Authorities confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency responders were called to his residence. No foul play is currently suspected, and an autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death. Described as a deeply compassionate leader and a devoted shepherd to his flock, Pastor Schonemann had led Christ Alive Church for several years, becoming a spiritual anchor for many in the region. The small but tight-knit church body is now left processing not only grief but also uncertainty about the future. “William wasn’t just our pastor—he was our friend, our counselor, and someone who truly lived out the love of Christ,” said a longtime member of the congregation who requested anonymity. “His absence is a deep wound to our church family.” According to CP, Schonemann had publicly shared about his health struggles in the past, including a spinal condition. However, no connection has yet been confirmed between these issues and his unexpected passing. Members of the broader Christian community have begun offering prayers and condolences online, with many highlighting his faithful service and gentle spirit. Church leadership has announced that grief counseling will be made available to members, and a memorial service is currently being planned. As the church mourns, congregants are holding fast to their faith, clinging to the hope that their pastor so often preached from the pulpit—a hope rooted not in circumstances, but in the promises of Christ. “This is a heartbreaking loss,” the church stated in an online message. “But we know Pastor William is now with the Lord he loved so deeply.” Greg Laurie: Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Remake Abandons Original Themes of Love and Redemption Pastor Greg Laurie founder of the renowned Harvest Christian Fellowship recently criticized Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White saying it strays far from the gospel-inspired message of love and redemption found in the original Netflix has come under fire from Christian audiences after viewers noticed that a significant Bible verse—Isaiah 53:5—appears to be missing from the opening scene of The Passion of the Christ on the platform Liverpool FC forward Cody Gakpo is set to receive a formal warning from the Football Association (FA) after displaying a Christian message during a recent Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur Gakpo lifted his jersey to reveal an undershirt bearing the message “I Belong To Jesus,” raising both hands toward the sky in a clear act of religious expression the latest animated depiction of the life of Jesus Christ is receiving strong reviews from major critics for its creative framing and compelling voice acting In a development that has stirred both public interest and internal division the elders of Fellowship Church in Huntersville have publicly rejected the findings of a months-long investigation that cleared Dr Michael Brown of any legal or ethical misconduct Cheers and the sound of ceremonial shovels marked a historic moment on April 24 as federal Glenn Youngkin and Virginia Tech President Tim Sands broke ground on the New River Valley Passenger Rail Project in Christiansburg The long-awaited return of passenger rail service is expected to provide a transformative boost to sustainability marked the official start of construction for a new Amtrak station that will restore service to the New River Valley for the first time since 1979 Led by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority and the New River Valley Passenger Rail Station Authority the project is expected to serve tens of thousands of riders annually and surrounding communities to major metropolitan areas through an expanded Amtrak Virginia network Youngkin celebrated the project as a major win for the region and the commonwealth "This is about investing in the future of Virginia and making it easier for Virginians to thrive," Youngkin said "Passenger rail in the New River Valley means more growth and more prosperity for generations to come." Sheppard Miller III said “The new agreement between VPRA and Norfolk Southern is the reason we are here breaking ground on a project that will provide additional connectivity and promote economic growth in the New River Valley.” The extension of service to Christiansburg will be via Norfolk Southern’s main line (N-Line) the result of an agreement between VPRA and Norfolk Southern completed last September through which VPRA purchased the Manassas Line and gained access to the N-Line By expanding service from Roanoke to Christiansburg on the N-Line VPRA will use existing infrastructure with a focus on developing a station stop at the Cambria site which previously served the community from 1904 to 1979 The project will also enhance Norfolk Southern’s freight service through the area The New River Valley Passenger Rail Station Authority—created by the Virginia General Assembly in 2021—has the lead in the renovation of the historic Christiansburg station building at Cambria It will be called the New River Valley Station and renovations are expected to begin in 2027 The estimated cost of VPRA’s New River Valley Project is $264.5 million Preliminary construction began in late February 2025 with full construction commencing this spring Amtrak Virginia service is expected to begin in 2027 with two daily roundtrips between Christiansburg and Washington Trip times are estimated to be 50 minutes between Christiansburg and Roanoke and just under six hours between Christiansburg and Washington the service will continue onto Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor to Philadelphia “The groundbreaking of the New River