More than two years after receiving their first tip about suspected sex trafficking at a downtown New Prague massage parlor, police raided the business and arrested its owner on allegations of promoting prostitution. The police action occurred Monday at 4 U Massage in the 800 block of 1st Street SE., in the city of roughly 8,200 on the southern outskirts of the Twin Cities. Along with arresting the owner, a 49-year-old woman, police seized sheets, towels and condoms that they believe have physical evidence pointing to illicit sex occurring at the parlor. The woman was released from jail Wednesday pending further investigation and without charges filed against her or any of her clients. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects before they are charged. A search warrant affidavit filed in court cleared the way for the police raid. It spells out how the investigation began in December 2022 and progressed until this week’s raid. On Dec. 29, 2022, a 34-year-old man told police he went to the parlor for a massage. The staff member signaled him non-verbally twice about her performing a sex act on him, which he declined. In July 2024, Fridley police shared with their counterparts in New Prague that sexually oriented ads for 4 U Massage were posted online. In January and February, three men told police of women working at the parlor offering sex to them. One of the men said he has had sex at the parlor three or four times and visited a massage parlor in New Ulm, Minn., as well. “An employee told him they trade girls between the two massage parlors every three weeks,” the filing read. The 5 defendants have been distributing meth and fentanyl throughout the state since at least 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office says. A Mexican national orchestrated a multinational drug-smuggling operation in Minnesota that was affiliated with the notorious Sureños cartel, according to grand jury indictments filed against five people. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the five have been operating and distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl throughout the state since at least 2024. Law enforcement “seized large amounts of methamphetamine and fentanyl” in the course of its nearly yearlong investigation, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and court records. Implicated as the ringleader is Erick Emilio Diaz-Aguilar, 32, of New Prague. He’s charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, four counts of distribution of methamphetamine, and one count of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine. Also charged with various drug-related counts are Juan Martin Elvira Jr., 36, of Rochester; Edward Gonzalez, 29, of Hastings; and Eric Anthony Rodriguez, 46, of St. Paul. A message was left with an attorney for Diaz-Aguilar seeking his response to the allegations. Attorneys for the other defendants all declined to comment. One other member of the conspiracy remained at large as of Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not disclose their identity. “The Sureños and other drug cartels are dangerous criminal organizations that are fueling the drug crisis in America,” Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick said in a statement announcing the indictments. A government court filing last week disclosed that “agents conducted extensive hours of electronic and physical surveillance; facilitated multiple controlled drug purchases; reviewed large amounts of phone data, public records and other documents; and seized other evidence as part of multiple search warrant efforts.” Kirkpatrick’s statement read that “cartel-backed drug dealers are on notice. Do not bring your poison to Minnesota. If you do, you will see federal charges and federal prison time.” Sureños, also known as Sur 13, is a transnational criminal street gang that originated in Southern California with hundreds of cliques around the United States. The Sureños and affiliates pay tribute to the Mexican Mafia, and the number “13” is their symbol signifying “M” in the alphabet for Mexican Mafia. Sureños gang members have been involved in murder, extortion, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution and other crimes, according to federal law enforcement. The latest indictments are the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and is part of the Justice Department’s “Operation Take Back America,” whose mission among other things includes combating illegal immigration and drug cartel activity in the United States. After a Marshall forfeit at 107 pounds, the Tigers won the next two matches to tie the dual.  Andrew Yang got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a 10-5 victory.  At 121 pounds, No. 1AA Lincoln Christenson improved his season record to 5-0 with a 7-0 decision over Elijah Lofton.   Following the wins by Yang and Christenson the Trojans would win the next three matches take their biggest lead of the dual.  After a forfeit at 127 pounds by the Tigers, the Trojans Cody Thompson won by technical fall over freshman Levi Kraft at 133. At 121 pounds, Christenson gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead with a 19-1 technical fall victory.  At 127 pounds, the Saints reclaimed the lead in the dual as Ashton Charmoli defeated Levi Kraft.  The lead didn’t last long as the Tigers won the next two weights.  