In order to accommodate tourists during the holiday weekend, the National Parks Service has announced it will temporarily open the north gate of Crater Lake National Park
The entrance has been closed due to the Middle Fork Fire which has burned over 5,000 acres in the northwest corner of the park
Officials say the closure is necessary to allow firefighters to conduct hazard reduction work
Crater Lake National Park has remained open
and there are no current evacuation orders for the Middle Fork Fire
the Park Service says this may change at any time
The north gates will open beginning at 7 a.m
Park Officials estimate wait times of up to two hours to enter the park at either the North or South entrances over the holiday weekend
the road will once again be closed from North Junction to the park boundary
Meanwhile, construction work has closed a portion of the park’s East Rim Drive
meaning it’s not currently possible to drive around the lake
The roadway remains open up to the closure points for “out-and-back” travel

MBTA General Manager Phil Eng said agency officials pushed to speed up deployment of fare gates at South Station and Back Bay Station, which will complement similar technology in place at North Station. The gates are designed to ensure that passengers are paid up before they board trains
Officials first described plans for fare gates at those three stations as far back as 2017
we were informed that the installation of fare gates at Back Bay and South Stations could not start until 2026 due to the private development projects at both locations
The construction footprints prevented us from installing the gates and paths of travel in accordance with building codes
and we worked with the developers to accelerate the schedule for installing fare gates," Eng said in a statement
the installation work gets underway at South Station
the fare gates will be operational in the fall
Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro on Tuesday published a three-page letter to Eng calling for renewed focus on improving commuter rail fare collection, and describing the scale of uncollected fares as "greatly understated over the years."
Eng replied that the letter "does not capture all of our efforts" regarding commuter rail fare collection. He pointed out that commuter rail fare revenue has increased significantly over the past three years, as have scans of mobile mTickets by conductors.
"The complexities and significant costs associated with installing fare gates at 140 outdoor Commuter Rail platforms can not be overstated. Such an effort would require the MBTA to prioritize fare gates over critical maintenance and infrastructure needs directly associated with the delivery of safe and reliable service," he said. "Introducing fare gates at targeted, strategic locations is a far more effective solution."

Explore Finding Your Roots: Season 11Discover the guests and stories featured in the eleventh season of "Finding Your Roots."
Welcome to "Finding Your Roots."
we'll explore the family trees of actor Sheryl Lee Ralph
meeting ancestors who made incredible journeys from slavery to freedom
GATES: You descend from a free person of color
GATES: While DNA experts utilize the latest advances in genetic analysis to reveal secrets that have lain hidden for generations
And we've compiled everything into a Book of Life
Lonnie and Sheryl grew up longing to learn about their enslaved ancestors
they'll hear stories that most of us can never hear
stories that will take them deep into the past
challenging their preconceptions and inspiring them to see themselves in entirely new ways
GATES: Sheryl Lee Ralph is living proof that dreams can come true
The exuberant actor with the golden voice spent four decades in Hollywood searching like so many other African Americans for roles that matched her talents
"Abbott Elementary" and won her first Emmy at the age of 65
but Sheryl had an advantage from the start
Growing up in New York she made frequent trips to her mother's native Jamaica
where she saw firsthand just how much Black people could accomplish
I was always seeing Black people in the headlines doing amazing things
So when I would come back to the United States and you would have a teacher or somebody tell you about what you couldn't do
you don't know what Black people can do."
GATES: This sense of confidence would fuel Sheryl's career
but not before it created a bit of conflict in her own home
yet she found herself drawn to the stage and won a lead role in a play during her first year
An accomplishment that did not exactly please her mother
It was a play called "The Soft Touch," and
And so I figured I should tell my parents that I got the lead
What you mean to tell me you're going to be an actress
You're going to spend your life with those fake and phony people
You're going to waste our hard-earned money
'til your good is better and your better best
GATES: Eventually Sheryl's parents would embrace her ambition
but it would take much longer for the entertainment industry to do the same thing
Sheryl's only regret is that her parents weren't here to see it
RALPH: I know that their spirit is still with me
your parents are working their magic from heaven for you girl
RALPH: As they say in Jamaica "Wheel around and come again."
GATES: My second guest is historian Lonnie Bunch
the creative genius behind the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington
He grew up in New Jersey where his parents were school teachers
but all four of his grandparents were from the Jim Crow South
A journey that taught young Lonnie an enduring lesson
my father was the only driver in those days
and I remember he pulled over 'cause he was tired
BUNCH: And that notion that "this is my America too," has always shaped how I thought about that
GATES: Lonnie not only heeded his father's words
He earned a master's degree in history
he began to doubt the choice he'd made
but I also realized that as much as I loved research and scholarship and I always thought that would always be the heart of who I am
I also love the notion of really making history accessible
I sort of came to the sense that history was too important to be in the hands of historians
and so this was a way to sort of share that love with the broadest possible audience
I think historians talk powerfully among themselves about why history matters
BUNCH: But they don't tell the public that
and they expect the public to learn and to say
let the public understand how you do the work you do
because basically what you're saying is
here's the reservoir of possibility that history gives them
GATES: Lonnie's vision would yield spectacular results
when he was appointed the first director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture
Yet he proceeded to create a dazzling institution
One of the most visited museums in the entire United States
Lonnie was guided by a simple desire to honor his ancestors
BUNCH: That's what really gave me strength going through it
even though I didn't know a lot about my grandfather or my grandparents on both sides
that maybe it might not help me understand my family
but it'll help other people understand their families and theirselves
BUNCH: And so that's what really sort of motivated me to basically say
One is that America will always have to confront its tortured racial past 'cause that'll be on the National Mall
it'll be a place where people can come in and dip into that reservoir and say
GATES: My two guests share a common thread
knowing that their roots laid to the South
It was time to explore those roots in detail
I started with Sheryl Lee Ralph and with her paternal grandfather George Ralph
George was born in 1902 on a farm in Gates County
But although George left his past behind it lingered on in Sheryl's imagination
Did your grandfather talk much about growing up on a farm
But I knew they did because when we would get in the car
there used to be a time when you would get in your car at night..
