North Hills’ Alexa Edmunds, a Cal (Pa.) commit, returned this season after missing most of 2024 with an injury. North Hills had WPIAL softball title ambitions that were dashed in a stunning postseason upset but with a hardened lesson learned for a group of players focused on slugging their way to a championship in 2025 taking the Section 1-5A title and earning the No 10 Thomas Jefferson stopped what appeared to be a team bound for a title game appearance “This group is pretty focused,” said Libby Gasior in her 18th year as North Hills’ head coach “They have some experience and they know that if you lose Gasior and her team are trying to make sure there is not a repeat of last season’s disappointment by bringing the bats out in a major way this spring “We’ve just been really consistent,” Gasior said “We’ve had players step up against different pitchers and be really consistent It’s been pretty well balanced and offensively pretty strong.” North Hills lost just two seniors from last year’s lineup “We had a lot of people who knew what kind of roles they were stepping into which has helped early on,” Gasior said We weren’t sure on how we’d do there but everyone has gotten into a nice role with each other.” The Indians have also greatly benefited from the return of Cal (Pa.) recruit Alexa Edmunds who received all-section honors as a pitcher in 2023 but missed nearly the entirety of 2024 because of injury “She missed a full year pretty much,” Gasior said “Her bat and her overall presence as a senior has been good She’s been able to play a lot looser for us which has just taken a lot of pressure off of her.” Abby Sutton has taken the majority of the reps in the circle as the team’s primary pitcher and also features a strong bat at the plate “Abby’s a really good kid,” Gasior said “She worked really hard in the offseason We have a pretty decent strength and conditioning program we do and she did a really good job getting stronger She put a lot of time in on different pitches and different things we stressed from last season She wants to learn and compete and go out and get better.” Gasior has also been impressed with the play of junior catcher Lily Adamski “She’s the kid you want to coach,” Gasior said we want to try you at third base,’ and she’s going to give everything she can She’s going to run through a wall for you.” Around those players has been that balanced attack that seems to have a new player step up each game But it’s one that Gasior knows still can find another level “Hitting is one of those things that can come and go,” she said “We’ve established a pretty good consistent approach where we can put up some good numbers there A lot of these kids have put in a lot of work “I’m not a big believer in anything being complete There’s always something to learn.” with the lesson of last season’s disappointment and the over-emphasis on refinement the Indians will be able to hoist their first WPIAL championship trophy since 2021 next month being grateful for the opportunity we have,” Gasior said “It’s not taken for granted or ‘Let’s get through the regular season to get to the playoffs.’ You have to play your best every game.” Meatball Madness' goal was to produce 250,000 meatballs in the matter of nine hours Each meatball symbolized the capacity it takes to feed each and every individual in Los Angeles who is struggling with hunger The joint collaboration demonstrated the forces that are needed to tackle the homeless epidemic that is currently going on in the city Hope The Mission is one of the largest organizations in the nation that is dedicated to serving the homeless and preventing poverty by offering immediate and long-term assistance They have about 33 facilities and 2,700 shelter beds Hope the Mission has constantly worked with many volunteers to provide nutritious meals since 2009 Volunteers were welcomed to join alongside the SoCalGas volunteers for the event The event took place at the Hope Headquarters in North Hills If you want to learn additional information, click here. The shooting was reported at 9:30 a.m. at a bus stop near Nordhoff Street and Orion Avenue, where two boys, between the ages of 15 and 16 years old, were waiting for a bus, said LAPD Officer Drake Madison. The two victims were approached by five suspects and shot, Madison said. The suspects were seen fleeing west from the scene, while the victims fled east. The two teenagers were taken to a nearby hospital and are stable, Madison said. The victims have been uncooperative in the investigation, he said, and a description of the suspects was not available. Los Angeles Unified School District officials sent an alert to parents informing them of the lockdown, which has since been lifted. “Los Angeles School Police was called to our campus after individuals off-campus sustained injuries,” the alert read. “Our campus is safe and open for instruction.” Salvador Hernandez is a reporter on the Fast Break Desk, the Los Angeles Times’ breaking news team. He is currently in critical condition.  Earlier in the day, Sky 5 captured footage of the police presence at the scene of the Coquette restaurant. According to police, the shooting happened inside the restaurant following an argument between two men who knew each other. Aguilar described the moments before he and his coworker were shot.  "We were having our daily meeting before the shift began. One of our employees had brought in a cake to celebrate a bartender's birthday. She was cutting the cake, and moments later, I was shot," he said. The motive of the shooting remains unclear. "No one there had any reason to hate him or dislike him or have anything personal against him. Not to my knowledge," Aguilar said.   Heather Young is another server at the restaurant. She said she didn’t know the shooter well and saw no signs that something like this could happen.   