IBERIA PARISH (NEW IBERIA) — One in four young adults currently use vape products
That's according to a local pulmonologist who is working to educate students and parents about the growing risks associated with e-cigarette use
and staff gathered for “Escape the Vape,” an educational campaign organized by the Iberia Parish School System and Iberia Medical Center
“It has become a gateway to smoking—and not only smoking
but also to other dangerous drugs,” said Dr
a pulmonologist with over 30 years of experience and the keynote speaker for Thursday night's event
School officials report that vaping is not just occurring off-campus; it has become commonplace within school grounds
“We have seen an increase in vaping among students in Iberia Parish
and much of it is happening at school,” said Iberia Superintendent Heath Hulin
The CDC indicates that there are more than 6,000 types of vape products
making it increasingly difficult for school staff to identify and prevent their use
“Vape shops have also become more prevalent throughout the parish,” Hulin added
“These shops are appearing all over Iberia Parish
making it easier for kids to access vapes.”
while e-cigarettes were initially marketed as a safer alternative to smoking
“People are now using cannabis in vape devices
some are even using methamphetamine,” he said
“It was really good to hear from someone who understands the long-term complications.”
“I’ve seen people vaping in the bathrooms at school,” he said
“I didn’t even know nicotine poisoning was a possibility

bringing hundreds of jobs to the local community
Larry Richard told KATC during a tour of the facility that this is "the biggest undertaking he's ever been a part of" in Iberia Parish
the company has already hired about 300 people—"majority of whom are from the area."

Richard expects these people to be filling desks as soon as next month
“This is the largest investment in Iberia Parish history,” said Richard
“The Superdome is around 269,000 square feet
and this facility is 2.4 million square feet — it's huge for our community.”
Richard emphasized that the company is hiring for a wide range of entry-level positions
preparing employees for the specific skills needed at the facility
“They train their employees to do what they want them to do,” Richard explained
“It’s not something where you have to learn a particular trade elsewhere and come here
They train you to do exactly what they need.”
The facility is expected to be operating at full capacity by October of this year

The construction of the ‘AGMAC Channel'—part of an ongoing project to deepen Acadiana's access channel to the Gulf of Mexico—is expected to attract more companies to the port
Romero hopes the improvements will lead to additional leases and further growth for the region
Senior Vice President of Cajun Industries and a Lafayette native
emphasized the importance of the Acadiana workforce in the company’s expansion
“When our team was considering where to locate our new Module Fabrication business line
the choice was clear—let’s plant a flag in our own backyard and create job opportunities in the heart of Cajun country,” Lopez said in a statement to KATC
"The real differentiator for Cajun [Industries] in this endeavor will be the Acadiana people—the work ethic

The New Iberia location may also add EV-charging stalls if there is demand
Love’s Travel Stops is adding more services in Louisiana with the opening of a new location in New Iberia, just south of Lafayette off Highway 90, according to a March 20 press release
The company’s 656th travel stop has 63 total truck parking spaces
Its 85 employees will staff Love’s Fresh Kitchen concept
Godfather’s Pizza and Dunkin’ in addition to store retail operations
If there’s demand, Love’s said the new site also has space allocated for EV chargers, noting it will partner with local utilities to install chargers. Notably, the Oklahoma City-based company was awarded $83 million for the construction of chargers in 13 states in 2024, and it’s installing fast chargers in eight states this year
With its latest expansion, Love’s now has 10 travel stops in Louisiana, according to its website. New Iberia is the company’s second location to open in 2025
following the opening of a travel stop in Elliston
“This year, we’re excited to introduce new and updated locations, innovative food and drinks and continued improvement of the services and amenities we offer,” said Shane Wharton, president of Love’s, in a January press release
“With our continued focus on the evolving needs of customers
we’re confident we’ll provide an even better experience across our network in 2025.”
In total, Love’s expects to construct 20 new stores and remodel 50 others as part of its Strategic Remodel Initiative in 2025, adding 1,000 new truck parking spaces to its network in the process. By 2035, the company anticipates that half of its nationwide locations will be newly constructed or remodeled — based on foot traffic, sales and store age — as it invests $1 billion in the effort
“Being strategic with how we update existing locations — and keeping them open during the process — strengthens Love’s commitment to getting customers back on the road quickly,” said Randy Swain
director of construction and remodels for Love’s