At 133 pounds, the Tigers’ Williams picked up a win by forfeit and Marthaler then won by major decision at 139 pounds.   Following Marthaler’s win the Tigers and Saints went back and forth over the next five weights. Seven wards and five branches make up the Prague Czech Republic Stake, which was created in 2016 and was the first in the country The ceremonial groundbreaking for the new stake center was held on April 12, reported the Church’s Europe Newsroom government officials and interfaith and other representatives attended Elder Martin Pilka, an Area Seventy in the Europe Central Area — who was the first Czech missionary in 1991 — told the Church News that the construction was expected to begin in June but has now been pushed to July He explained that the April event was not only a groundbreaking for the construction but it was also a symbolic breaking of ground in relationship to the public “Members of the Church in the Czech Republic have strived to live the gospel be open and be a light for others for many years,” Elder Pilka said it was officially manifested that the Church is welcomed by government for they see what good the Church and its members do.” Church leaders emphasized how the stake center will also be a resource for the community After the building is finished, it will be used for Sunday church meetings, as well as cultural and social events — such as weddings, funerals, concerts, balls, children’s activities, holiday gatherings and sporting events. The stake center will hold free EnglishConnect classes and have free family history resources through FamilySearch one of the largest genealogy organizations in the world Free classes and group meetings offered by the Church cover topics such as self-reliance the building could also serve as a central gathering place for crisis situations various humanitarian efforts or other uses “The reason for this construction here is that this place can serve the public,” Elder Pilka said “so that it is used for something good and that people from near and far neighborhoods can come to this place in Prague where they can find spiritual and Christian values and a refuge from the world.” He said at the ceremony: “We try to do good things in the world through the Church So that people have the opportunity to know the effect of faith in Jesus Christ.” Stake President Jan Pohořelický expressed his belief in greater openness between the Church and the community and mutual cooperation “I think that this building will really open the door for mutual interreligious communication and that we will be happy about it,” he said Members of the Church from around the country came to the groundbreaking ceremony as did friends of the Church and residents of Prague 4 — who were interested in what the building will look like and asked about the history of the Church and the lives of its members shops and a metro stop are all being built in the area making it a place of “hustle and bustle,” the mayor said “I think that a community center with a spiritual dimension will be the building that will perfectly fit into this place and bring relaxation,” he said “And I also think it will be a beautiful addition and synergistic effect in this beautiful location.” The stake center project has been years in the making Elder Pilka thanked all who played a role in the planning and approval process and those who will continue to be a part of the construction Then-Czechoslovakia was opened for missionary work after a prayer on July 24, 1929, by Elder John A. Widtsoe on Priest Hill. After World War II, the ensuing rise of the Communist Party and the government ban on the Church in 1950, Czech Latter-day Saints remained faithful for five decades, despite not openly practicing their faith but trying to be as creative and frequent as possible in their meetings and associations. That included some members teaching “Christian yoga” classes as a way to share gospel principles — with some 130 people being converted to the Church. In February 1989, the communist government fell, and religious freedom was established. On Feb. 6, 1990, then-Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles climbed Priest Hill and offered a prayer of gratitude, reconfirming the prayer Elder Widtsoe had offered six decades earlier. The Church was granted official recognition on March 1, 1990. Bruegger defeated freshman teammate Hailey Proshek on a tiebreaker, and the other meet came down to the final two routines. One night after coming up just short, finishing as runners-up to Owatonna in the Class 2A team tournament, two gymnasts from No. 1-ranked New Prague put on a riveting duel for the all-around championship. It was so evenly matched that, after all four events, a tiebreaker was needed to determine the winner. Senior Ava Bruegger took the championship in Roy Wilkins Auditorium on Saturday, defeating freshman Hailey Proshek. Both were awarded Class 2A All-State elite honors at the state meet banquet Thursday, and they spent most of the Class 2A meet competing neck-and-neck for the title. Entering the final event of the night, the always nerve-jangling balance beam, Bruegger held a slight edge. Neither girl knew what was at stake when they started their final routines. Proshek kicked off the event with a solid 9.050, staying on the beam after narrowly avoiding a fall, and posted a 37.575 to take over the lead in the all-around. Bruegger had to wait until the