The Spartans are a half-game ahead of Floral Park
The Spartans’ backcourt was at the forefront
Junior point guard Vin Rienzie delivered 18 points and five assists and sophomore shooting guard Tristan Mitchell scored six of his 14 points in the final quarter
“It feels good to clinch the playoffs back-to-back years,” Mitchell said
They bowed out in the quarterfinals last season
“I feel like we can make a run way deeper than last year

3-5) to their third playoff berth in his four seasons
but they will have to take three of their final four to get there
“If we can bring the best team in the league down to the end of the game
His team led 42-41 before Mitchell drove from the left and drove from the right for consecutive baskets and a three-point edge
Alec Anderson put in a rebound to cut it to 45-44 before Mitchell hit a free throw with 1:24 left
but they came up empty on their next possession
Valley Stream North’s Zeke Morris hit two free throws and Mitchell made one in the final six seconds
had climbed out of a 36-27 third-quarter hole behind its press

Mike McVeigh played point guard and shooting guard for four seasons under Rube

you saw he had the leadership qualities,” Rube said
“He possessed the qualities to be a great teacher first and obviously coach
I knew it was something that he had a future path in as an educator/coach
McVeigh became coach of Valley Stream North’s varsity in 2021

The two finally squared off as coaches for the first time Saturday at Kings Park
it felt really fun to just play against him and see him on the other side of the court,” McVeigh said
So it was amazing just being able to grow up in Lynbrook with him as my coach
“Basketball is more than just wins and losses,” Rube said
you occasionally get a chance to live it as well
McVeigh has led the Spartans to a 9-2 start after a 16-5 season that ended in the Nassau A quarterfinals
The program has never claimed a county title
“We have a great group of guys,” junior point guard Vin Rienzie said after scoring 22 points
“I think we’re definitely a contender to win the Nassau County championship.”
Valley Stream North led 38-34 with four minutes left in the third quarter
then went on a 10-0 burst to go ahead by 14
Kings Park cut it to 50-41 after three periods before the Spartans pulled away
“We were playing defense really well,” Rienzie said
Rube said the 6-6 Edmundson is “possibly out for the season.”
This team is 5-6 after four straight losses but is 4-1 in Suffolk VI
“We’ve had championship teams and non-playoff teams
and the goal is always to make the playoffs,” Rube said
“We’re in a good position numbers-wise to make it
So it’s a work in progress like I’m sure every team is
I’d rather be a 4-1 work in progress than a 1-4 work in progress.”

I didn’t really get many shots in the first half
but that felt really good when I released it,” Obukwelu said
my confidence just picked back up and I was able to keep producing.”
The senior later scored off a spin move in the paint with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give Valley Stream North a 43-42 lead
He also made a foul shot with 11.5 seconds left before Floral Park’s Ryan Connolly found Kevin Cannon on a perfectly-placed inbounds pass lobbed from just in front of midcourt
resulting in a Cannon layup with 4.2 seconds left to tie the score at 44 and force overtime
Floral Park (2-2) scored the final five points of the first overtime period
including Connolly knocking down two foul shots with 16.8 seconds left to force a second overtime
Rienzie and Tristan Mitchell each had 14 points for Valley Stream North
Anthony Caris had 20 points for Floral Park
“I’ve never been in a double-overtime game in my life
I was in foul trouble early so I didn’t really play much but it’s not about how you start
it’s about how you finish so I’m glad we were able to close it out
Rienzie scored 10 of his 14 points in the second quarter while coming off the bench
Floral Park led 11-5 after the first quarter before the Spartans trimmed that lead to 24-21 at halftime
“My team was kind of getting slow and coming off the bench
“He’s ready for these moments,” coach Michael McVeigh said
“He came to play and it was just so fun watching him fly around and hit some big shots for us.”
Jalen Harrison added nine points and Danny Kosior had five points and key offensive rebounds late in the win
Kosior had an offensive rebound before Obukwelu’s go-ahead shot late in the fourth quarter and an offensive rebound before Harrison made a three-pointer to give Valley Stream North a 54-51 lead with 2:15 left in the second overtime period
When Obukwelu attended a Floral Park game this season
he was expecting a tough test when they played head-to-head
“I went and saw one of their games and I knew from the jump that this was going to be the team we needed to really play against,” he said
“I’m just glad we were able to close it out.”

