The Chicago Bears continued to shore up the offensive line with the selection of Michigan State guard Luke Newman with the 195th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft
Newman is a versatile offensive lineman with a ton of potential. He won't be called upon as a starter as a rookie -- with the Bears committing resources to overhauling the entire interior -- but he could develop into a contributor down the line
"Newman is a competitive zone-scheme guard with below-average power by NFL standards
He plays with adequate foot quickness to mirror his gaps but his lunging and wide hands need to be corrected
Holes in his technique will be exploited by NFL talent and he might not have enough runway to get them corrected with more coaching." -- Lance Zierlein
and earned all-league honors at left tackle and defensive tackle
he received only FCS recruiting interest and committed to Holy Cross over Lafayette
He earned the starting left tackle job in his second season and ripped off 37 straight starts
he considered going pro but instead jumped into the portal and transferred back home (his parents are both Michigan State alums)
he moved to left guard and started every game there in 2024
Newman is quick in his pass sets to shuffle
slide and mirror while also tracking blitzers
He has the upper-body torque to dump rushers but doesn't show the same power as a drive blocker to displace in the run game
Newman will have a tough time controlling the point of attack against long-armed defensive linemen
demeanor and durability should give him a chance to stand out in an NFL training camp
"He was one of those guys that as you went through the process
he slowly checked every box and did everything right
And you get to the end of the process and he's clean
and it kind of married up." -- Bears director of college scouting Brett Ackley
This feels like the Doug Kramer pick from three years ago if Kramer showed promise of playing multiple positions in college and was a little bigger
Having that type of versatility on the offensive line is key
and it's fair to wonder where the Bears might want to put Newman

In February, MBW broke the news that Ole Obermann was leaving his role as Global Head of Music Business Development at ByteDance after five and a half years
Our sources told us that he had lined up a big role at Apple Music
Today (April 29), we can confirm that Obermann has indeed joined Apple
in a newly created role in music focused on strategy and innovation
MBW understands that Obermann has taken up a joint leadership position at Apple Music alongside Rachel Newman as the new Co-Heads, Apple Music, reporting into Oliver Schusser
According to an internal announcement sent out this afternoon
Obermann and Newman will help “lead the service into its next phase”
Los Angeles-based Rachel Newman is an Apple veteran who has spent more than 16 years at the company
Newman has stepped up to the co-leadership role from her previous role as Global Head of Content and Editorial at the music streaming platform
she worked as the iTunes Australia/New Zealand Manager
Obermann was previously responsible for driving ByteDance/TikTok’s music strategy
Obermann originally joined TikTok in 2019 as Vice President, Global Head of Music. It was later confirmed that Obermann’s role had expanded to become Global Head of Music Business Development and IP at ByteDance
Following Obermann’s departure from ByteDance at the end of March, Tracy Gardner was appointed as the company’s new Global Head of Music Business Development
Apple’s internal announcement today called Obermann a “well-respected leader in the music industry” who “negotiated landmark deals during his tenure” at TikTok
Universal and TikTok struck a new licensing deal in May 2024
including “improved remuneration” for UMG artists and songwriters
as well as a commitment to develop AI tools responsibly
Obermann is also credited with closing what TikTok describes as “a first-of-its-kind artist deal with Taylor Swift” to feature her catalog on TikTok in support of her record-breaking Eras Tour and The Tortured Poets Department album release

some CBC pundits dropped much of the pretense of impartiality as soon as an “at least Liberal minority” was predicted shortly after 10 p.m
the national broadcaster’s hosts and commentators could breathe a sigh of relief that they wouldn’t be delivering their own eulogy

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre campaigned on defunding the English service of CBC
rather than propped up by government and Canadian taxpayers despite poor viewership and constant complaints about anti-conservative bias
And if this didn’t give CBC pundits cause to celebrate
the Conservatives’ projected loss meant that not only would CBC not be defunded
it’d be accepting a boost of $150 million from Mark Carney’s Liberals
A few CBC pundits’ sudden shift of tone and election night commentary made this conflict of interest painfully obvious
The CBC’s subsidy is already a whopping $1.4 billion
Under their “Protect Our Shared Canadian Identity for a Change” section of their platform
Poilievre’s Conservatives promised savings to Canadians through “defunding the CBC and reforming Crown corporations while maintaining Radio-Canada services.” Their main argument is one shared by many Canadians
that: “English-language CBC should be a Canadian-owned
self-sufficient media organization that is a not-for-profit and supported by listeners

There are good reasons to support such a change
exorbitant bonuses paid to executives despite its poor performance
and the fool-headed notion that a Crown media corporation should even exist (for obvious political reasons)
let alone be concerning itself with defining national identity in terms of what it deems “predominantly and distinctively Canadian.”
newspapers such as National Post and the Globe and Mail
as well as online-only outlets at a huge disadvantage
A strong argument can be made that CBC’s free online news articles and broadcasts are hobbling private media and causing the need for labour subsidies for these outlets in the first place
the Liberals have decided you have to pay for a CBC subscription by default
Conservatives simply believe you should have the autonomy to make that decision yourself
If Canadians couldn’t wake up and hop onto CBC news online or on television for free
they would possibly have to buy a subscription
while its mandate mentions representing English and French
as well as national and regional perspectives
nowhere is there a promise to reflect ideological diversity
And while this is arguably not a necessity for private
independent media — take a look at France and the U.K.
which have strong liberal and conservative outlets serving as accepted counterweights in society — surely
should have to be held to such an ideal if it wants to be seen as both credible and legitimate
He even tried to head off the obvious conflict of interest the broadcaster was in
having been promised boosted funding by Mark Carney’s Liberals
“How are we going to cover ourselves as an election issue?” He continues
There’s an inherent conflict of interest in us covering that
We’ve reported on the CBC before as a corporation
and we’ll treat this story like we would the funding of any other Crown corporation
CBC’s anti-conservative bias existed long before this new funding promise
and would not be solved by his three pillars of “live,” “local,” and “listening.” There’s no evidence CBC has listened and become less anti-conservative
Being live does not address bias if reporters are biased
There’s also no evidence that focusing on local communities will solve the issue of bias either
These communities have been consuming free CBC bias for decades
if they interview someone who gets all their news from CBC
the public broadcaster will simply end up reflecting a bias loop in which they feed a community bias
and a community member reflects their biased coverage back to them
mood dired — laughs and giggles were nowhere to be seen
while raising her fist to Mark Carney hanging in as prime minister and beating Charles Tupper’s record of 68 days
who at one time may have served as a contrarian voice
Kenney did his best to try to explain some of the strategy behind Poilievre’s campaign and inject something positive about the Conservative party
countering the dismissiveness of other panelists
He noted some of Poilievre’s successes: his ability to identify issues that matter to Canadians
growing support among working-class and younger voters that the NDP had forgotten
generally broadening the Conservative base
and Poilievre’s effectiveness as opposition leader
Barton’s response to Kenney was to laugh and point out that Poilievre got rid of the things that helped him
including Justin Trudeau and the carbon tax
When Kenney pointed out that Poilievre “pointedly opposed the Quebec Bill 21 law against religious symbols in Quebec,” he was interrupted by both Chantal Hébert
who ultimately conceded “he says he’s opposed to it,” even if he hasn’t said whether or not he would intervene
What would it take for these pundits to take Poilievre at his word
several pundits chose to mock Conservative MP Jamil Jivani for expressing anger at Ontario PC Premier Doug Ford
calling him a “hype man for the Liberal party,” comments made after Jivani won his seat
but also after it was clear his party lost
and his own campaign manager Kory Teneycke were highly critical of the federal Tories during the campaign
it’s so unfortunate that he’s so vague about his views.” Coyne called Jivani’s comments a “tirade,” accusing the Conservatives of “scabrous negativity.” Hébert called his complaints a “rant.” Raj described Jivani as having “an aggressive tone.” None of them engaged with the substance of his complaints against Ford
The suggestion seemed to imply that conservative Canadians are not capable of accepting election results
tying this suggestion to the refusal of Donald Trump and some Americans to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election
There were also some people who initially refused to believe that Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016
Can we please stop pretending Canada is the United States
is that there was not a hint that he thinks the election result isn’t what it is
and I think it matters these days the person who loses says this result is legitimate.” There’s no evidence this is at all necessary in Canada
it is bringing American concerns into a Canadian election and tying Canadian Conservatives to American Republicans
Why even suggest the refusal to accept results as a possibility
Did Hébert suggest it for NDP leader Jagmeet Singh when he lost his seat
Election night coverage showed that CBC still has not gotten the message that conservatives exist in Canada
making up around as much of the voting population as liberals
and that upholding principles of fair journalism as a Crown media outlet would require including that ideological diversity without gloom when Conservatives do well or laughter when they do not

