Head Coach Robert Young The quality of the fields and the potential for warmer weather make the long travel down to these meets worth it Every student-athlete in our program was able to get into a field that provided a competitive challenge The hot and windy conditions for most of Friday unfortunately hindered some of those athletes' times but overall we had a lot of really quality races on the weekend She had great discipline with her pacing early and we couldn't have asked for a better start to the outdoor season Sophia picked up where she left off last spring with a small lifetime best in the 5k She's been training so well lately that we think this is just the beginning of an excellent spring Both Grace Riddle and Derin Apul demonstrated that they are on track to develop into very strong racers starting near the back of their fields when the overall pace was too hot and moving up throughout to give themselves a chance to win the section Had it been cooler these certainly would've been PR times but either way they were great racing efforts John Paul's 800m was our race of the weekend We had hoped to find a race to set up for a push to qualify for nationals later in the spring We got that and more with his exceptionally well-executed race and PR to become MTU's #2 all-time Tucker ran the best race he's run in a long time He positioned himself ideally throughout the heat but no doubt learned some key lessons he can use later this spring Our freshmen 800 duo continued to impress with both Grace and Brielle taking another step forward They are developing so fast right now it's exciting to think where we may be able to get to when it's warmer leading throughout with very consistent splits We know that this discipline usually takes a few races until we see our best and are quite pleased with these initial efforts Gavin Roberts had a great weekend His 5k/1500m double was very impressive and showcased some great gains in fitness Sam Shaver had an excellent debut in the 1500m She was patient throughout most of the race and managed to run a blazing 69-second last lap to completely break the field and take the win Broderick Stewart's first outdoor 800m was a great success It was awesome to see him run a successful race as he has moved up from the 400 Overall our teams dealt with some non-ideal weather conditions but competed very well We were up for the challenge of this large event and showed that we are ready to go as we head into the rest of the season The women of Michigan Tech sparked the opening weekend with three personal-best in the invite sections. Cedar Gordon lowered her time over 10,000m, clocking a 37:06.07. Claire Endres shaved nearly 30 seconds off her personal-best in the 3,000m steeplechase Sophomore standout Sophia Rhien also reached a new personal record running 17:17.07 in the nightcap for the Huskies on Thursday Veterans John Paul Norland and Tucker Ringhand highlighted the second day of the WashU Distance Carnival Norland's personal-best of 1:50.87 placed him fourth in a heat that saw the winner clock an effort of 1:50.45 Ringhand concluded the night with a personal-best over 5,000m challenging for the win before ultimately taking third in his heat lowering his personal record by nearly five seconds with a 14:34.52 mark Multiple Huskies doubled back from Friday's races at the Billiken Invite with Ringhand and Donavan Mattson returned from the 5,000m running the metric mile. Lucas Seng led the Black & Gold in the 1,500m in his debut at the distance dipping under 4 minutes with a time of 3:59.74 Ringhand was just shy of a sub four finish with his 4:00.92 with Mattson close behind lowering his personal record of 4:02.48 Freshman Sam Shaver also made her 1,500m debut winning her heat in a time of 4:56.42 as Rhein led the Huskies running 4:54.46 Danny Ezzo's first race on the track since the GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May of 2023 Jesse Henderson cleared 13-11.25 (4.25m) in the pole vault on his second attempt to claim second overall The Huskies will divide and conquer in two weeks sending a squad to the Platteville Invitational on April 11th and 12th with the rest of the team traveling downstate to the Chippewa Invitational on the 12th Thanks for visiting The use of software that blocks ads hinders our ability to serve you the content you came here to enjoy We ask that you consider turning off your ad blocker so we can deliver you the best experience possible while you are here I am burning the Bishop while he sleeps. I'd say it's nothing personal, but quite a lot in medieval management sim Norland is personal He shouldn't have slept with the Queen's sister He shouldn't have insisted his lover subsequently pay him for a confession to absolve herself of the guilt accrued from sleeping with him He shouldn't have felt safe in a room next to the Queen a woman described as "reckless" in her character traits and who is perilously close to having a nervous breakdown is how your bed chamber becomes a raging inferno the village of Nandos (you can name your own settlements) is covered in more blood than the back end of the bard's best work Norland pushes you into a deep pool of fuck-ups and shortages with the smug enthusiasm of a sim containing enough gears and cogs to crack a hundred nuts You can ask Lords