The first arriving units saw "visible fire from the roof of Great Wall Chinese Restaurant," located in the plaza

The fire was contained to the ventilation and the ceilings of the fire unit and the unit directly adjacent to it and by 10:23 p.m.
The cause is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshall's office
Firefighters thanked the East Haven and Walligford fire departments for providing station coverage during the incident

CT — A 48-year-old New Haven man was charged by North Branford police with animal cruelty
was taken into custody by the New Haven Police Department on an outstanding warrant issued by the North Branford police
Cervantes was charged with Cruelty to Animals following a lengthy and thorough investigation
"We remain steadfast in our commitment to investigate all reports of animal abuse," police wrote
and we will pursue this case to the fullest extent of the law."

Cervantes was held overnight on a $10,000 bond and was arraigned Tuesday in New Haven Superior Court

The North Branford Fire Department posted to Facebook that it was just after 1:45 a.m.
when police notified the North Branford Communications Center that a vehicle was involved in a high-speed collision into the building at 909 Foxon Road
According to Chief of Police James Lovelace
within seconds of an emergency call reporting a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Foxon Road (Route 80) and Forest Road (Route 22)
a North Branford Police officer observed a vehicle that had collided with the North Branford Town Hall
Lovelace said the sole occupant of the vehicle
His identity will be released at a later time
Due to the severity of the crash and extensive damage to the vehicle
the North Branford Fire Department was immediately dispatched to the scene
North Branford fire Rescue 1 and Engine 1 were on the scene in about six minutes
It took firefighters around 10 minutes to extricate the victim
"We extend our sincere gratitude to our dedicated volunteer firefighters
