“Mommy?” My five-year-old positions his smiling head between my face and laptop screen
getting over his disappointment faster than I get over my guilt
but I have a teacher I need to email about an assignment for my high schooler and sheet music I need to find for my middle schooler’s upcoming audition
I have five ministering interview appointments I need to schedule
playing games is a want while everything else is a need
and before I can explain all my Really Good Reasons™
It was also an interaction that couldn’t have lasted more than 10 seconds
Alma taught that “time only is measured unto men” (Alma 40:8)
but that doesn’t mean we’re good at measuring it accurately
Satan is constantly distorting our perception of time
A quick time audit with my stopwatch revealed the truth
I’m still not perfect at making the most of every moment
but as I continue to challenge the idea that I don’t have time for certain things
I’m fitting more meaningful actions into each day
Ministering to the one becomes easier when I let myself minister one brief interaction at a time
It only takes a couple of seconds of sincere attention to make someone feel loved

Utah — Utah Highway Patrol are now detailing what led up to a standoff that closed Interstate 15 near Nephi for about an hour Wednesday
a man ran from a traffic stop before crashing and refusing to cooperate with officials
Utah Highway Patrol says that on Wednesday at 3:38 p.m.
multiple calls were placed saying that a white Ford van traveling north on I-15 was driving recklessly
A trooper located the van near mile marker 214 and initiated a traffic stop
When officials attempted to take the driver back to their patrol car for sobriety tests they say he instead ran back to his van and drove off
A pursuit was started following the van for about 6 miles before the vehicle ran off the road to the left and struck a cable barrier
the driver barricaded himself inside the van and wouldn't comply with the officials' commands
The Juab County Sheriff's Office and several other agencies assisted in closing the Interstate in both directions as first responders worked to approach the van
Nephi City officers also responded to the scene with an armored vehicle
they saw what appeared to be a rifle in the back of the van
The Utah County Community Emergency Response Team approached the van and deployed gas inside
the driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody
The driver is now being held at the Juab County Jail
no gun was found but officers did find marijuana

I’m really enjoying shooting National Rifle League (NRL) hunter matches
I think the “sporting clays” style precision rifle events tailored for hunting weight rifles is the next big frontier of sport shooting
is probably because I love western mountain elk hunting so much

in Utah we were able to pass a ballot measure to change the state constitution to add a fundamental right to hunt
I think we need that in every state constitution
I loved following that up by passing bills in South Dakota and Wyoming that made it legal to take predators with thermal and night vision
I believe the industry needs to protect the appropriate use of new technologies
we risk people that don’t understand or use those innovations regulating them out of existence
I’ve taken a recent interest in trying to improve my golf game
I shoot a lot more birdies hunting than on the golf course

