FOND DU LAC – Spring has a variety of appealing aspects to Fond du Lac
Some of the most-read stories of last month were related to the spring election April 1
which decided the future of local school districts and municipal leadership
April held updates on two properties on the Forest Mall site
with one opening and one getting a new tenant
Here are eight Fond du Lac stories you may have missed in April
April started immediately with a spring election that decided local leadership and four Fond du Lac County school referendums
One of the biggest contested races was Fond du Lac City Council
Keith Heisler and Patrick Mullen kept their seats
the Fond du Lac School District Board of Education met three newcomers: Luke Frame
Oakfield and Waupun each presented operational referendums for the election
but only Waupun Area School District's passed
Local election results explained: Fond du Lac-area election results lead to school board changes, failed referendums
As a result of the Fond du Lac School District referendum failing, the district was the first in the county to decide on budget cuts to address a deficit for next school year
The school district board April 14 unanimously approved five measures to reduce the deficit: changing the middle school schedule
About a week later, preliminary layoff notices went out to those affected
including the president of the local teachers' union
On April 26, a local black bear decided to spend the day hanging out at Rolling Meadows Golf Course
to the shock and disbelief of golf course staff
Department of Agriculture's Wildlife and Fisheries division
they closed several holes and watched the bear from a distance
The bear's chosen activity was to rest in the woods until he moved along on his own by the next day
Fond du Lac's Hardee's location closed last September
there is activity at the site on Johnson Street
Known for its burgers and Frosty ice cream, Wendy's announced its incoming presence to Fond du Lac with new signs in April
This will be the third time the fast-casual chain has come to the city since 1979
The highly anticipated ThedaCare Medical Center-Fond du Lac opened April 16 as a hospital campus equipped to provide all levels of care
and other inpatient and outpatient services
ThedaCare and Froedtert Health first announced the joint venture to build the Fond du Lac hospital in October 2022
and the project broke ground in February 2024 to build the approximately 25,000-square-foot hospital on the site of what was once a long-vacant Younkers store at the Forest Mall
vice president of ThedaCare Medical Centers-Fond du Lac and Oshkosh
has emphasized that the vision of this new health center is to offer a local facility so patients don't have to travel for care
Antonio Godfrey Sr. will continue advocating for local kids after leaving school boardSince Antonio Godfrey Sr.'s time on the Fond du Lac School District Board of Education came to an end in April
he reflected on the last few years and shared his experiences of watching the district improve
navigating in a space that wasn't designed for a Black person originally," he told The Reporter
"I can honestly say it was one of the most rewarding
Godfrey was passionate about advocating for all students
and he said he will continue to do that as a citizen
and — perhaps most importantly — his wife and family
The final COVID-19 five-year anniversary story invited Fond du Lac-area health care professionals to share their experiences of being on the front lines of the pandemic
Agnes Hospital's Emergency Department director and led her team in figuring out how to keep both staff and patients safe
develop treatment plans and still maintain the department's day-to-day operations
The lasting toll on health care workers includes burnout from constant long shifts
and the hospital's Director of Hospital Nursing Resources Lori Cardinal said that staff are still haunted by the loss of life they witnessed
Fond du Lac's Joann fabrics and crafts location announced its closure earlier this year
but did you know about the city's small-business craft stores
and an array of notions and gadgets for knitting and crocheting
and mother-daughter duo Joan Ziegel and Samantha Clark also host classes
and other supplies for all levels and types of sewing and quilting enthusiast
Owner Amanda Bauer-Frisch moved the shop — which used to be called Stitches 'N Tyme in Oakfield — to Fond du Lac last year
she and her team have space to include classes and more

FOND DU LAC COUNTY – As the April 1 spring election approaches
some local school districts are seeking to renew their referendums
Fond du Lac School District approved a referendum question for the April election in December
asking for authorization to exceed the revenue limit by $10 million per year for four years for maintenance
If school referendums fail to get enough votes
school districts would often need to make cuts within their schools
from reducing staff to discontinuing student-centered programs
Here's what to know about other school district referendum questions for this spring in Fond du Lac County
More news: Marian president’s vision is for Fond du Lac to be named alongside Madison as college town
The North Fond du Lac School District approved Jan
15 an operational referendum question for the April 1 ballot that reads as follows:
by $1.9 million for the 2025-2026 school year
by $2.0 million for the 2026-2027 school year
by $2.2 million for the 2027-2028 school year
and by $2.5 million for the 2028-2029 school year
The money would be used to continue and upgrade safety measures
attract and retain teachers and staff with competitive salaries
update instructional materials and other investments to meet state literacy requirements
maintain and expand mental health support for students
continue to adequately serve students with special needs
provide programming to prepare students for the workforce in partnership with local businesses
A previous referendum failed in November by 93 votes
but April's question reduces the requested funding amount by almost $4 million
spent over the course of four years instead of five
an increase of students that brought in increased revenue and the district finding ways to save on costs
such as insurance administrative positions
For more information and updates on public informational meetings, visit nfdlschools.org.
The School District of Oakfield's current operational referendum will come to an end at the conclusion of this school year
and the district will again ask voters to exceed state revenue limits for the next four years:
If voters choose "yes," the school district will be able to continue Advanced Placement and Cooperative Academic Partnership Program classes
recruit and retain teachers and staff with competitive salaries
and keep up with current operational expenses that are affected by inflation
A previous referendum failed in November by 87 votes
but it had asked voters to decide if the school district could exceed state revenue limits to support district operations and maintenance expenses

