BOSTON – A North Andover, Mass. man was sentenced today in federal court in Boston for possessing over 30 firearms and explosives as a convicted felon.
Daniel Medina, 65, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris to 63 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. In December 2024, Medina pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a machine gun, unlawful possession of explosive materials and felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. Sentencing is scheduled for April 3, 2025. In October 2024, Medina was charged by criminal complaint.
Potassium chlorate and aluminum powder – the same flash powder found in the suspected explosive material used in the explosion – were found in the containers.
Medina is prohibited from possessing firearms, ammunition and explosive material due to a 2002 state conviction of assault and battery in Lawrence District Court, for which he was sentenced to two and a half years in jail.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division made the announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by the North Andover Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm of the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.

MA — A small propeller plane was damaged after it made a hard landing at the Lawrence Municipal Airport in North Andover
The Federal Aviation Administration said the nose gear of the plane collapsed following the landing at noon Monday, according to WCVB 5-ABC
Emergency crews were on the scene and the aircraft was spotted off the side of the runway, according to WHDH 7-News

MA — Police are alerting residents about a mail tampering and fraud incident
The North Andover Police Department posted the following on Facebook on Wednesday:
"Mail that was dropped off at the USPS box by 108 Main ST (by Town Hall and TD Bank) on Sunday 2/23 may have been tampered with
A resident’s check that was mailed from that box was subsequently forged to another person and for a whopping for $93,000
Please check with your banks or payees for any mailed checks on or around this time."

(Shutterstock)NORTH ANDOVER — The Planning Board reviewed a traffic monitoring report for the AvalonBay development and continued a public hearing on proposed renovations to North Andover High School’s athletic facilities at its March 18 meeting
Representatives from VHB presented a traffic study for the residential and commercial site at 65–88 High St
The study found traffic volumes were significantly lower than originally estimated in 2019
with no additional mitigation measures required
Board members noted the parking lot appears tight and expressed concern that initial projections did not include commercial traffic
The board also reviewed updates to the athletic fields project at North Andover High School
shared revised plans addressing stormwater management
and lighting impacts on neighboring properties
Revisions include moving a gravel access drive away from wetlands
and updating the lighting plan to comply with dark-sky standards
Concerns were raised about safety netting costs and the environmental impact of lighting and runoff
Board members scheduled a public site visit to gather more input before making a final decision

The Lawrence Police Department received a call at 6:35 p.m
on April 3 from a resident of the 50 Island Street Apartments with a view of the Merrimack River
The caller stated they believed a person was being taken down river by the current
The North Andover Fire Department responded and launched a boat and
recovered Langlais from the river north of the Amazon facility in North Andover
Firefighters estimate that they retrieved Langlais in the Haverhill portion of the Merrimack River
The incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to Tucker’s office
The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