Los Angeles Rams Week 13 Practice Report with Erin Summers for Wednesday
The state rested its murder conspiracy case against Lori Vallow Daybell on April 16
presenting messages offering a glimpse into her unraveling marriage to Charles Vallow
said she had not decided whether to testify
she told the court she did not plan to present any other evidence in her defense
Closing arguments were expected to begin before the jury at 10:30 a.m
One of the messages presented on the prosecution's final day of introducing evidence was a cryptic note Daybell wrote to her brother
just two days before Cox fatally shot Vallow in the couple's Chandler home
presented in court by prosecutor Treena Kay
was part of a series of digital records pulled from Daybell’s iCloud account
using an email account under the name “Karen Walker” with the address kkwalker75@yahoo.com
a detective with the Chandler Police Department
testified on April 16 that Lori Daybell created the email account in April 2019
which Vallow later discovered and saved to his iCloud account
The account was used to invite Chad Daybell first to Houston
where Lori Daybell — then Lori Vallow — was staying with Charles Vallow
and then to Arizona after Lori Daybell had moved there
Lori Daybell — posing as her husband Charles Vallow — asked Chad Daybell to help write a book about Charles Vallow’s baseball career
Charles Vallow discovered the messages in June 2019 and emailed Chad Daybell and his wife
He also forwarded the emails to his brother-in-law
expressing fears about his wife's increasingly erratic behavior
Lori Daybell and her brother Alex Cox exchanged several cryptic text messages that referenced evil spirits and spiritual transformation
messages showed Lori Daybell texted Alex Cox: “Thank you for standing by me
Nephi is a revered figure in the Book of Mormon who is commanded by God to slay another man
Alex Cox shot Charles Vallow and claimed self-defense
Minutes after Charles Vallow was believed to have been shot
Alex Cox called Lori Daybell twice before calling police
Messages revealed that weeks after the shooting
Lori Daybell sent Chad Daybell — saved in her phone contacts under the nickname “Bubby” — a set of images showing Charles Vallow’s $1 million life insurance policy
Lori Vallow is sending photographs of the life insurance policy — original and the change — to Chad Daybell,” Duncan said
Daybell
has already been convicted in Idaho in the deaths of her children
All three were killed in the months after Charles Vallow's shooting
Lori Daybell has come to be known as the "Doomsday Mom" because of the apocalyptic beliefs she shared with Chad Daybell
'Cheek to cheek' messages between Lori Vallow and Chad DaybellLater on April 16
prosecutors walked jurors through messages between Lori Daybell and her niece
Among the messages was one from Lori Daybell to Melanie Boudreaux: “It’s coming to a head
The two women discussed how Melanie Boudreaux could pretend to be sick in order to remain close to her husband
without raising suspicion — a tactic Duncan testified was used to monitor Brandon Boudreaux’s movements
Lori Daybell replied with support and guidance
calling Melanie’s decision part of her "mission."
Prosecutors have alleged that Lori Daybell was involved in a failed attempt to murder Brandon Boudreaux
Boudreaux was described as “z” — zombie — in messages between Lori Daybell and Alex Cox
Prosecutors showed increasingly intimate messages between Lori Daybell and Chad Daybell after the July 11
Cheek to cheek,” Lori Daybell texted Chad Daybell
the messages between Lori Daybell and Chad Daybell
Lori Daybell told Chad Daybell she wouldn’t be receiving her husband's life insurance payout
to which she previously believed she was entitled
So it was probably Ned before we got rid of him,” Lori Daybell wrote
referring to her deceased husband as “Ned,” a name Lori Daybell had previously used to describe someone she believed was possessed
“They can't tell me to who of course but it's done."
She would still get $4,000 a month from Social Security
Lori Daybell pressed him on a message in which she referenced the Book of Mormon figure Nephi — a passage prosecutors earlier implied was a coded order to kill
“Do you have knowledge that my text message meant that at all?” Lori Daybell asked
Lori Daybell also scrutinized the Chandler Police Department’s decision not to test a baseball bat for trace amounts of blood
pointing out that the bat had been swabbed but never analyzed
Lori Daybell said the bat was used during the altercation that ended with Charles Vallow’s death
Duncan said that investigators did not see any visible blood
She argued the results could have revealed whether her brother Alex Cox had ever touched the bat or whether Charles Vallow had held it during a struggle
Tylee said in her interview that Charles Vallow took the bat from her
The judge sustained an objection to that question
instructing the jury to disregard the reference to Tylee’s police interview

NEPHI — There sure are a lot of cows in Utah
Farms with rich agricultural histories are located throughout the state
there is one part of that history many ranchers hope will never happen again
"Without being able to process animals
it was just backed up all over the state," said Korey Wright
Wright is a rancher in Juab County and remembers during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic
when there were beef shortages at grocery stores
The empty shelves weren't because of a lack of cows but more because of a lack of processing plants with so many facilities forced to shut down
"We couldn't even feed our own community," Wright said
he and his team built the Bar-W Beef facility in Nephi
It will give ranchers another option to process their animals instead of waiting for some of the bigger regional facilities to be available
"We don't know whatever is going to come down the road in the future
but we have the processing now and the ability
and it makes us pretty comfortable and happy," Wright said
The grand opening of the Bar-W Beef facility was last week
but it is already getting plenty of attention from ranchers outside the state
There is a lot of new technology put into it
such as a wastewater treatment facility and new hygienically designed equipment to reduce contamination risk
"It's fun to watch the people come in from back east because they come in and they have never seen anything like this," said Jeremy Lynn
"It is rare to see a brand new processing facility with brand new equipment."
processing facility and USDA inspector on site
They will also buy cows from ranchers throughout the state who want to sell them
Wright said it creates an environment where people can know exactly where their food came from
"I think the most important thing about that is traceability
everyone can trace their beef.' We have our own that we raise and we buy local from farmers all over the state of Utah."
the facility is harvesting about 40-50 cows a day and can supply food for nearly 20,000 families a month
but can do even more if another pandemic or emergency hits
"We want to be able to provide and take care of people," Lynn said
There is even a market at the facility for people to buy food and sign up for subscription deliveries
Products are placed for sale at Bar-W in Nephi
KSL-TV)Wright and his team are also planning a steakhouse and burger shop to open this coming summer on the south end of Nephi
which will provide jobs to locals and food to people passing through the area
"Once you taste the quality of our beef
you'll want more," said Wright with a smile
take care of our own and that's one of the greatest things about it."
– Many of the things necessary to do to win
the New Orleans Saints did in the first half Sunday against the Buccaneers
Many of the things necessary to do to lose
Unfortunately for New Orleans, it did more of the latter than the former in a 27-19 loss at Raymond James Stadium to close out the season
OFFENSE: Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler is going to have to figure out how to be more productive over the course of four quarters
but the nature of the position is that it receives excessive criticism and praise
Rattler and the offense were less than pedestrian in the second half
when he completed five of 14 passes for 59 yards
But in the first half he showed more of the potential that flashed a few times this season
when he completed 21 of 28 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown

DEFENSE: Linebacker Nephi Sewell was named the Ed Block Courage Award winner by his teammates after making his comeback following a torn ACL
He tore the ligament in Week 17 last season against Tampa Bay
and on Sunday he produced his first career sack in his most extensive playing time
two tackles for loss and a quarterback hit and filled in well in the absences of Pete Werner and Willie Gay Jr
SPECIAL TEAMS: Blake Grupe finished out a stellar second season by making all four field-goal attempts
He made 27 of 31 field goals for the season and solidified his standing

How can true followers of Jesus Christ work against forces of division and achieve unity
In an October 2024 Liahona article, President Russell M. Nelson described a pattern for unity found in 4 Nephi in the Book of Mormon
This chapter records how the people lived after the Savior visited them
taught them and established His Church among them
“God has invited all to come unto Him. There is room for everyone,” President Nelson wrote in his article titled “A Pattern for Unity in Jesus Christ.” “We may differ in our cultures
such differences fade in their significance and are superseded by our overriding desire to be one — so that we may be His.”
Below are seven principles of unity President Nelson outlined from 4 Nephi:
The chapter begins: “The disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about. And [people] did come unto them, and did truly repent of their sins” (4 Nephi 1:1)
“We unite around the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” President Nelson said
the Holy Ghost witnesses of the truth to their heart
They can then accept the Savior’s invitation to have faith in Him and repent
and He becomes a unifying force in their life
4 Nephi 1:1 also says those who came to the Church and repented of their sins were baptized and received the Holy Ghost
President Nelson explained: “When we make and keep covenants
we take the Lord’s name upon us as individuals
we travel the covenant path both individually and collectively
Our covenant relationship with God gives us a common cause and a common identity.”
The record continues: “There were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another. And they had all things common among them; therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift” (4 Nephi 1:2-3)
Being unified means not only treating one another as equals
“but we must also truly view one another as equals and feel in our hearts that we are equal — equal before God
The people in 4 Nephi “did walk after the commandments which they had received from their Lord and their God” (4 Nephi 1:12)
Obedience to the teachings of the Lord and His servants is essential to becoming unified
“This includes our commitment to obey the commandment to repent whenever we fall short and to help one another as we strive to do better and be better every day.”
The scriptural account also states that the people “[continued] in fasting and prayer, and in meeting together oft both to pray and to hear the word of the Lord” (4 Nephi 1:12)
President Nelson said weekly worship meetings are an important opportunity to find strength individually and collectively
Real unity is not attainable without love, President Nelson wrote. “There was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people” (4 Nephi 1:15)
It is the principal characteristic of a true follower of Jesus Christ
… As we all seek to have the love of God dwelling in our hearts
the miracle of unity will seem completely natural to us.”
President Nelson noted that the labels that had divided the people for hundreds of years receded as they viewed themselves — and everyone else — according to their relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ
“There were no robbers, nor murderers, neither were there Lamanites, nor any manner of -ites; but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God” (4 Nephi 1:17)
The most important identifiers are those related to divine origin and purpose — a child of God
a child of the covenant and a disciple of Jesus Christ
“As each of us strives to incorporate these essential elements of unity into our lives,” President Nelson concluded, “it may be said of us, as it was of them, ‘Surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God’ (4 Nephi 1:16).”

Peterson said out of the 12 officers employed by the department
at least four were trained in drug interdiction techniques
“Small towns are typically hit pretty hard with the narcotics issues
so we want to take a proactive approach to it,” Peterson told KSL TV

