of May is International Workers Day a holiday commemorating the working class and the gains of the labor movement this day is officially a federal holiday known as Loyalty Day — and Newport is one of the few cities that celebrates it Newport’s long-standing annual event on Saturday features a parade a royal court and the blessing of the coastal city’s fishing fleet The origins of Newport’s Loyalty Days can be traced to 1938 and the town’s first Newport Crab Festival Sachiko Otsuki, curator for the Lincoln County Historical Society, said that early event drew thousands of people to Newport the first weekend in May with the promise of free Dungeness crab. An exhibit at the historical society’s Pacific Maritime Heritage Center includes the 1941 proclamation for the fourth annual Crab Festival in which Mayor Andrew Naterlin instructed the town’s citizens to “give recognition of his majesty Otsuki said the festival was an effort to stimulate the local economy at a time when crab prices were low The Crab Festival was paused during World War II but Otsuki it was replaced by a modest Loyalty Day celebration in 1953 An organized parade for the Loyalty Days & Sea Fair Festival began in 1957 The concept of a Loyalty Day gained popularity throughout the U.S during the Cold War era of the late 1940s and early 1950s It was a patriotic call for Americans to counter Russia’s May Day Portland held its first Loyalty Day parade in 1949 Douglas McKay designated May 1 as a statewide Loyalty Day holiday President Dwight Eisenhower declared the first Loyalty Day on May 1, 1955 with subsequent presidents issuing Loyalty Day proclamations every year “Through abolition, the Civil War, women’s suffrage, the Great Depression, World Wars, and the Civil Rights Movement, the idea of America animated our many movements and gave us hope for a better future,” read President Joe Biden’s proclamation from 2024. “Today that light — that promise — still shines brightly as we build an America that is more prosperous This year’s proclamation has not yet been issued And while most cities’ events died out as the Cold War thawed This weekend’s is the 68th celebration organized the Newport event off and on for about 20 years “In those days it was quite big,” she said and the United States felt that we needed to have something to combat that.” Navy ships would arrive in Newport from other cities for the event cities still hold Loyalty Day celebrations — an online search found just seven other events still happening in 2025 has an older Loyalty Days parade — that event began in 1950 “We are lucky that we do have people that are still wanting that old tradition of having this parade,” McAdams said This year, Newport’s Loyalty Days kicks off with a veteran’s lunch at noon Friday, May 2 at the Newport 60+ Activity Center. Then, the new queen of the Loyalty Days Royalty Court will be crowned during an event at 7 p.m Highway 101 is shut down for the parade starting at 11 a.m participants in the Loyalty Days Fun Run can race the one-mile length of the parade route starting at the intersection of Highway 101 and 20th Street North we had pouring down rain and we had 92 entries out of 97 to show up,” said Mary Buck president of the Loyalty Days organizing committee the 234th Army Band will give a free concert at 2 p.m A full list of Loyalty Days events can be found on the group’s Facebook page Today, the festival is less about fighting communism and more a show of support for local veterans and military members. Both McAdams and Buck said Newport’s status as a “Coast Guard City” is part of why Loyalty Days remains popular “We’re not stating that people can’t believe what they want to believe,” Buck said “It’s just a way to show the military population that we still honor them.” — Samantha Swindler covers features for The Oregonian/OregonLive and Here is Oregon. National Registrar of Historic Places and will continue to be open to the public Families who live less than a mile from Endview say they don't want major construction making bad traffic worse "When you leave in the morning to go to work you sit there at that corner for 5 minutes If you had 600 more units it's going to be even worse" Skipworth added "I think that it's going to be troublesome it's going to be even more so" said Keith Hoff The city is doing a series of traffic impact analysis studies Some recommendations include turn lanes on Jefferson avenue and Yorktown road and an additional site entrance on Crafford road "There's always some pain but I think the long term goal will be to ensure that the transportation aspect of it actually works" said Flora Developers say the project will take between seven to 10 years to complete Let’s make the summer of 2025 one for the record books This is the time of year that makes or breaks our hospitality community those registers are ringing and our many visitors will leave us with happy memories it’s a good time to step back and take a look at what we’re up against the hospitality industry has its share of strengths and weaknesses that will affect how the summer will go It also faces new opportunities and threats that will further shape how we will do business in the months ahead Being aware of all those factors gives insight into what’s happening behind the scenes The summer may be the season for Aquidneck Islandhospitality but it doesn’t always mean it's an easy journey When you look at the strengths of the hospitality community The hospitality industry is one of the biggest employers on the Island and those valued workers are the ones who help make our restaurants They are dedicated to making sure every visitor gets great food They are also the ones getting the bread in