end of the meet to perform. She did just enough to win. She had a fall during her required acrobatic series on the beam and posted an 8.7, bringing the teammates into a tie at 37.252. “Beam is my struggle,” Bruegger said. “I was actually more worried about my aerial than my series.” But the tiebreaker went to Bruegger, whose total of all four scores on the final event narrowly outpointed Proshek. “I’m just super happy,” Bruegger said. “I’ve wanted this ever since I was a little kid. I remember sitting in the stands in second grade and watching the other gymnasts win this.” Lakeville South’s Piper Keith was third with a 37.475. The event winners were Cordelia Neumann of Owatonna on beam (9.475), Proshek on uneven bars (9.575), Kaia Bauerova of Waconia on vault (9.825) and Bruegger on floor exercise. This was just what the guiding forces behind the girls gymnastics state meet shoot for. The all-around championship of the Class 1A meet Saturday was largely determined by the final two routines of the day. And even when that was over, the parties involved had no idea where they stood until their names were called 15 minutes later. Monticello junior Lauren Hansen had the top performance of the meet in the floor exercise, posting a 9.525 to bounce over North Branch senior Dakota Esget, the defending all-around champ who held a slight lead heading into the final rotation. Hansen finished with a meet-winning score of 37.475, outpointing Detroit Lakes' Maggie Schander, who vaulted into second place on the strength of the best single-event score of the day, a 9.775 vault, for an overall 37.35. Esget was third with a 37.325. Hadassa Gonzalez of Mound-Westonka/Watertown-Mayer won the balance beam with a 9.3875. Hansen admitted she knew she’d been having a strong overall meet but didn’t know she’d won until it was announced. No parents, no coaches, no teammates let it slip? Hansen, who was third in the all-around in 2024 — “I wasn’t satisfied with that,” she said — said her overall state tournament experience was what she hoped it would be. Not only did she win the all-around, but she also took first place in two individual events, uneven bars and floor exercise, to help her team to second place in the team competition Friday and was named to the Class 1A All-State Elite team at Thursday’s pre-tournament banquet. “It was just what I wanted. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” she said. “I feel like I’ve worked so hard all year and I’ve been pushed by my teammates so much, and to come together as a team to get second place and then win individually the next day is really, really nice.” Esget is a three-time state champion, winner on the uneven bars in 2023 and 2024 and of the all-around in 2024, but she said defending her titles was not her priority in the meet. A three-sport athlete, Esget, who also plays volleyball and runs track, said Saturday was her farewell to competitive gymnastics. She’s headed to St. Thomas to study biology with an eye toward becoming a dentist or a physician’s assistant. She has a plan to satisfy any lingering longing for gymnastics. “I coach younger gymnasts, around like 7 to 11 years old, so that will be my way of getting back in the gym,” she said. “I want to share my knowledge of everything that’s happened through my sports life.” Esget said she enjoyed the introduction before the meet of the many previous state champions who returned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the state meet’s connection with the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Coaches Association. “It was cool to see them celebrate their past success,” Esget said. “That was my goal my senior year, to just enjoy gymnastics as it is.” You don't have permission to access the page you requested What is this page? The website you are visiting is protected. For security reasons this page cannot be displayed WORTHINGTON — Worthington’s high school gymnastics team was once-again victorious in a meet scoring 138.325 points Thursday against New Ulm That was the highest team score from the Trojans so far this season Freshman Brooklyn Dykstra was the lone Trojan to compete in the all-around and she put together her highest score of the season at 35.25 Dykstra was first on the bars with a score of 8.775 and the floor with 9.175 She was also second on the balance beam with a score of 8.475 and scored 8.825 on the vault Josie Sellner and Sophia Berger of New Ulm also competed in the all-around with scores of 33.75 and 33.4 respectively Worthington placed all in the top five on the vault with Olivia Bullerman getting first with a score of 9.15 Marley Phomsatry scored 8.95 and Lucy Thier scored 8.875 Jada Milbrath tied Dykstra for first with a score of 8.775 Jordis Weber placed fourth with a score of 8.175 and Phomsatry and Kenadie Thiner each scored 7.975 for fifth After Berger placed first on the beam for New Ulm with a score of 8.8 Thier was third at 8.45 and Weber fourth at 8.1 Milbrath scored 7.925 and Thiner scored 7.125 The typical final event for WHS is the floor exercise and the Trojans placed four of the top five Thiner 8.95 for fourth and Lazzu 8.55 for fifth Sellner tied for second with Thier for New Ulm with a score of 9.025 as well WHS will head to New Prageue Saturday at 11 a.m for an invite before returning home to the Worthington Gymnastics Facility next Thursday for a meet against Jackson County Central