RALPH: And we would always end up on this farm
It was wonderful to wake up to the food that smelled so amazing
I hated the bathroom because there was none
And you'd have to dump it out in the mornings
But that's why I think I only did that three times
Sheryl has deep roots in and around the farm that she remembers so well
and they contain a pair of truly compelling stories
The first begins with the 1880 census for North Carolina
where we found the listing for Sheryl's great-great-grandparents
Both were born over a decade before emancipation
GATES: Have you given much thought to your enslaved ancestors
because all of that made a difference at that time
GATES: We wanted to answer Sheryl's questions
but there was a huge obstacle in front of us
Enslaved people almost never were listed by name in federal records
which has created what genealogists call "a brick wall" a barrier beyond which there is often no paper trail
One of the only ways to break through this wall is to search the records of enslavers
hoping to find the names of the people they owned and the documents they left behind
And since some formerly enslaved people took the surnames of their former owners after they were freed
we began looking for any White farmers in Gates County
with the same surname as Sheryl's ancestors
this is what's called a slave schedule
A portion of the census that listed enslaved persons not by name
This particular schedule was recorded for that man
And we believe that the 6-year-old boy there is
GATES: And we also think that it's possible that the 40-year-old woman..
GATES: And the 36-year-old man were Timothy's parents
GATES: Your third great-grandparents listed there as nameless marks
RALPH: And who knows where they were after that
we have no idea what happened to Timothy's parents after the Civil War
But Timothy himself was roughly 10 years old when slavery was abolished
he went back to work for the man who had owned him
we found Timothy living in David Benton's household listed as a farm laborer
Digging deeper we saw that by 1880 Timothy had married and started a family
GATES: There's your great-great-grandfather living with his wife
who is your great-great-grandmother Easter
RALPH: They're living right next door to each other
RALPH: So he's been with this man his..
GATES: So this suggests some kind of relationship
GATES: Which your ancestor chose to maintain willingly
an enormous capacity for forgiveness on your ancestors
"Just let Black people lead," because you know what
RALPH: They're always gonna be kind to you
and they're always gonna make sure you get fed
GATES: Happily Sheryl's ancestors wouldn't remain on David Benton's land forever
Timothy purchased a small farm securing a measure of prosperity that he and Easter would leave to their children
And the couple left something else behind as well
it's wonderful to have a picture to know of those who they were
and now knowing what I really do know about them
It's interesting they're different shades
RALPH: They always say that her shade is definitely the shade of slavery
that one of the things that was truly taken away from us because of slavery was our color
RALPH: And I can see that it's a bit of hers has been erased
GATES: Turning from the Bentons to Sheryl's direct paternal line
we were able to identify another of her great-great-grandparents
likely in the same county where Sheryl's Benton ancestors were enslaved
But George's life was fundamentally different from theirs
We found him in the 1860 census for North Carolina
when I look at my family as far back as I can look
RALPH: I always see them striving towards something
RALPH: And we've been carrying it with us..
GATES: We wanted to learn how George became free and found a clue by turning back to the 1860 census
That means you had two generations in your family that was free before the Civil War
GATES: That's two generations who were free
GATES: This story was about to take a twist
they still had to make their way in a world that did not see them as equals
We found an apprenticeship agreement that was filed with a North Carolina court when Sheryl's great-great-grandfather George was roughly 10 years old
It lays out the terms under which he was to go to work for a White farmer named Jordan Parker
Jordan Parker doth promise and agree that he will teach and instruct
or cause to be taught and instructed in the art and mystery of farming
And that he will constantly find and provide for the said apprentice during the time aforesaid."
