A New Lenox resident lost $12,924 after clicking the link on a phishing email that appeared to come from Xfinity
Officers responded to the complaint at 2:15 p.m
Friday and learned that a resident received a phishing email that appeared to come from Xfinity
The resident clicked on a link in the email but did not enter any personal information, according to a statement from the New Lenox Police Department
The resident later learned that their cellphone number was “ported to a different provider
and several of their financial accounts were hacked,” police said
A total of $12,924 was removed from the accounts
Comcast will never ask customers for password information over the phone, chat or email, according to Xfinity’s website
The company also will never ask for billing or payment information through email
Scammers will send an “unexpected email or text message that looks like it’s from a company you know or trust, like a bank or credit card or utility company,” according to the Federal Trade Commission.
“If you think you clicked on a link or opened an attachment that downloaded harmful software, update your computer’s security software. Then, run a scan and remove anything it identifies as a problem,” according to the FTC.

April 12 in the space formerly known as Ugly Ducklings by Kathleen
(Courtesy of Cedar & Oak Unique Boutique)NEW LENOX
Kathleen Rektorski had just read about the closing and sale of beloved New Lenox occasional shop Ugly Ducklings by Kathleen
then-owner Kathleen Haag had made the difficult decision to sell the space at 398 N
"You know when you feel like you’re supposed to be there—that was it," Rektorski said
was in need of a new home for her business
after its previous office was sold to the Village to accommodate the creation of a roundabout and other construction at Cedar and Haven
It seemed serendipitous—Kathleen Rektorski needed a place
‘I think I’m gonna buy your place,'" Rektorski said
but Rektorski had read about its impending sale on New Lenox Patch
Haag asked what Rektorski planned to do with it
It's her second venture into a retail business
the first being a children's resale shop in her hometown of Berwyn three decades ago
She will manage her transportation business out of the building's second floor
keeping the first floor as a boutique that honors the vision of its previous owner
Rektorski runs the boutique—now called Cedar And Oak Unique Boutique—with the help of Katie Korepanow
Haag once taught art and sold her own creations at vendor markets
The shop on Cedar Road was an extension of her creative endeavors—much of the upcycled furniture in the store was done by her own hand
She focused on bringing in local artists and vendors
spotlighting their work over items you'd find anywhere else
she had hoped someone would find inspiration in what she'd created
"Not necessarily a shop exactly like mine," she said in a November 2024 Patch interview
"but something cute and unique that you can’t find anywhere else
Especially if it was a small business owned by a woman."
She was tickled when the interested party was not only a woman
"My heart is full knowing what I started is being carried on and even elevated to the next level in such a mindful and loving way," Haag said this week
"Kathleen has done a truly amazing job transforming the space from a shop to a beautiful boutique
Many of the vendors and artists who found a home at Ugly Ducklings will return, Rektorski said. Those include Repurpose With Love, Flannel Candle Company, Daybreak Crafts, Ellen's Garden Table, Good Ol' Wood, The Rustic Bird, In My Spare Time, Twirly Girl and SugarPlumFayre. Take a peek inside the shop via their Instagram
Haag's own work will also be sold at the store
"Having her take in many of my makers that are so loved by my previous customers means the world to me," she said
Kathleen has also invited me to drop off my artwork as well as various other pieces including painted furniture."
Rektorski will also bring in new vendors and artists
The Twisted Sister Fused Glass Art & Jewelry
Maddie & Birch and Lincoln-Way Special Education
"We’ll have new and vintage," Rektorski said
Ugly Ducklings sparkled as a New Lenox gem
We don’t have anything like this in New Lenox
Haag's Ugly Ducklings was open on select weekends; Rektorski noted she'll offer expanded hours
Rektorski thanked Korepanow—"If it wasn’t for Katie
I wouldn’t be doing anything," she said —as well as the Village for their part in the chain of events
big thanks to the Village," Rektorski said
She’s very excited that we’re going to keep it the same
Cedar And Oak's opening is set for Saturday
Hours are currently set as Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m

