The Getty Center art museum “activated fire protection measures” due to the threat from the blaze, said Alexandria Sivak, a spokesperson for the J. Paul Getty Trust, in an email early Thursday. Early in the firefight, the Hotel Angeleno was evacuating 121 people due to the fire, according to a front desk worker. The hotel was less than two miles from the site of the fire, on the other side of the 405. Some UCLA students expressed anxiety on social media at news of the fire, although the university was not in an evacuation area. “I don’t even know how I’m supposed to sleep ... I HAVE A QUIZ TOMORROW,” one Reddit user said. The Sepulveda fire was the latest blaze in a nerve-racking week as Southern California headed into a fourth consecutive day of red flag fire weather warnings. The alerts caution that conditions are ripe for fires to ignite and spread rapidly. There have been red flag warnings in some part of Southern California for 14 of the last 17 days. The stretch started Jan. 7, the day the Palisades and Eaton fires began their devastating spread, leveling swaths of Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Thursday will continue to be a day of critical fire weather danger. “Any new fires can grow fast and out of control,” the National Weather Service posted on social media. “Have a plan, especially if you are in a high fire risk area.” Santa Ana winds will strengthen and peak during the day Thursday, weather service meteorologist Ryan Kittell said. The weather service has extended its red flag fire weather warning through Friday at 10 a.m. for much of the counties of Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura. “We’re still in the middle of this extended period of extreme dryness, and we’re looking at this next wind enhancement picking up,” Kittell said. Humidity has dipped below 10%. Peak gusts Thursday were forecast to be a bit stronger than anticipated earlier in some locations. Gusts on Thursday could reach 45 mph in the western San Fernando Valley, Oxnard and the Grapevine section of Interstate 5; 53 mph in Ramona; 54 mph in Acton; 55 mph in Fillmore and Idyllwild; 59 mph in Santa Clarita; 62 mph in Thousand Oaks; 68 mph in Beaumont; and 69 mph in Alpine. (National Weather Service) With the air so dry — and not moistening up overnight — it is a “really concerning period for humidities,” Kittell said. Plants and other fuels are “ready to burn.” Rain is in the forecast for Southern California. Precipitation could start as early as Saturday afternoon and last until Monday night. Rainfall could total nine-tenths of an inch for Covina; nearly three-quarters of an inch for downtown L.A., Long Beach and Santa Clarita; two-thirds of an inch for Redondo Beach; three-fifths of an inch in Fillmore and Canoga Park; and about half an inch in Thousand Oaks and Oxnard. Eleven inches of snow could fall on Wrightwood, and four inches along the Grapevine section of Interstate 5. (National Weather Service) There is a 10% to 20% chance of thunderstorms across the region, which if they materialize over recently burned areas could bring moments of heavy rainfall, potentially resulting in debris flows and other landslide risks. It’s a low risk but something to consider, Kittell said. The storm will most likely “bring us some beneficial rain” and mitigate the fires now burning, Kittell said. But, he added, “it won’t kill the fire weather season. ... It’s not gonna be enough to crush it.” Firefighters were continuing to battle the Hughes fire in northern Los Angeles County on Thursday. The fire started off of Lake Hughes Road just before 11 a.m. Wednesday and quickly prompted evacuation orders in and around Castaic Lake, which by afternoon extended toward Ventura County to the west and near Sandberg to the north. More than 31,000 people were ordered to evacuate, and warnings were issued to 23,000 others. The fire exploded in size near Castaic Lake on Wednesday, and although Santa Ana winds quickly fanned the blaze to 10,000 acres, crews began to gain control by evening thanks to a massive deployment of ground and aerial resources. The fire was 14% contained by 10 p.m. Wednesday. More than 4,000 firefighters and over a dozen water- and retardant-dropping aircraft were responding to the incident. Fire victims seek answers about rebuilding, cleanup timeline “We were able to put in tens of thousands of gallons of retardant on the south side of the fire because the fire was moving to the southwest,” said L.A County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone at a news conference Wednesday in addition to all of those ground resources Around 31,000 residents were under evacuation orders and 23,000 were under evacuation warnings. The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department sent its newly formed Looter Suppression Team to the area to protect evacuated homes. The weather service said winds in the Hughes fire area were expected to increase again Thursday, peaking in the morning and afternoon hours. Marrone noted that the Hughes fire erupted under very different conditions than previous blazes. Although winds were strong on Wednesday, “they were not those 70-, 80-, 90-mph winds that we experienced” on Jan. 7, when the Palisades and Eaton fires ignited. California As firefighters continue to battle multiple major wildfires, The Times has compiled a list of resources to help. In addition, there are now a far larger number of firefighting resources staged in the region. “We have so many resources from Northern California, from the Western United States, international resources,” he said. “The number of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft that are available to us really allow us to attack a fire like this.” Times staff writer Amy Kaufman contributed to this report. 