Valley Project represents what can be achieved through strong partnerships,” Executive Director of VPRA DJ Stadtler said “This project would not be possible without the shared vision of providing Virginians with a rail alternative and Amtrak for their foresight and support in bringing passenger rail back to the New River Valley.” “We are witnessing a remarkable resurgence of passenger rail in the Commonwealth,” Tiffany Robinson, Director of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation “Virginia is already home to some of the busiest Amtrak stations in the Southeast and we continue to see record ridership year after year I’m proud of DRPT’s partnership with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority on this transformative project and I’m excited to see the New River Valley take its place in the growing future of passenger rail across the Commonwealth.” “Expanding rail service and connecting people across the Commonwealth is great for local economies, cuts traffic, and improves air quality. It is great to be in Christiansburg today for the groundbreaking ceremony of the New River Valley Station, which will provide service to Roanoke and beyond,” Senator Tim Kaine said “I was proud to extend passenger rail service to Lynchburg as Governor support the expansion of service to Roanoke early in my Senate tenure and secure federal funds for the platform study that landed on the location for this extension to Christiansburg to make travel more convenient and consistent across Virginia.” “Passenger rail creates greater potential for sustained economic growth, facilitates job creation Commonwealth I’m so proud to be a part of this team that has worked tirelessly to make this day a reality.” “We are proud to partner with VPRA to enable the return of passenger rail service to the New River Valley,” Norfolk Southern Chief Strategy Officer Mike McClellan said “This project not only demonstrates our shared vision for smart sustainable transportation solutions in the Commonwealth but also our deep commitment to strengthening the communities we serve.” “This groundbreaking is a critical milestone in the Transforming Rail in Virginia project that will ultimately increase rail CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – More than a hundred people gathered at the historic Cambria site Wednesday to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for Montgomery County’s new Amtrak station, marking a significant milestone in Virginia’s passenger rail expansion. The project, which has been under discussion for over a decade, will refurbish and modernize the Cambria train station, with passenger service expected to begin in 2027. “This is a dream that is in progress still that began decades ago,” said Virginia Senator Tim Kaine. “I have been very proud as senator to battle for Amtrak funding to get us to Roanoke and then funding for this particular project to help find the right site for a passenger station here in Christiansburg.” Governor Glenn Youngkin joined local and state officials at the groundbreaking, emphasizing the project’s significance for regional connectivity. “Folks from the greater Montgomery County, Christiansburg, can in fact get real access to the rest of the east coast without going on I-81,” Youngkin said. “It’ll be great to have an alternative to jump on this great rail service.” Have the day's biggest stories arrive in your inbox every day at 8 p.m. The station’s location sparked considerable debate before officials decided to return to the historic Cambria site, where the original station once stood. “We had countless meetings with the community, and they were very honest as you may expect with their opinion,” said DJ Stadtler, Executive Director of Virginia Passenger Rail Authority. “They said you know what, the sight by the mall would be great, we understand that’s very very expensive, the site out at cinnabar road, not so good. We really, really want here at Cambria.” Christiansburg Mayor Mike Barber said he’s excited to finally see the project move forward. “It’s been a long effort, a lot of time spent on it, but it’s been time and money well spent,” he said. The new station represents a significant expansion of Virginia’s passenger rail network, providing Southwest Virginia residents with direct access to the Eastern Seaboard’s rail corridor. This plan is the result of an agreement between VPRA and Norfolk Southern completed last September through which VPRA purchased the Manassas Line and gained access to the N-Line VPRA says it will use existing infrastructure with a focus on developing a station stop at the Cambria site which previously served the community from 1904 to 1979 The project will also enhance Norfolk Southern’s freight service through the area.  The New River Valley Passenger Rail Station Authority—created by the Virginia General Assembly in 2021—will be called the New River Valley Station and renovations are expected to begin in 2027.  VPRA estimates the cost of its New River Valley Project to come to $264.5 million Preliminary construction began in late February 2025 with full construction commencing this spring.  VPRA expects Amtrak Virginia service to begin in 2027 with two daily roundtrips between Christiansburg and Washington the service will continue onto Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor to Philadelphia This project will replace two bridges: the northbound Interstate 81 bridge over the New River and the Route 232 bridge over I-81 at exit 105 (Radford) The northbound I-81 bridge over the New River was built in 1965 and showed signs of age The new bridge will have an extended off ramp for exit 105 and wider shoulders The new bridge over the New River was built in the median next to the old structure so two lanes of northbound I-81 can remain open during construction The new bridge is now open to traffic and the old bridge will be demolished.    