RALPH: It would be nice if there was compensation of the financial side so that after you learn something
you might be able to afford to set yourself up and move even further along
under the terms of his apprenticeship George was to work without pay
At the time North Carolina's courts were routinely given the names of children so that local farmers could bid for their services
The system was ostensibly designed to prevent orphans and impoverished youth from burdening the state
But it was also used to exploit the free Black population
George's agreement contains a line that has been crossed out
an act that makes its intent patently clear
The law required White apprentices to be taught to read and write and cypher
GATES: The state created an exemption for children of color
and perhaps most impressively somehow found a way to obtain an education in his old age
An accomplishment that filled Sheryl with pride
and I come from people who never gave up and kept right on
And they plant the seeds that are still growing now
first learned about his southern roots through childhood trips to a family farm
Johnny Boone and Flossie Anderson grew cotton in Woodland
Lonnie visited them almost every summer without ever quite fitting in
I'd only read about farms in schools so suddenly
But I realized that it wasn't romantic
one of my strongest members is being 14 or 15 going down to
And so got up that first morning and all these people had on hats and overalls
so I had my nice jeans with a crease and my Adidas sneakers
I can't believe how long this is and I look up
I'm not even a third of way down the row
he wasn't the first in his family to see the value of an education
Jesse came of age in North Carolina during the rise of Jim Crow
a wave of laws were legalizing segregation in his state
restricting the rights of Black people and limiting their opportunities
especially the opportunity to get a public school education
the following committeemen were appointed Woodland number one
GATES: Your great-grandfather was appointed to the school committee for his local school for Black students
I'm stunned by that because I've never heard anybody say anything other than he was a farmer
And a very important member of his community
Jesse was responsible for the care of his local schools and the hiring of their teachers
It was an extremely challenging job in no small part because many of Jesse's fellow White citizens had very different ideas about who should be doing it
BUNCH: "We urged the appointment of White committeemen for each colored school in Bertie County
We urged the complete taking charge by White men of every public agency in the county
The school committeemen really spend the school's money
The White people raise the school's funds
The White people demand to know what goes with their taxes
They're getting very sore over having any of it educate the Negro
White men should supervise the spending of the taxes
give us none but White committeemen for every school."
BUNCH: In some ways what it does is make something that
how dare you spend any money for those folks unless we control it
GATES: This article did not represent an isolated opinion
heavily armed bands of White supremacists had besieged Wilmington
North Carolina murdering Black people and burning down their businesses
So what do you think Jesse was thinking when he joined that school board
is the courage and the sense of willingness to sacrifice for the greater good
BUNCH: You had to know that you were putting yourself and your family at risk
the notion of staying below the firing line
BUNCH: Yet here is somebody stepping above it
BUNCH: And I just can't imagine what courage that took
I wish I could hear the conversations he and his wife had about these choices that he would make
Jesse was appointed to the committee for a term of two years
Jim Crow was firmly entrenched in North Carolina
And it seems that Jesse never had the opportunity to serve again
Jesse purchased 75 acres of land and made the most of them
your grandparents still owned property from that very purchase
So maybe I should have been a better chopper then
I'm just trying to get my head around what it would take to believe you could do that
I could see though that's also why you're a leader because you're trying to lead to help people understand how important education is
how important it's to own your own land
GATES: Can you imagine what Jesse would've thought knowing he was buying something that would shape his family for generations
there's a part of me that hopes he had that vision
BUNCH: Of recognizing that what he was going to do was to touch people yet unborn
BUNCH: Because I think that clearly the way he thought about education
he was really recognizing that he could change the trajectory of a family..
we began to explore her mother's Jamaican roots
starting with Sheryl's great-great-grandfather
Sheryl told me that she knew she had McClymont ancestors
but that her mother had always been hesitant to discuss them
We set out to learn why and found a clue in James' baptismal record
It describes him as being a "mestee," a Jamaican term for a person who was mixed race
This led us to the estate records of James' father
where we saw that this family was much more complicated than it first seemed
RALPH: "Do make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament
It is my will and desire that each of my four children be sent to school and taught to read and write
that each of them receive 20 pounds currency per annum every year."
GATES: And you see how your third great-grandfather Hugh
And we found no evidence that he was an enslaver
which meant he had a sizable estate when he died
and he used it to take care of his mixed-race children
roughly three years after slavery was abolished in Jamaica
It indicates that James' mother was a woman named Mary Robinson
And we don't know how she met James' father Hugh
or whether she was ever enslaved before meeting him
All we could say for certain is that when Hugh drafted his will
So do you think Mary and Hugh ever married
RALPH: "Hugh McClymont and Mary Robinson married by license on the 21st day of September 1837."
GATES: Your third great-grandfather and mixed-race third great-grandmother got married
I don't know why your mom didn't wanna say his name
RALPH: I think it's because she did not know this side of her own story
GATES: We had one more surprise for Sheryl
Turning back to Hugh McClymont's estate records
we saw that he was determined to make sure that his wife was secure even after his death
RALPH: "It is my will and desire that my affectionate wife
and before named children shall have my property named Ginger Hall."
GATES: Hugh left Mary and their four children
Hugh was making more than just a symbolic gesture
He was giving his wife independence and status in a post-slavery Jamaica
GATES: Have you ever heard of a story like this before
GATES: Hugh McClymont passed away sometime before 1845
We know this because Mary remarried that same year to a formerly enslaved man named Adam Saunders
We're not sure when Mary herself died
"Might as well try..." RALPH: "Try both sides of it."