Godwin Eyiuche of Valley Stream North looks back to pass during a Nassau boys basketball round of 16 playoff game against host Lynbrook on Friday
One point can be the difference between the total elation of advancing to the next round with the teammates you fought with all year or going home disheartened in defeat
On Friday night it was elation for Valley Stream North
10 Valley Stream North (14-6) went into Lynbrook’s home gym and escaped with a narrow 47-46 win in a Nassau Class A first-round matchup
7 seed to keep their championship hopes alive
In the final minute the Spartans’ Malcolm Harrington drove to the rim and found Brian Farrell on a cut to score the winning basket for a 47-45 lead
2 Sewanhaka (16-4) Wednesday night at Sewanhaka
with each adopting a zone defense as their primary strategy to slow down the other
Lynbrook went to a 1-3-1 zone while the Spartans adopted a 2-3 defense which proved effective in slowing Lynbrook’s offense
"We just played hard and together and stuck to the plan," said the Spartans’ Godwin Eyiuche
Valley Stream found their spots within the zone to penetrate and kick out to open shooters and knocked down three three-pointers in the first half
two of them coming from Eyiuche on the left wing
Valley Stream North ended the first half trailing 22-20
"He’s an all-county player and he’s a college basketball player," said head coach Michael McVeigh."He knows that we look to him to lead us offensively
The second half was even more competitive with Lynbrook’s Elias Sherman-Murphy driving deep into the paint to find his big men open and dumping the ball off to them for easy scores
Peter Donnarumma and Harris Cekic each scored nine points for Lynbrook
Key to Valley Stream North’s win was Harrington dominating the paint in the offensive zone
grabbing a bunch of key rebounds and ultimately delivering the game winning pass
"We have battling all year so this isn’t anything new to us," Harrington said
Valley Stream North's Shamari Griffith goes to the basket during the Nassau High School boys basketball game where Valley Stream North defeated Lynbrook at Lynbrook High School in Lynbrook
On a day when both teams played suffocating defense and contested nearly every shot
the most significant basket was uncontested
Valley Stream North center Shamari Griffith stole an entry pass near the Lynbrook foul line
dribbled the length of the court ahead of the field
slowed down to get his footwork just right and slammed home a two-handed dunk that provided more than just two points
Everyone’s faces changed,” coach Dan Achatz said after Valley Stream North held host Lynbrook to three points in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 40-35 victory in a key Nassau Conference A-III boys basketball game Saturday
“Shamari was out of the game for a while when we used a small lineup
He went back in and got a steal and made a huge play.”
The 6-3 Griffith’s jam capped a 6-0 run that gave the Spartans (13-2
4-3) went back in front on the next possession when Robert Sitonio drained a straightaway three but did not score another point
seven rebounds) hit four free throws down the stretch for VSN
which played lockdown defense and hit the boards hard
Noah Shy scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Spartans
Rylan Blondo led Lynbrook with 14 points but had only two in the second half
“Coach always preaches that defense is the easiest thing to do
Just work hard and trust each other,” Shy said
“We work on our help man-to-man defense every day
defense led to more defense — for both teams
which countered with a switching man-to-man that surrendered very few open shots
Lynbrook took a 32-28 lead by scoring the last six points of the third quarter
Nicholas Tuzzio sank a pull-up jumper and Sitonio hit two free throws
That’s when the Spartans turned up the heat on defense and scrapped their way back into the game
Shy drained a big three-pointer after a forced turnover
The Owls not only went scoreless after Sitonio’s trey but didn’t even get to the foul line until the final half- minute
“We buckled down in the fourth quarter,” Achatz said
“and made it difficult for them to get any easy shots
We play nothing but man-to-man help defense and we force bad shots

