A Long Island man used a can of spray paint and a model boat to viciously attack another man during a violent home invasion
is accused of forcing his way into a 23-year-old man’s home on Moore Street in North New Hyde Park around 5:45 p.m
Collins allegedly sprayed the victim in the face with paint
then repeatedly bashed him in the head with both the can and a wooden model boat
The beating caused a gash to the back of the victim’s head and extensive bruising
The victim managed to shove Collins out the door and call 911
Collins reportedly hurled a rock at the house
Officers quickly tracked down Collins nearby and arrested him without incident
He is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday

The Town of North Hempstead reopened the New Hyde Park facility Thursday following the completion of a $52,114 expansion of the play area and artificial turf field
The town will spend about another $54,000 to build a shade structure at the park
The entire project is being funded through the American Rescue Plan Act
“Thanks to some ARPA funds that we needed to use by the end of [last] year
we almost doubled the size that the dogs can run here,” Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said in an interview as dogs raced around her
“People establish friendships with the other dog [owners]
The funds came from a $3.8 million reallocation of federal pandemic aid originally earmarked for the dredging of Manhasset Bay
The town needed to spend the money by the end of 2024
and with the dredging project far from complete
the money was directed toward several other projects
“I’m not going to give that money back to the federal government,” DeSena said in an interview in December
“So we were able to find several contracts that we already have that we could allocate money to."
the town’s parks and recreation commissioner
Workers excavated an area of pebbles and put down the turf
“It’s so nice to see them have this extra space to run and exercise and make friends,” Gillen said
It's the first time the dog park had been updated since it opened in 2019
Gillen said construction of the shade structure should begin within the next couple of weeks
The town will replace a water fountain with faucets for both humans and dogs
using about $3,000 in department operating funds
The town will also put turf down on baseball and softball fields in Carle Place (Charles J
Fuschillo Park and Eighth & Asbury Ballfield) and Albertson (John D
Those projects should take about two months to complete
said in an interview the expanded dog park will be helpful for people who don't have as much space in their backyards
"They can meet their friends and run around with them," Srivastava said

Pickleball fever has made its way to New Hyde Park
The Town of North Hempstead will open 14 new pickleball courts in July as part of a renovation to Michael J
Tully Park that has an overall projected cost of about $9 million
They called the project the largest renovation at the Evergreen Avenue park since its construction more than 50 years ago
“This is a major investment in Tully — in the field
parking lot and now of course the pickleball courts,” Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said Monday
“Everybody asks for pickleball courts now.”
DeSena said Tully Park will offer the most pickleball courts in one location in Nassau County
The sport has grown in popularity in the last few years and many municipalities have offered courts and classes to address the craze
The town has invested nearly $2 million in the new pickleball courts
Renovation work also was done on a tennis court recently
DeSena said workers have begun tackling improvements to the track and its deteriorating turf field — at a cost of $3 million
Construction on that part of the project is expected to take up to six months
They said that work could begin in the fall
A $1 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will help pay for the new parking lot
which is built on the site of a former landfill
DeSena noted that because of that history
workers will install geotextile netting under the new surface to make sure sinkhole problems of the past don't recur
the bumpy parking lot is filled with potholes and cracks and many parts have been patched repeatedly
Councilman Dennis Walsh said the improvements are much needed and long overdue
He said many residents asked for improvements and are excited about the pickleball courts
"This is the most popular thing around now," he added
Walsh also noted that the parking lot reconstruction is sorely needed and will enhance the recreation area
The park's main building was repaired after Superstorm Sandy caused damage to the exterior in 2012. FEMA reimbursed the town for some of the expenses, Newsday reported in 2015
The park's 30,000-square-foot aquatic center opened in 1978 and in 2010
it was renovated to feature a figure-eight slide
a zone with six lanes for lap swimming and an exercise room
The park also has three athletic fields and basketball courts in addition to its tennis courts
Lakeville Estates Civic Association president Bill Cutrone said the any improvement to the community is welcome but he’s worried the parking lot problems could persist
“We hope that was taken into consideration with the construction so that a couple years from now we don’t have the problems that the facility has had over the years,” Cutrone said

