Election Day ended in disappointment for several suburban school districts in Summit County that were seeking new tax dollars to build new schools or improve their finances
Bond issues to replace aging buildings in the Stow-Munroe Falls and Twinsburg school districts both went down to defeat
according to unofficial election results released early Wednesday morning
voters turned down a levy seeking additional tax support
Voters in the Nordonia Hills City School District also defeated a levy request by a wide margin
voters approved one renewal levy but defeated two others
renewal levies in Cuyahoga Falls and Coventry won by wide margins
Here's more about how suburban school levies fared across Summit County:
Voters in the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District soundly defeated Issue 31
would have raised $238 million over 35 years to construct four new elementary schools and a middle school
Nearly 60% of Summit County voters in the district voted down the levy
Stow-Munroe Falls Superintendent Felisha Gould said the district's bond issue "signals an opportunity for us to revisit our Facilities Master Plan and make the necessary adjustments to gain your confidence and approval."
"I want to extend my gratitude to each of you for your engagement and support throughout the process surrounding our Facilities Master Plan," Gould said
"While the recent vote did not result in the outcome we hoped for
and commitment to our students and schools."
Gould said the district will take the community's feedback and adjust its facilities plan "that genuinely reflects the values and vision of our community."
The levy also would have provided funds to demolish all but one of its elementary schools
as well as its existing intermediate school and middle school
It would have cost property owners $311 annually for each $100,000 of the county's appraised value
a 4.7-mill bond issue for the Twinsburg City School District
Twinsburg Superintendent Kathryn Powers said she was disappointed by the bond issue's failure
"Without the funding to move forward with new construction
our district now faces continued challenges associated with aging facilities and rising maintenance costs," Powers said
"Our immediate focus will remain on essential repairs to maintain safe and functional environments
especially in our elementary school buildings and athletic facilities."
Powers said that while the outcome of the bond will pose challenges for the district
the district's commitment to serving its students is the priority
"The Twinsburg Board of Education will consider the next steps for the Tiger Legacy Project and we will continue to keep our community members informed," Powers said
The bond issue would have raised $107 million over 36 years to build a new pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade building
Bissell and Dodge would have been demolished
and the middle school would have been vacated
Funds from the bond issue also would have paid for the construction of a new stadium behind the high school and the new elementary at the current stadium site
The athletic fields would have moved to the Dodge site
see voters defeat levyVoters in the Mogadore Local School District defeated a 5.9-mill levy by a vote of 1,241 to 1,017
The district had hoped voters would give the levy the green light in its third attempt
would have collected $743,000 a year for five years
It would have cost property owners $207 annually for each $100,000 of the county's appraised value
The Mogadore school district, which is located in both Summit and Portage counties, is currently under a fiscal caution
according to information from the Ohio Department of Education
The district was placed in this status in June 2023
An attempt to pass a 5.9-mill levy in this past primary election failed
as did an effort at a 5.9-mill levy in the November 2023 election and an attempt in May 2023
Voters in the Nordonia Hills City School District defeated a 5-mill continuing levy 10,904 to 8,423
It was the district's second attempt to pass the levy
The district was hoping to add nearly $7.4 million a year to its general fund
Issue 30 would have cost property owners $175 annually for each $100,000 of the county fiscal officer’s appraised value
which is predominantly in Summit County but has a small part of its territory in Portage County
had three five-year renewal levies on the general election ballot:
Tallmadge voters approve permanent improvement levy replacementVoters in the Tallmadge City School District approved Issue 32
which replaces its permanent improvement levy and would restore the levy to its original 1.25 mills
Issue 32 will collect $807,000 per year and cost property owners $40 a year for each $100,000 of the county's appraised value
the renewal of a continuing 7.9-mill levy that generates about $5.8 million annually
was approved by voters in the Cuyahoga Falls City Schools
which includes Cuyahoga Falls and Silver Lake
It will continue to cost property owners $151 for each $100,000 of the county's appraised value
The Coventry Local School District Issue 34 is a renewal that generates nearly $2 million a year for schools
It was narrowly approved by voters 3,276 to 3,039
which will continue to cost property owners $120 for each $100,000 of the county's appraised value

