NILES — A 61-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for sexually molesting a young girl and getting her pregnant
pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison Monday in Berrien County Trial Court
He has credit for 94 days served and must pay $258 in fines and costs
He will have lifetime electronic monitoring if he’s released and must register as a sex offender
The incident occurred in late 2014 at a location in Eau Claire
Berrien County Assistant Prosecutor Myrene Koch argued successfully to have the sentencing guidelines raised because of Wright’s conduct and the impact it had on the victim
were originally 42 to 70 months and were raised to 108 to 180 months
The victim spoke briefly before the sentencing
that she felt isolated at the time and that she was seeking justice for herself and her child
“I don’t think any words I can say can give you justice from your standpoint
but I hope you get closure today,” Berrien County Trial Court Judge Gordon Hosbein said
In addition to objecting to elements of the initial sentencing guidelines
Koch also asked Judge Hosbein to exceed the guidelines
“He did these actions over a long period of time and they had a ripple effect on the victim and others,” she said
Wright apologized to the victim and her family
Judge Hosbein concluded that the sentencing guidelines-even at their higher levels-did not take into account the specifics of this incident including how Wright’s actions affected the victim
“It leads me to believe that there is reason to go above and beyond the guidelines,” the judge said
“The guidelines don’t encapsulate the circumstances of the case.”

as tracked by SPDR S&P 500 SPY has rallied 14% from its April 8 lows through May 2
driven by “better than feared guidance during earnings season and hopes of 90 trade deals in 90 days.”
he now believes “there is not much upside left to this rally,” noting troubling signs as even strong performers like Amazon.com Inc
AAPL declined on Friday despite beating quarterly expectations
“It would not surprise me if the actual announcements turned into sell the news events,” Niles wrote
Niles highlighted the staggering 41% year-over-year increase in imports reported in first-quarter Gross Domestic Product data
suggesting significant demand pull-in ahead of tariffs that “will eventually need to be paid back in future quarters.”
He drew parallels to previous bear market rallies
noting the S&P had 11 rallies of 10% on average during the Global Financial Crisis while ultimately losing 57% over 18 months

Why It Matters: The market slide could present a buying opportunity for a “technical bounce back,” though Niles maintains “fundamental concerns for the longer-term,” according to his previous statements
With the S&P’s trailing price-to-earnings ratio now at 24 times and economic uncertainty “higher today than back then,” Niles believes earnings estimates will ultimately decline for the second half of 2025
Niles previously excluded all “Magnificent 7” tech giants from his top stock picks for 2025
citing “disappointing first-quarter earnings outlook” among his reasons
growing its cash position to $348 billion while being a net seller of stocks for 10 straight quarters
reflecting “caution also on Warren Buffett‘s part.”
Among tech leaders, Niles has previously noted that “‘Magnificent 7’ tech giants have fallen from grace in 2025.”

a family-owned Niles bar and grill is up for sale
Leslie Nottingham first opened Gasoline Alley in 1987 but said after decades of highs and lows
“It makes me sad but then again I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my life,” Leslie said.
From the beginning the bar has always kept its small cozy feel with just a few booths and high tops.
“I'm thrilled that Leslie made that decision that she’s ready but at the same time [I'm] kind of broken hearted,” Farrell Nottingham Leslie’s Husband said.
even us children a lot of life lessons and memories and I think we'll all hold onto that as we go on in our lives,” Alyssa Nottingham
For Leslie the next step is enjoying traveling and seeing her seven kids more
She said it’s not just the walls covered in license plates and old fashioned memorabilia they’ll miss
“We used to always say you're a stranger here but once,” she said.
The doors will stay open until they find the right person to take over
Leslie said she hopes the new owners keep things mostly the same and she's willing to stay on for as long as it takes to teach them the ropes
“I just really hope whoever gets it loves it like I did for all these years,” Leslie said.