to spend time with one another all in some effort to resolve disputes or improve relationships a larger world map shows other towns with their own Lords all of which you can trade with or become allied to through marriage you can also conquer them with a bloody fist calm down.) There are a lot more options involving intrigue and politicking and here too the royal garb of Paradox's monarchy sim drags itself across Norland's shining floor Even the dark cool palette of the menu boxes and the painterly loading screens remind me of good times imprisoning the children of rival kings what started as a hodgepodge of states would become a landscape half-dominated by a single alliance with cheeky Nandos sadly bleeding in the corner Perhaps I should not have spent so long min-maxing my Lords to be the most off-kilter family of the (fantasy) middle ages the Lord creation at the beginning of a game lets you tweak stats and personality quirks You can rename lots of characters and towns too (something I always appreciate in a management sim like this) My noble family would consist of two sisters bringing up a baby boy She is the reckless and militant caretaker of the improbably polite boy On paper she'll be good at commanding armies I spent a similarly long time just naming the provinces and neighbouring kings before the game even kicked off And I think this is where I understood Norland had some claws It wasn't long before I was in the thick of town management staring down at five peasants sleeping rough in the streets with a bunch more wandering around the fields in the morning looking clueless because the Lord who was supposed to give them instructions was too busy teaching management to a toddler Progress is quite slow (helped a little by some obligatory fast-forward buttons) Every few days a holy caravan visits and it sells a much-needed commodity - books To make new buildings or improvements possible then assign a Lord to read that book and slurp up all the knowledge Some books you can buy include: "Intimidation Of Tramps" Once one of your bigwigs has learned a piece of knowledge or the basic understanding required to cook meat properly and nobody else knows how to do that thing then the ability to enjoy these things vanishes the disaster machine is all coming together now this is not how my personal disaster unfolds because you can hire these characters as temporary Lords for some costly silver rings That means more help to tell the peasants what to do I do not know that she completely and utterly loathes the Queen All I know is that she's intelligent and can run a good brewery Jula will never really make Nandos feel like her own home There is a way to convince freelance Lords like this to stay to grant them a title and offer them a permanent place in your weird-ass family The only person Jula hates more than the Queen is the Queen's new baby The next visitors to upend the natural order (what little natural order we have established in Nandos) are quick to follow King No Nose of Pringleton is coming to visit I can even see him as he trundles towards the settlement on the world map because I want to improve my relationship with his kingdom enough to set up a long-term trade agreement to offload my overabundant stocks of rutabagas in exchange for something better who triggers some tutorials about the mood-destroying effects of sin they will refuse to perform their overseeing tasks and the peasants will take the chance to chill out So if the guilt from sinning can wreck a characters mood you can confess to the Bishop and relieve this spiritual pain and his holiness blesses us with his mere presence We offer the Bishop a room in one of our unoccupied lordly houses Piety is important to the people of Nandos In the next room Jula is fucking a rutabaga farmer called Oisin For a minute I think this will not bode well The good news is that King No Nose has slept through the entire horny fiasco The bad news is that Madam MacDrip is so overcome with sinful guilt the next morning that she refuses to work until she can absolve herself the way to achieve absolution is to confess her sin to the same Bishop she was riding last night That's when I find out the cost of this ritual: six silver rings Who would have thought the church could be so conniving Everything that happens afterwards is disaster upon disaster but I don't have the housing to accommodate them wracked with false guilt and stretched thin across field and lumberyard A "fleshwolf" attacks a stray peasant in the woods and then wanders into the library its mouth bloody and examining baby Pinkcheeks like a pudding it doesn't want right now in an effort to purge nearby wolves and maybe even improve their relationship (hunts can result in "deep" conversations between characters) but scarcely have they donned their armour than they break into a physical fight between themselves Baby Looksmax and Pinkcheeks are having some kind of lute-playing contest and judging by the emoji-like icons appearing in their speech bubbles (skulls medicine bottles) I can only conclude that they are discussing what it means to die The mine we spent so long researching goes unused a prophecy arrives - a little pop-up note from the church that says: get ready your town will someday soon be attacked by a pack of eleven