The first-ever North Hempstead dog park's grand opening is set for Thursday
June 27 at 10 a.m.,Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town announced
features separate areas for small and large dogs
"We are excited to welcome our furry four-legged friends to the first ever North Hempstead Park built just for them," Bosworth stated via press release
"This state-of-the-art dog park truly was collaborative project between the Town and the residents
Many ideas from local dog owners and residents were incorporated into the plan which helped to make this wonderful and innovative dog park
We hope it brings hours and hours of pleasure to both dogs and their owners."
Both the large dog and small dog areas include artificial turf and pea gravel
as well as water fountains for both dogs and their owners are all features
and were donated by the Shelter Connection (a non-profit that works with the Town’s Animal Shelter)
"Our boy Otis is super excited to experience the brand new dog park," Sandra “Dee” Cerrone
"We are grateful to the Town of North Hempstead for hearing us out and making this vision a reality
Dogs are already welcome at many Town of North Hempstead parks
the new dog park is the first one in the Town that's built primarily for dogs

was taken to a hospital in the backseat of a police car
He was in stable condition Wednesday night at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and was expected to recover
said she was worshipping at a Hindu temple during morning services when she got news of the shooting and rushed to the hospital
"He was looking good," Shashi Arora
said the wounded officer called her from the hospital
She said doctors told her that Arora was shot in the abdomen and the bullet exited his right hip
"I almost caught him," Arora said of the shooter
Police said the break-in on Campbell Street was reported by two people inside the home in a 911 call placed at 1:50 a.m
"It was not a random act," Azzata said
Police said Arora arrived at the front of the home just as the suspects were leaving
police said they shut down dozens of streets in the leafy suburban neighborhood before capturing the suspects
because the suspects were not inside the two-story brick home long enough to take anything
The suspects' names were not released

"He's got nine lives," Carver said
"He's already used two of them."
Arora injured his back when he crashed his cruiser while chasing a suspect on the Cross Island Parkway several years ago
but that didn't keep him from returning to the beat
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano met with the wounded officer and his family and said he "thanked him for his heroic service" and "offered the support and prayers of Nassau County."
Neighbors said the man and woman living in the upscale Campbell Street home were business owners who moved in about two years ago
Security cameras were visible on the front of the house
"I heard the shots and prayed they weren't hurt
because they own a business and they had said before they were worried someone would follow them home," said a neighbor
Charles said she heard officers screaming "Stop!" and "Get on the ground!" during the chase
while one of the suspects shouted back obscenities
"This is not the kind of neighborhood where people are breaking in for gold bullion," he said
"It's a real bucolic suburban block."
A number of other Nassau officers have been seriously injured or killed in recent years

Fuller has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial
Lopez's death came a week after Joseph Olivieri

Editor’s note: Newsday undertook an extensive
four-month review of reporting by Kevin Deutsch
who covered law enforcement from April 2012 to September 2016
The review of the former Newsday reporter’s work began after The Baltimore Sun this year reported that law enforcement and other officials questioned the veracity of Deutsch’s nonfiction book “Pill City” about Baltimore’s drug trade
questions arose about individuals named in Newsday stories by Deutsch
Martin’s Press and Deutsch have said they stand behind the book
to the highest journalistic standards and to maintaining our credibility with Newsday readers
We also are committed to being accountable to our readers
Newsday undertook the detailed review in that spirit and because of the concerns that were raised
The New York Times reported in an editor’s note that The Times “had been unable to locate or confirm the existence of two people who were named and quoted” in a Dec
Deutsch “maintains that the interviews and the descriptions are accurate,” The Times wrote
Newsday reviewed 600 stories with reporting by Deutsch
We contacted officials in the police departments regularly involved in Deutsch’s coverage
They said they had not had problems with his work
We then focused our research and reporting on individuals who
The review found 77 stories with 109 individuals from Deutsch’s reporting whom Newsday could not locate
The main points of the stories were not affected
While two stories about the Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen were based on sources Newsday could not locate
other media reported the main points of those stories but with attribution from different sources
Newsday is attaching an editor’s note to each story online that contains individuals we cannot locate
Researchers and reporters searched local and national public records
sites providing nationwide people searches
LinkedIn and Ancestry.com and nationwide news archives
They searched potential alternate spellings and other name variations
Their reporting followed potential leads they found through research
within stories and in information shared by Deutsch during the review
can be difficult because of changes in residence
reporters may encounter people who lead lives that are not reflected in public records or other sources of information that would help locate them
It is possible that some on our list were difficult to find or reluctant to respond to our review because they are undocumented immigrants
those battling or recovering from addiction or people involved in or around illegal activity
Some on our list were described discussing crimes in their neighborhoods
friends or neighbors of victims or as individuals living near or knowing those accused of crimes
witnesses to news events or related in some way to people in the news
Still others are described in stories as people actively engaged in public issues
Many individuals on the list are described as local
Deutsch said in email exchanges with Newsday that “I have no doubt about the veracity of the claims of the sources I quoted.” He also said
or other interviewee has raised any issues with even one of these stories.”
“It's impossible for any reporter to know whether the name given to him by interviewees on the street--or those reached briefly by phone or email-- is that person's full and legal name
rather than an alias or variation of their real name (maiden names and certain common nicknames/abbreviations for first names are often published by newspapers
But every one of the names on Newsday’s list was the name given to me by that interview subject
Newsday shared questions and updates with Deutsch as we progressed in the search for individuals we could not locate
We requested notes and contact information
Deutsch sent us notes he said represented all individuals we were unable to locate and responded over the course of the review by email
sharing information he said was from his recollection and notes
Reporters followed up on all information shared by Deutsch
He did not provide contact information for those on our list
Newsday reporters and editors sought unsuccessfully several times to meet with Deutsch to discuss his reporting and to review his notes together to ensure we were not missing contact information or other details that might help locate individuals
Deutsch maintained that the notes he shared “serve as evidence of interviews” with each source
Deutsch said he kept contact information in a Rolodex he left behind at Newsday’s main office and in a company-issued cellphone he returned within a week after resigning on Sept
Editorial staff did not find a Rolodex or other notes at our office
but found notes left at Newsday’s desk at a courthouse pressroom where he worked
We shared them with Deutsch and he confirmed they were his
the contents of the cellphone had been deleted immediately after Deutsch returned it to Newsday
Maintaining the trust of our readers is essential to our mission
If we are able subsequently to locate any individuals