IL — It's coming—regardless of if you know how to drive it
The roundabout planned for Cedar Road and Haven Avenue is nearing reality
with construction set to begin the week of April 21
Thru traffic will not be possible when the project starts
the Village advises; the contractor will erect detour signage for vehicular traffic to use Illinois Highway
Nelson Road and Route 30 for northbound and southbound traffic
The eastbound and westbound detour will include Prairie Road
Local residents will still have access to their property
The roundabout—a much-debated and long-considered solution to the quirky
zigzagging intersection—was estimated early on to cost approximately $2.7 million
Mayor Tim Baldermann this week said the project's cost rose to $4 million
Early discussions of a roundabout at the location date back to at least 2012
the Village in 2023 estimated that approximately 12,300 vehicles per day travel through the intersection; by 2050
that number is projected to increase to 18,000
The intersection experiences heavy traffic
accidents and mobility issues for motorists and pedestrians
The Village has spent several years acquiring necessary parcels of property surrounding the intersection to make the roundabout possible
The project is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2025

was shot at a New Lenox Circle K gas station in May 2020
(Image via Google Maps )JOLIET — Jennifer Baird was called to the stand to testify as the first witness in the murder trial of Kevin Johnson
at the Circle K gas station on Nelson Road in New Lenox
Prosecutors from the Will County State's Attorney's Office approached Jen Baird and showed her a photo
Charlie," the New Lenox resident of 25 years testified
The second witness to testify was the store manager at the Circle K
Patricia Hudgens told the courtroom she was working at the time of the shooting of Baird
Prosecutors showed the courtroom several minutes of video showing Baird staggering into the Circle K gas station
collapsing on the floor before regaining his footing
then eventually collapsing on the floor again
according to current New Lenox Deputy Police Chief Tim Perry
He was a sergeant and the night watchman who responded to the Circle K within minutes of the shooting
before the New Lenox ambulance crews arrived at the scene
he noticed red droplets on the ground inside the Circle K
plus "a hat and other garment of clothing," he testified
Perry was asked by prosecutor Katie Rabenda to describe what he did next
"Walked up to the front door of the business
I saw the victim walking toward the front entrance
He was bleeding and appeared to be injured," Perry testified Tuesday morning as the third prosecution witness for Rabenda and fellow prosecutors Lauren Senko and Christine Vukmir
the only other person inside the Circle K was the store clerk
"who locked herself in an office," Perry testified
Perry immediately turned his attention back to Baird in hopes of obtaining information about the shooting
"I went to the victim and spoke to him," Perry testified
It appeared consistent with a gunshot wound."
A lawyer from the Will County Public Defender's Office tried to convince the judge not to allow Perry to testify about the interview statement he obtained from Baird
overruled the objection and let Perry answer
as if he finished running," Perry testified
Perry also asked Baird if he could describe the suspect's vehicle
When Perry asked the shooting victim about the person who shot him
Baird responded that "it was an African-American male with a facemask."
Upon reviewing the video surveillance cameras from the New Lenox gas station
Perry issued a critical reach bulletin for Illinois police officers
notifying them that the car involved in the shooting was a dark-colored Hyundai Santa Fe
New Lenox police quickly learned that the car involved in the Circle K shooting was stolen less than 10 hours earlier from the garage of someone's home in nearby Lockport
an Assistant Public Defender in Will County
informed the judge that his client is innocent of the murder charges
Strzelecki also notified the judge that later in the trial
his client's older brother Chris Johnson will be called to witness stand to furnish Kevin Johnson with an alibi for the night of the Circle K shooting in New Lenox
Strzelecki argued that the prosecution's case is lacking of any eyewitnesses "that Kevin Johnson committed this crime
He maintained that Chris Johnson's testimony will prove that "Kevin never left the residence" on the night of the New Lenox shooting
Tuesday marked the first day of the bench trial for the young man from Harvey charged in a fatal 2020 shooting at a New Lenox gas station
The trial is being decided by Will County's longest serving judge
The judge — not a jury of 12 Will County citizens — will decide the New Lenox murder defendant's guilt or innocence
Kevin Johnson, now 21, was 16 at the time of the slaying, and he has been in custody on $2.5 million bond since being charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Charles "Charlie" Baird
Baird was shot at a New Lenox Circle K gas station in May 2020 when police said that a car
which had been stolen two days earlier from Lockport
pulled up to a gas pump near where Baird’s car was parked
Police said that while Baird was inside the gas station
a person sitting inside the stolen vehicle tried to open the door of Baird’s car
words were exchanged and Baird was shot in the back
where he died two days later from his injuries
“We all have been waiting five long years for this day," Jennifer Baird told Patch in a statement
Closure for this horrible tragedy that found us