Victor Gao: I think the United States, in launching such a global trade war or tariff war, is doing the wrong thing. It has not only significantly eroded the living standards and the quality of life of the American people
it has caused a disruption in the stock market
in the bond market and the complete disregard for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of so many countries in the world
Cathy Newman: The problem is, though, that the rest of the world is now scrambling to do deals with the US some of those are quite close to being signed, according to America. So where does that leave China
most people will panic and will be desperate and probably will do what you command or dictate for them to do
whether they really respect your authority or control
Cathy Newman: But the problem is that in this scenario
And so China ends up having more to lose from this trade war
It can’t sustain the loss of 15% of its export market
China is fully prepared to fight to the very end because the world is big enough that the United States is not the totality of the market in the world
So if the United States wants to go in that direction of completely shutting itself out of the China market
there was no United States and we survived
And if the United States wants to bully China
we will deal with the situation without the United States
and we expect to survive for another 5,000 years
I wonder how aggressive China might be in trying to peel away the EU
peel these countries away from their deals with the US
Victor Gao: We do not want to separate other countries from each other
but it is true that EU is talking to China
The voices I picked up here in Beijing is that EU leaders and Chinese leaders are having phone calls
We are talking about the possibility of signing up the comprehensive agreement on investment or even leading towards a free trade agreement between China and EU eventually
Cathy Newman: When you hear Donald Trump say China wants a deal, it just doesn’t know how to go about it. They’re proud people. JD Vance talks about Chinese peasants
What do you make of their conduct in this respect
Victor Gao: If JD Vance thinks that he’s dealing with the peasants in China – and I’m proud to be a descendant of the peasants
most of us are descendants of peasants anyway
we are farmers before – but now we are one of the leading industrialised economies in the world
JD Vance doesn’t know what he’s talking about
I don’t think there will be China-US dialogue unless the United States changes its attitude towards China
and don’t try to impose your prejudice and biased view about China or about the rest of the world
We will not buy that kind of prejudice or discrimination from the United States
Cathy Newman: To hear you talk and to hear Donald Trump talk
it seems very clear that there’s not going to be any deal anytime soon unless someone alters their stance
Doesn’t that then mean global recession and really misery for many people around the world
my concern is that if China and the United States do not take major measures to direct all these tariff war or trade war launched by the United States
President Trump needs to realise that Rome is not built overnight
To talk about millions of manufacturing jobs going back to the United States
Cathy Newman: Do you think the American people will rise up
there will be the midterm elections next year
and whether the American people will vote with their feet
If you follow the American political rhythm
no party has a complete permanent lock on power…
Victor Gao: … and we all need to prepare for changes
We always say we have a plan for the coming 100 years for peace and stability and development

