The Nassau District Attorney’s Office said that the fight started after Carpio grabbed the girl’s arm and made advances on her
sparking a larger fight between the two groups
When he got back up he punched the 21-year-old victim and then pulled a folding knife with a three-inch blade
[expletive]," he told the victim afterward
admitted that his client had too much to drink that day
but said his client was defending himself and denied that Carpio made advances on the teen
"My client never flirted with this girl
I think the sentence was heartless," he said
"I think the punishment is too much time for the facts of the case."
The defense lawyer said the case should have been tried in another county because the victim’s mother works as a court officer in Nassau County
Toner added that Schwartz should have recused himself because the court officer occasionally provides security for the judge’s courtroom
"The victim’s mother is known to the judge," Toner said
"He should have recused himself in this matter
I’m not accusing him of doing anything improper
but this case should have been removed from Nassau County."
Prosecutors said that the defense team never requested a change of venue or a different judge on the case
"Today’s lengthy prison sentence holds the defendant accountable for the suffering that he caused this victim and his loved ones," District Attorney Anne Donnelly said after the sentencing

DiNapoli's Fiscal Stress Monitoring System
"While it is welcome news that so few school districts across the state have been classified as in fiscal stress
school officials should remain vigilant and carefully consider how their budgeting decisions will affect their long-term fiscal condition and local taxpayers," DiNapoli said
This is the fifth year DiNapoli's office has assessed levels of fiscal stress in school districts
DiNapoli's monitoring system creates an overall fiscal stress score which drives the classification
The scores are based on the evaluation of 674 school districts with fiscal years ending on June 30
The higher a district scores on the assessment
North Bellmore had a score of 28.3 percent
which is up from its score last year of 20
Long Beach was the only other Nassau school district that was listed in distress
Both districts were listed as "susceptible to fiscal stress" based on their scores
The scores are based on financial information submitted as part of each district's ST-3 financial report filed with the State Education Department as of Dec
The announcement does not include scores for the dependent school districts in the "Big Four" cities of Buffalo
Information for these districts will be incorporated into the scoring for their respective cities later this year
The monitoring system does not score New York City
DiNapoli's office recently implemented system enhancements which were developed with direct input from local government and school district officials
The changes provide local officials with more helpful
easy-to-understand information that can help them address specific challenges facing their communities

(Courtesy North Bellmore School District)NORTH BELLMORE
NY — Two administrators in the North Bellmore School District will be taking on new positions for the 2021-22 school year
Martin Avenue Elementary School Principal Leyna Malone will move to the district office as the executive director of pupil personnel services and special education
Replacing Malone as principal will be James O’Brien
the current assistant principal of Saw Mill Road School
Malone came to the district in 2015 as Saw Mill Road’s assistant principal before moving on to Martin Avenue a year later
When she assumes her new position on July 1
she won’t be moving very far as the district’s central office is located at Martin Avenue
she will oversee the special education program as well as the district’s guidance counselor
Malone was part of a team that opened new 8-1-2 classes at the school (eight students
Her goal is to continue to grow the special education program
ensure that all students have access to the same learning opportunity and maintain North Bellmore’s reputation as an inclusive school district
“We deliver an incredible special education program here in North Bellmore,” she said “I’m really looking forward to having an impact on education throughout the district.”
In her five years as principal of Martin Avenue
Malone said she supported teachers with the implementation of Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop

O’Brien is returning to the school where he attended kindergarten
He said he looks to continue the legacy of Malone and her predecessors in building a strong school community and fostering a nurturing environment for students
“I’m definitely excited to work with the staff
the parents and especially the students,” he said
“I look forward to building relationships with the entire Martin Avenue School community.”
O’Brien is in his 20th year in the district
He was hired in 2001 – the same year that Martin Avenue reopened – as a sixth grade teacher at Saw Mill Road after student teaching there
he was able to see the school community from a more global view and better understand the synergy that is created to provide students with great learning experiences
he will leave with many treasured memories and a fondness for the Saw Mill Road community
but is looking forward to the new challenge ahead at Martin Avenue
He wants to bring his knowledge as a classroom teacher and his ability to forge relationships to “enrich the vibrant community that is Martin Avenue School.”