BBC Sport football news reporterPublished10 April 202552 CommentsAinsley Maitland-Niles can count stars such as Bukayo Saka
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden among his former team-mates but it is young Lyon sensation Rayan Cherki the ex-Arsenal man describes as the "best natural talent" he has ever seen
Maitland-Niles and Cherki are part of a resurgent Lyon outfit who face Manchester United in the quarter-final of the Europa League at the Groupama Stadium on Thursday (20:00 BST)
Lyon have ex-Premier League players in former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette and ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic
plus World Cup winners in France international Corentin Tolisso and Argentina defender Nicolas Tagliafico
"He is the best natural talent I've ever seen," he tells BBC Sport
Cherki has nine goals and 18 assists in 36 games this season across all competitions but individual moments
like his two mazy dribbles to set up Malick Fofana goals against Rangers or his wonderful vision to pick out striker Georges Mikautadze against PSG have made the headlines
assists and dragging us up the pitch by taking people on and nutmegging them - he is a genius," adds Maitland-Niles
Only three players from Europe's top five leagues - Bruno Fernandes (129)
Raphinha (122) and Joshua Kimmich (113) - have created more than Cherki's 103 chances in all competitions this season
And he ranks second in Ligue 1 for completed dribbles with 74
behind Paris St-Germain's Desire Doue with 79
There are also training videos of Cherki with France Under-21s
where he displays equal ability to control and volley a ball with both feet
"He is now working for the team off the ball and has gone to another level this season."
Maitland-Niles also talks about why Arsenal are too reliant on Saka
moving to France and why Lyon will show Manchester United "respect"
Maitland-Niles has been a near ever-present for Lyon and played 34 matches in all competitions this season
After becoming the second youngest Arsenal player to appear in the Champions League
Maitland-Niles thought he would be at his boyhood club his entire life
The defender had been in the Arsenal academy since the age of six and grew up supporting the club but opted to leave on a free transfer to Lyon in 2023
"Life has obviously taken a different turn," he says
"I thought I'd have been in the Premier League my whole career and things obviously didn't go to plan with Arsenal
"But I'm thankful to the club and they didn't put any blockages when it came to leaving
But why not join another Premier League club
He says: "I told my agent not to tell me which clubs were interested but just the ones with firm offers
"Lyon were the first to come in and it was such a big club showing their trust and belief in me
It was hard to turn down and it was a good time to try something different
I was at a point where I needed to be shown a lot of love and thought it was a good fit for me
I am happy with where I am at this point in time
I am very happy here and enjoying every moment
"I am still that same player as I was at Arsenal but now with a stronger mindset and more consistency and I know what it takes to succeed."
Maitland-Niles won the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2020
A debut under legendary manager Arsene Wenger
a Europa League final start under Unai Emery in 2019
winning the FA Cup with Mikel Arteta in 2020 and winning five England caps all rank among the major landmarks in Maitland-Niles' journey
I watch most of our games and I lived a boyhood dream by winning an FA Cup final at Wembley for the club
who he regards as a "tactical genius in Pep Guardiola's mould"
"[Arteta] really studied how Pep took football to new heights as one of the best managers in the world," he says
"He really studied how to break down teams and be most effective in games
"Arsenal are showing that at this point
not coming close enough to win the league but you can see they are making big improvements by going close two years in a row."
the defender adds: "I wouldn't say there was anything special there
I thought he was a tactical genius but it was an average player-manager relationship
Maitland-Niles also admits it is "frustrating" the club has not followed up that FA Cup success but gives his backing to Arteta
while adding star attacker Saka needs support
"I think they now rely on him a bit too much and you can't expect so much from such a young player," he says
"He hasn't even hit his prime yet
But I think he is the driving force of the team and they miss a bit of attacking threat when he is not playing
"Bukayo has become one of the world's best wingers
knows how to kill off a game and he can pick his moment in a genius way."
is having his breakthrough this season and could be one option to help Saka
he is absolutely incredible and there is no fear in the kid," continues Maitland-Niles
"He is just going at people and trying to make things happen
You can see he is trying to become a leader very early in that team
He is trying to cement his place which is difficult as he plays in the same positions as [Martin] Odegaard and Saka
"But he has got the ability to do so as well
He has the world at his feet and he just needs to take his chance."
Another landmark for Maitland-Niles was winning the Conference League under Mourinho during a successful six-month loan stint at Roma
"He is a really funny guy," says Maitland-Niles
"The stories Jose gave us about his previous dressing rooms and how he has won cup finals and loads of different leagues - that is an experience you can take something from
"There are a lot of players that would say they love him or hate him
But he is a great guy and what you see is what you get."
Maitland-Niles achieved European success in the Conference League for Jose Mourinho's Roma in 2022
who is becoming one of the leaders at Lyon
has warned Thursday's Europa League opponents Manchester United that "people don't realise how big Lyon are"
"We are a historically big club," he adds
"Considering where we were last season
it has been a great year but we need to be addicted to winning
push for more and aim for the Champions League."
Maitland-Niles also says Lyon will try to show Ruben Amorim's United side "respect but just not too much respect"
He adds: "They are not having the greatest season but have players like Bruno (Fernandes) and (Christian) Eriksen can run over you if you show too much respect
we'll give it our all and believe we can win."
returning to England for the second leg will also prove exciting

