TN – What started as a casual credit check through Credit Karma quickly spiraled into a financial nightmare for one Murfreesboro resident
after she discovered her identity had allegedly been used to fraudulently purchase over $1 million in real estate and vehicles—including a 2023 Nissan Rogue
The case unfolded one weekend ago when Murfreesboro Police were dispatched to an apartment on Bradyville Pike
reported that she had been the victim of identity theft after reviewing her credit report
the unknown suspect or suspects allegedly purchased two homes under her name beginning in May 2023
with both properties totaling over $1 million
the credit activity showed active residency in the homes as far back as last year—without the victim's knowledge or consent
the credit report revealed two vehicle loans: one for a 2020 Nissan Sentra and the other for a 2023 Nissan Rogue
the vehicles were valued at more than $25,000
The victim told police she had no connection to the locations listed on the report
and did not even possess a driver’s license
She also stated she had not shared her personal information with anyone and had no idea who could be behind the scheme
Police informed the victim of the necessary steps to begin clearing her name
starting with filing disputes with the credit bureaus and the lenders involved
Officers also advised her to place a lock or freeze on her Social Security number to prevent further fraudulent activity
and the investigation may span multiple jurisdictions depending on where the fraudulent purchases occurred
Authorities are working to determine who currently occupies the homes and how the suspect managed to gain access to the victim’s personal information
This incident highlights the growing threat of identity theft and the importance of regularly monitoring credit activity

2025) — In a shocking turn of events that has left plastic brick enthusiasts and big box retailers equally stunned
Murfreesboro Police are on the hunt for a Lego-loving larcenist who executed what can only be described as the Great Walmart Block Heist
It all went down at the Walmart on South Rutherford Boulevard
where an enterprising thief decided to skip the checkout line and go straight to free play mode
An alert loss prevention employee noticed the man piling Lego sets into his cart with the kind of enthusiasm typically reserved for a 9-year-old on their birthday — except this adult-sized enthusiast had no intention of paying for his miniature castles and Star Wars ships
the suspect rolled his cart full of overpriced Danish joy-bricks right past the registers and into the parking lot with all the subtlety of a cartoon villain
Store cameras caught the moment he loaded the loot into a getaway car — a Mitsubishi hatchback complete with a cherry blossom decal and (because why not) an Uber sign
A cool $200 — though it could be more
but since the suspect didn’t bother scanning his purchases
we’ll never know exactly what magical worlds he’s constructing at home
Police reports confirm the exact inventory was “unidentifiable,” because as it turns out
described as a man in a white t-shirt and khaki shorts (because originality isn’t his strong suit)
Police are working hard to track him down — ideally before he turns his stolen Millennium Falcon into a Death Star
they’ll be keeping an extra sharp eye on anyone who looks like they might be trying to recreate a scene from The Lego Movie in real life — especially if their cart looks suspiciously more like a toy aisle sweepstakes than a casual Saturday run

Here's the latest news from Middle Tennessee State University:
Middle Tennessee State University Public Health faculty in the Department of Health and Human Performance showed over 300 students “a day in the life” of health professionals during a recent program at Siegel High School — one of four outreach activities planned at various Rutherford County high schools throughout the spring semester
Spearheaded by lecturer Chipper Smith in partnership with associate professor Kahler Stone
the broader goal of the high school presentations aimed at health science students is to raise awareness about the field of public health
“Public Health is a discipline that often operates behind the scenes to prevent illness
and create healthier communities,” Smith said
“This was part of a larger effort we’ve been making to engage local students in health science tracks or HOSA Future Health Professionals chapters to consider public health.”
the presentation focused on explaining the diversity of careers in public health and how students might find their passion working in areas that improve health at a community or population level
“Public health can sometimes be an ‘invisible’ profession because when it's working well
problems are prevented before they arise,” Stone said
“We want students to know that public health careers touch so many areas — from disease prevention
vaccine access and safe drinking water to disaster response
environmental health and health education.”
health science career and technical education teacher at Siegel
said her students were excited to learn about pathways they hadn’t even considered before the MTSU presentation
“While our health science curriculum includes career exploration across various medical- and health-related fields
public health is a topic we rarely delve into,” Sherrell said
“Many were surprised by the diverse career paths within this field
Several students have since expressed a newfound interest in exploring public health as a potential career
highlighting the impact and importance of this exposure.”
Stone and Smith introduced students to the careers of epidemiologists
environmental health specialists and health educators and provided examples of MTSU alumni working in these fields

Murfreesboro City School Board vice chairwoman Amenda Moore called for the elected school officials to vote on the resolution Tuesday against the Tennessee House Bill 793 and Senate Bill 836
after refusing to enroll them with other children for a free education
"Our school board is focused on doing what is best for children," Moore told The Daily News Journal after the meeting
"Nobody can look at these bills in good faith and say that they are good for children
We have to draw the line when kids are being used as leverage in the national immigration policy debate."
Murfreesboro City School Board chairman Butch Campbell said public schools "need to educate all the children."
Tuition for public schools could be expensive

"This bill gives local schools an additional tool they can use to combat the increasing cost of education and eliminate the negative burden of illegal immigration on Tennessee taxpayers."

The Daily News Journal awaits a response from Rudd after leaving a message with him Thursday morning
State Rep. Charlie Baum
opposed the bill recommended by majority vote in the House Education Committee
Baum said Tennessee and the national government already have the right mix of disincentives for undocumented immigrants by withholding TNCare
"I think that's sufficient without us having to penalize the children who may be here without any choice," said Baum
who's also a economics professor at Middle Tennessee State University
Baum mentioned crime being a concern if undocumented adolescents are not in school
"There’s an old saying in the South that idle hands are the devil's tools," Baum said

"Illegal immigration has brought so many costs that are crushing taxpayers and our local governments," said Stevens

School board resolution challenges legality of billsThe Murfreesboro school board's resolution questions if the bills are using "vulnerable children" to challenge a U.S
Doe 1982 that “affirmed that all children have a constitutional right to a public education
absent a compelling governmental interest.”
The resolution also mentions the 14th Amendment of the U.S
Constitution that stipulates that no state shall "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
Board agrees state decision inequitableAll seven elected Murfreesboro City School Board members and their appointed Schools Director Bobby "Trey" N
Duke III signed the resolution that included the following statement:
“Allowing discriminatory practices against students solely based on their immigration status creates inequitable educational systems
potentially promotes division within our communities
places school staff in the untenable position of making enrollment inquiries based on immigration status
and conflicts with the mission of Murfreesboro City Schools to assure the academic and personal success for each child."

In addition to the Murfreesboro City School Board position on the legislation, two advocates, including Judy Whitehill, spoke against the bills in question before the Rutherford County Board of Education during the public comment portion of the meeting Wednesday
"This has to be the most heartless and punitive legislation that has ever been promoted in our state," Whitehill told the Rutherford school officials
Whitehill is a retired teacher for over 30 years, former librarian at Murfreesboro's Northfield Elementary School and a past four-year president of the Tennessee Teachers Association. She also serves as one of two appointed Democrats on the five-member Rutherford County Election Commission
"If this horrible bill does happen to pass
I hope and pray that the Rutherford County School Board will continue to enroll all students and refuse to consider any fee or tuition cost," Whitehill said
"All students have a right to a free and appropriate public-school education."
Whitehill urged the Rutherford school board to draft a resolution to show continued support to educate all students
"How can we teach our children the importance of kindness
acceptance and inclusion when we allow adults in leadership positions to promote hate and divisiveness?" Whitehill said
