NEW YORK — It was an unusually warm night for November in New York City
In Staten Island, a conservative stronghold of the city, immigration was front and center on voters' minds in Tuesday's election
Donald Trump and his campaign have been promising mass deportations
In a city that has received some 200,000 new migrants in the last two years
"He's gonna close that border again," said Jeanmarie Sigismondi
These points of view were to be expected in this deeply Republican part of town
NPR first stopped by a Bangladeshi part of the neighborhood
where the election results were being broadcast on a giant outdoor screen
Amen Kahn was watching the broadcast and sipping some tea
New York City is a Democratic stronghold, and Jackson Heights, the neighborhood in which we met Khan, is synonymous with its diverse immigrant communities. The mass deportations promised by the Trump campaign would target areas like these
this community was deeply divided on its support of former President Donald Trump
we need to take them out from this country."
Standing at the doorway to his clothing store
Mithu Ahmed invited us into a world of gorgeous fabrics and jewelry
because he said this community is way too divided on the issue
But he did say he lost a lot of business during the pandemic
He said a lot of the Latino immigrants who have been here for decades support Trump
Some recalled feeling afraid during the Obama presidency, who they referred to as "the Deporter-in-Chief." They said they feel Democratic immigration policy has become hard to distinguish from Republican. (In this campaign cycle, Democrats moved further right in their immigration rhetoric.)
Others tell Castiblanco "that they are outraged," he said
Why should these newer migrants get any assistance?"
a woman named Prita Rozario looked sad and tired
As she tells us that she cast her ballot for Kamala Harris
a woman walks by and yells at Rozario in Spanish
"Stupid communist!" before disappearing into the dark streets of this very deeply divided neighborhood

Ballestoro got a flyout and then got bailed out by his defense when shortstop Austin Jentz snared Tommy Formica’s hard liner and doubled off the runner at third to end an early threat
The Centrals gave the senior all the run support he would need in a four-run opening frame
went to third on a throwing error and came around to score on Jentz’ RBI knock to left for a 1-0 lead
The Centrals took advantage of another Warrior fielding miscue as Jayson Carollo doubled in a run and Mike Edwards’ two-run single capped the big start
Ballestero settled down and retired the next seven in a row - the final four via strikeout
I’m just trying to do anything I can to help the team win

I haven’t really been hitting too well this year so I was happy I was able to contribute with the bat too today.”
Thomas Lucchini smoked an RBI single to right center in the second to make things 5-0 and Ballestero drove in Chris Ortado (double) with the sixth run in the fifth
“We preach being aggressive early in the count and we did that today

For New Dorp High School girls’ hoops standout Jordanna Schrecker
it will be where Sacred Heart University is
The four-year varsity starter for coach Frank Guglielmo inked her commitment to attend the Fairfield
school on a full athletic scholarship during a ceremony at New Dorp on Friday afternoon
5-foot-9 shooting guard will likely rewrite the record book at ND before all is said and done
whose senior season begins later this month
is just 304 points shy of setting her school’s all-time scoring mark
She finished her junior campaign with 1,408 career markers and will likely surpass Cathy Emigholz’s school-record of 1,711 at some point this winter
A do-it-all scorer who recorded numerous triple-doubles
and 6.9 assists per game last season while helping lead the Central Cougars to a perfect 14-0 record during the PSAL regular season
After paying a visit to the SHU campus in September
“The thing that stood out most on my visit was the family atmosphere and the environment just felt like home,” said Schrecker
who was also courted with offers from Holy Cross
“The recruiting process was a big learning experience for me and allowed me to get to know different people as well as put myself in different positions that allowed me to grow,” she added

Schrecker will join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
where she’ll play under longtime Pioneers head coach Jessica Mannetti
Sacred Heart posted a 24-10 record last season en route to its second consecutive conference crown
“Coach mostly liked how I could score on all three levels and my confidence that I played with,” acknowledged Schrecker
“I liked the coaching staff because everybody’s personalities went really well together and they just felt like a family.”
“I feel like my skill and my dedication to hard work can allow me to fit into this team and their work ethic,” she added
“I hope to help my team to continue their winning streak and assist them in being the best team we can be.”
Playing time was a non-factor for Schrecker
who says she’ll work to earn as many minutes as she can
Jordanna Schrecker (30) floats to the net during a contest against St
“I’m expecting to play wherever and whenever the coach sees fit,” she said
“All I know is that I will work hard to be the best player I know I can be and see where that takes me.”
The dexterous scoring guard says her attention to detail and maturity as a leader stems from her New Dorp ties
“I learned how to be a leader and how much the little details of the game matter here at New Dorp and with Coach Guglielmo,” she said
“I learned never to let my emotions overrule the way I play the game and to just work as hard as I can to get the team a win.”
Schrecker isn’t sure what she’ll study in college yet
but she’s certain of her goals for the 2024-25 high school hoops season
“I hope to break my school’s scoring record as well as bring home a PSAL championship for my team this year,” she concluded