New Hyde Park doubled the 6-6 junior center when the ball came into the low post
"Our two guys in the middle have got to make sure we control the paint," Krauz said of the mantra for Amal Kayani and Sireen Brown
"We’ve got to find a way to get him some easy finishes inside," GNN coach Kevin Graham said
Graham listed Cronin's strengths: "I just think his length; his basketball IQ; he rebounds and blocks shots very well; and he really does have a good midrange game."
Cronin said he has an offer from Manhattan
Miami and Tulane have also expressed interest
He wants to commit "by the end of my junior year going into my senior year."
"I really like their school academically as well as athletically," Cronin said
I want to go to a school that has good academics and also wants to play really good basketball."

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judy Bosworth said there will be no gap or loss of services for senior citizens who live in New Hyde Park
North Hempstead plans to begin to fund services for senior citizens who were helped by a nonprofit that will close its doors
The town's Project Independence program already serves seniors looking to "age in place," offering nurses and social workers to assist in their care in six communities -- New Hyde Park
Project Independence will now expand to work with seniors in North New Hyde Park
That program had been funded by a state grant of about $140,000 that was administered by the Manhattan nonprofit known as FEGS
Federation Employment and Guidance Services
FEGS announced earlier this year it will shut down
generating concern in the social services community
they will reallocate resources so members of the North New Hyde Park group can merge with the New Hyde Park unit of Project Independence
The town has amended its contract with health care providers and
reduced staffing hours in other Project Independence regions
efficient and well-run Project Independence right here in our town
there will be no gap or loss of services for those who live in North New Hyde Park," town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said in an interview
The town will now cover about 2,000 North New Hyde Park residents who already participate in activities with fellow New Hyde Park seniors at the local Clinton G
The town has contracts with North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Jewish Association for Services to the Aged for caseworkers and social workers
"We had to make adjustments," said Kimberly Corcoran-Galante
the town's commissioner for the Department of Services for the Aging
She said the town will "work with all of our subcontractors to keep that continuity."
The town counts about 50,000 seniors -- 60 and older -- among a population of 226,000
Caseworkers and social workers operate out of community centers and facilities throughout town and can make house calls
Taxis can take seniors to medical appointments and grocery stores
said she is relieved the town is adding to its coverage
"With the town's expansion of Project Independence
it worked out nicely that we were able to get absorbed," Tricarico said
"We are providing services to seniors in their home
and that hopefully allows them to stay in their homes as long as they possibly can."
Corcoran-Galante said the nonprofit was operating with the $140,000 state grant and that town officials will eventually seek that funding