vehicular manslaughter in the second degree
driving while intoxicated and reckless driving
scoring 10 of his 15 points as the Spartans defeated St
Saturday in the second of the five-game Public-Catholic Challenge played at Elmont High School
“Coach is always saying ‘keep shooting,’ and he gives me all the confidence in the world,” said Shy
a 6-1 senior who added six assists and five rebounds
“There are certain times in a game that’s I’ve just got to make shots.”
Several of those moments helped VSN improve to 3-0 in a tightly-contested
Shy made a slick scoop shot on which he drew a foul and converted for a three-point play and a 31-25 lead midway through the third quarter
which got 16 points from Tyrone Lyons and 15 from Jon Harewood
capitalizing on some excellent ball movement by the Spartans
got open for a three-pointer from the right wing
he drove hard to the rim for another basket that produced a 51-40 with 1:01 left
“Even though I was cold [he hadn’t scored since early in the second quarter]
“It was late in the shot clock and I saw a breakdown in the defense
VSN coach Dan Achatz said it was good to see his players get rewarded for their persistence
“We always talk about it: How do we recover from not making shots
We grind it out on defense and keep shooting.”
Taliq Abdul-Rahim added 10 points and five assists for the Spartans while Shamari Griffith had nine rebounds and was the benefit of Shy’s lob off an in-bounds play early in the third quarter for a crowd-pleasing
Shy had a much less flashy assist to Alimo in the closing seconds
Shy bypassed an easy layup and pushed a soft bounce pass to Alimo for the basket
“He was feeling it and had a great game,” Shy said
“I shared the ball and gave him an extra bucket.”