Hours before a special surprise in the chapel loaded with confetti cannons, teammates and beloved residents, Good Samaritan Society – Water Valley administrator Amanda Kerr was trying to keep what was coming a secret
was about to be named the National Ever Forward Employee Champion
I hid from her for two hours,” jokes Blade Ota
Good Samaritan chef supervisor and Meyer’s boyfriend
Ota and Meyer work together in the kitchen
and he admits he’s not good at lying to his significant other of four years
“We kept him in the office and her out of the office,” Kerr adds with a smile
and Meyer later sat down in a packed chapel thinking she was attending a town hall event
That’s when Good Samaritan president and CEO Nate Schema announced Meyer is considered one of the best
“I just fell to my knees and put my head in my knees and was just so shocked
Resident Rick Newman was asked to hand Meyer some flowers and congratulations
“30 seconds before it happened I kind of had a feeling what was going on
The nutrition and food services supervisor
Meyer tends the independent living location’s bistro while serving residents hungry for breakfast or lunch
“She’s important to me,” Newman says regarding Meyer
“She’s made a difference in what I’ve gone through.”
Newman moved in two years ago after his wife was diagnosed with dementia
“That’s something you don’t see in everybody
Ota sees her efforts firsthand every day and notes
“Amber deserves it because she’s a hard worker
She goes above and beyond for a lot of the residents here.”
A mom of two who managed restaurants and served as a cook
Meyer didn’t know what to expect when she was hired at Good Samaritan
It’s turned out to be way more than just a paycheck
I make a difference here and I truly love that
I’ve never had a job before that has allowed me to do that,” Meyer says
the senior living community really comes together around food
is the biggest social event we have here,” Kerr says
“Amber touches each of the residents’ lives that she interacts with just by smiling
by delivering food when they’re sick or just knowing if they’re having a bad day.”
Setting that tone is helping create a culture unlike any other
It’s a culture of loving each other,” Randy Fitzgerald
“It is truly a remarkable community we have here at Water Valley.”
Lou Warner still loves the Good Samaritan apartment she’s made home for eight years overlooking the nearby lake
And when she heads down for her morning coffee
She remembers what you want and how you want it,” Warner says
I’m glad she is because I look for her every morning when I come down.”
Fresh off a workout at the local community center
Don Frevert is popping into the bistro to visit Meyer and pick up some omelets to go
“I’ve only been here nine months but that’s nine months in the Amber fan club,” Frevert says
“it really goes miles and miles how you treat people
and a smile can do phenomenal things for people.”
“I just want to make their experience in everything that they have with us
She’s motivated because of her interest in and care for those she serves
Support from teammates and Good Samaritan leaders also goes a long way
truly valued here at work and I have never in my life
she admits it feels good to know people think highly of her effort and attitude
“I just believe that in life you truly get what you put into the world
EVANSVILLE — The full scale of the financial crimes perpetrated by one highly placed Vanderburgh County judicial employee has emerged in acts referenced — but unnamed — in court papers
A Courier & Press investigation into the facts behind the wire fraud charge to which former Prosecutor's Office Finance Director Regene Newman will plead guilty July 31 found Newman has admitted to more than misappropriating $90,408 from that office
The bulk of that money — more than $60,000 — was spent in unauthorized purchases with a debit card connected to My Goals
a nonprofit for at-risk youth started in 2011 by then-Prosecutor Nick Hermann
The Courier & Press discovered Newman also is pleading guilty to misappropriating $10,725 from Vanderburgh County drug treatment court programs (drug court, therapeutic work release and electronic home detention), whose books she oversaw as business director of Vanderburgh County Community Corrections
Community Corrections had hired her away from the prosecutor's office in 2021
More: Former Vanderburgh County prosecutor's finance director pleads guilty to wire fraud
The treatment court programs were named only as Victim 2 in Newman's plea agreement
which didn't explain how Newman misappropriated the $10,725
too — one that also isn't named in the plea agreement Newman signed with the U.S
Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana in April
according to its articles of incorporation
is to "assist in providing rehabilitative treatment to those addicted to drugs."
FAIR isn't seeking restitution because Newman settled the debt out of court
the supervising judge over Community Corrections
said he commissioned a private audit that identified the misappropriated FAIR funds
He discussed those losses with evident disgust
"We use the FAIR account to help do things for our (treatment court program) participants that we can’t use public money to do — maternity clothing for pregnant participants
incentives for when people are doing well," Trockman said
did not respond to a request to speak about the case
Trockman would not release the private audit of FAIR or disclose how much Newman is believed to have misappropriated from the nonprofit
Attorney's Office confirmed Friday that $125,063 is the amount Newman gained from the wire fraud scheme it charged
but it is pursuing a money judgment and restitution order only for $101,133.55 for two victims
Trockman said FAIR settled with Newman using her accrued termination pay after she was fired from her $74,977-per-year Community Corrections job in March 2023
Vanderburgh County records obtained by public records request indicate Newman
More: Community corrections fires former prosecutor's aide over nonprofit spending
(Newman's settlement payment to FAIR) was more than that — but she paid it," Trockman said
What did Newman spend the money on? Trockman wouldn't say, but he noted Courier & Press reporting in 2023 that bank statements for My Goals showed ATM and bank withdrawals and thousands of dollars in purchases at fast food restaurants
pharmacies and supermarkets and out-of-town shopping sprees
"It was all consistent with what was found and reported through the not-for-profit at the prosecutor’s office (My Goals)," the judge said
Community Corrections provides therapeutic services such as drug and alcohol treatment
a GED program and other services for sentenced defendants
At the time of her firing Newman was in charge of the roughly $3 million program's financial affairs
But Trockman had not known until the Courier & Press told him that Newman was pleading guilty to misappropriating $10,725 from Vanderburgh County drug treatment court programs
He said that was confirmed to him on Wednesday by Assistant U.S
which also didn't explain how Newman misappropriated the $10,725
The losses had been identified in an independent Indiana State Board of Accounts (SBOA) audit that Trockman says the Federal Bureau of Investigation arranged after Community Corrections contacted the FBI with suspicions about Newman
But SBOA "never reported it to me," Trockman said
After talking with SBOA Chief of Staff Jennifer Gauger on Wednesday
he still doesn't know the details of Newman's thefts from treatment court programs
"When I see that State Board of Accounts report
I’ll know and you’ll know when I know," the judge said
and she said it’s confidential until the sentencing."
Attorney Miller also wouldn't shed any light on the matter
The Courier & Press asked Gauger about the audit and got the same answer
"This matter is currently part of an ongoing investigation
so I am not at liberty to provide any updates or information at this time," Gauger said by email
Trockman admitted it's galling that the Superior Court judge supervising Vanderburgh County's treatment court programs wasn't apprised of the results of a state audit of those programs and can't obtain it now
Trockman said the federal prosecutor told him Newman plans on making a significant payment toward restitution before sentencing on July 31
Current Prosecutor Diana Moers, who defeated Hermann in a 2022 Republican primary election
plans to show up at Newman's sentencing hearing in July to make a victim impact statement
Moers took a special interest in cooperating with authorities investigating Newman's crimes even though Newman was long gone when she arrived
The prosecutor's office could have used the money Newman stole for crime prevention and anti-drug programs
"I’m going to push for a harsh sentence," the prosecutor said
Moers prosecuted violations of the Indiana Securities and Loan Broker Acts earlier in her career as a lawyer for the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office
"I feel like a lot of times the amount of money they steal versus the amount of time they get — it doesn’t match up," she said
Maybe it’s worth it.' I just don’t think that that’s right
Trockman doesn't intend to make a victim impact statement
who will sentence Newman in Evansville's federal courthouse
"I intend to write a letter to Judge Young expressing my dismay over Ms
Newman’s actions and the betrayal of her trust," Trockman said
"When something like this happens to you and your trust is betrayed
After Newman's firing Community Corrections consulted then-County Auditor Brian Gerth to establish safeguards to ensure no single employee can have enough unfettered control to commit the same kinds of financial crimes Newman did
"We have a set of new procedures that have two sets of eyes on everything," he said
“It’s just very sad that it even happened.”
there is the prospect that more details about Newman's crimes will be released after she is sentenced
Attorney's Office said a sentencing memo will be posted on public access federal court records a week or two before sentencing
and those typically contain more information
Regene Newman's wearying saga of theft and misplaced trust has no winners
As dust continues to stir on last week’s firing of Hopewell’s city manager and city clerk, the city’s top prosecutor warned in a letter to City Council that the motion to terminate Dr
Concetta Manker may have been made improperly
and the final vote was a 3-3 tie allowing Manker to keep her job
Newman’s opinion is the latest in council’s controversial decisions to oust Manker and City Clerk Brittani Williams without cause
The separate 4-3 votes fell along council’s racial lines and prompted loud charges of racism since the votes to terminate were made by white councilors and did not specify reasons
Robert's 36th rule of order spells out the following about reconsideration motions: "It can be made only on the day the vote to be reconsidered was taken
a legal holiday or a recess not being counted as a day."
The governance code also says the motion "must be made by one who voted with the prevailing side."
but it still must follow the rule's time and member restrictions
anyone on either side can ask for reconsideration
"Councilor Ellis was not qualified to make the Motion to Reconsider,” he stated in his message
“Councilor Ellis left the meeting before the original motion and vote to terminate was made
the matter taken up concerning the city manager was untimely
Manker is still the City Manager because your actions are null and void.”
to offer his opinion about Robert’s Rule of Order
“What I am most concerned about is that while I understand you may be trying to change the course of this great city
I feel that your actions have accomplished nothing more than placing another arrow in Dr
Manker’s quiver to sue the city as well as each of you individually,” Newman’s message concluded
Richmond man faces murder, gun charges in the shooting death of a Petersburg woman in Hopewell
Newman’s letter was the third of a series he has written to council about firing council-appointed employees such as Manker or Williams
The first was prior to the February meeting when Newman recommended that Ellis
Vice Mayor and Ward 7 Councilor Dominic Holloway recuse themselves from motions to fire Manker because of conflict-of-interest issues
because he is a city employee as well as a councilor
and any action could be construed that he was acting as the “boss” of Manker who in turn is the supervisor of all city employees
Joyner and Holloway were recommended to not take part because at the time
Manker had filed official complaints against them
the day before the meeting in which Manker and Williams were fired
Newman warned against the possibility of Ellis making the motion to reconsider because “I feel certain that Councilor Ellis would have a conflict of interest
He asked council to postpone the meeting until he could get a requested opinion from state Attorney General Jason Miyares about Ellis’ issue
he was bound to enforce Virginia’s conflict-of-interest laws
the violation of which is a Class 1 misdemeanor
and could result in Ellis’ removal for malfeasance in office and a $250 fine
violating the conflict-of-interest statutes has severe consequences,” he wrote
and I don’t want anyone to run afoul of the law.”
all councilors who voted to fire Manker and Williams – Ellis
Mayor Johnny Partin Jr and Ward 5 Councilor Susan Daye – have maintained public silence about the decision
Partin told The Progress-Index after the May 1 meeting nothing would be said because the terminations are a protected personnel issue
At that same meeting – after the Black councilors left the dais – council chose Michael Rogers as interim city manager
an employee of the advisory firm Rober Bobb Group
is a former interim city manager in Charlottesville and also worked in Petersburg
No interim was named to fill Williams’ spot
deputy clerk Sade’ Allen will run the office until a replacement is named
In the proposed fiscal year 2026 budget council is deliberating now
the deputy clerk position will be eliminated
Cops: Woman killed Saturday in Hopewell's Thomas Rolfe Court area had 'apparent head trauma'
One of the core issues for the public upheaval over Manker’s and Williams’ firings hinges on the point of “termination without cause.” To terminate without cause means that the employee is being let go for reasons unrelated to their work performance as long as there is no wrongdoing or employee misconduct
Virginia is one of several “work at-will" states where an employer can let an employee go without specifying a reason, and that can also apply to workers in the public sector, according to the state code
any employee who signs a contract with a governing body may have an “out” from the at-will requirement if the contract specifies specific terms of employment
The Progress-Index has requested copies of Manker’s and Williams’ contract through the Virginia Freedom of Information Act
Both Manker and Williams maintain they were never given any formal annual evaluations of their performances by council
Williams said at the May 1 meeting that she has received numerous positive emails from council members complimenting her for the job
I got this office in shape so y’all could bring someone else in?” Williams angrily asked at the meeting