and the completion date is pushed back again
IL — With progress on the New Lenox Pete's Fresh Market visibly stalled
New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann sought an update from the company late last month
With a steel delivery expected this week, the company told Baldermann they'll be able to "push forward nonstop from this point forward." While the company previously touted a spring 2025 opening for the 60,000-sq. ft. store at 2375 E Lincoln Hwy.
Baldermann said now they've pushed it back to spring 2026
The construction standstill was due to reconfiguring of the store necessitated by changes in equipment
Pete's Fresh Market first announced its intention to open in New Lenox in 2017
full-service produce stand on the south side of Chicago," the grocer chain remains a family-owned business with stores featuring fresh produce
Pete's currently has 19 stores in the Chicagoland area with four listed as coming soon
As construction picks back up in New Lenox, Orland Park shoppers are enjoying their new Pete's store, which just opened Jan. 28
That location took approximately five years to debut
but it had moved into an existing building that was formerly an Art Van Furniture store (and a Dominick's before that)
progress continues on a massive Pete's store there at 163rd and Harlem
with an opening tentatively set for spring 2025
That date has also been pushed back from earlier estimates
The company said in 2020 that it would be open by 2022

IL — An official opening date is set for North & Maple Kitchen + Bar New Lenox
owner Jimmy Kollintzas told Patch Thursday
Kollintzas and staff feel ready to show the community what they've got
They'll open in the former Bulldog Ale House on Monday
It's been just more than a year since Jimmy Kollintzas announced he'd be bringing his Tinley-based brand to the shuttered sports bar
and he admittedly has grown increasingly impatient with each month
But he wanted to be sure things were as close to perfect as possible before opening
Some might have already gotten a sneak peek
as Kollintzas has welcomed in a limited number of longtime patrons from the Tinley Park location
Village representatives are set for a visit before opening
Kollintzas has been meticulously checking each dish and drink
and ensuring staff members are thoroughly prepared for what he hopes is a business rush ahead
Feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive
with many noting the drastic differences from its previous existence as Bulldog
noting the space required a massive overhaul and extensive improvements
He knows people have been curious just what's been going on behind the doors of the former sports bar at 2387 East Joliet Highway
The Tinley Park location has been fielding phone calls asking about an opening date for weeks
Work on the location has been quite an undertaking
In its place is a streamlined one with additional seating and TVs on the back wall
The dining room is a mix of high-top tables
It's a clear shift from the sports-bar feel
Kollintzas timed the opening to coincide with the college football national championship game
The Ohio State Buckeyes will take on Notre Dame's Fighting Irish
The menu, available online, features a wide range of dishes from wings, to pork chops to steaks and pastas
Seasonal dishes—such as prime rib for the Christmas and New Year's holidays
Patrick's Day—are planned to rotate through the menu
and the nachos are "huge." The chicken parmigiana and Asiago-stuffed gnocchi shouldn't be missed
wine and a wide selection of whiskey and tequila
Mayor Tim Baldermann said he's eager to welcome Kollintzas and the business
"We are always appreciative of business owners that develop
property in our community," Baldermann said
"The team at North & Maple have invested a tremendous amount of time and money into making this location a top tier restaurant
along with this beautifully remodeled space
will be well received by existing and new customers."