If you find something compelling about the mere sight of people standing up for what they believe in
New York City offers all manner of inspiration
There are the marches against racial injustice that shut down whole segments of the city
There are the sidewalk encampments featuring a small number of Falun Gong followers
There’s the lonely guy with an anti-abortion sandwich board who roams midtown
you have to respect people who take the time and brave the cold
Some of these protests make headlines but most don’t
Some aren’t even noticed by most New Yorkers
They’re all part of New York’s role as a place where political expression of all types is
But it’s usually hard to get a full sense of the scale of protest in the city
New Yorkers for Parks has tabulated all the protests occurring in public spaces in 2017 and found 640 events involving more than 640,000 people
The organization has organized the data into an interactive map here, and produced this brief analysis of what spaces and topics were the most popular

the Air Service Coast Defense Field at New Dorp was named Miller Field for Captain James E
Miller was the first American aviator killed in action serving for the U.S
Miller Field was home to one of the most prominent American families of the 19th century
Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt began purchasing farmland in New Dorp and owned most of what became Miller Field by 1843
The farmland was inheritted by son William
he moved the 24 room "White House" to the center of the farm
George Washington Vanderbilt's claim to fame is for building Biltmore in North Carolina
The "White House" was a periodic home to him until his death in 1914
Vanderbilt's heirs sold the property to the federal government in 1919
With the end of World War I there was less of a need for an Air Station
Miller Field became a sub-post of Fort Wadsworth
The New York National Guard's 102nd Observation Squadron was the major air unit at the Field from 1923 to 1940
Civilian aircraft used the runway during these years as well
Some significant flights at Miller Field occurred in the 1920s
the Army took commercial photographers to the skies to produce aerial photographs and film of the International Cup yacht races
The newspapers were informed and able to obtain images at the field
This demonstrated both a timely way to produce photographs and a practical use of airplanes to the public
This plane was used for his first trip to Antartica in December 1928
Miller Field was the only Air Coast Defense Station on the east coast of seven originally planned
Crissy Field in San Francisco served the same function on the west coast
it helped defend New York Harbor along with the Coast Artillery Corps
seacoast guns and observation towers were constructed in addition to other military uses
Army aircrafts including helicopters called Miller Field home
Other aviation uses from the 1950s through its closing in 1969 included the Civil Air Patrol
Miller Field housed the 12th Antiaircraft Artillery (AAA) Battalion as well as the 1st Army Aircraft Field Maintanence Unit
The Maintanence Unit was mostly civilian employees that serviced the Nike Missiles installations in the New York area until 1960
Green Beret units used the field as a training camp
This provided both housing and a reserve training area
It was the last grass runway in New York City
it became part of the National Park Service's Gateway NRA

After dropping three straight games to start the season
the Central Cougars won their second straight Friday with a 38-12 PSAL 4A victory over New Utrecht in Brooklyn
The win upped head coach Brian Murphy’s club’s record to 2-3
“I am very proud of my team tonight,” said Murphy
“We got major contributions from a lot of players on offense
We spread the ball around and when we do that
scored on a short touchdown run in the first quarter
Rose connected with Cameron Johnson on a 76-yard TD pass
After New Utrecht answered with a TD drive -- aided by two ND personal fouls -- the winners responded with a 60-yd TD pass from Rose to senior captain Carlos Lopez
Lopez outjumped a New Utrecht defender draped all over him to come away with the ball
New Dorp had a huge goal line stand to go into the intermission leading 22-6
New Utrecht scored to open the second half
but ND responded quickly with a 25-yard TD run by Rose
and the team really believes in him,” praised Murphy
something that had been a problem for Murphy and Co
we finally made some big stops when we needed
and I hope that builds confidence in those guys,” Murphy said
“We flew around tonight led by captain Cary Peterson
Lorenzo Ruiz closed the scoring with a 30-yd TD run
New Dorp will host Canarsie next Friday vs Canarsie at 6 p.m
Joseph by-the Sea's Thomas Digregorio scored two more TDs on Friday vs
coming off a 273-yard performance a week ago
and receiver Anthony Lavezzoli scored twice each as the Vikings rolled to the inter-division CHSFL AA contest Friday night
It was the Vikings’ third straight win and lifted their record to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the CHSFL AA-1 division
Kennedy Catholic dropped to 0-5 in the CHSFL AA-II
“We felt great about the win,” said Sea head coach Tressor Baptiste, whose team is ranked fifth in SILive.com’s rankings. “The team really came together
and it was awesome to see everyone contribute
Players were key in making those crucial tackles.”
Anthony Blachman added a TD for the winners late in the game
The Vikings needed to pass only seven times versus a lesser opponent with Chris Carter connecting on 2 of 5 passes and Peter Gritsai going 2 for 2
“Digregorio and Lavezzoli really brought it with those touchdowns
“Throwing the ball only seven times and still dominating is impressive

The Pirates watched all of a 13-point lead dissipate by the start of the final period
but with the score tied to start the fourth
point guard Danny Garcia made a move to the basket and pulled up for a short jumper
but Garcia hustled to grab the rebound before kicking the ball to a wide-open Shiloh Ezderman in the left corner
it takes a broken play to get things flowing again
“We had to stay tough while battling adversity,’' said Garcia
but we had to stay strong and not get mentally flustered
That play was just a testament to our heart.’'
followed Ezderman’s big bucket with a pair of threes down the stretch and the Pirates wound up holding on for a 47-42 PSAL 3A division victory over the host Centrals on Thursday
The 10-5 Pirates not only won their fourth straight with the victory
but they were able to maintain a share of first place with McKee/Staten Island Tech in Staten Island’s division with identical 7-2 records
Tottenville and MSIT will meet in a first-place showdown on Monday in Huguenot (6 p.m.)
New Dorp's Joshua Carter gets off a floater in the lane over Tottenville's Martin Mesheryakoff during Thursday's PSAL 3A contest
who grabbed a whopping 47 rebounds against the Centrals
Logen Leong (10 points) and Martin Mesheryakoff (eight points) also contributed to Tottenville’s offensive attack
“I think we would have lost this game a week ago
or two weeks ago,’' said Tottenville head coach Kevin Alesi
“But I think guys are starting to come around and understand what we’re trying to do offensively
who we want with the ball and just understanding their role
“At one time we had a tough time accepting roles
Danny would have got that rebound after they blocked it and forced up a shot
where as he (now) trusted Shiloh to make a shot — and he did.’'
The Pirates’ considerable size advantage helped them connect on 10 of 12 free throws in the first half as they built a 25-15 lead behind Garcia (nine points) and Ezderman (seven points
Alesi’s troops then opened the second half with a pair of Mesheryakoff buckets before a Leong free throw gave them a commanding 32-19 advantage with 4:21 left in the period