but she did meet a quokka: “They come right up to you
and they’re very cute.”) She’s exhausted
“When I first put out the Knows Nothing record [in 2023]
That’s all I want to do,'” Valazza says
where I feel like my creativity is coming to a halt from all the touring and the traveling
I just feel like my body’s giving up on me a little bit
and so I would like to take a little bit more time to focus on writing.”
Valazza is a songwriter’s songwriter
the kind of lyricist who makes it embarrassing to describe her with such a cliché
she’s carved out a reputation for her sharp pen and even sharper ear
Equally indebted to Laurel Canyon-era Joni Mitchell
and the humanistic freak-folk of the late Michael Hurley
whom she collaborated and toured with toward the end of his life
her sound straddles just about every folk subgenre without truly belonging to one
When she pulls up to the honky-tonk with a pedal steel player in tow
don’t expect a night of strictly country music
Genre fetishism isn’t Valazza’s thing
Penned between Portland and New Orleans in the midst of her protracted move south
it gets at the anxiety and confusion of a life in flux
when self-destructive cycles are still only partway through being dismantled
Valazza sorts through that unsettled feeling with clear-eyed perspicacity
“it’s easier to say than to practice what I know,” as she points out on the lushly arranged “Weight of the Wheel.” She’s good enough to pull one over on us
but too smart to let herself get away with it: “Disguised as poetry
it lands/ But you’re feeling loathsome
If this album was at least partly informed by the chaos of feeling stuck in a perpetual in-between
Valazza knows the next one has to be different — hence her desire to spend a little less time on the road
making From Newman Street a time capsule of a period that’s almost over
I don’t write well moving,” she says
because it’s just been constantly going
Valazza recorded From Newman Street in Portland with her full six-piece touring band
who are also credited as her co-producers and co-arrangers
you can listen to the album and read our track-by-track interview
From Newman Street by Kassi Valazza
You covered “Wildegeeses” by Michael Hurley at the end of the last album
you’ve got the lyric about “the wild honking of the sulking winter geese.” Was that an intentional echo
that was definitely my Michael Hurley line
That was me putting a little Hurley in there
But there’s not a whole lot of meaning to it
I just wanted to sprinkle a little Hurley in there
You got to know him pretty well in his final years
What will you remember most about having a creative collaboration with him
I think I have like a bad habit of taking things so seriously
it’s a good lesson to know it’s okay to be goofy and to just play
“Better Highways” is about the impact that even our most fleeting relationships have on us
Is he on your mind at all when you think back about that song now
Some songs aren’t even about one specific person
And that’s what makes art so special
is it can be reflective of whoever you’re around
or whatever you’re going through in that moment
And I think “Better Highways” is an example of that
Are there field recordings of birdsong on here
Or is that all being created with instruments
Was that something you figured out on the day
VALAZZA: I think what happened was I was going on tour to the UK for the first time
and I have a trio of Tobias [Berblinger] and Erik [Clampitt]
and he just started adding these little sounds
“That sounds like a bird!” And he just kept doing it
What exactly was going on around you in Portland that inspired you to write it
VALAZZA: I don’t know if it was just
but at that time it felt like it was as heavy as it could be
And a lot of people in our community were drinking a lot
and I was hiding in my basement while all these people I loved and knew were out
I felt like I was watching the world move really fast from a window or something
When you’re dealing with a subject that inherently blunt and raw
is it challenging to transform that into a song
I think I don’t know how to answer that
This song references your friend, the visual artist Boramie Sao. You did a beautiful shoot with one of her paintings in the desert for the single release
Let’s start there: What role did she play in inspiring “Shadow Of Lately”
And she moved from Portland when I was still living there
and that was really a hard transformation for me
by myself.” It just seemed like a big thing at the time
realizing that I wasn’t quite happy where I was
Do I go to Nashville?” There was just a long period where I was like
“I don’t know where I’m supposed to go.” But I’m really happy that Bo has found her space
as you were putting those kinds of feelings into this song
that your time in Portland was just about up
I think that’s when I was most creative
because I think I knew that a change needed to happen
I’m gonna make the change.” But for the first time in my life
I’m just gonna think about what I really want.” And while I was doing that
and I think it really helped in that process
I love the use of Mellotron and pedal steel together here
I think those two things should be together way more often
What do you remember about figuring out the arrangement for the song
I feel like he’s just so good at the padding
And then Erik just came in with that lick on the pedal steel
It just felt like everything kind of fell into place with this song when we were working on it
so I couldn’t help but hear a little bit of “Who Knows Where The Time Goes?” in the lyric to this one
I don’t know if that was subconscious
A lot of times when I write it’s just
And [“Where does the time go?] just came out
It’s always hard when it’s the first line of the song
VALAZZA: [Laughs] You’re not the first person to say that
“I feel like an old woman these days,” four times
and that feels like a kind of an anchor line for the song
What was making you feel that way at the time
and I felt like maybe I wasn’t quite fitting in
I’m not an outwardly outgoing person
I think it was hard adjusting to New Orleans
because it is a very loud and exciting place
and I felt like I was kind of like this grumpy old woman
because there were periods of my life where I wasn’t drinking
“I can’t keep up with everybody
and I don’t want to keep up with everybody.” And trying to be accepting of that and holding space for yourself while you’re going through that
but your voice doesn’t necessarily lock you into that world
I think I get paired with a lot of honky-tonk stuff at a lot of venues and a lot of shows
just because country is so big in the States right now
Maybe in general I feel like people don’t really know where to put me
So because I wore a cowboy hat on my first album
“Just put it over there with all the other honky-tonk people.” Which is fine
I’m friends with a lot of those people
But it doesn’t always feel like I have a home
I feel like people in the UK kind of get it a little bit more
I don’t think it’s a bad thing
Maybe it’s better to stand out than it is to fit in
There’s been a few disappointed people
“Where’s your fucking cowboy hat?!”
in Australia I had somebody come up and be like
“You’re not wearing your cowboy hat.”
“I haven’t worn a cowboy hat in 15 years.”
You said that this took 13 tries to get right
What was so tough to crack about this song
VALAZZA: I think person that I said that to in an interview misunderstood what I was saying
VALAZZA: I think what I meant was about the subject matter
It took me 13 times to get this relationship right
I was like trying so hard to make a relationship work that wasn’t working
It’s not working.” And I think she took that literally as like
I just meant the experience of what I was going through at the time
It was one of those songs that you just write in a day
and the little lilting guitar figures on this make it jump out right away
Did you know that this was going to be a more uptempo song right when you thought of it
VALAZZA: I was listening to a lot of Paul Simon
And I don’t write a lot of upbeat songs
so I really wanted to try something different
and create a different feeling than I usually do
The lyrics have this anxious energy to them
and the groove of the song feels like it mirrors that energy
Was that the feeling you were trying to convey
I guess I wasn’t thinking about it as a whole
“I want it to sound like this.”
Do you feel like it is a song that has an anxious or nervous core to it
What emotions were going through your mind as this one was coming to you
VALAZZA: I’ve never written a song that sounds so much like me
I feel like that song really does represent how I sound on a day-to-day basis
and then being worried about not having money
because you don’t make any money as a musician these days…So many things just felt like they were piling up
And I just found a way to write it all down
Are you at a different place with the emotions of the song when you hear it now
You’ve been in New Orleans for a while
And I think that’s what makes adjusting so hard
I’m actually really proud of those lyrics
Do you feel locked into sticking it out in New Orleans
even though you’re not there very much
me and my boyfriend are gonna move to Nashville in November
You said that this one started as a poem and became a song
Do feelings just sort of subconsciously manifest as poetry for you
and you have to run to the notebook and get it down
Or do you have to make a conscious point of sitting down to write
VALAZZA: Usually I have to make a conscious point
There’s been a few times where a line will happen
What’s the transformation look like for you
VALAZZA: I think that’s always different
and there’s more time that gets put into it
Sometimes I’ll have a skeleton of a song
and I’ll listen to it on my voice notes over and over again
and I’ll try to find different words or different ways to say what I’m trying to say
It’s usually a much longer process these days
Does a melody ever appear alongside the words
“Time Is Round” was one of those where it just kind of all came out
What is the Market Street that you’re talking about on the song
VALAZZA: I think I was talking about San Francisco
because I had just played in San Francisco
and I think that was just running through my head
But I don’t know if it’s necessarily about San Francisco
I think it’s just a song about being in a place that used to feel comfortable
and really bright vocal harmonies — the ooh-ooh parts
What made this song feel like it warranted that kind of treatment
VALAZZA: I really liked the melody where the oohs were in
and I didn’t want to add lyrics to it
the only way that’s gonna work is if I really do something with those oohs.” So I had Camille [Weatherford] and CJ [Reece-Kaigler] from the Lostines sing on them
I’m curious how this song ended up being track 9
You’ve been playing it live for a while
You’d think it would at least be on side A
What was the process that led to it being way down here
VALAZZA: I had a couple of band members that were like
“It needs to be on side A!” But I think you need to space it out
I love “Weight Of The Wheel,” and I do think it’s one of the better songs
But I think you can’t put all the good ones on side A
And if they don’t listen to the whole record
so it really is just a matter of what sounds best where and what makes sense
“Put it on side A because more people will hear it.”
It also feels like a thesis statement for the album
it feels like you’re capturing a lot of the feelings that are at the core of this record
This might be the first song that I wrote for this record
and I think everything just kind of came after that
and the cycles that we struggle to break—how did that come to you
trying to make something work that’s not gonna work
I went through a few different relationships in Portland
and I was getting mad at myself without realizing that sometimes you just have to break it and walk away
What went into the decision to do it that way
VALAZZA: I think it’s good to have dynamics on records
and I just think it sounded best like that
It was a very solitary moment when I wrote it
I was missing a friend of mine that wasn’t there
and I think it just felt like a very private
Why did this feel like the right name for this collection of songs
VALAZZA: I think I was feeling a lot of heavy
that came from learning how to do all these things
which is how I look at that whole experience