you keep blowing my mind because like you said
We don't hear these stories like this
GATES: We'd already traced Lonnie Bunch's maternal roots back to his great-grandfather
whose heroic service to the Black community had somehow been forgotten in the passage of time
we came to two people whose entire lives had been forgotten
you just met your great-great-grandparents whose names were Washington Anderson and Mariah Lassiter
that's 205 years ago in Hertford County
Mariah was born around 1833 also in Hertford County
GATES: Washington and Mariah were both born decades before the Civil War
which meant that they were likely born into slavery to learn more about their lives
we searched the records of slave owners who shared their surname just as we'd done with Sheryl Lee Ralph's ancestors
We found a will from the year 1861 filed by a White planter named John A
Anderson of the county of Hertford in the state of North Carolina do make this my last will and testament
and Washington are working off at the carpenter trade
GATES: There is your great-great-grandfather Washington
beyond a doubt in the will mentioned by the name of his enslaver John Anderson
So we know his name and that he was a carpenter
GATES: So this particular skill was not passed down
His owner's will tells us that he did not work on his owner's plantation
which suggests that he may have been hired out to other White people in the area who wanted to pay his owner for his carpentry work
and it may have given Washington more freedom than most enslaved people had
but it also meant that he was likely separated from his wife and children
can you imagine being in Washington's shoes
and being sent to work away from your wife and children
did that being away from the family still give him a little freedom to go see the family
BUNCH: And I'd love to know the other side of it is how is somebody who owns people
is it really that you can reduce them so much to being so different than who you are
that it doesn't matter that they're
does something tap you on the shoulder and say
GATES: If John Anderson had qualms about owning human beings
they do not appear in any surviving documents
BUNCH: "I further wish and desire that my executors aforesaid said
shall sell either privately or publicly the said two Negroes at any time
that they'll be able to get a fair price
even if they keep them on hire for some year or two."
you give him money and you can just be sold
about two months after the start of the Civil War
By that time Washington and his wife Mariah
and now suddenly their future was up in the air
So what do you think happened to your ancestor
my hope is that the war disrupts things and allows them to sort of find their freedom
my fear is that they still might have been sold
And then the struggle of trying to reunite with your family at some point..
BUNCH: ...would've been the big challenge
This is part of the probate record filed by the estate of John Anderson in Hertford County
would you please read that transcribed section
BUNCH: "Account of sale of the property of John A
trying to understand what it must have felt like
he worked for a period of time for this owner
but suddenly realize when push comes to shove
does it make it more difficult for him to maintain a family
it's real clear that you don't control your own destiny
GATES: Washington was purchased by a man named William Watson Mitchell
whose plantation was located about 20 miles from Anderson's
a considerable distance to travel at that time
So Washington's family was likely broken apart by the sale
afflicted many enslaved people but we were able to show Lonnie something that personalized his ancestor's experience
That is a man who owned your great-great-grandfather
Washington would've seen this man every day and would've known that William also had the power to sell him again at any moment
even though I know so much about slavery and the system
somehow seeing it affecting my family directly
how are you not realize that why worry about anything
GATES: There is a grace note to this story
Roughly four years after Washington was purchased by Mitchell
slavery was abolished in the United States
we saw that Lonnie's family was reunited in freedom
this census also shows that although Washington and Mariah were illiterate
their youngest children had learned to read and write
What do you make of your ancestors after seeing everything that they went through and accomplished
BUNCH: I wish I was as strong as they were
I think the most powerful thing that this talks to me about is how do you believe when you shouldn't believe
How do you go forward when you get sold away
BUNCH: How do you ensure that you can't read
BUNCH: To make sure at least your youngest children
GATES: Because not everybody felt that way
and what it tells me is I want my granddaughter to know that she's got an obligation to help fulfill the dreams they started to allow us to have
BUNCH: You're gonna make me start crying now
GATES: The paper trail had now run out for each of my guests
it was time to show them their full family trees
filled with names they'd never heard before
Offering the chance to see how their own lives were part of a larger family story
when you were struggling trying to figure out how to believe that you could move forward
GATES: My time with my guests was running out
but I still had a surprise for Sheryl when we compared her DNA to that of others who'd been in the series
Evidence of a distant cousin she never knew she had
Jackson share a long stretch of DNA on their 16th chromosomes
This means that they have a common ancestor somewhere in their family trees
That's the end of our journey with Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lonnie Bunch
Join me next time when we unlock the secrets of the past for new guests on another episode of "Finding Your Roots."

North Marion football will officially enter the Jeremiaha Gates era
In front of him lays a path to redeeming the Colts from a 1-9 season
The opportunity is a homecoming of sorts for the first-time head coach
His mother's side of the family is from the Citra area
"North Marion is a place where a lot of my family graduated from," Gates said
"I think everyone from my mother's side graduated from North Marion
North Marion would be the place I was going to watch."
Gates didn't have the "love at first sight" moment as some football players have had
Being a quarterback on flag football teams as a young player gave him a foundation
but he didn't play organized ball until the seventh grade
he learned the game in a crash course fashion
and quarterback during his state championship-winning career at Trinity Catholic
"Not actually having a position caused me to learn the entire game so that the game would slow down for me at any position," said Gates
who went on to play running back at FCS Samford University in Alabama
and it made me look better than I actually was
I started becoming a coach before I became a coach."