Onwe’s left baseline jumper helped the hosts tie the game at 33-33 entering the final eight minutes
finally broke the spell a minute into the fourth as Garcia’s rebound and kick out led to Ezderman’s left-corner jumper that helped them regain the lead with 7:06 left
“That’s a shot that I’m consistently (taking) and I have confidence that I’m going to knock it down‚’’ said Ezderman
“They had confidence in me to make it the shot and I was ready to take it.’'
Forty-five seconds after Ezderman’s basket
Garcia hit a huge left-wing trey to increase the lead to five and the score would remain 38-33 for nearly four minutes
Purpero finally broke the spell with a trey
but Joey Gioeni and Garcia sandwiched a Purpero three-point play with a put back and three-pointer
to up Tottenville’s lead to 43-39 with just 1:18 to go
Tottenville head coach Kevin Alesi (purple shirt) gets a point across during a timeout against New Dorp on Thursday
as Fiorenza nailed his third and final trey with 36 ticks left to make it a one-point game (43-42)
sank two free throws apiece in the final 29.5 seconds to solidify the victory
“Hitting those free throws at the end was huge,’' said Alesi
who is one of the best shooters on the Island
inbounding the ball says a lot about the other guys in that type of situation where we know we’re probably going to the free-throw line.’'
“We stayed level-headed (when things got tight),’' said Garcia
The home fans love their team and they were cheering loud and it could be real easy to get flustered and give up on that moment
but we stayed calm and poised down the stretch.’'
NOTES: The Pirates had a number of individuals who contributed to their dominant rebounding game
Arman Ovsepian (five) and Ezderman (five) ..
The Pirates finished 16 for 20 from the line behind Ezderman (7 for 8)
The Centrals only went to the line four times
New Dorp committed just five turnovers in the game
Purpero took the lone charge of the game ..
Onwe and Pizarro finished with nine and eight points

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By James Speciale | youthsports@siadvance.comThe season is only two games old
inexperienced and under-sized New Dorp boys’ basketball team made a statement with a 68-56 thumping of visiting McKee/Staten Island Tech Monday night in New Dorp
The Centrals were sparked by the play of a pair of juniors
Billy Fraser torched the Gulls for a career-high 30 points and Joshua Carter added 20 for ND
The winners toppled CSI/McCown 78-43 in the season opener
workman-like performances from point guard Elijah Pizarro (eight assists
steal) and forward Alex Purpero (game-high 11 boards
Junior guard Omari Onwe chipped in with 11 markers
“We’re a young team and we really don’t even have much chemistry yet
execution; it’s a very hard-working team and tonight we executed,” explained Hopkins
“We have a scrappy unit and we’re coming off a tough loss (non-league to Wagner) and we needed a better performance tonight and we got it.”
Thanks in part to a three-point barrage from Fraser
The smooth shooting guard canned eight triples on the night
including the dagger at the 2:35 mark of the fourth when MSIT got as close as it had since the game’s opening minutes at 59-53
He would also go on to score five of the Centrals’ final six points to seal the win and the team’s 2-0 start (2-1 overall)
“I felt good early out there and once the shots started falling the confidence kept building,” noted Fraser
“We got a lot of contributions from a lot of guys
We’re happy with our start in the league and we just want to keep getting better.”
Fraser’s sizzling night could not be possible without the offensive “execution” that Hopkins stressed
They constantly found the open man with an extra pass against the Gulls zone defense and were able to do the same with dribble penetration when faced with man-to-man sets
making the extra pass and guys got hot from three especially Billy,” said Hopkins
He’s in the gym early and shooting and has a very high basketball IQ; he’s going to really help us this year.”
“Pizarro is our floor general and he sees the floor well
He didn’t even score much and had a big impact on the game,” praised the veteran coach
After MSIT went up 6-3 on a Hingston lay-in
regrouped and closed out the opening period on a 14-3 run and never looked back
Fraser had a pair of treys in the quarter and Onwe had six points in the pivotal run
The hosts kept their foot on the pedal in the second as they handled the aggressive MSIT press and were sparked by the play of Carter (nine points) and three more from downtown from Fraser
MSIT played its best stretch at the onset of the fourth behind a bench spark from Terence Legrand and Guerriero
but it was too little too late as ND won going away
2024 PSAL Football: New Dorp QB JT Rose (15) nearly rewrote the record book on Friday night
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Nick Regina | nregina@siadvance.comEverything’s coming up Rose for New Dorp
The Central Cougars sophomore signal-caller whipped up an eye-popping 6 touchdowns on Friday night in Sea View
delivering a 40-20 triumph over PSAL 4A foe Susan Wagner
Both teams entered with identical 0-3 records in league play
Rose - a dual-threat dynamo - took matters into his own hands and finished one score shy of matching the single-game school-record
He was 6-of-9 passing for 93 yards and two TDs
in addition to handling 19 totes for 145 yards and four scores on the ground
New Dorp found the end zone on all six of its drives on Friday
fueled by a lethal read-option attack that Rose operated to near perfection
The first-year varsity gridder single-handedly accounted for 11 plays of 10+ yards
including rushing scores of 47 and 24 yards
He connected on TD strikes from 20 and 18 yards out -- both of which went the way of senior receiver Cameron Johnson (3 receptions
“It feels like everything is moving and going how it’s supposed to,” said Rose of the performance
though he admitted that he was gunning for 8 TDs
“It was great to see everyone executing,” he continued
We’ll take what we did good this week and bring it into the bye week and then make sure we do the same thing against New Utrecht (in two weeks).”
The New Dorp coaching staff talks with players during a break in Friday's action.Staten Island Advance/Nick Regina
The visitors jumped out to an early 16-0 lead on Friday and eventually opened up a staggering 28-6 advantage late in the first half
Rose ignited the scoring brigade with an 18-yard post strike to Johnson
who fought through a tackle to eclipse the goal line
The quarterback punched in a 1-yard score on ND’s next drive
which was set up by a 23-yard bubble screen to Anthony Fernandez (2 receptions
Rose and running back Cary Peterson each converted two-point totes to close out the first quarter with a 16-0 lead
“(Rose) is a really good player,” said ND head coach Brian Murphy
Each week we add a little bit extra (to the playbook) and we feel like he can handle it
Six touchdowns is a phenomenal effort and it’s a credit to the kind of kid that he is.”
The borough rivals traded scores midway through the second
Wagner running back Anthony Hooker (14 carries
96 yards) netted a two-yard TD after quarterback Toa Spencer (10 carries
Rose promptly answered with a pair of quick scores
He scampered for 24 yards to pay dirt and - after Wagner turned the ball over on downs - he heaved a 20-yard lob to Johnson in the end zone
The senior wideout fought off a pass interference penalty and laid out in the paint to secure the catch
ND led 28-6 and appeared in control with a minute to play
rallied for scores to close out the second quarter and open the third -- swiftly slashing the deficit to 28-20
Hooker and Spencer ran rampant to end the half for the home team
with the former recording runs of 19 and 9 yards before the latter ran in a 13-yard score
The junior QB then opened the half with a 38-yard TD strike to a streaking Devin Louisson (4 receptions
Wagner QB Toa Spencer (0) and running back Anthony Hooker (1) were big parts of the Falcons rushing attack on Friday night.Staten Island Advance/Nick Regina
Rose bluntly reminded the opposition of his thorns
He sliced the defense for a pair of rushing scores to close out the third and begin the fourth quarter -- the latter of which was a 47-yard burst straight through the heart of the Falcons’ defensive line
New Dorps’ offensive line routinely opened up holes in the trenches
and Desmond Humphrey paved the way for Rose and kept him on his feet throughout the night
“The line was playing amazing,” pointed out Rose
“It’s easy to see where I’m supposed to go when everything opens up like that.”
made stops when needed and limited Spencer to 8-of-22 pass attempts for 118 yards
and Jayson Carollo (TFL) were regulars in the backfield