The Chicago Bears continued to add to the offensive trenches with the sixth-round selection of Michigan State guard Luke Newman with the 195th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft
Chicago also drafted offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo late in the second round
Newman spent four seasons at left tackle for Holy Cross (a two-time All American) before transferring to Michigan State
where he started 12 games at left guard in 2024
He started every game in the past four years between Holy Cross and Michigan State
Newman brings versatility across the offensive line
as well as key depth to Chicago's offensive line
Here's what some expert draft analysts had to say about Newman during the pre- and post-draft process and what Bears fans can expect to see:
Dane Brugler, The Athletic"Luke Newman grew up in Bloomfield Hills
he moved to left guard and started every game there in 2024
He has the upper-body torque to dump rushers but doesn’t show the same power as a drive blocker to displace in the run game
demeanor and durability should give him a chance to stand out in an NFL training camp."
Holes in his technique will be exploited by NFL talent and he might not have enough runway to get them corrected with more coaching."
"A four-year starter over the course of his collegiate career
Newman started from 2021 to 2023 at Holy Cross
He was a three-time first-team All-Patriot League player and a two-time FCS All-American
Upon his transfer to Michigan State for the 2024 season
and he is expected to remain along the interior in the NFL
He didn’t allow a single sack in pass protection for the Spartans
and he finished as an All-Big Ten honorable mention
even if his mobility on tape doesn’t match the testing at his Pro Day
but there’s never such thing as too much offensive line depth."

