NEW PHILADELPHIA – If voters approve Issue 10 on the May 6th ballot
the school district can soon begin construction of a new K-6 elementary school and a 7-12 middle and high school building
Superintendent Amy Wentworth says initially
passage of the combined 5.9-mill bond issue and 1-mill tax levy would have allowed them to get started on the new elementary school now and the new middle-high school in the near future
she recently heard from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission that work on both schools can begin upon passage of the bond issue
She says the bond issue and school district would fund 45 percent
while the state would fund 55 percent of the roughly $146 million in construction costs
Wentworth does not believe the district will see this type of deal again if Issue 10 fails
best opportunity that voters are going to have to address these needs for New Philadelphia Schools,” she said
The elementary school would be built behind South School
The new middle-high school would be built behind Welty Middle School and the high school
Wentworth says all schools would stay open during construction
Issue 10 would cost New Philadelphia homeowners $242 per year for every $100,000 of property value
but again it is only going to go up over time,” Wentworth said
“This is the best chance to do it in the most economical way.”
Wentworth says she believes the district has addressed some of the voters’ concerns
They have nailed down a location for the middle-and-high school and addressed traffic concerns for the south side
Wentworth says the existing buildings have leaks
the district is using outdoor modular classrooms at each of its elementary schools
“When the state came in and evaluated our current facilities
they determined that is was actually cheaper to tear down what we have and build new because we have so many significant problems now and others that are just waiting to erupt at any given moment.”

NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ More residents spoke out at Monday's city council meeting against a proposal to expand the time of operation of the downtown DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) from special events only to seven days a week
Council had been scheduled to give the expansion legislation its third and final reading and then vote on it
because only three members were in attendance
"There are people who have grown up from infant all the way up to 40 years
50 years that have been surrounded by drugs and alcohol their entire life
and they feel hopeless that there's something different out there for them," said Jamie Cunningham
"With changing the DORA to being every day

She leads the Rewired recovery program at Revive Church in New Philadelphia
"I live a half a block away from where the DORA limits are
I don't want my kids to think that it's normal for people to be drinking alcohol
that that's the only thing you have to do when you're an adult."
What changes are proposed for New Philadelphia's DORA?The expanded DORA hours would allow residents and visitors to open carry alcohol in the downtown 4 to 9 p.m
someone could purchase alcohol at a bar and walk around on the street with the beverage in a designated container
The container would have to be purchased at one of the participating DORA establishments
DORA cup labels consistent with DORA branding are purchased and distributed by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1445 in New Philadelphia

Participating DORA establishments include Gavin's Grill

NEW PHILADELPHIA — They’re playing their best softball at the right time of the year
With the postseason tournament draw not too far off
the senior-laden New Philadelphia softball team appears to be peaking at the best time of the season
just like veteran Quaker head coach John Dupke hoped they would
which plays in the rugged Ohio Cardinal Conference
“A lot of teams would be happy to be (13-7) at this point and in the (powerful) league we’re in and with the teams we’ve played this year,” Dupke said
but I feel at this point we’re in a good spot
We need to continue to grow and learn and play these tight games and hopefully that is going to reward us when it comes tournament time that we can play in tight games."

New Philadelphia has a rich history in softball
The Quakers’ senior class has won 65 games and counting over the past four seasons
They have also advanced to the district tournament in three of the past four campaigns
The Quakers’ talented 2025 starting lineup includes senior catcher Reese Loveday
senior pitcher-first baseman Olivia Jackson
junior pitcher-first baseman Jillian Howard
junior second baseman Sara Cardani and junior Kaitlyn Hughes
senior third baseman Ellie Mason and junior Jaila Gonzalez
freshman left fielder Marissa Roth and junior outfielder Kyleigh Jones
but our go-to kids are Ellie Mason and Reese Loveday," Dupke said
Mason is batting .470 on the season with 21 RBIs
She also hits for power and leads the Quakers with five home runs
Loveday is hitting .312 and has driven in 14 runs
Three other key players with top batting averages include Vandall
Cardani who checks in with a .360 batting average and Miller who is hitting .333
they have led a New Philadelphia offense that is averaging just under eight runs per-game and is defeating its opponents by an average of five runs-per-contest
The Quakers have also been strong in the circle
Pitchers Jackson and Howard are holding opponents to an average of just 2.8 runs-per-game
New Philadelphia has moved down from Division II to Division III in the new seven division format the Ohio High School Athletic Association is rolling out for the first time this spring
While expansion of the divisions will likely provide more opportunities for deep playoff runs
it has created a power-laden logjam in Division III of the Eastern District
because we’re looking at our sectional with Dover
We were talking about how that five (team) sectional could have four teams at or around 20 wins come tournament time," Dupke said
Despite the challenging D3 sectional field
“I think tournament time is going to be really exciting,” he said “I think one of those four (in the East) can go all the way to regionals if everything falls the right way
I keep telling the girls we can be that one to come out of there and go to regionals.”