1/832024 PSAL Football: New Dorp Central Cougars vs
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Eddie Mayrose/Special to the AdvanceHeading into Sunday’s contest
Curtis head coach Pete Gambardella was hoping to see the Warriors’ running game continue to improve
To say that facet of the game met his expectations would be an understatement
1-0) ran for six touchdowns in a 65-12 win over New Dorp (0-1) in the PSAL AAAA opener for both teams
“I’m very happy that the O-Line got a body on a body and we moved the ball,” said Gambardella
taking advantage of great field position on each of their first three possessions
A miscommunication on the game’s opening kick pinned the Central Cougars deep in their own territory before a three-and-out gave Curtis a first down on the ND 31
Quadare Gomez wasted no time putting Curtis on the board; sprinting off left tackle before breaking back across the field and racing to the end zone for the game’s initial score
“I was just reading my O-Line,” said Gomez
“They made the blocks and I was able to finish the runs.”
senior defensive back Evan Dukes came off the left edge and sacked ND signal-caller Jon Rose for a safety
The ensuing free kick gave Curtis the ball on the ND 32
setting the stage for another score by Gomez
After a Nick Mouzakis touchdown run gave Curtis a 23-0 lead
registering their only scoring drive of the day
A powerful kickoff return by Anthony Fernandez gave New Dorp some breathing room at their own 35-yard-line and they took advantage with a 65-yard-drive that culminated with a 19-yard scramble and score by Rose to put ND on the board
this time through the air as sophomore QB Anthony Caratelli threw for all 74 yards of the drive
finding Evan Dukes in the end zone from 24 yards out
“I’m very confident in my receivers,” said Caratelli
“I always think they’re going to get open.”
New Dorp’s Carlos Lopez took the ensuing kickoff and raced 78 yards to paydirt for the Central Cougars’ second touchdown
Michael Vanmanen hauled in a 73-yard touchdown pass and William Radice took an interception to the house to give Curtis a 51-12 lead at the half
The Curtis defensive front was dominant throughout
who created havoc in the New Dorp backfield all afternoon.
“When I come off the edge I’m looking to be in the right spot and make a tackle,” said Mitchell
“I have outside contain and then I break down on the ball.”
converting on all nine of his attempts … Saquonne Lawton returned the second half kickoff 78 yards for a score and Ryan Bascoe scored from 26 yards out on the Warriors’ last possession … Gambardella expressed disappointment at the Warriors’ lack of composure during the contest
“You can live with some aggressive penalties
That’s immature nonsense and these guys need to grow up.” ..

Skanska Will Manage the Construction of SPARC Kips Bay
Including Over 600,000 Square Feet of Education Facilities and New Public Open Space
SPARC Kips Bay Expected to Generate Approximately $42 billion in Economic Impact Over the Next 30 Years; Create Over 15,000 Jobs
Including 12,000 Construction and 3,100 Permanent Jobs in the Life Sciences Sector
a joint New York City and New York State funded project with a $1.6 billion public investment
will transform Hunter College’s Brookdale School of Nursing Campus into nearly two million square feet of brand new state-of-the-art academic
and life sciences space.Skanska’s initial involvement in this project will be to provide pre-construction services
Skanska will oversee the day-to-day management of the construction site to ensure the safety of the site and inform the community of updates
The project is expected to generate approximately $42 billion in economic impact over the next 30 years; create over 15,000 jobs
including 12,000 construction and 3,100 permanent jobs in the life sciences sector; and transform an entire city block into nearly two million square feet of academic
“Our administration is laser-focused on setting the foundation for growing industries that will dominate the 21st century and this historic $1 Billion investment in the life sciences
is evidence of just how seriously we take that goal while ensuring we are developing the future of this city with a diverse portfolio of businesses,” said Deputy Mayor of Housing
Economic Development and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer
“As we take one step closer to getting shovels in the ground for this transformational project
I want to thank NYCEDC for their steadfast leadership on this project and I look forward to working with Skanska to see this project delivered.”
“This is yet another milestone for a transformative project that will not only cement New York City as the global leader in the life sciences industry but build the critical career pipelines for New Yorkers,” said NYCEDC President & CEO Andrew Kimball
“SPARC Kips Bay will generate enormous economic impact
and create an industry pipeline for New Yorkers while bringing dramatic improvements to the public realm in Kips Bay and creating a more equitable and inclusive economy for all New Yorkers.”