wolves I dismiss the letter with grim cynicism and look at the Bishop who still hasn't left our town drinking our moonshine and eating our vegetables while doing nothing useful He fills one of our manor houses with his stench every night I gained far more laughter from it than other Rimworld competitors in any case And I haven't even got truly stuck into the inter-city trading or the marriage proposals the alliance making or the war-mongering (one downside about the game is that it will take some time to learn) it won't be from the god forsaken town of Nandos the clerical bed pest and sextortionist in purple robes And I remember something else the game lets you do I set a task for one of the lords: Attempt to Kill the Bishop played music with him in front of the whole town and made angel face emojis at him as she walked him back to her chambers where again they did what Bishops are wont to do As he stumbled back into his own room at one in the morning the Queen quietly rose and followed at some distance And - this is the damnedest thing - he survived only to be stamped out by the feet of a dozen panicking peasants Not only did he fail to succumb to the burns from this terrible ordeal I found he gets a mood boost from "religious enjoyment of injuries" When the wolves of prophecy approached shortly afterwards Baby Looksmaxx suffered a gruesome death in the jaws of three slavering beasts might not be as deep or fleshed-out as its sci-fi stablemate Rimworld but it still feels surprisingly complex and varied By the time the sun set on my settlement's last day and the peasants were dragging every corpse they could to the pyre next to the village altar No part of this website or its content may be reproduced without the copyright owner's permission Rock Paper Shotgun is a registered trademark of Gamer Network Limited The forfeit drops Norland’s record to 6-3 and strips the Vikings of the Class 4A District 15 title AH is now the district champ with a 6-3 overall record 27 in our national rankings created with our proprietary algorithm I knew I wanted to be a nanny from the time I was 14. It was an unusual goal for a sporty boy growing up in Brighton, in the South of England and my other career goal was to be a skateboard film maker My sister was a nanny in Norland College and she was always telling me about the fun she had at work so I grew up knowing that caring isn't about a blood connection and I wanted to choose to care for children It was hard work to get into Norland College I had to redo some of my high school classes because my grades weren't high enough everyone from my friends and family to school counselors supported me I think they could see how nannying was a perfect fit for my personality When I was finally accepted to Norland I was the only male student in a class of 300 future nannies We were all brought together by our passion for caring for kids and being at Norland really validated the career ambition I'd had for so long Despite that, there was a learning curve. The first time I held an infant I felt so awkward "do you really want me to hold that tiny baby?" But when I picked the baby up I was flooded with love and affection There's just an innate human ability to be nurturing I think this assumption comes from the stereotype that caregivers must be feminine I love introducing kids to sports and building legos I'm great at imagination play: I can turn an empty room into a dinosaur-filled jungle and help kids have the best day ever with nothing but their minds Some people are thrilled to have a male nanny Others have turned me down because I'm a guy because there are so many families out there Last year I took my first full-time position I was honestly surprised that her parents chose me but it was the most beautiful relationship Not that I do too much posting — when I'm at work my personal phone is off I have a work phone that I use for contacting the parents the rest of my world is pushed aside and I'm entirely focused on the kids Being a nanny is an incredibly high-energy job Realistically I know I won't be able to maintain that energy forever and then open a childcare center in London What I'm most looking forward to is being a dad but four is probably a more realistic number nurturing children will always be part of my life Please log in to Games Press for the following accompaniments to this announcement: Don't have a login? If you work within the games trade (press, influencer, developer, publisher or PR agency) you can register here but the medieval colony sim definitely had its problems Getting monarchs and nobles to do what you needed to ensure your colony's survival could be tricky when all they cared about was getting laid and acquiring holy rings as status symbols and this often led to your colonies collapsing in ways you couldn't avoid It appears developer Long Jaunt wasn't happy with how Norland's early access build played either The studio has just released a "damn big update" (literally what it is called) that not only adds a bunch of stuff to the game but completely reworks the core mechanics to make it more enjoyable "I couldn't come up with a better name than 'A Damn Big Update'," writes the game's designer Dmitry Glaznev "We're rolling out some radical changes to the core gameplay in the beta branch…as