More news: Winnebago Lutheran Academy in Fond du Lac turns 100 with new, larger campus on the horizon
the Waupun Area School District approved an operational referendum question for the April 1 ballot that reads as follows:
According to a letter sent to district staff and families
the referendum would replace the previous 2022-2024 referendum at $80,000 less as a result of "sound financial management of district finances."

FOND DU LAC – Marian University students started their spring semester this month
it marks the second half of his first academic year
Aaron Sadoff took on the role as Marian's 18th president in June
he's been working toward a goal to help reshape the vision of Fond du Lac and further the university's mission to prepare people best for the world — both with an expectation for high achievement and accountability and by creating an environment where people feel loved and accepted
Sadoff said this has been his favorite job because it blends leadership
all while working with every level of the university
from the Board of Trustees to the students and the Fond du Lac community as a whole
"It's about being involved and trying to really help support and make a difference here," he said
"And not make a difference to the point where you're accelerating who you are
but you're making a difference because you're able to work with people and bring people together."
Sadoff among 2024 People of the Year: Fond du Lac's 2024 People of the Year include hometown heroes, advocates for those in need
Sadoff said he got to this position by being open to opportunities
His history with Marian University includes service on the Marian Board of Trustees
as well as two-time alumnus status with a master's degree and Superintendent Licensure Certificate from the university
but he started out as an educator in Fond du Lac and then Manitowoc
He made his way up to principal of Bessie Allen Middle School in North Fond du Lac
then as North Fond du Lac superintendent for 13 years
during which he helped lead three successful referendums and was honored as the 2019 Wisconsin State Superintendent of the Year
he was involved in the community as a member of several local boards
he figured that while good things were happening
the superintendent position could use a fresh pair of eyes
and he could look for opportunities to further grow his leadership
'What can I do?' And I had heard one time from a comedian
'The best time to leave the stage is when they're still laughing,' right?"
Sadoff went from public education to community philanthropy in 2022 when he became Fond du Lac Area Foundation's executive director
where he learned more about Fond du Lac and how the community members want to support the area
With these two fields of experience under his belt, and his position on the Marian Board of Trustees, he was asked to consider applying for the role of president after Michelle Majewski announced her retirement
and he said one of the coolest things he's found here is regarding the words "servant leadership" and how that philosophy is carried out at Marian
I see it from our relationship with the (Congregation of Sisters of St
Marian started as Marian College in 1936 because the sisters of the Congregation of Sisters of St
weren't allowed to student teach in public schools while wearing religious habits
per Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction rules
Sisters Aloysia Leickem and Vera Naber petitioned to create their own college
and Marian has grown ever since in its footprint
all under continued sponsorship of the congregation
The design of the campus includes circular motifs to the buildings
a nod to spirituality and the cyclical nature of things
about love and how it continues," Sadoff said
An example is Dorcas Chapel
named after a saint known for helping others: the building resembles a spool of thread with a needle at the top
as some of her acts included sewing clothes for the poor
references the school's Catholic tradition
but is also a sign of its welcoming nature to students and community members of all faith backgrounds
supporting more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors — as well as graduate and licensing programs — including nursing
social work and sports in addition to its original roots in education studies
"I have a renewed vision of what Fond du Lac is because I get to see it through all these students that are from somewhere else
Sadoff's vision for the future includes Fond du Lac as a university townFrom the beginning of his career here
Sadoff has had a vision of transforming Fond du Lac into a university town
building up student life within the campus and engaging the community beyond campus
It's not a matter of anything being broken
but rather a realm of opportunities to take advantage of
"If you want to know what you should do next
He said he's excited to start implementing the university's strategic plan
focusing on the cornerstones of financial stability
Next will be a facilities plan that will seek community input for what Marian should build next and how it should evolve
While Marian built a new science building in 2018 and some other building improvements are under way
"I think what I'm most excited about is the momentum that we see
where people start to figure out that Marian is part of Fond du Lac
have you been to this basketball game?' or
'Did you get a Sabre T-shirt?'" Sadoff said
'What are the top college towns in Wisconsin?' they'll say Madison and Fond du Lac
There are opportunities to work with institutions like the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts for the local arts scene and the Blue Line Family Ice Center for sports
The more Marian can get out into the community
support it and have the community be a part of Marian
He said he's still blessed to be involved in the community
including on the Envision Greater Fond du Lac board and
the SSM Health community board to represent Marian and say
"We're here to make things better," he said