The Michigan State Police post in Niles is planning a couple of events for the public to come and meet its troopers while having some fun
Post Community Service Trooper Holly Higgs tells us they’re hosting a pancake breakfast on Saturday
It’s something the post has done for a few years around this time of year just to meet the community
“We just love being able to have the community come in and talk to us,” Higgs said
“No one calls us on good days for us to come out to their house
so we just want to meet people on good days and give them a little bit of food.”
Higgs says troopers will be serving homemade pancakes from 9 a.m
the post will host Bike with a Cop at Cassopolis Middle School
Higgs says that will be a chance for anyone to bring out their bicycles and test their skills with the seven members of the post’s bike team
“We are going to set up some of the bike courses that our bike team has the past to be able to be allowed to ride a bike on duty or for escorting marches
So we’re going to set up some of those to have kids be able to try them out.”
They’ll also have bike races for all ages
You can register for Bike with a Cop right here.
was announced by his brother John Edward Niles in a social media post Wednesday
Niles was in his Athens post during a time of tension in the Balkans
and rising tensions between Greece and Turkey
culminating in the so-called Imia crisis in January 1996
Turkey used the running aground of a ship on the eastern of the two Imia islets
to dispute their sovereignty and promote the claim of “gray,” or disputed
Greek and Turkish special forces successively landed on Imia; a Greek Navy helicopter that flew over the islets was downed and three officers were killed
A military escalation was prevented only through intense US diplomatic efforts
President Clinton speaking directly to Turkey’s President
as well as Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke and the US Ambassadors in Athens and Ankara and other top Clinton administration officials
In an archived conversation a year after he left his Athens post, Niles said that the US made a “big mistake” in choosing not to take a position on sovereignty and allow Greece and Turkey to work out their differences
“We knew by the time we took this position that the Greeks were right on the sovereignty argument
The Turks knew that we knew their position was very weak…(w)hen we refused to take a position it sent a signal back to the Turks that we were prepared to countenance or not do anything about aggressive Turkish behavior toward the Greeks…We did not want to offend an important ally
but what this led to was a succession of Turkish claims and statements about the Aegean territorial issues that poisoned the relationship with Greece even further,” Niles stated
Niles also commented on Holbrooke’s jibe at the European Union
that it slept during the night of the crisis while the US tried to defuse it
“That was a deprecatory comment about the European Union
The British reacted badly to this,” Niles said
who inherited the crisis when he was chosen by socialist MPs to succeed the ailing PASOK party founder and leader Andreas Papandreou as premier just a few days prior
also indirectly chided the EU when he said “I thank the Americans” during a parliamentary debate
prompting apoplectic reactions by politicians
who accused him of insufficient patriotism
Niles also served as an Ambassador to Canada (1985-89) and the European Union (1989-91)
as well as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs (1991-93)
He was succeeded as Ambassador to Athens by R