many have rightly suspected I'm not the most enthusiastic designer of standard mechanics so it took time to pinpoint what wasn’t working in the core gameplay loop and find ways to make it better it seems the game is more enjoyable to play." but the most significant is made to how work tasks within a colony are assigned you had multiple lords who each took charge of overseeing production in several buildings in the colony providing instructions to workers every day a single lord issues orders to all servants a change intended to reduce micromanagement and make the game feel less like you're playing a city builder and a life sim at the same time This isn't the only area where Norland's experience has been streamlined The "needs" tab for characters has been completely removed with the game now focussing primarily on character desires Long Jaunt explains this design as follows: "Since [needs are] mostly physiological they didn’t apply well to elites who never worry about food or shelter it became clear that social factors had a much greater influence on their thoughts" It's worth noting that the needs themselves remain but they have less impact on what the devs refer to as "thought management" Other changes include a reworked migration system that's connected to your settlement's overall mood so that more people arrive when your settlement is happy and start to leave only when the mood becomes really sour with scaffolds performing executions automatically The morning church sermon has been removed giving your villagers more time to get things done and your peasants are no longer dependent on alcohol to remove fatigue with booze instead providing a morale boost There's a raft of additions outside the core loop Changes to diplomacy let you "burn other kings' vassals to the ground" and conduct "dark dealings" in the wake of peace treaties Kings can now actively make puppets out of other characters while seduction can be used as a political weapon and there are several balance adjustments to systems like forest regrowth and field fertility to make them easier to manage which is good because getting enough wood for construction in the original build was a massive pain Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals The update is currently available to test in the beta branch, and following any further tweaks, will presumably be coming to the stable branch soon. being a loud statement win for Miami Norland Ennio Yapoor accounted for three touchdowns and Norland’s talented defense forced four takeaways and returned a fumble for a score as the Vikings routed Cocoa 33-14 on Friday night Yapoor threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one – all in the first half – as Norland (5-1 That was more than enough scoring for Norland’s defense Shawn Smith scored on a 30-yard fumble return in the second quarter after a strip sack by Adrian Farrow (FAU commit) in the second quarter Darryll and Mandrell Desir – twin UCF commits – both had sacks and knocked down passes at the line of scrimmage I think we played a great game,” Darryll Desir said but as soon as we got hot it was on from there.” Norland coach Daryle Heidelburg said his defense was “outstanding.” “They have some big-time players on that team but we were able to pretty much shut them down,” he said “They made plays as all big-time players do but all that 'throw for 400 yards' and all that stuff they were talking about Mandrell Desir said the Vikings' defensive line is the best in the nation it certainly has an argument for one of the best in Florida Few teams can roll out three FBS commits with the size and ability of the Desir twins and Farrow All three were disruptive and made things difficult for Cocoa quarterback Brady Hart all night Had Norland’s backups not surrendered a touchdown in the final minutes the Vikings were set to become the first team to hold Cocoa under 10 points since 2015 The Tigers have dropped back-to-back games for the first time since the first two games of the 2022 season But Cocoa’s three losses have come against IMG All three teams are ranked in the Super 25 Look for Cocoa to try to start building some momentum as it pursues its third consecutive state title Norland’s offensive and defensive lines played well on Friday The offensive line opened holes in the run game consistently and gave Yapoor plenty of time to pass Yapoor had a clean pocket for more than eight seconds – an incredibly long time for a quarterback to be able to be able to survey the field Both lines deserve a game ball for this one 5 player on the USA Today Florida Network Top 100 had another solid game with a sack and three quarterback hurries/knockdowns Norland’s offensive game plan called for almost all run plays to go away from Hilson Even with Cocoa moving Zay Hawkins around the line It’s a strategy teams have been using and will certainly look to duplicate in the postseason The Brady Hart-Jayvan Boggs connection remains eliteSure but Hart and Boggs can connect against anyone opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Boggs Boggs had several catches in the game despite taking on a talented The Desir twins say they remain 100% committed to UCF but are listening to pitches from Florida State say they are willing to wait until the early signing period to make a