The guidelines promote reducing embodied carbon
deconstructing buildings in lieu of demolition
By using innovative circular construction methods on this phase of the project
SPARC Kips Bay is anticipated to reduce 26,400 metric tons of carbon emissions – equivalent to removing nearly 5,800 cars from the road
This project will serve as an example in circular construction for other large public and private projects
Skanska’s proposal also supported NYCEDC’s mission to strengthening Minority and/or Women-owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs)
Their application included an innovative approach towards forming partnerships with M/WBE construction managers and contractors:
In the year since Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul unveiled the SPARC Kips Bay Master Plan
the city has already advanced many of its initiatives:
“We are honored to have been selected by the EDC for this first-of-its-kind infrastructure project and will once again look forward to partnering with them on bringing their vision to life,” said Sean Szatkowski

and life sciences,” said “New” New York Executive Director B.J
“The strong partnership between the City and State has fueled the momentum to advance the “New” New York Panel’s recommendations to spark even more economic growth
and future-focused innovation in New York City.”
“The SPARC project will ensure that New York City is a leader in the life sciences sector
and getting a construction manager on board is a major milestone in making that goal a reality,” said Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine
in addition to delivering all the benefits that come with fostering life sciences
making New York’s construction industry more equitable.”
“Manhattan Community Board Six (CB6) applauds NYCEDC on its selection of a construction manager for the SPARC Kips Bay project
CB6 will continue to follow it closely and advocate for our community so that SPARC Kips Bay is a resource the community can be proud of,” said Sandra McKee
NYCEDC launched the SPARC Kips Bay Community Task Force and the Kips Bay Science District Education and Workforce Task Force earlier this year
co-chaired by Council Member Keith Powers and Community Board 6 Chair Sandra McKee
was formed to help guide the community engagement process and the development of community design principles for SPARC Kips Bay’s public realm improvements
which was released ahead of SPARC Kips Bay’s ULURP certification in June
The Kips Bay Science District Education and Workforce Taskforce – a group of over 30 senior life sciences
as well as education and workforce experts—is focused on developing a clear vision for the career pathways
and partnerships needed to ensure Kips Bay provides equitable access for New Yorkers to the City’s health and life sciences ecosystems
These two task forces have provided valuable input for how this project can accomplish its goals of creating vital career pipelines and inclusive benefits
such as new open space for the Kips Bay Community

“Allie Stern came up huge for us,” said Rizzo
I thought Jaylene did a great job orchestrating our offense making some great passes both in transition and in the half-court

10 seeded Warriors picked up the forfeit win to advance to Thursday’s second round
sophomore signal-caller JT Rose flashed plenty of promise en route to piling up four TDs in the first half alone
Of course, the football game was ultimately lost in the shuffle of an incident in the stands that led to the game being canceled at halftime
the Central Cougars had already rallied from deficits of 16-0 and 28-14 to pull within two points on two separate occasions
The soph’s first three varsity passes were incompletions
he made up for it on the ground before gaining a feel for the passing game
Rose’s first run of the day - a QB keeper - went for 42 yards
paving the way for his 13-yard rushing score
calling his own number on an option handoff before skating in another score on the ground to pull within 16-14
But it did little to deter the underclass gunslinger
He rallied to hit on 4 of his next 5 throws
he heaved a downfield jump ball to wide receiver Cameron Johnson (2 rec/103 yards)
He followed with a 17-yard scoring strike to Carlos Lopez
which cut the Fort Hamilton advantage to 28-26
The Tigers would answer with a score late in the half to go up 36-26
but the New Dorp offense was unrelenting throughout
another half of football could have seen Rose even challenge for the school’s single-game scoring record of 7 TDs (Matt Popovic
He ran 16 times for 130 yards and two additional scores
Rose was aided by running backs Cary Peterson (10 carries
Friday’s contest will not be replayed or resumed and New Dorp acknowledged that the game will not count on its overall record
The Central Cougars now pivot to a home bout against Curtis on Sunday morning at 11 a.m

while school administrators and security officers raced to the parking lot in an attempt to control the crowd
a public address announcement notified attendees that they would not be permitted to re-enter if they left the stands
A spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information told the Advance/SILive.com on Saturday afternoon they could not confirm the report of an individual with a knife
and no arrest in that incident was on file
involved two teenage girls getting into a physical altercation
Officers responded to a 911 call in the rear of the school at approximately 8 p.m
A 15-year-old took an 18-year-old victim’s phone
The victim suffered injuries to her head and leg
and was transported to Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell Health in Ocean Breeze for evaluation
Following the police response to that incident
school officials canceled the game and instructed everyone
School athletic director Rich Rucireto and head football coach Brian Murphy were tending to the situation and could not comment at the scene
An NYPD squad car could be seen in the parking lot as patrons exited the adjacent lot
It’s unclear if the non-league bout will count on either team’s record
though an official announcement was not made