Aguilar showed WRAL News his injuries saying, "There's a bullet still lodged in my hand here."  7 Brooks learned from other yoga teachers at the studio about a shooting "I was looking out my windows kind of nervously is he gonna run across the street and start shooting over here?," she said Employees and shoppers were trying to get out of North Hills while Wake County parents were trying to get into the area to get their children Carroll Middle School was one of a handful of Wake County schools that was in a code red lockdown while it was stressful not knowing what was going on they were confident the teachers were keeping their children safe "We initially got a text from the school system saying there was a code red and I put a text out to some of my friends asking for prayers and they were immediately texting back what they had seen on the news," said April said she picked up her child and two others after the code red lockdown was lifted "They were clear the whole time that it was not an active shooter," she said "We were able to turn on the news and know that they weren't in imminent danger but [we're] still glad for it to be over and it to be done." While the future of the restaurant remains up in the air Romano's thoughts are with not only the victims but also the owners who are having to pick up the pieces They definitely worry about their staff," he said "We always have contentious attitudes towards people that we work for the restaurant’s owners responded by saying "No comment." Pirring was hired earlier this year as the new head coach of the North Hills girls basketball team taking over a program that broke through in 2023-2024 winning its first section title in 44 years “I have three daughters,” said Pirring “My oldest is a freshman at North Hills my middle is in seventh grade and my youngest is a fifth grader “I walked away from basketball because of my kids I never thought I’d get back in it because of them.” Pirring has plenty of coaching experience on his resume He was an assistant boys coach at Shaler from 2006-2012 helping the Titans to a state semifinal appearance in his last year when he started missing milestone events in his children’s lives those daughters started to play basketball most recently serving as the middle school coach at North Hills When Tony Grenek left North Hills after two years to take the same job at Shaler Pirring hopped at the chance to coach the Indians to see if he could continue the strong play at the high school level while also getting the chance to coach his own kids we had some success down there,” said Pirring We were undefeated for two seasons in seventh and eighth grade that will move up into Class 6A and will do so while trying to replace a large group of seniors including all-section performers Olivia Waters and Gianna Sturdivant having reached the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinals and played a pair of consolation games in an attempt to reach the PIAA postseason “(Grenek) is a great coach and did a great job with that group last year,” said Pirring made the playoffs and kind of came out of nowhere People came to North Hills and had to scout us That’s just another check of the box.’ “But now I only have two starters who have played varsity minutes The rest were all JV players and never came on the floor for varsity.” as she’ll be one of just two seniors on the roster “She’s the captain,” said Pirring of Minton “I need her energy and for her to help out these younger kids they’ve had three coaches in four years at North Hills and I don’t want to see that happen.” Delaney Amato worked into the starting lineup She’ll play a prominent role again this year following a personally successful year on the soccer field as one of the region’s top goalkeepers “She’s really coming along,” said Pirring “She needs to play a big role for us this year She played a big role offensively last year and maybe got away with her athletic ability This year I’ll need more for her on defense and for her to help us out there.” Zoe Devlin is a promising freshman who will get playing time early Pirring’s hope is that those returning players — as well as the new additions — will be able to quickly adapt to his system “We want to play up tempo and fast,” he said “We have tremendous athletes and I’m trusting them to play fast you have to think fast.’ That’s hard for some of these girls I need them to start thinking and playing fast “And I want them to have in their minds that defense wins championships.” North Hills will need both sides of the ball to click on all cylinders Pine-Richland and defending WPIAL runner-up and rival North Allegheny “This section is brutal,” said Pirring you have some of the powerhouses that have been there before and the legacies of some of the teams that we’re in with but I know that other teams out there will stand in our way.” Emergency 9 Golf has developed a renovation plan for North Hills CC near Milwaukee the hole that AW Tillinghast consulted on towards the end of his career with course construction to kick off in autumn 2026 Emergency 9 Golf has created a masterplan for the historical renovation of North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls near Milwaukee The design firm referenced historical photographs and a letter about the seventh hole written by AW Tillinghast (during his time consulting for the PGA of America) while developing plans for the course which was originally designed by John Barr and built by Pioneer Golf & Landscape in 1928 reinstating open-air drainage channels throughout the property and enlarging the greens so they are closer to their original size and feature more pin locations the original bunker concepts will be restored using a combination of cross-over bunkers and greenside runoffs Emergency 9 Golf is focused on the original Golden Age aesthetic,” said Samuel Beckman of Emergency 9 Golf “The golf course must remain both a challenge for the highest skilled players and entertaining for those who play socially It is our role to honour the North Hills spirit making sure it remains true to the original design intent and the environment it exists in even as this game we love constantly evolves.” Watch: a hole-by-hole walkthrough of the proposed changes Minor renovations are expected to begin in winter 2024-2025 and will be followed by course construction in autumn 2026 The project is set to be completed in time for the club’s 100th anniversary and the 2029 Wisconsin Amateur Championship The popular French restaurant Coquette, located in North Hills, reopened on Sunday after a shooting that left one person dead announced its reopening in a Facebook post: "With the strength of our Coquette family