IL — The consolidated election is set for April 1
Two seats are up for grabs on the New Lenox Fire Protection District Board of Trustees
The board of trustees comprises five members
The terms are staggered to allow for continuity as the membership changes
The board serves as the District's policymaking body
and is responsible for providing financial oversight
Running for the seats are incumbents Lori Fischer and Roy "Skip" Minger
Patch provided a questionnaire to candidates
Their answers are now published in candidate profiles
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government
This includes any relatives who work in the government you're running for
Previous or Current Elected or Appointed Office:
The most pressing issues facing our board are _______
and this is what I intend to do about them
The most pressing issue is increasing the retention of the employees and making New Lenox a “destination” department
I would do this by making the district competitive in wages and benefits with comparable departments
The nature of contract services lends itself to a high turnover rate and a degradation of both fire and EMS
What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post
by the New Lenox Fire Union because I recognize the day to day issues professional firefighters deal with
I am also a career firemen that is well versed in contract negotiations
in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)
The shut down of station 2 in 2018 was a disgrace to both the employees and the residents of New Lenox
The loan from Mayor Baldermann to the NLFPD was the only reason station 2 reopened
It is the duty of the board to keep the lights on and the employees paid
The mismanagement of funds by the board put the residents in danger by delaying care
Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform
New Lenox is a growing town that is quickly out growing the current staffing model being implemented by the NLFD
My goal is to make sure that the Fire District is equipped and ready to handle the growth of the town
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job
I have negotiated many labor management contracts with my current employer
I am also on the union executive board where much of my time is spent working on labor management issues
The safety of all residents is my focus when it comes to running for fire trustee
I have no agenda other than to make New Lenox the best fire district in the state
what accomplishment would make your term in office as a success
Making sure the growth of the department matches the growth of the town
government spending and the handling of taxpayer dollars in the office you are seeking
Total transparency is the key to any political office
There is a budget and as a board member it would be my job to stay within the budget
The current needs of the district require us to creat additional income through county
and federal grants to provide needed resources
Is there any reason you would not serve your full term of office
there is no reason I can see that would stop me from fulfilling my term
What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions
I was born and raised in New Lenox and attended Providence Catholic High School
I have been married for almost 20 years and have 3 wonderful kids
I have volunteered in many New Lenox organizations including the NLSGA
I am a proud resident of New Lenox and eagerly anticipate serving as a trustee for the New Lenox Fire District

IL — No one is more excited to see North & Maple in New Lenox open than its owner—and it's almost time
and my phone would not stop," he said laughing
of the day they swapped the Bulldog Ale House signage for the North & Maple one
It's been nearly a year since Jimmy Kollintzas announced he'd be bringing his Tinley-based brand to the shuttered sports bar
so I wasn’t in a hurry to patch things up and pop it open," Kollintzas told Patch Thursday
"I just want to make sure we do things right
This is a long-term partnership I’m looking for with the village of New Lenox."
Kollintzas knows people have been wondering just what's been going on behind the doors of the former sports bar at 2387 East Joliet Highway
"We had to do a lot of upgrades to bring everything into compliance and to code," he said
In rooting North & Maple Kitchen + Bar in its New Lenox home
Kollintzas was determined to replicate the feel and aesthetic of the Tinley Park location
"'Casual class,'" he said he remembers a customer as describing it
Gone is the massive wraparound wooden bar that took up the majority of the main dining area
It's a more modern feel than what preceded it
but he's been careful to keep it welcoming
But people can and should expect a noticeable change in its vibe
"I think we’re a little bit different," he said
With staff and customers from New Lenox frequenting the Tinley Park location
he's been eager to expand the restaurant's reach
He jumped at the opportunity when the space opened up
Though a definitive shift from its previous incarnation
"We’re going to have 12 beers on draft," he noted for those looking to grab a quick beer
"We’re going to have something for everybody
Kollintzas has taken feedback from Tinley Park customers as he shaped the New Lenox location's offerings. Its menu will mirror that of the Tinley location. Opened in 2021, it has been a hit locally, with a menu that features a wide range of dishes from pork chops to steaks and pastas
Patrick's Day—are rotated through the menu
He's eager for people to step inside and see what they've been up to
"I think we’ll be a nice surprise," he said
He's sought to create a cozy atmosphere with a feel that flows from date nights to family dinners to a cold one on the way home
There's more than a dozen TVs throughout for sports fans
"They’re not very 'in your face,'" he said
he tackled each obstacle while running the Tinley location
He has aimed to make it a place people truly latch onto
one they make their own favorite New Lenox spot
"I think It’s going to be a very cool hangout spot," he said
but Kollintzas said they're in final steps and awaiting inspections
and he plans to have a couple of test runs before opening fully
"I just want to make sure the staff feels comfortable
If it were up to him, they'd open by year's end—but final pieces not in his control need to fall into place. As they wait, they train and continue to hire additional for all positions. Anyone interested should email their resume to newlenox@northandmaple.com
or stop by the Tinley location to fill out an application in person
and thinks the reveal will be worth the suspense