Nassau County overhauled its property-tax appeal process after Edward Mangano won the county executive race in 2009
Nassau County’s largest residential tax appeal firms donated $94,000 to an unusual campaign account shared by six local Republican candidates in 2011 — around the time they signed an agreement with the county on a tax system overhaul that earned them tens of millions of dollars in profits
paid by the firms’ joint political action committee
far exceeded the $39,176 limit the law set for donations from a single contributor for that election
Republicans in North Valley Stream — led by Joseph Cairo
now the county party's chairman — created the campaign account after Republican then-County Executive Edward Mangano overhauled the property-tax appeal process
Representatives of the tax firms were part of the group that recommended some of the changes
The donations were made to the campaign account
a few months before and after county and tax-firm officials signed a court agreement locking in components of the overhaul
known as the Committee for Fair Property Taxes
was the only donor to that campaign account
which was shared by Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Donald X
former Hempstead Town Councilman Edward Ambrosino and four current or former Nassau County legislators: Deputy Presiding Officer Howard Kopel
Vincent Muscarella and former legislators Joseph Belesi and John Ciotti
Clavin is currently a candidate for Hempstead Town supervisor and Kopel and Muscarella are running for reelection
The tax firms established their PAC in 2009
during Mangano’s successful campaign for county executive
Their industry was being crippled by the tax system in place at the time
which required them to attend tens of thousands of time-consuming court hearings each year for individual clients
the majority of challenges would be resolved automatically with no court hearings — and in favor of their clients
A Republican Party spokesman denied any limits were exceeded and said the contributions had no influence on the candidates’ actions
Tax firm heads have long held that their contributions are not made to curry favor but to support candidates who support taxpayers
The 2011 contributions are a small part of the $3 million in contributions linked in various ways to the firms since 2009
Eighty-eight percent of the funds have gone to Republican candidates and committees
Mangano won by 386 votes out of more than 250,000 cast in 2009 and overhauled the property tax system with help from an advisory committee to which he appointed the heads of two of the firms
made the industry an estimated $502 million in its first six years as the number of successful grievances soared
That is $167 million more than they stood to bring in under the old system
county officials signed the court agreement with the tax firms that supported the new assessment challenge process
More than $112,000 in contributions linked to the firms were made in May 2011
$80,000 of which went to NVS Victory Fund 2011
Another $20,590 went directly to the main campaign accounts of the shared committee’s six candidates
The other $14,000 paid to NVS Victory Fund 2011 was contributed about five months later as Election Day approached
The agreement is still in place and has complicated efforts by Mangano’s successor
to correct widespread inaccuracies caused by his overhaul
Her changes threaten to return the assessment challenge process back to roughly what it was before Mangano
North Valley Stream Republicans had created a different shared committee in 2009 that did not receive more money than the candidates’ allowable amount
received donations only from the tax firms' PAC and only existed for one election
The candidates who shared them also had standard
single-candidate committees that they mainly used to fund their campaigns
Campaign finance experts said the shared campaign account activity was unusual
It raises questions about whether it violated campaign finance laws by allowing candidates to receive more money than campaign finance limits permit
which vary depending on the number of voters in a candidate’s district
"This looks like a very complicated structure set up to circumvent contribution limits," said Alex Camarda
senior policy adviser with the good government group Reinvent Albany
In an emailed statement sent after Newsday requested an interview with Cairo
Nassau County GOP spokesman Mike Deery said the shared campaign accounts were unintentionally established as multicandidate committees rather than party committees
Candidate committees generally have lower limits on what they can accept from a single contributor
which were exceeded by NVS Victory Fund 2011
can usually accept much larger sums from a single contributor
"A clerical error resulted in the committees filing documents as multicandidate committees," Deery said
"Considering that this was a clerical error
it is our position that the committees were in full compliance with all state and local election laws and reporting requirements."
Deery said any necessary amendments to the filings would be made
But experts said even if NVS Victory Fund 2011 were set up as a party committee
it would still raise questions of whether laws were violated
Party committees can give unlimited funds to candidates but cannot explicitly funnel money to them from others
particularly with the intention of exceeding campaign finance limits
but when contributions made by NVS Victory Fund 2011 are added to what four candidates received directly from the tax firms’ PAC
the total is higher than their contribution limits
The tax firms’ committee made large contributions to the main accounts of the six NVS Victory Fund 2011 candidates on the same day it contributed $80,000 to the Victory Fund itself
NVS Victory Fund 2011 sent $22,064 of that $80,000 to four of the candidates’ main accounts
that serving as a pass-through was not the purpose of the North Valley Stream committees in 2009 and 2011
"The committees made their own decisions regarding expenditures and contributions,” Deery said
“Candidates who received contributions from these committees would likely have no knowledge of the source of contributions to the committees."
The rest of the NVS committees’ funds were paid to party committees and longtime Nassau Republican consultant McLaughlin and Associates
It is unknown how much of those expenditures aided each of the candidates because the committees never filed a required form specifying who benefited
McLaughlin and Associates did not respond to a request for comment
Setting up the two multicandidate committees — NVS Victory Fund 2011 and the 2009 fund — required obtaining 14 notarized candidate authorization forms over two years
which are identical to the ones candidates sign for their main campaign account
authorized the shared committees to take part in the candidates’ campaigns
“When a multicandidate committee is established
the people doing it either know or should know that it will have a direct impact on the contribution limits of the specific candidates,” said veteran election lawyer Jerry Goldfeder
who represents mostly Democratic candidates and is the author of a widely referenced book on New York election law
Newsday contacted the shared committee candidates
Those who responded either did not remember signing the authorization forms — twice
in some cases — or provided statements defending their campaign finance practices
said they adhered to the highest campaign contribution standards
"What's more," the statement said
"any suggestion that these contributions would influence any of our governmental decisions is baseless and false as we had no knowledge of the identity or source of those who donated."
Kopel also said in a brief interview that he did not remember signing the authorization forms
have received $41,750 from the residential tax firms’ committee and the firms’ owners
immediate family members or other businesses
Muscarella’s campaigns have received $3,800
who only signed an authorization form for NVS Victory Fund 2011
said contributions he accepted complied with the law
"With regard to my relationship with tax certiorari firms," Clavin said
"I have held hundreds of taxpayer seminars
instructing homeowners how they can file their own grievances without the assistance of professional tax assessment appeal companies."
who has been an outspoken critic of Curran’s assessment revamp
has raised $59,770 linked to the tax firms since 2006
Civil fines or misdemeanor or felony charges can result from involvement in exceeding campaign finance limits
but such charges are rare and experts said the statutes of limitation have passed for any 2011 violations
Newsday first reported on the North Valley Stream committees in 2012
The fact that the committees were shared by multiple candidates was only discovered when Newsday recently requested from state elections officials the forms creating the committees
Among the documents provided were the authorization forms
The state’s campaign finance database website gave no indication candidates shared the accounts
Residential tax firm heads who have contributed to the Committee for Fair Property Taxes have vigorously denied contributing in exchange for any official action
The treasurer of the tax firms' committee
Paola Orsini of Re-Assessment and Evaluation Services
and firm heads Sean Acosta of Property Tax Reduction Consultants
Shalom Maidenbaum of Maidenbaum Property Tax Reduction Group and Lance Geller and Peter Norberto of Tax Correction Agency
Fred Perry of Fred Perry Property Tax Reduction Group said he was not directly involved in the disbursement of funds from the Committee for Fair Property Taxes
Leonidis Vlogianitis (18 points) led Garden City in a Nassau Class A semifinal against Valley Stream North on Tuesday
Following an inauspicious start that resulted in heavy momentum for their foe
a raucous opposing crowd and plenty of questions left to be answered
the Garden City boys basketball team regrouped on the Hofstra sideline and remembered one thing
"We just talked about how things like this happen and there was still three more quarters left," Garden City guard Leonidas Vlogianitis said
3 Garden City found themselves to begin the second quarter and got back on track
10 Valley Stream North in a Nassau Class A semifinal at Hofstra on Tuesday night
Garden City made a swift turnaround in the second after struggling out of the gate and falling behind 9-3 in the first six minutes
Valley Stream North led 13-8 entering the second
but back-to-back layups by Tarell Joseph and Vlogianitis in the opening minute quickly brought Garden City to within one and ultimately jumpstarted their 16-2 spurt
Quinn Long closed the extended run with a layup with 3:51 to go in the half
giving Garden City a 24-15 lead before entering the locker room with a 27-19 advantage
Vlogianitis led Garden City with 18 points
said Garden City bounced back after its early struggles after adjusting to the unfamiliar surroundings
"The first quarter was all about getting used to this environment," Perisa said
"This was our first time playing here
But we stuck together as a team and we just leaned on each other."
Garden City began pulling away in the third
taking a 49-29 lead at the end of the third thanks to a 12-5 run in the final 3:24
Valley Stream North (15-7) then mounted one final comeback attempt in the fourth
cutting the deficit to 59-51 with 2:07 to go
But despite a momentum shift similar to the opening minutes
Garden City regrouped once again — this time hitting eight of its final nine free throws to close the victory
Now Garden City shifts its focus to Manhasset and the opportunity to win a county title
"[Manhasset's] a great team," Garden City coach Jim Hegmann said
"A well-disciplined team with great coaches and players
Tough kids — should be a great game."

