesville
“We have a great fan base here,” keyboardist Jackie Miclau said
audience members had the opportunity to engage directly with the band during a Q&A session
Asked about returning to Charlottesville for another Arts on the Hill performance
Joy hit a much bigger stage at John Paul Jones Arena as the first stop on its “Hope We Have Fun” tour
The last time the band played in Charlottesville
it headlined a show at Ting Pavilion on the Downtown Mall
marked the group’s second time performing in the arena
Joy opened there for The Lumineers in March 2020
just before the pandemic shut down public events
“It’s great to be back in the same building,” Quinn said.
In addition to performing its biggest hits
the band also debuted unreleased songs from its upcoming album

The five musicians comprising the indie-rock band Mt
Joy made their second appearance at John Paul Jones Arena Saturday — but their first one as a headliner
Their new tour “Hope We Have Fun” kicked off in Charlottesville and promoted their new album which will be released May 30
The lively show featured songs from all three of their previous albums
covers and some new and unreleased tracks from the upcoming album
It was split into two sets with a brief intermission.
Joy’s songs can be heard from Coupes to Rugby Road fraternity houses
and there were many University students in attendance Saturday
easy sound — mainly composed of electric and acoustic guitar
the crowd buzzed with energy — clapping along to songs
holding up signs and flashlights and doing plenty of dancing
When keyboardist Jackie Miclau played the opening notes to the fan favorite song “Julia,” the crowd erupted
The band kept the energy going with two more popular tracks
“Jenny Jenkins” and “Orange Blood” which share a meandering
Lead singer and guitarist Matt Quinn led both these songs on his acoustic guitar
which made them feel very folk.
“Orange Blood” the animation featured a surreal
bright orange sun because the song mentions “orange blood
the band played “Highway Queen” silhouetted by an animation of a red car on a highway
The dreamlike colors and fantastical animations are hypnotizing
the band pivoted away from popular hits to play an unreleased song from the new album called “Pink Lady.” The track maintained the band’s iconic sound
but was delightfully more intense and rock than usual
They followed with the recently released second track on “Hope We Have Fun”’ called “Coyote.”
First-year College student Ruby Goff has seen the band three times and appreciates Mt
bright backgrounds and variability in their setlist.
“The hallucinogenic background with bright colors and shifting shapes has been a key part of all their shows
and continues to be one of my favorite features
unreleased songs and even one cover,” Goff said.
The most vulnerable and touching moment of the show came when Quinn introduced a new track – “Lucy.” The song is about the band members playing the famous venue
then finding out about their friend's cancer diagnosis
He expressed a sentiment that is common in all of Mt
Joy’s songs — the importance of appreciating time on Earth.
you might as well dance,” Quinn said.
The band also played two covers. They surprised fans by beginning a cover of “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus without introducing the song first. Also, to little surprise to fans — as the band are self-proclaimed Deadheads — they played “Casey Jones” by The Grateful Dead.
Joy did a good bit of jamming — where the musicians were able to improvise and deviate from the recorded version of the song
The band gave each musician time to flex their musical muscles
during “Rearrange Us,” Miclau broke away from the rest of the band
and gave an impressive performance on the keys
Her fingers flew across the keys at what seemed like inhuman speed
drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos had a similar moment
He seemed to get lost in the music and played an incredibly intricate
the crowd went wild in support for the musicians.
Before launching into their most popular songs
“Strangers” and “Silver Lining,” the band played their soft ballad “Bathroom Light.” The song gave the audience a moment of appreciation and quiet before the band built up the energy for the end of their show.
First year College student Maeve Bradley was mostly unfamiliar with Mt
but connected to this moment especially after being invited by her friend to attend the concert.
“I really enjoyed the vibes of the concert … The song that stuck out to me the most was ‘Bathroom Light,’ I’d never heard it before
but I’ve listened to it like seven times since leaving the concert,” she said.
the crowd began chanting “one more song.” To the audience's delight
Joy ended their set with “Astrovan.” The song encapsulated Mt
lighthearted vibe with lyrics about Jesus driving a magical van and smoking weed
and it was the perfect way to complete their set.
Joy’s songs will certainly continue to be popular among University students

(WHP) — A PFA filed against an Altoona man by his ex-girlfriend is revealing new details about what led up to her being killed and her family members being shot
According to a PFA received by PennLive
19-year-old Gabriella Morgan had filed a PFA against 22-year-old Ricky Shannon on Nov
just days after he initially filed one against her
The court filing stated that on the morning of Nov
Morgan and Shannon had gotten into an argument where Shannon allegedly would not let her leave his home
After Morgan eventually got out of Shannon's house
he is alleged in the PFA to have told Morgan that he hoped she would "get molested and jumped."
Morgan also stated in her PFA that Shannon called her family trash
Morgan traveled to her family in Mount Joy while Shannon apparently called her non-stop
She then told this to Mount Joy Borough Police and stated that she had about 40 missed calls from Shannon within the nearly 3 hour trip from Altoona to Mount Joy
Morgan also said that Shannon had hacked into her email
and she was "scared" that he was "going to find [her] and hurt [her]," after he joked about "cutting body parts" off of her
Pennsylvania State Police during a press conference about the shootings on Friday confirmed that Shannon drove to the Sassafras Terrace apartments where Morgan and her family were staying hours after he was notified of the PFA Morgan filed against him the day before
He then entered the apartment and shot three of Morgan's family members and killed one of them
Shannon and Morgan were later found dead in Shannon's pickup truck on Rt
147 after he shot at Troopers and they fired back

The performance marked the second stop on their ongoing outing
which began on April 19 at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville
the band brought out Buckeye State natives
with a debut of Gillian Welch’s “Look At Miss Ohio.”
guitarist Matt Quinn addresses the audience
“We’re gonna try a song that I’ve loved my whole life
It’s about Ohio.” Mention of the state was met with an eruption of applause and cheers from the excited crowd
before the opening acoustic riffs struck a chord with familiar listeners who recognized the instrumental introduction to the song’s sweet and simple framework.
Caamp members Taylot Meier and Evan Westfall assisted Mt
during which Quinn took the lead before passing lyrics to Meier
adding depth to Welch’s tale of a Midwestern beauty queen and her search for gist.
“Miss Ohio” arrived in 2003 on Welch’s fourth studio album