leaving the Liberals with a minority government
This has led to calls — from both conservatives and progressives — for Pierre Poilievre to step down as Conservative party leader
overlook the success of several of Poilievre’s policies — many of which were co-opted by the Liberals in order to win — and severely underestimate the Liberals’ incumbent advantage in the face of an unforeseeable natural disaster that plagued an otherwise normal Canadian election campaign — U.S
what likely happened to that other 3.7 per cent of the vote
The failure of the Conservatives to form government is a product of a perfect storm — a turn cloak Liberal government switching from publicly mocking Poilievre’s policies to adopting them wholesale without acknowledging from whence they came
whose tariff threats loomed large in the backdrop of this election
and whose trolling memes were such an offense to Canadian sensibilities that at least some of us appeared to forget why we wanted to vote the Liberals out in the first place
It turns out one party’s nightmare is another’s winning lottery ticket
None of this suggests that Poilievre should step down as party leader — quite the opposite — it suggests that he understands what’s important to Canadians so well that his opposition has to copy his ideas
suggesting that “enough of the electorate recoiled from a man who was unable to make the transition from polemicist to statesman,” and doubted his ability to lead in “one in the most critical moment in Canada’s modern history.”
It’s also arguable that it was Liberal Leader Mark Carney who ran a highly polemical campaign against Poilievre
Carney pulled out all the stops to link Poilievre
standing up for Canada and is taking focused action to build a better economy” or one that promotes “want division and Americanism.” He continued
This was in response to Alberta’s Danielle Smith suggesting that although there would be many disagreements
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre would be “very much in sync with … the new direction in America” and that the two countries would “have a great relationship,” pointing to issues they’d have in common: “If we do have Pierre as our prime minister
then I think there’s a number of things that we could do together
he believes that we need to have low taxes
doesn’t believe in any of the woke stuff that we’ve seen taking over our politics for the last five years.”
it would be just horrible if a Canadian Conservative prime minister had many disagreements on some things with U.S
Isn’t that exactly what Canadians expect Carney will be doing
Despite the fact it was Smith who made these claims
He was caught flat-footed by a party that abandoned even one of their own most beloved policies
and those who unfairly accused him of being like Trump
and Conservatives had been in power for ten years when Trump’s threats began
would have benefitted from incumbency and the rally-round-the flag effect that the Liberals enjoyed
ten years under the Conservatives instead may have resulted in a stronger energy industry in Canada which we could have used to support our neighbours in Europe when they needed our help replacing energy from Russia
This suggests that in these and other Ontario ridings that flipped
Mark Carney wasn’t enough like Pierre Poilievre
It seems strange to suggest that Pierre Poilievre should step down as leader when his policies actually worked for the Liberals and would have likely secured them a majority if only they’d taken more of them on
I see no evidence that any non-incumbent leader would have been able to withstand the Trump chaos factor which the Liberals leaned into
Poilievre should proudly stay on as party leader and fight the Liberals tooth and nail on their blatant hypocrisy
He should just do it with the confidence and subdued tone of Canada’s next prime minister

Last year, Luke Newman attended a draft party for former Holy Cross teammate C.J
who was selected by the Chiefs in the seventh round
it was Newman's turn to experience the life-changing event—when the Michigan State offensive lineman was chosen by the Bears in the sixth round
"It was a very unique and special moment ..
I'm almost at a loss of words for a moment quite like this," Newman said
I've been to a draft party with a friend of mine last year and saw him go through it
to be blessed to have an opportunity and a franchise that believes in your abilities and is willing to have you grow and develop as a person and player in your building
"A lot of people in that office have invested a lot in me

Newman started at left tackle from 2021-23 at Holy Cross
where he was a two-time FCS All-American and three-time All-Patriot League first team selection
He transferred to Michigan State in 2024 and started all 12 games at left guard last year

Newman landed on the Bears' radar after arriving at Michigan State
He was not invited to the NFL Combine but improved his draft stock at the East-West Shrine Bowl by showing that he could excel at both guard and center

Newman proved at the Shrine Bowl that he possesses the initial quickness to play center
some of the traits are better suited for one [position] or the other," Ackley said
"He's a guy that played tackle his whole career
you see he can anchor and handle big bodies
He played some NFL guys there and then you're always projecting the center thing
which on our end can be a little bit scary until you've seen him actually do it
you see him handle the calls they give him."
Newman continued to impress at his Pro Day and during a visit to Halas Hall

While Y&R does not comment on the status of its actors, sources tell Soap Opera Digest that the show has no immediate plans to recast the pivotal role of Nick and Phyllis’s headstrong daughter, which Lanier assumed after the previous Summer, Hunter King
vacated the role; she had played the part on and off since 2012
Summer was born on screen in 2006 and had been played by multiple child actresses beginning that year: twins Elara and Rhea Kerwin
In her first interview with Digest back in 2022
Lanier recounted how she had come to land the role of Summer
“I was living in New York when my manager told me about the opportunity,” she noted
Joshua Morrow (Nick) and leading man Michael Mealor (Kyle) during the casting process
“First I read with Joshua and he couldn’t have been nicer,” she enthused
“He’s a super-relaxed guy and really funny
So he broke the ice right away and made me feel comfortable
And I also auditioned with Michael and he was so sweet and giving
He helped make the scene we were doing together much easier for me.”
Lanier so impressed Y&R higher-ups that they quickly made up their mind to hire her
“They called just a few hours later,” Lanier marveled
I was up against other women and when I left
‘That was fun,’ so I put it out of my mind
Lanier had to move across the country in short order to begin filming
“It was less than two weeks,” the actress shared of her relocation to California
It definitely was a whirlwind and a crazy time but luckily
In an interview with Digest last year
Lanier — who earned a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2024 for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work on the show — discussed the evolution of Summer in the two years she had spent playing the character
“I feel so good about it,” she said of her handle on the character
I just feel so lucky to be on the show and to work with all these awesome people and we have so much fun.”
Lanier was optimistic that the romantic split of Kyle and Summer would open up promising new storyline avenues for the character
“I think it’s been really good for both of our characters
Check out Summer’s life in pictures here
What is your reaction to the news of Lanier’s exit — and do you think Y&R should recast Summer

the Eagles offense finally kicked into gear for the first time in the series

"I knew I was due for a hit," Lantigua said
I've been hitting balls hard but they just weren't falling
I didn't really put any pressure on myself and I knew what was coming
Lantigua's double to right-center — "I thought it was gone

