NORTH LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — North Las Vegas has put financial insolvency
the global pandemic and other problems in the rear-view mirror and is poised to make strides in education
That was the message from Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown during her annual state of the city address
held in a packed ballroom at the Aliante Casino-Hotel on Thursday
I broke down Goynes-Brown's vision of a 'complete city' here
The speech came just hours after a fatal shooting inside the casino that led police on a valleywide chase
The suspect was eventually taken into custody
But the crime didn't stop the mayor from detailing her plans to build a "vibrant and welcoming community" that would serve as home for families and businesses the way it did for her and her family years ago
"That is why one of my goals as mayor has been to make North Las Vegas a complete city
a city that provides every opportunity our residents need to prosper and achieve their dreams — without ever needing to leave," said Goynes-Brown
See how the city addressed Gateway Village in last year's State of the City.
We looked into how the Apex Industrial Park will create job opportunities.
Hylo Park broke ground this year. We here there to capture the moment
but we are getting close," Goynes-Brown said
We set a vision and a goal and we achieve it
Our rhythm of successes is producing a complete city."
NORTH LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Channel 13 is following up on plans announced by officials in North Las Vegas one year ago
In her State of the City address last year
Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown mentioned plans to offer child care for the children of public safety workers employed by the City of North Las Vegas
The goal is to improve recruitment and retention by providing working parents a service that's become increasingly harder to find and afford
that child care center is getting ready to officially open up
I got a chance to check it out as officials put the finishing touches on it
Located near North Commerce Street and West Centennial Parkway, North Star Academy has six classrooms and can serve up to 64 students, from six weeks to five years old. Bright Horizonsis the service provider
Initially, this was pitched as a service for the children of public safety employees. But officials decided to open it up to all city employees, recognizing the challenges many working parents face when it comes to finding childcare. According to a 2023 Childcare Policy Report from the Governor's Office of Workforce Innovation
74% of Nevada children between 0 and 5 years old do not have access to licensed childcare
"Do you think issues securing childcare have maybe prevented some people from taking employment opportunities with the city in the past?" I asked Wilson Ramos
the city's director of community services and engagement
It has been an uphill battle trying to bring forth better providers
so it has been a prohibiting factor for individual employees
Ramos said he knows firsthand the difficulty of securing childcare as a working parent
It's not just availability that's a struggle for families looking for child care — it's affordability
I asked Ramos about the cost at North Star Academy
and he said the fees are competitive with other childcare centers in the area
City officials say the monthly tuition for employees at North Star Academy ranges from $500-$600 based on the child's age
and that they "compared how other high-performing organizations structure their childcare pricing and designed ours to include cost-sharing options that balance affordability with maintaining high standards of care."
Ramos said he believes employers offering wraparound services for their employees is the future
and that this is one way to tackle the difficulties many companies are facing right now when it comes to attracting and retaining the best
"We wanted to offer another layer of services and opportunity for our employees
then our employees can best serve our community," Ramos said
he hopes North Las Vegas' counterparts will take this approach
and collaborate with providers to offer essential services to their employees
North Star Academy will serve younger kids of city employees
but officials plan to open it up to older students too
so they have care while they're on extended breaks from school
we've got a really good buy-in from our staff," Ramos said
"We've got a good set of individuals who are willing to participate as a pilot
North Star Academy is set to hold its ribbon cutting on March 24 and begin gradually welcoming students the following day

North Las Vegas doesn’t have a lot of internet service provider competition
Most ISPs in the area offer plans starting at $50 or $55 per month
Cox has the widest wired internet coverage in the area
Its $30 price tag will get you a 100Mbps plan
Consider bundling home internet and a mobile line to get discounts through Verizon or T-Mobile.
Cox is king when it comes to top speeds in North Las Vegas
The ISP offers two 2,000Mbps plans in different parts of the city
but some neighborhoods have fiber as an option
The gig and multigig fiber plans have upload speeds of up to 1,000Mbps. Some areas might also get the Quantum Fiber 2 gig plan for $95 a month
It gets you download speeds of 2,000Mbps with upload speeds of up to 1000Mbps
North Las Vegas is mostly a cable town with only 17% fiber coverage according to the FCC's map
but there are scattered pockets of fiber from Cox and Quantum Fiber
primarily on the northern side of the city.
Cox has the widest coverage of any wired provider in North Las Vegas
The next-closest competitor is CenturyLink
but its coverage is mainly through an outdated DSL network. T-Mobile's Home Internet only reaches about 60% of the town
Hunting for the lowest prices or fastest speeds in town
Cox and Quantum Fiber have both locked down
Cox's 100Mbps $30 per month plan is the cheapest in town -- if you're eligible for it -- with next place going to Cox's 250Mbps plan and Quantum Fiber's 500Mbps plan tied at $50 monthly
North Las Vegas isn’t a hotspot for home internet bargains
Expect starting prices around $50 per month
on par with what you’ll find in neighboring Las Vegas
and its cable and fiber plans start at $50 for 100Mbps
look to Quantum Fiber’s 500Mbps plan for $50 per month if you can get it at your address.
One way to save money is to sign up with Verizon or T-Mobile’s 5G home internet service and bundle it with an eligible mobile plan
That can drop your home internet price as low as $35 per month with either provider
The best internet deals and promotions in North Las Vegas depend on the discounts available during that period
but we look frequently for the latest offers.

The wide availability of Cox’s gigabit and multigigabit speeds across North Las Vegas helped the city perform well in a recent Ookla speed test report
(Disclosure: Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET
Ookla tracked a median fixed internet download speed of 261Mbps in North Las Vegas. It's very close to Las Vegas
Both cities clock in above the US average of around 263Mbps
While Cox’s 2,000Mbps plan is the fastest around
consider Quantum Fiber’s 940Mbps plan for speedy uploads at a reasonable price. Some areas might also be eligible for the 2 gig plan by Quantum Fiber for $95 a month
Note that these are only guidelines -- and that internet speed
service and performance vary by connection type

Most households in North Las Vegas will opt for Cox’s cable internet due to availability
Verizon or T-Mobile 5G home internet can be a serviceable alternative if you want to avoid Cox and can pull down decent speeds at your location
If fiber is available to you -- especially Quantum Fiber’s affordable 500Mbps plan -- go that route
Cox’s fiber options are preferable to its cable offerings
but the fiber network doesn’t reach nearly as many homes in North Las Vegas.
