There were no other million dollar winners this month that I see
but there were a bunch of pretty large winners

CT (WFSB) - A teacher in New Britain has been on paid administrative leave for more than a month after she refused to take down a crucifix that was hanging up on her classroom wall
Marisol Arroyo-Castro was expected to learn if she’ll keep her job on Friday
The cross had been hanging at Arroyo-Castro’s desk for 10 years inside her classroom at the Diloreto Elementary and Middle School in New Britain
The longtime teacher was placed on administrative leave in early December after the school’s administration asked her to remove the crucifix from students’ sight
It claimed it violated federal and state laws which require public schools to remain neutral in religious matters
that’s exactly what they’re not doing though
Because they’re kind of targeting her crucifix and they’re not targeting anyone else’s personal expressions
Russell said forcing Castro to remove the cross violates her First Amendment rights
“If you look back at the coach Kennedy case
what the Supreme Court clarified is that teachers do have the right to have private religious expression even when students can see them
just because they can see that cross and in this case it’s a passive symbol
the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a high school football coach who was fired for praying on the field after games
Russell said Castro uses the cross as a reminder to stay calm throughout the day working with middle school students
The school district claims it’s received complaints from students and staff that her teaching is influenced by her Catholic faith
New Britain’s superintendent said in a statement
“We will not allow any teacher to use their position of authority to impose their personal religious beliefs or infringe on the civil rights of our students.”
Russell said Castro had never heard of the complaints
“I haven’t seen in any of the emails or the correspondence that they’ve had with the client
‘You’re injecting religion into your teaching.’ It’s only been about that cross being at her personal workspace,” Russell said
She said Castro wants to get back to doing what she loves in the district that she’s called home for more than 30 years
“Hopefully they back down and we don’t have to end up in litigation over this,” Russell said
“She just doesn’t want any trouble with the crucifix
She doesn’t understand why it’s such a big deal
Castro remained on paid administrative leave as of early Friday morning
Russell said the New Britain school committee was expected to meet on Friday to discuss whether or not Castro will be terminated as an educator in the district
Russell said it’s not yet clear if she and her client will be invited to be part of that conversation
but if they don’t reinstate Castro they plan to take it to court

The Connecticut Transportation Institute’s executive director
told Channel 3 that hit-and-run fatalities in the state have tripled
“In going back and looking at trends over time
it looks like back in the early 2000s we would maybe have 10 fatalities a year that were due to hit-and-run crashes,” Jackson said
“[The] most recent year we looked at was 2022 and we’re around 30.”
and January are typically the state’s worst months for pedestrian fatalities
“Nationwide we are seeing an increase in the number of hit-and-run fatalities that are actually occurring on the roadways,” Jackson said
we’re seeing an increase in impaired driving and the vast majority of hit-and-run drivers are drivers that are impaired by alcohol or other drugs.”
No arrests were made by police in New Britain as of Tuesday morning
Eyewitness News learned that the crash was captured on surveillance video
“It’s wise to just keep your head up out here and just look around

CT (WFSB) - New Britain’s mayor officially announced on Tuesday she filed paperwork to explore a run for governor
Mayor Erin Stewart held a news conference at 10 a.m
Reports said that the Republican filed paperwork with state election officials last week
Stewart will see if she can raise money and gain the popularity
We are 644 days from the November 2026 election
and not from special interests or millionaires
She said she is participating in a citizens elections program where the maximum contribution is $375 per person
That would mean she needs about 1,000 people to donate
She argued that Connecticut was not in a good spot
“I refuse to stay idle while we watch the decline of our great state
we know that Connecticut is stuck in neutral
taxes and the cost of utilities are simply way too high
Young families like mine struggle every day to make ends meet
We’re losing business and talent to other states
We have no long term vision of where as a state we want to go.”
When asked what she would do differently than Lamont
It’s time for a new generation of leadership.”
She said a full decision would be made sometime in the fall
Four months ago, Stewart announced that she would not seek a seventh term as mayor
she became the youngest mayor in New Britain’s history at 26 years old
She says she has learned a lot since then and is ready to give it another shot
“This is absolutely going to be a people powered effort
I don’t have the means to finance my own campaign
and I’m looking forward to the next several months as I explore my viability
and I hope to make a decision whether to launch a full candidate committee sometime in the fall
but that decision is absolutely predicated on the success of this exploratory effort,” Stewart said
Stewart has earned at least 60% of the vote in the last 3 elections
can that popularity in New Britain translate to the entire state
I refuse to stay idle while we watch the decline of our great state
Governor Lamont has not decided if he will seek a third term
I wouldn’t be doing this if I were,” said Stewart
is hoping Stewart launches a full campaign for governor
Stewart also commented on the first eight days of President Trump’s second term
We knew that everything that’s happened in the last week
we knew that that was going to happen because he’s the type of leader who says he’s going to do something and he doesn’t waffle

What started off as a group of parents in Danbury advocating for educational equity for their children has now grown into a nonprofit organization that opened its sixth community center in New Britain this past weekend
Maria Matos and Lucas Pimentel have been in the advocacy trenches for quite a while
we were just volunteer parents that saw that there was a need for equality of education,” Matos said
Matos said her daughter often had to tutor and assist her high school peers who didn’t speak English because they did not get the assistance they needed in the classroom
She also said many parents didn’t speak English
making it difficult for them to advocate for their children’s needs
“The kids are not receiving the information that they're supposed to receive in school
Latinos for Educational Advocacy and Diversity
Matos is the organization’s vice president and chief programs officer
The non-profit offers a wide variety of programming
services and resources for local Latino communities
LEAD has six community centers across Connecticut
The newest community center opened up in New Britain
A ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday for the new LEAD Community Center in New Britain brought in a full house
“We see the need in New Britain,” Matos said
community engagement coordinator for the New Britain center
said he noticed many Latinos are facing challenges because they are unaware of how to use the tools they have at their disposal
“Many Hispanics could not advance in their jobs because they didn’t know how to use a computer,” Cerdeña said in Spanish
they can learn how to operate a computer perfectly.”
LEAD also offers programs to help Latinos with their retirement funds and their small businesses
The organization also empowers women seeking day care training and helps young people learn how to build a savings account
Cerdeña has noticed over the decades that Latinos often have to go to spaces that aren’t equipped for the kinds of services that LEAD provides
Cerdeña said he had to give his computer literacy courses in a cafe in Waterbury
because he did not have a place where he could offer the course
“It’s important that Latinos have what we deserve
Why do we have to gather in the basement of a church or in a house
Why shouldn’t we have a place like this?” Cerdeña said in Spanish about the new community center on West Main Street
LEAD is working to open another community center in Hartford later this year
Because that's where the laws are passed,” she said
“We want to be close to the legislators office
We want the people to have a place in Hartford where to go and learn
And we want to have the community involved.”
Though there is a lot of excitement around the opening of the New Britain location
Matos said the work to bring about educational equity only continues from here
the hope is to open the new community center in the downtown area of Hartford sometime in August

A man attending his court appearance claimed to be a close friend of Raye’s
We don’t know what their home life was like
We don’t know if he started indulging in alcohol or drugs or anything,” the man said
Police explained that Raye called a friend crying once he fled the scene
Raye told this friend he had just done something very unnormal
he said something crazy had happened and he couldn’t live anymore
Police interviewed another family friend who said Bryana was worried something bad was going to happen by Christopher
