(KWCH) - The results for two bond issues in Haysville and Mulvane are in
the bond issue passed with 1,345 votes in favor and 455 against
The school district plans to use the $80 million bond for various improvements
and the construction of a career and technical education addition at Campus High School
This bond will enable the district to move forward without raising the mill levy
the race was closed but failed with 814 yes votes and 885 no votes on a $50,390,000 bond (Proposition 1) that would have paid for school demolitions
and other facility improvements (including financing costs)
which proposed up to $9,280,000 for constructing a new Early Childhood Center and related improvements (also including financing costs)
with 685 votes for the bond and 1,013 against
“We appreciate all the ways our community supports Mulvane students and families,” USD 263 said in a post on Facebook
“The district will continue to move forward with an unwavering commitment to improving our schools and serving our students.”

(KWCH) - Voters in Haysville and Mulvane are getting ready to go to the polls on Tuesday
Both districts are proposing bonds: Haysville for nearly $80 million and Mulvane is asking for about $50 million for improvement projects and another $9 million for a new early childhood center
Haysville plans to use the bond to finance improvements that include roof repairs
HVAC updates and the construction of a career and technical education addition at Campus High School
The Haysville school district said it will be able to undergo the bond without raising the mill levy
citing financial worries with higher property valuations and potentially higher prices coming to stores soon
“I’m kind of undecided right now,” said Haysville parent Leann Fitzgerald
There’s just unanswered questions but I have a fourth grader at Rex (Elementary School) and a 10th grader at Campus.”
“I’m voting ‘no’ because my children are already through school
I’ve paid for it once; I don’t want to pay for it three times,” said Haysville voter Craig Sheldon
Others agree with the district and think improvements are necessary
“The updates should definitely happen because the buildings are very old
it’s providing for the children and that’s what they need,” said Haysville voter Laila Pagan
Fellow Haysville voter Nona Vandamme also spoke in support of the bond even though she doesn’t have any children in the district
“I don’t have kids in school but we still have to take care of the other kids,” she said
“[The bond isn’t] going to raise the mill levy

School officials said the mill levy will remain the same and the bond funding will allow for the completion of key projects:
voters turned down two separate bond questions
One is a $50.3 million bond issue that would provide for safety and security improvements

(KWCH) - January 6 update: A grandmother and her one-month-old grandson were identified by their family as the two people killed in a crash on the Kansas Turnpike last week
A family of nine was traveling in a van with a trailer around midnight Thursday when it overturned
Another vehicle was traveling southbound on the turnpike and crashed into the overturned van
Two of the nine people in the van were killed
58-year-old Ernestina Eumana-Alvarez and 1-month-old Christian Gutierrez
The other seven were hospitalized for serious and minor injuries
The family set up a GoFundMe to help return Ernestina and Christian’s bodies to their native home in Mexico and to cover the medical expenses for Christian’s mother
The three people in the other vehicle involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries
update: The Kansas Highway Patrol clarified information about the child killed in the crash
The KHP lists a child’s age as “0″ when the child is killed -- that doesn’t necessarily mean the child involved was an infant
The KHP said it could not verify the age of the child killed for privacy reasons
It also said it could not confirm how the two people who died in the crash were related
and 11 others were injured in a crash on the Kansas Turnpike early Thursday
The crash happened just after midnight near the Kansas Star Casino exit on southbound I-35 in Sumner County
A van with a trailer overturned in the southbound lanes
A second vehicle attempted to avoid a crash but struck the van
58-year-old Ernestina Eumana of Minneapolis
and a child passenger in the van were killed
An initial report from Mulvane Fire and Rescue said one person was killed
It said a semi hauling cattle was involved in the crash
but the KHP crash long did not list that as one of the vehicles in the crash
Seven other people in the van sustained at least minor injuries