Gates's desire to coach football was born out of the relationship he built with the staff at Samford
Seeing the way they molded him made him want to do the same
"If I can give the information that I've accumulated over the years back to a kid before I got it
their chance of success will be a lot quicker," Gates said
His coaching journey began as a graduate assistant at Concord University in West Virginia
He spent the following year coaching receivers at Florida Tech
and it led to an opportunity of a lifetime: playing professional football in Germany
this time as a high school assistant at Belleview under coach Michael Kelly
he was defensive coordinator with Trinity Catholic
Gates picked up more knowledge as he took advantage
He learned how to get the most out of his players from SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee
Coastal Carolina offensive coordinator Travis Trickett taught him the ins and outs of reading a box in Gus Malzahn’s RPO system
SMU assistant coach Garrin Justice taught him line play
"I got blessed to run into a lot of great coaches," Gates said
"I've had a lot of good mentors as a coach."
His days as a running back have shaped how he wants his teams to approach the game
Gates and his staff want to keep it simple and play with intensity
The first year after a coaching change is all about laying a foundation
Those first bricks are used to pave the path for the Colts to become a team no one wants to play
As his team tries to create that reputation
"Being able to come back to Marion County and take a program like North Marion
a historically prominent powerhouse in central Florida
and be chosen as the one to get the program back in the direction in which Colt country is used to happen," Gates said
and I would have been honored to take those jobs

The two buildings will rise from a rather unusual mid-block property situated off an L-shaped bend of Gates Avenue
Further complicating the lot is its subdivision into two parcels
with Parcel B taking up the site’s southern corner and Parcel A snaking around it in an L-shape into the property’s interior
Each of the buildings will rise 38 feet to the main roof, 42 feet to the parapet, and 47 feet to the top of the bulkheads, which will lead to roof deck that will likely open upon sweeping skyline views
Each structure will feature a single-car garage at the ground level and balconies overlooking the rear yard
which is reinforced with a retaining wall at the steeply sloped portion
The Parcel A building, which will face the street with its narrow elevation, will span 2,265 square feet. Construction costs are specified at $375,000
lending a total of around $166 per interior square foot
Permits allocate $320,000 toward general construction
The Parcel B building, which will face the street with its broad side, will span 3,500 square feet and will feature an elevator. Construction costs are indicated at $488,000
lending a total of around $139 per interior square foot
Permits allot $425,000 toward general construction
Development at the eastern corner of Silverwood Street and Gates Street
Development at the eastern corner of Silverwood Street and Gates Street after redevelopment
the surrounding area was comprised chiefly of two-story rowhomes
many with front yards and deep covered porches; however
some intriguing architectural additions took place on the surrounding blocks in recent years
an exquisite yet dilapidated Neo-Gothic church structure just down the block to the east
at the eastern corner of Silverwood and Gates streets
was renovated into an ostentations edifice with gratuitous balustrades
and an ostentatious double-height Neoclassical gable grafted onto the Neo-Gothic facade
preservation and restoration of the original structure was a very welcome advent
just to the south of the 250 Gates Street proposal
a series of eclectic four-story townhouses was assembled
Postmodern manner with blue and brown siding facades somewhat resemblant of Seaside
the historicist flair of the buildings adds color
the building pair at 250 Gates Avenue will add yet more flavor to the block
is distinctly contemporary yet offers just enough in the way of its material palette to give a nod to the prewar context
Being located on a cul-de-sac off the main local through streets
the buildings will reveal themselves to the casual pedestrian as a tucked-away surprise rather than dominating structures on a major thoroughfare
The surrounding area is awash with parks and green space
with Germany Hill and Gorgas Park both situated within a five-minute walk to the west and northeast
situated next to the Schuylkill River Trail
and the Manayunk station sits within an 18-minute walk to the south

The new Salik roads are in the Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road and the second in Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street
The RTA expects the Business Bay Crossing gate to assist in improving traffic congestion by 12-15 per cent on Al Khail Road
reducing traffic volume by 10-16 per cent on Al Rabat Street
and redistributing traffic to Al Maktoum and Al Garhoud bridges and Ras Al Khor Street
The Al Safa South gate aims to reduce right-turn traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Meydan Street by 15 per cent and improve traffic flow on Financial Centre
Drivers will only be charged once if they cross both the Al Safa South and Al Safa North gates in less than an hour
The new gates are powered by solar energy in a first for Salik.
The locations have reportedly been selected based on extensive traffic movement studies by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The authority has been expanding roadworks across the city over the last few months to accomodate increasing traffic caused by the growing population.

Although traveling through SEA Airport may seem daunting at first
the terminal is small enough that you can easily get to where you are going in just two to five minutes
Here’s a guide on how to navigate the airport on the SEA Underground trains
All airlines at SEA Airport are connected and easy to access after you pass through security checkpoints
you won’t have to re-enter TSA screening and you can go directly to your next flight. If you're arriving and departing on the same airline
your gates should be relatively close to each other
See the list at the bottom of the page for airlines and their gates.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) consists of one terminal with six concourses
Every gate can be accessed with the N and S Concourse Train Stations
or monitor the onboard instructions on the train (in several different languages) to get to where you are going.
There are 8 languages on the trains' digital signage to help support our passengers to know where they need to go Arabic
which stop is next and other helpful information
There is a Terminal Shuttle train also known as the Yellow Loop
and S Gates are all in the South End of the terminal
Almost every international airline operates out of the S Gates or is on the south end of the terminal
and C Gates are all in the North End of the terminal
This loop serves most Alaska Airline flights operating out of C
Locations can change, so remember to double-check your flight and its gate against your boarding pass or the screens in the terminal, Download the FlySEA App to help you navigate the terminal!