The McDonald’s located on Long Island in New York doesn’t have the identifying golden arches or the big windows around a play area
you might not know it was a fast-food restaurant
It is a nineteenth-century mansion that has been converted over the years and used as restaurants
and the original portico and has been called the most beautiful McDonald’s in the US
When the fast-food chain bought the rundown mansion in 1986, plans were to tear down the house and build a more traditional eatery. But public outcry resulted in the mansion becoming a designated historic landmark. And the company restored the house and opened The McMansion
Despite The McMansions’ new look and upscale location
a food critic noted that the food was “exactly the same.”
Twisted bacon is another food item making news these days
A viral trend on social media is making a new way of cooking an old favorite an internet sensation
The rising trend got its start around mid-March with the hashtag #twistedbacon
Evolving hashtags include #bacontwist or #bacontwists
Tutorial videos walk through this new cooking method
which replaces the frying pan with a baking dish
Bacon strips are twisted then baked and reportedly come out crisp (and possibly chewy
Variations include smoked and barbecue twists.
Eating a serving of burgers and fries in a nineteenth-century mansion on Long Island or sitting at home eating baked twisted bacon with eggs and biscuits sounds good to me
no matter where we eat the fast-food burger and fries or how we cook the bacon we eat
Temptation often comes in the guise of something good
If someone offers me a plain yellow cake with plain icing
But offer me one layered with cream cheese chocolate icing decorated with ripe strawberries and other healthy fruits and I can’t resist
My flawed reasoning is that healthy additions cancel out the bad
I believe that’s the “sizzle” of twisted bacon and the appeal of the McMansion
It’s “twisted” that I am lured to eat something so bad that tastes so good.
Dressing up sin doesn’t change the ultimate result
Evangelist Billy Sunday says it best: “One reason sin flourishes is that it is treated like a cream puff instead of a rattlesnake.” I also believe sin often looks more like a cream puff than a rattlesnake
That’s the way Satan works and has worked since the Garden of Eden.
The serpent that tempted Eve was “more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made” (Genesis 3:1)
He will do all he can to make temptation attractive.
Our culture is filled with advertisements to seduce us
Television programming is filled with scenes gratifying sin
I recently turned on a favorite show I usually watch and the opening scene was a sex scene with two male characters in bed
it was primetime TV and I would have done the same
I chose to stop watching that show for good.
No matter how our culture “normalizes” sin
The same is still true, except I believe we are trading the flames of righteousness for twisted bacon. We have moved from God’s truth to twisted truth. How do we resist Satan’s lies?
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:7–8).
The psalmist prayed, “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever” (Psalm 86:11–12).
Twisted bacon is still bacon. Twisted truth is still a lie.

NY — Voters in the Town of North Hempstead's 2nd District will head to the polls Nov
5 to cast their ballots for council member
who was first appointed in 2014 and won a four-year term the following year
seeks his second full term against Republican challenger Ragini Srivastava and Green Party candidate Cassandra Lems
Patch reached out to the candidates via email and/or Facebook where we could find them to hear where they stand on important issues affecting the community
The single most pressing issue facing our (board
especially ensuring clean air and an untainted water supply
our waterways and our drinking water from dangerous runoff by banning or restricting the use of certain pesticides
Encourage the use of clean and renewable energy
Gas-powered leaf blowers should be completely banned; they are major polluters and can also lead to hearing loss
Reduce our impact on climate change by providing shuttle buses to reduce car use
encouraging bicycle use by providing bike lanes and secure bike parking
I also believe that taxes are too high on Long Island (which is the issue most people seem to focus on)
We should work to consolidate school districts so that the number of school supervisor salaries paid in Nassau County is drastically reduced
North Hempstead Town Council Candidates: Meet Peter Zuckerman
North Hempstead Town Council Candidates: Meet Ragini Srivastava
What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post
I do not accept donations from corporations or PACs
I am more adamantly pro-environment and pro-people than my opponents
and I champion peoples' First Amendment rights over the well-being of foreign governments
I also am not a part of the duopoly of corporate parties that has dominated Long Island politics for decades
While I have lived on Long Island for more than two decades
I also have the experience of having lived in other states where things are done differently and sometimes better
in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)
Although the town board has a good record on environmental issues
They failed to ban gas-powered leaf blowers — instead caved in to pressure from lawn services and passed a halfway measure
which has a chilling effect on the First Amendment rights of Americans to peacefully protest
The town's building department is still difficult for homeowners and businesses to navigate
The board has not done enough to stop the installation of 5G transmitters
which may pose a serious health threat to residents
there was a leaning toward the town's "opting out" when the state legalizes marijuana — I think marijuana should be legal in our town and sales allowed in locations where alcohol sales are permitted