be authorized to levy and collect in accordance with Louisiana law a sales and use tax of 0.25% (the "Tax") (an estimated $2,000,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the Tax for an entire year)
with the proceeds of the Tax (after paying the reasonable and necessary costs and expenses of collecting and administering the Tax)
to be used solely to pay salaries and benefits of personnel for the fire department of the City
including an initial raise for such personnel in the first full fiscal year following the effective date of the Tax
The new tax is expected to generate an estimated $2 million annually
“We’re not giving out two million dollars in raises,” Copell clarified
“We’re going to use what we need to use...We try to be real frugal with the taxpayer's dollars.”
The city's department is still operating on funds from a sales tax approved more than 20 years ago
but Copell says those funds are quickly running out
for fire departments to raise base pay for a starting fireman
everybody’s base pay has to increase; that’s where we run into a problem."
The chief told KATC that "no one wants more taxes
including 'us' (meaning fire personnel)" —but said this was the only option
"But this is the only way to start making our pay competitive."
According to firefighters at the department
surrounding fire stations of similar size are paying up to $4 more than New Iberia
we just have to address that salary,” Cropell said
The proposed sales tax aims to provide a sustainable solution to improve pay for firefighters
though it also raises questions about balancing the needs of local firefighters with the financial concerns of residents

— One man is dead after a crash involving a bicycle and a truck Saturday evening
Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a crash around 8 p.m
while a 2019 Ford F-150 was driving in the same direction
Maturin sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene
The driver of the truck was not suspected of being impaired
having no alcohol detected in their breath sample
A standard toxicology sample was collected from Maturin
The investigation into this crash is ongoing
Police said Maturin was not wearing a helmet
and his bike was not equipped with rear lights or reflectors at the time of the crash
Troop I would like to remind everyone that Louisiana law requires bicycles to be equipped with specific lighting and reflectors
Bicycles must have a white light in the front and a red light in the rear
a rear reflector must be visible from 100 feet away
and side-mounted reflectors must be visible from 100 to 600 feet
IBERIA PARISH (NEW IBERIA) — The Port of Iberia is poised to make waves in the maritime industry with the arrival of the largest electric equilibrium crane in the United States
The Belgium-based company E-Crane has chosen the port to assemble the multi-million-dollar E4000 Crane
a machine that is expected to revolutionize bulk handling operations
the E4000 requires half the horsepower of traditional hydraulic cranes
making it a more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly option
The crane will be mounted on a barge and used to load and unload bulk materials—such as grain and fertilizer—from vessels
“This is the largest electric crane in the United States,” said Aaron Bennett
general manager for the Gulf Region of E-Crane USA
“The Port of Iberia offers a central location with easy access to waterways
E-Crane’s decision to lease space at the Port of Iberia marks the first time the company has partnered with a port globally
Bennett emphasized that E-Crane is eager to become part of the Iberia Parish community and not simply be viewed as "another out-of-state business."
“The location and the waterways make this a prime location for our operations
but we also look forward to integrating with the local community,” Bennett said
discussed the project’s significance during a recent presentation for the Lafayette Kiwanis Club
He noted that the port is evolving to meet changing industry demands
we’ve had to repurpose the Port of Iberia to do other things," Romero said
"Because offshore platform construction is not what it was for the last 40 years
So you have to rethink—you have waterfront property—just think of different applications."
The arrival of the E4000 is a key part of the Port of Iberia’s broader efforts to diversify its operations and attract new industries to the region
It is expected to boost both the local job-front and the economy
as the port becomes a hub for more advanced cargo handling technology

IBERIA PARISH (NEW IBERIA) — Two New Iberia City Council positions remain undecided as runoff elections approach
Despite larger races concluding this election cycle
voters in New Iberia will return to the polls to decide the winners for Districts 2 and 5
According to Louisiana State Legislature
a runoff election is held if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the initial election
Iberia Parish Registrar of Voters Kristie Blanchard explained that if a majority vote is not reached
and that determines who’s going to be in the runoff."
"You may have those people who say it's just a runoff election—and that I voted for the presidential or for congress and that my vote won't matter at that point—but you know
it really does matter," Blanchard explained
Rosalind Bobb and Warren White will compete for the council seat
“In this case for Iberia Parish," Blanchard continued
so it's a small population for the city that are eligible for that particular race
I think it's important for the ones who did vote and cast their ballots for their choice
they should go out again on December 7th or early vote
to choose their candidate for the runoff."