When Jalen Niles joined Florida A&M’s baseball team in 2020
he never envisioned how much the program would mean to him
the 23-year-old holds the Rattlers in high regard as he enters the home stretch of his college baseball career
This weekend, Niles and his senior FAMU baseball teammates will be honored as they play their final home series versus Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent Alabama A&M
But I’ve enjoyed every single moment of it ― all the people I’ve met

“It doesn’t get any better than FAMU baseball

FAMU head baseball coach Jamey Shouppe recruited the then-150-pound and shorthaired Niles out of Tampa’s Jesuit High School
Niles is one of FAMU’s best defenders with a .935 fielding percentage
“Jay has grown up a lot since he came in his freshman year and redshirted
He’s started basically every game since then,” Shouppe said of his shortstop
and he’s one of our leaders on this year’s team.”

Becoming a FAMU grad added Niles to his family’s legacy of Rattlers and HBCU graduates
“It’s kind of a full circle momentum for being able to come here and play a college sport at the school that a bunch of my family went to,” Niles said
it feels like this is where I was supposed to be.”

the lessons and wisdom Niles has imparted to his hometown friend will still resound in the FAMU baseball program
but with the teams that I’ve been a part of,” Niles said
“Being a part of some of the best teams FAMU has had has been my goal since I got here.”
Niles has worked tirelessly to make sure he plays this weekend
Last Saturday, April 26, he left FAMU’s series versus Grambling State with a leg injury after a defender landed on him
He wore a boot and watched the rest of the series from the dugout but has been practicing without it leading up to the Rattlers’ home finale series versus the Alabama A&M Bulldogs
“I don’t want the last time I’m playing here to be me getting stepped on,” Niles said
“I wanted to return and play my last game on my terms
FAMU baseball versus Alabama A&M’s SWAC series start times are 5 p.m
Niles and his fellow Rattler baseball graduates will be recognized for Senior Day in a pregame ceremony on Sunday
“It’s going to be weird not putting his name in the lineup after having done it for four years,” Shouppe said of Niles
I’m going to miss him as well as his family next year
we can say good-bye with a SWAC Championship ring.”
Niles’ resume’ is a testament to how he blossomed on Moore-Kittles Field
“All the memories and countless hours even when nobody was here,” Niles said when asked what Moore-Kittles Field means to him
“It’s not just the games ― but the hard work that’s been put in and the friendships that have been made here
learning about the game and growing as a man.”
All games will be played at Moore-Kittles Field on FAMU's campus

NILES — After 12 years of dedicated service to Niles
Jeff Dunlap is retiring from his role as the city’s Utilities Manager
Stepping in to guide the department is Madison Mosher
Niles’ Assistant Utilities Manager who has been working for the city for almost two years
The Niles City Council unanimously moved to appoint Mosher to interim utilities manager effective May 5
Dunlap submitted his notice of retirement effective July 13
Jeff Dunlap will move to a support/mentor role and will continue to serve the City as the Building Official until his retirement
She’s a fresh face and has fresh ideas
I think it’s going to really be exciting for the rate payers in the city
Mosher worked in South Bend doing environmental consulting after graduating from college
she worked in compliance with Indeck Energy Center
Dunlap has spent more than 45 years in local government
Dunlap was employed with Niles Charter Township from 1983 to 2013
He worked as a police officer for the township from ’83 to 2005
when he became the township’s building official
While he is proud of what he has been able to accomplish for the city
the Pucker Street Dam project is one he is especially proud of
“It was difficult to visualize what that could become and it turned out better than we expected,” Dunlap said
“Our fish and wildlife service representative said that we’re the model for other places that have aging games
I get calls from places asking ‘how did you do it
what did you do,’ because we stepped up and did what’s right and not necessarily was the cheapest or what corporate America would have done traditionally
it’s gonna be there forever and that’s beautiful.”
Mosher is looking forward to building on the foundation Dunlap has laid for the city
he’s done a really great job and he’s built this foundation that I’m happy to be able to build off of,” she said
“I think he was really good at construction and projects and got the system to where it needed to be health and age-wise
I’m really looking to see what we can do with that going forward
It’s just about looking inward at business processes and procedures and building on what he’s already started
so I’m excited to see what we do next.”