the oven before the sun rises and cleaning the mess after the doors are closed Then they wake up the next day to do it all again You can’t have a successful food community without having a workforce that is dedicated to providing the best and that’s what you’ll find on Aquidneck Island you are going to get a tasty meal in surroundings that are uniquely Aquidneck Island Part of what makes our home a destination spot for travelers is our abundance of spots for truly great dining and that’s good for business we should see an increase of Russell Family fans coming to get a glimpse of an era that only the Newport Mansions can reflect a wharf with sightseeing boats ready to launch there is always a good reason to come to Aquidneck Island While we gear up and get ready for the season we should remain aware of some of the outside factors that are going to affect our industry in a not-so-positive way Weather is always a consideration when looking at our business as the past month of rainy weekends and unusually cold weather can attest the Farmers’ Almanac is predicting a summer of normal rain but particularly warm temperatures That could be good news for the hospitality community on an Island where people go to escape the heat (and good news for HVAC engineers Another challenge of our industry is the high cost of living on Aquidneck Island With less affordable places to live on the Island reliable employees is becoming an obstacle to anyone staffing their business for the summer dealing with a commute over bridges and through tolls makes it hard especially if there are other opportunities more local to them having to recruit candidates willing to make that commute is a challenge to anyone staffing up When it comes to staffing, our industry needs to stay vigilant to ICE activity and immigration policies Our business has relied heavily on the hard work of immigrants and workers on temporary visas to help meet the need for help during our busy season the political temperature around the issue is dangerous for that community with real fears of detainment or deportation the pool of available workers from foreign countries is narrowing and that means a challenge to how we properly staff our businesses for a successful summer while we haven’t seen the full effect just yet the blanket tariffs that have been enacted are going to affect prices on our shelves and our menus Most economists are saying we are on our way to a recession and that’s going to be bad for business and travel Tourism to the United States is already declining and if prices continue to rise it’s going to make things more difficult for the people who live paycheck to paycheck and that includes a lot of people in hospitality Brace yourselves: it’s going to be a long summer but the hospitality industry on Aquidneck Island is ready for it all To all those tying up their aprons and sharpening their knives Go scream in the walk-in cooler if you have to Let’s make some people happy this summer (and make ourselves a little cheese in the process) Dan Lederer is a Middletown resident with 30 years experience in the food The trio are primarily known for their previous ownership of another Broadway restaurant, Fifth Element which they purchased in 2021 and sold in October 2024 After purchasing the Salvation Cafe building in September 2024 the group signed a lease agreement to rent out the first-floor restaurant space to Pivotal Brewing in January 2025 and nabbed approval from the Zoning Board to convert the residential spaces upstairs into guest houses the following February locally sourced vibe they honed in Bristol to Broadway “We have this amazing 8,000 square foot space here in Bristol,” Nicholson said We're taking that experience down to our second location in Newport and you're going to see a lot of the same things and a lot of the same experience that you get here down in Newport on Broadway.” There's a new French restaurant in Newport It's been an interesting journey to get to 505 Thames St., home for nearly 30 years to Bouchard Restaurant speaking for the owners that include her husband Ratoi has been employed for more than a decade at Bouchard and recently married Hoffer They've been delighting diners since they opened TSK Hoffer and Tyler Burnley met working at the kitchen at Laurent Tourondel's BLT Prime in New York City six years earlier They moved to Newport to start their own restaurant They started Mission Burger in 2013 in Newport They also operate a kitchen shop named Utility adjacent to Mission the Burnleys and Hoffer have been running their TSK restaurant It was the permanent tenant for The Revolving Door a concept earlier established by Albert and Sarah Bouchard In early 2023, after their annual winter break, the Bouchards announced they were rebranding their popular French restaurant as Chanterelle They also announced it would be run under the direction of their executive chef but said chef Albert would continue to consult Burnley said they got into the mix at Chanterelle a year later "We didn’t change the menu or the interior," she said She noted the large number of regular customers of Bouchard who were looking for what they were used to But things changed at the end of last year when they officially acquired the restaurant from the Bouchards we had to put our stamp on it," said Burnley So they closed for four weeks to come up with a new name What is Audette? One thing was certain: the team wanted to continue the 30-year legacy of French dining inspired by the Bouchards She repeatedly mentioned her respect for everything the former owners had built "We want to savor that fine dining style of the past," Burnley said "We want to cater to diners in a special way."