Homeowners insurance covers many problems caused by cold temperatures and weather storms
it’ll generally pay to clean up water damage from a frozen pipe or repair your roof if a blizzard knocks a tree onto it
it won’t pay for flooding caused by melting snow unless you have flood insurance
A standard homeowners insurance policy won’t cover damage caused by flooding. If your home is in a high-risk flood zone as designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, your mortgage lender may require you to buy flood insurance
those in low- to moderate-risk areas can also get policies
» MORE: Why you might need flood insurance — even if it's not required
To check your flood risk, start by looking up your address on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's flood maps. However, FEMA’s maps can be outdated and don’t always capture all types of flood risk. Another source to check is First Street

Homeowners insurance rates methodology
NerdWallet calculated median rates for 40-year-old homeowners from various insurance companies in the 25 largest cities in each U.S
Sample homeowners were nonsmokers with good credit living in a single-family
They had a $1,000 deductible and the following coverage limits:
We made minor changes to the sample policy in cases where rates for the above coverage limits or deductibles weren’t available
We changed the credit tier from “good” to “poor,” as reported to the insurer
to see rates for homeowners with poor credit
These are sample rates generated through Quadrant Information Services
NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023
To assess how insurers compare with one another
the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary
measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size
or share of total premiums in the industry
NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer
weighted by market shares of each subsidiary
NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC

Tottenville's Grace Anderson makes a move to the basket in the Pirates 61-56 PSAL 4A quarterfinal win over New Dorp
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By James Speciale | youthsports@siadvance.comWith a first-year varsity head coach and one of the youngest rosters in the Staten Island PSAL 4A division
the 2024-25 season was supposed to be a building block for the Tottenville Pirates
the Huguenot school bolted out to a 5-0 start in the division and continued to mature and get better and better as the season progressed
A solid showing in the Borough President Vito Fossella Cup and a difficult non-league schedule made rookie head coach Jessica Althoff’s young squad battle tested
And despite losing a pair of starters entering the postseason
6 seeded Pirates cruised to an opening-round win over Stuyvesant (81-27) and took out Island-rival Susan Wagner
setting up a quarterfinal matchup with two-time defending Island 4A champ and No
the green and inexperienced Pirates continue to be ahead of schedule as their season will venture onto the semifinal round via a thrilling 61-56 road triumph over the Centrals in New Dorp Tuesday afternoon
“I always joke around with the girls how young we are and that we are always an underdog,” quipped Althoff
2 seed ENY Family Academy Saturday in the semis at 5 p.m
“When we play collectively we are an outstanding team; we don’t need one person to shine
This is a tremendous win for the girls and our school
We deserve it and I’m just so happy for all of them.”
It is a close group that is only going to get better
I can’t be more proud of them,” added Althoff
saw their dreams of a second straight trip to the semifinals slip through the cracks
The Pirates took a 9-7 lead at the 3:52 mark of the opening stanza and built a double-digit lead - as much as 14 points late in the third - but the winners would never relinquish the advantage despite a pair of furious ND runs over the game’s final eight minutes
The Centrals trailed 48-35 entering the fourth
but used an 8-0 spurt to cut the lead to five at 48-43 with just over six minutes to play
who received a team-high 25 points from sophomore sensation Grace Anderson
received a huge boost from defensive specialist Hailee Murphy
The senior canned a short jumper to answer the run and after an Anderson layup off a nice set up from Maria Jose Bello-Osorio the lead went back to nine at 52-43
New Dorp’s all-everything senior Jordanna Schrecker (25 points
six steals) sandwiched an NBA-range triple and a short jumper around a pair of freebies from Araya Lichtman to keep it a two-possession game at 54-48
but once again it was role-player Murphy to the rescue
two-sport star (who was a top defender for the Pirates soccer team in the fall) buried a back-breaking
top-of-the-key three with the shot clock winding down to kick the Pirates' lead back to seven at the 2:58 mark in one of the game’s biggest momentum swings
guarding New Dorp's Jordanna Schrecker