Berrien County Trial Court Judge Gordon Hosbein agreed in part with Koch although he didn’t think it rose to the level of sadism
“It was abuse and went beyond parental discipline,” he said
she at first said she couldn’t remember what happened and then said it had gotten out of hand,” Koch said
“It was her responsibility and duty to take care of her children
the guidelines can’t fathom what the children went through.”
In his comments before the sentencing
French said he’s not sure if Jackson actually understands all that’s going on
He said that the incident will change her and her children’s lives forever
noting that the children are in foster care
Judge Hosbein called the videos he saw of the incident “horrendous.”
“This was a terrible situation where the children were abused for who knows how long and they will be dealing with it for a lifetime,” he said

The casket of Chicago Fire Department Capt
John Brebeuf Church in Niles for his funeral
Meyer was killed while battling a fire in the Austin neighborhood April 23
Hundreds of firefighters stood at attention
as pallbearers carried Chicago Fire Department Capt
John Brebeuf Church in Niles Tuesday morning
freshly shined shoes and crisp white hats to the sound of bagpipes and the rattle of drums
Meyer would have shaken his head at all the attention directed his way
“Dave would have hated this,” Mulcrone said to open the service
causing laughter to ripple through the room
Meyer died April 23 after a roofing beam fell on him while battling an Austin garage fire that officials have said was arson
He was 54 and had been a Chicago firefighter for 28 years
Charles K. Green, who lives near the fire scene in the 5400 block of West Potomac Avenue, was charged with arson and murder after allegedly starting the fire
A massive American flag billowed in the wind outside the church Tuesday as the procession made its way through the closed suburban streets
Red ribbons were tied on most trees and lamp posts in honor of Meyer
and dozens of people lined the streets with miniature American flags
Mayor Brandon Johnson
Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt and Chicago Police Supt
friends and fellow firefighters in remembering Meyer as a dedicated firefighter
“He was probably the hardest-working person I’ve ever met
but I don’t know if he ever worked a day in his life,” said retired firefighter Kevin Casey
who worked on the West Side with Meyer for more than 10 years
Meyer had been a firefighter for about five years
Meyer packed up his gear and went to New York
where he spent days assisting in search and rescue efforts
They’re made by how they chose to live their lives,” Mulcrone said
met Meyer at Ground Zero in the days after the attacks
They connected early and forged a decades-long friendship marked by annual check-in calls on September 11
Verhelst addressed Meyer’s wife and four kids during his funeral remarks
“If you ever wonder where you can find Dave
it’s in every one of you and always will be.”
Speakers shared stories of Meyer’s defining qualities: generosity
a chief at the fire department’s 18th battalion
remembering the time he brought Burns’ niece a tank of gas when she ran out; fixed a friend’s motorcycle that had blown a transmission in the middle of the Badlands desert; and shoveled the sidewalk for Burns after a snowstorm while he was on vacation in Florida
recalled Meyer’s simple but effective mantra: “Don’t be an a- -hole today.”
attendees dabbed at their eyes with tissue and sniffled as they choked up
laughter and applause filled the church as loved ones told stories of Meyer’s antics
especially practical jokes that toed the line between getting a good laugh and going too far
He once covered his neighbor’s car in plastic wrap
forcing him to break out the scissors at 5:30 a.m
Meyer talked his daughter into coming with him to a neighbor’s house
positioned her on the stairs upside down and drew a chalk outline around her to stage a fake crime scene
His kids were raised on their dad’s antics
and they began as early as the first day of his son’s life
“He wanted to name me Harley because his name was David
David’s son,’” as a nod to the motorcycle company and Meyer’s own beloved bike
His daughter Alyssa said her dad made an appearance at nearly every skating competition she attended
Starbucks strawberry refresher in the other.”
One of Meyer’s fellow firefighters from Engine 106
recalled a shift when the whole crew stopped by Lane Tech High School’s track meet to watch his daughter Kaitlyn
he couldn’t fathom the idea of missing the chance to watch her
Meyer found love at age 16 when he met his wife Kristen at Lane Tech
Alyssa and Kaitlyn; and granddaughter Emerson