final decision who has thrown for more than 11,000 yards and 93 touchdowns in his varsity career said his top two schools right now are FIU and Alabama State said he primarily is talking to UCF right now Norland four-star sophomore cornerback Kenton Dopson III intercepted a pass on order” order on Friday Here some video highlights from the action a few takeaways from the contest a Miami Hurricane commit was wrecking havoc throughout the game what was different this year against the Vikings Miami Central’s pass rush was virtually unstoppable in this one pressuring Norland quarterback Ennio Yapoor throughout while recording a whopping 11 sacks Yapoor did throw a pair of touchdown passes as he he found wide receiver Jaden Page in the end zone at the end of the first quarter and completed a 7-yard TD toss to Jahmari Smith with just 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter Several of the Rockets defenders turned in standout plays 2025 #31 DB Dewey Davis INT a Norland pass 2025 #17 ATH Karon Maycock forced a safety The weather was not on any quarterback’s side on Friday in the first quarter was able to find Sekou Smith Jr put the moves on Viking defenders all night and scored with a diving touchdown grab It was quiet night statistically for Florida Gator commit Nae’shaun Montgomery but he showcased his abilities with one clutch play which paved the way for touchdown which propelled Miami Central into the lead for good getting open a making a first down catch to sustain the drive with 36 seconds left in the half and the Rockets went to the half with a 13-6 lead In addition to showcasing an excellent release The Miami Norland offense was limited to just 14 points Miami Norland got a quality performance from its defense 2027 CB Kenton Dobson was on Nae’shaun Montgomery and did a nice job limiting him ISABELLA NAVASIsabella Navas has been a sports The next power rankings are scheduled to be released on Tuesday Administrator of Public Relations for the FHSAA wrote in an email to the FHSAA Network on Monday that there may be more teams that have to forfeit games Miami Central is the most recent team to face FHSAA sanctions as it self-reported using a fifth-year player in all nine of its games this season which were 8-1 and a unanimous selection as the No are now 0-9 and almost certain to miss the postseason They were also fined $900 officially and has been placed on Administrative Probation until Nov It's a heavy blow for a program that was seeking its 10th state championship and fifth in the past six seasons. Central is ranked No. 6 on the USA Today Florida Network Super 25 and has been the unanimous selection as the No If Pembroke Pines-Somerset Academy beats Pompano Beach on Thursday Somerset will become the new District 15-3A champion Why did The First Academy have to forfeit games? The First Academy which had more than 30 players transfer into the program during the offseason and was banned from the powerful they're having sex," I sighed as my King and his wife is not a typical reaction to seeing two people express their affection for one another But Harold and Carol's unconsummated love life has been threatening the stability of my entire Kingdom although one of those wouldn't go amiss either but lately he's been too preoccupied with his royal duties to see to his marital ones has a libido to rival an entire warren of rabbits to the point where she's been considering bribing peasants into her bed for Carol to cheat on Harold could have all manner of nasty consequences It could send Harold spiralling into a depression that leads to a nervous breakdown rendering him unable to give orders to his peasants thus grinding the entire Kingdom to a halt trying to push them together for walks and chats and even a spot of wolf hunting which hopefully means I can focus on all the Kingdom's other problems and that big camp of bandits threatening a raid is a game about building a glorious medieval empire on the backs of deeply human feudal lords whose unstable emotions and courtly bickering is enough to manage before you consider the many peasants who live and die at their whim Yet where Crusader Kings communicates this through the medium of global grand strategy Norland does it through a RimWorld-style colony simulation one where every in-game event—from breakfast to beheading—is visibly depicted in real-time.  The result is a vivid representation of how the needs of a community can rub painfully against the caprice of those in power like your King telling a mean joke to his sister-in-law can spark personal vendettas and even wars that will dog your domain for weeks one of planting buildings and generating resources and connecting production chains all of which goes toward growing a population of simulated humans You need to build houses for your peasants to sleep in farms and lumbermills for them to raise crops and process wood mills and breweries for them to turn rye and rutabagas into flour and moonshine and civic buildings like taverns and temples to satisfy their higher needs The key twist in Norland's management side is that outside of a few actions like construction you don't issue orders directly to peasants who will then either carry them out directly or delegate to peasants No building can operate without regular instructions from a lord so they spend much of their time wandering between production buildings shaking their fists at the lower orders researching new structures and technologies from books visiting other kingdoms on diplomatic missions and of course can spark personal vendettas and even wars to the point where they'd struggle to fit everything in if they were perfectly efficient robots with needs and desires of their own.  