He advanced to third on the throw to the plate and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Blair

"We just knew we were better than that," Graffeo said

ExpandNewman right fielder Ashton Miner fires home to prevent a Sherrard run from scoring on Friday
STERLING – In a battle between the two division leaders in the Three Rivers Conference
the Newman Comets came through in the clutch Friday against Sherrard
Two-out hits in three straight innings drove in six runs as the Comets won the crossover matchup of undefeated TRAC teams 10-3
“It’s the most important time in the game; when there’s two outs and you’ve got guys in scoring position
that’s when the pressure’s on,” Newman’s Garet Wolfe said
“It takes more than just putting the ball in play; you’ve really got to drive the ball to score runs in that situation
8 hitter Jameson Hanlon had an RBI double in the second inning and started the two-out scoring surge with a two-run single in the third – when it looked Sherrard starter Eli Matson was going to escape a bases-loaded jam unscathed after back-to-back strikeouts
the Comets (18-3) took a 3-1 lead as Chase Decker and Daniel Kelly crossed the plate
“The approach is just get the barrel to the ball
so I just changed my approach as much as possible and really just tried to help the team,” Hanlon said
“It’s important to know that every guy in the lineup can step up in big moments
We win games because we’ve got guys like that up and down the lineup.”
“Those were some of the biggest hits in the game
and it got us going and we fed off of that,” Wolfe said
“When you’ve got guys down there [in the lineup] that can really drive the ball and flip it back to the top [of the order]
Newman's Jameson Hanlon loads up before smacking an RBI double against Sherrard on Friday
then Wolfe followed with a single to drive in Kelly for a 5-1 lead
two-run single from Garrett Woodward in the top of the fifth – he also had an RBI fielder’s choice in the first inning – to cut the deficit to 5-3
But Newman answered in a big way in the bottom of the fifth
and Ashton Miner smoked a double off the bottom of the fence in left-center field
clearing the bases on a 1-2 pitch to stretch the lead to 8-3
that two-strike approach; shortening up [our swing] and doing our job is really what’s key,” Miner said
and when you’ve got guys in front of you that work really hard to get on base
it’s your job to help them out and get them in
“I think we’re good top-to-bottom in our lineup
and not every day does everyone have their best
But we’re here for each other every single game
and whoever needs to step up is going to do it.”
Kelly was hit by a pitch and Wolfe followed a double-steal with a single to right to make it 10-3 Comets
Newman's Garet Wolfe dives back in at first base on a pickoff attempt against Sherrard on Friday
Garret Matznick relieved Newman starter Michael Morse in the sixth and pitched around a two-out single
Liam Nicklaus pitched a perfect seventh inning
notching three strikeouts at the top of the Tigers’ lineup to finish off the win
Morse allowed three runs (two earned) and three hits over five innings
Wolfe went 3-for-3 and reached base four times
Miner and Kelly each reached base three times
“I think that’s one of those games where it might not feel your way at the start
After Sherrard’s first four batters reached base to start the game
Newman ended the first inning with a double play as Miner doubled off a Tigers baserunner at first on a flyout to right
Sherrard managed just three baserunners over the next three innings as the Comets took control
We just couldn’t put them away,” Sherrard coach Nick Basala said
and we just couldn’t make plays when we needed to.”

From “Day in the Life of a Stanford Student” vlogs to room tours to college decision reaction videos
many students craft a creative online persona to go along with their in-person identity
content creation can be a lonely business; each step of scripting
filming and editing is usually a solo endeavor
Feeling the lack of community in their work
content creators Tyler Newman ’25 and Jenny Duan ’26 formed the Next Creator Collective in December 2023 to establish a community for content creators on campus
The Next Creator Collective holds weekly creator hours on campus for student creators to come together and work on content
Duan said these hours designated for content creation are “a space for people to workshop and hold themselves accountable.”
YouTube and TikTok also shared about the future of the creator economy space
Brighton Brown ’26 was the design lead for the conference and helped create promotional materials and slides
who is not part of the Next Creator Collective
realize the passion that people poured into content creation
and so I thought it was really cool to see how [content creation] is really a job for a lot of people,” she said.
Brown also sees an interplay between design and content creation
content creators don’t just focus on graphic design
but also on how their content speaks to their audiences
but especially in content creation,” she said
“It’s not just the looks of your graphics
it’s how you design your content and how you want to address your audience
and so it’s kind of cool to see how intentional people are about addressing [their] audience.”
Newman told The Daily that many conference attendees formed friendships that led to dinner and beach trips afterward
and one attendee canceled their flight to stay an extra day.
“The biggest takeaway from the weekend was that people
feel lonely in this industry,” Newman said
“But I think an even bigger takeaway was that even though a lot of people do feel lonely
and it can be strong and lasting as well.”
Stanford is also a unique place to be a content creator
there’s a strong demand for Stanford-specific content from people curious about life as a student
but the Stanford environment tends to devalue the work of content creators
“There’s often a lot of taboo around content creation especially at a university like Stanford
where subjects [that are] more tech-related may be more valued,” Newman said
“If people see people with cameras out and recording themselves
‘Why are you doing content when you’re at Stanford?’”
Newman believes that content creation is equally as valid as other forms of creative expression like art or dance
and pushes for more students to recognize the discipline and hard work of content creators
Duan believes content creation is more important than ever with the advent of artificial intelligence
in which content highlights a creator’s personality
can be more appealing than statistics or data in differentiating one from the crowd
It’s a really good way to establish credibility online
especially in a world where more and more people are turning towards the digital space for verification
connection and business opportunities,” she said
Duan and Newman emphasize that Next Creator Collective seeks to act as a community space for current and aspiring creators
both see content creation becoming more influential and mainstream at Stanford
“Being aware of and being receptive to new changes in terms of people’s use of technology — content creation being one of them — is really important
so that people don’t miss the wave of

Summer hasn’t mentioned leaving Genoa City
She was determined to make her co-parenting relationship with Kyle work
Summer made it obvious that she was not a fan of Claire
She also felt uncomfortable having Harrison (Redding Munsell) around Audra (Zuleyka Silver)
Unfortunately, she couldn’t catch Kyle’s eye, as she had planned. So, she will probably return to Italy, where she had a successful career. This also makes us wonder what will happen to Phyllis. Since her life is crumbling