Just shy of marking its fifth decade of service
the North Satellite is stepping into the light -- literally and figuratively
Just in time to serve passengers returning to travel
the fully modernized facility adds new gates
and sustainability features like the use of collected rainfall
Passengers and media took the first peek today at a phased opening that modernizes and renovates the original building
“The updated North Satellite is going to come as a surprise to long-time travelers
What was once dimly lit with low ceilings and few options is now bright
and welcoming,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins
"It’s so nice that you might arrive a little early to enjoy the art
And the whole experience celebrates the Pacific Northwest and our spectacular surroundings.”
One of the most dramatic reveals of today’s early two-gate opening is the immersive art Boundary that welcomes every traveler as they ascend from the satellite train level
and stretching 85 feet across (about the wingspan of a Boeing 737)
this sculpture is a life-sized version of the expanding root structure of an old-growth Western Red Cedar
"Thanks to the creativity and vision of Northwest artists
the new North Satellite is filled with meaningful and memorable art that fits in well with this spectacular new facility,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Peter Steinbrueck
“We are working to return the Port of Seattle to its leadership position among ports as an acclaimed regional arts and cultural center
Supporting local artists and public art has never been more important than now
and essential to advancing economic opportunity as part of the Port's COVID-19 equitable economic recovery strategy," said Steinbrueck
The full renovation and upgrade project reduces crowding
Increasing the facility’s capacity from 12 to 20 gates
nearly doubling the square footage of operational space
and tripling the amount of dining and retail offerings means more space to relax or discover something new
New facilities dramatically upgrade the passenger experience with details like enhanced Wi-Fi and 100 percent built-in seat chargers
as well as accessibility improvements like adult changing tables and a fully integrated pet relief area
“We are excited to provide our passengers with a world-class travel experience at the new North Satellite concourse,” said Shane Jones
vice president of Real Estate and Airport Development
and thoughtful experience in a space that also showcases our Northwest roots in our hometown hub is now more important than ever before.”
Funding for the project comes from a combination of airline fees
The estimated cost for the Port’s portion of the project is $710 million
All Port of Seattle construction projects support an average of 1,300 full and part-time employees per month
the Port and construction partners worked together to keep workers safely employed
The Port commits to ensuring that construction investments create opportunity everywhere
especially in underrepresented communities
See how Port construction projects and partnerships with local labor and community groups create career pathways for local workers.
The original North Satellite opened on June 25
resulting in the need to upgrade the facility for modern travelers
The Port and Alaska Airlines opened Phase I of the project in 2019 with eight gates and a flagship Alaska Airlines lounge
Our commitment is to be the greenest and most energy efficient Port in North America
We designed and constructed a building that satisfies our passengers' needs while emphasizing sustainability
As a result of focusing on energy efficiency
the North Satellite is one of the most sustainable projects in the airport’s history and is expected to achieve LEED Silver Certification
The North Satellite project brings 10 new pieces of museum-quality art to the airport
featuring local and nationally acclaimed artists reflecting the Pacific Northwest’s diverse environment

This post is an edited version of a note sent to staff
It is with deep sadness that I write to share the news that our “north star,” Bill Gates Sr.
September 14 at home surrounded by family.
It is no overstatement to say that without Bill Sr
there would be no Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as we know it today
His belief that all lives have equal value inspired our mission from the first
and will remain at the heart of everything we do to the last
was an extraordinary leader in the global fight against inequity
and a tireless advocate for the foundation and our issues
His impact was also felt across Seattle and the Pacific Northwest through his involvement in organizations
embodied what it means to show up for life
and humor were just a few qualities of a great man
Bill Sr.’s values and pragmatism were a reminder that this is very much a family foundation
in the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters
VA and was the son of Timothy Roy Foster and Crystal Leigh Dowdy Foster
A 5th grade student at Buckland Elementary School
he was the Vice-President of the Junior Beta Club
his tender side shown in the little things
like finding baby rabbits left behind and nurturing them along
he was dubbed the “Mighty Meat Ball” by his family and friends
just like his personality stuck on those he met
others who loved and survived him are his brothers
Gavin Taylor Foster and Keegan Gatling Foster; maternal grandparents
Becky and Larry Jones of Gates and Robin Dowdy of Chesapeake
OH and Derrick and Tonya Taylor of North Lima
Aidan was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather
and maternal great grandfather Lynn Hamlet
In lieu of a formal service for an informal “little boy”
the family will have a gathering celebrating his life on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m
For those who wish to remember Aidan with flowers
the family is planning a memorial garden at the home
and yard plants sent will be used in that garden
Another suggestion would be a contribution made to Buckland School in his memory

The North Dakota attorney general’s office recently inquired into a 2,100-acre farmland purchase by Red River Trust
The state hosts “corporate farming laws,” barring corporations and limited liability companies from owning and leasing farms and ranches
With the Gates’s new $13.5 million farmland purchase
North Dakotans—including the attorney general—responded with concern the sale violates the state’s law
Red River Trust received a letter from the North Dakota attorney general’s office last week
alerting the trustee of the North Dakota land law
“Our office needs to confirm how your company uses this land and whether this use meets any of the statutory exceptions
such as the business purpose exception,” wrote Drew Wrigley
While the Red River Trust’s written reply is unknown
the North Dakota attorney general has okayed the purchase
the state attorney general’s office offered its stamp of approval as the sale complies with state law against corporate farming

New electronic fare gates will be installed and begin operation on Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Commuter Rail North Station’s concourse this spring
This improvement is part of the Commuter Rail’s fare gate program that will ultimately add gates at North
There will be no impacts to Commuter Rail service from the fare gate construction project
however riders will notice construction activity in sections of the North Station concourse
“This is an important first step in delivering on our commitment to prevent fare non-collection on the Commuter Rail system,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak
“The vast majority of Commuter Rail customers travel through North
as well as fare gates to come at South and Back Bay Stations will allow us to improve our level of fare collection and collect more detailed information on passenger demand.”