The Route 232 bridge crosses over the interstate and was replaced to span the longer deceleration lane at exit 105 and wider shoulders on the new bridge over the New River It has been completed and is open to traffic The original bridge on I-81 pictured below was opened to traffic in 1965 This project will replace the aging northbound bridge over the New River and widen the shoulders and approaches The northbound deceleration lane will be extended providing an additional factor of safety for traffic entering or exiting from I-81 at exit 105 Lat/long: ' + markerLat.trim().substring(0,9) + ' The new bridge over the New River will be built in the median parallel to the existing structure so two lanes of traffic can be maintained in each direction on I-81 during construction Estimated cost of the project: $62.2 million The contract was awarded to Vecellio and Grogan Inc Please note that this file is not ADA compliant This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page News & Reviews News Wire Virginia marks groundbreaking for Amtrak extension to New River Valley Glenn Youngkin led the list of officials on hand Thursday (April 24 2025) for groundbreaking on the New River Valley Rail Project which will allow extension of Amtrak service from Roanoke it will be the first time the New River Valley has had passenger service since 1979 “I look forward to all that this station will do to support and grow such an important region of the Commonwealth.” Studies had determined it could have cost up to $1 billion to prepare the route to reach Christiansburg and precluded eventual extension to Bristol the project launched Thursday will include service on the original Norfolk & Western line to Christianburg where a historic station will be renovated and a new platform built Work will also include an Amtrak layover facility 10 miles away in Radford The project is estimated to cost $265.4 million Preliminary work began in February but full construction will commence this spring with trips taking 50 minutes between Christiansburg and Roanoke and about six hours between Christiansburg and Washington “The groundbreaking of the New River Valley Project represents what can be achieved through strong partnerships,” said Virginia Passenger Rail Authority Executive Director DJ Stadtler “This project would not be possible without the shared vision of providing Virginians with a rail alternative.” Said Jennifer Mitchell Amtrak executive vice president of strategy and planning ““This groundbreaking is a critical milestone in the Transforming Rail in Virginia project that will ultimately increase rail service in the Commonwealth.” Additional details on the project are available at the VPRA website. Video from the event is available here Service on the VRPA’s Roanoke corridor began with a single round trip between Lynchburg and Washington in 2009 and was subsequently extended to Roanoke Ridership has grown from just over 100,000 in 2009 to more than 343,000 in 2024 I’m not clear on the Radford situation If the train is going to lay over there why wouldn’t you have passenger service continue on to it with 9,000 college students (included or not included in it) would indicate at least a few passengers would be served by any train that’s already going to the area DC to Blacksburg/Christiansburg is 4 hours when there’s no traffic My niece used to attend VT and the population of students alone will support this service Between VT and Radford there are nearly 50,000 students Virginia will continue its progress on advancing passenger rail by convincing Amtrak to reroute the CARDINAL off the CSX single-track line between Culpepper (CLP) and Charlottesville (CVS) onto the NS double-track line between those cities This would speed-up the CARDINAL by 26 minutes This reroute would require a back-up move on the existing connecting track at the Charlottesville Station OR Virginia could fund a new connecting track under the Main Street that would allow the CARDINAL to operate through the Charlottesville Station without a backup This would further promote a daily CARDINAL operation unless this one isn’t Amtrak-funded So Amtrak agrees to a layover facility 10 miles away for a tiny city of 23,348 (ranked 238 out of 387 metropolitan areas in the U.S.) but won’t do 4 miles in massively popular Miami to serve it’s bustling modern airport facility which they admit will increase ridership The long layover distance caught my attention too but remember: since this is a state-supported train Virginia is on the hook for the costs associated with the long deadhead/layover move The Miami trains are long-distance trains so Amtrak would have to pay those costs instead whether it is long distance or state supported corridors is should be serving city centers as the best outcome over the long haul Miami was cluster but on the bright side if somehow someway that Amtrak can find itself sharing Brightline’s Miami central station would be a much better plan I think it is doable just not sure of the logistics from routing down to the platform requirements but Radford university does have ~~` 9000 students How many are local and does the city’s pop include the university This IMO is an example of a station that needs only a mini high for ADA ADA can be detrimental to allow proper Amtrak small cities service Members enjoy 15% off any purchase in our store. The motion to table failed 4-3, the same margin by which the council passed the