NILES — A Niles Community Schools teacher has been placed on leave after a video posted on the internet purported the teacher attempting to conduct inappropriate behavior with a minor

$15,000 goal to win matching grant through MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places initiative
the Niles History Center and the City of Niles announced today
which is being offered through the Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity.
“This project will give life to the site of the historic Ferry Street School and act as historic preservation through placemaking,” said MEDC Regional Prosperity Managing Director Paula Holtz
“We are pleased to support and provide resources for this project through our Public Spaces Community Places program.”
the Colored Citizens of Niles successfully petitioned the City Council to build a new school for their children
A one-room brick school was constructed at the corner of 7th and Ferry Streets
the school served all the children in the Ferry Street neighborhood.
Ferry Street School was also a beloved community gathering place for the Niles community
including an event with famed activist Sojourner Truth
recognizing the school's historical significance
Ferry Street School was designated a Michigan State Historic Site. The Niles History Center began offering programs for children to experience a one-room schoolhouse setting and discover how local citizens fought for educational opportunities
the Ferry Street School suffered a devastating fire
Only the north facade remained after the flames swept through
A plan was crafted by the City of Niles and the Ferry Street Resource Center to preserve what remained and create a memorial park to honor the school's historic legacy
A barrier-free entrance will ensure that all can enter and use the park with ease.
“Losing the Ferry Street School to a fire was devastating; building this park with the remaining façade will allow us to remember and honor this special place,” said Christina Arseneau
“The park will continue the tradition of serving our community and we are fortunate to be able to utilize the Public Spaces Community Places program to create the new Ferry Street School Memorial Park.”
“Placemaking is all about creating space for a community to come together
and the Ferry Street School Memorial Park will do just that,” said Dan Gilmartin
CEO and Executive Director of the Michigan Municipal League
“The school had deep historic connections for the residents of Niles
This project is a beautiful way to preserve both the physical façade of the building and the school’s role as a gathering place for the Niles community.”
The Public Spaces Community Places initiative started in 2014 with MEDC providing matched funding of up to $50,000 for community improvement projects throughout Michigan
MEDC has provided more than $13.6 million in matching grants
400 projects have been successful in reaching their goal
with more than $15.5 million raised from 73,921 individual donors
Communities have a 97 percent success rate in achieving their goals and earning matching funds.

MI (WSBT) — Niles Charter Township Board of Trustees approved an unlimited number of dispensaries in Niles
those businesses can apply to open up shop
While the township Board of Trustees voted to allow an unlimited number of dispensaries within the township
there are multiple regulations those businesses must strictly follow within the township guidelines
The ordinance would allow one transporter of cannabis products along with one safety compliance facility within the township for regulations of dispensaries
Niles Township will not allow dispensaries with cannabis licenses Class A
and C to grow marijuana products along with holding events within township limits
Dispensaries must operate at least five-hundred feet away from any public or private school
Officials say businesses must possess a state and township license to operate
Those businesses will have to pay a $5,000 township license fee annually every June 1st
The township does have the authority to press fines and revoke business licenses if a dispensary does not comply with regulations
Monday night's board meeting did have mixed feelings on the ordinance passing
"I give kudos to our police department
but when I can walk out of any business in Niles Township
it's not being policed," said a Niles resident
Marge Durm-Hiatt (R) Niles Charter Township Supervisor said it's something that failed four years ago and came back up
"It failed four years ago and it came back up last November and it passed
And we've been working on the ordinance ever since then
Working with the zoning and planning commission to protect the Township as much as possible," said Durm-Hiatt
With the township board approving the ordinance Monday night
applications for potential businesses with Niles Charter Township will be reviewed starting May 1st