“It’s all thanks to my teammates there,” admitted the Pirate forward
“We moved the ball around great and when it came to me I seen the shot clock going down and I knew I had to take it
Once it left my hands I felt the form was great and I knew it was going down.”
“It’s a great feeling to know I can help the team with defense
rebounds and chip in on offense when I can and a great feeling that we’re moving on to the next round,” Murphy added
would not go down without a fight as Schrecker scored inside
hit a pair of free throws and Kiera Martin’s (four points
seven rebounds) bucket led a 6-0 run that made it a 59-56 game with :46 seconds left
forcing a pair of turnovers and grabbing a defensive rebound and when Anderson calmly canned two fro m the stripe it was celebration time on the visiting sideline
but I knew I just had to fight through in the fourth quarter when they were making a run,” stated Anderson
who filled the stat sheet with six rebounds
while doing an admirable job in defending the high-scoring Schrecker
set up my teammates and hit shots when I was open
It was a great team-effort to get this win and a very special feeling
“Grace has been doing it all year for us; she is only a sophomore in her first varsity season
but she is going to be a special player,” said Althoff
“She plays the game calm and doesn’t get flustered and she always tries to get her teammates involved
The two teams met twice during the regular season with the home team winning
but the Pirates refused to play like an underdog in the face of adversity
“We played them two times early in the season
but we are a completely different team now than we were in both those games,” explained Althoff
“Jordanna is a great player and New Dorp is a great team
but we played as a team and executed the game plan and didn’t panic when they made their run.”
who led the Centrals (19-6 overall) to a semifinal appearance a year ago as well as a 15-2 league record this year was gracious in defeat
they played a great game and their grit and their toughness won out today,” he said
“When the ball doesn’t go in the basket it’s hard to win against a tough team
We had opportunities but we didn’t make the shots
We didn’t look past them trying to get to the semis; they just made more plays and sometimes that happens,” lamented the veteran mentor
NOTES: ENY ironically ousted New Dorp in the same round a year ago ..
ENY upended Curtis 65-41 in the quarters ..
The steady Lichtman chipped in with 11 points
Frosh up-and-comer Gab Ortiz continued her fine play of late with 13 points
while Bello-Osorio contributed four rebounds
New Dorp’s Amaya Ross had a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with three steals and a pair of blocks
Olivia Andruzkow had eight markers and five boards for ND
The second-seed and 2024 runner-up Lady Eagles were too much for the Warriors
who struggled from the foul line and with foul trouble
but the score does not reflect how hard the girls played and the obstacles they overcame during competition,” praised Curtis mentor Talia Sutton
“My staff and I are proud of the growth that occured within each and every player this season
We are beyond pleased by the efforts and commitment the girls put forth
individually and as a team this season,” noted Sutton
six rebounds) and Janiya Thomas (six boards) had solid games for the St
New Dorp's JT Rose (15) has settled into his role as the team's starting quarterback
New Dorp head coach Brian Murphy took the plunge coming into the season when he put sophomore JT Rose at the controls
given that the Central Cougars opened the PSAL 4A season with Curtis
Tottenville and Erasmus -- arguably the league’s three best teams
But the last two weeks have been big steps forward with the Central Cougars posting road wins at Susan Wagner and New Utrecht to improve to 2-3 in the PSAL 4A
the team rallied around him right from that moment on,” Murphy said
“Our first three games were against the three best teams in our league
so JT didn’t really get a chance to take it slowly
he was impressive with his play and competitiveness.”
That competitiveness came to the fore again last week as Rose, this week’s Advance Performer of the Week
was on point in all areas against the Utes last week
He completed 13 of 16 passes for 265 yards and two TDs and rushed 10 times for 89 yards and two more TDs
That performance came on the heels of the win at Susan Wagner in which Rose had a hand in six touchdowns
He threw for two (going 6 for 9 for 93 yards) and ran for four (carrying 19 times for 145 yards)
“The biggest worry was that we were playing such a difficult early portion of our schedule that he might struggle with confidence
“He loves football and playing QB (for us)
so I knew if he hung in he would see success.”
New Dorp enters this week’s action sitting eighth in the PSAL 4A power points rankings with 317 and two of the Central Cougars’ three remaining games are against teams behind them in the standings
including this week’s matchup with Canarsie

Clinging to a 20-18 lead in the fourth quarter
junior Sinkay Thomas ripped off a 56-yard TD run to seal the Seagulls’ PSAL 4A Homecoming win in front of a 1,000 fans
The win also put MSIT back in the playoff conversation as head coach Chris App Jr.’s club improved to 2-3 in the league and 3-3 overall
“He has deceptive speed and once he got to the edge
We said as a staff at halftime that if we got in a pinch the ball had to go to Sinkay
who is in his fourth year at the Seagulls mentor
many who have now been with me since I became a head coach

Senior Erik Rybarczyk’s late second-quarter interception kept the game 12-0 heading into halftime
“Rybarczyk is a four-year program player that was filling in for injury,” said App Jr
“The way he was able to track and catch the ball really helped us retain and sustain the momentum in that first half.”
the MSIT senior running back Gabriel Deluca found the end zone on a speedy and elusive run up the middle on third-and-20 from the 23-yard line to make it 18-6
It was the second of two long third downs that the Gulls converted on that drive

advancing all the way to the division’s playoff finals with a dominant 52-18 semifinal victory over New Dorp on its home mat Saturday in Sunnyside
The Panthers earned the privilege to host one half of the 2A playoff bracket as they were the No
they’ll now square up against James Madison in the finals at a neutral site Tuesday night
Petrides dispatched Cardozo 41-17 in the quarterfinals before matching up against their inner-borough foes in the semis
4-seeded Cougars by taking eight of the 11 contested bouts
but Panthers head coach Dave Olah shared that “completing the last piece of the puzzle would be awesome.”
Olah also expressed pride in his team’s journey to this point as one of the smallest schools in the PSAL
sharing that “we just went through Cardozo who has about 4,000 kids
and now we’re going against Madison who has about 3,500 kids
but we have a strong upperclassmen group who remembers where they were when they were freshmen and they know what it takes.”

Petrides junior Rocky Molinare shut the door with a hard-fought decision
who also secured a win against Cardozo in the quarterfinals
has been a key contributor throughout the playoffs and season as a whole
and his victory over New Dorp improved his personal record to 24-3
“In quarters we went up against a tough team
but I had a really good match against their captain
and faced another tough kid in the semis; I almost had him pinned in the first
I thought I was in control; it was a good win.”

Speaking on his junior’s impressive run as of late, Olah said that Molinare “had a great tournament last weekend; he took second in his class at Donald Douglas, so he’s just coming back around into form and he had a tough matchup in both the quarters and semis
He’s getting locked in and he’s ready to go.”
Another Panther who picked up a win in both the quarters and semis was senior captain Lorenzo Lamattina, whose final season of high school wrestling is going about as well as he could have hoped for, recently joining the prestigious 100-win club
Lamattina shared that he’s been proud of a team that has made doubters into believers
saying that “I think that we’re kind of just defying odds right now; we were in the lower division over the last two years and everyone said we only won titles because of that
But now we moved up to the higher division
this means everything and I know it also means everything to my team and my coaches
I can’t thank anybody else besides them for getting us here.”

the #2 seed in the tournament right behind Petrides
are likewise enjoying a great campaign this season
Olah knows the preparations ahead of the match are going to be key
sharing that “we’re going to get back into the room tomorrow and start looking at some possible matchups
We haven’t seen much of them and they haven’t seen much of us
but we’re going to go out there and wrestle with the enthusiasm that we did today and hope everything pans out.”
Molinare also believes his teammates are up for the challenge
saying that Madison “has a lot of tough guys
they’re going to be bumping a lot of kids up and it should be a really good match; I think we’ll come out with the win,” he confidently added