20236 min readThe George Thomas Dream 18The best of Riviera It’s the year of Los Angeles and George Thomas in golf On top of the annual Genesis Invitational at Riviera Open at Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course and the U.S With these three classic designs on display in 2023 I decided to put together a “Dream 18” from them This is a bit like trying to figure out the starting five of an all-time Lakers squad so feel free to yell at me on social media if you disagree One of the most impressive things about Thomas was the variety of his architecture A short par 3 at one of his courses is very different from a short par 3 at another with almost repetition across the 54 holes All three first holes deserve some consideration The hole plays down into one of the property’s trademark canyons and showcases a barranca which turns out to be a consistent theme throughout the day {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-001}} the second at LACC introduces a canyon and a barranca to players The tee shot plays to a fairway that banks from right to left and the Gil Hanse-restored green sits on the other side of the barranca {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-002}} with its front-right tongue and variety of pins Playing over the barranca and up the left side yields a more level lie for the approach {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-003}} The four spot offers perhaps the weakest options for this Dream 18 4 at LACC is a good and dramatic downhill par 3 that plays over the barranca to a green that runs off all sides {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-004}} which was restored by Tom Doak and the Renaissance Golf team They shortened the hole and moved the green closer to the canyon edge {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-005}} The amazing sixth at Riviera narrowly edges out LACC’s fantastic short par 4 The bunker in the middle of this green is a menace during tournament play as evidenced by Tiger’s putt into it this year {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-006}} The seventh at Bel-Air is a wonderful shortish par 4 or take the more conventional route down the right side and deal with a shallow green and a gargantuan bunker {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-007}} A remarkable par 5 that snakes its way through the canyon Drive it short of the barranca cutting across the fairway and favor the right side to approach the green {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-008}} This strong uphill par 4 has one of Riv’s more eccentric and fun greens {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-009}} It’s probably controversial to not pick Riviera here but the 10th at Bel-Air is freaking amazing You take an elevator up to the tee from the ninth green and then hit a 200-yard shot over a canyon to a funky punchbowl green then you walk over a rad suspension bridge {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-010}} downhill reverse-redan par 3 with an epic view of the Los Angeles skyline {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-011}} The approach is difficult from the left—the target is blind Play up the right and you get a look at the hole location and green depth {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-012}} The right half of the fairway falls off so severely that a ball just a foot too far right in the fairway will tumble 20 yards farther right and eventually into rough especially because it lulls you into bailing left and having a really tricky up-and-down that looks benign from the fairway {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-013}} All the trouble lies up the right side of this long par 5 but your only chance at getting home in two requires a tee shot to that side one of the best on a course filled with great greens {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-014}} thanks to its angular shape and a small bump that wreaks havoc on almost every pin {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-015}} The 16th–with its setting among sycamore trees high-pressure shot near the end of the round {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-016}} This stout par 4 returns players to the canyon where the round starts which is perched up and falls off on all sides {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-017}} uphill tee shot followed by the approach to an amphitheater green is tough to beat even if the other option at Bel-Air plays under a suspension bridge {{content-block-george-thomas-dream-18-018}} George Thomas’s greatest skill might have been building par 3s so it’s not surprising to see seven of them in my Dream 18 but I like them too much to leave them out If Riviera were to undertake a smart restoration effort—as LACC and Bel-Air have—I bet the Genesis venue would immediately jump to six-plus holes in my Dream 18 I can only hope to see a Riv restoration in my lifetime George Thomas designed 36 holes at Griffith Park The two courses remain in operation but have very little of Thomas’s work left In looking at an