FOND DU LAC (WLUK) -- A North Fond du Lac man was arrested after leading authorities on a chase in a stolen rental vehicle
the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen vehicle from a local rental business
The rental company provided the name of the suspect and a potential address where the vehicle might be located
The individual was known to law enforcement due to a previous high-speed pursuit and threats against law enforcement
and had been flagged as an "Officer Safety Risk."
Multiple deputies from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office
along with officers from the North Fond du Lac Police Department
responded to the address in an effort to recover the stolen vehicle and apprehend the suspect but the vehicle was not there
the rental company was able to ping the vehicle's location since it had officially been reported stolen
The vehicle was initially reported traveling northbound on County Highway V near Highway 151
A police officer from the city of Fond du Lac located the vehicle and began to follow it southbound on County Highway V
awaiting backup to intervene if the suspect attempted to flee and due to the suspect prior history with threats/battery to law enforcement

the North Fond du Lac sixth grade boys recreational baseball team went undefeated this summer - a perfect 24-0
The success of the program didn't happen overnight
of course; its accomplishment comes nearly a decade in the making for the up-and-coming Orioles
"The real story of our team is fundamental development over the past seven years," said manager Daniel Baldauf
"We start our offseason in January at an indoor facility made available to us by Jim and Sarah Price
This is important to understand as without this option we cannot begin (training) until the gym frees up for us in March at the school district
The boys work very hard on hitting and pitching twice per week
shows that not one or two kids are hitting
The pitchers average 1.8 strikeouts per inning with eight players sharing the workload
and we are developing two more for future use."
to the rec league program instead of opting to play for other area travel league clubs
"The commitment level of the team is unmatched in the rec ball world
and we wanted to develop the program this way as we were seeing talent get lost due to many players opting for travel ball," Baldauf said
"Oftentimes this leaves players with greater fundamental growth behind due to financial obligations or time constraints of the family
Our kids were presented the program seven years ago and they committed to the work we put in to develop their skills
We have three players on our team that play up a league
The key to success for any team can be attributed to a quality coaching staff
Baldauf credited how there are plenty of additional hands on deck to help share the workload
has been with me since tee-ball and is the rock of our pregame motivation; He has a great rapport with all of our boys," Baldauf said
is fantastic at helping me break down mechanics
developing PDP`s (Prospect Development Pipelines) for each player along with keeping the kids upbeat and positive
I also have another two coaches - Matt Merwin and Andy Rushing - that share time with me
that helps me run the dugout and equipment along with running stations for practice developments."
said it was a special summer for everyone involved
"The baseball season for our sixth graders was really special because these young men put the time and effort in during the winter and spring months to get prepared," Logan said
"Our team is not only blessed to have a group of kids that are coachable and hungry to win but are also blessed to have a great coaching staff who put countless hours in the off season - getting these boys ready both physically and mentally ready for the competitive summer season
and a fan of watching solid fundamental baseball!"
Highlights from the boys' undefeated season include:
Baldauf noted the depth of the team's pitching staff in the Dual County tournament after using six pitchers the Monday night after the previous Oakfield tournament
"Laconia and NFDL are always hard-fought games with much respect for each other's programs," Baldauf said
"The crowd size was unmatched at Village Park
at least in the nine years since I have been involved
The boys fought hard against a rallying Laconia team
led by our solid pitching performance and outstanding defensive plays
We had 12 all-stars that day with contributions either in the field
It is hard to single out players as they all played their respective role in a true team effort
That game will be remembered by many in our community as it completed an undefeated season and a league championship against our rivals (who run) a very highly respected program."
said going undefeated was "one of the greatest feelings" he's ever had
and I was able to see my friends very happy as it was the first tournament we won this season."
Whittaker also said he enjoyed the coaching he received
Coach Dan (Baldauf) was a great coach that helped me if I was doing something wrong and helped me get better
Coach (Justin) Bader also gave me confidence because he warmed up with me before the games and during games we would have a special handshake; he would talk to me and make me laugh which helped give me confidence and calmed my nerves."