During his State of the Community address Sept
Baldermann laid out the possible scenarios
“We have 43 square miles approximately that will be developed
When it’s all said and done we will have a population of 90,000 people
Two of the biggest projects on the horizon are a children’s museum and a massive sports complex

“This facility will be 12,000 square feet.”
“This will be unlike any other small children’s museum that you’ve seen,” he said
“We are contracting with an exhibit maker who makes pieces for Pixar and Disney so what you will see when you come in is fabulous
Kids and adults alike are going to be wowed by what they get.”
The mayor also triggered the "wow" factor when it broke ground for the $70 million Crossroads Sports Complex off Interstate 355 near Silver Cross Hospital
Nine turf fields could be ready by July and a massive indoor complex is planned
Baldermann is banking on bringing national-level tournaments in various sports to town
“This will attract teams from all over the country,” Baldermann said

who is charged with first-degree murder in the 2020 shooting death of Charlie Baird of New Lenox
(Courtesy Will County Jail)WILL COUNTY — The trial of a Harvey man charged in a fatal 2020 shooting at a New Lenox gas station is finally set to begin March 10
one step closer to closure for the victim's family
Kevin Johnson, now 21, was 16 at the time of the slaying, and has been in custody on $2.5 million bond since being charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Charles Baird
an occupant from the stolen vehicle tried to open the door of Baird’s car
Police have said previously that Baird was able to describe the suspect before he died
Baird's mother has contended there was another person in the car who pointed to Johnson as the shooter
The start of the trial follows years of delays and setbacks in the case, including Johnson's attorney's claims of an alibi witness and attempts to locate that person
Johnson has remained in custody after failed attempts for reduced bond and electronic monitoring
he also attempted to secure pre-trial release by utilizing a condition of the SAFE-T Act
a motion Will County Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak denied
In October 2024, Bertani-Tomczak also limited the number of people Johnson could contact while in custody, citing reports that he had both directly and through other parties threatened to harm witnesses for the trial, Shaw Media reports
He was ordered not to contact anyone but two family members
The trial is set to begin March 10 under Judge Bertani-Tomczak