we support the installation of the new fare gates which will modernize the Commuter Rail network
deliver benefits for riders and improve the customer experience in fare collection,” said Keolis CEO Abdellah Chajai
The gates are designed to accommodate an even greater number of Commuter Rail riders than was typical before the pandemic and will not slow movement through the station
They will reduce crowding when a train’s departure track is announced
The design and configuration of the fare gates at North Station was developed with riders' needs in mind
Observing and analyzing riders' behaviors and pre-pandemic movements through stations;
Construction activity will be conducted on weekdays between 5:00 a.m
two sections of the North Station concourse will be blocked off at a time to allow for the removal of flooring and the installation of electrical components
these areas will reopen while the work moves to two different sections of the station
There will be three rounds of this work in phase one
with two sections blocked off during each round to ensure ample passenger flow through the station
there will be a period of louder than normal noise in the concourse while the flooring is removed
Passenger assistants will be available to help any passengers needing assistance navigating the changes
After this first phase of construction is complete
the second phase will begin which includes the installation of the fare gate stanchions and framing with doors open
This final phase will also be conducted in sections around the concourse
Once the fare gates are operational beginning at North Station in late spring 2022
riders will notice the following fare collection changes:
Gates will be operational and staffed from 6:00 a.m
Prior to activation of the fare gates at North Station
riders will be given the opportunity to try the gates and experience the process for entering and exiting for two weeks before they are officially launched
Details for the trial period and official launch of the gates will be shared once those dates are confirmed

we turn our attention to the polar jet stream
which will largely determine how much of this winter’s precipitation will fall in a frozen form and how cold our temperatures might get
the polar jet stream — controlled by the now-infamous polar vortex — can be thought of as the gatekeeper to wintry weather in the Southeast US
A stronger polar jet stream means stronger westerly winds and little deviation in the jet pattern at high latitudes
which bottles up cold air up near the North Pole and keeps the gates closed to prevent that cold air from advancing to the south
a weaker polar jet stream (pictured on the right) has more deviations in its path
which can send pieces of the polar vortex and cold
This also enhances our chances for winter storms as the potential for interaction between the subtropical and polar jet streams increases
We often describe the strength and position of the polar jet stream by discussing the phases of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)
A negative phase of each is associated with a weaker polar jet and a blocking pattern to our north that is favorable for wintry weather in North Carolina
The combined effects of these patterns help establish a strong high pressure system over eastern Europe
a low pressure system in the north Pacific
and a weakening of the polar vortex from the top of the atmosphere down
Here’s how each ingredient plays a part and how they stack up this year
As we’ve already discussed in this year’s Winter Outlook
one of the strongest El Niño events on record is in place
which should mean an active subtropical jet stream this winter
El Niño can also affect the polar jet stream
As the map of 500 millibar height anomalies — basically
or troughs and ridges in the jet stream — on the left shows
one prominent upper-level feature during strong El Niño winters is an anomalously strong low-pressure system in the north Pacific
this strong North Pacific low disrupts the upper-atmospheric flow pattern
The ripples from this disturbance help prevent the polar vortex from becoming strong and closely bound to the North Pole
This North Pacific low often sets up in December
that may be a good indication that El Niño’s impacts on the polar jet stream are present
A theory first proposed more than 15 years ago by Dr. Judah Cohen linked the rate of increase of Siberian snowfall in October with large-scale atmospheric responses in the following winter
As snow builds up over Eurasia in the fall
the surface cools but the upper atmosphere warms
This helps establish a semi-permanent high-pressure system over eastern Europe
this high — along with the cooler surface temperatures farther south across central Asia — can disrupt the upper-atmospheric flow and weaken the polar vortex and polar jet stream
snow fell across Siberia at a steady and often rapid rate
The month finished with the 6th-highest snow cover out of the past 48 years
Although that’s not as high as last year
when the October snow cover ranked as the 2nd-highest
atmospheric El Niño impacts that were missing last year are now present
which should bolster our chances of seeing a favorable polar jet stream pattern
In last year’s Winter Outlook, we introduced the idea that winds in the stratosphere — measured by the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) index — propagate downward to the jet stream level and influence the strength of the polar vortex from the top down
those upper-atmospheric winds were strong easterlies (a negative QBO) and we expected that as they reached the level of the westerly jet stream
they would weaken the polar jet stream and polar vortex
That didn’t happen during the winter
and we saw a strongly negative AO and NAO in July once it happened
those stratospheric winds have become westerly and the October QBO value was the most positive ever measured during that month
Once the atmospheric impacts of ENSO and Siberian snowfall have had time to set up and act on the polar vortex this winter
we could see a similar pattern shift by January