Lanier has played Summer Newman on the popular soap opera since 2022 when she took over the role from Hunter King
Cross-country travels with a young folk artist searching for stable ground
a meditative country-tinged ballad from her third album
with a stark realisation: “I’ve made up my mind

sharp lilt that brings to mind Joan Baez or Carolyn Hester or other folk singers from the ’60s and ’70s
with a gentle vibrato and a gift for windswept phrasing
She sings like the breeze is scattering her syllables like leaves
“Roll On” is a break-up song – with a lover perhaps
but more likely with a city – but she instills the song not with resentment or sadness
but a precarious excitement for a new beginning
From Newman Street is an album full of chapters closing and new ones opening
created by a singer-songwriter who embellishes her folky observations with psychedelic flourishes and knowing nods to the past
Valazza wrote a little more than half of these new songs in a small basement apartment in Portland
working in seclusion before joining her trusted touring band to record at a local studio
She’s been a fixture in that city’s folk scene for a decade
gradually finding her voice and refining her sound
sounds like Patsy Cline sitting in with The International Submarine Band: a vivid combination of twangy torch vocals and feral psych guitars
That album heralded a wave of young Pacific Northwest country artists
but cosmic country was a starting point rather than a destination
and she drifted towards a stately strain of folk rock on her 2022 EP “Highway Sounds” and her 2023 sophomore album Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing
The latter paired her with the Portland rabble-rousers TK & The Holy Know-Nothings
who certainly roused some rabble on her songs and exposed a live wire in her vocals
was her mostly solo reimagining of Michael Hurley’s “Wildegeeses”
which she sang like she was missing some remote piece of land very dearly
depression and social anxiety that was very isolating even in a city full of friends and fans
Hoping a change of scenery might alleviate those concerns
in early 2024 she returned from a long tour and immediately packed up her guitars and records and headed east
but she overshot and ended up in New Orleans
She quickly learned she couldn’t outrun her demons
but new surroundings inspired new songs as well as new perspectives on old songs
Valazza took this second batch to Portland and finished the album
although there’s no Side One/Two split between her Oregon songs and her Louisiana songs
she wisely mixes them together to reflect a certain kind of wanderlust that has always motivated her music but feels more acute and certainly more conflicted on From Newman Street
These songs are perched somewhere between home and away: the warmth of her bed and the lure of the larger world
the clash faced by any musician who makes her living playing songs in different cities every night
With its gently percolating percussion and nimble bassline
“Your Heart’s A Tin Box” is a touring lament that’s disarmingly matter-of-fact in its misgivings: “Two months of selling out most of the shows/ I’d sure like to see where all that money goes”
before building to a moment of stark self-reckoning
where she hopes “they like the way you sing”
She ends the songwith a chorus of “you think too much”
which sounds like the punchline to a grim joke
She addresses most of these songs to “you”
as though each song is a pep talk or a warning addressed to Valazza’s future self
many of whom have been playing long before Valazza even arrived in the city
provide breezy accompaniment to her breezy melodies
instilling songs like “Your Heart’s A Tin Box” and “Market Street Savior” with the motion of travel
Erik Clampitt’s pedal steel traces the line of the horizon in the distance
while the rhythm section of drummer Ned Folkerth and bassist Sydney Nash count off the highway lines one by one
Favouring arrangements that highlight one instrument – the muted Byrdsy guitar theme on “Market Street Savior”
the billowy organ blowing through “Small Things”
but most of all Valazza’s deft guitar picking – they never crowd her songs
but these songs all sound like they’re meant to be heard while staring out the car window during a long road trip
In its sense of motion and its travelogue sensibility
the album sounds like a millennial update to Hejira
Joni Mitchell’s mid-’70s document of her local travels along American highways
Hejira is full of dalliances and encounters
not least because she’s so strenuous in her self-interrogation
She also peppers her lyrics with references to geographical landmarks: not just Newman Street but St John’s Park on “Shadow Of Lately” and Market Street on “Market Street Savior”
or perhaps just a means of getting out of her own head
If there’s one landmark she names most often
This is the place where she can retreat into solitude
“All things look the same from the pillow on my bed”
which has a bit of the folk-rock elegance of The Band
I’m far away/ There’s a dizzy dancing in my head”
“It’s so nice to have a bed and watch the trees grow”
That song begins with a hallucinogenic intro before fading into a quiet arrangement that foregrounds Valazza’s voice and guitar
her thumb picking out a pendulum on the low strings
The album concludes not far from where it starts
an idle reminiscence while she washes the dishes
“How is the weather on the open sea?/ Now I sit here all alone
boldest and most vivid expression of emotional restlessness
but it’s also a search for stable ground and a nice view – some place or person or mood that feels like home

Luke Newman turned a one-year homecoming with Michigan State football into his ultimate goal: Getting drafted into the NFL
The offensive lineman from Bloomfield Hills was selected by the Chicago Bears in Round 6 of the 2025 NFL Draft with the No
"I was actually walking down the stairs as I got the call from Chicago," Newman said from his family's home in the Detroit area
"You could kind of tell the room quieted up pretty quickly after that
It's a very unique and special moment that I really have the gratitude to say that — I'm almost at a loss of words for a moment quite like this
I've been to a draft party of a friend of mine last year and see him go through it
But to actually experience and be blessed to have an opportunity in a franchise that believes in your abilities and is willing to help you grow and develop in a person and player in their building
HOPE FROM HOPE: DE Jack Lamancusa transfers to Michigan State football with unique backstory
Newman spent four years playing at the Football Championship Subdivision level, twice being named All-American. The Brother Rice High grad had only two FCS offers, picking Holy Cross over Lafayette
He was a first-team All-American in 2022 and a second-team All-American in 2023
starting at left tackle his last 37 games with the Crusaders
After entering the portal and considering testing the NFL draft waters
312-pound Newman instead decided to move up a level and join Jonathan Smith and offensive line coach Jim Michalczik in their first year at MSU
finishing his degree in economics at Holy Cross before arriving in the summer
Newman earned All-Big Ten honorable mention from both the coaches and media after starting all 12 games at left guard. He led the Spartans with 739 offensive snaps
playing the entire game eight times and finishing the season graded as the No
9 offensive guard in the Big Ten according to Pro Football Focus
That's the place that gave me my first shot and let me get my foot int he door in college football and let me grow and succeed as a person and a player," said Newman
I wanted a chance to showcase more of my abilities at different positions and also take a step up and play against some of the best in the country
something bout Michigan State felt like literal home for me
even it being an hour away — which was awesome
Newman went to the Bears and new coach Ben Johnson
one pick before Detroit selected in the sixth round
"I was grateful enough to come down to Chicago on a visit and meet with coach Johnson and his staff
He's just the ultimate competitor and someone you would really hope is your coach
I'm just really excited to play for that guy
and I think he'll carry that over big-time in Chicago."
It is the second straight year MSU had an offensive lineman drafted. Center Nick Samac was taken in the seventh round by the Ravens in 2024
That means a Spartan has been picked in 84 of the 85 NFL drafts