The rhythms and sounds of a restaurant—forks scraping plates
Owner of shuttered Bourbons Smokehouse in New Lenox
Regiro was forced to close his dream come to fruition in November 2024
just two years after he and wife Tonya had opened the brick-and-mortar location at 280 E
and I have never been at a lower point in my life
Regiro went out fighting, issuing a public plea for anyone interested in backing the business or investing to come forward
In December, after reading online coverage of Regiro's plight and passion, the owners of pre-established brand Firewater BBQ and Brew approached Regiro
but I just couldn’t save my business," Regiro told Patch
Firewater owners Matthew Weil and Roger Dunn were interested in the Bourbons space
They had their own—and they wanted Regiro to help them bring it to New Lenox
"They said they don’t want to do it unless I’m involved," Regiro said
Firewater has since expanded with locations in Geneva
Firewater BBQ & Brew is known for its award-winning
Southern-style barbecue with a focus on natural
paired with a selection of local and regional craft beers
traditional smoked barbecue process appealed to Regiro
"Everything they do is the same kind of passion
I couldn’t be part of a company if it wasn’t true
They want to put out the highest quality product
renegotiating the lease and taking next steps with the Village
Regiro is busy prepping the space and hiring crew members
it took Regiro some time to embrace the opportunity with Firewater
"It took me until January to start trying to come out of it a little bit," he said
"and start seeing that Firewater’s giving me a second chance here
"I finally have something to look forward to again."
"I think it was by the grace of God," he said
"I am eternally grateful to them for believing in me
That’s why I decided I want to be part of it with them—they poured their belief and support
I couldn’t see why I wouldn’t give back and be a part of them
Regiro is hopeful the community will welcome him back at the helm of Firewater
and show the owners the same support they did Bourbons
they’re a great family behind it," he said
"They need the community to come out and support them
making their business viable in its other locations
built simplified and streamlined menus—and shown Regiro where maybe he went wrong
but it was an extensive amount of costs and labors
"It’s very humbling to be a part of the organization because they have a lot of resources available
Firewater's owners are utilizing all of Bourbons equipment
and have brought their own touches to the interior
"I think the community’s going to be really excited with some of the design characteristics they brought to the space," Regiro said
Firewater BBQ and Brew is described as fast-casual, he said. They’ll call your name to grab your order, and then you help yourself to condiments, to-go boxes, drinks and such. You can check out their menu online.
"Country and blues music that’s a lot of fun
I think the community’s really going to enjoy it very much
I’m proud to be part of the Firewater family."
Regiro is grateful for the Firewater owners giving him a chance to reignite this passion
"Firewater literally picked me out of the ashes of Bourbons," he said
Gave me the confidence to be part of a family that does it right
The way I’m looking at it—we are rising like a phoenix out of the ashes of Bourbons
whose own dream was fueled so deeply by the support of his family and staff
"I'm grateful for my family—my wife and kids
my entire family—that was involved," he said
"We want people to understand it’s a soft opening," Regiro said
"We're going to do the best we can to have everything available
but we will be working out kinks and stuff in the beginning."
hearing the sounds of laughter—I miss that
I miss the community enjoying a meal together
"I’m seeing there’s a light at the end of the tunnel again
and I’m looking so forward to being able to hear customers laugh and enjoy the environment again
Firewater BBQ and Brew will open at 280 E. Lincoln Highway. They are currently hiring for all positions. To apply, visit their website, or Facebook page

He is accused of killing a New Lenox teenager at the Circle K gas station pumps
(John Ferak/Joliet Patch Editor )JOLIET — At last week's bench trial for New Lenox murder defendant Kevin Johnson
one of his three taxpayer-funded Will County Public Defenders
announced during opening statements that Christopher Johnson would take the witness stand to provide his younger brother with an alibi for the time of a May 11
the defense team of Strzelecki and fellow public defenders Jaylen Windham and Samantha Kerins had their opportunity to present their side
to call their witnesses after the Will County State's Attorney's Office rested in the Circle K gas station shooting of Charlie Baird
The young man from New Lenox patronized his local gas station
Kevin Johnson emerged from the backseat of a car previously stolen in Lockport
according to last week's testimony from Marquez Whitfield
an Illinois Department of Corrections prisoner
who is serving time at the prison in Danville for an unrelated gun crime in Cook County
testified last week that he was solely responsible for trying to break into Baird's vehicle
only to find the back passenger door locked
Whitfield testified that upon returning to the stolen SUV, Kevin Johnson grabbed Whitfield's gun from inside the car and confronted Baird as the victim returned from inside the Circle K gas station. Whitfield saw Kevin Johnson shoot Baird once in the shoulder area
the public defender's office chose not to present much of a case at all
The three public defenders did not call Christopher Johnson to testify in Courtroom 405 after all
the public defenders chose not to call their client to testify in his own defense
The defense presented one witness as part of their case
who previously testified last week for the prosecution
Tilton was put on the witness stand on Monday afternoon to answer various questions about the interview statements made by witnesses during the 2020 murder investigation
the lawyers will return to Will County Courtroom 405 to make their closing arguments and Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak will decide Kevin Johnson's guilt or innocence