“Without being able to process animals
it was just backed up all over the state,” said Korey Wright
Wright is a rancher in Juab County and remembers during the beginning of Covid when there were beef shortages at grocery stores
The empty shelves weren’t because of a lack of cows
but more because of a lack of processing plants with so many facilities forced to shut down
“We couldn’t even feed our own community,” Wright said
So, he and his team built the Bar-W Beef facility in Nephi
It will give ranchers another option to process their animals
instead of waiting for some of the bigger regional facilities to be available
“We don’t know whatever is going to come down the road in the future
but we have the processing now and the ability and it makes us pretty comfortable and happy,” Wright said
“It’s fun to watch the people come in from back east because they come in and they have never seen something like this,” said Jeremy Lynn
“It is rare to see a brand new processing facility with brand new equipment.”
“I think the most important thing about that is traceability
everyone can trace their beef.’ We have our own that we raise and we buy local from farmers all over the state of Utah.”
“We want to be able to provide and take care of people,” Lynn said
There is even a market at the facility for people to buy food and sign up for subscription deliveries
Wright and his team are also planning a steakhouse and burger shop to open this coming summer on the south end of Nephi
you’ll want more,” said Wright with a smile
take care of our own and that’s one of the greatest things about it.”
The Book of Mormon is “an inspired textbook for life,” said Elder Takashi Wada
It’s a guide to coming to know Jesus Christ and acquire His attributes
“The Book of Mormon has become my compass to help me navigate through the ups and downs of my life,” said Elder Wada in an Oct. 15 BYU devotional at the Marriott Center in Provo
Nephi’s journey through the wilderness in 1 Nephi
can guide students as they navigate life challenges
“As you search diligently,” said Elder Wada
“you will feel the power of the Holy Ghost and recognize the principles Nephi shared with us are time tested and true no matter where or when you live.”
Elder Wada highlighted aspects of Nephi’s journey to illustrate how his trials brought him closer to the Savior in testimony and behavior — and how today’s Saints can similarly become Christike and develop charity
“Following the Savior by being baptized became my application of leaving my own Jerusalem and becoming ‘a new creature’ in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Even though my parents did not like the choice I made at that time
over time they supported my decision to follow the Savior.”
After leaving Jerusalem, Nephi, “having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, ... did cry unto the Lord.” In response, “he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father” (1 Nephi 2:16)
Nephi also sought the Lord by desiring to know the things his father, Lehi, saw in his vision of the tree of life. The Spirit asked Nephi if he believed the vision Lehi had spoken about, and Nephi responded, “I believe all the words of my father” (1 Nephi 11:5)
Yet, when the Spirit asked in verse 16, “Knowest thou the condescension of God?,” Nephi admitted, “I do not know the meaning of all things” (verse 17)
“You can have faith and peace of mind that one day there will be answers to all your questions
Elder Wada shared that “the blessings associated with the trials in our lives are to become closer to the Lord and to develop the characteristics of charity
even the pure love of Christ.” Such was the case with Nephi
who despite difficulties received and acted on character-refining guidance from the Spirit
“He never let go of what he gained spiritually
and he remained true to the faith which his father
When Nephi and his brothers returned to Jerusalem to obtain the plates of brass
“Nephi’s family learned the critical elements of charity: being long-suffering
seeking the will of the Lord rather than their own and bearing all things they received along the way.”
Nephi continued to develop charity as his family traveled through the wilderness. “Their ability to bear their wilderness journey without murmuring is a great example of overcoming pride by being a disciple who is ‘not puffed up,’ ‘thinketh no evil’ and ‘envieth not’ (1 Corinthians 13:4-5).”
Nephi didn’t succumb to opposition, said Elder Wada. “Even when his brothers would not support him and bound him with cords, Nephi continued in his love for them.” Despite swelling and soreness from the cords, he “did not murmur against the Lord because of [his] afflictions” (1 Nephi 18:16)
Elder Wada said that through his endurance, Nephi learned to become kind and not be easily provoked, attributes of charity (see 1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
“he completely trusted that the Lord would lead him to the promised land.” And He did
“When you receive all things with gratefulness as Nephi did,” said Elder Wada
and believe that all things will be made glorious.”

The seized drugs have an estimated street value of nearly $919,000
was booked into the Juab County Jail for investigation of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute
Nephi police said they pulled over Navarro’s vehicle on I-15 at about 6:30 p.m
because of a missing light on his license plate
along with “several indicators consistent with drug trafficking activity.”
Navarro told police he had traveled to California from Chicago on Dec
but a police booking affidavit said the Nephi police officer who arrested him “was previously aware the vehicle Carlos was driving had traveled into California on Jan
leaving less than 24 hours later.” The arrest report does not indicate how the officer was aware of that
police said they “became suspicious he may be involved in some form of criminal activity,” the affidavit states
A narcotic detection K-9 named Grizz smelled an odor coming from the rear passenger door
leading to a discovery of two large black garbage bags behind the front passenger seat of the vehicle
adding that the bags contained a total of 100 baggies containing methamphetamine and weighing more than 101 pounds
Nephi police K-9 Grizz sits in front of over 100 pounds of meth he helped discover in the vehicle traveling through Utah Friday

Police said it was another addition to K-9 Grizz’s efforts in helping the Nephi Police Department seize more than 250 pounds of narcotics since being acquired in January 2023
“This operation is a testament to our unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking in our communities,” Nephi Police Chief Michael Morgan said in a statement