and the heartfelt support of our community we will reopen for dinner service tomorrow The post also said that seating would be available by reservation only as the restaurant continues to recover "We appreciate the outpouring of support," said Kevin Jennings "I know how to say we can't even put into words you know "I've gotten hundreds and hundreds of emails texts and phone calls offering support from the business community churches and certainly the management of this center." The shooting happened last Friday when Raleigh police say 34-year-old George Colom The shooting resulted in the death of 26-year-old Jonathan Schaffer and injuries to another employee, Jonathan Aguilar they don't teach you how to deal with it," Jennings said "I don't know there is a business that they teach you how to deal with it." Schaffer, remembered by coworkers for his kindness and work ethic had been a valued member of the restaurant staff that’s all it seemed like," one employee said Colom's family confirmed that he died from his injuries.  "Some people have been really upset, and the come into the restaurant and that makes them feel better," Jennings said. "Some people are the opposite. We've had people who felt like they were good, and they came into into the restaurant and it just breaks them." When making the decision on when to open their doors again, Jennings said he did receive some backlash for not opening sooner, but it was a collective decision between him and everyone involved in the business and not taken lightly "There was an initial plan to try and reopen on Friday, and that was sort of voted too soon. Sunday is the day of rest, the day of reflection, the day of family and time," he said. "We found that to be the most appropriate day." Jennings said while he's happy his family is back in business, he doesn't want to lose sight of why they came back on Sunday, adding that Schaffer will have a collage inside the restaurant permanently. "At the end of the day, we just don't want it lost that, you know, our friend [Johnathan] is no longer with us. we're really concerned about his family and want to make sure that the focus remains on them," Jennings said. ©2025 CBS Broadcasting Inc. North Hills coach Buzz Gabos watches from the bench during a 2022 playoff game against North Allegheny. the North Hills boys basketball team is forced to move on following an early departure of the team’s top scorer the Indians were able to reach the WPIAL Class 5A basketball playoffs following the offseason loss of center Royce Parham who transferred to a prep school before heading to Marquette losing a heartbreaking double overtime game to Fox Chapel in the first round of the postseason “We had a pretty good second half of the season,” said coach Buzz Gabos “Our schedule was really difficult out of section We had some challenges because we didn’t have many nights where we felt like we could go in and work on some things That was hard from the beginning because we were really seeing some teams Relying mostly on freshmen and sophomores last year North Hills’ roster was dealt a blow in the offseason who scored 19.5 points per game as a sophomore transferred to a prep school and then to a high school in Kentucky leaving a scoring hole in the Indians’ lineup But it’s a void that Gabos feels is on its way to being filled “We didn’t really have him in the offseason,” said Gabos “We kind of knew that he was looking to go elsewhere It was just a matter of when he was going to leave “We’ve played with this group the whole time It’s a group that we feel like can be successful at both ends in understanding what it is we want to do with our defensive principles and offensive concepts We feel like the guys that we have fit that system.” Helping ease the pain of losing a dynamic scorer like James will be the returner of senior point guard Zach Pollaro who averaged 18.5 points per game and was named to the all-section team “We’re expecting a lot of big things from him,” said Gabos “A lot of Division III schools are interested in him and have been in contact with us quite a bit and watching him he was able to play the point and then knock down some shots but he didn’t have to be real aggressive get us up the floor and then look to score it which he hadn’t done prior to this summer Gabos feels that North Hills will have a steady nine-player rotation to go with Pollaro including Nathan Schanbacher and Jackson Long The two will undoubtedly rise into bigger roles this year “We have a nice little mix of old and young,” said Gabos “Right now they seem to all be playing well together … It’s a good foundation to build around.” Gabos had to switch things up defensively during the season when an initial plan to run full-court pressure didn’t work as well as the team had hoped against some of the WPIAL’s better competition he’ll keep the structure that helped the Indians go 7-2 to close the regular season in 2023-24 “We’ll be more of a half-court team defensively,” Gabos said We like to play fast offensively up the floor but defensively we’ll be more half-court.” While the sting of last year’s postseason exit against a Fox Chapel program that has become a bit of a postseason rival of North Hills — having played each other in three consective playoffs — Gabos found a silver lining as the program gets set to bump back up to Class 6A this year “It was good that we got some experience in the playoffs,” he said We’re two years removed from having played a lot of these teams.” “Can we get in?” Gabos said of the playoff field which will feature eight teams he knows that the road is going to be tough in the classification everyone knows that it’s going to be really top-heavy,” Gabos added Fox Chapel has a lot coming back and New Castle is probably the best team Everybody else is going to be in the mix for those other spots.” North Hills will certainly be battle tested when it comes to the meat of its section schedule The Indians play nonsection games against Hampton “You have to play the better teams and the bigger schools because you know that If we can win some of those nonsection games that’ll be a good indicator that we’re ready for the section but there’s going to be a lot of close games We’re going to have to win our share of tight ones at the end.”