New Dorp guard Jordanna Schrecker (30) had a fine all-round game in the Centrals 70-55 PSAL 4A triumph over visiting Tottenville
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By James Speciale | youthsports@siadvance.comUpstart Tottenville HS came to New Dorp for a PSAL 4A contest riding high with an unblemished 5-0 record in league play
including a season-opening 66-54 decision over the Centrals
last season’s division champions with a perfect 14-0 mark
played that game without starters Amaya Ross and Sabrina DeSio and have won three straight since getting the pair back in the lineup
Even though it’s still December with a lot of season left
ND head coach Frank Guglielmo challenged his team and wanted to see how they would react in the rematch
Safe to say the veteran coach was satisfied as the Centrals led from start-to-finish in a convincing 70-55 triumph
was a force in all facets of the game as she tallied a team-high 23 points to go along with 14 rebounds
Ross was dominant in the paint as well registering 20 points
DeSio added 11 markers and three helpers as Guglielmo’s balanced attack got solid contributions from Alessia Ferrante and Kiera Martin who added eight and six points
but I feel when we are at full-strength this is what we are and I was happy how we played tonight,” admitted Guglielmo
but I knew the outcome and our performance would be different
Then we kicked it to Sabrina for open threes
The Centrals played with a purpose from the opening-tip
Ross (seven) and DeSio (five) accounted for all the scoring
Their defensive intensity in the second period produced a 40-22 bulge at the break
DeSio canned a pair of threes and Ross bagged another seven in the period
We wanted to give them different looks and know where their shooter was at all times and I felt we did a good job of that,” explained Guglielmo
“We pressed them and even though it wasn’t great they didn’t convert and we went box-and-one on Grace and Jordanna and Sabrina both did a good job.”
Tottenville would make a mini run midway through the final stanza as Araya Lichtman got hot from the field
scoring 11 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth
But it wasn’t nearly enough as the all-around play of upperclassmen Ross and Schrecker was too much for the Pirates to handle
“We want to get back to the PSAL 4A semifinals
but it’s going to take time to get a little more acclimated
We got solid rebounding tonight and we will just look to improve each game,” said Guglielmo
knows the team’s capabilities and is looking forward to finishing her final season strong
I was upset that I couldn’t play in the first game
but I was excited for this one I wanted to go all out and play our best game,” said the soft-spoken Ross
“We had one goal in common tonight and that was to prove that we are the champions
“It’s my senior year and we are a very close team
We have a good team and we want to get better
We want to win another championship and go far in the PSAL playoffs,” she added

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Michael O'Brien | mobrien@siadvance.comDraining a three for her 32nd point of the game against Port Richmond on Monday night
New Dorp senior Jordanna Schrecker made history in the process by becoming just the sixth girls’ player in Staten Island high school basketball history to score 2,000 points
The evening was a resounding success for Schrecker and her teammates as they handedly defeated Port Richmond by a final score of 91-45 on Senior Night
In addition to Schrecker’s game-high 35 points
her senior teammates Amaya Ross and Sabrina Desio finished with 24 and 16 points
senior Aneiyah Alexander played an admirable game
finishing with 24 points to account for over half of her team’s buckets
Schrecker’s fantastic accomplishment surpassed even her own expectations
as she told the Advance that “going into the season I really didn’t think I was going to hit 2,000
so just knowing tonight that I was so close and that I finally got it means a lot
I’ve been here for four years and I worked hard and earned my spot so it just means a lot to know that my name is going to be up in my high school.”
New Dorp senior Jordanna Schrecker scans the floor during a matchup between Port Richmond when the Centrals hosted the Raiders on Feb
Schrecker’s last remark is a reference to the fact that she was surprised by head coach Frank Guglielmo when he announced that her No
30 will now be retired by the school after the season
“She’s a complete player,” Guglielmo said of his standout player
“She plays both ends of the floor very well and her IQ is second to none compared to anybody I’ve ever coached
so that allows her to do so many different things.”
Schrecker’s stellar high school career caught the attention of collegiate programs
and she’ll soon take the next step of her career this fall
whose play as a point guard caught Sacred Heart’s eye
isn’t even playing the position she’s most familiar with
While she began her time as a Central as a shooting guard
a decision that seems to paying dividends for both parties
New Dorp head coach Frank Guglielmo talks with his team during a meeting between the Centrals and the Port Richmond Raiders on Feb
Speaking on how her shifting responsibilities on the floor have prepared her for the college level
“I definitely learned a lot about the mental part of the game
you get passed the ball and you’re told to score
but at point guard you really need to know where everybody’s at
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that sometimes you need to slow things down and see the floor well instead of just ‘score
Schrecker’s playmaking on the night had a selfless nature given the circumstances of the game
as Guglielmo praised his captain for maintaining her team-first mentality
continuing to find teammates in good spots to score despite being on the brink of her 2,000-point milestone
“The fact that she knew what she was in for coming into this and still having the kind of mindset where she’s still hitting the open girl was great
It’s easy as the point guard to know you have a number you want to reach and force it
but she’s never been one to force anything so that makes her special as well,” he said
Two of her aforementioned teammates she dished dimes out to
feeling excited for their teammate while turning in great performances themselves
I’m happy we were there with Jordanna on her special night when she hit 2,000
and I think our other teammates did a really great job too,” Desio said of the team’s togetherness
New Dorp's Jonai Prince and Port Richmond's Abigayle Agandouch go up for a rebound when the Centrals hosted the Raiders on Feb
Commenting on how such an exclamation point of a win on Senior Night is a testament to her squad’s level of play
I feel like as a team we’ve been working towards this
On the defensive end we’ve been working really hard to just keep it at the level we’re used to playing at
and then for me personally it felt great to be able to help my team out in any way that I could.”