They need to socialise with other characters particularly those they have good relationships with they need to pray regularly and confess their sins to priests Fitting all these alongside a lord's schedule is tricky but they all have to be tended to at some point Going without a need for too long will impact a lord's mood they'll refuse to perform their daily tasks But unsatisfied needs can also lead them to make reckless decisions And these decisions can spiral out in pretty wild ways Remember I mentioned the perils of cheating I played as the happily married King Barry and his wife Marie until Marie cheated on Barry with a peasant until her shame led her to reveal her affair to Barry divorcing Marie and remarrying another Lord called Sasha who I'd recruited as a 'free' lord before making an official member of the family divorce didn't stop the wound from festering until both Larry and Sasha burned with the desire to murder Marie Desires are essentially one off needs that appear procedurally based on certain parameters They can range from wanting to eat meat to going to extremes to make them happen if you don't satisfy them first Marie's death would have been extremely bad for my Kingdom because Marie was my chief researcher and knowledge dies with a lord unless it is shared in conversation with other lords So to sate Barry and Sasha's bloodlust in a (slightly) less dangerous way I had them both challenge Marie to individual duels had a nervous breakdown and spent three days in an alcoholic stupor (insert 'bon Appetit' meme here) but she emerged from all this misery alive and sanguine about the whole affair until she decided she wanted to murder Barry's sister-in-law forcing me to set up another duel in which Marie got herself killed taking half of my unlocked production buildings with her But that's another story (that I am not at all bitter about) The cause and effect of Norland's systems is incredibly lucid and it produces some wonderfully entertaining simulated drama you'll be doing things like dealing with bandit raids and criminals stealing your goods or murdering your peasants And all of this while trying to establish a thriving village and economy managing the wages of your soldiers and peasants judging how much surplus produce to sell on to the local trader and deciding whether you want to save some money with a spot of prison labour.  Outside of your village is an entire continent of rival nations that you can trade with These nations will in turn ally and fight with each other at least until they are fallen upon by the rampaging tribal horde that emerges a few hours into the game itself a whole other problem you'll need to solve at some point this layer of Norland is a little broader strokes than the underlying colony simulation as having to manage the geoscape at the same level of depth would make Norland incredibly finicky wobbling Jenga tower that is your Kingdom to compete at that international level is no small feat There are dozens of plates for your lords to spin and a bad day can result in one or several lords dropping all of theirs such disasters are fun rather than frustrating But there are a couple of systems that seem overly primed toward gumming up the works.  Your lords don't concern themselves with paltry gold their currency is "Holy Rings" which they wear to display their status They can only be purchased from the wandering trader who rocks up to your Kingdom once every few days This makes them a tightly controlled resource But rings are also the source of the most common "desires" Lords will constantly yearn to possess X number of rings or want to avoid having the least rings in the family Your lords' obsession over rings leads to some amusing scenarios King Barry's brother Larry got so fixated over them that he clonked Larry over the head and stole his rings from him only for his wife (and Marie's killer) to do the same thing to him several days later I also like how it plays into the game's themes comfortable lords tie themselves into knots over these useless trinkets all while their subjects starve because the rutabaga farmers haven't received any instructions for a week but they also constantly want to do things like have affairs with peasants and absolve their sins (such as having affairs with peasants) lords often end up in deteriorating cycles of ring-related sadness that you often can't address because they're such a limited item it doesn't help at all when three of your lords simultaneously desire to not have the least number of rings Comfortable lords tie themselves into knots over these useless trinkets Whereas every other problem in Norland feels like it can be addressed with careful management rings can arbitrarily screw you over in ways you cannot resolve It's a problem that requires a nudge rather than an overhaul to fix you spend too much time with this one small part of the game to the detriment of the wider experience.  