This fall, we’ve seen two out of three precursors for polar vortex weakening: El Niño conditions and above-normal October Siberian snowfall buildup. Their atmospheric footprints are also showing up in the latest global observations
which may be setting the stage for the polar vortex to weaken through December and early January
it could eventually allow for pieces of the vortex to detach and move southward — similar to the last two winters — opening the gates for cold air outbreaks and the potential for wintry weather likely beginning in January
This polar pattern accompanied by a negative AO and/or NAO pattern would favor wintry setups for the Southeast
If a sustained period with a negative AO and NAO phase were to develop this winter, the potential for a severe winter storm — while still relatively low — would be much higher than normal based on the likelihood of an active southerly storm track and the availability of cold air
there are no guarantees in North Carolina winters until flakes are actually falling

The sale of prime North Dakota farmland to a group tied to Bill Gates has stirred emotions over a Depression-era law meant to protect family farms and raised questions about whether the billionaire shares the state’s values
(AP) — The sale of a couple thousand acres of prime North Dakota farmland to a group tied to Bill Gates has stirred emotions over a Depression-era law meant to protect family farms and raised questions about whether the billionaire shares the state’s values
Gates is considered the largest private owner of farmland in the country with some 269,000 acres across dozens of states
according to last year’s edition of the Land Report 100
an annual survey of the nation’s largest landowners
He owns less than 1 percent of the nation’s total farmland
“I don’t know that it’s quite as volatile a situation as some have depicted,” North Dakota Republican Attorney General Drew Wrigley told The Associated Press Thursday
but it’s not me sticking a finger in the eye of Bill Gates
told a North Dakota TV station that many people feel they are being exploited by the ultra-rich who buy land but do not necessarily share the state’s values
About 2100 acres (849.84 hectares) of land were sold in the deal
who is currently on a state-sponsored trade mission to the United Kingdom
did not immediately respond to a list of questions emailed by the AP
Wrigley said the corporate farming inquiry goes out “as a matter of course” when his office is notified of farmland sales
in this case Red River Trust’s $13.5 million purchase of property in two counties from wealthy northeastern North Dakota potato growers Campbell Farms
Phone calls to Campbell Farms went unanswered
“It’s meant to get everybody up to speed on what the ownership arrangement is and what their intentions are for the land,” Wrigley said
they’re informed they’re going to have to divest of the land.”
Corporations are exempted from the law if the land is necessary “for residential or commercial development; the siting of buildings
or similar business or industrial purposes of the corporation or limited liability company; or for uses supportive of or ancillary to adjacent non agricultural land for the benefit of both land parcels,” the law reads
“The governor strongly supports family farms and is open to discussions about cutting red tape that puts North Dakota farmers at a disadvantage compared with neighboring states and ensuring that our ranchers and farmers can succeed and grow their operations
helping rural communities to thrive,” Burgum spokesman Mike Nowatzki said
(AP) — North Dakota’s attorney general has found the sale of a couple thousand acres of prime farmland to a group tied to Bill Gates complies with a Depression-era law meant to protect family farms because the land is being leased back to farmers
Gates is considered the largest private owner of farmland in the country with some 269,000 acres (108,860 hectares) across dozens of states
The Microsoft co-founder owns less than 1 percent of the nation’s total farmland
purchased $13.5 million worth of land in two counties from wealthy northeastern North Dakota potato growers Campbell Farms
the Campbell family in February filed a partnership name certificate with the North Dakota secretary of state naming their farming operation the Red River Trust — the same name as Gates’ firm
But an attorney for Gates’ firm wrote to the attorney general’s office that the Campbells registered the name without his knowledge
The Campbells did not immediately respond to a request for comment

Bill Gates' purchase of a large patch of land in North Dakota has sparked fury and conspiracy theories on social media after the Microsoft billionaire secured legal approval to purchase the 2,100 acres of farmland in the state last week
Having already amassed nearly 270,000 acres of farmland across the country
who is one of the richest men in the world
is the largest private owner of farmland in America
On June 30, Gates won the approval of the North Dakota Attorney General to buy the farmland for $13.5 million from potato growers Campbell Farms in the northeast of the state
The state's Republican Attorney General Drew Wrigley said that the takeover complies with a Depression-era law meant to protect family farms because the land was being leased back to farmers
North Dakota's Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring had previously told local station KFYR-TV that locals were livid at the news and people across the state were "upset." Newsweek has reached out to Goehring for comment
The developments have also spurred fury and questioning on social media

"This isn't the 1st time; he's amassed nearly 270k acres of farmland & is already the largest private owner of farmland in America #LateStageCapitalism #systemfail"
"This can't be good. He's all about reducing the population and playing god. Don't trust," Twitter user Mtaylor tweeted
a blog that has regularly reported on unfounded conspiracy theories
questioned why "an entrenched climate change ideologue who wants to change food production" would be purchasing more than a quarter of a million acres of farmland