ExpandAn overpass will replace this at-grade railroad crossing on Gougar Road at the Wisconsin Central/Canadian National tracks in New Lenox on Jan
Will County will build a railroad overpass in New Lenox with the help of $27.1 million in federal money.
The county has announced that it received the funds to build an overpass on Gougar Road at the Wisconsin Central/Canadian National tracks.
The funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration is “the largest transportation grant in Will County history,” according to a news release from the county.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
“This historic investment from the federal government will greatly improve access and safety for residents in a fast-growing area of Will County,” Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said in the release. “By eliminating delays from blocked rail crossings, we are increasing mobility for residents and emergency responders in a heavily trafficked corridor.”
Will County Executive Director Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (Gary Middendorf)
The entire cost of the project $51.8 million.
The Illinois Commerce Commission is funding $18 million, and Will County is spending $6.7 million.
Gougar Road will be raised over the tracks at the location, replacing an existing at-grade crossing. The overpass project also will create an pedestrian pathway connecting with an existing path network in the community.
Costs related to the project include the relocation of a ComEd transmission towers near the crossing.
The release described Gougar Road as “a critical north-south corridor,” noting it connects neighborhoods with Lincoln-Way West High School and provides a major route for emergency responders to Silver Cross Hospital.
New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann (Gary Middendorf/Gary Middendorf)
“This separation will allow for safer north/south travel for many in Will County, and could be the difference of life and death when it comes to ambulances trying to get to Silver Cross Hospital from the south side of the tracks,” Mayor Tim Baldermann said in the release.
Both Will County and the Illinois Commerce Commission will contribute a 20 percent local match for the federal funds. The ICC is contributing $18 million.
The federal funding is part of a $1.1 billion Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program supporting 123 projects around the country.

About 2:25 p.m. Thursday, officers were sent to Pine Street and Central Road in response to a report of a shooting, according to a statement from the New Lenox Police Department.
Ryan Mettille, 21, of New Lenox, admitted that he fired a gun after he was involved in a “physical altercation” with another man, police said.
Mettille said the man confronted him and “engaged in a physical fight with him,” police said.
Mettille entered his residence, retrieved a handgun and “fired shots into the air as a warning” to make the man leave, police said.
Officers recovered the firearm and found shell casings near the doorway to Mettille’s residence, police said.
Officers also recovered video that captured the gunshots with muzzle flashes in the area where the shell casings were found.
Mettille was taken into custody on a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm. He was processed and released from police custody.

IL — Will County will receive $27 million in federal funds to build a rail crossing overpass at Gougar Road in New Lenox
marking the largest transportation grant in Will County history
The United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration will give Will County $27 million to construct a rail crossing overpass at the Gougar Road at Wisconsin Central/Canadian National Railroad Grade Separation
The funding will "accelerate construction on a project aimed at increasing safety and reducing traffic at a key rail crossing," officials said
"This historic investment from the federal government will greatly improve access and safety for residents in a fast-growing area of Will County," said Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant
"By eliminating delays from blocked rail crossings
we are increasing mobility for residents and emergency responders in a heavily trafficked corridor
I appreciate the efforts of the USDOT and our federal delegation for supporting this key project."
The project will replace the existing at-grade rail crossing with an overpass
while also creating a shared-use pedestrian pathway that connects with the existing community path network
The crossing on Gougar Road serves as a critical north-south corridor
which connects neighborhoods to Lincoln-Way West High School and acts as a primary route for emergency responders to reach Silver Cross Hospital
The Gougar Road Grade Separation Project is aimed at improving safety for all roadway users by reducing a point of conflict between vehicles
It will also reduce traffic delays due to rail traffic
creating the only north-south rail track overpass in at least nine miles in either direction
"The Village of New Lenox is happy to hear that additional funding has been secured for the long-awaited grade separation at Gougar Road," said Village of New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann
"This separation will allow for safer north/south travel for many in Will County
and could be the difference of life and death when it comes to ambulances trying to get to Silver Cross Hospital from the south side of the tracks
Our sincere thanks to our Will County and Federal representatives that have assisted with this project."
The $27,172,100 award from the United States Department of Transportation is part of a $1.1 billion Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program that is supporting 123 rail projects throughout the country
The announcement represents the largest single investment in grade crossing safety in the history of the Federal Railroad Administration
The grant request from Will County received support from the entire Will County congressional delegation
Congressman Bill Foster and Congresswoman Lauren Underwood
It has also received support from the Village of New Lenox
the Illinois Department of Transportation and local state legislators
we have always known conflicts with several pipelines
and the desire to keep northbound traffic moving towards Silver Cross Hospital and I-80 would add significant costs over the bridge itself," said Will County Division of Transportation Director Jeff Ronaldson
"This award secures the funding is in place to move this corridor critical project forward."
Federal funding will support right-of-way acquisition
and will accelerate the current engineering phase of the project
which was initially spaced out over several years to maximize local funding
Both Will County and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) will contribute a 20 percent local match for the federal funds
The ICC has committed $18 million in state funding for project engineering and construction
Construction is projected to begin in 2026
pending land acquisition and utility relocations
The project is one component of Will County’s commitment to improving the entire corridor between Laraway Road and U.S
Route 30 that provides immediate connection to I-80
Other projects along the corridor are in various stages of design
scheduled for construction within the Will County Division of Transportation FY2025-2030 Transportation Improvement Program