and the lack of clarity over how you equip (and unequip) warriors with specific weapons and armour It already feels like a complete experience and watching CK-style dramas play out in real time is pretty darned compelling I'll leave you with one last tale of ribaldry Characters who get pregnant in-game will start to suffer from morning sickness and one day King Barry's new wife Sasha blew chunks all over her bed and lay down beside Sasha in the big green pool of sick Thomas Aquinas wasn't the only big time South Florida tilt that was supposed to take place coach Dameon Jones expected Chaminade overcame three first half turnovers and pulled away with a 45-20 victory against a strong Miami Norland squad “That’s what I say every year,” Jones said What the Lions are regularly showing is the ability to score Jaquari Lewis of Chaminade-Madonna with a rushing touchdown that gave the Lions a 14-point lead in the first quarter / Joe FrisaroNow winners of three straight Chaminade (3-2) showed its primed to make another run at a state championship SBLive offers our five takeaways from Thursday’s convincing victory: The junior has a chance to be a superstar who eventually will be playing on Sundays Cooper was a game changer on both sides of the ball and Cooper broke free for a 57-yard touchdown run to open the scoring Jaquari Lewis added a first-quarter TD run making it 14-0 Perhaps Cooper’s biggest play came at the start of the second half with Norland receiving the second half kickoff Vikings’ quarterback Ennio Yapoor had his pass attempt broken up by Carmani Hall 5-star athlete Derrek Cooper is a junior at Chaminade-Madonna who scored two TDs in a victory against Miami Norland / Joe FrisaroOn the play with Cooper swiping and dashing 23-yards for a touchdown “Big momentum boost and it just went from there,” Jones said we were just ready,” Cooper said of the key turnover Perhaps the biggest surprise in South Florida football has been the emergence of Preston Wright as the Lions’ quarterback The senior transferred into Chaminade after playing last year in Ocala When Tyler Chance went down with an injury in the second game Wright completed 22-of-38 pass attempts for 284 yards and two touchdowns and threw touchdown passes of 26-yards to Denairius Gray (Auburn commit) and 8 yards to Jasen Lopez A humble leader who is being recruited by Ivy League schools Wright praised the effort of his teammates “Defense and offense really pushed each other all week in practice,” Wright said Throw in the direction of Jerrard Smith at your own risk Norland’s senior defensive back had two interceptions on Thursday including a 50-yard return for a touchdown That scoring play at the time trimmed the Vikings’ deficit to 14-13 Smith’s first interception came with Chaminade leading 14-0 and threatening for more Smith picked the ball off near his own end zone But the Lions defense actually allowed only one touchdown Thursday was Chaminade’s best defensive performance of the season One of the standouts was defensive end RJ Alphonse who has effectively rushed the passer in recent games and is listed as having four sacks on the season Defensive end Matthew Pointer also had a big game broke up a fourth down pass near the end zone when the game was still close Darius Smith’s interception sealed the win the Lions’ limited the amount of explosive plays by Yapoor “Our main objective was to keep their quarterback in the pocket,” Alphonse said We were able to make our D-tackles succeed and elevate their game Turnovers and penalties were costly for Norland The Vikings were held without a point in the second half Something to building upon for the Vikings is the combination of Yapoor to receiver Dawson Quarterman In the Vikings’ lone offensive touchdown drive Yapoor had completions of 18 and 41 yards to Quarterman Yapoor capped that drive with a 16-yard TD run Magisterial District Judge Glenn Manns just from the fact that they knew they could do it.” and three in a tough northwest sub-state tournament over Hawley Fosston will play tournament hosts BOLD at 7:30 p.m The difference-maker for Fosston this year has been the players’ emphasis on defense “We pitched the ball really well and played very good defense in our seven games in the tournament,” Hanlon said We did get hot at the plate in a few games but really what carried us through was our defense and that's always what it's been for this group of kids and just a great group of kids that love to play baseball “That's really what it comes down to for us and they've had a lot of success at a lot of different levels but we obviously knew that this group can play baseball.” It's just the way they went about it that might've been the most astonishing as the Hawks were in full control for most of the game Armwood leaned upon its defense and the legs of running back Girard Pringle en route to a 51-20 thrashing of last year's football celebrates a victory over Miami Central on Friday / Jon Santucci / USA TODAY NETWORKThey say the year after losing in a state championship game can somewhat wear on you mentally and the last time Miami Norland faced a Tampa-area team it was Berkeley Prep in the Class 2M state final The Vikings would go on to lose to the Buccaneers leaving folks to wonder how Miami