(LEX 18) — People in Nicholasville are reacting to a recent Facebook post regarding yard sale permits
The post was made Friday by the Nicholasville Police Department
letting the community know they can now fill out an application online
Dozens of people responded in the comments
many wondering why you need a permit in the first place
LEX 18 went and found out the answer from the assistant police chief
the only change we have made to the process for the yard sales and the garage sales
you can go to our website and obtain that permit," explained Nicholasville Assistant Police Chief
It's actually part of a city ordinance that dates back to 2005
Those are overseen and enforced by our code enforcement division
we will spot check to make sure you have your permit
but we are not looking to create any kind of major repercussions or severe penalties for not obtaining that permit," Marshall said
and is overseen and enforced by the Nicholasville Police Department Code Enforcement Division
we don't want ongoing sales happening on these residential properties
what I would describe as maybe an unregulated flea market
What that is going to do is cause an eye sore in your residential areas
It's going to cause issues with traffic and parking and that's the only thing we are trying to avoid," Marshall explained
The Facebook post also reminds people that signs can't be posted in between a sidewalk and roadway or hung on any utility pole or street sign
"We don't want it between a sidewalk and a roadway
mainly because we don't want to impede the traffic
We don't want them hung on our utility poles because that is city property or it's the property of the installing entity
We just want to make sure they get cleaned up at the end of the day," Marshall added
Nicholasville Police stress that this ordinance has been in place for almost 20 years
and they are just trying to make the process of applying for a permit easier on residents
If you are wondering where you can post your yard sale signs
Nicholasville police suggest your front yard or the front of your neighborhood.

Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., awarded the first medical cannabis business license Sept. 26 to KCA Labs, a Nicholasville laboratory.
all medical cannabis products in Kentucky will undergo testing at a safety compliance facility like KCA Labs in Nicholasville
said this is a standard procedure in all states that have legalized cannabis
“We will be testing all of the different types of consumer products that will be available under the medical cannabis program: tinctures
The lab has performed testing on hemp products since 2019
Hemp is defined as having no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels
Sams said the hemp industry took off after Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 and was declassified by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
“I love that the first license is going to an entity that helps us do this safely," Beshear said
the lab will be testing medical cannabis products for levels of solvents
Products that fail a test can either be remedied
by the producer or destroyed if there's no fix
“People who are going to be permitted to use these products are sick
and they need to be protected from some of the substances that we are testing for," Sams said
Some qualifying conditions for patients to use medical cannabis are cancer
post-traumatic stress disorder and multiple sclerosis
“We believe that medical cannabis is an important therapeutic opportunity for patients," Sams said

Nicholasville Road is probably Lexington’s most infuriating road to drive on
Outside of the liminal emptiness of the middle of the night
the road has bumper-to-bumper traffic for miles
I will always avoid driving it whenever possible
The last time I found myself there was when I decided to give it another shot a few months ago after avoiding it a while
but when I was stopped in traffic where Upper and Limestone split
someone hit me from behind and totaled my car
It comes as no surprise, then, that Lexington’s urban planners want to redesign the road. In 2023, the city of Lexington published a study that seeks to reimagine the road
making it more efficient and safer for not only drivers
but also the many pedestrians and bicycle users who use the road
Because much of Nicholasville Road is owned by the Commonwealth (as US 27)
Kentucky’s Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is currently preparing its own study to make its own recommendations
I was able to attend a recent meeting to discuss this project
It is obvious that something has to be done to this road
especially now that UK is planning to build a new cancer center nearby
and private student housing complexes are planned along Nicholasville Road
being ridiculously expensive for a project that often only leads to marginal traffic improvements
One of the proposals that planners in both Lexington and Frankfort are considering that I am most interested in is a potential BRT route on Nicholasville Road
is a bus service that attempts to emulate features of light rail transportation (the modern term for street cars or trams)
This usually involves fare payment at the stops rather than on the bus
buses running more often than traditional bus routes
If BRT lines behave similarly to trains, then why not just use trains? Many cities, like Cincinnati, Detroit, and Phoenix
As much as I love light rail (if the Cincinnati Connector has zero fans
it can be quite costly and requires a lot of infrastructure and maintenance that many mid-sized cities do not have the money
BRT is much cheaper in comparison and much easier to construct and implement
BRT systems can also be used as a proof of concept for future light rail networks
although in my conversations with planners around Lexington
then split off in Clifton (near the University of Cincinnati campus)
with one going towards the northeast of town and the other towards the northwest
and are subject to change in any step of the design process
but the line would most likely start in downtown
stopping at several important intersections along Nicholasville Road
eventually terminating at Man O’ War or even out to Brannon Crossing in the northern end of Jessamine County
It would likely take about as long as driving down the road
with some minor time loss for stopping and boarding
but the dedicated lane could prove helpful during rush hour
and make the bus more enticing if you’re stuck
especially in the more suburban areas of the route
there would likely be park-and-ride lots next to the stops
Seasonal stops might also be implemented in front of Kroger Field
so making this plan work will involve convincing people to use it
resilience against rush hour traffic could potentially be a selling point
The park and ride lots at some stops would also make travelling to multiple destinations along Nicholasville Road more worthwhile
considering the amount of time that could be saved by not having to search for parking at each stop
Even if it doesn’t help traffic all that much, I believe that the BRT route, with other proposals in the full study, would help make Nicholasville Road less daunting for those who dare to traverse it by bike or on foot.Side note: If you haven’t already, you should totally subscribe to Civic Lex