ordinance’s first reading moments later. (The debate begins at the 36:19 mark here.) stood to vote against the ordinance and led the room in praying the Lord’s Prayer “There’s no way on God’s green Earth that anyone should vote for this ordinance,” council member James Quinlisk said to loud applause and shouts as he cast a no vote He said passing the ordinance would set up the town for a lawsuit “one that I don’t think (the mayor) understands the scale of.” has proposed adding a facility to its campus allowing for a 17-bed homeless shelter Under The Episcopal Church’s so-called “Dennis Canon” (Canon 1.7.4) a parish holds its property in trust for the diocese and The Episcopal Church While the Toms River council does not take public comment during the first reading of any proposed ordinance the members got an earful April 30 during the meeting’s general comment time The speakers included people who said they had been or currently were homeless “I don’t know whether you believe in Christ or believe in God but when you start messing with his children you’ve got a lot of trouble,” Toms River resident Angie Feldman said a Christ Church member who said he was speaking only for himself told the council that he wonders what he can do to help alleviate the problem of homelessness “But I feel like there’s something my church can do I don’t know how many of you will be here in 10 years Mary Frances Schjonberg is a Community Preservation grant money to install a 200-foot dock for rowers on the upper Acushnet River may be on again Councilor Maria Giesta made the motion to take another look has stated the Acushnet River dock project would open the upper Acushnet River up for public recreational access for the first time in more than three decades The proposed site is off 720 Belleville Ave. Aerovox manufactured electrical components The process used PCBs and chlorinated solvents until the late 1970s and the site has been part of EPA cleanup efforts The company declared bankruptcy in 2001 and abandoned the property The 450,000-square-foot building was razed and the city owns the 10-acre site “The community has been without safe recreational access to the upper Acushnet River for 30-plus years as it has undergone cleanup efforts by the EPA the waters are again safe to the public and are open to the 100,000 residents within three miles of the river There is currently no safe launching point for recreational watercraft,” according to the project application Recreation and Beaches assistant project manager said during an earlier meeting on the proposal that the ultimate goal was to build a rowing center at the site He said the site is also where the New Bedford River Walk will end The 17,000-foot recreational waterfront path is planned for the upper harbor along the western bank of the Acushnet River Laying out a crew competition racecourse on the Acushnet River was also planned in a future phase Rick Porteus was among those critical of the process While supporting the idea of a infrastructure, aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth in the region. The New River Valley, encompassing cities like Lynchburg and Roanoke, has historically been underserved by passenger rail services. This extension is part of a broader initiative to revitalize rail travel in the United States, responding to increasing demand for sustainable and efficient transportation options. The push for this extension began in the early 2000s, driven by local advocacy groups, regional planners, and state officials who recognized the potential benefits of improved rail service. The New River Valley is known for its scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, and educational institutions, making it a desirable destination for both residents and tourists. The absence of direct rail service limited access to these attractions and hindered economic development. The journey toward the Amtrak extension into the New River Valley has been marked by several key milestones: Amanda Stellwag is a Content Gatherer and joined the WSLS 10 News team in December 2024. Having spent so many summers there growing up this is the most water I've ever seen in the Red River South of Hollis And his comments on the "new" river bridge are bang-on The old iron bridge was terrifyingly beautiful in its own rusty While there are some pretty narrow spots in the river along our shared border with Texas though most stretch between 1/4 & 1/2 miles in width If you calculate that the average flood stage is 25 feet it amounts to a massive amount of water that would be required to flood That being said, it has happened before, but flood warnings are happening now in narrow portions of the river basin Even if it manages to rise out of its banks between now and when this severe weather cycle takes a break early next week could it overflow some of the lower bridges a lot of the older Red River bridges have been replaced over the last twenty or thirty years flood waters from this river sprawl well beyond the lands that are lower than the surrounding roads and bridges.. That being said, it has happened before, but flood warnings are happening now in narrow portions of the river basin. Even if it manages to rise out of its banks between now and when this severe weather cycle takes a break early next week, could it overflow some of the lower bridges? As pointed out in Gary's video, a lot of the older Red River bridges have been replaced over the last twenty or thirty years. Brought up to modern codes, including taller heights. Still, flood waters from this river sprawl well beyond the lands that are lower than the surrounding roads and bridges... but as they say, never say never.