Norland would respond in 2024 Now we know this game against Armwood didn't count towards either team's record but best believe both programs were trying to put on a nice showing in respects to state and national rankings The Hawks are a team many believe have what it takes to win it all in Class 6A and certainly showed why The Vikings are left to wonder once again how they can bounce back from a kickoff classic loss heading into their opener against Miramar on the road There wasn't much doubt that Armwood wouldn't have a solid defense A thunderous performance against a very stout Norland offense has to give the Hawks confidence that they can play against anyone around with UCF commitment Cameron White in the middle patrolling the passing lanes and defensive end Greg Lott coming off the edge If this defense plays like it did Saturday at Traz Powell Stadium Berkeley Prep vs Miami Norland FHSAA 2M Final December 9 but they do bring back the most important piece to it all: Ennio Yapoor Which is why it was a little head scratching how Norland struggled mightily to get much going offensively behind Dade County's all-time leading passer After a season in which the signal caller threw for 4,270 yards 30 touchdowns and rushed for 793 and 12 scores Looking at all of the South Florida powerhouse offenses it felt like this one wouldn't have too many issues right out of the gates but it's hard to ignore the absence of Norland's offense for most of the afternoon Georgia 2025 WR commit Tyler Williams continues to hear from the Hurricanes. Saturday’s 60-44 loss to Miami Norland in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 6A state championship at The Lakeland Center was to win the state championship,” said Cole but that didn’t make this an unsuccessful season We learned so much about what it takes to win at this level but we’re going to approach next season like we left something on the table this time around.” Miami Norland put the game away late in the fourth quarter when its superior size — the Vikings had three players taller than 6-foot-6 while Lake Minneola had no starter taller than 6-foot-2 —became a factor On four-straight possessions midway through the period Miami Norland was able to get to the rim for putback dunks or tip-ins That enabled the Vikings to break open a tight game after trailing 36-35 heading into the fourth quarter Lake Minneola was able to stay close with quickness aggressive defense and ability to beat Miami Norland to open areas on the floor The Hawks attacked the basket for most of the game and led by as many as seven points but couldn’t overcome a scoreless stretch in the fourth when the Vikings found their stride A lot of that was Miami Norland playing on-the-ball basketball and you have to give them credit for that but we also didn’t convert some makeable shots I was pleased with the way we executed our game plan “We just couldn’t get the ball t o fall in the fourth quarter.” Lake Minneola (28-4) got out to an early lead when Carlyle Holder scored on a layup on the game’s opening possession The Hawks tried to attack the basket in the first quarter with mixed results but shot only 27 percent from the field and trailed 13-8 Even more telling was the Vikings’ dominance on the backboards Miami Norland out-rebounded Lake Minneola 8-3 in the opening period and finished with a 41-24 advantage “We had to control the tempo against them and we did that by rebounding the basketball,” said Miami Norland coach Lawton Williams “Our size had to be a factor on the boards they were going to run and that would create big problems for us.” Lake Minneola junior Avery Brown helped the Hawks get back into the game in the second quarter Brown got to the rim with a variety of drives challenging the Vikings’ size and closing out the first half with 14 points the Hawks stepped up their backcourt pressure When Brown ignited the Lake Minneola faithful with a thunderous dunk at the 2-minute mark the Hawks took a 23-18 lead and seemed in control of the game Lake Minneola suffered a devastating blow when Holder injured his right ankle The injury kept Holder on the bench at the start of the second half and even though he played most of the second half “We lost a lot when Carlyle got hurt,” Cole said “We lost a scorer and we lost a lot of quickness on defense It forced us to make adjustments and get away from our game plan some.” Lake Minneola came out and looked to run away from the Vikings but a defensive switch by Miami Norland changed the complexion of the game Williams began to look for someone to neutralize Brown and found his stopper in senior Zachary Johnson who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player holding him scoreless for the final 13 minutes “I asked if anyone could stop (Brown),” Williams said “We weren’t going to change anything we were doing but we needed someone to step up and stop him Zach went out and got the job done and still managed to carry his load of the offense When we’ve asked someone to raise their game Lake Minneola shot 31 percent from the field and was 2-of-19 from behind the 3-point line He and Andrew Mendoza led the team in rebounds with five apiece Miami Norland (27-5) shot 49 percent from the field including a blistering 58 percent in the second half Lake Minneola managed to hit