IL — Those curious about the sushi restaurant that's taken over the former New Lenox Mod Pizza have a little longer to wait
but the family behind it is eager to let people know their vision
even before the paper comes off the windows
Owned by husband and wife Yong Zhu and Julie Chen
the restaurant is designed as an all-you-can-eat experience that spans sushi
The Orland Hills residents are excited to bring it to life in the space
transforming it from a fast-casual pizza place to a unique
open-kitchen concept Asian fusion restaurant
"A lot of people have stereotypical thoughts with all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants," daughter May Chen told Patch
"That’s not what we want customers and consumers to feel
"You want to feel like you’re walking into a nice facility
The creation of Aji is a testament to both Julie Chen and Zhu's beginnings in the United States
jobs available to them were in the food industry
Zhu would eventually dabble in Chinese buffets and takeout
Chen was offered a job as a server at a Japanese restaurant in Lincoln Park
Chen went on to work at two suburban Japanese and sushi restaurants in Orland Park
"A lot of her customers were from Frankfort
"People would drive from there to get sushi
'Why not bring sushi over there to them?'"
Driving through one day en route to a piano recital
they noticed a similarity between the busy Route 30 corridor
"There was honestly not a lot of Asian fusion here," May said
the all-you-can-eat concept seemed lacking in the area
"There are a lot of all-you-can-eat restaurants in downtown Chicago," she said
"I wouldn’t say my dad is doing food because that was the only option," May said
The design includes an open kitchen—giving customers a view of the grill and sushi stations
you can almost see everything behind the counter," May said
and nearly everything on it—from appetizers
to desserts—is included in the all-you-can-eat offerings
The menu will also include à la carte hibachi
with only 2-3 signature rolls not included in the all-you-can-eat pricing
"Our goal is to have an all-you-can-at place
Customers will have a chance to opt into the pricing of their choosing
All-you-can-eat lunch Monday through Friday from 11 to 3:30 p.m
Price for sushi ranges from vegetable rolls for $4
Soft drinks and smoothies will also be offered
The restaurant is the latest addition brought in by commerical broker Kanton Harzich
but ultimately I was able to secure this restaurant and make the dream come true for my amazing clients," he said
"This will be an awesome addition to our community!"
The decor will be built around Asian fusion influences: sushi lanterns by the sushi bar
May's creativity is also coming into play. The sophomore marketing and advertising major at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign designed the drink, takeout, and all-you-can-eat menu, and business card. A website is still in progress
The family considered several names for the restaurant before settling on Aji
The character seen in their sign also carries the meaning of "taste
A formal opening date is not yet set for Aji Sushi, 651 E. Lincoln Highway, but May hopes it will be by the end of January. Follow them on Instagram