Davidson and Jones approached an 18-year-old man and 18-year-old woman on the street along Sunset Road in Valley Stream
this time on Fenwood Drive near Waverly Place
and tried to rob them -- only to have the victims flee
police said a Fourth Precinct patrol sergeant "interrupted Davidson" and his accomplice
in the midst of a robbery near the corner of Merrick Road and North Waldinger Avenue
Davidson seen ditching a gun as he ran off
police later arrested Davison after a struggle near the intersection of North Montgomery Street and Martense Avenue
Police said a sergeant suffered a right knee injury while helping make the arrest
Both were treated at a hospital and released
Police said that Jones was arrested after he surrendered to Robbery Squad detectives on Aug
He was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery
two counts of second-degree robbery and first-degree criminal use of a firearm
Valley Stream North High School teachers Alphonso Daddino
Two social studies teachers at Valley Stream North High School who say they were sexually harassed by their department head for five years have filed a complaint with the New York State Division of Human Rights and the U.S
saying the district failed to protect them
said the harassment began just after Cecilia Sanossian became chair in the 2009-10 school year
even after they and eight other staffers from their department sent administrators a signed letter in May outlining the claims
"We are writing this letter to inform you about the unhealthy and hostile work environment that Mrs
Cecilia Sanossian has created in the Social Studies Department of Valley Stream North High School," it began
detailing what the signers deemed "inappropriate
unwarranted and unsolicited touching of staff" and "unprofessional
defaming and objectifying speech toward staff."
The two men described their treatment and complaints to the district during a news conference Monday at the Carle Place office of their lawyer

District Superintendent Bill Heidenreich did not return calls for comment but released a statement
"The district is aware of the allegations and is conducting an internal investigation," he said
the district is not offering any further comment at this time."
She currently is a teacher at Valley Stream North
said Sanossian talked openly about past sexual adventures
bragged about her libido and touched him often
and he felt powerless to prevent the unwanted attention
It caused problems in his marriage as he brought the stress home with him
This is really an offensive situation -- particularly when you feel you have no support from areas that should support you."
Brennan said he first told administrators about the problem at the end of the 2009-10 school year
"It got to the point where I wouldn't even go in our office anymore -- I would sit in a separate area by myself in the library just to avoid contact."
Brennan said he filed a sexual harassment complaint with Valley Stream North principal Clifford Odell about Sanossian in February 2013 and Odell replied a month later by letter that there was "insufficient evidence to find a violation of the board policy."
said he submitted a complaint of harassment to administrators about Sanossian in fall 2014 but that school officials took no action
"To see nothing be done about it and to see them not take it seriously
"We got the sense that the fix was in."
Both men said Sanossian threatened to bad-mouth them to their superiors and told them her husband wanted to do them bodily harm
Daddino and Brennan said they dread seeing her next week as the new school year begins
Leeds said Sanossian should be disciplined and removed from her post
especially after his clients' claims were backed up by other educators
"We are concerned about retaliation," he said