The Ninth Judicial District Court of Appeals has again ruled in favor of the former treasurer of the Stow-Munroe Falls school district
saying that her claim that she was the victim of retaliation deserves to be heard by a jury
Judge Jill Flagg Lanzinger of the appeals court reversed the Summit County Common Pleas Court's judgment in favor of the Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education and against former Treasurer Kristy Stoicoiu and ordered a trial in the lower court
Lanzinger's Dec. 12 ruling states that it should be up to a jury to decide whether Stoicoiu was a whistleblower and whether the board acted in retaliation when it did not renew Stoicoiu's contract
The board was granted summary judgment from Common Pleas Court after arguing Stoicoiu was not a whistleblower and had not shown evidence of retaliatory discharge
In 2019, Stoicoiu, who lives in Kent, sued, stating the nonrenewal of her contract was in retaliation for reporting to the state auditor that there were financial irregularities and improper spending by then-Superintendent Tom Bratten
She claimed that her termination was in breach of contract and that the board violated Ohio's Sunshine Law
was placed on administrative leave in November 2018
He was again granted medical leave in January 2019
A report released by the state auditor's office in April 2019 found Bratten had authorized illegal expenditures and misspent taxpayer dollars on expenditures that lacked proper public purpose
State auditors reviewed school payroll records and found that his administrative assistant received a total of $14,111 for unworked overtime
The auditor's office also reported that Bratten used a total of $2,290 in public funds on personal travel expenses and to pay for gifts that went mostly to board members and administrative staff
The office issued findings for recovery of these sums
The superintendent stepped down from his position on Jan. 1, 2024. However, Bratten is still with the school district as the special projects administrator
where he oversees the district's field house and is assisting with the master facilities plan
The school board at the time countered that its members "had a legitimate
nondiscriminatory basis for not renewing" Stoicoiu's contract
stated that Stoicoiu failed "to detect ongoing financial irregularities during her tenure as treasurer."
Stoicoiu had initially been hired as treasurer under a two-year contract in 2017
She had previously worked as an assistant treasurer with the district
Stoicoiu currently serves as treasurer for the Cuyahoga Falls City Schools
a position she started when her contract with the Stow-Munroe Falls schools ended
In July 2023, the Ninth District Court of Appeals also had overturned the lower court's decision to grant the school board summary judgment
It said the Common Pleas Court erred when it based its decision on an argument the school board made for the first time in replying to Stoicoiu's motion to oppose summary judgment

An idea 10 years in the making has taken shape on the Stow-Munroe Falls High School campus
with a new field house greeting students as they returned to class last week
the district's former superintendent and current special projects administrator
said the new facility creates a spacious environment to accommodate the training and fitness needs of a school system with more than 1,700 high school and middle school athletes
we can comfortably accommodate 75 students," Bratten said
There was no specific room for weight training in the high school
Bratten said — the weight room there was essentially two classrooms that were transformed into one space
which cost more than $100,000 and has been painted in the school colors of maroon and gold
was donated by the Stow-Munroe Falls Athletic Boosters Club
"We are extremely grateful to them," Bratten said
Bratten said the facility was paid for through the district's public improvement funds and donations and no general fund money was used. An initial $5.3 million was budgeted for construction last summer through the improvement fund
but final costs are far from being calculated
The district is seeking public donations and partners to implement the next two phases for the field house
which includes nearly tripling the size of the facility and offering more community services
The weight room is only for student use and will not be open to the public for liability reasons
many of the other amenities in the field house will be open to the public between 8 a.m
There will be a site manager and staff to handle setup and takedown of equipment and other issues that may come up
Bratten said the main point of interest for most people will be the gym area
which includes a walking track and space for three pickleball courts
and the space and equipment for other sports is available by the hour
"You can rent this space out for something like birthday parties," Bratten said
There also is a community room separate from the gym that also can be used for community events
Food and drinks are not allowed in the gym area
but there is a kitchenette area for gatherings in the community room
Laura Forchione said that in the near future
will have cardio equipment such as treadmills plus seating areas that will be open to the public

Thousands of years of history can be seen in the rock ledges and banks of Gorge Metro Park.
The Cuyahoga River Gorge was cut when glacial debris blocked the former route of the waterway (near present-day downtown Akron) and caused the river to find a new course
the gorge began attracting visitors from all over to enjoy amusements parks
the Gorge Dam was constructed to support hydroelectric power generation and to provide cooling water for a nearby coal-fired power plant and in 1930
the Northern Ohio Traction & Light Company
donated 144 acres of this land to Summit Metro Parks.
visitors still enjoy the rocky outcrops and dramatic scenery of the Gorge
The rushing water of the Cuyahoga River flows over a shale riverbed
between ledges made of Sharon conglomerate sandstone
The most prominent rock shelter in Gorge Metro Park is Old Maid’s Kitchen
a name commonly given to such rock shelters by early European settlers to the area
tulip and yellow birch trees are common in woods that cover the valley walls.
Both power plants have been shuttered for decades and Summit Metro Parks is partnering to remove the dam
allowing the Cuyahoga River to flow freely over the Big Falls for which the city of Cuyahoga Falls is named.
